Get to know me
Thanks to @bittercape for the tag; proud to have been the one to lead you to the Dark Side, hon!
List 3 Ships I Like: I’m not an OTP kind of person, I can enjoy any ship as long as it’s well written. But, that said: I’ve always loved Holmes/Watson, in all incarnations (book-verse, BBC-verse, movies). And the first ship where I followed the fandom online was Gene Hunt/Sam Tyler (Life on Mars). And a newer fave is Ted Lasso/Trent Crimm. (I don’t count Crowley/Aziraphale, as that one is basically canon and, as David Jenkins said, can you really call it shipping if it’s the actual pairing of a romance?)
First Ship Ever: I didn’t think of it as shipping Way Back When, but I remember being very taken/moved by strong emotional bonds between male characters as a kid and teenager. One I definitely remember was Orrie Main [played by Patrick Swayze] and George Hazard in the 1985 TV show North and South.
Last Song I Heard: The Power of Love – Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Had to listen to it after watching the (amazing!) movie All Of Us Strangers last night.
Favourite Childhood Book: Too many to count; I read more or less continually from the age of four until I got online at twenty-one. I started reading LotR at nine and reread it many times; I loved Watership Down and A Wizard of Earthsea and the Moomin books. I also read 1984, A Brave New World and Lord of the Flies when I was 11–12, and they have informed everything I’ve read since.
Currently Reading: Heaven and Hell by Icelandic writer Jón Kalman Stefánsson. And have just started on Crow Road by Iain Banks. (Both are book club books, from two separate reading circles.)
Currently Watching: The newest season of True Detective (love Jodie Foster in it)
Currently Consuming: quince tea
Currently Craving: spring
Tagging: Anyone who would like to do this exercise may consider themselves tagged by me!

I wonder if there is anyone of you out there that still remembers the 1994 mini series north & south : Heaven & hell book 3?
I loved the love story between Charles and Willa.it was just so beautiful...
And the romantic love scenes? Why can't they make beautiful and dreamlike love scenes like these anymore?
And this is when mini series from back in the 90s was still exciting and thrilling to watch.
And i am rewatching this masterpiece of a mini series again after 29 years.
I remember watching this on south African TV back in the 90s. Charles and Willias love story made my heart happy. It was just beautiful that it had left me speechless...
I am rewatching this later tonight cos ...yeah my mom (dammit) is still in my brother's old room with her sore knee and that room is my private space, my safe haven i can say. God i just hope that she will be in that room for this week and not in the next week too?
Man i hope and pray that she's back in her room by next week.
So i will just rewatch north & south book 3 again to not stress myself so much...

Since you made the post, I'm taking you by your word: Could you actually... explain what Mormons ARE? Because to me, as a European who only ever sees em touched upon in TV shows, they're like... some American sub-group of Christians that even other Christians make fun of. But that's kind of it. Never really bothered looking it up before but if you offer answering questions, could you explain them a bit more beyond the tag-line? Doesn't have to be a DEEP dive, just some basic uh pointers on HOW they differ from "regular" Christians?
Definitely!
So Mormons are different in a few ways, and there are different branches. The most widespread is the LDS sect (latter-day saints) and the sect that gets the most scrunity is the FLDS (fundamental latter-day saints) that still practice polygamy. I grew up LDS but only an hour away from an infamous FLDS town called Colorado City.
Unlike a lot of people think, they DO believe in the Bible (both New and Old testament) and use the King James version. However, they also believe in "The Book of Mormon" which is "additional scripture". This scripture is said to be from translated gold plates that founder Joseph Smith found, detailing the beginnings of Christianity in the American continent (mainly south america, but also central and obviously north). It honestly conveys a lot of the same messages from the Bible, since the whole thing is about how Christ visited the americas after his crucifixion. They do have a few other additional scriptures that are much smaller called like "Doctrine and Covenants" that come from the belief that there are still living prophets who prophesy today.
Their main differences are these;
Tumblr media
As listed above, they don't believe in a binary heaven/hell.
Tumblr media
3. If you get to the Celestial Kingdom which is Heaven plus, you'll be able to go and create your own planet/universe
4. They famously have a code where they can only wear modest clothing, can't drink hot caffeinated beverages or alcohol, can't smoke, swear, etc
5. Their temples
6. Their missionaries being super extra, starting at a 2yr commitment at ahe 18 for men and 19 for women
7. The way they genuinely run an entire us state

There he enrolled in a private academy school specializing in arts, the school used some of L. Ron Hubbard's teachings.[17] Later he was home schooled at the age of 14 due to bullying. In 2004, he learned he was adopted[18] and dropped out of the program when he was 16.[19][20] While a young teenager in Los Angeles, Moore would attend punk gigs in Mexican American neighborhoods in East and South Los Angeles, and later at electro club raves in the downtown's Silver Lake and Echo Park neighborhoods.[21][22]

After some guessing by many of who Jack Ü was, Diplo finally came out to reveal that "Jack Ü ... means Skrillex and Diplo together".[23]
2004–2007: From First to Last
Sonny Moore in 2008 In 2004, Moore contacted Matt Good of From First to Last about playing guitar for the band on their debut album. After flying out to Georgia, Moore was heard singing by three studio producers, Derrick Thomas, Eric Dale, and McHale Butler, and was then made lead singer, with Good playing guitar. In June 2004, Epitaph Records released the band's first full-length record with their new bandmate, Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count. After performing on several successful tours, two being the Vans Warped Tour and Dead by Dawn tour, they began recording their second album, Heroine with producer Ross Robinson. The album was released in March 2006 on Epitaph. With high record sales once again, the band found themselves part of many successful tours, until Moore started suffering vocal problems, causing the band to resign from several tours. After going through a successful vocal surgical procedure, Moore informed the band he would be permanently resigning to work on a solo career. FFTL's last show performed with Moore was in their hometown of Orlando at The House of Blues while touring with Atreyu.
Moore announced he had left From First to Last to pursue a solo career. He then launched a Myspace page displaying three demos ("Signal", "Equinox", and "Glow Worm"). This led to Moore's first performance since his leaving From First to Last. On April 7, 2007, alongside harpist Carol Robbins, Moore played several original songs at a local art building. After months of releasing demos via Myspace, Moore played on the Team Sleep Tour with a full band. The tour also featured supporting acts Monster in the Machine and Strata. Moore made several demo CDs available on this tour, limited to about 30 per show. These CDs were tour exclusive and were packaged in "baby blue envelopes", each with a unique drawing by Moore or bandmate.[24]
2008–2013: Solo career and extended plays
Skrillex in 2012 In February 2008, Alternative Press Magazine announced the second annual AP Tour, with All Time Low, The Rocket Summer, The Matches, and Forever the Sickest Kids, as well as Sonny Moore. The tour started in Houston, Texas on March 14 and went through North America, ending in Cleveland, Ohio on May 2, with the majority of the shows being sold out. All bands playing the tour would be featured on the cover of Alternative Press Magazine's annual 100 Bands You Need to Know special, and would be interviewed on the Alternative Press Podcast. During this tour, Moore's line-up consisted of Sean Friday on drums, Christopher Null on guitar, and Aaron Rothe on keyboards. On April 7, 2009, he released Gypsyhook, a digital EP, which featured three songs and four remixes. Also included was "海水" ("Kaisui"), a Japanese version of "Mora". Physical copies of the EP were available at his shows. After going on tour with Innerpartysystem and Paper Route and opening for Chiodos on their European tour, Moore performed at Bamboozle on May 2. He performed on Bamboozle Left's Saints and Sinners stage on April 4. He toured with Hollywood Undead in April 2009 performing under the band name Sonny and the Blood Monkeys, with Chris Null (electric guitar), Sean Friday (drums, percussion, and beats) and Aaron Rothe (keyboards, synthesizers, programming, and turntables). Moore has stated that the album Bells will not be released.[25]
In 2008, Moore began producing and performing under the alias Skrillex at clubs in the Los Angeles area.[26] The name, according to Moore, has no meaning and was "a stupid old online AOL screen name".[27] Previously, he had been known on the Internet as Twipz.[28] On June 7, 2010, Moore released his official Skrillex debut EP, My Name Is Skrillex as a free download.[29] Moore provided programming and vocals for UK metalcore band Bring Me the Horizon on their third studio album, There Is a Hell Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is a Heaven Let's Keep It a Secret.[30] Later in the year, Sonny began a nationwide tour with deadmau5 after being signed to mau5trap recordings and released his second EP, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.

Skrillex released a music video for "Rock n' Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain)" on his official YouTube page on June 20, 2011.[33] On August 17, 2011 Skrillex announced his label, OWSLA.[34]
Skrillex performing live at the 2011 Ottawa Bluesfest "The label's first releases will come from Bristol-based dubstep producers KOAN Sound, electro-house newcomer Porter Robinson from North Carolina, singer-songwriter Alvin Risk, and San Francisco-based M Machine (formally Metropolis)."[35] Skrillex released a music video for "First of the Year (Equinox)" via Spin.com on August 19, 2011. The video for Skrillex's song "First of the Year (Equinox)" appears on the first episode of the Beavis and Butt-head revival.
On November 8, Skrillex stated that he intended to release an album, Voltage. Skrillex gave fans more info about Voltage in RockSound Magazine after a photoshoot for the cover and doing an extensive interview on his tour.[36] For unknown reasons, however, the album was never released, however on December 21, 2011, Skrillex unveiled the Bangarang EP for a Beatport release on December 23, then on August 12, 2012, his new side-project formed with Boys Noize called Dog Blood released an EP called Next Order/Middle Finger. Book Description:
With the death of Lucifer, Queen Lucinda assumes control of Hell, ordering her soldiers to prepare for a doomsday war with Heaven. Craving eternal power, she devours the souls of gifted demonic beings, acquiring their abilities to destroy her perceived political enemies.
Meanwhile, the Black Crows meet with the Knights of Darkness in their hidden headquarters, plotting against Lucinda in their efforts to maintain peace and the balance of power. Consumed by hatred over Crighton Daemonium's unrequited love, Lucinda is unaware of the secret conspiracy brewing, or that Lucifer's spirit has returned to Hell inside the body of a soul–trapped demon.
Reclaiming his throne, Lucifer punishes his daughter for her act of treason. However, his obsession with Samara, Crighton's beautiful daughter, leaves him incapable of controlling his stolen body. After forcing her into submission, he names Samara the new Queen of Hell yet continues his authoritarian rule. When an insurgency breaks out on Earth, he becomes distracted long enough for her to be kidnapped by Nexus rebel forces, believing her to be the prophesied savior of their planet.
Is Samara the Phoenix, destined to destroy Lucifer? Or is she his soulmate and the true Queen of Hell?

Reviews
"Annihilation, the sequel to Kaylin McFarren's award-winning Soul Seeker, is a decidedly Shakespearean thriller. Amidst the supernatural world, the novel is essentially a classic story about love, betrayal and power between and among royal families. McFarren's blatantly "human" portrayal of Samara Daemonium's youthful obsessions set her up to be both victim, royal and a star in a wholly compelling coming-of-age story. To get this most out of Annihilation, readers are highly encouraged to read Soul Seeker first." -- Bella G. Wright, BestThrillers.com
"Get ready for the steaming, twisted plot of Kaylin McFarren's Book 2 in the Gehenna series - Annihilation—where nothing is as it seems, and enemies are closer than anyone may think. Recommended!" - Chanticleer Reviews
"Simply couldn't put this book down, even when every hair on my neck was raised. It's that good!" -- Angela Fox, Publisher, Clackamas Review/Oregon City News
"This story is dark and decadent, and fans of such fare should find it largely entertaining." -- Blue Ink Reviews
"Hell has a new ruler, Queen Lucinda. A thrilling venture into the depths of Hell offers unrelenting intrigue and fearsome characters, including timeless stories of love, friendship, sacrifice, and identity... plot twisting toward an epic battle." - RECOMMENDED, The US Review of Books
"Annihilation is truly absorbing, shocking at times, and virtually impossible to put down!" - Theodocia McLean, Book Marketing Global Network
"Left on a cliffhanger and ready for the next book in this fiery series, Annihilation is an intense, dramatic power struggle and like a jigsaw puzzle, lots of different pieces hide the bigger picture until the end. We are happy to add this book to the Indie Books We Love section of the LoveReading website." - Charlotte Walker, Love Reading
Excerpt: Chapter One - Annihilation by Kaylin McFarren
Two regiments of ram-horned, cloven-hoofed demons marched through the blazing corridors of Hell in preparation for the Red War against Heaven. Their stomping feet and thumping spears shook dust loose in the solid rock tunnels leading to twenty massive cellblocks, each identified by their cardinal direction: north, south, east, and west. Confined in one of the cells on the lowest level was Hecate, the Woodland Goddess and Queen Lucinda's loyal friend. Within a month of assuming control of Hell, word had reached her that Lucinda's new regime was responsible for numerous beheadings, boiling demons to death, and implementing monstrous atrocities against woodland creatures and outspoken opponents within her own council.
Believing their friendship would make a difference, Hecate arranged a meeting with Lucinda two weeks earlier and pleaded with her to abstain from cruel acts against mankind. "Think of your legacy...the positive impact you could make." The briskness she put into her voice was belied by the unshed tears glistening in her eyes. She shifted her position in the high-back chair and drew a deep breath. "Lucifer was brutal throughout his rein...up until the day he died. You've always made brilliant choices, Samara. I know that better than anyone. Lucifer made the worst decision of his life by sending Crighton to England, and only the Sovereign Sector is responsible for the consequences that followed. I'm just grateful that Lucifer didn't survive after that nasty battle with his brother, Castiel. If he had, who knows what would have happened?"
The Queen rested her chin on her fisted hands. "Indeed. But you need to remember that my name is now Lucinda. I changed it after meeting with the Knights of Darkness and taking control of Hell."
"Yes, of course. I'll never forget the day before that happened. I was in the old arena when Crighton's mother stabbed your father repeatedly," Hecate said somberly. "I understand she was welcomed into Heaven along with her soulmate, though I don't understand why..." She let her voice trail off, shaking her head. "I guess we should thank them for your justly-deserved position."
"I already have...thanked Crighton, I mean. I offered him a more substantial token of my gratitude as well, but he turned it down."
"Politely, I hope?"
"I was afraid to sit on the throne," she admitted. "That's why I waited so long to make changes. Tyrus helped Crighton escape from Hell, and Lilith played a large part in saving Ariel. But I was responsible for saving them all by agreeing to take my father's place."
"True enough, Lucinda." Hecate felt her eyes burn once more. She drew another deep breath before adding, "I'm sure your generosity will never be forgotten and will be celebrated for years to come."
"Since I managed to keep them alive, I suppose it's time for the three of us to assume our rightful responsibilities."
"Three of us?"
"That's right. Crighton, Tyrus and myself. We have a lot of unfinished business to resolve."
"Of course, Your Majesty." Hecate smiled at her, believing she was making progress.
"But first," Lucinda said, "I'd like to discuss your view on the way Tyrus' allies are likely to respond to our meeting. Especially with them opposing me at every turn. Then I'd like your personal impression on how the loyalists in my council will interpret your views on diplomacy in the woodlands. After that, there are a couple of treasury issues I promised to investigate. It's past time that my advisors and I established a tax structure and common currency. And now that we have the Imperial chambers remodeled and relaxed rules in place regarding horns, tails, and bat wings, we can start thinking about other things like enforcing appropriate punishment where it's due."
"Since you brought it up, don't you think it's a bit extreme...the way punishment is being handled? I thought you wanted to be a just ruler...the exact opposite of your father. If that's true, then why are you taking extreme measures with outcasts, human souls, and defenseless creatures? They would sing your praises if you allowed them to– "
"–run rampant and refuse to obey my laws?" Lucinda growled. She stood up with her eyes blazing red hot and her thin lips frowning. "So, that's why you're here. Not to support me but to oppose me like the rest of the ingrates in my kingdom. Leave and never come back here again! Your deception will not be forgiven or forgotten. Is that understood? I want you out of here...NOW!!" she screamed.

About the Author:
Kaylin McFarren has received more than 60 national literary awards, in addition to a prestigious RWA Golden Heart Award nomination for FLAHERTY'S CROSSING - a book she and her oldest daughter, New York Times/USA Today best-selling author Kristina McMorris, co-wrote in 2008. Prior to embarking on her writing journey and developing the popular THREADS psychological thriller series, she poured her passion for creativity into her work as the director of a fine art gallery in the Pearl District in Portland, Oregon; she also served as a governor-appointed member of the Oregon Arts Commission.
Her award-winning time-travel adventure, HIGH FLYING, asks challenging questions that will linger long after the final twists are revealed. Jumping to the supernatural-horror genre, Kaylin's clever GEHENNA series leads readers into the pit of Hell, through the mechanisms of secret societies, and across the Earth’s crust, ever raising the stakes for her leading duo—a wicked demon and guardian angel presented with shocking revelations.
With each story she writes, this author delivers unexpected twists and turns and keeps her readers on the edge of their seats, leaving them guessing and thoroughly entertained. When she's not traveling or spoiling her two pups and three grandsons, Kaylin enjoys giving back to her community through participation and support of various charitable, medical and educational organizations in the Pacific Northwest, and divides her time between her homes in Portland, Oregon and San Diego, California.
FUN TIDBITS
Kaylin is proud of the fact that her great aunt Bessie B. Cordell, an evangelistic missionary during WWII, was instrumental in opening an orphanage in Tientsin, China and also wrote two published novels, Precious Pearl and Blossoms of the Flowery Kingdom, documenting her dangerous, harrowing experiences.
She keeps a glass of wine close by while writing love scenes, Kleenex on her desk while writing heart breakers, and has been known to empty a box of chocolates when she's completely stumped.
A consummate "pantser" and perfectionist, she writes and edits as she goes, and uses photographs of models and actors from tabloid magazines to visualize her characters.
She loves her husband of 48 years dearly. However, if Josh Holloway, Hugh Jackman or Ian Somerhalder came knockin', well... their marriage just might be put to the test.

Disney Movies List
Ok first of all I want to make clear that english is not my first language. I therefore apologize in advance for any grammar or spelling mistakes. Please don't be too strict with me =D
I recently bought Disney+ and I plan now to watch and review every movie, Disney has ever produced or participated in it. And I tell you, this will be a hell of a trip, because my list now contains no fewer than 701 movies. That means if I watch at least one movie every day, it will take me about 2 years to see all of them. And since I will most likely not watch a movie every day, I will definitely need at least twice as long....
For the films on my list, which I marked with a cross at the end, it means that I have seen them already. However, since I last saw most of these movies in my childhood or teenage years (so at least 15 years ago), it will be interesting for me to rewatch them after such a long time. I have probably already forgotten most of the plots.
I also plan to watch them in chronological order and rank them. The movies that I don't find on Disney+ I will watch somewhere else.
Here is the list: (The films follow the chronological order in which they were published. However, it is quite possible that I accidentally swapped a few. But I think most of it is accurate).

Transmigrator Pile-up Pt 3
In which I cheerfully abuse my protagonist, because that’s what he’s there for.
TW: Animal death.  We’re sad about it, too.  Also cheerful abuse of the Chinese name generator because Author Don’t Care and I can’t do this on my own.
The clue, when it came, was not subtle.  It was, in fact, written in characters that had to be several miles high.  At least.
"What the FUCK is that?!"
He couldn't help it if he was loud, that was entirely involuntary!  There was only a sliver of the moon visible; one eighth waxing or so.  That wasn't what floored him.  No, the moon had apparently gotten a new special effects budget because glowing lines of red stretched across the darkened surface like someone had taken a giant calligraphy brush and sketched characters across the surface of the Earth's only natural satellite.  Well.  That was more or less what they did.  Projected by talismans, sorta, and he still really hated that whole bullshit mission because what the fuck was up with putting an array on the moon.
Oh fuck, he knew what that was.
Dimly, he also registered that oh, look, there was more than one natural satellite now: a few chunks of rock glimmered faintly red and malevolent in the night sky aaaaaaaaaaand as he turned to what had to be the south, yes, there was a sparkling belt of shimmering gray like a cloud obscuring the stars in a wide swath that followed the equator.
If he went far enough north, he could probably see the new northern lights and the walls of the post-apocalypse's most exclusive gated community.  He kinda wanted to hate them for existing.
Outside the Array. Mountains.  Eagle.  Fast healing.  Had to be beast tribe.  OG was with the bandits, then.  OG was a big dude with a lot of scars and red swirling tattoos and fuuuuuuuuck he landed in the Mountain King Feng Mahti, didn't he?
Oh fuck fuck fuck that meant the eagle was Taifun.  He'd killed the Mountain King's bird.  All Taifun had been trying to do was protect him.  His breath hitched and stopped in his chest.  Not fair.
Grandma Xu shuffled out of the house, cautious and curious as to what had him yelling in the night on the way back from the outhouse.  Because plumbing happened to other people.  She gently touched his shoulder, and he realized he must have sat down. "Hielang-ge?"
"Here." His voice came out choked, and he swallowed before saying lamely, "I'm just. . . having a moment here." Jay finally tore his eyes away from the goddamn horror show overhead and leaned forward, rubbing a hand across his face.  Yeah, not at all subtle.  Shit.
Jay Cooper was jaegering fucking Feng Mahti falling on his ass in a farmer's field crying his eyes out because the first goddamn thing he did was get Taifun killed and if he ever ran into the Gardens they'd probably try and kill him before he said a word, especially with the hate-on the Lettuces had for Feng-zong for some pretty good reasons.  Like traumatically killing the best character in the entire series Sect Leader Lin.
Transmigration stories were supposed to be about redeeming and improving the original.  Who let him fuck up this badly?
He sorta . . . blue screened for awhile there.
He came back around to Grandma Xu gently patting his scarred cheek, then hauling on his arm.  "Come back in, Hielang-ge.  It is not safe to stay outside at night."
The fact that this little old granny farmer was poking and manhandling the bandit with biceps the size of her head made him want to giggle hysterically.  Did they know?  Did they know who he was?  Before he did, no less?
Big bad bandit king obediently got up and followed Grandma Xu back inside to the fire at the hearth and where the family was winding down for the evening, Xu Ming nursing little Yan while listening to A-Mei babble enthusiastically about something.  Xu Jing looked a little startled at whatever he saw on Jay's face and only settled when Grandma gently pushed him back down into his seat.  "It is nothing, just star-gazing."
It was the first clear night since he'd been able to get back vertical. Literally the first time he'd gotten outside after dark.  And there you have it, bam, he was right in the Arrays of Heaven universe. Welcome to whatever was after the end of the world.
The way Xu Jing cut a glance across at him, he definitely knew more than he was saying.  Shit, they were braver than he was, picking the Mountain King off the floor and trying to get him back upright.  He owed them a solid.  Several of them.  Maybe in gold.  If he had any. . . . He hadn't asked to see or go through the things they'd found with him.
It had seemed like a bad idea to make a fuss over asking for "his" things back while he was still in their care.  If they wanted to keep something, what the hell, it wasn't like he was going to know.  They were welcome to it.
So he didn't need Feng Mahti's personal effects, like a stranger collecting someone else's things on his way out of prison.  But there was something he had to do that he really didn't want to, and the sooner the better.
Xu Jing tried to evade, but Jay was used to literally and metaphorically herding cats and large birds of prey.  Uh.  What used to count as large birds of prey.  Anyways.  He sat down across from him and caught the man's eyes, trying to project calm and implacable.   "I'd been meaning to ask, now that I can get around again. . .  You know where I went down?"
"I didn't. . . I haven't looked."
Jay breathed in, then out. No one had a minor breakdown tonight, no sir. Totally stable. "But you could take me there."
"To the area, yes," Xu Jing hedged before looking up at Jay with misgivings, brows furrowed, "Are you sure?  It might be dangerous."
Someone shot Feng Mahti out of the sky with the low-tech equivalent of a surface-to-air missile in what was probably an ambush.  Yeah, that sorta went without saying.  "I need to see it."
Xu Jing nodded slowly.  "Tomorrow morning, then."
After the morning chores, before the sun had really properly come up to peek over the rise of the mountain ridges, Xu Jing and Jay headed out.  It felt almost weird to be wearing Feng Mahti's proper clothes, even if it wasn't everything.  The boots fit.  It took him a minute to figure out how to lash the sleeves of his underrobe under the bracers, Grandpa Xu's worn overrobe loose on top.  At least the colors didn't stand out; Feng Mahti had favored rusts, browns and darker reds that faded into the forest, if it a bit dark for spring.
Xu Jing's brown and grey were equally surreptitious, and the man handled himself like he was used to hiking, striking out along the stony ridge downhill.  Jay trailed after at a sociable distance, watching out for loose rocks underfoot.  "You come out into the woods often?  Doesn't look like there's any paths."
"Not this way.  There's a village, little trading post, about half a day's walk over there.  That's where I met Xiao Min."  Xu Jing gestured with his walking stick to the east, back away over his shoulder.  "Never a reason to go southwest."
The small glacier lake they'd mentioned was more to the north.  Xu Jing said the bandits watered their birds there. . .  maybe someone had waited for just that.  Stake out the watering hole.  Bastards.
The hike was mostly quiet.  It had the same feeling as going on an S&R where you knew it was a retrieval.  Jay didn't remember any of the woods, just trusted Xu Jing knew where he was headed.  It'd been a week, and it had rained more than once.  Any trail he'd left behind would need a dog to find, now.
After the first hour coming down from the mountain valley, the rest of the morning turned into a long, steady climb uphill.  He must have stumbled his way down.  If any of that was under his own power, anyways.   Xu Jing had been too polite to mention if he'd rolled the entire way down the goddamn mountain.
Finally, they crested a ridge and turned, and Jay caught his breath hard, freezing mid-step.
That was the sharp little valley that Taifun had banked into, little more than a cleft in a much larger mountain.  And halfway down the opposite ridge. . . yes.  Trees were broken and strewn aside in a line where a bird the size of a small airplane had made its final short, sharp stop.
He pushed past Xu Jing, already calculating the fastest route.  He dropped off the rock ledge they had been following up, between trees; at this elevation, it was mostly confiers and some adventurous brush that was just barely leafing out for the season.  Dark green, pale shoots, white flowers, a tumble of those brown-red rocks like gravel across the bottom of the cut.
He had to go slower through the splinters, finding it easier to route parallel to the path of destruction and then move uphill to. . . to where Taifun fell.
Jay let out his breath in a slow hiss, then regretted the indrawn breath that followed.  Death always smelt like death.  The vultures and other carrion feeders had been doing their job, and the results were never pretty.  One of the wings had been snapped and strewn aside, more a crumple of feathers and bone than anything else.  The other was folded under, and the sheer jumble of flesh and bones was barely recognizable as a bird.
Jay stepped wide around it, seeing but not seeing until his eyes finally caught on a sharply curving shape.  The beak.  He crouched, pressing one hand, then the other flat against it.  It was warmer on one side that caught the sun.  There, with his hands cradling the immense beak, his heart just dropped.
Fuck. It was worse than seeing the sad wreckage of animals alongside the road.  Senseless death of things in the wrong place at the wrong time, where their only flaw was getting in the way of humans.  This probably wiped out his kharma from never having hit so much as a chipmunk himself.  Taifun was dead because of him.  No doubts about that.  Taifun would have lived until the desert.  Until the oasis where Feng Mahti, desperate and betrayed, drank the poisoned waters to follow him down while Lin-laozi watched.
He hated that part of the books.  Read it once. Might have had to scream into his pillow in outrage. Lin-laozi had just . . . walked away from the corpses of the bandit king and his bird, left the well dripping with black malice and resentment in a complete 180 of his beliefs and that  . .  Jay honestly tried to forget the whole scene was canon because that was some utter grimdark bullshit.
Taifun deserved better.  Deserved better than taking the hit for his idiot ass, better than that horrible bitter end in the sands.  Lin-laozi would never have done that.
At least, if Feng Mahti was here now, they hadn't tried to cross the Wastes into the Empire yet.  Maybe Jay could keep the bandits out of that whole shitheap of a plot twist.  Save something.
He rested his forehead against the cool feathers of the flat forehead, eyes closed.  He wasn't really the religious type, wouldn't know who or what to pray to at home much less . . . on the road, whatever that meant for his spiritual existence anyways, but he hoped that wherever Taifun was, the bird heard.
"I was your end instead of your second chance.  I might not even be Feng Mahti's second chance.  But I can at least try and make some of this better."

Happy 2019, which I rang in with some fantasy and scifi
Gods So, anyway, here is what I have been reading lately
OLD SCHOOL FANTASY
You either love the 80s/90s stuff or find it old-fashioned enough to set your teeth on edge. Luckily, I am in the former camp.
Melanie Rawn, the Dragon Prince - first in her trilogy, this is part fantasy novel (dragons! politics! magic!) and part a delicious bodice ripper romance (true love! mind wipes! ripping of clothes!) You either love that stuff or you don’t. Like a lot of old-school fantasy, it tends not to have too many shades of grey characters, but sometimes you just want the hunky prince Rohan and beautiful magician Sioned to be gorgeous and noble and heroic and sexy and ripping each other’s clothes off.
PS. I got it for the cover. Do me, Rohan!
Tumblr media
I am certainly getting the second book in the series.
PPS. Trigger warning for sexual assault of both hero and the chief female villain. It’s a VERY 80s book.
Jennifer Roberson, Tiger and Del series - I love this!!! I tried and failed to get into her Chronicles of the Cheysuli, but Tiger and Del is great great stuff. (Also, if you are looking for POC protagonists, look no further than Tiger.) Tiger is a great sword dancer from the south, Del is a sword master from the North. Together they overcome traumas, defeat enemies and their pasts, and save the world occasionally. Oh, and fall in love. This is a wonderful, wonderful series from beginning to end, with two such complex and complicated protagonists (and how awesome that Del is often emotionally unavailable, vengeance driven, scarred and yet viewed as loved and loving. And Tiger is just amazing.)
Judith Tarr, Spear of Heaven (Avaryan Respendent) - This is the second book in the second trilogy in Tarr’s interconnected six book series (first trilogy is Avaryan Rising and takes place long before the second.) First off - Rising made me insane. I loved the first book, but the last book made me rage because Tarr wanted me to root for characters I wanted to murder and view as bad or misguided the characters I came to love. It was a bold gamble, but it failed. Still, I love Tarr’s prose (it often reads like poetry), I often love the characters she creates, and while the plot is hard to explain (it deals with the royal family and its use of magic, and worldgates that allow interplace travel failing, is the closest I can come to it), it’s so well-written, I don’t even care. Also, POC protagonists galore. And romance.
Kate Elliott, King’s Dragon (Crown of Stars) - The first book in the seven book series. I’ve posted about it recently, so I won’t do too much, but it’s gorgeously written and well thought out and I am in love with slowly discovering her sorcery power and recovering from trauma Liath and illegitimate son of King and commander of his troops, intense as hell Sanglant. HOWEVER OMG I MUST PROTEST because at the end of book 1, Sanglant is captured by that world’s version of Vikings and is now a slave of their chief magician who has put an iron collar and chains on him and made him one of his killer dog pack and by that i mean LITERALLY THREW HIM AMONG HIS DOGS TO SEE HOW LONG HE CAN FIGHT THEM OFF AND KEEP THEM IN CHECK AND BE TREATED AS SUBHUMAN AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MY FAVORITE CHARACTER OMG AND SANGLANT IS ALL YOU CAN’T BREAK ME BECAUSE MY HEART IS WITH ANOTHER AND NOT WITH ME MEANING LIATH AND I NEED TO STOP.
YA FANTASY
I am a sucker for YA fantasy even if I am much too old to be the intended audience.
Mindee Arnett, Onyx and Ivory - our heroine used to be a noblewoman, but when her father tried to attack the King, she left and is now running messages in the desert. However, scary dragons are now appearing in the day, her first true love Prince Corwin has reappeared, and she may or may not be in danger due to her hidden magic. This is lovely and smart and well-written and it’s such a rarity to have two good, highly competent protagonists who act even while they angst.
ROMANTIC SCIFI
This section should just be entitled “where were Rachel Bach and Sara Creasy my whole life”
Rachel Bach, Paradox Series - this trilogy is everything you ever wanted and never were gonna get - tough as hell heroine, a deliciously intense and angsty romance, Universe saving, conspiracies, mystic stuff, alien beings. Basically go read it and then wave your Devi x Rupert flag with me. Short summary is mercenary Devi really wants to become one of King’s elite guards, and to do so signs up with a trader named Caldwell, whose ship mysteriously gets attacked super often and short stint with whom often leads to guard positions due to extra combat experience. She quickly begins to discover everything is not what it seems. Oh, and the ship’s cook Rupert is surprisingly hot and surprisingly good with a gun.
Sara Creasy, Song of Scarabaeus/Children of Scarabaeus duology - OK, this is mega smart (don’t read when tired) and twisty twisty twisty, but I confess that I was mainly in it because of Edie, a genius bio tech, coerced into helping with something Universe-changing, and Finn, a slave with a muting collar (for being on the wrong side of a rebellion), who is made her bodyguard because a chip will kill him if he is far away from her. This set up has my name on it OH YES. I loved Edie’s emotional integrity as much as I loved Finn’s endurance and the whole duology is AWESOME and EMOTIONAL and BRAINY at once.
BRING OUT YOUR GUNS
I happen to like military fantasy some time, and both Wexler and McClellan are long-time favorites.
Django Wexler, The Price of Valour - this is book 3 in The Shadow Campaigns five book series, which combines magic and 18th century France in a way. If you are looking for lesbian protagonists, this is a book for you, since one of our three narrators is Winter - Colonel in the army of that Universe’s version of Napoleon (only better as a person). The other two are another colonel - Marcus d’Ivoire and the ruling queen - Raesinia. The equivalent of French revolution is eating everyone alive in this installment, Winter is fighting in the war and trying to keep her relationship with first love Jane going, Marcus gets drawn in to help Raesinia save the city, Raesinia copes with not being able to ever die and being hunted by Priests of the Black (and I ship Marcus x Raes btw), and the whole thing is, as usual, awesome.
Brian McClellan, Wrath of Empire - second in his Gods of Blood and Power series. I don’t love it as much as I do his Power Mage trilogy (I miss Tamas, who held that series together, and don’t feel as invested in the characters from the previous trilogy who appear here as much as I did there - Taniel is a good example) but it’s still solid and fun and Bill Sykes is a force of nature and Bo and Nila are back and Ka Poel is a lost Dynize Princess and I still ship her and Taniel in a terrified “don’t kill me” way so all is good.
NEWBIE BUT GOODIE
S.G. Prince, Elvish - this is the author’s first book and the first in a series and I want more yesterday! Elves and magic and war and love and loss and gorgeous prose and OMG I SHIP THE MAIN COUPLE TO DISTRACTION.
