So, yes, Charles is used to his name being a top tweet on Twitter. Except, now it’s almost two months after the start of the season and Pierre is blowing up his phone with texts because apparently he broke twitter after fans realized he was dating Lewis Hamilton in secret all along. The Lewis Hamilton. International rockstar, gay icon, activist (?), multiple times Grammy winner (?) and apparently, Charles’ secret boyfriend.

Hiiii

I always describe Trishe Horton as a methodical plant enthusiast who's real intense about gardening and farming, bullet journaling/studying, and cooking for her loved ones. She's pan. She has a real soft earthy aesthetic that contrasts so well with her resting bitch face, firm tone, and dark humor.

I attach music genres to my ocs. It's how I make sense of them. Trishe isn't much of a music person (really my only oc where that's the case, pretty wild) but she's in the lofi beats, alt rock and folk rock, international jazz realms with a hint of r&b courtesy of her best friend, Di, another one of my ocs.

Trishe is hilarious to me. Her dialogue is so much fun, especially since her voice is in the lower register and the tone doesn't change too drastically when she speaks. Some examples of dialogue/Trishie actions:

"If I had the grim reaper’s number, I’d send him my location like three times a day. Just in case he wants to make his week a little more spicy. Perhaps break a few rules."

"Gender doesn’t create Haku. Haku creates gender,” Trishe explains. “That’s my claim. Furthermore, Haku is a dragon who disguises himself as an alleged human boy. So, that’s even more evidence that he doesn’t play by the rules of the straights. So, really, he’s genderless. Not androgynous at all if you look at the bigger picture. I can write a whole dissertation on this.”

Trishe would do these tedious dares like “Go outside and pick exactly 40 blades of grass with a pair of tweezers.” Everyone is like “We don’t have a lawn.” Trishe is like, “I’m aware,” with a dead serious face on.

She's very responsible despite how indifferent she is to hearing people describe her as such. She can't deny that she enjoys leading or facilitating things. Her tendency to be straightforward can get her in trouble, but she can and will provide cushion for loved ones whenever someone confronts her about it. Big reveal: She's actually one of my mushiest ocs.

If you ask her, she'll say she values honesty, spirituality and sour cream and onion chips.

Nadji White. This is my baby boy. He's been with me since I was like 13/14, and actually started out as a side character that I used to nurture one of my other characters for a bit, but as Nadj usually does he was like, "Naaaah, I'm stayin lol" and that he did.

Best way I can describe him is goofy new york nigga. Like, for real. He's always been that, but definitely has had some major development this year. Astronomical.

Lets start off with some random facts that come to mind. He's the eldest of four. He's heavy into comics (mainly Marvel) and viddy games. The genres of music I associate him with are (mainly...bc damn, he has so many playlists) diff kinds of rap but especially Chicago rap, funk - most of his music has funk elements, and alt r&b in the steve lacy/frank ocean arena. He also loves trap beats made from gaming music and old cartoon theme songs.

Also, he's very intense about cereal. Ask me to explain his theory about Kix. I dare you.

Nadji draws! Ask him and he'll say he's a graffiti artist first. Started out doing caricature art in high school, then moved to comics and graffiti and street art on both wall and canvas. He has an art collective that he puts together over the years, starting in high school (that I still haven't named lol). They too are my faves.

All of them brought together because of art but they like to think of themselves as a "we do whatever the fuck we feel" kind of crew so there are musicians, actors, and models. There's a photographer/filmmaker, someone crochets and makes rugs, someone does hair, they do comedy sketches, there's a fashion designers, someone paints. another dances. And so on.

Nadj is definitely a problematic fave. He can be a sweetie, but he's so damn mean when he wants to be. As well as selfish. Stupid lol. His growth as a character is one that even surprises me. Oh also should mention he is indeed a part of the alphabet mafia.

there’s a lot of ocs to talk about, because i wanted to make the magical school everyone goes to seem realistic in the way that there are tons of classmates… so um, here are my three hundred ocs, plus some extras. this got way longer than i expected lol

Pallet: her name is technically Penelope, but no one calls her that. she’s an artist, which means she can bring her art to life for a short period of time. she uses this skill to get revenge on the other art students who steal her brushes. she has a crush on the cute girl who works in the school gardens, but they’ve never actually done anything more than make eye contact. Pallet is also mute and uses ASL, although she also likes to mess with people by playing “living pictionary.”

Tinilia: Ara’s absolute best friend/vague crush. separate from Ara, she has braincells, but when you put the two together it’s just “wow i’m gay and want to commit arson with you.” Tinilia has a lot of nicknames… Tils, Tilly, Tinsel, etc. she’s pretty popular, probably because she’s such a generally funny person. however… she has a lot of secrets. the first one being, what exactly is her magic?? and why is she so friendly with that crow? she’s also… not having a fun time with all of these time resets.

Ella: the “mean girl” with a famous dad and a modelling career already set in action. her magic is makeup art and swimming- giving her water and shapeshifting-like powers. she hates Ara for seemingly no reason, but later they end up being amazing friends. their relationship development is my favorite thing. watching them go from disastrous rivals who hate each others guts to roommates who are disgustingly domestic and act like a couple is… fun. it sucks that it takes a tragedy to get them to bond, though.

Caden: one of the schools triplets (one of them is adopted but no one is allowed to mention it), Caden is possibly the most horrifying magic user. he’s a Nursing Gifted who spends a large amount of school time interning with the school nurse. he can speed up the rate someone’s wounds heal at the cost of his own energy. he can also slow your heartbeat, stop it, inflict wounds, transfer wounds from one person to another, or anything along these lines. luckily, he’s a pacifist. he’s also one of the three “parents” of their grade, a major Mom friend.

Maryline: she’s the one who gives Caden nightmares. we’re not… entirely sure what her Gift is, actually, we just know she can do things like float and pull really fun pranks. she’s… a cat-loving mischief-maker who skips class all of the time. ngl she’s a bit of a mystery, but she’s incredibly important for some of her secrets. such as- her relation to Ara, her source of magic, why she seems so nervous when everyone mentions the antagonist (although not for the reason you’d think), and what exactly a Keeper is. she also is one of the few who are aware of the time resets that Ara keeps doing, and she’s not thrilled- but she’ll never tell Ara that.

Rain: a musician! her violin, trumpet, piano, and vocal skills are formidable, and if she wants to she can use them like a siren would. she’s the second parent, the Dad friend, who’s incredibly exhausted but still manages to reign everyone else in. her best friend, Orange (no that’s not her actual name, she’s just a redhead who has a citrus allergy), has a very interesting character arc- she starts out very quiet and reclusive and ends up a major flirt who wrecks havoc everywhere. Orange is a painter, a photographer, and a theatre kid- she has magic with all three, which means she’s always falling asleep in class.

Bri: Asrian’s half-sister! she’s the school Mood Ring- her eyes change color depending on the emotions of the people around her. her magic is psychology, she’s a Counselling Gifted, which allows her to sense people’s emotions and understand why. she also, uh, bottles her own up. 

andddd some extra ocs, who aren’t students at their magic school:

Reve and Persephone: the last queens of the largest kingdom in Ancient Aromae. they were involved in a lot. long story short, Reve was a princess who went undercover during a war and ended up hiding in a captured kingdom with Persephone, an engineer/pilot who pretended to know her to protect her from authorities. after a very long adventure to win the war, the two got married, and…. well, i can’t reveal much, but they were involved in the end of Aromae. there was a reason that Aromae and Earth collided, forming Aromayan Earth and wiping everyone’s memories, making it seem like nothing had ever happened and that Earth still existed. 

Elena: majorcharactermajorcharactermajorcharacter- Elena is the High Goddess of Ancient Aromae. there were plenty of smaller gods and religions worshipping them, but Elena was in charge of overseeing everything. she’s also the woman who created my worlds version of soulmates- reincarnation had already existed, and she invented a way for relationships to grow strong enough that, while still breakable, they could transcend lifetimes. in the process, she took three souls and permanently made them soulmates, with no way for the bond to be broken. there’s a big reason for this! 

Raine: one of Rain’s past lives! they share a name, lmao. Raine is the Ancient Aromayan version of King Arthur- she was a queen who ruled over a great kingdom during a time where magic-users were prosecuted. she also incidentally fell in love with a witch, but that’s besides the point. the common time system in Ancient Aromae was centered around her- BC was “before coronation” and AD was “after Dolivaesal” (referring to her kingdom’s fall). the years of her reign (and the few years her daughter reigned) are called the Negative Years! imagine being so powerful they name time after you.

I want to clarify something.

I’m less upset with Gabriel being the reason Adrien can’t do the things he want, I’m more upset that when the show need someone to blame when it comes to Adrien, it’s always Gabriel’s fault.

I mean, it is mostly Gabriel’s fault but not every single instance is Gabriel’s fault.

I am fine not knowing why Adrien is absent in Kitty Section. He’s a busy guy, so it’s not surprising if he cannot fully commit to the band when he has modelling, fencing lessons, chinese classes, superheroes duties, who knows what else.

Marinette declines Philippe’s offer for skating lessons due to her superheroes duties, so it’s not surprising if Adrien does the same when he’s already busy.

However, when you have a comment from the creator on social media saying, ‘Oh, he’s absent bc his dad doesn’t allow him to go‘, it changes perspective. It implies that Adrien wants to join the band but he can’t since dad says no.

Gabriel is an ass but he shouldn’t be used as excuse to everything, especially when there’s no mention of him in the episode. Even Adrien exists for a minute to know there’s trouble since there’s no news coverage. In fact, if there’s news coverage, I’m sure he’s either on the phone or on the computer or in front of the TV because he watches news all the time.

Just explain you don’t want Adrien to be there because otherwise the narrative won’t work, or explain that as much as he wants to join the band, he has other commitments. Maybe he can be a guest musician during their performances?

Overall, as long as you don’t see the tweet explaining Adrien’s absence, it is safe to assume he’s absent because he’s busy. However, since fandom treat creator’s words as canon (which you don’t have to do so since words can change over time), this goes to the pile of ‘Gabriel Agreste is a trash’.

We know Gabriel is a terrible person but there’s no need to remind us when the narrative is still confused whether to have the audience sympathize with Gabriel or whack Gabriel.

THE RUNDOWN

leigh’s mom left early on in his life, and he was raised by an alcoholic/abusive dad, his dad chilled out when he got into a relationship with a woman named Tiffany but even she wasn’t safe for leigh.

he grew up with siblings and he always took care of them before himself. 

at 14 he was put into foster care with his siblings after a lot of social workers passed by the house. leigh was ripped away from his family and he started to rebel with each foster home he went to.

he eventually landed a nice foster home with a nice couple (leighton & Andrea Holt) and they gave him the chance for a whole new life.

through learning how to be a part of the Morrison family, leigh grew a relationship with Mr. Morrison. they conversed about music, specifically 80′s rock and roll. Leigh learned to admire bands like Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, KiSS, etc. 

didn’t mean he wasn’t a bad kid bc oh boy he was super bad, did all the drugs, all the parties. he grew addicted and had an overdose at 17, giving up on everything and it wasn’t until he saw his foster parents the next day along with his siblings that gave him hope, and the thought that he wouldn’t fuck it up again.

so he tried, and his foster parents got him a guitar, that’s when he started his own band bc he discovered he really has a passion for music. 

LIFELINE

Lifeline is the name of leigh’s band.

I basically base their sound of Skillet, and other bands but MAINLY Skillet.

Lifeline got big once leigh and his friends graduated high school. 

they toured with VANS: Warped Tour almost every summer, that’s how his band got recognized.

The band started collabing with pop stars and other artists to create a rock fusion kind of sound while keeping rock elements in the music.

Personally, leigh doesn’t stick to the rock genre, it’s just the one he’s most comfortable with.

leigh doesn’t have a relationship with his father, he choses not to look back.

once Lifeline took off, leigh changed his old name and gave himself a new one honoring leighton morrison, the man that he considers his father now. 

the morrisons officially adopted leigh when he was 18 - yeah he was old, but they wanted to be considered family legally too. so leigh was super emotional during that day, and he never is. 

everything was going good until ... leighton morrison passed away from a heart attack and leigh didn’t hear about this until after one of his shows. it was supposed to be a good show but it wasn’t when he got the call from mrs morrison. 

it’s been tough for leigh ever since. 

Lifeline is already known to be ... a lot to handle (think motley crue), but now with leigh caring less, they’re a lot worse. they trash hotel rooms, blow cars on fire, go streaking --- and most of it are leigh’s idea

CURRENTLY 

leigh and Lifeline are touring, during promotional work, but a lot of their promotional work is in New York so he doesn’t really leave too often. 

he’s secluded himself from his band unless he’s performing, so most of the time you can catch him in his small apartment, playing on his guitar or bass, figuring out some lyrics.

he’s doing his very best not to spiral down again, and thankfully because he’s older, and so are his siblings, he’s able to have support from his adopted family and his actual family.

He was born and raised in New York, down in the streets of Brooklyn

He’s an only child and he comes from a pretty wealthy family so his relationship with his parents has always been cold and distant, they were always too busy working/making money and he was always being cared by the nanny in turn or his grandparents during the weekends 

They were the typical rich parents that didn’t care much about his kid but they always gave him everything he wanted/asked for so yeah he grew up pretty lonely but spoiled too u can say 

Since a young age he developed a big love for music probably bc his grandpa used to play him his Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, etc (u know, classic and amazing music) records all the time, like he would teach him about his favorite artists and little Danny was just so amazed by all of it 

His grandpa passed away when he was only 15 and this was a thing that rlly affected him and he still misses him to this very day, he always cites him as the reason why he started loving music and one of his biggest inspirations

He started to play guitar at 13 when he got a guitar for Christmas and since then he’s learned to play basically every instrument but his favorite is and will always be the piano

During his middle school/high school days he was your typical trouble boy, causing trouble all over the streets of New York with fellow wealthy spoiled kids who found alcohol a fun thing to try at only 15 LMAO he also was always pissing teachers off at school and stuff (we all know a kid like this, don’t we LOL)

Before starting his senior year of high school he decided to drop out and rejected his parents offer of attending Columbia University after graduating and instead decided to move to L.A to pursue a music career, he was just too confident he’d make it and didn’t want to “waste” any more time at school and since his parents never cared enough they didn’t try to stop him but instead gave him the all commodities so he could move in there

After a few months of living in L.A he met other boys that were his age and had the same dream and bonded with them so they eventually formed a band together that they decided to name “The Lost Boys”

Explanation behind the silly band name: u know the Lost Boys from Peter Pan, well!! They related to that concept, like never wanting to grow up and being all alone without their families in L.A, idk if there’s already a band existing out there with that name if iT DOES PLEASE IGNORE IT LMAO i made it all up at 3am last night

Their genre is indie/alternative (imagine their sound arctic monkeyish like they started being teenagers and really loud but evolved into some type of jazz stuff recently as they grew older and started wearing fancy suits) 

Even though they are not like Green Day or Muse famous they got their big break a while back (like those throwback songs you remember from the mid 00s that were such a classic), and they’re pretty well known around those who enjoy alternative/indie music and he’s toured all over the world with them!! 

So if your character is a musician or has something to do with the music industry/music please assume the connection that they know each other bc he knows a lot of people in the scene omfg 

Concerning his love life, well, since music has always been his biggest priority he’s never had a “real” relationship before like he’s had his girlfriends and stuff (most likely models bc rockstar) but he’s never fallen for someone hard enough to want to settle down and get married u know, the no strings attached relationship type are his fave thing too lmao

Personality wise he’s literally the life of the party!! like you’d never get bored around him, he’s extremely confident because he’s well aware of his talents so he may come off as cocky or vain but he ain’t an asshole LMAO yes he’s a diva that loves the attention but he’s pretty chill and easygoing, he also loves partying and liquor LOL he’s hyper 24/7 tbh

Music History (Part 8): Christianity & Judaism

The Church was the dominant social institution during most of the Middle Ages, so the history of medieval Western music is bound up with it.

Services were mostly sung or intoned, rather than spoken.  Many aspects of Western music (such as notation & polyphony) first developed within church music.  Most schools were part of the Church, and most composers were trained there, as well as those who wrote about music.  Notation was invented for church music, so it is much more well-preserved than other types of medieval music,

Christianity

Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish, and a subject of the Roman Empire.  He told his followers to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19), and thus Christianity spread throughout the Roman world. Paul (c.10 – c.67 AD) and other apostles travelled to the Near East, Greece and Italy to spread the good news, and proclaim Christianity as a religion open to all.

Christianity had a strong sense of community and equality between social classes, and the promise of salvation after death.  This drew many people to it.  Women were attracted to Christianity, and played major roles in the religion's growth.

In Ancient Rome, people could follow whatever religion they liked, as long as they also worshipped the Roman gods & emperors.  But Christians refused to do this.  A religion that was strictly monotheistic, and converted people, was a threat to the empire. Christians were persecuted – they had to gather in secret, and some were martyred.  But the religion still spread, and even gained converts from leading Roman families.

By 313 AD, Christianity was firmly established in most Ancient Roman cities.  This was the year that Emperor Constantine I (who reigned from 310 – 337) issued the Edict of Milan, which legalized Christianity and allowed the Church to own property.  Constantine had converted the previous year.

In 392, Emperor Theodosius I (who reigned from 374 – 395) made Christianity the official religion, and suppressed all other religions except for Judaism.

The Church organized itself on the model of the empire.  They divided into territories called dioceses; and had a hierarchy of local churches, bishops, and archbishops, headed by patriarchs in Rome, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Antioch, and Constantinople.

By 600 AD, nearly all of the area that had once been controlled by Rome was Christian.

Judaism

Christianity came from Judaism.  Some elements of Christian observances reflect these Jewish origins – mainly the practices of chanting Scripture and singing psalms.

In Jerusalem, the Second Temple was constructed between 530 – 517 BC, on the site of the original Temple of Solomon.  Until the Romans destroyed it in 70 AD, it was a place for public worship.

Observances centred around a sacrifice (usually of a lamb).  It was performed by priests, and they were assisted by Levites (members of the priestly class, including musicians).  Lay worshippers watched it.

Priests, and sometimes worshippers, ate some of the offering, depending on the occasion.  These sacrifices were conducted twice a day, with additional services on the Sabbath and on festival days. During the sacrificial ritual, a Levite choir sang the psalms assigned to that day, accompanied by the harp and psaltery.  Trumpets and cymbals were also used.

Synagogues weren't used for worship, but for readings and homilies. Public Scripture readings were probably chanted (this was the case in later centuries) using cantillation (changing of sacred texts) based on melodic formulae that reflected the text's phrase divisions. Each day & each festival had its own readings assigned to it.

Christianity & Judaism

There are some parallels between the Jewish Temple rites and the Christian Mass in later centuries.  The Mass had a symbolic sacrifice (Communion) in which worshippers & priests partake of Christ's blood & body in the form of wine & bread.  In all Christian observances, singing psalms assigned to certain days became a central element.  So did the synagogue practice of gathering at in a meeting-house to hear Scripture readings and public commentary upon them.

But these Christian services arose independently of the Jewish ones, with no direct derivative from the Temple of synagogue.  The Mass, commemorating the Last Supper and thus imitates the Passover meal, is the most immediate link to Jewish practices.

It is not certain whether or not the melodies Christians used for singing psalms & chanting Scripture were drawn from those used in Jewish observances.  None of them were written down until centuries later.

Haikyuu Band AU

So ive been obsessing over this au for a while now and I really wanted to see if I could put it into words and maybe write a fanfic for it? idk because ive never written fanfic before but I think I have some good ideas that could maybe go somewhere. 

So here goes... 

Tsukishima is a singer, sings about drug and sex and is just bad boy all around. He also can play guitar but doesn't do it that often during shows. He has an ex but no one knows who the ex is. So Tsukki has this huge fan base with people that love his music, he puts on huge shows with lots of noise and crazy shit always happen at his concerts. He has so many piercings, so many. He also has lots of tattoos but not like sleeves or anything, maybe lots of geometric shapes and weird poetic stuff. 

Yamaguchi is a model, known for his stunning looks and freckles that are so cute. He models for some makeup companies, does new crazy looks with vogue and covergirl. But he also does some really sexy shoots that people kind of go crazy over. He models suits and hair products and even the occasional underwear photoshoot. He does music videos too, but more about that later. 

Kuroo is Tsukushima's ex. They're friends now, but after the break up Tsukki wrote a whole bunch of lyrics about the messy break up and his producer liked them so he sang the songs and kept his personal life secret, just being friends with Kuroo in public and pretending like he still hates the secret ex to the public. (I'm not sure why they broke up yet but I ship kenkuro so maybe that might come into play).  

I like the idea of Kenma being in Tsukishima’s band and playing keyboard and doing all of the tech/synth stuff. His public persona is pretty much canon, always on his electronics and pretty silent with fans, giving the occasional peace sign and looking out from his long hair for pictures with his supporters. I like to think that when preforming he dyes his hair crazy colors, like whenever he’s on tour he changes it a lot because he gets bored in the hotels and tour bus. His fashion style is really unique and he wears stuff like fishnets and pastel leather jackets that his fans love.

Kuroo is a guitar player, he used to jam with Tsukki in high school and then they started dating, (Bokuto was also in their high school band). The band broke apart when some of them went to college and Tsukishima left for America to play music. Kuroo and him tried to do long distance for awhile, it lasted and was working out, but then Tsukishima started making it big and didn't want to hurt Kuroo by having everything in his life be in the tabloids. So Tsukki broke it off, but Kuroo was so pissed, he didn't want Tsukishima making these decisions for him, he flew out to Los Angeles where Tsukki was living at the time. They had hate sex, and fought for days, in the end Kuroo had to leave and Tsukishima said that he couldn't be with Kuroo because he didn't want to do this long distance, Kuroo agreed. Kuroo didn't want to be dating Tsukishima anymore, they were too different, Tsukki followed his dream to be a musician and Kuroo is in school to be an astrophysicist it wouldn't work. So they broke it off and said that they would still be friends, and they are. (I'm still working on the backstory ok?? I couldn't make Kuroo a bad guy I love his stupid self to much) 

Terushima is also in the band because I'm obsessed with him. He plays the drums and is wilddd. His fans are obsessed with his bad boy vibe and love it when he takes his shirt of during performances (which is every time because hes obnoxious like that) he has just his tongue piercing and drives a motorcycle because I like to believe that he is the baddest boy around. 

Anyway Tsukishima is in Los Angeles making music, doing drugs, going to wild party with other famous people and just living life as one who makes millions does. And his producer says that for his new album he needs to make some music videos with the band. So he has a song (I think I might use one of blackbears songs for lyric reference bc there's no way I'm gonna write lyrics about a shitty ex) (maybe for songs, wish u the best, Idfc, do re mi, gucci linen smthg like that. So while making a story board about the music video he wants to be shown with the person he loves and then shows the fight that ends their relationship and then shows how they both go their separate ways and to different people. All of the band members will appear In the video through shots of them playing their instruments or in other scenes that are relevant to the story.

Yamaguchi is asked about being in the music video because he's gaining a larger fan base. Tsukishimas friend from high school, that goes on tour with the band as their photographer (probably Akaashi), recommends to the band that using Yama in this video could help them get more people into their music. The band agreed and Yamaguchi was asked to be in their video. He says yes.

Tsukki sees Yamaguchi and is floored, he way prettier in person, and also a lot more meek and embarrassing. So they film the music video together but Yamaguchi has to play the role of Tsukishimas sexy ex. Hes portrayed as this playboy, with him going to clubs and dancing, having sex with a whole bunch of random faceless music video dudes. And Tsukki has to watch all of the filming for these scenes (as the writer of the music he HAS to be present for all of the filming). He slowly falls for Yamaguchi and there is lots of pining and being mocked by his friends. 

Yamaguchi really likes the job and learns to enjoy Tsukishimas music, he goes to one of his concerts and practically drools over the way Tsukki provocatively preforms in his all black outfit with practically painted on skinny jeans and a tank top that can barely be called a shirt because it covers absolutely nothing. 

This fic, if I ever write it bc lets be real I probs never will, will probably include background bokuaka, kenkuro, and mayyybe iwaoi if I can find a place for them to be thrown into this shitstorm. Anywho this may never happen but I really like the idea of bad boy Tsukki and Yamaguchi falling hard for him, at the same time Tsukishima falls for Yama. 

In the end they fall for each other and live happily ever after lmao. (I'm working on the ending ok??)

what did you expect by vivevoce is amazing! vivevoce is my babe and I love all of their works and this one is no different. Otayuri AU where Otabek is kind of a fuckboy, does some drugs, gets into some shit, Yuri is his neighbor across the street and also wants to be a dancer. It’s literally just... 30 Day Trans-Challenge except not really bc my memory is too bad for that so you get it all now Little intro and context for new followers and also for me when I look back at this; I'm a 22 year old trans guy from Canada. I've been out since I was 16 and have been on T for 5 years in October. My top surgery is scheduled for 2019 with Dr McLean in Mississauga, Ontario. 1) When did you realize the term transgender referred to you? In grade 10 one of my best friends started transitioning to male. It was my first exposure to anything trans and everything just fell into place after that. I talked to my partner at the time about it a lot and how my identity suddenly started making sense. After around half a year i started going by male pronouns with my friends and I came out publicly a year later. 2) How did you choose your name, and what names were you thinking about using and why? Contrary to popular belief I didn't choose Cooper because of my high school obsession with Alice Cooper. I ripped it off of a cartoon character that had no discernible gender to me. I was also debating going by Kiefer but after some research found out it connects to Cooper like Bob to Robert and just rolled with it. At some point before transition I asked mom what she would have named me if I was born a boy and she said fucking Wayney (dad's name is Wayne) and yeah no I did not want that name at all 3) Have you ever been outed? Quite often. Surprisingly from the people closest to me. My mom and stepdad out me all the time and my best friend/ex gf used to do it a lot too. She stopped thankfully but my mom keeps insisting on making me a discussion topic 4) How did your family take it when you came out/ if you are not out why aren't you? I came out in stages to my family. Mom was first. I fucked up though and forgot I had a stepbrother and basically walked up to her one day and said “you only have a son” and then ran out of the room? She thought I was running away????? Woops. She was kind of ignorant about some stuff for a while but changed a lot of her views pretty quick. She wasn't initially going to let me medically transition before I was 18 but turned around over time and I started t at 17. Stepdad was awkward but supportive. I didn't come out to my dad. My mom had to for me a year after I'd been out to everyone else. I was terrified of rejection bc yay abandonment issues but it went over well! Right after I came out my dad started dating my step mom and she really helped things bc she wasn't afraid to ask the questions that he was too weird about to do himself. She actually administered my tshots for me for a while. Fast forward to last year and suddenly family I hadn't seen for 9 years wanted to get back in contact with me and mom. I was expecting my grandparents and uncle to be really weird about it but they've always been chill. They used to call me a dyke and tell mom she was a failure bc I wore boy clothes when I was a kid so obviously I was worried. 5) Are you active in the trans community or LGBT community? Not nearly as much as I'd like to be. My local active trans community is 80% 40-60 year old trans ladies. Like I love them to bits and I appreciate them sharing their experiences as older queer people but I feel very out of place there. I've been invited to a gay dude cafe meet a few times but am too nervous to go. That being said, my entire friend circle is trans sans a few sprinkled cis people. So I guess we're all just an informal support group lmao 6) Who was the first person you told about being trans? My first partner. She was super queer (was identifying as a bi male at the time we dated) and very understanding and supported me through a lot of the mental gymnastics of realizing I was a dude. 7) Who do you look up to? My friends, honestly. Like I don't know what else to say here lmao 8) How do you deal with being misgendered in the beginning of transitioning by people? Told them politely to only use he/him with me. If they were malicious about it I would try to explain how ignorant that was and if they still didn't get the hint I'd ignore them. 9) What is something positive about being trans? I don't have to hide awkward boners. 10) What are some of your fears in regards to being trans? I'm super afraid of top surgery ending in a result im unhappy with. Like I don't care about the pectoral scarring at all, but I'm worried about proportional problems or dog earring. Basically anything that would require a revision. I'm also super insecure about not having a bio dick. It limits me a lot sexually even with strap ons. No harnesses stay where they need to on me to get anything good happening and my dick always slowly drifts downward. Its frustrating. 11) How do you manage dysphoria? Hahahaahhaa ice cream And usually taking nudes. 12) What are you doing to stay healthy for transitioning mentally and physically? I'm working out every day now. Nothing too intense, but it feels nice. I want to drop about 30-40 pounds before top surgery so am slowly amping up the workouts. Mentally I'm a disaster and am frantically looking for a psychiatrist but can't find any open that have experience with a trans patient. 13) Bathrooms I haven't used a women's bathroom since before I was in testosterone. I'm not anxious about them at all unless there's a lot of drunk dudes or the locks on the stalls don't work. 14) What are some of your passing tips or things you do to pass? Confidence. Fake it till you make it. Being a walking masc alt stereotype got me through high school. 15) How have you embraced your trans identity? Tbh coming out and living life as trans is one of the few times I've been able to do one very important thing consistently: do something for myself no matter what people think. Its something that I've been trying to spread into other aspects of my life. If anything, my trans identity embraced me. 16) What's your rock anthem and why? I think this is the only answer that hasn't changed since last time I did this. I Am, I'm Me from Twisted Sister. 17) What's your binding choice and why? I use a GC2B binder. They're comfy, last long, don't roll, don't have prominent seams, and don't smell funky like my old underworks ones. If I swim publicly or want to slim out my hips for special occasions I wear a full length underworks swim binder. Fun fact: I didn't bind for a year and half bc I gained a fuckwad of weight and my tits passed as moobs. 18) How do you feel about the trans laws where you live? They're getting better. I live in Ontario, Canada so am pretty protected all around. I wish the technical side of transition (name, gender marker) was more streamlined. 19) If you're religious how do your views effect being trans? if you're not religious what about your family religions? I'm in no way religious. My mom had to jump through a bunch of hoops in her head to legitimize my transition through her religion/spirituality. Its a little disturbing to me for details I will not share publicly. 20) Do you want to be a parent? why or why not? I hate children. Keep them away from me. 21) Your views on the cis-gendered community? ??¿¿ they exist. I believe education about trans people and other queer identities should be taught in schools to help cis society not be as blissfully ignorant. I don't believe all cis people hate trans people, but they do have a lot of misconceptions about the community. 22) Do you feel being trans holds you back from your career choice? Fuck no. Honestly I haven't felt nervous about transition affecting my work since my first job. I was just coming out when I worked the museum and was scared they might kick me from the position. Nowadays, I do not disclose my trans status to potential employers until they're hiring me. I thankfully live in a place and time where I'm protected as a trans person in the workplace by the law so haven't felt held back at all. 23) What stereotypes are put on trans people? Undercuts Tbh The stereotypes that stick out to me are the fucking weight ones. Where the fuck are my chunky trans men and ladies at? As a trans guy I am pressured a lot by the representation in the community to aspire to be a buff/cut beefcake or stick thin. Hell, a few of my already very small trans girl friends think they're not as valid bc their bust/waist/hip ratio doesn't make them look like a model. There's literally nothing wrong with being any weight but I find the pressure to be small is even higher within the trans and queer community to fit the stereotype/preconception that we have to be conventionally beautiful to be valid in our identity. 24) Who is your favorite LGBT actor/musician/director/artist etc and why? Uhhhhhhh Tbh I don't even know 25) Doctor visits? I hate them. They make everything about my trans status even if I'm there for something completely unrelated. There is FREE training on trans care for doctors in our part of the province but none seem to opt for it and instead decide its appropriate to ask me transition questions when I'm there for something as unrelated as an impacted nail. 26) Do you feel comfortable answering questions about being trans if say your teacher/friend/stranger asked you? If I'm not paying for their time, if I'm not busy doing something else, and if they are polite, yes. I don't mind answering questions at all! But there's a time and a place and some people just don't understand that. 27) What goals do you have? Lose weight and tone up a bit in time for top surgery. Be aggressively body positive. Continually try to normalize trans bodies. Find a local community to be a part of. 28) What is something you have to do everyday or else you feel like your whole day is off if you don't do it? Shower. If I go out or if people outside of friend circle are near me I have to have my packer and binder. Using the power of music to get better, both mentally and physically, and live well can pay rich dividends, writes Rashmi Ramesh A nine-year-old, who’d never uttered a word all his life, spoke for the first time during a music session. His first word was “open”. Diagnosed with autism, the boy had been non-verbal until then. The development came as a pleasant surprise to Purvaa Sampath—currently India’s only CBMT (Certification Board for Music Therapists)-certified music therapist and neurologic music therapist who was an intern at the time. “With that boy, my supervisor and I had developed a song where he would knock on the drum when we prompted him to. I was leading the session and began the song. When I got to the part about knocking, the song went ‘Who’s that knocking on the door?’ and instead of just knocking on the drum, he looked straight at me and said the word ‘open’. That was the first time he’d ever said a word and it was a huge moment for me, my supervisor, his teacher as well as his family. And this word came after months of music therapy,” Sampath said. Dr Sahil Kohli, consultant (neurology) at Gurugrambased Narayana Super Speciality Hospital, said there's evidence that music has a calming influence on the body and mind, as it produces endorphins — natural painkillers usually produced during a happy state of mind — thus, lowering stress and anxiety, and promoting relaxation by reducing muscle tension. "Young people with anxiety issues can focus better, avoid distraction and negative thoughts, and increase productivity," said Kohli. Music therapy is an intersection between psychology, neuroscience and music to observe how music affects the brain and how various tools in music such as rhythm, pitch, melody and timbre can be used to address clients’ challenges, Sampath said. Music is known to speed up recovery too. "Music therapy promotes consciousness among patients in a coma, especially after a head injury or during metabolic coma. Listening to their favourite music helps in recovering from memory lapses faster and more effectively, even among patients with early memory loss," Kohli said. Education VS Therapy “The end goal of music therapy is a nonmusical one, whereas in music education, the end goal is a musical one,” said Sampath. “For example, if I’m working on playing the piano with a client who has come to me for music therapy with the challenge of fine motor skills, then my end goal for using the piano in the session is for the client to work on their fine motor skills of using their finger. However, if I were teaching someone how to play the piano, the end goal would be for them to learn and reproduce whatever we did on the piano; so the end goal here is a musical skill.” Who is it for? Pandey has suggested music therapy to many of her clients, especially people with anxiety disorders. “Many of them have said that it has helped them calm down. I often use music while doing relaxation training or visual imagery for anxiety, stress and anger issues,” said Pandey. There is no age limit in terms of the benefit that one can get. “The youngest client I’ve worked with was two and the oldest 97. I’ve worked with children and adults on the autism spectrum, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, cerebral palsy, learning difficulties, intellectual and cognitive challenges, Down syndrome, Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s and an entire range of mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, depression, personality disorders and anxiety disorders,” said Sampath. What’s special about it? “Music is one of the few activities that engage both the right and the left hemispheres of your brain. So when you actively participate in music by singing or playing an instrument, multiple areas of your brain are working. Our brains have the ability to create new neural pathways to relearn skills like speech, cognitive abilities and physical abilities. So music is an integral part of getting the brain to create these connections and strengthen them,” Sampath said. While music therapy has a lot of benefits, it must be stressed that it is most effective when used along with psychotherapy and/or medical treatment, Kohli added. Ancient Panacea An established health profession now, music therapy is a concept that was popularised in south India by Carnatic musician M Balamuralikrishna in the 1980s. But this form of therapy has roots going all the way back to 4th century BC, and that’s just in India • Aristotle claims that in some people, the effect of religious melodies that thrill the soul resembles those who have undergone medical treatment and mental catharsis • Thirteenth century Arab hospitals had music rooms to help with healing • Hippocratic tradition laid emphasis on applying natural methods of healing in medical practice, and Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, was said to have played music to treat patients with mental health issues • Ancient Hindus believed that suffering caused by man’s uncontrolled thinking could be handled by music therapy • Swami Haridas, a classical musician who lived in the 16th century, was one of the many who used music to treat illnesses • A 17th century work Sangita Sudha by Nayaka king Raghunatha Nayak and his minister Govinda Dikshitar gives an account of the effects of music on emotions • Ancient works collected by King Sahaji (1684-1711), which have been preserved in the Thanjavur Saraswathi Mahal Library in the form of palm leaf manuscripts, serve as a record of remedial use of music in psychological ailments • Raga Chikitsa was the original Sanskrit treatise that dealt with curative ragas with mood-enhancing characteristics • Regular exposure to a specific raga under particular conditions has been known to have particular effects.
