thinking thoughts
I have quite a few thoughts about Alicent Hightower, both the book and show versions of her character. Her actions remind me of the hyper-religious women in my own life, and while I sympathize with her somewhat in the show, I find her character cruel and callous. In the book, however, I respected her agency and choices, even if she annoyed me at times.
That being said, my main issues with the House of the Dragon show are the mistreatment of Laena, Leanor and Alicent's indecisiveness and lack of backbone. Rhaenyra's accusation that Alicent had been hiding behind her righteousness was spot-on. I'm sorry that Aemond lost his eye, but I do not think that the appropriate response will ever be knowingly removing the eye of a six-year-old boy.
Alicent declares war against Rhaenyra because she believes she didn't tell her the whole truth about the pleasure house incident with Daemon. I wonder why she'd think she's entitled to anything from Rhaenyra, much less the truth.  She broke her trust and they are barely friends. While we know that Otto pressured her into going into Viserys' room, Rhaenyra does not, and in her mind, her best friend married her father only six months after her mother's death. Rather than trying to understand where Rhaenyra is coming from, Alicent breaks her trust once more and declares war.
Alicent ignores the violence her older son inflicts on his younger siblings, and she marries her 13-year-old daughter to her own violent rapist son.  Additionally, Alicent emotionally abuses her stepdaughter/friend for no apparent reason and aligns herself with an incel/murderer/oathbreaker, a kin slayer and a rapist despite going on and on about Rhaenyra's lack of morals. She knowingly crowns her violent rapist son, who she'd told was no son of hers, literally one episode ago.

It's hilarious how Daemon and Rhaenyra's grandchildren carry the Green's legacy in spirit by destroying House Targaryen through internal conflicts decades later.
Aegon IV grows up to be far more extreme and gluttonous than Aegon II could ever be, coupled with a greater degree of cowardice (Aegon II would never). His sister Naerys is a little Helaena/Alicent-coded, but her cousin Daena mirrors Alicent more than I could imagine. And I am precisely talking about book!Alicent here.
Both Alicent and Daena were unapologetic in their pursuit of power after years of abuse and neglect, demanding the realm recognize their sons as kings by birthright. Neither of them gave two fucks about starting a civil war and I call that a slayyy. Go, my queens!
If Daena had been more like Rhaenyra, believe me when I say I wouldn't have liked her as much. It's their defiance that makes both Alicent and Daena more compelling characters.
I don't necessarily think Daena would have liked Alicent, but she would have definitely felt grudging respect and admiration for her courage.
Daeron the Young Dragon is just like Daeron the Daring (both are extremely popular among the nobles and the smallfolk). Both died young and were eternalized. Baelor the Blessed is obsessed with catholicism and guilt to a point that would even scare Alicent and Criston.
Aemon the Dragonknight is essentially a more refined, though not necessarily cooler, version of Aemond One-Eye. Aemon literally stood aside while his sister endured years of sexual and psychological abuse from her brother-husband. Aemond would never have stood by if Aegon II had tried to harm Helaena. His loyalty and protectiveness towards his sister would have driven him to intervene. Their love stories are similar too, with many fans shipping Aemond with Helaena, and Aemon with Naerys.
Elaena is intriguing, but there's not much to say about her or her sister Rhaena.
Daemon and Rhaenyra's grandchildren are worse than the Targtowers in every aspect. Alicent (the Hightowers) and her children de-stabilized House Targaryen during the Dance, but Rhaenyra's grandchildren did so much worse by starting a civil war that lasted for generations to come. Team Black got the realm and power back, and they still fucked up. Again.
Another intriguing aspect is that Alicent and her children had legitimate reasons to resist and fight for Aegon's claim to the throne by feudal right—even if those reasons were fueled by spite and revenge. Alicent endured years of sexual abuse from Viserys, bearing children he barely acknowledged. She was humiliated in court and called "mad" when her son lost his eye, and Rhaenyra's son faced no repercussions—not even a slap on the wrist.
The Targtower children were neglected by their father for years and were practically forgotten when Rhaenyra lived in the Red Keep with her sons in tow. (And if you think Rhaenyra didn’t use her father’s love and rejection of his other children as a political machination, then you’re an absolute idiot.) If usurping her throne was the biggest fuck you they could give Rhaenyra and Viserys, then I fully support it!
Despite their complicated and angry feelings towards each other, the Greens would never act on them to cause significant harm. They understood that they only had each other for support and protection. But Rhaenyra's grandchildren, who were also in a similar situation, harbored outright hatred for each other for no reason! You'd think after the Dance, they would have learned a thing or two about the importance of family, but the gang didn't give a single fuck LMAO.
Daemon and Rhaenyra's grandchildren didn't have significant opposition. House Targaryen still held substantial power and ruled over the other Great Houses. Although they had to be more cautious without having dragons to threaten others, the internal strife could have been avoided if Daena and her sisters had been treated like actual human beings rather than cattle. (If Alicent was treated better and her children were acknowledged by Viserys and the rest of his family). The lack of care and respect towards them sowed the seeds of war, leading to the internal conflicts that ultimately weakened the dynasty.
The generational cycle of abuse and neglect within House Targaryen is one of the main key reasons why they were driven to extinction in merely three centuries. House Hightower and House Baratheon only did so little to show their true color.
Rhaenyra's claim that "The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon was itself," couldn't be more accurate!

100 AC Dragonstone
Alysanne's youngest and most favored daughter, Gael, died during childbirth with her first child the princess y/n. Gael's death broke the good Queen, for she had outlived all but two of her children. No longer able to bear living at King's Landing and the Red Keep, Alysanne returned to Dragonstone. She died of a wasting illness on that took away most of the joys in her life, her body was cremated, and her ashes were interred on Dragonstone.
Little y/n watched curiously from her grandsire's arms her head tucked in his neck. She saw tears leaving the King's eyes, his expression somber and broken.
"My little princess." Jaehaerys whispered. With no parents of her own, the King became the guarding of his fifth grandchild. The little princess as the King affectionately called her became a crutch for the wise monarch just as her mother has been for Queen Alysanne.
His age prevented him from flying on dragon back as well as most of activities that brought him joy. Jaehaerys ordered that the crib of little y/n be moved to the chambers that once belonged to him and his sister-wife Queen Alysanne.
From then on princess y/n was always with the King. The old monarch played and read to the little child. Due to his condition Jaehaerys was bedridden for most of his days, rarely leaving his chambers. To the surprise of many his granddaughter accompanied him everywhere, to small council meeting, official suppers and many other. From then on the little princess was dubbed Jaehaerys's shadow.
...
101 AC Harenhall
„Mama who is that?” The great-granddaughter of King Jaehaerys princess Rhaenyra asked her mother, curiously watching the six year old girl talk to the king.
„This is your aunt, Rhaenyra.” Aemma whispered gently stroking Rhaenyra’s silver hair. „Her name is y/n. If the King allows it you two will be brought up together.”
„y/n…” Rhaenyra muttered leaning on her mothers shoulder looking intensely at the girl. „Can I show her Syrax?”
„Not today but one day my sweet” Aemma responded smiling at her daughters love for her steed.
„Aemma!” Viserys called searching for his wife. He stopped once he saw his daughter and wife awaiting at his presence.
„I am here my love.” Aemma said rising from the seat, her pregnant belly swollen and heavy. „Rhaenyra go with Daena to your nursery.”
After the death of Queen Alysanne and their two oldest sons Aemon and Baelon, Jaehaerys called upon the great council to decide the matter of succession. Fourteen claims have been brought before the council. Nine lesser claims were quickly discarded.
Archmaester Vaegon the only living son of the old king was passed over due to his vows, and Princess Rhaenys and her daughter Laena were passed over on account of their sex. The assembled lords then focused down on two major candidates: Prince Viserys Targaryen and Rhaenys's son Laenor Velaryon.
Primogeniture favored Laenor, as his mother, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, was the daughter of Prince Aemon Targaryen, who had been the eldest living son of King Jaehaerys. Yet proximity favored Viserys, who, in addition, had been the last Targaryen prince to ride Balerion.
Rhaenys stood proud with her husband Lord Corlys Velaryon and her young children at her side. Viserys along with his pregnant wife rivalled Rhaenys's claim. Despite the fondness the princess held for her cousin she despised him in this moment. She had more of a claim than Viserys but men would sooner put the realm to the torch than crown a woman.
The little girl was seated in her own little throne next to the King, she watching curiously the people before her. The soft giggles of his granddaughter brought Jaehaerys a moment of peace in this troubling moment. He was overly fond of his granddaughter, a sweet and charming babe she was, she reminded him of his first daughter, Daenerys.
In the end, the lords in the realm saw the most importance in having the male line taking precedence over the female line. While the maesters never revealed the actual numbers, it was rumored that Prince Viserys had won by a twenty to one vote.
Begrudgingly Rhaenys's supporters accepted the great council's choice. The realm decided to name Viserys the heir to the Iron Throne and prince of Dragonstone.
...
101 AC Red Keep
The wise King Jaehaerys threw a great feast in honour of his granddaughters eight name day. No expense was spared, lords from all over the realm gathered in king's landing to attend the celebration.
Little y/n watched curiously from her grandfather's lap. Her little fingers playing with the material of the King's attire.
The king held fondness in his heart for his granddaughter. A happy and lively girl. So much unlike Gael, who cried restlessly. He smiled at the memory of his late daughters.
The six year old clumsily played with her food, she stared at her grandsire and the court before them.
The celebration continued lords and ladies danced, drank and ate their fill. It was almost after the hour of the owl that the guests began to return to their chambers.
"Come little princess, I must show you something."
The old king summoned the commander of the King's guard ser Gyles Morrigen, and ordered a carriage to be prepared at once.
"Your grace it is unwise for you to leave the keep at this time." Ser Gyles said unsure.
"I will hear none of it." The king muttered and the carriage took off towards the dragopit.
The little princess awoke once the carriage stopped at the gates of the dragonpit. She looked around curiously and looked back at her grandsire.
"Zaldrīzes!" The little girl mumbled holding onto the king's clothes. The king nodded and led them to where his steed the bronze fury rested. (Dragons)
"Bring Vermithor." The King ordered the stationed dragon keepers. The bronze fury lazily stepped out of the dragonpit "Issa jorrāelagon raqiros" (my dear friend)
The large beast looked at his rider than at the little girl next to the old King. In turn the girl let go of her grandsire's hand and took confident steps towards the dragon. The King watched curiously, nobody has ever dared to approach his steed with such confidence.
"Mithor!" The girl said, her chubby hands clapped. The bronze fury looked curiously at the little human before him. He laid his large head on the ground next to the baby. "Mithor" The girl repeated, as she was one step away from the beast. With no hesitance, she laid her head on the dragons snout, lightly petting his once shiny scales.
The king looked at the scene before him in awe. The blood of old Valyria was strong in his little princess, a future dragon lord he thought. Just like Aegon the conqueror has been. He watched as his granddaughter talked and petted the bronze fury. His body ached yet he smiled, moments passed in serene silence. But the pain soon became unbearable for the old King.
"Come y/n, we must return." The king said interrupting the bonding of his steed with his grandchild. The girl run up to him obediently, petting Vermithor one last time. The king took little y/n by her hand and returned to the carriage.
"You my grandchild may not have been what was desired but you are no less dear to me." He said to the child "Once I pass your brother will inherit the crown but you my little princess will claim Vermithor. You will make house Targaryen stronger than it has ever been."
...
"Grandsire can you tell me a story?" You pleaded sitting on Jaehaerys's bed, the king smiled.
"What would you wish to hear?" He asked quietly, his voice raspy and hoarse.
"What was grandsire Aegon like?"
"Oh sweet child... I was your age when he died. My father your great grandsire Aenys became King but he wasn't well loved."
"Then your uncle Maegor took the throne after his death." You said quietly.
"Yes, he usurped my elder brother Aegon. But many didn't think that Maegor's accession as treason, they were worried that my brother would be a weak king like our father." Jaehaerys said reminiscing his past "He was King for five years, until his mysterious death."
"Mysterious?" You questioned staring up at your grandsire's face from his lap.
"In the same day as Lord Rogar Baratheon declared me King, Maegor died impaled by the swords of the Iron Throne." The king said "Many believe that the Iron Throne is capable of killing anyone unfit of it."
"Have you ever been cut, grandfather?" You asked curiously.
"I have not, no."
"Was Aegon rejected by the throne?" Your grandsire let out a chuckle and shook his head.
"Aegon built it sweet girl. He was the one that conquered the seven kingdoms."
"Except of Dorne." You added.
"That is true, but we have won four wars against Dorne." Your grandsire noticed you were not convinced "What would you do to bring Dorne under our rule?"
You perked up at his question and thought for a moment.
"War has done nothing to bring Dorne into the seven kingdoms, perhaps a marriage would be more successful." Jaehaerys raised his long silver eyebrows.
"Who would you offer to Dorne?" He questioned curiously.
"Princess Mara has a son Qoren, I would offer an engagement to him as he is the next Prince of Dorne."
"Would you marry him?"
"If it would aid your rule grandfather then yes." You stated confidently.
"Even if you have never met him?"
You nodded cautiously.
"I can get to know him..."
"If you wish I could invite him to court." You smiled and laid down on his lap. "Your great great grandsire would be very proud of you, too smart for your own good."
You smiled up at the wise King as he caressed your hair.
"He was charismatic yet commanding, but many did not know him. His only friend was Orys Baratheon his half-brother. He spoke to my elder brothers Aegon and Viserys and myself of the conquest, of Old Valyria and the Dragonlords before him."
"Like Gaemon the Glorious?" You asked curiously
"Yes sweet girl, in 114 before the conquest he along with his father Aenar and Daenys the dreamer came to Westeros before the doom of old Valyria."
"I wish to know what Valyria was like." You murmured thinking of the ancient civilisation.
"Valyria was filled with Dragonlords, Targaryens were one of the minor houses that populated the peninsula. But through dreams we became the most powerful house in the known world."
As your grandsire told you stories of your ancestors sleep began to take over you.
...
In a month Prince Qoren arrived in the Red Keep, you were giddy to meet the boy. You stood behind your brothers as they welcomed him in the royal courtyard. A blush appeared on your cheeks as you saw the future Prince of Dorne.
"Your highnesses." He bowed his head as he approached you all with his entourage. Rhaenyra giggled as she saw the blush appear on your features.
"Hush." You whispered to her, she snuck out her tongue.
Qoren was not a lot older than you, only five years. Despite being only one and ten he was a handsome boy. Your grandsire to ill to receive his new guest stayed in his chambers, opting for meeting the prince during supper.
"It is a pleasure to be meeting you Prince Qoren." Viserys said, his wife Aemma standing beside him.
"His Grace has invited you to supper this evening." Aemma said leaning on Viserys's shoulder. The boy nodded and smiled.
"A great honour, thank you your highnesses."
You smiled at his charm, you couldn't wait for the supper to begin so you could meet the prince and get to know him.
Daemon however didn't seem too pleased with the Dornishman's presence, he scowled at the prince. You giggled at your brother's obvious resentment towards a boy almost ten years younger. Rhaenyra however was pleased with a new face in court.
"What do you think of him?" Rhaenyra whispered to your ear as Qoren was led away by servants to his new chambers.
"I have not even met him, therefore I cannot say."
"I bet you look forward to meeting him though." She cheekily answered placing her head on your shoulder, you giggled and nodded. Daemon's scowl seemed to grow even bigger.
Quickly hours passed and your maids appeared to dress you. A pale purple dress with wide sleeves and embroidered silver dragons at the side. You smiled gleefully as the maids tied the gown on you. Soon ser Ryam Redwyne knocked on the doors of your chambers to escort you. You smiled seeing the dark haired knight.
"Princess." He bowed his head
"Ser Redwyne." You answered a wide smile on your face "I hope you are doing well."
"With your presence princess I am." The knight answered and led you to the small council chamber where the supper was to take place.
The walk through Maegor's holdfast was quick and quaint, the spare nobles and servants bowed as you walked by them.
You saw that only your grandsire was present, you skipped towards him and placed a kiss on his wrinkled cheek. He smiled seeing you.
"Good morrow y/n" Jaehaerys said placing his bony hand on your silver locks affectionately.
"Where is everyone?" You asked sitting on his left.
"I have asked them to come later." His grace answered and you nodded "I wish to ask you something sweet girl... Do you want to marry?"
You looked a bit dumbfounded at your grandsire.
"One day, as is my duty." You answered
"Your grandmother was the one to arrange marriages for half the realm, I think she would support my intuition... I wish to know what you think of Prince Qoren once the supper is over."
"Certainly." You mumbled your conversation was cut short as the room began to fill. Viserys and his family along with Daemon, the small council along with Rhaenys and her family the last to enter was Prince Qoren himself. He sat next to you as was the King's desire.
"Princess y/n" Qoren said as glanced at you.
"Prince Qoren it is nice to meet you" You mumbled a bit shy. The curly haired boy smiled your way.
"You look very beautiful, princess." He said, a small smile on his lips.
"Thank you, you look very handsome yourself."
Jaehaerys smiled seeing his favourite grandchild happy and laughing. Soon the servants arrived with various dishes ranging from roasted pigs to pies. The cups were full of wine and laughter echoed through the small council chamber.
"Perhaps we could visit the gardens on the morrow?" Qoren asked quietly, you nodded and smiled.
"I would enjoy that very much." You answered, you said your goodbyes with the prince as he returned to your chambers. Feeling a bit tired yourself you decided to retire. The adults drank and laughed.
You laid comfortably in the canopy bed, the cool breeze of spring caressed your covered body. As you were drifting off to sleep you heard shuffling, you glanced around your room the search for the source of the noise.
"Rhaenyra?" You asked as the princess climbed into your bed. "What are you doing here? You should be in your chambers, it is late."
"Do you like him?" Rhaenyra teased and a blush appeared on your cheeks.
"Do I like who?" You answered evading her question. Rhaenyra rolled her eyes. You sighed admitting defeat.
"He is nice." You mumbled playing with your fingers. The silver haired princess smiled at your answer.
"Grandsire will be pleased then." Rhaenyra murmured "He found you a husband without much difficulty."
"I am too young to marry Rhaenyra..!" You whispered angrily.
"But you want to marry him if you do then you will become Princess y/n of Dorne!" She sang jumping on your bed.
"What if I want to marry him?"
"Marriage is boring, boys are boring!" She said her brows furrowed and a scowl appeared on her face. "You should stay with me, we would eat cake and listen to songs and dance!"
"But it won't be that way..." You said sadly "Sooner or later you and I will have to marry and produce children."
"I will never ever have children!" Rhaenyra stated crossing her arms as she sat in front of you. "The babies in mama's belly never come and that makes mama and papa sad."
"If you say so Rhaenyra." You said sadly stroking the realm's delight hair. She leaned into your touch and laid next to you, quickly falling asleep. It soon became a habit that Rhaenyra slept in your chambers instead of her own. You did not mind, at night it was awfully quiet in the Red Keep and you felt alone.
"I envy you..." You whispered when you made sure that the silver haired princess fell asleep.
You awoke early the sun was barely over the horizon, Rhaenyra sprawled herself all over your bed. You sighed and covered the girl with blankets and left her to sleep.
The castle was quiet, not wanting to bother your maids you dressed yourself. A burgundy dress with gold vines embroidered on the corsage, the sleeves reached your elbows but the material continued.
Perhaps after breaking fast with your grandsire, you will walk the garden's with Qoren. It was a pleasant thought, at your door stood ser Clement Crabb.
"Ser Clement." You said "Could you please escort me to my grandsire?" You asked politely at the elder knight.
"Of course, princess." He said and walked ahead through Maegor's holdfast.
"y/n?" Jaehaerys asked from his bed as you entered his chambers, the smell of incense abused your nose.
"Good morrow, grandfather." You said happily and skipped towards the old King. "Ser Clement could you ask for breakfast to be brought?"
The knight nodded and left the chambers.
"You seem happy." Jaehaerys stated, as you helped him sit up in his bed, placing sating pillows behind his back.
"I am excited yes. I am to spend the afternoon with Prince Qoren."
"Ah, yes..." The King nodded and smiled. "What do you think of him? Is he worthy?"
"He is... clever and thoughtful." Your voice was thin "I hope to get to know him better today. But I do enjoy his presence and look forward to the stroll."
"That is good, sweet girl. He should be honoured merely by your presence."
"Grandsire!" You chuckled at his grace's boldness.
"I know it will be some time till you are eligible to marry but I wish to give you the choice of a suitor. Gods know that forcing a Targaryen to marry only brings misery."
"Is that why you married grandmother?"
"Precisely little dragon, our mother tried to marry her off to Orryn Baratheon hearing this she came to me and we fled to Dragonstone and wed." Jaehaerys reminisced about the past, the happiest days of his life were spent on Dragonstone with Alysanne.
The servants arrived with plates of fruits and cheeses, oatmeal and pies. Ser Ryam Redwyne helped your grandsire sit in a chair on the balcony of his chambers. You laughed as you ate occasionally helping his grace.
"Your Grace." The Kingsguard interrupted, you stared curiously at the famed knight. "Prince Qoren is here." Jaehaerys nodded and the Dornish man entered.
"Prince Qoren come." He asked and the prince obliged taking a seat on your left. "My granddaughter is very fond of pomegranates... I assume that they grow abundantly in Dorne."
"Oh yes, your grace. After all Dorne is the main export of exotic fruits." The dark haired prince answered a confident smile on his lips. You caught on, your grandsire was a very smart man.
"Grandsire, I think that the fruits that grow in Dorne are not his biggest interest." You mused cutting a piece of a fruit pie.
"As the future prince of Dorne I must be well aquainted with the land I will rule. That includes the fruit." He jested, the king smiled and chuckled. Your Grandsire quickly tiered himself, you helped him to his bed as the servants took away the plates.
"Please help yourself to the leftovers." You said to the servants, they nodded thankfully and left. "Prince Qoren shall we walk to the gardens?"
"As you wish princess." He responded and took you by the arm and you walked to Rhaenys's gardens escorted by Ser Clement.
"Thank you for sparing me the time of day, your highness." Qoren spoke glancing at you with his brown orbs.
"You do not need to be so modest, my prince."
"It is not everyday I get to be graced with the presence of a princess of the realm." You smiled bashfully at Qoren.
"You are too kind."
"I cannot help it, you are perfection itself." Qoren said
"Should I be like my aunt Viserra and simply agree?" You jested, the dark haired boy chuckled.
"I would not blame you princess."
You strolled comfortably through the gardens of the red keep. The prince proved to be wonderful company, charming and funny.
"Your Highness I know that we are much too young." The prince began taking your hand in his "But I would be honoured if you considered me as a potential husband." A bit appaled and flustered you simply nodded. The prince smiled bashfully and kissed your hand.
A few letters were exchanged between King Jaehaerys and Princess Mara. The fruit of these negotiations became the betrothal of Prince Qoren Martell and Princess y/n Targaryen. If the pair were to conceive a child, Dorne would officially become a part of the seven Kingdoms. Without war or conquest the wise King, the Conciliator managed to complete the work of his grandsire. But it wouldn't happen if it weren't for his beloved grandchild, princess y/n.
Prince Qoren stayed at court for many moons but word has spread that his mother Princess Mara has fallen ill. Worried for his mother he decided to return back to the south. Tears glossed over your eyes as you learnt that Qoren had to leave.
"Do not cry princess." He said as you stared bitterly at the ground.
"I am not crying." You stubbornly said, Qoren laughed at your words.
"I will see you soon, y/n."
"Promise me you'll be back." You whispered taking the boys hand, a small smile appeared on his thin lips.
"I promise." He said and placed a kiss to your cheek, tears dropped from your red orbs as you engulfed Qoren into a hug. "We will marry soon princess and then I will never leave your side."
"Promise it! Promise it on the old Gods and the new." You said strongly into his chest.
"I Prince Qoren of House Martell, future Prince of Dorne promise by the old Gods and the new that we will marry and that I will never leave your side until the stranger comes."
"I Princess y/n of House Targaryen, promise by the old Gods and the new that I will be by your side until the stranger comes." You said your vows after letting Qoren go.
"Goodbye, princess." He whispered and pressed a kiss against your forehead.
You watched as he climbed on his sand steed, salty tears stained your cheeks as you watched him leave.
...
102 AC Red Keep
When the bells rung, maids and guards kept y/n away from her grandsire's chambers.
The king is dead.
Tears flowed from the red orbs of the Targaryen Princess. The halls around her felt suffocating, silence rang in her ears. She stared intently at the doors of her grandsire's chambers.
y/n ran from the stench of death and yet it followed her. The cold feeling of the stranger hot on her tail. Before she knew it, her feet had taken her to the stables. She quickly jumped on a horse that was closest to her. Without a saddle she galloped through the busy streets of King's Landing. Even in the hour of the eel, the laughter of whores and lords echoed through the city.
Tears streamed down y/n's ample cheeks. She saw the dome of the dragonpit. Easily evading the dragon keepers she snuck into the many caves of the structure, easily finding her way to the bronze fury. It was as if she was simply following after a thread. Knowing where he was despite not stepping a foot in the dragon pit before.
"Vermithor?" y/n asked looking around the vast cave littered with bones, a deep grumble made her turn her gaze. The bronze fury rested on the ground, his nostrils expelled smoke. The dragon instantly stared at the girl before him. Without a second though she threw herself at Vermithor's snout petting his horns.
"māzigon, ivestragī īlva sōvegon hēnkirī" y/n pleaded her cheek pressed against his bronze scales. Vermithor roared, one wing moved then the other, his maw opened and closed. y/n looked expectantly at the bronze fury. When the beast lowered his head in her direction she smiled and climbed atop of the old steed of her grandsire. (come, let us fly together)
"Ivestragī's jikagon, Vermithor!" The dragon roared and rised from his position moving expertly among the many corridors of the dragonpit. When the light of the moon reached her eyes she laughed excitedly. Taking Vermithors reins and deepening her seat in the brown and gold saddle. "Sōves, Vermithor!" (Let's go! Fly!)
The beast roared and spread his wings, taking flight. The dragon keepers shouted and exclaimed as they noticed the bronze fury leaving the dragonpit, atop his back the little princess laughed and smiled at the people under her. The dragon took off and y/n screamed with happiness.
Grandsire I have done what you told me. I have claimed Vermithor.
While the bells rung signalising King's Jaehaerys's death the city watched as the bronze fury circled the Red Keep. Golden fire escaping it's maw.
...
The body of the wise and beloved King Jaehaerys of House Targaryen, the First of His Name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm laid wrapped in cloth at the burning pyre. Vermithor looked on from the hills at the royal funeral. The high Septon said his prayers in honour of the late King. Thousands of nobles and small folk gathered to witness the funereal of the beloved King.
"May he rest with his sister wife Queen Alysanne and their many children. The god's blessed their union and King Jaehaerys's rule. We are surrounded by the fruits of his labour."
y/n looked on with sad eyes at the pyre before her. The body of her beloved grandsire wrapped in cloth. Her gaze travelled from her cousins to her brothers. She examined their saddened expressions. Then she looked at the bronze fury, he too looked sad, his dark eyes focused on the corpse of his former rider.
"y/n, my sweet it is time." The new Queen Aemma whispered to her sister in law. The seven year old looked at the silver haired woman and nodded. The little princess let go of Rhaenyra hand and stepped forward.
"Dracarys"
Vermithor roared and his throat begun to bubble with fire. The dragon breathed at the pyre. The flames delicately caressed y/n cheek, the same way Jaehaerys used to do. Salty tears flowed from the red eyes of the little princess.
The princess y/n Targaryen became the youngest dragon rider in recorded history. On the same night as her grandsire passed she secretly mounted the bronze fury at just eight years of age. This only shows the bond that y/n held with the dragon. -From the dragon bringer by the feather and quill of Grand Maester Roland.

Targaryen’s headcanons: Jaehaerys I reign
Baelon helped Rhaenys claim Meelys, this upseted Daemon who wished to inherited his mother's dragon. He claimed Caraxes as soon as he could, which hurted Rhaenys who was still mourning her father.
Saera used to do Viserra’s hair, but was very harsh and even sometimes violent, tugging harshly every time she moved, despite that, Viserra never let anyone else touch it.
Baelon and Aemon had the strongest sibling bond, but always felt something was missing between them. It was Daenerys.
Maegelle and Vaegon reconnected later in their lives with Vaegon proclaiming that she was the only sibling he could stomach.
Maegelle fell into a depression after Daella’s death and regretted not helping her become a septa.
Aemma and Jocelyn were never truly members of the family -despite being a sister/granddaughter- they were just considered as spouses.
Baelon tried to push a marriage between Viserys and Rhaenys, but this was quickly discarded by Aemon.
Alyssa was pressured/coerced by her mother and father to keep having children, this was due to the lack of more heirs by Aemon and Jocelyn.
Many times Gael wished to join Viserys, Rhaenys and Daemon, but she was always obliged to spent time with Alysanne. They never took her seriously or cared for her that much.
Aemma never had jewelry that belonged to her mother. Alysanne took it all when Daella died, she only got to inherited when she became queen.
Rhaella disliked being around Jaehaerys and Alysanne, but did greatly enjoy the company of Maegelle taking her under her wing when she became a novice. Maegelle became like a daughter to her.
When Saera fled, Viserra took her personal diary and hid it in her chamber. After she died, the diary was never found again.
Aemma’s first love was a childhood friend, she believed they were going to marry one day, until Jaehaerys and Alysanne fix her marriage to Viserys.
Rhaenys saw Viserra sneaking out the night she died, but Viserra made her swear not to alert anyone. She deeply regretted not doing it.
While Vaegon never claimed a dragon, he had a favorite which was Balerion. He has many sketches of him safeguarded in his room.

The Realm's Light - 3
Tumblr media
Part one
Part two
Safe to say, the celebration of Princess
Mariana's birth would be far grander than her own parents's wedding. King Jaehaerys I of his name had announced that a grand feast with hunting and tourneys would commence for a month inviting all the lords and ladies of the seven kingdoms and free cities to honor the birth of his great granddaughter.
While preparing for the grand feast for their immediate family, Queen Alysanne had questioned her eldest son about the whereabouts of her other grandson.
" Baelon, where is Daemon? It's been more than 6 hours after the babe was born but he hadn't come to see his niece till now." Prince Viserys had already sent a guard to inform his brother about Princess Aemma's labour.
" You know about Daemon, mother. When informed about Aemma's labour, he immediately flew on Caraxes to Dragonstone to fetch a dragon egg for his little niece or nephew ." Crown Prince Baelon replied to his mother." We should soon find a match for that boy so that he can embrace his responsibilities." Queen Alysaane gruffly said.
"Mother, did you invite Vaegon and Maegelle to the feast." Prince Baelon asked his mother. Ever since Vaegon Targaryen became an archmaester in Citadel and Maegelle as a Septa to the faithful seven, their visits to king's landing had been limited.
" Vaegon informed that he will not be able to attend today's gathering but he will come during the tourney next month to see his grandniece and sweet Maegelle had gone to a village near the riverlands to se fellow followers." Queen Alysanne said to her son .
After the death of her two daughters, Princesses Alyssa and Viserra, Septa Maegelle had became the only comfort for the old queen. "I hope that the birth of the little Princess may unite our family,Baelon." The old queen said to the spring Princ.
The crown Prince agreed with his mother as the house of the dragon was slowly starting to break away after the death of Prince Aemon soon followed by Prince Baelon given the title of Prince of Dragonstone instead of  giving it to Princess Rhaenys,Prince Aemon's only daughter.
If the problem was not solved then, there would be a future filled with destruction for House Targaryen.
Tumblr media
As the news of the birth of his niece soon reached him , Prince Daemon closed his eyes and did nothing but smile for a minute. The gods had granted his prayers. Now,it is time for him to fulfill his part in the plan . But first,he needed to find a suitable dragon egg for his darling niece.
Words are that the people in the village near Dragonstone saw a dragon flew to an isolated cave a moon ago. Prince Daemon went alone to look for the dragon and see if there is any egg with it. As he went near the cave a familiar pungent smell of blood hit him. Someone must have died here recently.
When he went inside the cave,a dragon was seen lying motionlessly with no external injuries with it's silver scales glittering in the darkcave. 'It must have died from childbirth ' Prince Daemon thought . However,Something had caught his eye before he could fully examine the dragon. In the corner lays an egg so white that it brightens the whole cave.
Prince Daemon took the egg in his hands and decided that it would be perfect for his Issa dōna hāedar. He then went outside the cave and called Caraxes. The Blood Wyrm roared and landed near his rider. Prince Daemon touched it's about and said " Are you excited to see īlva tolie half, Caraxes?". After saying that, he claimed on his dragon to attend the family gathering tonight and meet a special someone.
--------------------------------------------------------------
The preparations for the celebration had kept every servants on their toes . Lord Corlys Velaryon and his children had arrived to king's landing and was now sitting with King Jaehaerys, Queen Alysanne,Prince Baelon and Princess Rhaenys in the royal dining hall prepared for the occasion while the Velaryon siblings were taken to their chamber to sleep by heir wet nurses .
" Uncle Baelon,do you know where is Daemon ? He was not present here during Aemma's labour " Princess Rhaenys questioned . Before the spring Prince could reply, " I told you,Baelon. That son of yours doesn't care about his duties and was only interested in jousting and riding his dragon. Yesterday, I had gotten a velry good proposal from Lord Roland Royce of the Vale to make a betrothal with his only daughter to Daemon." Queen Alysanne angrily said to her son.
" I know about Daemon, mother. Even if he doesn't seem to care about the royal court, he is loyal to our family. Even now, he had gone to Dragonstone to fetch an egg for his niece. He should be coming now at anytime. And about Lord Royce's proposal, let Daemon decide about it, mother." Prince Baelon softly said to his mother. Before the Queen can reply, a piercing roar of a dragon echoed through
the walls. a knight had entered the hall and said " My King, Prnce Daemon had arrived at the dragon pit with his dragon".
" Well,  Daemon had chosen to come at the perfect timing with us speaking about him,  grandmother." Princess Rhaenys slyly replied. " Inform Prince Daemon to  come here soon." King Jaehaerys ordered. " Yes, y King " the royal gaurd replied and went away.
Meanwhile, Prince Viserys and Princess Aemma were getting ready for the celebration in their own bedchambers while their newborn daughter lied in the baby cot in her parents hared chamber.
Suddenly, the footsteps of a person echoed through the palace halls and the person stopped at the chamber where the young Princess was present.
The door of the chamber was opened by the royal gaurd to let the person in and the first thing that caught his eye was the
Cot made of mahogany wood.He then made his way and stopped right infront of the babycot.
In the moonlight,it can be seen that the person stnding there was the rogue Prince himself in a red tunic and black breaches. He was intensely gazing at the small figure lying on the cot in a white gown made of fine silks, her platinum blonde hair symbolising her as a Targaryen. That the same hot dragon blood coursing through his body is also in hers made him wondered.
As if sensing his presence, the littlest Princess opened her eyes to see the intruder.A gasp left Prince Daemon upon seeing her eyes. One emerald green and another Targaryen violet just like how his mother, Princess Alyssa, once had.
Now seeing the same eyes on his niece made his heart warm and a smile tugged in his face. " Welcome naejot īlva lentor, issa dōna darling . " Prince Daemon said to his now wiggling niece.
" I see my daughter had met her kepus already. " Prince Viserys had said while walking into the chamber. " Well, you all had been here from her. She must have yearned to see someone younger while surrounded by older people, brother "
Prince Daemon snarkily replied.
" I am only 20 summers old, Daemon. Besides who are you calling old when you yourself was going to be an adult?"
Prince Viserys retorted. " Oh Please! Don't start your verbal brawl in the presence of my daughter. I don't want her to bicker like you both." Princess Aemma intervened and said.
" Please,I had no wish to start a brawl with my brother after flying for hours on Caraxes to and from the Dragonstone. But it was so much worth it doing for my darling niece." Prince Daemon said while looking at the new addition of his family who was holded by his brother .
" Do you want to hold her, brother?" Prince Viserys asked his brother. " What if she might break in my hold?" Prince Daemon whispered. " She is not a glass,Daemon. She will not break" princess Aemma chuckled and said.
Carefully, the rogue Prince took his niece from his brother and held her in his arms. The young Princess looked at his hair and face and showed her toothless smile. The rogue Prince smiled back. " So, my daughter likes her uncle very much that she smiled for the first time." Princess Aemma said with amusement.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door and a kingsguard entered the chamber to inform that everyone of House Targaryen was present and now waiting for them. " Let's attend the family gathering, brother. Word of warning, I heard that grandmother was working on your betrothal to Lord Royce's only daughter." Prince Viserys said to his brother before walking towards the dining room with his wife.
" She can try but I won't marry anyone of her choosing " Prince Daemon muttered while following his brother while holding his niece.
" Stop talking, you both and Daemon, I knew Rhea Royce from childhood and she is an excellent leader and skilled in hunting." Princess Aemma whispered to them . Soon they reached the entrance of the royal dining hall while the guard outside announced their presence.
" Prince Viserys and his Princess consort Aemma of House Targaryen had arrived to the hall.Prince Daemon Targaryen, wielder of dark sister had arrived to the chamber."
As soon as he announced, They had entered the hall and sat on their respective seats in the table . King Jaehaerys had sat on the head of the table with Lord Corlys on the other end of the table while the old queen sat beside her husband and across her older son with Princess Rhaenys beside her husband and Pricess Aemma on her other side and across Prince Daemon.
Prince Viserys sat beside his brother and father.Prince Daemon can be seen holding his niece who was staring at the huge chandelier hanging above .
" I am glad that most of our family had  gathered here for celebrating the birth of my great granddaughter today. In her honour, let's toast for her good health and hope she brings glory to our house. Hear, hear." King Jaehaerys announced.
" Hear, hear " Everyone drank the wine in their glasses except Prince Daemon as he was only 15 summers old and still a child in their eyes. "Prince Viserys, I congratulate you for the birth of your daughter and may she grow with beauty and happiness." Lord Corlys said.
" Thank you,Lord Corlys,we are happy to see you here after sailing for a day from Dreamfort . " Prince Viserys replied back.
" Cousin,my husband and I have prepared a gift for our niece. I hope she likes it in the future " Princess Rhaenys said while signalling someone to present the gift." Oh my goodness! These are the rare type of pearls which possess different colours when shown in the sunlight " Queen Alysanne exclaimed looking at the chest of pearls in various colours. " We have imported them from the Braavos which took almost a week of sailing" Lord Corlys proudly said. " We express our gratitude for your wonderful gift, Lord Corlys " Princess Aemma said to them.
" Son , I too have prepared a gift for my granddaughter. I have named her as the Lady of the spring manor which is in the north where your mother liked to spend time " The crown Prince said to his son with mirth in his eyes." Thank you, father " Prince Viserys replied.
" Now, if you all have finished, can we start the dinner?" Queen Alysanne playfully questioned them. " Wait, grandmother .what is a Targaryen family gathering without dragons?. I too have gift for my darling niece. The one which will be the most precious to her than jewels and manors." Prince Daemon said. Everyone except Prince Baelon was puzzled at what his gift was . One of the guards came forward and kept a Iron container in the middle of the table. Prince Daemon handed his niece to her mother and opened the container took out an object.
In his hand, lays a dragon egg so white, that it shined brighter than those pearls. Everyone was perplexed at the sight of the egg ." I had never in my life saw a dragon egg of this colour. Where did you obtained this egg ,boy" King Jaehaerys questioned his grandson. " I had retrieved it from a dead dragon in a cave near Dragonstone, grandfather. It must have recently died from childbirth." Prince Daemon replied.
" Thank you, brother. It would be the most precious gift to my daughter anyone can give to her. " Prince Viserys thanked his brother. " And Aemma and I have decided a name for our child " he said to everyone present there . " And the name of my daughter will be Mariana Targaryen ,the first of her name , the Realm's Light. " Prince Viserys proudly announced."
Everyone was overjoyed about learning her name and toasted for another time but both Prince Baelon and Prince Daemon got emotional upon hearing her name. Princess Alyssa had always wished to name her daughter that but never gotten chance. Prince Baelon smiled at his eldest son for gratitude while Prince Daemon looked at his niece with a strange gaze.
The celebration continued as everyone shared shared some of the interesting incidents and ate dinner with whole heart . As wished upon, this gathering had made House Targaryen stronger than ever and hope it will remain stronger at difficult times.
Only future holds the answer to the questions.

Do you know why no one’s attempted to bond with Vermithor until now? At least in show verse. Daemon’s ego at least seems like he would have wanted him. And the way the show’s apparently bent the lore enough to where Rhaenyra can touch him unscathed..seems like Vermithor actually inexplicably liked her lol to the point where it seems had she attempted to bond with him in her youth she may have been successful.
In show-verse, we're told that Daemon wanted Meleys (his late mother's dragon), and after Meleys rejected him and accepted Rhaenys instead, he bonded with Caraxes (Rhaenys's late father's dragon). I'm not sure exactly when all this was going on in HOTD time, but in book-verse Rhaenys was 13 and Daemon was 6 when she claimed Meleys in 87 AC (three years after Alyssa had died), and Daemon didn't claim Caraxes until he was at least 11, after Aemon died in 92 AC. But either way it doesn't matter, Jaehaerys died in 103 AC, so Vermithor wasn't freed up until then.
Now, Book!Rhaenyra first rode Syrax in 104 AC, when she was 7. Show!Rhaenyra has the same birth year, and show!Jaehaerys's death year is also the same. So Vermithor was available at the time Rhaenyra first rode Syrax (assuming that show!Rhaenya also became a dragonrider at age 7). However, it is frequently assumed that Syrax was a cradle egg (though the book says nothing one way or the other, and neither has the show). In the book Syrax is called "young" when Rhaenyra first flew her; HOTD's 1st episode script, when Rhaenyra is 14, calls Syrax "adolescent". It's quite possible Rhaenyra had no interest in Vermithor because she had her birth-bonded dragon to ride once she was big enough.
Alternatively, it's possible that the Dragonkeepers warned 7-year-old Rhaenyra away from the notably grouchy and angry Vermithor and towards a younger dragon more suitable for her age, as they did when Alyssa initially wanted to claim Balerion. In general I'd suspect that would be the case for most young dragonriders, at least the ones who weren't already bonded to cradle-egg dragons. (As Rhaenyra's sons were; it's unclear whether Sunfyre and Tessarion were cradle eggs, or bonded while very young.) And we know it was suggested that Aemond pick out a dragon egg or hatchling, before he claimed Vhagar by himself.
So yeah, I figure the Dragonkeepers would very much prefer not to see a repeat of the deeply unfortunate Aerea incident, where it was Balerion in control, taking the 12-year-old girl to his definition of home, not hers. Let alone allowing a young prince or princess to get flamed to ash on their watch. When someone young does go for a massive old dragon (Laena or Aemond with Vhagar), it seems most likely it's done where the busybody protective Dragonkeepers can't interfere... which was not Rhaenyra's situation in King's Landing.
I hope that helps!

That promo shows that the writers even have team black minsunderstanding their characterization.
“They’re usurpers. Were the rightful heirs”
-Rhaenyra literally committed treason and forfeited her title when she gave birth to a white bastard child and tried to pass him off as her black husbands. Bastards can’t inherit anything.
“We do things the right way”
-when there is literally Daemon on the team.
-Killing Rhae Royce was the right thing?
-Groping your niece in public so you can ruin her reputation so the only one left to marry her is you.
-Wanting to have your baby brother tortured after your child just maimed him.
-Being smug and gloating at your big age because you see that your father cares nothing for his wife and children/your half siblings.
-Suggesting to actually kill your husband, only to have an actual murderer talk you know just faking it?
-Killing an innocent, to fake that death.
-Fleeing Kings Landing, doing nothing on Dragonstone. While letting Alicent and Otto to do all the work and successfully rule the seven kingdoms. Then coming back and insulting the people who are doing your job/
-USURPING THE BLOOD VELARYONS WITH YOUR BASTARD STRONG SON. CORLYS ALLOWING THIS TO HAPPEN TO HIS BLOOD FAMILY BECAUSE HE VALUES HIS OWN REPUTATION, EGO AND NAME OVER HIS FAMILY’S THOUSANDS YEARS OF HISTORY, BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS. “The old, the true, the brave” I think not
-Beheading Vaemond because he wasn’t standing for that shit.
-Blood and fucking cheese. The murder of babies. One of the foulest things to happen in the entire series. Up there with the abandonment, Rape and murder of Elia Martell and her babies and 11/12 year old Jeyne Poole being given to Petyr Baelish to be sold at his brothel.
“We seem like more of a family”
“Everybody gets on with each other”
-Daemon celebrated the death of Aemon and Baelon, then stole Baelon’s egg
-Rhaenys has disliked Rhaenyra since she was 14.
-Laena was a second choice and knew this all of her marriage. Daemon kept her from her family until she died.
-Daemon ignored his own child because she didn’t have a Dragon.
-Rhaenyra wanted to murder Laenor.
-Rhaenys ignored Rhaenyra’s sons, had nothing to do with them, never agreed to pretend to be their Grandmother, didn’t support Lucerys being the heir of Driftmark and only spoke in favor of him because she was backed into a corner and she also tolls in the service of men…
-Rhaenyra didn’t tell Corlys and Rhaenys their son is actually alive.
-Corlys and Rhaenys think they murdered their son. Rhaenys’a dislike is now a hatred
-Baela peaced the fuck out after that freaky Valyrian wedding and barely knows those people, especially her betrothed/stepbrothers.
-Rhaenyra’s sons are treated like royalty but Rhaena who is still hungering for her father’s attention, approval and affection is basically a glorified hostage to keep the Velaryons in line and is a servant to Rhaenyra. They have a formal where we only see Rhaena refer to her as “Princess” and “My Queen”. She seems to have no thoughts other than to serve “Her Queen”
-Daemon and Rhaenyra never gave Rhaena a new egg, yet they keeps finding eggs for each of their new pure Targaryen babies they keep having. He never took his daughter to see if she could claim one of the many at the Dragonmont. If he did why does she light up at the possibility of unclaimed dragons being used in the war? Free Rhaena
-Rhaenyra never told her son’s who their actual father is . Jace asks her and she gaslights him. She sends Luke on a mission and tells him that he has “Baratheon blood from your Grandmother Rhaenys” the boy dies with that lie being one of the last thing is mother told him even though he too knows Harwin Strong is his father. Rhaenyra doesn’t even offer him a “I’ll tell you about your father when I see you again” like Ned told Jon. Rhaenyra had no intentions of EVER telling them
-After they murdered his brother, Corlys was ready to abandon Rhaenyra, Daemon and those bastards and go back to Driftmark with Rhaenys and his real Grandchildren BUT Rhaenys reminded him that the girls are stuck with the Strong boys.
These people just seem like they just act in scenes yet they don’t actually watch the episodes to see the story come together. Either that or they’ve bought into their character’s superiority complexes. For the Team Black actors to have such a basic black and white, good vs bad outlook and understanding of their characters and see even their worst actions as good, is bad. The writers have failed to show the moral grayness of the book.
Everyone should see this post. it's just great. nothing to say 🤝🏼

If someone defends Rhaenyra’s usurpation because of tRaDiTiOn, they better be waving a Maegor banner proudly.
I’m being serious.
So many people in this fandom care about the tradition of Westerosi inheritance and act like yelling about it justifies team green’s actions. They never seem to take into consideration what it means.
This post is inspired by my allergy to inconsistency and hypocrisy. Here we go.
The only consistent tradition of Targaryen succession is the ruler choosing their own heir. Sometimes that aligned with Westerosi tradition, often it did not. And it started with the very first heir. So either you admit Maegor was the rightful heir over Aenys, or you admit he wasn’t because Aegon the Conqueror said so.
Let me explain.
Visenya was Aegon’s first wife. In Westerosi tradition, Rhaenys would be considered at best a mistress and her children out of the succession or, at the least, behind Visenya’s children. The lords accepted the validity of Aegon’s plural marriage because they didn’t have the power to oppose the Conquerors, simple as. Tradition didn’t matter in the face of dragons. It is not a genuine argument and hasn’t been since the creation of the Crown itself. House Targaryen’s exceptionalism went beyond incest and dragons from the start, and accepting Aenys as king shows the nobles accepted this when it was convenient.
So I’d like team green to be consistent. Is the king’s word law, a la Aegon choosing Aenys as his heir? Or is this a break from tradition that was only corrected when Maegor killed his nephew and took the throne?
It gets messy from here. Maegor, as we know, didn’t have a child, so he chose his great-niece, Aerea as his heir. Jaehaerys was still alive, he could’ve chosen him. Heck, that might’ve eased like a drop of the tension between him, Jaehaerys and Alyssa Velaryon. So if you’re a tradition truther, Maegor was the proper king but then chose an untraditional heir. Hmm.
Then we get to Jaehaerys, and a tradition truther might think YES, THAT’S OUR GUY. But he’s really not.
Yes, he stopped considering his eldest living child, Daenerys, as his heir after Aemon was born. But then Aemon died.
Aemon did, however, die with an heir. Her name was Rhaenys. In Westerosi tradition, she’d inherit after him, because a daughter inherits before a brother. Now, I know the lords do all sorts of things to circumvent this (see Alys Karstark), but that *is* Westerosi tradition.
Did Jaehaerys follow tradition? Nope. He picked his second oldest son, Baelon.
Some might say there are logical reasons for this. Baelon was a warrior, older, and had grown sons. Rhaenys was like 18, married to an ambitious lord not named Targaryen, and at risk of dying in childbirth (Baelon was named heir in 92, Rhaenys had her first child in 92). HOWEVER, we see with Jeyne Arryn becoming Lady of the Vale while still a *toddler* that Westerosi tradition doesn’t set aside claims merely because such concerns exist. In fact, in ASOIAF, some Lannister married an f-ing BABY to lay claim to her lands because *she* is the acknowledged inheritor.
You could argue that it matters more when it’s the Crown, and I’ll concede that while pointing out you’ve made my argument for me: isn’t that a good reason for the Crown to do what it wants instead of following traditions that hamstring it?
If you’re a tradition truther, however, you should be in a rage and insisting Rhaenys inherit, and you should be outraged by what was done to her at the Council of 101 after Baelon dies. Her claim wasn’t even considered, Laenor’s was—ya know, her toddler son who got his claim *through* her.
So then Viserys takes the throne and continues the Targaryen custom of choosing his heir. And the tradition truthers of the fandom rise up and boo, and they cry “duty and sacrifice! What about tradition!?”
Just admit that the lords of Westeros, Alicent, her merry band of greens, and the fans that make excuses for them didn’t and don’t care about tradition unless it suits them, and they only become vocal about it when a woman stands a good chance of inheriting over a man.
Viserys never wavered in his choice, the realm knew it and so did the greens. This is precisely why Rhaenyra had far more support than her brother, and why the argument that the realm wouldn’t accept her is bs. The realm DID accept her. Because they understood something many in this fandom struggle to
There was only one consistent tradition of royal succession between the Conquest and the Dance: the ruler chooses their heir.

I believe that Valyrians of old practised equal primogeniture, and the only thing an heir had to be was a dragonrider. Think about it. They practice incest, so the eldest (say, a daughter) inheriting meant that the firstborn son (say, the second eldest) would be a ruler anyway. Why overlook the dragonriding daughter for a dragonriding son when they'd both end up rulers anyway?
Also, in Old Valyrian, the world's "prince" "princess", and "heir" are all the same: dārilaros, as in, it isn't gendered. This is the biggest clue that they practised equal primogeniture in Valyria and likely gave that up in Westeros to please the misogynistic bastards there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Click for better view, from this site)
Also, they were in close proximity to the Rhoynar, and they are confirmed to practice equal primogeniture.
From what we know, Visenya was a warrior and this was accepted by her father and brother-husband as normal. She rode a dragon, which is, again, their normal. It's also heavily implied that Aegon wed Visenya to strengthen his claim to dragonstone, meaning she was the named heir of their father as the eldest no matter her gender.
The Targaryens conceeded a lot when they became Kings and Queens, one being their faith (as far as we know; they could have secretly worshipped the 14 flames of Old Valyria) and they had to have a literal contract written by Jaehaerys and the Faith to be able to continue intermarrying to keep the bloodline pure.
From this, we can extrapolate that Valyrians likely practiced equal primogeniture and it was Jaehaerys, whose best friend was a Septon, who began the trend of being a misogynistic piece of shit to the women of House Targaryen, what with how he disregarded a lot of what Alysanne said to him, disinherited Rhaenys, and allowed Lord's not of House Targaryen to choose the heir to the throne rather than let Rhaenys inherit. He also treated his daughters like absolute shit, calling Saera a whore and barely mourning Viserra, etc.
I definitely think that Jaehaerys, due to his trauma from Maegor, was slowly manipulated by Septon Barth and the men he surrounded himself with to see women as less than, and he alone planted the seeds of rebellion by giving the lords a choice in who would inherit after him when they never should have had the option because in the world of ice and fire the monarchy is absolute and the King's word is absolute law.
Jaehaerys' many mistakes gave the Hightowers a foothold and meant that the realm would undoubtedly be split when it came to the Dance because a previous king (jaehaerys) planted doubts. And also Otto schemed and plotted with alicent and likely the maesters and faith.
In naming Rhaenys heir, Jaehaerys would then have to answer the question as to why he took the throne when Rhaena and Aerea were still alive and the wife and daughter of the last King (Aegon). Jaehaerys was, in actual fact, a usurper if you looked at it at a certain point of view.
The Rightful line of succession should have gone like this going by cannon deaths etc
Aenys > Rhaena > Aerea (died)> Rhaella (if she gave up her septas's vows), or Jaehaerys > daenerys (she died young) > aemon > rhaenys > laena (dies) > Baela (jacaerys as consort) > their firstborn > so on and so forth
But it didn't. Because jaehaerys is a cunt, and so are the women hating, misogynistic andals + faith and maesters.

I am continuously perplexed at how a show as objectively bad and problematic as hotd keeps inspiring outstanding fanfics like yours and @gwenllian-in-the-abbey’s. Truly it’s a mystery to me, especially considering that the books covering the dance are supposed to be quite mediocre as well from what I’ve perceived. Just so you know, with that trailer out now I’m gonna completely blend out the events of the show and consider our fathers clad in red canon
@gwenllian-in-the-abbey AAAAAAAAAAAAAA, I think George's gonna order a hit on us:D
I'm glad you like our slightly destructive approach to teh canon. I'm mostly fueled by spite and my dislike for George's and HBO's complete disregard for the historical context of the stuff they draw their inspiration from (you can't do the Matilda vs Stephen showdown and expect the same sense of injustice, when your main conflict is about Viserys' imbecilic approach to rules, Rhaenyra's weak-ass claim and papa/dragons being her go-to solution to all her problems, Daemon being a chaos gremlin, Corlys' malignant ambition and the Hightowers being the only ones who actually care about the rule of law.)
A lesbian romance doesn't automatically turn a story into a feminist manifesto, nor does a girlboss who's treated by the narrative as the second coming of Christ. Context matters and it's a mistake to view the Dance through the lens of modern ideals about egalitarianism.
GRRM's hubris when it comes to "Aragorn's tax policies" is just another thing that enrages me and Gwenllian, because the man completely misunderstands the medieval legal codes. Just because they were complex that doesn't mean they were fucking contradictory on their own; no one wanted civil wars breaking out each time a monarch died.
Problems happened when two countries with generational beefs worked on two different principles of succession, ie. England (male-preference primogeniture) vs France (male-only primogeniture), or if there was some dynastic fuckery that completely messed up the clear-cut succession lines with usurpations and cousin marriages (Yorks vs Lancasters).

Had Richard II (the son of the Black Prince) died peacefully without issue, the succession would have followed through the line of the Duke of Clarence, with Edmund the Earl of March eventually becoming the king (and he was Richard's heir, btw).
But that's not what happened. The son of John of Gaunt usurped the throne and it was then passed down through his line, because he was the crowned king. Now, you can argue whether or not he had any right to do the usurpation in the first place and whether or not he was the legitimate king and you bet people back then argued about that too. This ambiguity is how you create a proper narrative about actually conflicting claims. The only thing propping up Rhaenyra against her brother is the fact that Viserys is a moron.
How the fuck can I take F&B seriously and without the Dead Sea's worth of salt, when it pretty much blows Jaehaerys' posthumous dick about his wisdom when he "let" the council of 101 decide the succession (while politely ignoring the fact that Jaehaerys' own claim is legit only in the cases of either full salic or semi-salic succession, ie male-only), while never once it calls out Viserys out on his extremely dangerous decision. He gets to die venerated as the peaceful grandpa and all the blame for his incompetence is piled on Aegon II and Alicent.
Let's go through the possible succession systems, shall we?
If we follow male-preference primogeniture, the legitimate line of kings ends with Aerea because she was the eldest child of Aegon the Uncrowned, Maegor's eldest nephew. Only after she and her sister die without issue, Jaehaerys can become the king. Jaehaerys' canon ascension works only because Rhaena gave up her daughters' claims. The next in line would be Aemon and after him Rhaenys. But that's not what happened.
If we follow the salic law (male only), the legitimate line of the kings goes Aegon I -> Aenys I -> Aegon Uncrowned -> Jaehaerys I -> Viserys I -> Aegon II. This is probably what Jaehaerys wanted to ensure, since he challenged Maegor's kingship in the first place.
If a crowned king can choose his heir, then Jaehaerys was never a legitimate king and Aerea was the true queen, because Maegor, who had won his crown in the trial by combat, chose her as his heir.
What about the principle of seniority? Cognatic seniority where men and women have equal claims is out of the question since Aegon I was the crowned king, not Visenya. Male-only seniority would go Aegon I -> Aenys I -> Maegor I (uncontested!) -> Aegon Crowned This Time -> Viserys the Not Tortured to Death -> Jaehaerys I -> Aemon (only if his uncle Viserys has no issue) -> Baelon -> Vaegon -> Viserys I -> Daemon (EW).
Notice the distinct lack of Rhaenyra.
Team Black keeps mentioning the widow's law, but that's a bulk of nonsense. I suppose the misunderstanding originates from a (willful) misinterpretation of this passage. The book says:
Tumblr media
Now, I highly doubt Jaehaerys intended for the law to mean that a daughter from the first marriage should come before the sons from the second. The wording is a bit unlucky, but I suppose the intention was to establish the legal position of the second wife and her children as united with the position of her step-children - she has the same duties towards them as if they were own, and the same goes the other way. Which would make sense. Because otherwise, no one would be desperate enough to marry a widower with daughters. Since we know that title and land ownerships have remained in the same families without changing hands once or twice since the implementation of the law, I really doubt the team black's literal interpretation of the passage was the one intended. Ffs, Viserys was pushed to marry again because he had only one daughter, meaning, this law wasn't viewed the way the Team Black wishes for. And I'm not even delving into the fact that this would be a female inheritance hack penned by Jaehaerys, if that was the case. Talk about ooc.
So, yeah, we're taking Gyldayne's interpretation of the past with so much salt our hearts are gonna fail.

Ever since the funeral, Vaera had felt like she was stuck in an endless loop of grief, replaying Aemon’s death over and over again in her mind.
The way he stood in front of her and Rhaegar, so brave and fierce just like his father.
His struggles against the vile fiends who seized him, the way he thrashed, screamed, and kicked at his captors.
The way his innocent amethyst eyes widened in alarm as the blade slashed at his throat.
Vaera couldn’t stop seeing his little hand grasping out for hers as his blood poured onto the stone floor.
Even Rhaegar’s voice screaming for his father to come and save them will stay with her forever.
Every night she would pray that it was just a nightmare and when she woke, she would see her sweet boy again. But it was real. All of it. She didn’t know how much longer she stand the pain.
Then one day, in her grieving haze. She wordlessly rose from the chair in her chambers, left Rhaegar with the nanny and walked the length of the corridor, ignoring the looks of the concerned guards and maids as she walked past.
Where she was going, she didn’t know. What she was doing, she didn’t know. But she walked nonetheless, her bare feet slapping against the cold stone floor of the Red Keep.
Then she was there, the room where Aemon had died. It had been shut up and abandoned since, but Vaera pushed open the door and took a step inside.
The blood stains had been cleaned but Vaera could still see them. Running like rivers in every direction.
It was there, that pain in her chest. It wouldn’t go away. She just wanted to see her sweet boy again, to hear his voice.
Then like a smiling seductress, the tendrils of salvation reached out towards her.
The open window. Beckoning to her. For weeks she had been lost in a sea of darkness, but here was the light.
This was how she would see him again. Her sweet boy, her little dragon.
Vaera opened the window as wide as it would go and clambered up onto the windowsill.
Ignoring the panicked shouts of Ser Arryk who had found her chambers empty and chased after her.
“Get Prince Aemond. Quick”.
The sun was shining, the birds were singing. Vaera closed her eyes as the wind caressed her face.
Just as she was about to step forward, Vaera heard Cannibal roaring in the distance.
Almost as if he was begging her not to do it, she could feel his sadness and despair.
“I-I have to” whispered Vaera.
Tumblr media
The squire raced through the Red Keep, towards the council chambers. Praying that he made in time.
Not even bothering to knock he burst through the wooden doors.
“P-Prince Aemond. Come quick”
“There is a council meeting in session you-“ raged Otto.
“-It’s Princess Vaera. S-She’s going to jump” shouted the young squire as he whirled around and raced out of the council chambers.
“WHAT” shrieked Aemond as he took off running after the squire, ignoring the frantic calls of his mother and brother.
Aemond’s heart was pounding in his chest as he chased after the squire.
Not to their chambers, but to the room where Aemon and Jaehaerys had been killed.
Ser Arryk was hovering near the door softly calling Vaera’s name, seemingly terrified to take another step inside the room.
When he came to a stop at the door, he understood Ser Arryk’s hesitation.
Vaera was standing at the open window, her hands gripping the frame as she teetered on the edge.
“Issa jorrāelagon” whispered Aemond (My love).
“Nyke jaelagon naejot ūndegon zirȳla aril” replied Vaera (I want to see him again).
“Nyke gīmigon ao gaomagon, yn daor raqagon bisa” (I know you do, but not like this).
Vaera shook her head and closed her eyes.
“Kostilus issa jorrāelagon” begged Aemond (Please, my love).
“We’re never going to hear the sound of his laugh or see his face again” cried Vaera.
“W-We will. In our hearts”
“He made us so happy. Him and Rhaegar” said Vaera.
“We will talk about him, every single day and we’ll laugh, and we will cry. Vaera, no one will remember Aemon like we do”.
“H-How do I stop this pain? How do I make it go away?” wailed Vaera as she staggered on the edge of the windowsill.
“We deal with it together” said Aemond is voice wobbling.
“I-I just want him back. I want him in my arms” wailed Vaera.
“I know you do. But please Vaera, don’t do this. Think about Rhaegar, he still needs his mother” cried Aemond as he motioned for the Kings guard to stay where they were.
He didn’t want to spook Vaera, she was so close to the edge. One wrong move and she’d either slip or impulsively jump.
The Cannibal and Vhagar could be heard roaring ferociously in the distance.
“I don’t know how to live without Aemon”.
“Please, my love. Do not let me also suffer the agony of losing my wife” begged Aemond.
“A-Aemond I-I can’t-“
“You are the love of my life, my reason for existence. If you die. I die. I cannot live without you. Please come away from the ledge. Please don’t-“ said Aemond as he extended his hand and slowly walked forward.
“I don’t want to forget him” sobbed Vaera quietly as her body shook.
“We won’t. I promise” said Aemond seizing his chance as he quickly lurched forward, secured his arms around Vaera’s waist, and yanked her back from the window.
Tumblr media
“How is she?” asked Aegon as he hovered near the door to Aemond and Vaera’s chambers.
“Sleeping, the maester gave her something” replied Aemond sadly as he stared at his wife’s sleeping form, her hands clutching one of Aemon’s old blankets.
“I-I’ve never seen her like that” whispered Aegon.
“I don’t know what to do brother. I-I-“ gasped Aemond, his breath catching in his throat.
Suddenly Aegon wrapped his arms around his brother and held him tight.
Aemond struggled against his brother for a moment before he broke down.
“I-I can’t s-stop-” exclaimed Aemond his face pressed against Aegon’s shoulder.
“-You don’t have to. Just let it out” urged Aegon.
Moments passed as the brothers embraced one another. Ignoring the members of the Kings guard who were hovering nearby.
“H-Helaena?” asked Aemond as he wiped his nose on his sleeve.
“Mother is always with her and the children” said Aegon softly.
“What about you?”.
“I can’t think about it. If I do I end up drinking to forget. I need to have a clear head right now. This cannot go unpunished. They took our sons. They will pay” said Aegon firmly.
“Fire and Blood” replied Aemond.
“Fire and Blood” repeated Aegon nodding.

So I have been reading about these early drafts and it looks like GRRM removed several lines referencing king's blood waking dragons from both Jon Snow and Tyrion's POV chapters in ADwD.
I have always inferred that the title of the fifth book - 'A Dance with Dragons' is not about actual dragons or a second civil war involving Targaryens, but the different conflicts and the struggle with ruling of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen at the ends of the world and a new dragon showing up with his Golden Company. So the 'dragons' here referred to people. In the same vein, when I first read Jon pondering on Maester Aemon's words of 'waking dragons', my brain just assumed that the dragons being woken up meant people i.e Jon being resurrected from death.
I therefore missed that for Jon himself, 'waking dragons from stone' must mean hatching dragon eggs! Which must mean that Jon thinks either that there are dragon eggs at the Wall which Mel knows about or that Stannis/Mel have dragon eggs in their possession.
Interestingly all this is in the text that GRRM removed from early drafts. It's important to note that GRRM did not remove all references - clearly this is important foreshadowing. However, it's possible he felt there was an overemphasis of this clue instead of subtle foreshadowing and ended up removing the other references.
Also interesting that while in the published book, Jon hears of king's blood used to wake dragons from Maester Aemon (Who hears it from Stannis' men) in the drafts it's Gilly who informs him of the danger to not only Mance but also to his baby. So in the early drafts it's Gilly herself who asks that Jon do something to save Mance and his baby. GRRM changes that whole set up, writing Jon Snow in a harsher light and it's Jon who tells Gilly what will happen to Mance's baby and forces her to part with her own child.
In ADwD:
Burning dead children had ceased to trouble Jon Snow; live ones were another matter. Two kings to wake the dragon. The father first and then the son, so both die kings. The words had been murmured by one of the queen's men as Maester Aemon had cleaned his wounds. Jon had tried to dismiss them as his fever talking. Aemon had demurred. "There is power in a king's blood," the old maester had warned, "and better men than Stannis have done worse things than this." The king can be harsh and unforgiving, aye, but a babe still on the breast? Only a monster would give a living child to the flames. - Jon, ADwD
"Refuse, and the boy will burn. Not on the morrow, nor the day after … but soon, whenever Melisandre needs to wake a dragon or raise a wind or work some other spell requiring king's blood. Mance will be ash and bone by then, so she will claim his son for the fire, and Stannis will not deny her. If you do not take the boy away, she will burn him." - Jon, AdwD
Clydas is only a steward, and his eyes are going bad. You need a maester. Maester Aemon is so frail, a sea voyage … it might … he's old, and …" "His life will be at risk. I am aware of that, Sam, but the risk is greater here. Stannis knows who Aemon is. If the red woman requires king's blood for her spells …" "Oh." Sam's fat cheeks seemed to drain of color. - jon, adwd
In the published book, these are the only references to King's blood and waking dragons.
So what's in the early 2004 drafts: It's Gilly who informs him of the Queen's men and king's blood.
"They were queen's men said it, with the burning heart on them." She touched her breast with a small fist, to show where they wore Melisandre's badge. "One said the red woman wants king's blood to wake some dragon up..." "The last dragon died in King's Landing during the reign of King Aegon the Third," Jon said. "Mance will die... but for his crimes, not his blood."
And then Gilly tells Jon in the draft what Maester Aemon tells Jon in the published book.
"M'lord, she wants them both. The father first, and then the son, we heard one o'them say. That way they both die kings. Two kings to wake the dragon.
Then there is the deleted part where Jon Snow is actually thinking of dragon eggs at the Wall from the OG Targaryens!! Or that Stannis has Dragon eggs he brought with him from Dragonstone.
There were dragons here two hundred years ago. Queen Alysanne had flown here on one such beast, and her king had come on his own dragon to escort her home. Could the dragons have left something of herself behind? A clutch of eggs, perhaps? As a boy he'd heard tales of dragon's eggs at King's Landing and on Dragonstone, but never at the Wall. Unless Stannis brought them with him. He came from Dragonstone, where House Targaryen bred dragons for hundreds of years.
And another deleted part from one of the many conversations Jon has with Stannis
"Do I appear a fool, Lord Snow? I'd need to be, to trust the word of an oathbreaker. Rayder sealed his own fate. The law says death." "And there is power in a king's blood," added Melisandre, softly, "power we may need before our war is done." Though she did not speak of dragons, Jon sensed them moving in the smoke behind her words. A cold finger walked up his spine, and he resolved to say nothing of the child.
Deleted part of Jon's thoughts when 'Mance Rayder' is burned:
Every time the fire licked upwards, more branches tumbled free, cherry red and black. Jon thought of Gilly's whispered words, but no dragons came rising from the pit, only sparks and cinders. So much for the power of king's blood. Perhaps it had all been idle talk after all.
Deleted part of Jon's thoughts when Stannis unsheaths Lightbringer:
The Wall itself turned red and pink and orange, as waves of color danced across the ice. King's blood, Jon thought. Is this the power of king's blood?
Early draft of the Tyrion chapters indicates that references to King's blood from the Maelys story was also removed from the published chapters.
Tumblr media
So in this early draft, Maelys actually burns his own son to use king's blood to wake dragons. Could it be that GRRM removed this early clue as to what Stannis Baratheon will be doing to his daughter to wake dragons?
Could it be that a desperate Stannis, losing on all fronts and the icy winter closing in, decides that he really needs the firepower of a dragon and end up burning Shireen?
Very well could be. I just think there was just way too many references here. Clearly even GRRM felt like this was really hammering in the point a bit too much and ended up removing most of it.
So yeah, I think there's definitely going to be a 'dragon' woken up with king's blood in TWoW. Whether it's an actual dragon hatching from a hidden cache of dragon eggs or a person being resurrected from the dead, we will have to read and find out (If we do end up getting the next book some day)

So, I have a theory. It's just a theory, it's probably not true, but it's mine and it's not disproven by the text and it fits within the text so I'm taking it.
I think Aemon didn't have any more children in order to safeguard Rhaenys's claim. I think Baelon moved to have lots of children to safeguard the Targaryen line.
Both of these can be impacted by other things, such as Baelon and Alyssa wanting lots of kids, plus we don't know specifics on whether or not Jocelyn could have had more children or how the labour was for her. And there's always the asterisk of this all being a faux history book so it's all conjecture and even when it isn't, it's because a writer said so, rather than anything truly biological or logical.
But when it comes to the succession, this theory makes perfect sense. Baelon and Aemon were thick as thieves. They loved each other. And they had parents who were strict and stringent about having as many kids as possible and as many heirs. They were both smart men. Aemon, particularly, seemed to be an ideal heir: he wasn't shirking his duties, he was Master of Law. He would know how weak his line was, no matter how strong a candidate Rhaenys is, tragedy occurs (he has witnessed the deaths of siblings), and the ideal is always to have many issue.
“I will leave the making of law to you, brother,” Prince Baelon declared, whilst drinking to Prince Aemon’s appointment. “I would sooner make sons.”
So, how can you propagate the Targaryen dynasty whilst also not making the daughter of the heir's succession a potential minefield? Easy. Don't give her brothers. Give her cousins. All being well, Aemon would have become King and formally installed his daughter as heir. Rhaenys would have then had children of her own and the line would have been concrete, clear and unassailable.
But, what if something happened to Rhaenys? Aemon couldn't be left without an heir. They needed somewhere else to go, as well as other ways to strengthen the Targaryen rule just in general.
Aemon is to be king, Baelon most like will be his Hand [...]
Enter his best-buddy Baelon. Baelon would become his brother's heir, in the event that Rhaenys died, and so then his children would come after him, provided Rhaenys had no children. Baelon needs to have as many as possible because Aemon, if he wants to safeguard his daughter's claim and have her succession be without conflict, cannot have any more children.
And, no doubt, the sons hope that their children will be as close as they were. That Viserys and Daemon will shield Rhaenys's back and make their House strong, as well as carry on the name and the blood and all of that. They would be there to protect her from anyone who might ferment rebellion at the idea of a ruling Queen. Even if Rhaenys had died in childbirth to an heir, Viserys and Daemon could safeguard that child until they came of age - they can ensure Aemon's legacy.
[...] for in Prince Aemon and Prince Baelon His Grace had the proverbial “heir and a spare,” and seldom has the realm been blessed with two more able princes. In 62 AC, at the age of seven, Aemon was formally anointed Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne. Knighted at seventeen, a tourney champion at twenty, he became his father’s justiciar and master of laws at six-and-twenty. [...] Though [Baelon] and Aemon enjoyed a healthy rivalry, no man doubted the love that bound them. The succession appeared solid as stone.
Aemon and Baelon just never thought that Aemon would go first. In that, the plan falls apart. They never saw this tragedy coming. Not only that, but rather than elevate Rhaenys and keep the family close... Baelon, Viserys and Daemon would be gifted her Crown and tear the family apart.

DAEMON BALLFYRE THEORY
it’s an unserious name but a serious theory!!!
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT QUENTYN BALL
If Daemon had ridden over Gwayne Corbray . . . if Fireball had not been slain on the eve of battle . .
-small mention from eustace in the sword sword
For his hot head and red hair. Ser Quentyn Ball was the master-at-arms at the Red Keep. He taught my father and my uncles how to fight. The Great Bastards too. King Aegon promised to raise him to the Kingsguard, so Fireball made his wife join the silent sisters, only by the time a place came open, King Aegon was dead and King Daeron named Ser Willam Wylde instead. My father says that it was Fireball as much as Bittersteel who convinced Daemon Blackfyre to claim the crown, and rescued him when Daeron sent the Kingsguard to arrest him. Later on, Fireball killed Lord Lefford at the gates of Lannisport and sent the Grey Lion running back to hide inside the Rock. At the crossing of the Mandel, he cut down the sons of Lady Penrose one by one. They say he spared the life of the youngest one as a kindness to his mother.
-egg says this in the mystery knight, bolded parts mine
Daemon was the name Daena gave to this child, for Prince Daemon had been the wonder and the terror of his age, and in later days that was seen as a warning of what the boy would become. Daemon Waters was his full name when he was born in 170 AC. At that time, Daena refused to name the father, but even then Aegon's involvement was suspected. Raised at the Red Keep, this handsome youth was given the instruction of the wisest maesters and the best masters-at-arms at court, including Ser Quentyn Ball, the fiery knight called Fireball. He loved nothing better than deeds of arms and excelled at them, and many saw in him a warrior who would one day be another Dragonknight.
The king sent the Kingsguard to arrest Daemon before he could take his plans for treason any further. Daemon was forewarned, and with the help of the famously hot-tempered knight Ser Quentyn Ball, called Fireball, he was able to escape the Red Keep safely. Daemon Blackfyre's allies used this attempted arrest as a cause for war, claiming that Daeron had acted against Daemon out of no more than baseless fear. Others still named him Daeron Falseborn, repeating the calumny that Aegon the Unworthy himself was said to have circulated in the later years of his reign: that he had been sired not by the king but by his brother, the Dragonknight.
-these are both from TWOIAF, again bolded and italicized parts mine.
WHAT STICKS OUT TO ME
Quentyn is married, a landless knight, and clearly older than Daena - it’s not just about a man “spoiling” a young, royal maiden but imo also that Quentyn specifically would get in a LOT of trouble because he is low class (see: Bonifer & Rhaella) and married to boot
He was master at arms, which gives him the ability to be in Daemon’s life without arousing suspicion from anyone, and also proximity to Daena to allow for an affair, even with her on the Maidenvault.
He’s name dropped SEVERAL times and he’s clearly very important to the founding of the Blackfyre Rebellion despite being both very lowborn and also dying in a kinda lame way (not even during the battle, just by a lone archer)
He wanted so badly to be on the kingsguard he forced his wife into the Silent Sisters, only to be denied by Daeron
He seemed to be on good terms with Aegon IV
Everyone seems real sure that the daddy was Aegon and we’re not given a reason why
Aegon doesn’t claim Daemon as his bastard until after (presumably) Daena has died
Also, Aegon doesn’t claim Daemon as his bastard until after all of the Great Bastards have been born
EYE think that Aegon IV was purposefully trying to have a bastard that could challenge Daeron, and that his affairs weren’t just like lust, boredom, wanting to disrespect Naerys & Aemon, etc. There is, imo, a shift in his mistresses being just, any woman he has access to - Falena, Bellegere, Cassella, and Meg - to woman who are highborn maidens from powerful families in Westeros - the Blackwoods, Brackens, and Lothstons. Even Serenei fits in here, given that Targ-looking wives from Lys & Volantis are not uncommon before or after Aegon IV. He’s even mentioned as still having a role in Aegor’s life by visiting him, potentially trying to groom him to rebel. But then everything with the Brackens blows up in his face (which is his own fault tbc), and Brynden is an emo fuck with red eyes, and Shiera is a girl. Then Daena dies…..and an opportunity opens up. Daemon looks like a Targaryen, no one knows who the father is, but for some reason everyone already suspects him (imo this is due to Rhaenyra’s boys looking like Harwin - like just a misogyny thing that SURELY Daemon couldn’t get his look from his mother alone, look at Rhaenyra’s kids vs Alicent’s), so publicly claiming Daena’s child at last gives him the perfect rival against Daeron.
ALSO, we have a few times in the story where someone joins the Kingsguard to be closer to a woman they want to protect - Aemon & Naerys, Jaime & Cersei, and Loras & Margaery. I think Lewyn & Elia likely fall under this as well. I think it makes sense Quentyn would see joining the Kingsguard as an opportunity to be closer to both Daena & Daemon especially given his low class status; skilled knights can rise to the Kingsguard even from lowborn or baseborn backgrounds. ALSO ALSO again, our only evidence of Aegon IV being the dad is, ya know, Aegon himself. Daena stayed silent her entire life on the subject. I like to think she had a reason for this - not that she protecting Aegon, but that she was protecting Quentyn.

Jahaerys decided to let the Lords of Westeros in because he had doubts about Viserys.
He was quick to choose Baelon as his heir after Aemon's death because Baelon has proven himself in battle and his intelligence has earned him the title of Hand of the King.
Visery's life before he was chosen as heir was unremarkable; the only thing that is memorable is the time he was temporarily Balerion's rider, and that was a point of argument for his claim during the Great Council of 101.
Jahaerys was too proud to name Rhaenys heir, especially after naming Baelon, creating a precedent that only males should have the throne and that would cause a war years after his death. And to think Rhaenys died because of that as well.
I just know Alysanne gave him an earful when the dance started.

Rhaenyra and Laenor conceive Velaryon looking children au
Rhaenyra and Laenor had consulted different healers and fertility witches from Essos so they can have children without sex. One of the methods worked and Rhaenyra got pregnant. After 8 months and a half, she gave birth to Jacearys who had her hair and Laenor's skin and eye color. Rhaenyra reveled in the bewildered look Alicent had on her face. Rhaenyra is not as blind as her father when it comes to the little whore. She heard the whispers of bastardy from her early pregnancy days. She knows that the green court believed the whispers to be true. The looks on their faces were very entertaining. The looks, however, changed from bewilderment to fear when Jace's egg had hatched while none of her siblings hatched dragons and they were all too young to claim one.
It didn't take long after the egg hatched for the assassination attempts to begin. The first attempt happened during a council meeting. He was a spoiled lord from a minor house from the reach who has never killed anyone, let alone a child, before. He broke down weeping. Truly, it is a marvel that he was able to reach the nursery. He was executed by dragonfire. The second attempt happened during the night. This time the assassin was a professional but he died by the white cloaks. The third attempt happened during early morning. It was one of the nursing maids who feed the prince Daeron and prince Jacaerys. Vermax burned her but did not kill her. She was fired and the attempt was ruled an accidental event. After the third attempt, Rhaenyra and Laenor went to Viserys and they both questioned how is it that Daeron and Jacaerys share everything but it is always Jacaerys that is targeted in these attempts. Alicent protested loudly over the insinuation and begged Viserys to not let them insult her. Viserys had not believed that there is any foul play in those attempts and that assassinations attempts happen all the time when you are a prince of the realm. After many attempts to force Viserys to begin an internal investigation over who could be behind those attempts, Rhaenyra and Laenor had decided that it would be safer for their son to live in Dragonstone.
After the move, Rhaenyra only went to the red keep when there was a council meeting. Viserys had been upset over the new development but would not move a finger against his wife. After Rhaenyra gave birth to Lucerys, she had a dream of the demise of the dragons and the conspiracies that are against the house of the dragon since Aegon's conquest. She woke up and decided to answer Alicent's call of war with action. She had gathered her family for a consultation and shared with them her dream and Aegon's dream. Rhaenys being Aemon's heir had already known about Aegon's dream and agreed that some form of action should be taken. Corlys, eager to avenge the lack of action against the Triarchy and the insult to his daughter, offered to take the Velaryon fleet and block ships from arriving to Oldtown. He had also suggested to bribe Greyjoy to move against the Lannisters. Rhaenys then suggested to turn the smallfolk against the king and his green woman which should be easy if it came out that Otto was the main reason why Viserys neglected the smallfolk. Alicent had never endeared herself to the smallfolk the way Aemma did. It would be easy to turn them against her.
A year after, Viserys held an emergency meeting over the complaints he's getting from Oldtown. There had been a blockade and the ships have to divert to deliver their shipment to Oldtown. The extra time led to Oldtown receiving spoiled food. Alicent wanted him to call on the Velaryon and Lannister fleets to solve the blockade. Rhaenyra, however, catered to his peacekeeping tendencies. She minimized the threat of the blockades. It certainly is a problem that doesn't concern the crown and a few blockades won't make the people of Oldtown suffer. She was also certain that Viserys does not want to show too much preference to one house. He is known to be a fair king and any special treatment would not be perceived well. This had shut down all opposition.
A year later, things had only gotten worse. The blockade matter did resolve itself. No one found out who was behind it. Shipments are being received more regularly. They have new problems now. Septs and houses are being set on fire. Oldtown is not the only place with problems. The Greyjoys ransacked small towns surrounding Lannisport and the smallfolk started to revolt against the king. Rhaenyra eventually had to intervene with the smallfolk and send them food and she dedicated a specific amount to orphanages. Rhaenyra had also conducted an investigation regarding the fires in Oldtown. It was found out that some of the maesters were experimenting in making weapons that would be more effective against dragons and they had to practice using the weapons somewhere. Those maesters were brought up and executed by dragon fire. After Viserys had found out how the actions of his daughter brought peace to the realm again, he invited the lords and ladies of major houses to kingslanding. He also invited Rhaenyra and the Velaryons. In front of the entire council and the Velaryons, Viserys announced that he intends to name Rhaenyra regent queen. The green council were beyond themselves and were reminding the king that he is still healthy (HA!) with many years till his reign end. Rhaenyra said that she cannot accept being a regent. You could hear a pin drop in the council room. Alicent looks like she was going to faint. She repeated her sentiment and said that she only needs a favor from his Grace. To conduct an internal investigation on the assassination attempts on Jacaerys. This time, Viserys agreed since he owed Rhaenyra after she restored the peace of the realm. The investagation yielded shocking results. It was discovered that Alicent, Otto, Larys Strong, Tyland Lannister, and others were behind the assassination. Viserys ordered them to be thrown in the black cells. Alicent was crying and screaming profanities. She called Rhaenyra a witch and a heretic but she was dragged away all the same. That night, Viserys had a heart attack but still survived. Now, Rhaenyra truly needed to step up as regent before the green council exploit the opportunity. Her reign began that night even if she only had the regent title. She had Otto, Larys, and Tyland executed and shipped Alicent and her children to Oldtown, ensuring that her half siblings won't be able to claim a dragon.
Even though, Rhaenyra had won in all the means of the word, she could not forgive nor forget the torment Alicent put her through. She needed to take everything from Alicent, the same way Alicent had taken everything away from her. While Rhaenyra knew that Alicent was not the mastermind behind the plan to seduce Viserys, Rhaenyra also knew that Alicent was not entirely innocent. A lady in their world cannot afford to be too naive to not believe that Otto wanted Viserys to bed her. Alicent, who had always been too self-righteous about her gods, knows that bedding a man who is not her husband is a sin to the seven, yet she did it anyway. Alicent had taken their friendship and trampled on it. She had comforted Viserys without doing her duty to Rhaenyra. She had destroyed Viserys' image to Rhaenyra. Before her mother's death, Rhaenyra had thought that she was the problem. Her father had loved her mother and had she been born a boy then her father would not have tortured her mother with multiple pregnancies and miscarriages. After she heard her father announce that he would wed Alicent, she knew that she was not the problem. He is. If he had loved her mother, he wouldn't immediately bed Alicent. Rhaenyra heard from the servants that Alicent had visited him the night of the funeral. They also told Rhaenyra that they found blood on the sheets ten days after the funeral. Rhaenyra's own dreams had showed her proof of this. Rhaenyra was never the problem, her father was. Otto was the problem. Alicent was too. It isn't enough to exile Alicent and kill her father. She had to take her children too. Ruin them the same way Alicent ruined Rhaenyra.
Rhaenyra had called her brothers to become squire and called her sister to be her lady in waiting. This action was seen as benevolent by the court but it was anything but. From her dreams, Rhaenyra had already known a lot about her siblings. No matter what happens, Helaena would not be able to handle the pressure of the court and the ladies who were ignored in favor of her mother would retaliate against her ten fold the insult they perceived. Eventually, Helaena would ask her sister to return to Oldtown. When she did, Alicent had admonished Helaena for ruining her only chance at finding a husband. Aegon was already known be a drunkard and a whoremonger but to be known as such and to be seen as such are two different things. There are still lords who are in favor of Aegon being named heir. Rhaenyra's spies had told her that Alicent had been in contact with those lords and hope to usurp her when Viserys died. The moment Aegon is alone in the court, without his mother, he would not care for appearances and would lose his allies. Aemond would be too busy following their uncle Daemon in order to learn everything in hopes of receiving a dragon than to focus on keeping his brother in line. His obsession with dragons would lead him to be maimed when the Cannibal (the last dragon Aemond tried to claim) rejects him. Daeron has the best fate out of the Hightargs. He shares the same queer taste as Laenor. He would be completely enamored with Lucerys and would follow Lucerys to Driftmark when the time comes. Alicent would see the downfall of her children and would be unable to do anything.
