Cities of the Dead

Among the library’s collection of digitized original hand-drawn plat maps are dozens of plats of cemeteries around Hennepin County. The cemeteries in these plats are carefully drawn out into individual plots with roads, pathways, or even named streets running between, looking for all the world like housing lots and intersecting streets. While this may seem odd, the process is actually strictly regulated by state statute (Sec. 246.33). Platting requirements generally exist for the development of any land, but specifying the location of individual burial plots is important should the land be redeveloped at some point in the future and locating human remains becomes an issue.
