a/n - ahh first request! i hope this is what you wanted, thank you for sending one in! i interpreted it as himari and nanami being the reader’s sister (seperately), so lmk if you wanted something different

sorry that it took so long!

HIMARI

— himari is a relatively fun twin sister. you get along surprisingly well, considering how the other pair of twins everyone knows get along

— she packs you your bento in the morning since you don’t really get up in time to make it and always checks on you throughout the day to make sure that you haven’t died while you’ve been out of her view for an hour (sometimes you have to remind her that you’re responsible enough to take care of yourself)

— she’s definitely made you play tennis with her at some point, and after you told her that you didn’t know how to she offered to teach you so now you’re in the tennis club too

— you have to reassure her about her weight quite often when she gets anxious about it

— you and himari make it a point to have a self care day with each other regularly, so every month you pick a day when you’re both free and do face masks and read fashion magazines together. sometimes you bake together as well, but more often than not it goes a bit wrong and you end up burning something

— being her twin means you’re also relatively close to the rest of afterglow, although you do have your own friends (which himari has met)

— overall, you’re quite close, like best friends, and rarely fight. when you do, it’s about little things like who took the other’s hairbrush or who has to do what chores and you make up soon afterwards

NANAMI

— being nanami’s older sister is an...experience

— similarly to her parents, she doesn’t really like to introduce you to people because you’re a bit eccentric like them

— that’s the main reason you can sometimes argue, but it doesn’t escalate into full-on fights because neither of you want to go that far, since neither of you really know how to stop a fight

— because you’re a third year at Tsukinomori and the student council vice-president, you occasionally run into her around school and such but don’t talk very much during these run-ins

— when you heard about morfonica from rui, you had some thoughts that nanami might be in it, since you heard her mention joining a band at home but you weren’t sure

— once you realized that it was, in fact, the band that nanami joined due to the trend being popular, it became a common occurrence for you to look in on their practices occasionally

— you’re her biggest fan and supporter, you love to watch her perfomances and you’re really proud of her!

— nanami likes to watch horror movies with you sometimes. you try and say no but end up doing it anyway, even though you get scared. she thinks it’s funny how you get nervous when you can tell there’s going to be a jumpscare 

— you like to play music together too. it wasn’t that hard for you to pick up the guitar since like nanami, you find it easy to do things with little knowledge, and you already played the piano prior to the guitar.

— you can baby her occasionally or embarass her, but you do realize that she’s her own person, so you’re relatively chill. you have a pretty good relationship and love each other to death, but you’re not extremely close

Reader x Moca and Himari?

I took this to mean both of them together, but if you wanted separate hcs for each of them, just let me know~!

It’s a bit intimidating, getting into a relationship where the other two are already so close and know each other so well, but your worries are quickly assuaged when they are so quick to rope you into all their arguments conversations

It’s not that they’re mean or argumentative people, just that they have different opinions on a lot of things, and they’re both very passionate and open about expressing their opinions to each other

Himari is really good about making sure you feel included though, to the point where Moca will tease her and ask if she’s a preschool teacher trying not to leave any of the kids out, to which Himari pouts and says that she would leave Moca behind on a field trip

But she would never leave you, she says, and ruffles your hair and pinches your cheeks like a little kid, making you laugh and Moca roll her eyes, but despite herself leaving towards Himari so she could play with her hair too

You find yourself trying to mediate a lot of really petty disagreements, but it’s not that hard, because all you have to say is “omg guys, it literally doesn’t matter who got on the train first, get over yourselves” and they’ll get embarrassed and shut up

Deep down, they’re actually very loving, sweet people, even if they express it diffrently

With Himari, you never have to worry about any day-to-day needs. She always makes you lunch with a cookie or some other sweet, and a cute note telling you to have a good rest of the day, and she misses you already, etc etc

She always has stuff like your favorite scent lotion, phone chargers, band aids, hair ties, anything you could ever need

Moca isn’t as motherly, but she complements Himari by making you laugh and making sure you both aren’t too stressed, which Himari tends to be

If you’re out walking and see something you want to buy, Moca just tells you to step back, because she’s got it covered, and she pulls out her point card wallet and gets it for you, bragging about how she didn’t have to spend a dime

(Himari: “But how much did you have to spend to get all those point cards????”)

Of course, if Moca had her way, you would never go out anywhere, just stay inside and cuddle and sleep

You compromise by promising to watch some of Himari’s tv dramas with her, and you get comfy on the couch and Moca falls asleep on your lap in about three minutes

You and Himari have a game where you try to balance stuff on Moca while she’s asleep, or draw on her face

You ask if Himari thinks it’s mean, because she seems like such a sweet person, and Himari tells you that while she’d never do anything like this to you, Moca has long since given up her right to kind treatment

Even though on the surface you seem like you tease each other, argue, and generally act really petty all the time, you actually really love each other and have each other’s backs, which is the most important thing

How would you rank the Afterglow girls in terms of how well you understand them and how confident you are in depicting them? By the way, I love your stories!

Ah, thank you for your question, anon! And thank you for liking my stories (it would help me to remember who likes it if people left reviews on my stories but eh…)

This is a pretty interesting question, and I think my actual answer is going to surprise a lot of people. But here goes, shall we? In descending order…

5. Udagawa Tomoe.It’s not that I don’t understand her or that I am not comfortable depicting her, it is just that I am more comfortable and confident with the other four girls. Tomoe is, actually, relatively easy to depict and I think she should be one of the go-to girls in this franchise for beginner writers to start off trying to write. I am mainly saying this because, unlike the other four Afterglow girls, Tomoe doesn’t really have a character trait or personality trait that really goes against who she is as a character. Seriously, give writing Tomoe a shot.

4. Uehara Himari.This one should come as less of a surprise to some to be on the fourth spot. She has been focused upon in the Afterglow stories and event stories a whole lot more than Tomoe was, which helps in my confidence in depicting her. Having said that, Himari does fall under the very broad and general group of character traits that I have difficulties depicting in general: energetic and eccentric characters who often have confidence issues. The fact that I am not truly depicting one very important part of Himari’s character is a flaw in my writing that I admit I have and need to be working on. It’s not that I am ignoring it or erasing that part of her, it’s that I am choosing to focus on and emphasize her other character and personality traits.

3. Aoba Moca.Wait, what? Did you read it wrong? Did I type it in the wrong order? No, Moca is indeed third on this list. I will admit that #1, #2, and #3 are relatively close together while there is a bigger gap between #3 and #4, but still… why is the character who is erroneously assumed to be my favorite character of the franchise not on the number one spot? Well, while it is indeed true that I am confident in my depiction and understanding of the guitarist of Afterglow and that (as the Bandori character I relate to the most) I don’t find it difficult depicting her, there is one thing that is holding her back from the top: familiarity. The #1 and #2 spots are both characters that have character traits similar to characters I used to write for in the past, while Moca is a relatively clean start for me. Having said that, I am confident in my understanding and depiction of her and I do not have any difficulties whenever I write her. It’s just that I need to adjust my writing style enough for it to be a hindrance to her reaching the #1 or #2 spot.

2. Hazawa Tsugumi.Let me put it this way: Tsugumi is the character who is the easiest to depict for the general writer, possibly even amongst the entire pool of Bandori characters. Her personality traits are fairly straightforward and they all build upon each other as well. But what makes her so high on the list that she even managed to surpass Moca? I believe that there is a part of Tsugumi in all of us, and she also reminds me of characters who I wrote for in the past including characters like Yellow from PokéSpe and, you guessed it~, Saten Ruiko from Railgun. The fact that Tsugumi also resembles two friends of mine personality-wise (one of which she resembles almost to the dot) also really helps, as all I have to do is imagine how they would react in Tsugumi’s situation to write Tsugumi. I don’t know, I just feel very comfortable writing Tsugumi in general, and she is also a very fun character to write so give her a shot as well~

1. Mitake Ran.It’s obvious answer for the #1 spot, everybody~ today featuring everybody’s favorite vocalist: Mitake Ran! Yeah, okay, so remember how I said that familiarity was a really big factor? Ran definitely has that. Not only is she an almost perfect mix between the two RWBY characters who I found the easiest to depict at the time of when I was still actively writing for this fandom (Weiss and Blake), Ran also shares a ton of similarities with the fictional character who I relate to the most: Silver from PokéSpe (and, to a lesser extent, Pokémon in general). She is by far the easiest Bandori character for me to depict, but am I confident in knowing every single aspect of Ran as a character? Not as much as either Tsugumi or Moca… but overall, Ran is definitely #1 on this list.

BanG Dream Favorite List - 5

So... a lot of stuff is happening right now, and with it, I have gotten the chance to take a step back and look at my favorites once again. The next episode of the season shouldn’t air for another month or so if my maths is correct... which means I will try and close my eyes again and try to give every girl a fair shot in these rankings. Well... the 29 of them who make the list, that is.

I also mentioned before that season 3 has... for me, it’s been rather controversial as is with how much it actively tried to change the returning characters’ personality traits for the sake of RAS development. And while I will be the first to admit that I have definitely enjoyed how RAS has been written so far, it is not fair to compare the other 24 girls to how RAS got treated as the other 24 girls did get the biggest middle finger imaginable...

I mean, to be fair to RAS as well... RAS is not in the game so we don’t get the same amount of screentime in the games, either...

Favorites

Yamabuki Saaya (1, 2, 2, 2, 1)

Am I still salty about the fact that you did not come home at all during Christmas? Yes, and I probably always will. But the fact of the matter is... she’s Ruiko Jr. for a very good reason, and nothing can take that away from her. Even if she is given the middle finger, that does not take away the fact that she is Ruiko Jr. That she is one of the most caring, loving, selfless characters out there.

Aoba Moca (2, 1, 1, 1, 2)

And with that, Moca drops back down to number two... but the gap between her and Saaya has never been this small before. By now, we’ve all already figured out what Moca is made of and they can’t really “surprise” us anymore with revealing a (”)hidden(”) side to her, but... maybe that isn’t needed anymore; Moca is already one of the fandom’s favorite characters and she fully deserves that status.

Mitake Ran (3, 3, 3, 3, 3)

I would say that Ran has been the same as always, but she really hasn’t. In her own unique way, she’s grown as well in the background and really made a name for herself.  And, while I may have turned my back on RWBY, Ran will still be carrying forth the torch from my past that has been passed on from two of my faves of that franchise; Ran really is the combination of both of their strong points and they have really done an amazing job with Ran for sure.

Hazawa Tsugumi (4, 4, 4, 4, 4)

I feel like, objectively speaking, Tsugu has gotten somewhat one-note as of late. Not in a bad way, at least they focused on one of her good qualities but she still suffers slightly from it. That being said, I still feel like Tsugu is a wonderful addition to the cast, and just like how Saten Ruiko manages to give us something to hold on to in the Raildex franchise, so, too, does Tsugu in the Bandori franchise. Just a bit less so because people aren’t running around with magical scientific superpowers...

Shirokane Rinko (7, 6, 6, 5, 5)

...watch out, Tsugu, at the rate Rinko is going she’ll end up surpassing you in the next entry~ all joking aside, I still... really like Rinko for a variety of reasons.  Despite the fact that we have multiple shy characters who do not do well in the spotlight, Rinko’s radiance really is in nice contrast when you consider the fact that she is in Roselia. And while it will always hurt that we’ve lost Akesaka-san in this franchise... we’ll always still have the memories of the person who made Rinko into who she is today for me.

Imai Lisa (5, 5, 5, 6, 6)

Lisa really is the Saaya of Roselia, and if Saaya is Ruiko Jr. then Lisa would probably be not incorrectly described as Ruiko’s long-lost twin sister... or cousin... That said, the very fact that I got to learn about Saaya before even hearing about Lisa would ultimately forever dictate how I feel about Lisa. She is still an amazing character in her own rights, though! Losing Yurishii was a big blow to us as well, but I can at least say with confidence that I think Yukki is doing a really good job at trying to be the new Lisa. Or, more accurately phrased, that I, as a fan of the franchise, can wholeheartedly say that I enjoy Yukki!Lisa about as much as I did Yurishii!Lisa.

Uehara Himari (6, 7, 8, 7, 7)

As an Afterglow fan and stan, I think I can say with some degree of confidence that while Moca tends to be the most enjoyable to watch overall (of the band), Himari is definitely the one who sets the mood and keeps the band cheerful. Her high energy is also a great addition to the group as Ran, Moca and, to a somewhat lesser degree, Tomoe are all relatively calm in comparison (in terms of the energy they radiate). Himari definitely has her ups and downs like any good character should have, but the franchise really wouldn’t be the same without her. Can you imagine an Afterglow-less Himari?

Udagawa Tomoe (8, 8, 7, 8, 8)

I’m trying not to look too much at how static this gal has been as she’s definitely the most static in her band, but... Tomoe is fun, she adds a lot to the table for her band and the franchise as a whole, but without drawing away all attention from everybody else. In a weird sort of way, the way that she hasn’t changed much is actually a pretty good standard to see how those around her have. I feel bad for Tomoe for that, but... it’s how it is. That being said, I do really enjoy how Tomoe is written and how she’s placed in the universe relative to everybody else.

Satou “MASKING” Masuki (20, 21, 10, 9, 9)

Yeah, I am not changing MASKING’s position on this list, even despite the fact that I am trying to not be swayed too much by S3. There’s something about Masuki that... she has a lot of potential and they are definitely doing her justice, reminding me of many other characters who I really adore a lot. The most notable out of these is probably Digimon’s Ishida Yamato who, as some might remember, placed 7th on my list of all-time favorite fictional characters last year (who has been there for, what? Fifteen to twenty years by now XD?). They are doing Masuki really well and the way that she has been written, the way her seiyuu Natsume-san has really brought Masuki to life, and the sheer contrast of the individual parts of Masuki that come together to make and present my third favorite drummer of the franchise: Satou Masuki! She’s amazing.

Maruyama Aya (9, 9, 9, 10, 10)

I feel like, despite being a vocalist, Aya is pretty underappreciated, both as the vocalist of her band and her own being. It might be bias on my end for believing that Aya was voiced by Misawa Sachika, but even aside from that... Aya’s whole character is based around someone who dreamed to be something from a young age and finally reaching her goals. There’s also never a dull moment when Aya’s around which I can also attribute to the amazing work of her seiyuu: Maeshima Ami-san. Very impressive, especially considering the fact that she could potentially be the youngest seiyuu of the franchise.

Asahi “LOCK” Rokka (12, 12, 12, 12, 11)

Rokka has a lot of things going for her that makes it really hard to say anything bad about her. For starters, she’s absolutely adorable and she is a precious addition to the franchise, I don’t think anyone can deny that. She also, somehow, still has a decent and surprising amount of room for development that I feel like could really make or break the character. And while her obsession with her precious PoPiPa-san can get exhausting from time to time, I do believe they depicted Rokka in that mindset as well as they could have.

Wakamiya Eve (11, 10, 11, 13, 12)

Eve sure has been going up and down the list a bit, but that just shows how fast characters can jump (*looks at Masuki*) or fall (*looks at Yukina*) over the course of a couple months. I’ve always really adored Eve, I think they took a pretty big chance with her and it paid off. I see Eve as this parallel that a lot of fans can relate to: a non-Japanese person (I know she is half-Japanese, hush) who moves into Japan and gets super excited about everything that she sees around her, not to mention her obsession with the Bushido. I also really like a very specific characterization of Eve that the EN players will never see in the game: Eve calls characters by their katakana spelling, not hiragana, which I think was a cute concept in and of itself. For example, and this is taken from the wiki because I am too lazy to switch my keyboard for this, Eve would call Tae “タエさん” (Tae-san) instead of “たえさん” (Tae-san).

Wakana “LAYER” Rei (25, 20, 15, 11, 13)

I’ll say this about Rei: as a vocalist, she is getting really close to being my favorite vocalist based purely on her singing voice. As a character, however, we still technically don’t know too much about her and, unlike Masuki, Rei would be harder to guess. I think I placed her much higher than I should based on vocalist hype alone, so... I am trying to be more fair and realistic here.

Okusawa Misaki (10, 11, 13, 16, 14)

I am also trying to be fairer to you, and dragging you down with the main (implied) reasoning being the band you are in is... not very fair. I still really like Misaki, I think she is an interesting enough character with a lot of potential. I do, however, still believe that being stuck in HaroHapi is fairly limiting for Misaki, because not only do HaroHapi interactions almost always rely on the sanbaka doing something idiotic and Misaki grumbling but allowing herself to be dragged along, but with Michelle being such a big part of the franchise a lot of focus gets put on Misaki as well.

Tamade “CHU2″ Chiyu (13, 13, 16, 14, 15)

I look at CHU2 and... on the one hand, I see a ton of potential for her that can go very far. On the other hand, CHU2′s and PAREO’s positioning pretty much defines the rest of the list for me, for better or for worse. CHU2 got a lot of determination and motivation and she definitely will not pull any punches in her quest to try and be at the very top. At the same time, as someone who actually likes CHU2, I will also admit that her obsession with proving her superiority can get exhausting. That said... I still genuinely think that they did a pretty decent job with CHU2 with all things considered.

Nyubara “PAREO” Reona (14, 14, 14, 15, 16)

PAREO is really weird for me, because on the one hand, her obsession with everything and anything CHU2 has exhausted me more than CHU2′s obsession with being on the top. On the other hand, however, PAREO is anything but a boring character; every time that she appears on the screen you just know that there’s something interesting about to happen.

Hikawa Sayo (17, 16, 18, 18, 17)

Sayo has always been really weird for me; I said a lot of the time that Sayo is, by far, the girl who has grown the most in the franchise. On the other hand, her obsession with trying to make a name for herself in the shadow of her younger twin sister, while amusing to watch, also leaves a somewhat bitter aftertaste: we’ve had three Hikawa-based events already in the EN server, technically four if we count the Sweets event as one. Anyways, Sayo is definitely a really interesting character, but for someone who gains so much attention and focus on the developer’s side... I don’t know, I guess I would say I would be expecting more of an impact from her on me? It sometimes almost feels like they have developed Sayo so fast that now they don’t know where to place her...

Ichigaya Arisa (15, 17, 17, 17, 18)

I think you will hear me say this a lot from now on, but Arisa’s obsession with, in a way, remaining very tsun is kind of getting to me... especially since the few times when we saw an Arisa who wasn’t focused on to be a tsun, we saw a really interesting, caring, hard-working girl who, in a somewhat twisted way, placed the need of others in front of her own. I honestly really like the side of Arisa, the one we rarely get to see, where she is supporting her friends in the background.

Udagawa Ako (19, 18, 20, 20, 19)

It feels kind of weird putting the two twin-tails right next to one another on the list, but here we are. Ako always has and probably always will be a really interesting character, the contrast between her bright and bubbly self and her chuunibyou self is always really fun to watch. That said, in part due to her obsession with games and looking up to Tomoe and Yukina, I feel like Ako is sometimes relegated to the “oh wow, look at this other character I adore so much!” role.

Tsurumaki Kokoro (16, 15, 19, 19, 20)

There’s never a dull moment when Kokoro is around, let’s at least give her that. She’s energetic, cheerful, desires to brighten up the world and, more importantly, it’s because of this over-emphasis on the developer’s side that the few moments Kokoro is seen when she is not as bubbly and cheerful as ever are some of the best moments in the franchise. Unfortunately, Kokoro’s obsession with doing out-of-the-ordinary things and activities... I dunno, I feel exhausted just watching her sometimes ^^’

Toyama Kasumi (26, 24, 23, 22, 21)

Kasumi is a really weird one to place because while her status as protagonist and face of the franchise gives her more than enough screentime, it’s also because of this that almost constricts and restricts her. On the surface, we got a bright girl who is obsessed with searching for the sound of the stars and tries her best to have fun with her friends. Being the face of the franchise also means she has a ton of songs, for better or for worse...

Shirasagi Chisato (22, 22, 22, 21, 22)

I feel like Chisato would have the potential to be a lot higher had she been in a different franchise, but being in Bandori means that she gets linked to my least fave quite often... which is a shame for Chisato, but what can we do? The way that Chisato acts like a contrast to the others in PasuPare, most notably Aya, of course, thanks to her experience and prior obsession to become a better professional is a really nice addition.

Matsubara Kanon (23, 25, 24, 24, 23)

I honestly feel like Kanon has a lot of the same “problems” as Misaki does in that being in the band that she is, while serving as a decent enough contrast, in theory, is not a very good thing for Kanon in practice. Especially since the very fact that she gets dragged around by the band all the time slowing down the amount of time she can shine on her own... yes, I value how the girls interact with one another in the same band, but if the developers are obsessed with pushing Kanon in the same situation it... kind of hampers that, wouldn’t it?

Above Neutral

Hikawa Hina (24, 23, 25, 25, 24)

Hina would definitely be a whole lot higher had it not been for a few issues I have... I said several times that I prefer those who work hard over those who are gifted at birth and, unfortunately for Hina... l just can’t relate to her at all or connect to her at all. Her obsession with her sister and trying to be seen as an equal by Sayo, while heartwarming on its own, has kind of... demanded attention to be put on the spotlight, as I mentioned a handful of times already. That being said, Hina is still always really fun to watch on the screen, if nothing else.

Minato Yukina (21, 26, 28, 29, 25)

And here is the girl most people would probably be looking forward to seeing on this list the most. It’s no secret that the middle finger S3 has given Yukina has definitely affected how I feel about her (and I don’t think she can ever escape being my least favorite vocalist anymore) and the seiyuu shifts in Roselia definitely affected Yukina more than anyone, but... Yukina on her own still has potential. She still has the ability to try and lead her band to the top, like she always obsessed over in the past. And, hey, perhaps another Afterglow vs Roselia event (...that is not just depicted from one side’s perspective) might boost her a bit?

Hanazono Tae (18, 19, 21, 23, 26)

I don’t know what to say about her, really... her obsession with bunnies is fun enough, her growth as a character and guitarist is definitely there and I can appreciate that. But, just like how I feel that Hagumi suffers from being in the same band as Kokoro, I feel like Tae suffers from being in the same band as Kasumi, albeit to a lesser degree. There’s just too much of an overlap between them that I feel like Tae has been in Kasumi’s shadow for a long while... and that really hampers her placement.

Yamato Maya (27, 26, 26, 27, 27)

I mean... you’re still technically 27th, but you jumped up a bit. Primarily because I took the time to go through old event stories to try and appreciate the lower-ranked characters some more. There’s definitely a lot of fun interactions involving Maya that I will admit I missed initially, and her catchphrase (not to mention Chisato’s obsession and insistence on preventing Maya from using said catchphrase) is quite iconic. I can definitely see Maya jumping up depending on how far Tae and Yukina fall...

Neutral

Ushigome Rimi (28, 28, 27, 26, 28)

I’m sorry, Rimi, I tried. Your obsession with choco cornets isn’t enough to get you up any higher. And, I know what you’re thinking, dear reader... “why is Moca your second fave if Rimi is all the way down here?”. And to that I say that Moca, to me, has a lot of other things going for her aside from her love for bread. Rimi, to me, only has her choco cornets and how much she loves her sister. She’s completely overshadowed by everyone in her band...

Kitazawa Hagumi (29, 29, 29, 28, 29)

I’m sorry, Hagumi, I tried as well. As I said earlier in Tae’s entry, Hagumi being in HaroHapi is really hurting her. I understand why they put her in HaroHapi, but because of that Hagumi has been on the backseat almost all her life. There is much too much overlap between Hagumi’s personality and Kokoro’s personality. And Kokoro, being the vocalist, received most of the attention and love while Hagumi... yeah, Hagumi did not get much in exchange...

1. BANG DREAM! GIRLS BAND PARTY

Tsugumi Hazawa/Sayo Hikawa 

I love this ship - I really suggest reading their first interactions in this event to get a feel for how they interact, if you have only had access to the English version. I’d especially love an internal look at Tsugumi’s feelings if it’s fic, and a cute shared moment with sweets for art. 

Kaoru Seta/Kokoro Tsurumaki and Kaoru Seta/Hagumi Kitazawa/Kokoro Tsurumaki

So here's the thing - Kaoru and Kokoro talk past each other constantly and I actually LOVE that. I think it's made even better by having Hagumi as a mediator (Hagumi is stupid but she's not as stupid as Kaoru, and benefits from Kokoro's weird brand of emotional intelligence.)

I want to see them having madcap adventures, buffeted to ever greater heights of idiocy, but also tenderness too. Let them get a little closer than they do as co-buffoons!

Kaoru Seta/Himari Uehara/Rimi Ushigome

While it's super cute that both Rimi and Himari are head over heels for Kaoru I would love it if she got flustered by both of their attention too!

Kaoru Seta/Maya Yamato

It might be a little unorthodox to request a non-romantic cameo but I would LOVE to see Chisato's reaction to this. I like that Maya doesn't fall victim to Kaoru's ridiculousness (maybe due to overexposure?) and it puts her in a perfect position to make the first move for once.

Kanon Matsubara/Chisato Shirasagi

I like this at its best when it's bittersweet, something that Chisato is clinging to a little too desperately while trying to look like she isn't. A touch or two of sadness goes a long way here with this ship, though of course I love cute fluffiness too.

Misaki Okusawa/Rimi Ushigome

My poor forgotten friendship! How I wish the game would remember that they interact! They're both fans of horror fiction which is ADORABLE. Make use of it!

Aya Maruyama/Maya Yamato

Their names are practically the same it's like fated (no but seriously. I love how Maya is so openly supportive of Maya when others are bringing her down, and how Aya sticks up for Maya and celebrates all her weird little foibles. Cute as heck.)

2. Love Live! Sunshine!! 

Kanan Matsuura/You Watanabe

I like this best post-highschool after both of them have grown up some, but you can feel free to set it when the series happens if you like. I like that they're both silly jocks who love the ocean, so any work focusing on a maritime theme is A+!

Kanan Matsuura/Dia Kurosawa AND Dia Kurosawa/Kanan Matsuura/Mari Ohara

My OT3... My favourite dynamic between them is Kanan and Dia but I do also love when Mari is there to be the shiny, sparkly bond that glues the group together. Super happy to read about fights and disagreements with these three so long as they all make up by the end

3. Steven Universe

Garnet/Peridot

I'm really interested in this as a character building piece for both of them; Garnet has to learn to not be such of a pedestal and set boundaries, Peridot has to apologise and keep apologising and also learn to give herself over to the moment more. It's okay if it's just a moment of tenderness between the two of them without anything concrete, but building to a relationship is fine too.

Bismuth/Garnet 

Again, I really want to see them get back up to speed with each other. Something harking back to their past together would be super lovely too!

Bismuth/Pearl

This is a bit more self-indulgent but it would be so nice to see Bismuth help Pearl dress a little more butch, get a little more in touch with that side of herself. I'd love for Pearl to open up more fully to Bismuth and make her feel secure... 

4. Gatchaman Crowds

Hajime Ichinose/Utsutsu Miya

My OTP of all OTPs. Anything you could possibly provide to me I will treasure, provided it's SFW (unless it's post canon and they're adults). I want to see them in love but also I love seeing the imbalance in their power explored, Utsutsu's sadness and Hajime's manic happiness, I love everything about them. 

5. Sora yori mo Tooi Basho

Takako Kobuchizawa/Gin Toudou

While a retrospective on their relationship is exciting, I'd also appreciate just plain old flashback fic exploring how much they meant to each other when they were raising Shirase.

Shirase Kobuchizawa/Hinata Miyake AND Yuzuki Shiraishi/Mari Tamaki AND Shirase Kobuchizawa/Hinata Miyake/Yuzuki Shiraishi/Mari Tamaki

I love all of these dynamics equally and would be super delighted to receive any of them! With Shirase/Hinata I'm all about the difficulty in communication between them, and navigating the gaps. When they can connect it feels like a relief, almost, and I love that. 

Yuzuki and Kimari are much softer and sillier by contrast and lend themselves well to goofy shenanigans, especially because of Yuzuki's sharp tongue. When all four of them are together I like it best as it is in the show, but with more kissing. 

Megumi Takahashi/Mari Tamaki

Oh please kill me with angst for these two I invite it openly (Megu's jealousy is a great resource, but also Kimari's stubbornness to keep loving her - they can make it work if they work hard! I believe in them!)

Yume Sasaki/Honami Yasumoto

I feel like its a given to ask for fanfic where the two of them get absolutely sauced and spill everything about their feelings about each other but can you blame me for wanting that

Gin Toudou/Kanae Maekawa

Would love to see this potentially contrasted with their prior relationship with Takako and how they're picking up the pieces from it.

6. Teppuu

Natsuo Ishido/Sanae Sawamura

I really love how integral their relationship is to the work without it ever overshadowing everything else; it's very subtle. Well, now I'd like it to take center stage for once. They can kiss while fighting right???

Mai Ganeko/Sanae Sawamura

Mai is such a sycophant, bless her. It would be nice to see Sanae finally validate her a little.

Karin Kotani/Mitsuko Honma

Good old fashioned rivalry with a spark of mutual respect. Imagine if Karin got to win for once? How would they both react?

Mitsuko Honma/Shinobu Kannagi

Really love how thorougly Shinobu knocks Mitsuko off kilter, so making use of that would be super fun (I also love the contrast in their personalities, with Shinobu being a big teddy bear and Mitsuko being a terrifying ice queen)

Karin Kotani/Manami Hiki

Manami is still such a n00b in so many ways and it would be great if she got some special focus from Karin for a change. The dash of hopeless pity just makes it cuter imo.

Kei Ninomiya/Mai Ganeko

I didn't figure anyone else shipped this! I like Kei getting to break away from Natsuo to talk and grow close with other characters (though I'd of course welcome Natsuo's presence in a fic like this). They can bond over being the sidekicks to extremely intense women who hate each other, haha!

7. Professor Layton

Katrielle Layton/Emiliana Perfetti

Just please... I want to see them solving a mystery together... and Katrielle giving Emiliana a jubilant kiss when they figure it out, and consequently ruining her life

8. Marvel Cinematic Universe

Nakia/Okoye 

PLEASE THE WHOLE MOVIE I WAS BEGGING THEM TO INTERACT give me anything. I will take literally anything. Space AU. Mafia AU. Bodyguard AU seems too obvious, right? In canon, I'd really appreciate an exploration of what they mean to each other and a way to make it work while keeping both their principles intact.

9. Final Fantasy VIII

Selphie Tilmitt/Selphie's Friend (FF8)

Even as a little kid I felt like this was ripe for potential, especially considering how Zell and other party members conduct their romantic business outside of the main party. I'd love to see her coming back to Trabia after the end of the story and getting to relax with her girlfriend for once. (Name the girlfriend whatever you want, but if it's hard to name her how about Tabitha?)

10. Little Witch Academia

Ursula Callistis | Chariot du Nord/Croix Meridies

I'm obsessed with the idea of Ursula determined to redeem Croix by her own hands even when the rest of the world spurns her (and rightfully so!), so something with comedic potential or a more meaty emotional exploration are both things I'd love to see or read.

Atsuko Kagiri/Sucy Manvaran/Lotte Yanson

I love my silly weird protag trio. I think what I'd most like to see here is how they became a couple and then more than a couple; bonus points for keeping Sucy her malevolent, extremely dangerous self while retaining all that exhausted fondness both she and Lotte have for Akko.

Ran

She’s not scared.

She’s mature. She’s cool. She’s not scared of plastic skeletons and fake blood on the walls.

When you asked her out to a haunted house, your eyes all lit up, she couldn’t say no

She put on the best brave face she could, and you walked inside

You were jumping and laughing at the scares, but overall seemed way too calm??

She didn’t jump. She internalized all the fear and let it build inside her, piling up until she felt something touch her hand

She screamed, batting whatever it was away and jumping back, terror in her eyes

She looks around after her heart starts beating again, not seeing any sort of monster, only you, looking at her confused

Suddenly, you started to laugh really hard. She knew you were laughing at her, and although she was glad you were having fun, she felt bad :(

“Ran, I’m sorry, I should have asked. I was just trying to hold your hand!” You explained through laughs, taking a breath and smiling at how much you loved her

Ran felt like an idiot. Of course, what touched her hand had been so warm and nice, it wasn’t a zombie costume or fake spider.

You took her hand, and kept moving through the haunted house

Ran was far less scared now, because instead of thinking about when the next jumpscare would pop out, all she could think about was how soft your hand was, how close you were, how good you smelled...

She was screwed, and not because of the haunted house

Himari

Himari is way more open about her fear

She’s also way more resilient to your puppy dog eyes, begging her to do the haunted house with her

She calmly refutes you, saying that it’s just not her thing

But you keep asking and annoying her, and eventually she gives in, after you promised that afterword you would go on a hay ride with your neighbor’s kids that she often babysat and adored

She’s clinging to you the whole time, burying her face in your shoulder, shaking

You feel a little bad, now that you see how actually terrified she is

But you make it out alive, and Himari breaths a sigh of relief

“I guess it wasn’t too bad...” she admits

You make sure she’s okay, and then grin, asking if she wanted to see the latest horror movie next

She throws a fit, running away from you toward where they were loading for the hay ride, leaving you laughing and running to catch up

Tsugumi

“Are you ready?” You ask Tsugumi, as you approached the front of the line to get into the haunted maze

She smiles, nodding at you. She had been working really hard on preparing for the school Halloween festival, and you were glad

As you’re entering, she starts talking about all the planning that went into crafting the maze, how many people worked so hard, etc

You thanked her again for taking time off the day of the festival, applauding her for working so hard

She had been mostly responsible for designing the various scares within the maze, so you knew she wouldn’t be scared by the ones that were supposed to be there

Little did she know, you had a devious plan to scare her tonight

You had enlisted the help of your friend Misaki to dress up as a zombie Michelle and hide in the maze, jumping out at just the right time to scare the heebie-jeebies out of your unsuspecting girlfriend

To make it as authentic as possible, you told Misaki to scare her whenever she thought best, and to not tell you when she was going to do it

You had seen the hideous Michelle Halloween Edition costume, it was super tacky and not scary, you were sure you’d be fine

You and Tsugumi were about ten minutes into the maze, and there had been some really good scares that got you good

Tsugumi was laughing at your fear

Soon it would be your turn

You were almost at the end of the maze, and you started to worry, had Misaki forgotten?

You keep up chatting with Tsugumi as to not attract her suspicion

“And tomorrow after rehersal we’re all going to the usual cafe, did you want to com- AAAAARHGHHHHHH!?!!”

Michelle suddenly jumped out in front of the exit, fit with dramatic lighting and a loud cackling sound

You both screamed your lungs out. Tsugumi fell back onto the ground in shock

When you recovered, you started laughing so hard, not believing Misaki had gone to such dramatic lengths

(She later assured you that it was only because Kokoro had fallen in love with the idea, and went all out with her)

Tsugumi caught her breath, and jumped up, hitting you through laughter, angry at you for scaring her so bad but finding it hilarious and endearing at the same time

Moca

It wasn’t even your idea. Moca was the one who asked you out, saying stuff like “don’t you want to see me act all scared and cute? i might even cling to your arm” she teased

You said you did want to see her scared, but something that startled her a little bit might just give you a heart attack

Nevertheless, you two found yourself walking slowly through a haunted house, holding hands

You had fun analyzing the decorations and props, making fun of the tacky ones, trying to look behind curtains and guess when the next jump scare would be

Moca stopped dead in her tracks. She whispered to you to keep walking, and hid behind a statue a few feet ahead

You kept walking, slowly, and sure enough, a teenager in a witch mask jumped out, but before she could make a noise, Moca jumped out at the witch, roaring

The poor witch, not used to being the spookee, yelped, clutching her heart

You laughed and apologized for your girlfriend’s antics

Moca kept doing that through the rest of the haunted house, jumpscaring the people who were supposed to be scaring the guests

You admired her uncanny ability to predict where the next person laying in waiting was, and by the end of the exhibit, you were nearly in tears laughing, and she seemed proud of herself for scaring so many people

Tomoe

“A haunted house? Sure! It’s not like any of it is real, after all,” Tomoe says

You make sure she knows she doesn’t have to act brave, knowing how your tough girlfriend was actually a bit weak at heart, but she assures you that she’s fine, and if it will make you happy, she’d endure any fright

You’re happy, because you were really looking forward to attending the haunted house

When you get there, you marvel at the exterior, looking at how huge the house was, and Tomoe is starting to stiffen

She steels herself, and you slide your hand in hers, squeezing it and smiling at her, reassuring her that she’d be okay

You start slowly making your way through the halls, and as you go deeper into the house, Tomoe starts to get more and more scared

You ask why, because she seemed like she was doing okay at the beginning, even making fun of how fake the decorations looked

She answers, “I’m not scared of the minimum wage chum holding a plastic chainsaw! I’m scared of the actual serial killer taking advantage of this perfect opportunity to kill me with a rusty sword!”

Your eyes widen, and you reassure her that it’s okay, there’s no real murderers in here, the security is very reputable

She looks down, and you’re shocked to see real tears in her eyes as she mutters how she didn’t expect it to last so long

You feel terrible at how scared she is, and take her other hand, looking her dead in the eyes and grinning bravely

You suggest that you two run through the rest of the maze, since you hadn’t gotten a workout in the past few days anyway and you could use the exercise after all the candy

She sniffles, wiping her eyes, embarrassed

“y/n, thank you for your kindness. You truly are an amazing person, you deserve better than me who gets scared at such outrageous things.”

You shake your head vigorously, giving her a peck on the cheek and starting to run, pulling her along behind you

When you get out of the house, you two go home and cuddle on the couch, watching a nice family movie to calm down, and you tell Tomoe all the reasons you love her

Ahh I love Himari so much!! Sorry I’ve been feeling so uninspired, no promises but when I’m feeling better I might come back and redo this because Himari deserves the world!! Anyway thanks for requesting! Hope you enjoy~

“It’s ready!” Himari called from the kitchen. She made her way back to the living room with two drinks in her hands, and carefully handed them both to you before she sat down, pulling the blanket back up around her shoulders before taking one of the mugs back. “It’s really hot, so you need to be careful when you drink it, but I put pretty much all the chocolate we had in there, so I hope you like it!” She looked at you expectantly, her eyes glowing, so you slowly raised it to your lips and took a sip.

“Ohhh my gmm,” you moaned into the cup, immediately taking a bigger sip. “It’s so good,” you said, licking your lips. Himari’s face lit up, obviously proud of herself, and you smiled.

“I’m glad you like it!” she giggled, settling herself down on the floor next to you. You and Himari had pushed the couch around so you could lean on it as you sat in front of the fire. Soft music played in the background, and once Himari had gotten comfy, you gave her the other cup of cocoa.

“Mmmm, you’re so comfy~” Himari said as she snuggled further into your side.

“Thanks, I guess,” you snorted, readjusting your arm around her to get more comfortable yourself. It was a picturesque scene, the two lovebirds cuddled up together in front of the fireplace in Himari’s living room, a fluffy comforter draped over you, keeping you nice and toasty in tandem with the fire. Himari was being extra clingy today, not that you didn’t appreciate it.

“I’m glad we finally got an evening to ourselves, sorry we’ve been practicing so hard, it’s just the concert is coming up and Tsugu’s been nervous, so we’re all putting in 200% effort to try to help her feel better,” Himari said, then took a sip of her drink.

You shook your head, telling her that it was okay.

“It’s just that I’m tired of carrying my base with me to school everyday, since it’s such a hassle to go back home and get it when we’re going to practice right after, and…”

You smiled as she rattled on complaints, hugging her to your side a little tighter. She complained a lot, sure, but at the end of it all you knew it was really because she cared so deeply for her friends and for you. This time, she didn’t complain for very long, instead merging into a story of something Ran did at practice.

“Yeah, and she went to hit Moca, but she accidentally almost dropped her guitar like - ah!”

You jumped when Himari yelped, and then again when you saw the hot chocolate dripping out of Himari’s cup that she had dropped onto the blanket.

“Oh, no! Quick, don’t let it drip on you, I’ll get some towels!” Himari got up in a hurry and ran off to get something to clean it up with. You laughed as you gathered up the comforter. Luckily it was thick enough that it hadn’t dripped onto you.

“Sorry, sorry, sorry! Just throw that in the washing machine, oh my goodness, I’m such a mess,” Himari apologized and laughed as she dropped down with some towels to soak up the liquid.

“I love you, Himari,” you grinned as you did as told.

It’s the start of 2020, we’re about two weeks away from the start of the third season and... I’ve already switched around some characters’ positioning on the list. And nothing would emphasize this more than...

Aoba Moca (2, 1)

Yes, it finally happened! The #1 spot in my favorite list for the franchise has finally been stolen from Saaya’s hands. Moca, the girl who people have assumed is my favorite girl of the franchise since I first made my presence known in the fandom, is finally exactly that! It’s honestly not really what Moca did, it’s what Saaya didn’t do. Now to hope that the newest BlueFlora 4* (which is... ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!) will come home at some point... at least it is a perm.

Yamabuki Saaya (1, 2)

So... long story short... BanG Dream is a gacha game where we have to save up resources and hope and pray that we get the card we want. The one dream card we have been saving months for. ...yeah, Christmas Saaya will probably always haunt my nightmares. At least I still really love her as a character? And, hey... she has a chance to redeem herself in her next limited 4*?

Shirokane Rinko (7, 6)

So here is a fun one... I’ve been toying around with a multi-chapter story with Rinko (wink wink hint hint) and once I get past the new writing style I need to adapt for her conversations... she’s a really fun character to work with and use. And, for those who have been keeping track, you’ll notice I have published nine fanfics (and counting) of Rinko; the only BanG Dream girl I have written more stories for is Moca, at eleven. To emphasize that point even more: I’ve only written five fics for both Ran and Tsugumi; admittedly, multi-chaptered ones, so they feel like they have gotten more, but still. So, yeah... Rinko is a ton of fun and I thank @reiriniverse​ in particular for giving me all the ideas and opportunities to write more Rinko-centric stuff.

Uehara Himari (6, 7)

Himari only dropped because Rinko took her place, but I don’t have any other reason to put her one step lower. She’s still the same old Hii-chan as ever~.

Udagawa Tomoe (8, 8)

Tomato-chin is as amazing as ever. Also, for those who might be wondering why I started calling Tomoe “Tomato-chin”: it came up in passing in a convo I had with a friend of mine of the possibility that Moca, who calls her “Tomo-chin”, sometimes jokingly introduces Tomoe as “Tomato-chin” and it has stuck ever since.

Maruyama Aya (9, 9)

While it does seem like she’s staying pretty static, Aya is actually slowly but surely starting to climb her way up the ladder thanks to the fact that she’s really shining in the new songs.

Wakamiya Eve (11, 10)

Another slight jump, this time for our Bushido-loving gal. All I can say is that the new cards in JP are really doing Eve justice; they are amazing. No, I do not play JP but I do check out the new cards from time to time.

Okusawa Misaki (10, 11)

...being in Hello, Happy World is really a bad thing for her. She’s a really fun character, but with HaroHapi being, well... HaroHapi, everything starts to become slightly monotone in a way. I’m sure people who don’t like Afterglow would say the same thing about Afterglow, but that just shows how much I like the band that has the sole person in the Very Bottom tier in it.

Asahi Rokka (12, 12)

Nothing really new for RAS, for better or for worse, as they’re not in the game yet (or... I don’t think they are) except for a couple of awesome songs. Until we get S3 she’ll probably stay here unless something happens to those around her.

Nyubara “PAREO” Reona (14, 14)

Tsurumaki Kokoro (16, 15)

For now... she, too, has gotten a lot of good cards (the vocalist bias on the developer’s side is real) and that Nico x Nico original song that came out is an absolute bop and easily my fave song of the band, but... we’ll see how long she can outshine the ones around her.

Hikawa Sayo (17, 16)

I still stand by my stance that her immense amount of character growth and development has almost effectively changed who Sayo is on a basic level, but... I can find things to enjoy about the new Sayo as well. Sayo is still really weird to place, though, because I have to consider both old!Sayo and new!Sayo for this. More so than for the others because of all the growth she went through...

Ichigaya Arisa (15, 17)

Like Himari, Arisa didn’t really “drop”... the two below her from the previous entry just shot past her.

Udagawa Ako (19, 18)

While I am still of the opinion that Ako got affected really badly by the two Roselia seiyuu switches, I just... Sakuragawa Megu is just too much fun to drag her character down too much ^^’

Hanazono Tae (18, 19)

Dropping mainly because of the problem I had with her in the previous entry: she’s rather static. Here’s to hoping S3 can be nice to our rabbit-loving gal.

Wakana “LAYER” Rei (25, 20)

Now here is an interesting entry who jumped quite a bit, and I can explain the jump with one sentence: RAS has blown my expectations out of the water. We’ve received a handful of RAS songs since they first started up, and for all the songs they have gotten in their first year-and-a-half or so (when were they first performing? I found records from May 2018 but... eh, whatever) they have... honestly not disappointed me even once. And when a band does well, the vocalist bias means a big part of the attention goes to the singer. Let’s hope S3 can piggyback off RAS’s hype and give LAYER some much-needed growth and development.

Satou “MASKING” Masuki (20, 21)

Same as Rokka, CHU2, and Pareo before her.

Shirasagi Chisato (22, 22)

While she’s still 22nd, she’s jumped up from “above neutral” to the bottom of the “likes”. Like Kokoro and Eve before her, the Chisato cards have been really amazing.

Hikawa Hina (24, 23)

Hina still has the problem that she gets compared to and related to Sayo so much (for, admittedly, obvious reasons), but her cards have, too, been really good.

Toyama Kasumi (26, 24)

Five words are more than enough to explain this small but significant jump: Only My Railgun Full Version. That cover might very well be the absolute best cover of that song that I have ever heard. And with Railgun being my favorite franchise, you can imagine how many covers of its iconic OP song I have checked out already. The fact that Poppin’ Party stood on stage performing this song live alongside fripSide is just... everything a Railgun and BanG Dream! fan would want in one performance and so much more.

Matsubara Kanon (23, 25)

Poor Kanon is the subject of being dropped to a lower rank because those below her skyrocketed above her.

Minato Yukina (21, 26)

How the mighty have fallen. Roselia has really fallen from grace, and with the Roselia songs that came out recently being... okay, “UNIONS” Road is all right, but generally speaking my interest in Roselia as a band has been wavering since... RAS was introduced, really. The cover songs... ironically, they chose songs from popular and well-known franchises that had quite the following, like No Game No Life, Re:Zero, and Steins;Gate... but I never got into those franchises so I can’t appreciate them as much as a fan of those franchises can. And unlike say... like RAS’s cover songs, which are also from franchises I never got into, I... don’t particularly enjoy any of the new Roselia songs, both original and cover songs. The recent Yukina cards are also... they’re not “bad” but they don’t leave me in awe and wanting to save months of resources just for them, either... so... neutral it is.

Uehara Himari Birthday Special (23/10/2017)

As some of you may know, I write fanfics, including a handful for BanG Dream! But as a means to try and get this more well known and out there, a certain someone who wishes to remain anonymous suggested this. Also, before I forget: happy birthday, Hii-chan~! So as a birthday present for everybody’s favorite bassist (Lisa! No! I didn’t mean to hurt you! Lisa! LIIIIISAAAAAAA!), have this chapter everybody~

It was a nice late-afternoon when the five members of Afterglow met up at their usual meeting spot: the Hazawa Café. Everybody had already made their orders and all but one were now just waiting patiently for their food to arrive.

Then, someone did something that made the air around them feel ten times heavier. Nobody was more affected by this than—

“Well, why won’t you, Ran?” Himari asked her friend, visibly leaning more and more forward to try and get closer to Ran. Moca and Tomoe could only watch the interactions, both wanting to stop it but not knowing how. Or, rather, not knowing how to do so without redirecting Himari to themselves.

And Tsugumi?

The last and youngest member of the band had already dug into her cakes, blissfully unaware of what was going on right in front of her.

“I just don’t, is that too much to ask?” Ran replied matter-of-factly, keeping her answer short and trying to avoid direct eye contact with Himari. Unfortunately for her, this either meant looking at the couple at the next table giving “lovey-dovey” a whole new meaning, or at the wall. Ran sighed, resigning herself to her fate of looking at the wall.

“Tsugumi,” Ran began, breaking the brunette from her cake-eating paradise and focus her attention on Ran, “Did your family redecorate this place? These wallpapers look new.”

“Now that you mention it...” Tomoe trailed off as she looked around, wondering why she never noticed. Moca and even Himari followed her lead, though they both knew why. While the wallpapers were new and different, they were similar enough to be able to be mistaken for the old set by those not paying close attention to it.

Tsugumi nodded, still trying to swallow that last mouthful of the café’s newest cake with a lot of difficulties before answering, “We did. Some of the paint was starting to break off and dad had been planning to completely change the look of the café anyway. This was a good excuse for him to do so so we decided to go for it.”

“Tsugu~ Tell your dad that we like it, okay~?” Moca asked the girl who had gone back to her food. Nodding in confirmation that she heard Moca, Tsugumi went back to eating.

“Wait a minute... I was trying to convince Ran!” Himari exclaimed, obviously having forgotten the discussion before Ran herself diverted her attention. Turning back to the vocalist, Himari tried again, “Ran! Why won’t you do it?”

Ran was silent, her eyes focusing on everything but the bassist while she was contemplating something. Then, looking over the shoulder of Himari, Ran saw something that caused her eyes to widen slightly; something that did not go unnoticed by Moca. Ran stood up rather suddenly and left after muttering a quick “Sorry, I have to go now.”

“Bye~ Ran~”

Before anyone else could say or do anything, Ran had already left the Hazawa Café. As Himari slumped down, knowing that she couldn’t get her answer, a heavy silence fell on their little table.

Of course, the waitress chose that exact moment to come by and bring their orders.

“Wait, Ran left, so... what should we do with hers?” Tomoe asked as soon as the waitress was done, eyeing Ran’s order that was placed by the now empty chair.

“I’ll go and give it to her then~” Moca said as she, too, stood up. Taking the orders of both Ran and her own, she was about to leave for the cashier when she turned to Himari, “Five pieces of bread from Yamabuki and I’ll try and convince Ran.”

“FIVE?!” Himari exclaimed in shock as she eyed Moca. The look on Moca’s face told her all that she needed to know and, with a defeated sigh, she relented, “Fine... just LINE me the ones that you want and I’ll get them for you tomorrow. They’re probably almost out of them now anyway.”

“O~kay~” Moca replied in a sing-song voice before adding, “Then... Moca-chan is off to convince Ran~”

And with that, Moca left the group of friends, too.

“That Moca...” Tomoe chuckled as she took a sip of her coffee, “She doesn’t ever change, does she?”

“No, she doesn’t...” Himari sighed in defeat, though she tried to remain cheerful as she soon added, “But that makes us Afterglow, right?”

“Yeah!”

“And now, Tomoe...” Himari turned to Tomoe with a fierce look in her eyes. Tomoe, knowing full well what this meant, tried to move as far back as possible. Unfortunately for her, her back hit the wall behind her not long after. She was trapped.

“Tsugu! Help!” Tomoe cried out, but she soon found out that Tsugumi was, once again, distracted; this time with talking about the new samurai movie with the waitress that started airing not too long ago.

Tomoe was about to suffer the same fate as Ran. The only difference between the two of them is that nobody would come to Tomoe’s rescue to spare her from Himari’s wrath.

Moca, now with two plastic bags in hand, was walking down the streets trying to figure out where Ran had gone off to. She had checked all the places that Ran often visited, even those that the other girls of Afterglow did not know of, and she was about to give up when she saw something.

Ran coming out of the music store. And the two of them instantly locked eyes for an extended period of time.

“Moca...”

“Ran, do you have a moment?” Moca asked in as serious of a tone as possible before turning around and walking ahead. She knew that Ran was not too far behind by the sound of footsteps, though Moca still looked over her shoulder every other minute or so to make sure that Ran was still there with her.

Ran was wondering where she was being led to, but she didn’t question Moca’s intentions whatsoever. Funnily enough, she trusted Moca, much more so than any other member of Afterglow.

And Moca was well aware of this fact.

Moca eventually led them to a place that was surprisingly familiar to Ran. It was a small park a bit off the beaten path, and Ran remembered it vividly.

“Moca, isn’t this...?” Ran asked her friend, though she didn’t need the confirmation. She already knew.

This was the place where she and Moca became friends.

“Why doesn’t Ran want to do it?” Moca asked, not beating around the bush for once which shocked Ran. Ran didn’t have a lot of time to recover, however, as Moca quickly added with a smile, “Ran would look great in it~”

“It’s-It’s not about that,” Ran admitted with a sigh. She couldn’t say it in front of the others, but when it is just Moca... Ran took a deep breath, though her voice still came out a lot meeker than she had wanted it to, “It’s that I can’t do it...”

“Ran...”

“I know what you were doing, and I know what you want, but I can’t...” Ran said as she plopped down on a nearby bench. Even though she was looking down, she could see that Moca came to sit by her side.

“It is difficult for Ran, I understand that,” Moca began in a gentle voice, placing a hand on Ran’s shoulder. After a short silence, Moca added, “But this isn’t just for anything or anyone. This is for Hii-chan who asked all of us to do it, not just Ran. I’m sure that she is busy getting Tomo-chin convinced as we speak now.”

“Poor Tomoe,” Ran said with a smile, imagining what she must be going through with Himari right now as Moca let out a soft chuckle. Several minutes passed where neither said anything or moved a muscle when Ran finally let out the breath that she was holding, “...All right, I’ll do it.”

“You will?” Moca asked in shock, to which Ran nodded in confirmation. Moca had to restrain herself from doing a fist pump and instead added, “That’s great~ we will all meet next week at eight then.”

“All right...” Ran replied, telling Moca that she understood the plan. When Moca was about to stand up, Ran reached out to grab Moca’s sleeve, “Since we’re here already, we might as well stay for a bit longer.”

“We might as well~ O~kay~” Moca smiled and sat down again, taking out the takeaways that she brought from the Hazawa Café earlier and, together with Ran, the two of them ending up staying there well after it got dark.

“Ah, Himari-san! Welcome!” the white-haired girl greeted the newcomer with a smile as bright as the sun that was just starting to rise, receiving one almost as bright in return.

“Ah, Eve-chan, it’s good to see you!” Himari smiled as she returned the greeting, adjusting the strap of her bag on her shoulder before adding, “You wouldn’t have happened to have seen Tsugu, have you?”

“Tsugumi-san is inside,” Eve replied with a nod back to the door before resuming her cleaning of the tables outside.

Himari said her thanks to the white-haired girl but wasn’t quite sure whether or not she was heard. Going inside, the bassist of Afterglow expected to see her friends waiting patiently for her, or maybe even just general banter.

She almost lost her balance from laughing when she took in the scene in front of her.

Moca was chasing a flustered Ran around the room, both girls managing to avoid crashing into the furniture somehow. While Moca was wearing her usual set of casual clothes, Ran was wearing a set of black-and-white clothes with a lot of frills that looked awfully familiar.

“Moca! I said ‘no’!”

“Oh, come on, Ran~ just one~”

“NO!”

In the other, much calmer corner of the café were the other two members of Afterglow. Both were wearing similar sets of clothes as Ran was, but they were reacting to it in a whole different way.

Tomoe was sitting at an empty table, her head in the palms of her hands as she murmured a stream of muffled words. Tsugumi, on the other hand, was looking at herself in the mirror and adjusting her headpiece slightly.

It was only when Himari had to grab hold of the nearest chair when she nearly fell down from laughing that the other four girls noticed her presence.

“Himari-chan, are you okay?” Tsugumi asked, worriedly, as she hurried over to Himari’s side. Tomoe was following soon after while Ran, still wary of Moca behind her, wasn’t far behind, either.

“I’m all right I’m all right,” Himari waved off her friends’ concern as she got back on her feet. She took one moment to look at everybody before exclaiming, “You’re all doing it?!”

“Yup!” Tsugumi smiled, being the first to respond before motioning at everybody, “We’re all ready!”

“Why isn’t Moca wearing... this?” Ran asked, pointing an accusing finger at Moca who, sure enough, was the only one who wasn’t wearing the same set of clothes as everybody else. Everybody but Himari, of course, who hadn’t had the time yet to change since arriving.

“Remember that cold that Moca-chan caught three weeks before Tomo-chin did~?” Moca asked nobody in particular, but she knew that they remembered. Without missing a beat, she continued, “Lisa-san covered for me missing my shift back then. She can’t do her morning shift today so Lisa-san asked me to cover for her this time. It’s only fair.”

“I guess you’re right...” Ran had to admit, defeated, but then added, “Just make sure you will join us too.”

“Right right~ Moca-chan promises~” Moca sang before nodding in Himari’s direction. Slinging a sudden arm around Ran’s shoulder, Moca managed to pull Ran into a close huddle with the remaining members of Afterglow, “But first, a group photo~!”

“Mo-Moca!”

“Stop pushing!”

“Ow... Tomoe-chan, that was my foot...”

“Ah, sorry, Tsugu”

Himari smiled, seeing her friends all huddled together like that. With a grin, she jumped in the group huddle, too, before taking out her camera, “All right, everybody, on three! One, two, three!”

And that is how on that day for just one day, every visitor of the Hazawa Café was served by the members of Afterglow wearing frilly maid outfits. All thanks to Himari’s request for it.

Later that day, when the Hazawa Café was cleaning up after the last couple of customers had left, Himari found herself sitting outside with a small towel on her left and a glass of ice chocolate on her right. She let out a content sigh after a day well spent.

“Thanks for your hard work, Himari-chan!”

“Yeah~ what Tsugu said~”

Himari looked up to see two familiar faces, Tsugumi and Moca, walk towards her with bright smiles on their faces. Both still wearing the same outfit that they had been all day, both visibly exhausted, and both extremely satisfied. For completely different reasons.

“Really, I appreciate that you wanted to help today of all days, I wouldn’t know what would have happened if we didn’t have everybody’s help today...” Tsugumi trailed off, suddenly looking very guilty, “I’m sorry that it had to be today.”

“Tsugu, don’t be,” Himari waved off her friend’s worries with a smile, “We’re friends and I’m glad I could help! Besides, I got to see Tomoe and Ran finally dress up for the occasion.”

“About that... you may want to go back inside,” Moca said before a familiar smirk graced her face. In one swift motion, and a lot more power than either of the other two girls would have expected, Moca had already pulled Himari on her feet and pulled her inside, “Come on, quick! Before they change again!”

“Moca, what are you–?!” Himari tried but was cut short when she was engulfed in the small paper strips and the glitter.

“Happy birthday, Himari!”

“What is... happening...?” Himari asked in shock, patting off the decorations that got in her hair and on her clothes as she looked around for answers.

“Tsugu said it already, but we all felt bad that we ended up spending Hii-chan’s birthday helping out in the Hazawa Cafe,” Moca tried to explain before realizing her mistake and quickly turning to Tsugumi and her parents, “No offense, by the way.”

“None taken,” Mr. Hazawa said with a smile in Moca’s direction, his wife and daughter nodding simultaneously to show that they agreed.

“Which is why we thought that this is the least that we could do for you,” Tomoe picked up where Moca left off, stepping aside to let Himari see what was happening.

Ran, still slightly flustered but nowhere near where she was before, was carrying a cake in front of her. The honey lemon cheesecake that Himari once tested and liked.

With Ran gently placing it on an empty table, Tsugumi pulling back a chair for Himari to sit down on, and Tomoe lightning the candles with the matches that Eve brought with her, they all knew what was going to happen next.

“Everyone... you really didn’t have to,” Himari muttered softly, trying to hold back her emotions but needing to rub her eyes regardless.

“We know we didn’t,” Tomoe began with a smile.

“We wanted to,” Tsugumi continued as she stepped back to join the group standing in front of Himari, “Because we’re friends, and this is the least that we can do for you.”

“So make your wish, Himari-san!” Eve cheered, finishing what the rest had started.

Himari was still speechless, wondering when and how they all could have prepared for this. They must all have been busy with the café itself, after all.

‘Oh, what does it matter?’ Himari finally ended up thinking with a small smile, ‘They did and that is what is important. Who needs time to think of a wish when mine is already so obvious?’

Opening her eyes again, Himari took her time to look at everybody in the room. Everybody who had been supporting her, cheering her up and on, and were always there for her. Whether they had been in her life for over a decade or only a couple of months didn’t matter.

Himari blew, extinguishing all of the candles with ease in one single breath.

She was tired–exhausted, even, after a long day. But HImari knew that she wouldn’t have wanted to spend this day any other way.
