Petition Against Raising the Income Requirement for Family Visas in the UK to £38,700 (Only Sign if You are a UK Resident)

So among the other awful things the Tories are doing to this country, they have decided to raise the minimum annual salary requirement for a UK citizen to bring their foreign spouse to the UK from £18,600 to £38,700 from next April. They have more than DOUBLED IT.

This is incredibly fucking stupid for an number of reasons, chief of which is that the median salary across all British jobs is £35,000 if you are a white man, and even worse if you are not that.

On a personal note, this does affect me as an American living in the UK with my British spouse. Luckily, since I changed jobs in October, we JUST BARELY clear this income requirement - and if I hadn't done that, I would be frantically searching for a new job anways. And we have to hope that our situation does not drastically change before I apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain next September.

Here's the thing: I am INCREDIBLY LUCKY. It's also took me five years to get to this point, including over a year working remotely for my parents' business because no UK company would hire me for 'reasons' (my fave being that I didn't sound sophisticated enough. lol.) I'm thinking of so many of my friends right now who suddently have to come up with another £20,000 in the next six months, which is absolutely insane. I'm thinking of my friends who have just had children and are counting on their parter's income to support them during this time who cannot afford to do that anymore. I'm thinking of university students who fell in love on a study abroad like myself, and had everything all planned out for their spouse to move here, only for everything to go up in smoke. I'm thinking of everyone who through no fault of their own are working essential jobs that they enjoy that are suddenly not enough. The NHS, which at this point is built on the backs of immigrants, is going to get even worse.

The government is forcing poor people to choose between the UK and their spouse. And these people are going to choose their spouse, because DUH. And people are going to leave. For some people that means moving back to their spouse's country and hoping that country lets them in. But what if they are LGBT and they cannot go back to their spouse's country because queerness is punishable by death? What are they supposed to fucking do?

It is high-key xenophobic to force British people to ignore foreigners and expect them to marry British spouses. And it's even more heinous considering that this new rule does not apply to the rich. Our own bloody PM has a gajillionaire wife who is not a citizen.

I made a video at the start of this year about my feelings being an immigrant in this country, and so many of my points still hold up and are even more true today.

Heck, I just got an autism diagnosis but because I'm not a citizen I cannot get disability benefits because I am not allowed public funds - the SAME PUBLIC FUNDS THAT I PAY FOR THROUGH TAXES ON MY PAYCHECK. And don't even think about protesting, because you can be arrested for 'being a nuisance', whatever that's defined as.

But I'd still rather be here that in the U.S. where health insurance and student loan companies would rob me blind and there's a high chance of getting shot walking down the street.

More and more, merely existing in the UK as a person had the gall not to be born here is one of the most radical things you can do.

And I'm going to continue to do it. And so are the rest of us.

So if you do happen to live in the UK, please sign the petition in the link. If you don't, please consider phoning your country's representatives to ask them to condemn this move. Moth and I and all of the others affected by this new rule are extremely grateful for any support you offer

what are 3 things you’d say shaped you into who you are?

Oooh, tricky question. A lot has helped shape me into who I am, and not all of it has been positive. I think the three biggest influences on my life have got to be:

Bullying: I was bullied a lot in my youth, and it's affected how I see myself and how I hold myself. A lot of my anxiety and self-reliance comes from being bullied, gaslit, and generally traumatised as a kid - there were no real authority figures I could trust, and I got in trouble when I retaliated against my bullies, so I ended up going through life feeling like I couldn't trust or rely on a lot of people. Which brings me to:

Therapy: Let's go for a happier one. I used to have terrible panic attacks at the thought of failing people, or from being in crowds or from trying to make phone calls. It's taken a whole-ass decade and a bunch of different therapies, counselling services, and dudes whose stock response to mental illness is "have you tried weed?" (No and I'm not going to. It's not for me.) but I'm at the point now where I can hold conversations, stand up for myself, and say "no" to the occasional ridiculous request. A lot of that is down to talking things out and finding things out through one-to-one counselling.

My wife: I met @helenmarie95 on this hellsite, and we've been together for a while now. She's been super strong when I've had low moments (like quitting my job bc it was the worst thing for me and then taking a few months to find another) to points where I started questioning my gender and began identifying as non-binary. She's taught me a lot about mental illness, specifically autism and ADHD, and she's been accommodating when I've said stupid shit. And she has shown me some awesome movies and music ^-^

Alright real quick:

Kung Fu Panda 2 (it's the best one! And there's always something new to spot!)

Booksmart (It's fun! It's funny! And I know my wife loves it :3 )

Oblivion (Yes it's kinda generic, but it's an interesting sci-fi premise with a heavyweight cast and some drop-dead gorgeous cinematography, so I feel confident I'd never get bored of it)

12. what’s some good advice you want to share?

So we've kinda covered it already, but: learn how to say no. Also join your union at work. Also if you've got a bad cold, eating four Kinder Bueno bars in a row isn't a good idea.

It'll feel like it's a good idea, but it's not!

Hey - glad to see you back in the writing game! I was wondering with regards to Narnia if you could analyze Susan's character arc a bit. I think she gets overly criticized by the end of the series (she is, like the other children, a very well-rounded character). I was also wondering if you could touch on Anna Popplewell's portrayal in the films a bit compared to the books (you don't have to tho). Thanks!

Okay, I feel *SO BAD* for taking this long to get back to you. I’m really sorry! 

I want to let you know I was planning on writing this analysis about Susan with the books and movies in front of me, since I have neither finished reading the Narnia books nor even watched Dawn Treader, and even the shows and movies I have seen, it’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed them. I need a refresher course first before I feel like I could write a good analysis on Susan. I thought I would have access to my owned Narnia books and DVDs sooner rather than later, but unfortunately, it looks like I won’t be able to get to them (in storage) for an unknown period of time. 

I thought since you’ve been waiting long enough, I should just answer by updating with why I’ve delayed. As soon as I get my books out of storage, I’ll very happily write this analysis! Unfortunately, in the meantime, I don’t think I would have the resources to write something meaningful about Susan’s glorious character progression. Thank you for this ask. I know it's been sitting here for a bit - I've been saving it for a rough time. Five things that make me happy:

1) when kitty cats come up to interact with me and ask for pets.

2) Discworld books. Especially the City Watch books.

3) My sibs. Especially playing video games with them :3

4) Dungeons & Dragons movies. Yes even that one. It's so awful but it's good fun, okay?

Em’s 2000 Followers Milestone Pt. 1: Follow Forever!

These people are truly some of the kindest, friendliest, sweetest, most compassionate, and most intelligent individuals that I’ve ever met in my life. I am so thankful for the relationships that I’ve been able to form with all of you thus far and I hope that throughout all of the hardships and distractions that life throws our way, we can continue to be a part of each other’s lives as something more than just Internet pals or mutual fans of the HTTYD franchise--but as real friends--no matter the distance between us.

A special thank you to all of my buddies in bold! You’ve been such great friends to me through everything from daily school stress to fun times freaking out over HTTYD! If I could walk through this computer screen and give you all hugs I would do it in a heartbeat!
