Howdy, Felassan! Do you happen to know the chronological order of E v e r y canonical piece of Dragon Age media (books + games + wasn't there a movie?), or where I could find that info?

Hello! Like chronological in the in-universe timeline? (If you mean irl release dates or wanted in-universe dates for each too lmk and I’ll update the post.)

Pls note there is some overlap (things happening concurrently). Some placements I used here are approximate or a bit more based on what’s more intuitive for the people consuming the media (if things were unclear in-world temporally). In the lore, some dates aren’t exact, some pieces of media take place over a long period or at multiple points in the timeline, or are able to take place at various points in the timeline depending on player choice. Also in the lore, in some places there are discrepancies, conflicting information, things that don’t make complete sense or things which aren’t clear. So, tis not a perfect list and more sort've like my suggestion:

Fun

Shoutout to a random NPC: The one elf in Oblivion that sings badly on a bridge in that one town. I think about him sometimes hahaha A game you love watching playthroughs for and want to play: Detroit Become Human! Love watching playthroughs but won’t ever play: Most horror games like Resident Evil 7 or Outlast 1, 2 and whistleblower (tried to play the 1st and never made it past the first 10 minutes) Online gaming or solo?: Solo for me please. Even though I play SWTOR I don’t play in groups. Used to play WOW but just with my brother and sister-in-law Why do you play video games?: The same reason I love watching movies or TV shows or reading books. It allows you to escape to another world for a little while. That’s why I love story driven games so much. I also love how games can bring people together! Some of my favorite gaming videos to watch are Markiplier playing with his friends Bob and Wade. Just a lot of harmless fun and entertainment.

DA4 Cameos and Companions

I wanted to address this, since I really liked this post by @quizzy-tielle but there are a few more notes that can be added. tdlr at the bottom, under the read more.

Origins

Alistair: Alistair will probably only have a Cameo since he has two different paths (Warden or King), but I could see him being plot relevant. Maybe only a Warden like in DA2, even if it is possible for him to “die” in DA:I. This is because DA:I leaves that open if they want to “retcon” it. The words used in the choice implies you might be leaving Alistair to his death, there is an open end there. Especially since we don’t see his dead body only what looks like him going down. On the other hand, it has been a while since his Joining and unless he is like his mother (or the dragon’s blood theory is true), then he is almost due for his Calling. So if Al is there in DA4, expect him in Grey Warden regalia.

Morrigan: I don’t think Morrigan will ever be a Companion player again, but she will be a major npc no matter where the game takes place. Not only is she headed where we are supposed to be, but she is now carrying some of the last remnants of Mythal whether in her head (depending on who drank the Well) or in her blood.

Leliana: If our game does actually take place in Tevinter, I think she might get a mention at best. Either by reminiscent characters or in the grand scheme of things. I don’t see her playing to much part unless some of the game returns to Orlais, in which case as a Divine she could very well pop up. As well as still being interested/running the Inquisition’s spies against Solas (I believe even as the Divine), so again a peripheral character. That said I’d really be interested to see if Lyrium Ghost Leliana pops up anywhere!

Wynne: Wynne has actually died by Asunder; leaving not a character no one cares about, but one that even if people wanted her she is unable to return. Unless as a spirit of course. That said it is not out of the question to meet her son Rhys and perhaps recruit him as a companion, along with his Templar sweetheart Evangeline.

Oghren: I could have seen Oghren returning when the team consisted of mostly the old writers. But with Weekes in charge and a few new writers around, I agree he is probably too lowbrow and overlooked (even among the writers) to pop up again. At the very most, if at all, it’ll be a quick mention somewhere.

Zevran: I agree that Zevran possibly being dead makes it hard, but honestly if I don’t get to see Zev once in this new engine. I will move to Canada just to stand outside Bioware studios and scream continuously at them till the day I perish. Zevran deserves more and if Leliana can resurrect, why not our favorite elven assassin.

Sten: Sten is actually a pretty popular character, only he doesn’t go by Sten anymore. Well at least not for most people. Which is where the conflict comes in. For anyone who earned Sten’s loyalty, he is Arishok now. Which big Qunari plot means definite appearance by the Arishok. However, I don’t see him being a companion, at best he would be a NPC ally. On the other hand, those who didn’t help Sten left him without the Qun...unless he went back and became Arishok later (after the Warden) which is a very easy work around.

Shale: I could actually see Shale being a companion. I mean they can reuse at least one (even in DA2, Nathaniel was going to be a return companion but they scraped it). Shale was a character a lot of people liked, but being a DLC character was underexplored. She was last seen heading to Tevinter to discover how to be a dwarf again. So golem, dwarven, or a mix of the two, Shale is a huge possibility.

Hero of Ferelden: Bioware has pretty much confirmed the Warden won’t be back in full capacity ever. Mostly because creating a unvoiced major character is very hard, when they once spoke (unable to make canonically mute) and finding a voice is no solution (they wouldn’t be able to appease enough people, no matter the actor). Which pretty much seals it as, if the Warden shows up, it is in a written or spoken about capacity and nothing more.

Dragon Age 2

Carver/Bethany: It would be such a guilt pleasure if they did show up, but I highly doubt they would and certainly not as a companion. They have too many outcomes and possible paths, it’ll probably be like in DA:I where they get a special mention. OR if Bioware was really clever, they’d make an obscure Warden in the background look like them but obscure enough they can handwave it as “no, but maybe”. Either way, might show up in the Weisshaupt storyline as a special mention, but not much more.

Fenris: I agree with the other post, that Fenris is the one person who would be the one most likely to pop up. I still don’t think as a companion, because he can die. But I do think he could be an ally NPC. Fenris either gets sent back to Danarius or has spent the past years hunting down slavers, so he is bound to be in or near Tevinter. I have almost no doubt we’ll see him, physically, at least once. Though I wouldn’t rule out him being a Weisshaupt too, if he romance Hawke and Hawke wasn’t left in the Fade.

Isabela: Isabela has been in every game so far and if they don’t continue this in DA4 I will be upset. Seriously, it’s like an expectation now. Every DA game is like sex, it’s fun, there is depth, and Isabela is there. Maybe as a companion, maybe as an NPC, or a extra to the cause. Don’t care, she just has to be there now. It’s a signature. Which...if we can get her in her sick Captain’s outfit again, more kudos to them.

Merrill: Hmmm, I don’t know about Merrill. She is such a good and well liked character, and I really need her to interact with Solas. BUT she had far more reason to be in DA:I, in a game that most likely will take place in Tevinter and surrounding area...I’m not sure where she’d fit. Not as a companion I don’t think. Maybe a cameo in Weisshaupt or when dealing with Solas stuff, but even then, her investment in those things seems a bit weak. The most likely place for me, would be dealing with the Eluvians or maybe even helping run an elven slave underground...kind of. But it would really depend where the game chooses to focus (on Tevinter, Solas, Weisshaupt, all 3 equally by some miracle).

Anders: I think at this point, everyone who loves Anders wants Anders back and safe, but also doesn’t want him to be touch by Bioware anymore. And anyone who hates Anders has either killed him or hoped that he was dead...so... Mixed feelings and mixed ideas. I don’t think he’ll ever be a companion again, Bioware learned their lesson (kind of considering Sera). But also being the entire world’s [of Thedas’s] scapegoat for the Mage War/Mage Split, I’m 99.9% sure we haven’t heard the last of some saying something bias, pretty much untrue, and absolutely scathing about him.

Aveline: She is helping run Kirkwall, which is where she belongs. If the game reaches out to the Free Marches, a glimpse or mention of her is sure to be heard. After all, she is the biggest badass there at the moment. Her days on the screen are probably over though, she was a good character but not one interesting enough to last past a single game of screen time. That said, I’d love to see her side-story with the Du Lacs actually revisited at some point, give us a deep Investigative story with her.

Varric: I mean I have to agree with quiz tielle, it pains me but his days as a companion are probably over. That said, I absolutely believe he’ll still have a large role to play. For starters, he is still our storyteller. Thedas’ storyteller and I highly doubt he’ll miss a chance to write out all of Thedas’ major historical events into eye-catching adventure novels till the day he dies. He may be a played out companion (can’t relate) but he isn’t dead and he is still an adventurer at heart, no matter how much he complains about the outdoors. All that aside, he is cousin to probably the most important, incredibly attractive magister in Tevinter right now, Maevaris Tilani (Tethras). I can definitely believe he’ll pop in to say hello and maybe scoop up a story or two, during DA4.

Sebastian: I’m not sure, I forget how his War Table mission plays out...but also not to offend any diehard Seb fans or anything...but he is shit and if he returns I’ll want to punch him. I mean he tried to overtake Kirkwall, for no reason than his own pride and probably a political move to strength his own country. It’s a Free Marcher thing, sure. But still, Sebastian Vael can get stuffed. That so awfully said, if he does come back I’ll still have a good time. Which serious for a moment, I don’t know why he would. Unless like I said we return to the Free Marches for whatever reason.

Tallis?: I have no idea if we have seen the last of her or not. I mean according to DA2 we haven’t and she was a War Table in Inquisitiion. So I suppose if there is a Qunari plot in DA4, you’d expect see her there. But I don’t know how there she’ll be...she could even be a companion. It’s a possibility, but I don’t expect it as a strong one.

Hawke: Hawke is definitely coming back, I don’t know when and I don’t know where but they will. I don’t say this as someone who loved their Hawke tho. I say this because Weisshaupt’s storyline seems to weigh on Hawke’s presence (if they escaped, they said that is where they are headed) and again, like I said in Alistair the decision to leave them behind in the Fade wasn’t final. Hell I wouldn’t be surprised in if in the obligatory Fade mission we ran into a Hawke that got left behind, half dead but still trucking along with that Purple Hawke smirk on their face. “You look like wyvern shit, Hawke.” “You would know.”

Dragon Age Inquisition

Josephine: I think if the Inquisition is there, Josephine is definitely going to be there in some regard. Even if it is a few letters lying around. She’ll be less relevant that she was in Inquisition though, well unless you romanced her. She still has a family to take care of, plus all that new trade and a few diplomatic graces. A lot for her to take on, plus a maybe slave rebellion?

Cullen: Cullen time has come, I don’t think Cullen wants a thing to do with Tevinter cause mages and honestly I’m glad. I mean yeah, he was the white boy version of Isabela’s cameo, but far less entertaining with his anti-mage, but they’re sorta of okay rhetoric. A little salty, yeah. Cause Bioware had 3 chances to get him to a better place (aka make him a great character with growth), but never got there. So as much as I’d love to see them try and fail to make him a better person one more time, it’s time to let him rest. With his slightly changed notions, his lyrium detox facility, and his dog. That rant over, he could be there in the same capacity as Josephine. A few letters and a little something extra for romancers.

Blackwall: A hard one...in theory Blackwall could make a comeback during the Grey Warden plot, Bioware hyped up. He could even be a true Grey Warden companion this time. However, he has a lot of variables and that makes it hard to bring him back as a return character. He could have died, he could have been saved and hidden, or he could have been saved and made a Grey Warden. Not to mention adding romances and whether he got the Grey Warden epilogue or the “prison counselor” epilogue.

Cassandra: I think Cassandra will have the same role/handling as Leliana honestly. She won’t be a companion, but we will see her interacting with the Inquisitor. Divine or not, she is still helping them with Solas. Though we might not actually interact with her, unless Orlais. Again like Leli.

Iron Bull: Another difficult one. On one hand, he could be dead and that is the end of. On the other he could be with Dorian, who I’ll get to in a minute. I think it’ll be a bit easier though, because they can use him like they did Stroud. If he is alive and helping Dorian (or the Inquisitor) then he can show up, be his usual self. Make references to the past game and his Chargers. If he is dead, then he has a blank stand-in that we kind of get to know during the rest of the game, but never to the extent that we know/knew Bull. That said, he is definitely not becoming a companion. Only two characters with a possible death have ever became companions again after said moment, and I think the fact it happens in the same game leaves Carver and Bethany in a completely different category.

Dorian: Alright, if we were ever going to have a returning companion it will probably be Dorian. I have to agree with the assumption. Because Dorian is Tevinter. He’s the good, the bad. The parts that need change, but also the parts that should be praised. He was singled out for this in Inquisition. It was focused on heavily about him being the new Tevinter ambassador. Of him and Mae taking Tevinter by storm. Their reformation of the Magisterium. They even gave him a plot item, that seemed unnecessary and yet provided a link. Which I’m talking about his sending crystal/magic cellphone. It was endearing and also telling. Why need a crystal when letters work too? And I highly doubt it was just to introduce the idea for fun...I’m getting carried away on my favorite boy. What I mean to say, is Dorian, if not a companion, will be a huge player in the next game. Assuming they are still sending us to Tevinter as planned. Not just because he was so loved, which he way. Or because he is an utterly striking, handsome character, which he is. But because Dorian is a major player in Tevinter as is, trying to change his country and you don’t just go to a country and not meet the most influential of them all.

Solas: Oh boy, I have so much to say about this. First off, I don’t agree with the other post. I don’t think Solas will be the biggest villain this game, this time around. Unless Weekes is really enamored with getting that story out of the way, which he might be. I think he’ll be a smaller big bad in the grand scheme of things, whereas he was the big bad in Inquisition (literally all that happened because of him). I think it’d be interesting to see him as a return companion though. Like yes, we all know who he is. But to our new character? Maybe he is just a revolutionist, maybe he was the one who freed them (if they go the slave plot for the PC). Another chance for him to play the PC and we have to watch it happen. But also, we have to figure out why he’d help us with this rebellion (again relies on the slave plot being used) when he has no horses in the race. I don’t know, it is a possibility and a frustrating, but interesting one.

Vivienne: If she is Divine, I don’t see her doing anymore that Cassandra or Leliana in the position. And again, very dependent on if we go to Orlais. Maybe more so, since she wasn’t a founding agent of the Inquisition like Leliana and Cassandra. However, if the Mage College/Circles of Magi issue is more prominent than I think it will be in DA4, then she might show up a bit more than usual. Still don’t think she’ll be a big role or ally to the main character though.

Cole: I don’t agree with Cole not fighting people, but I do agree that he has other things to worry about that the PC in DA4. That said, when it comes to Solas I feel like Cole will be back instantly. Solas and Cole were incredibly close (for a few reasons I can theorize, coughelves=spiritscough), and he was one of the few who actually wanted to save Solas. So if he is there, he is there for his friends and Solas only. Which means no companionship from him.

Sera: I can’t see Sera giving it a try in Tevinter, for so many reasons. Unless the Inky asks her of course. Every thing from the elves, many who just accept their lives. To the magic, to the lack of friends due to brainwashing and fear. It’s just not an environment Sera would enjoy or even want to be it. But if Orlais is still playing a big part in the next game, I’m sure we’ll turn up the Val Royeaux Jenny eventually. Or like I said, if Inky needs her. I doubt she’ll have much to do with the main character though.

Inquisitor: They’ll be there. In some shape or form they’ll show up, that I have no doubt of. How or when will be a mystery. It might be in the form of speaking to Dorian through the sending crystal (removes the need for a CC) or it might be as a Major Ally (i.e. Hawke in Inquisition). I don’t think the story will center around them as much as we think or would like though. Since this isn’t another Inquisitor story, but our new PC’s story.

Tldr:

As far as I believe, there could be a ton of cameos from almost anybody. Seriously, there are maybe 3 who won’t come back and none of them are the Wardens or Hawkes left in the Fade.

The only one from DAO I could see being a companion is Shale, but Sten/Arishok deserves a mention if the Qunari War Plot is going to be as important as we’ve been led to think.

From DA2, I can only see Tallis as a companion, again due to the supposed Qunari War plot. But I’m sure we’ll see Fenris, Varric, Hawke, and Isabela again somewhere in DA4.

Inquisition provides the most likely return companion, Dorian. I could see Solas or Blackwall returning as a companion, but I don’t think they truly beat out Dorian in the amount of importance and content we could get from a returning character by our side. Since Inquisition is the newest game, I especially see most if not all of the characters making some form of cameo.

Some Special Mentions I want to throw out there too. I imagine Calpernia will still be relevant in some way to the story. As she is also someone who wants to redeem Tevinter (in her own way) and could not be killed by the Inquisitor, even being a villain in their game.

Marius, Tessa, and Charter all seem to relevant, recurring characters in the extended media. I wouldn’t be surprised if they roles in the next game. Especially given Marius’s ties to Tevinter and Calpernia

If we don’t have Maevaris Tilani as a companion, after all of this, I will be shocked and scandalized. She has been another character that has both importance in Tevinter and seems to hold importance to the writers (though how this will go now that her main writer, David Gaider has left I don’t know. Weekes still has access to them and he should use it).

We haven’t yet seen the end of Valta...and perhaps Renn. I’m not sure Bioware will approach more dwarven concepts in DA4, but one can hope. Even more so, since I want to see what happened to Valta and just what is happening with the Titans.

Thank you for coming to my rules page! I'd appreciate it if you could read over these to prevent future misunderstandings.

This is a Solas roleplay blog. Solas is a character from the latest Dragon Age game, Dragon Age: Inquisition. He plays a large role in the story, and thus this blog will be spoiler heavy. If you have not finished DA:I (and all its DLC) then please take caution when you follow this blog. I don't tag spoilers for any DA:I content and I would hate to spoil anyone.

I will only be roleplaying with mutuals for the foreseeable future. Starter ask memes may be turned into threads, but please make a separate post!

I will roleplay with multiples and do not practise exclusivity for either Player Characters or Canons. I have mains whose interpretations/universes I default to so that I can write in a semi-consistent universe. All duplicates I roleplay with exist in different universes.

i am singleship

This is the "(mostly)" part of the "not exclusive thing." On this blog I only ship with Iander Lavellan and am closed off for romantic ships. I am, however, incredibly interested in developing non-romantic ships- both positive and negative. As Ian is a companion OC and not Inquisitor, he exists in my Solas's universe regardless.

i reserve the right to follow & unfollow as i choose

This blog is not follow-for-follow. I like to keep my dash relatively slow moving. As mentioned, I do try to keep the opportunity for non-mutuals to roleplay with me or chat.

As for unfollowing (or soft blocking) I won't usually explain why, usually it's one of these couple reasons:

Inactivity (the main one tbh - if I see you're back I'll refollow!)

Offensive material (homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, etc)

Untagged Negativity / Vagueblogging (it makes me anxious)

Untagged character hate (especially Solas or Merrill hate)

As one final note on following: I don't send in passwords. I promise I read your rules before initiating interaction.

Don't use me as a meme resource. Not all IC memes will work for two characters, so if it doesn't fit feel free to reblog. But OOC memes, symbols or asks you can send out of character, which require no interaction to send. I don't care if we're not mutuals, and I promise if you send me something I'll check to see if you reblogged it and send you something in return. I'm not a big fan of the "reblog from source" solution for non-mutuals, I just... pls. Send me something.

I will not roleplay using Tumblr's IM system and prefer not to roleplay on IM platforms (Discord, etc) period. Feel free to message me OOC, it's open regardless of whether or not I follow you.

i'm open to any format

Banter, para, multi-para, novella are all possible. I prefer to reserve longer threads for plotted or intense interactions, and shorter threads for more casual roleplays b/c otherwise there's way too much navel gazing. Shorter threads are also much more likely to get timely replies.

I don't format beyond small text, and will roleplay with you regardless of whether you do or don't format yourself. I do use 100x100 icons (except in specific AUs where I have no icons to speak of), but am open to iconless roleplay if you don't use them.

My Solas Interpretation

I've been roleplaying Solas 3+ years at the time of writing, and I've expanded upon his interpretation over this time. Here are probably some of the most important things to know about my interpretation.

some notes for elvhenan-era characters

Please at least skim this post especially if you roleplay a character with knowledge of Fen'Harel.

If you roleplay an evanuris, please do not assume Solas is your friend! This has become less of a problem since Trespasser, but I'm keeping this just in case. He has no love for the evanuris (save Mythal) and will just want to fight you.

I am open to discussion so our interpretations of Elvhenan better match, but there are some things I'm not interested in changing. If you diverge from canon in a way that rewrites the evanuris as wholly benign and erase slavery from the narrative entirely, then we're not compatible.

some notes for everyone else

Do not suspect Solas of being Fen'Harel without my permission! He is canonically very careful with his identity. The exception to this will be Elvhenan-era characters, but even in those cases don't just sweep in and out him.

My Solas was not Solas first. What I mean by this is, he had several names before choosing the name Solas. I headcanon that Elvhenan elves had a pretty fluid view of names, similar to how Abelas likely was not the name that character was born with. That being said Solas is his real name.

My Solas is queer. He is panromantic, asexual, and agender. My reasoning for roleplaying him as such can be read here, but tl;dr there is no such thing as a cishet in Elvhenan.

As stated previously, he is in a canon relationship with the companion OC Iander Lavellan. I don't expect you to know the ins and outs of their relationship by any means, but it is common knowledge within the Inquisiton. You can read a summary of their relationship story here.

I write the events of Inquisition as having played out over the course of about three years rather than the canon one. My default Inquisitor does both Jaws of Hakkon and The Descent prior to the end of the game.

I've tweaked Solas's behaviour during What Pride Had Wrought to flow better. You can find a more detailed description here.

In canon Solas says some very bigoted stuff about dwarves and qunari. This holds true for my Solas, but I tend to write him as developing/learning better throughout the course of DA:I (which is supported in part by canon, but due to banter it comes across inconsistently). This isn't to say he's cured of his racism b/c it is always an ongoing process, but that he's aware enough to try to check himself.

His ultimate goal is to tear down the Veil and use his powers as a Dreamer to reshape the world to create a future for the elves/spirits- and, more specifically, the rebels he fought with before the creation of the Veil.

As one final note please refrain from making egg jokes at him or me. I'm so tired.

This was turning out to be one epic Vegas trip! First I was able to celebrate 311 Day with a couple awesome shows on back-to-back nights and now I was going to see the Devils play the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena during the inaugural season! We just enjoyed a chicken lunch and now it was time to head to Beerhaus for some brews and see my friend from San Antonio!

It hasn’t been a full 24 hours since the end of yesterday’s game and I’m still digesting what happened.

Tyler took over the Live Thread while I was at the game. Definitely worth the really long day (coming from Syracuse).

Jake Elliott became the hero on his record-setting game-winning kick. But there were plenty of other things that happened during the game, and we’ll have plenty of content on it later today. A neat stat I found from Reuben Frank: teams that score 24 points in the fourth quarter are now 90-9-1. The Giants are one of the nine.

With the report from Ian Rapoport of a broken arm, coupled with video, it is likely an isolated ulna fracture. I doubt the accompanying radius bone is broken, so there is some inherent stability. The forearm did not need support as he walked off the field.

Commonly called a “nightstick” fracture, an isolated ulna fracture clearly shows up on X-rays. So the scheduled MRI is likely just precautionary. Do not be surprised if surgery is announced Monday.

It is conceivable that Sproles could be back before mid-October.

On the other end of the spectrum, NASCAR owners won’t tolerate anthem protests and had strong feelings if that happened to their drivers.

In basketball news, Dwyane Wade and the Chicago Bulls have agreed on a contract buyout.

In addition to the Cavs, the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder are contenders for Wade once his buyout becomes official, sources said. Wade also has a close relationship with Carmelo Anthony, who will officially become a member of the Thunder on Monday.

Wade, speaking to the AP on Sunday night, indicated that he might decide his next move quickly.

“I’m going to take tonight and some of tomorrow and speak to the teams or players that are on my list and go from there,” Wade said. “My decision is a pure basketball decision, and I’ll make the one that fits me best at this point in my career and with what I feel I have to offer a team that needs what I have to offer.”

Shitlist Reviews - The Avengers - Revisited...

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Amateur Fan 2.27 and welcome to the Shitlist, where bad movies burn and Welcome to the first of 2017’s Super Origins Months, On today’s show I’m going to dive back into a review when I started the website and by god this one took me a while to go through as I rushed through the both the movie and the review.

You may notice that I dived into the beginning of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) with Iron Man along with the second review Avengers Assemble, which I made a huge mistake in doing as I dived into it without mentioning the other heroes first like Hulk, Thor and Captain America.

As most of you know, I’m more into DC than Marvel and yes that includes loving the movies as well, but in my eyes, I see that last year’s movies for Marvel was more of a mess than I first thought, Civil War was more of an avengers film as well with the basis on showing that Captain America is really bad at his job on being one thing, a hero, Hell Suicide Squad at least had a motive to force the villains to do some good.

But today we are discussing the Avengers by Joss Whedon from 2012, a Marvel feature and the 6th instalment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I thought the movie was an interesting feature to watch but it had quite a few drawbacks to come with it, so with that in mind, let’s dive into the production history first.

Avi Arad (CEO of Marvel Entertainment) developed plans for the film in April of 2005 after Marvel Enterprises gained independence by joining with Merrill Lynch to produce films under Paramount Pictures which gave Marvel and Idea to release movies of independent heroes in attempt to do a crossover movie.

In the wake of the Writers Guild of America Strike of 2007-2008, Marvel made an negotiation with them to ensure that the movies would resemble with the characters counterparts which would include other heroes like Ant-Man, Captain America and so on, which lead to a release date in July of 2011 to commerce after the success of Iron Man in 2008 though it would be aligned with Paramount due to their partnership.

Casting for the film started in 2008 with Don Cheadle reprising his role as War Machine as well as two major prospects occurred for Marvel, Jon Favreau was brought into produce the feature and the company signed a long term lease with Raleigh Studios to produce 3 other movies, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The first Avenger.

Lou Ferrigno was brought in to voice the Hulk as well with Samuel L. Jackson who signed a nine-picture deal with Marvel Entertainment to portray Nick Fury from Iron Man 2 to other movies in the further future. In March of 2009 the movie was pushed back to May 4th of 2012 almost one year later ahead from schedule with Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth to reprise their roles as Thor and Loki.

By April of 2010, Joss Whedon was close to completing a deal while working on the feature but he told Kevin Feige that the studio didn’t have anything to the script leading him to write a secondary script in its placement which would align with the studio, through-out 2010, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Clark Gregg were brought in to reprise some roles towards the characters as Hawkeye/Clint Barton, Bruce Banner/Hulk and Agent Phil Coulson.

The casting reached its final choices the following year as in February 2011, Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) were to portray Maria Hill, Nick Fury’s Second in Command, as well as Stellan Skarsgård, Paul Bettany and Gwyneth Paltrow were to reprise their roles.

The principal photography began on April 25th 2011 in Albuquerque of New Mexico under the working title ‘Group Hug’ though the production went well under filming there were some problems as a stuntman was injured after getting hit with an arrow leading him to fall from 30 feet, The secondary filming took place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as well as Cleveland, Ohio leading it to the finale of New York City’s 42nd Street.

Army Reserve soldiers were brought in to play the 391st Military Police Battalion as background action during the battle sequences, filming also took place in a large vacuum chamber at the NASA Plum Brook Station near Sandusky, Ohio; as well as the stations Space Power Facility as a S.H.I.E.L.D. research lab.

In December 2011, Disney announced that the movie would be converted to 3d to bring out the effects of technology, which lead to January of 2012 when it would be digitally remastered for IMAX 3D and open to IMAX theatres on May 4 of 2012.

In May of 2012, Whedon was interviews stating his decision on including Thanos in the post credits to state that he would be returning as the main antagonist in future movies though it would be interesting to see him progress through other pictures in the MCU.

The score was done by Alan Silvestri who worked on Forrest Gump, Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit; he also worked along the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London which is interesting as it is possibly one of the most recognizable scores of modern cinema.

With the information out of the way I’ve got a couple things to say over this matter, I don’t hate this film, in fact, I love it, though it does contain some cheesy moments like any Marvel comic, it’s still an incredible thing to approach as it dives into the minds of Stan Lee’s ultimate creation, it’s even in my top ten personal favourite movies. But after re-watching this movie several times away from the original review I’ve done a few years ago, I’ve found more problems than I did Answers which might affect both reviews as well as watching the movie.

So with that out of the way, lets dive or in this case, relook into the movie that changed superheroes in Marvel forever, this is the Avengers Assemble.

We begin our movie with an open narration that the Tesseract has awoken on a Human world (Earth) which raises the question on when he states ‘A human world, so does that mean that there are other planets scattered around the universe with humans on them? Aside from that he also states that they are giving an ally the advantage to take Earth head on with his leader’s Army with the chance for the Universe to be his alone while the humans burn.,.

Not much of a motivational speaker but at least his point is clear, but this raises another question, if the Tesseract is so important to him, then why doesn’t he get it himself? We all know that it’s Thanos and through all the MCU movies, he does nothing but sit on a throne all day; at least with DC movies they at least ATTEMPT to get the villain to do something.

We skip to S.H.I.E.L.D.s (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement Logistics Division) Research Facility as we see S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents preparing to evacuate due to a mysterious anomaly ... I have to admit the score for this scene or a few scenes actually are very accurate to the material, giving it a military feel towards the film as well as a good background, funny enough I’ve actually got this score on my pc, I’d recommend it.

S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson – Jurassic Park) and his second-in-command S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill (played by Cobie Smulders – How I Met Your Mother) are greeted by Agent Phil Coulson (played by Clark Gregg – Iron Man) who informs them about the Tesseract behaving stranger than usual which arises Fury’s Suspicion.

Fury questions Erik Selvig (once again played by Stellan Skarsgård) about the occurrence leading him to fully explain that the Tesseract has been acting strange due to an unknown source, most likely radiation surrounding the cosmic cube. Fury asks for another member of S.H.I.E.L.D. aka Barton which is revealed to be Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner – S.W.A.T.) who has been over viewing the situation.

Though with a brief talk with Fury, Barton does reveal a good point, that if it did come from an alternative dimension and it did take the Red Skull through a portal, what would happen if something else came back, leading it to shoot a portal at the end of the testing area leaving a strange presence in the area causing the entire facility to shake as Agents leave for their lives.

The strange presence is revealed to be Loki carrying strange spear that was given to him by Thanos which gets Fury’s attention leading the god of mischief to kill multiple agents in the room as well as hypnotising Barton and Selvig; Loki states that he needs the Tesseract in order to keep his own peace with the human kind, leading Barton to knock Fury down as Loki and the brainwashed agents leave with the cube due to the portal’s destruction on the facility.

As they leave, Fury gives the order to Hill to give chase leading to a pretty interesting action sequence in the tunnels as they escape before the portal aside from Fury who manages to get to the Surface... somehow and manage to chase them with a helicopter, giving Loki an advantage to shoot the Helicopter down and fleeing the scene.

Fury manages to get in touch with Coulson and Hill one last time and tells them they are at war and in need of a team to assist them.

We skip to another agent who is possibly getting the shit kicked out of her, the agent, Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow (played by the stunning Scarlett Johansen) manages to get information from Russian spies over an arms trafficking only for Coulson to call in the middle leading for Widow to do what she does best (not that) and manages to agree in capturing the big guy while he goes for Stark.

We then skip to... Calcutta I think (it doesn’t specify) as we see Dr Bruce Banner (once again played by a different actor but an interesting choice, Mark Ruffalo from Shutter Island) who is taken by a young infant to see to an ill parent only for us to see that he is severely avoiding authority members both Military and Police for the good reason.

As he chases the youngster, he quickly realises that it was a ploy as the kid runs off leaving him in a house; Black Widow arrives in attempt to persuade him to join the Avengers Initiative in order to find the radiation of the Tesseract. Bruce is willing to go but has some problems with the ‘other guy’; though with an attempt to show that he can restrain his anger, he reluctantly agrees leading Black Widow to call her men off as the start to surround the hideout.

We then see Fury having a brief conversation with the councilmen of S.H.I.E.L.D. about the current situation, they attempt to believe that Thor will be there in order to back Loki up to Fury’s dismay leading them to argue over the fact that War is won by Allies as Fury puts it that it’s won by Soldiers; Leading us to the Star Spangled Avenger himself, Captain America (played by Chris Evans).

Steve is having some bad memories from the war, most notably when Bucky (his best friend) died from the previous film, Fury arrives in the Gym that Steve is training in and informs him on the situation which leads him to agree on joining S.H.I.E.L.D. in effort to find the Tesseract, though to his dismay of the idea on finding it as it was Hydra’s weapon, he reluctantly agrees.

We skip to the Crimson Avenger, Iron Man (played incredibly by Robert Downey Jr) who rebuilds Stark Tower anew with a rare clean energy... actually this raises a question, in the last movie Stark created an element that was not recognised to science, so shouldn’t he at least get an award or something for it...

Anyway Stark and his Pepper Potts (played again by Gwyneth Paltrow) is having a celebration over his idea of clean energy only for Coulson to interfere with an offer of him joining the Avengers which leads to Stark displaying profiles from the 3 main candidates, Thor, Hulk and Captain America, this raises a good question actually on why do they need Iron Man for this choice?

Hulk I understand because of Bruce’s knowledge of gamma radiation and Captain America because of him being assigned by S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as Thor as he’s Loki’s brother but why him? Aside from that he agrees.

Steve is on his way over to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Heli-Carrier as well as studying his candidates but his interest is in the Hulk as Coulson gives him a rundown on how Banner became the man to be, Steve also gets a run down on the Super-Soldier programme provided by the military as well as the fact the Coulson is a fan of Captain America whilst growing up.

Loki on the other hand has a brief conversation with the people who sent him known as the Chitauri as well as the leader known as the Other, he informs Loki that he hates the fact that his progress is slow and forces his hand into rushing the attack, though Loki says it will not happen otherwise, The Other says that he will get his glory and proceeds to scare him before it happens.

Steve manages to arrive on the Heli-Carrier with Coulson and meets with Bruce Banner which is pretty interesting as Banner has several problems with the carrier, mostly because if the Hulk were to come out, he would destroy the entire ship along with it; Though after meeting briefly they both meet up with Fury who briefs them on the situation only for an S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to inform them that they have found Loki in Stuttgart, Germany.

Loki begins his assault on a Museum (I think) which is pretty brutal as Hawkeye takes out the guards leading Loki to investigate the party within, you see, Loki needs Iridium to withheld the Tesseract’s power for Selvig to analyse the power, and how he require the key for it is pretty brutal as he literally takes an eye out of the Party’s host using it as a key to get it.

After he leaves he boasts he ego towards a large group of frightened party goers leading him to state that he will rule the world only for an elderly man to state that there will always be people to fight against him... now seeing that it IS in Germany, I’m assuming that he’s referencing the World Wars.

Fortunately Captain America arrives to defend the old man leading a fight with the God of Mischief, though Loki does have a few advantages he soon surrenders when S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives as well as Iron Man, they fortunately take him as prisoner and force him on an aircraft to the Heli-Carrier, though as they discuss what to do with them, a storm approaches leading Loki to be feared of what has followed.

The God of Thunder arrives, landing on the Aircraft leading both Captain America and Iron Man to use force to open the door; Thor bursts through the open door and grabs Loki and flees towards the nearby mountains leading Iron Man and Captain to pursue. This raises a bunch of questions if you ask me, in the last movie, Thor literally destroyed the Rainbow Bridge so how could he get to Earth? A second question is how did he know Loki’s exact location?

Thor manages to stop at a peak of a cliff and talks with his adoptive brother, though after getting some words of mockery, Iron Man crashes into Thor throwing him to a larger area of a forest near the mountain which leads to an argument between them. Stark threatens him to leave Loki to S.H.I.E.L.D. but Thor refuses to believe it causing a fight between them both destroying most of the trees (nice one, Tony).

Rogers arrives to make matters more chaotic, leading Thor to strike his Mjolnir at Captain America’s Shield at Loki’s pleasure, ok if Loki was there the whole time then why didn’t he flee? Captain America’s Shield withholds Mjolnir’s blow leading Thor to join with the Avengers in order to retain Loki to find the Tesseract. Another question comes over to mind is that why does Thor come over this so quickly, he knows that S.H.I.E.L.D. is a threat...

Anyway after fight is over, Loki is brought into S.H.I.E.L.D. only to pose a minor threat to Fury shortly through an interrogation. Thor on the other hand gives a short background on Loki which imposes on what they are going to do which gives Stark an opportunity to place an electronic device to connect with JARVIS (once again portrayed by Paul Bettany) to uncover S.H.I.E.L.D. secrets.

After a brief conversation between Stark and Banner, Rogers leaves to search the Heli-Carrier following suspicions of his own when Stark mentions that something is not quite right when it comes to S.H.I.E.L.D. taking them now rather than sooner whilst Thor has a conversation with Coulson on keeping an eye on Jane Foster (which raises the question on why, seeing that she had nothing to do with progressing the story).

Anyway, Black Widow has her chance in attempting to interrogate Loki only for him to switch the tables on her stating that the death will follow them as they have brought the beast onto their ship, only for Widow to return by lying to him and knowing his plans. But during the interrogation, an unmarked craft approaches the carrier, holding the brainwashed Soldiers that Loki used for the Tesseract.

After finding the Tesseract’s location, Fury returns to the lab furious in the progress only for Stark, Banner, Rogers and Thor to retaliate in anger in the beginning of Phase 2, using the Tesseract’s power in high-tech weaponry in order to defeat super humans like Thor. This leads to a full on argument between all five of them which gives us an opportunity to see Captain America and Iron Man duke it out.

Only problem though it that the Brainwashed Soldiers from earlier on make their move in attacking the base which separates the 4 heroes, The Soldiers destroy one of the engines of the Carrier and drain the power of another leading Captain America and Iron Man to fix it while Thor goes for his brother to avoid him from escaping.

Hulk and Black Widow on the other hand are blown to a few floors below, leading Banner to unleash the beast from within causing him to go on a full on rampage. Fortunately Thor intercepts him only to get the hell beaten out of him, granted this scene is pretty incredible as it does answer who would win between the both of them but the scene is too short if I’m entirely honest which is the only drawback.

Hulk is driven away when S.H.I.E.L.D. sends a fighter jet to distract him only leading the Hulk to jump from the Carrier and straight to the ground. Thor though manages to find Loki just about to escape but the god of mischief uses his abilities to trap Thor in the glass cage her was held in. Earlier on Fury mentioned that the glass cage would send Loki thousands of feet to the air straight to the cold crust of the earth which is what Loki does to his Brother.

Coulson arrives to distract Loki before doing so to his brother whilst carrying a weapon designed from the Destroyer that he sent a year prior, unfortunately Loki manages to do the inevitable and kills Coulson by a literal stab in the back with Thor watching. But with his dying breath Coulson shoots Loki sending him through a wall only for Fury to arrive to see him passing away.

Iron Man and Captain America manage to get their way to the broken engine but there’s a problem, some of the debris is causing the engine to stall which leads Iron Man to tell Captain America to stay put while he fixes it manually with Captain America pull some switches, they manage to fix it with some help from the brain washed soldiers. Barton manages to fight against Romanoff only for him to get knocked out as well as removing his hallucination from Loki.

Thor manages to crash into an open field but attempts to lift Mjolnir but doesn’t have to ability while Banner wakes up in an abandoned warehouse only to be greeted by a security guard. Rogers and Stark sit at the meeting table in the Heli-Carrier only for Fury to give them a motivational speech in attempt to get them back on the field, even using Coulson’s death as a leverage, Stark and Rogers think of what Loki really needs which is a desire to rule the world as well as defeating the Avengers.

But in doing so he needs to overpower them publicly to prove himself the ruler of the Earth in using the Tesseract as well as the Chitauri; Loki on the other hand begins his assault by placing the Tesseract in a device that Selvig built to open a wormhole above Stark Tower to call for this army of Chitauri. Which raises a question on why does he need to go to Stark Tower again?

The Avengers now begin their defence for New York City at the Wormhole’s location only to realize that they are both outnumbered and overpowered, Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye and Black Widow prepare to themselves as the Chitauri attacks only for them to be helped as Thor arrives. Rogers announces as plan only for Banner to arrive which immediately causes him to lose control and turn into the Hulk destroying a large amount of Chitauri.

The Avengers begin their attack whilst evacuating the civilians away from the city which leads for Loki to fight against his brother to no avail, Thor is easily defeated which leads a fight between Loki and Hulk which Loki loses greatly as he is quite literally slammed to the ground... and due to amount of pressure that Hulk forces in it, I’m quite surprised the Loki can move let alone speak.

Romanoff manages to get herself to the roof of the building and breaks Selvig out of Loki’s mind control only for him to reveal that the Loki’s Scepter can shut down the generator of the wormhole device. Fury however is having some major problems at the Heli-Carrier as he is removed from all authority by his superiors, which leads them to send a nuclear missile to stop the invasion of Midtown Manhattan.

Stark manages to intercept the NUCLEAR MISSILE (don’t ask it’s Marvel...) and manages to take it through the wormhole towards the Chitauri mother-ship while Widow attempts to close the wormhole. Unfortunately for Tony, his suit runs out of power causing him to go into a freefall as the Chitauri mother-ship is destroyed, fortunately Black widow manages to shut down the generator, closing the portal giving Hulk enough time to save him from crashing to the ground.

With the mother-ship destroyed the Chitauri forces on Earth die... (Guess it’s a hive mind thing), Tony recovers after Hulk saves him giving them a chance to apprehend Loki before he flees again. Thor manages to take him back to Asgard to face the Justice he deserves along with the Tesseract while Fury faces aggression towards his superior in hope that if the world is at stake once more, the Avengers will be there to save them in need.

Through the post credit scene, the Other speaks to his master about the failed attack on earth only for the master to reveal himself as Thanos.... which raises a bunch of questions on why but that’s for another day.

And that was the Avengers...

Despite the review being 3 years old, and the movie being 5 years old, I see more questions than actual answers, I mean in Iron Man 2, Stark created a new element which is never brought up, seeing that the Hulk is in the film I’m surprised that Thunderbolt Ross is never around, as well as Captain America past which is never brought up after one scene.

Another bunch of questions are brought up from it but it never gets recalled, it’s like this movie is based independently rather than an addition in the MCU, it seems that Whedon hasn’t been paying close attention to the other films rather than focusing on the one film. Though seeing that his movie is the first addition, I’ll let it slide.

I thought the movie was impressive and still holds to be in my top ten of Superhero films of all time, though there are a bunch of problems with the film’s history relating to the other movies it’s still impressive that it only captures the main characters which is both a negative and a positive.

The main problem is that it lacks on the empathy behind the characters which the films lacked also, Such as why did Thor so eagerly join them seeing that he had major problems at Asgard, why did S.H.I.E.L.D. need Iron Man? Or a better question, why did S.H.I.E.L.D. hold Hydra Technology on the same ship that the Avengers were using?

Though I did enjoy it because it captured some of the best connections to the Comics at that era when the Avengers was popular, the acting was good, but it could have been better, though it was meant to be a light-hearted movie there was quite a lot of death in the film as well. But aside from that it’s pretty harmless from the problems I’ve mentioned.

There are a bunch of questions mainly on Thanos’s involvement with the Avengers especially with Loki on how he actually got to meet him but that’s another story.

I’m giving this movie on the Hitlist because it’s basically the same since I’ve last reviewed it, a harmless film which is both comical and good for a family seating. It’s enjoyable with cheesy moments which you’ll enjoy especially if you’re attempting to get into comics.
