Grey has never been one to ask many questions. There's a personal philosophy to their internal code of conduct: never ask more questions than the amount you're confident you're permitted.

Still, certain things push the limits.

He knows Reyn's line of work is dangerous. Any first-responder job is filled with constant risk. And even then, Reyn has never been one he's been able to keep track of. Grey is in her own little corner of the world, and within, he tends to stay.

Reyn tends to be the one who roams.

Again, not something Grey can ask many questions about, despite the odd injuries Reyn will attain with startling frequency. And yet still, her confusion and malaise have been building, like there's something behind some sort of facade. Reyn holds a field between themself and Grey's awareness of them, only letting her peer through a window. It's been building for a while now—her curiosity leading her closer against the glass.

¹ — the iori bloodline dates back to the sengoku period . utahime's ancestor , sato runa , married a man by the name haruto iori , giving her the surname iori , which means ' hermitage , retreat , or hut ' . however, the name can be traced to a noble family in central japan .

² — originally , they were based in dazaifu , which acted as an administrative center for the entire island of kyushu for over 500 years BEFORE THE SENGOKU PERIOD . eventually the administrative center was moved to hakata and the need for diplomats ceased . however ! there was a need for order within jujutsu society, leading to one of the burnt down building to be rebuilt and used for diplomats of a different kind. not only did these jujutsu meetings go on here , but at times the regular government joined for meetings. therefore, a majority of the iori at this time was made up of important figures , dealing with negotiations betweens the states or clans and that's what they became known for.

³ — as the iori clan grew , more of their supportive techniques manifested and they became infamous for them. ( including solo forbidden area ) well known for their support both with jujutsu sorcerers but also within the government. the iori clan helped with deals and negotiations between conflicting areas / clans for years . clan members act as mediators for the meetings between clans. the iori clan hosts the clan members in their compound, making up rooms for the members and showing the upmost hospitality to them.

⁴ — in 1945, with the conflicts coming to a head and many simply not knowing what was going to happen next , the iori clan split. the head of the clan stayed in dazaifu, while a majority of the clan moved more inland, landing in kawagoe. which is where they reside now. the clan has grown , with more members than before. however, the clan is still split, but they still follow the same rules, and follow the same systems -- both clans still work primarily with negotiation when they're needed, as they're not as needed or frequent as during ancient times. the woman are still primarily shrine maidens and even specialize in the sealing of cursed objects and weapons

⁵ — now , let's talk about utahime . utahime is not heir to the title head , however , she is an important figure within the clan. as an inheritor of solo forbidden area , she is considered a descendant of ame - no - uzume , who is the most important deity to the clan itself. most of their traditions have ties back to the goddess . it has always been that way and thus, utahime acts as the face of the iori clan. she has to make public appearances and attend festivals and other culturally important events , as well as leading the clan in their own traditions. most of the women of the clan are mikos, shrine maidens who attend to the shrine of their goddess. utahime was one of them, and dressed accordingly until she reached the age 22 . since she is seen as the face of the clan and an important figurehead, she graduates from the kosode and hakama pants , instead wearing something more like this, that sets her apart and signifies her difference . all that being said, while utahime has no real authority within the clan, the head does value her opinion and occasionally will ask it.

sidenote : utahime does still wear her miko attire at times , and she does not soley wear the traditional outfit that is pushed on her. she has her freedom with clothing when she's not responsible for appearing. she often opts to wear the miko attire on assignments if only for the ease of movement.
