as much as i understand shigaraki's death, narratively speaking, i'm also so goddamn tired of society needing martyrs.
what made me fall in love with shigaraki is that he's an excellent villain. all his character development built towards him becoming a more competent, driven, effective villain. he became an incredible symbol of fear just as deku became an incredible symbol of peace. this is who he was, in entirety. there is nothing else shigaraki could be.
when shigaraki told izuku, in his final moments, to pass on the message to spinner that "shigaraki fought to destroy until the very end," it really emphasized how it would have dishonored him to be vegeta'd, as it were.
shigaraki made it his mission to tear down hero society. this was his noble mission. this is what made him a hero to the league of villains. because he saw the systemic evils, he saw the evils that hurt his friends, and sought to destroy it all.
there's something to be said about trying to change someone who doesn't want to change, but for shigaraki, it was more than just trying to rehabilitate him from mass murdering. because to him, and the league of villains, what he was doing WAS the right thing. to tell shigaraki not to destroy would be akin to telling deku not to save. "you may not understand, but that's what makes me the villain."
there was a binary choice here: either he'd be left free to complete his mission and destroy everything, or he'd be stopped, permanently.
Izuku, by reaching tenko's heart, but ultimately stopping shigaraki, was choosing the only third option he had: declaring that he would not let all of society be destroyed, but not without promising that he'd do everything he can to reform it here on out.
shigaraki destroys. deku saves.
that's it. that's the bnha narrative in its most basic foundation. horikoshi did not fail to tell that story.
I think what ultimately fucking sucks about this ending is that it's too realistic. society often DOES need a martyr - or often martyrs - to realize that they fucked up, that they let an evil persist too long. they need a shocking enough tragedy to point to and swear they'll never let it happen again. society needs to be rocked to its very core before people can be motivated to get their heads out of their asses and work together towards reforms.
and that in itself is an evil, that people can't see how much harm they're causing or condoning without some horrific tragedy.
i think we're all mad at horikoshi for failing to follow through on the story because we didn't WANT the realistic ending. we wanted the hopeful one. the against all odds one. we didn't want another story about society using the image of martyrs to get its shit together. because we already know that story. and we're so so so tired of it.
especially when we know it only leads to a temporary peace.
because people forget. they put in enough reforms to feel good, and then get comfortable and ignorant again. when does that cycle end? when can we finally notice the evil in time to PREVENT it? so that everyone, 'heroes and villains,' get a happy ending?
I think our anger with the bnha ending is good. we want different - not just in fiction, but in real life. we're willing to hope for different. we should hold onto hope and fight for different.

Can I request "this didnt turn out like I intended" with shidou, es, and amane?
Aw yeah!! Thank you so much for the request -- I ended up giving the line to Es but honestly all three of them could have said it, it was perfect 👀 I pictured this before the T2 interrogations, with Es being fairly quiet about their guilt towards everything that happened. Though Shidou appears a bit less, I hope I could convey that he and Es share a lot of thoughts, interestingly.
Es would never get accustomed to the screaming.
They’d heard a few anguished cries from the prisoner’s videos. They’d gotten a few agitated shouts when the first trial verdicts were announced. But nothing could have prepared them for the way the prison halls echoed now. Whether the prisoners poured out their sorrows, anguish, or agony at recent injuries, Es didn’t think they needed Milgram’s power to hear the true sounds of their heart.
Es wished they’d just stop already. They knew it was selfish to hope for. They knew it stemmed from their own guilt. That didn’t make them wish for it any less.
The current bout of cries was coming from Shidou’s cell. Es had paused just before passing, trying to bury a wince as they listened to Fuuta struggle with treatment.
Amane approached from the other side. She glared at the cell, though Es knew it wasn’t the screaming that was bothering her.
She opened her mouth to speak, but they said in a hushed voice, “hey, I don’t need you giving Shidou any trouble. I know you disapprove, but I stand by this. I’m the one who told Shidou to check on Fuuta and Mahiru. I’m going to make sure they’re cared for.”
Amane studied them with her bright, unsettling gaze. “Why?” Her voice came out as strangely even as always. She was one of the few Es hadn’t heard any kind of shout from. “If something is destined to happen, who are you to change its course? Do you really believe you are the same as God, having that much control over the lives of others?”
“Not at all.” Es didn’t fight her. They weren’t here to change her heart, only read it. Still, they wondered if they could convince her to soften a bit without denouncing her beliefs. “The thing is, I’m not affecting their fate.”
“Then what do you call this?”
“Putting things back the way they should be.”
Es had tried to stand by their actions. They’d put on a tough face in front of the injured prisoners. They could not show weakness. As their warden, they couldn’t show any uncertainty, whatsoever. After all, the only thing worse than nearly getting killed was finding out you nearly got killed because of a child’s mistake. So they would keep this act up. They would assure everyone that this was still going according to plan.
The way Amane looked at them, she already knew it wasn’t.
So, they figured it wouldn’t hurt to speak a little more openly now. Maybe it would even help explain Amane’s verdict. That certainly hadn’t gone as planned, either. “I wrongfully changed their lives when I let them get hurt. I saw that Kotoko had the capability for something like this, and I ignored it in the name of forgiveness. Now I need to fix the harm I’ve caused.”
“You haven’t caused any harm.”
Fuuta howled from inside.
Amane turned her gaze away. “That was still an outside force. You had no control over Kotoko’s actions. You and Shidou have control now.”
“I did have control over Kotoko, though. I knew my choices would have consequences. This is my fault.”
It felt good to say it out loud. Maybe not 'good.' It was a relief.
“And if I may venture to speak for Shidou…” That man was a mystery, but Es had put a few pieces together, at least. “It seems… he also took some lives off of their intended course. This is his way of fixing that. Right now, this is all we can do to make up for our decisions of the past. Isn’t that acceptable?”
She went to answer, but some shuffling from the cell cut her off. Shidou emerged, his expression changing ever so slightly upon finding the two just outside. Fuuta scowled on his way out, but said nothing.
As the pair stood face to face, Amane’s eyes lit with fiery fury. Shidou met her with a harsh coldness.
“I wasn’t expecting you two,” he said simply. He was one of the others Es had yet to hear with a raised voice. Their two quietest prisoners, locked in such an intense struggle. That had certainly been an unexpected turn. “Is everything alright?”
“Yes,” Es lied. “We just stopped to talk for a moment.”
“Oh? What about?” Shidou folded his hands together. His gloves were covered in blood, they noticed.
“Just that… this…” they waved a gloved hand in a general gesture, “didn’t work out as I intended.”
Shidou offered them a smile. It was one without any warmth, but that didn’t make it any less genuine.
“Mmm. It never does.”

How matched are Hades and Talas in a fight, both in and out of their leviathan forms? Does Hades' new threat display give him a leg up in battles with other leviathans?
Oh great question!! They are actually pretty evenly matched :D
While in mer form Hades hits REALLY HARD, so he's not someone Talas can just push off easily like he can with Graves, and his scratches are pretty gnarly too. Usually when they fight/spar it's 50/50 over who wins every time.
While in leviathan form though things are more nuanced for multiple reasons. Talas has the upper hand over almost pretty much 90% of everything in the ocean just out of sheer size (including Hades) and its just a question of how much trouble other things give him to the point where some fights arent worth getting into (this also includes Hades) unless theres a reason for it.
Hades' display would give him a leg up (heh..) with MOST other leviathans, specifically all of those who live closer to the surface and do rely on sight. When faced with one who didnt rely on sight (like Talas), the pattern on said display is actually incandescent so at least itd be a deterrent (no one wants to bite into a blowtorch)
SO the TLDR for this is basically: pitting a creature who has evolved for an extremely visual environment against a creature that has evolved to be able to survive in complete darkness and is two size classes bigger. The latter would obviously win. Except the first creature is also a blowtorch.

Soooo y'all have seen the new guy right? I thought I'd share my opinions so far:
HE'S SO PRETTY WAAAAAAAAH. I'll be totally real, I saw leaks for him beforehand, but it was just a headshot and a pic of his bird. I wasn't expecting his outfit to have his whole titties on display
AND THE BEAUTY MARK ON HIS CHEST?!?!?!? RAAAAAAAH BITES HIM AND SHAKES HIM AROUND
Rei also seems to have a bit of a :3 face so he gets bonus points for that
Appearance wise, he looks like he'll be like a combination of Quincy, Kuya, and Blade
There is no way that man's a top there is absolutely no way. Besides, we gotta balance out the top-to-bottom ratio
I already got beef with Rei's bird idc HE WILL NEVER BE TOPPER ‼️ Topper is THE animal mascot and that round fuck cannot even compete. Bitch ass bird. Go eat some seeds, IDIOT
I'm excited for Rei :)
