Thought I’d do a little art throwback with my own historically accurate (well mostly) takes on Disney princesses and heroines, which I did from 2021 to 2022! Included in this series are:
Snow White - early 16th century Germany (then part of the Holy Roman Empire)
Cinderella - late 1860s-early 1870s France
Aurora - mid 15th century France
Eilonwy - 8th-10th century (present day) Wales
Ariel - 1830s Mediterranean Europe (maybe Italy)
Belle - 1760s-1770s France
Jasmine - 16th century Arabian Peninsula during the Ottoman Empire
Pocahontas - 1607 Virginia, (present day) United States of America
Esmeralda - 1480s France (Romani garb)
Megara - Classical period of Ancient Greece (c. 5th-4th centuries BCE)
Mulan - Wei Dynasty China (386-535 AD)
Jane - 1900s England
Tiana - late 1920s New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Rapunzel - 1790s-1800s Germany
Merida - 10th-11th century (present day) Scotland
Elsa - late 1830s-early 1840s Norway
Anna - same period as Elsa (duh)
Moana - ancient Polynesian Islands (c. 1st century BCE)
I had so much fun drawing these, as well as doing the research for each one! I actually drew most of the outfits each one wears (in their first movies) but they're waaaaay down further in my blog.
I'm planning to do a digital redo of these someday, as well as do my own historical spins on other characters I haven't done yet.
Which one is your favorite?

The Evil Queen
The unnamed villain of the first Disney animated movie, Snow White. She was a really fun challenge to redesign as I wanted to keep aspects of her silhouette and colour palette while referencing real fashion from the fairytale’s historical setting. Sadly for me it was in fashion for a number of decades in Germany to wear “Cranach” style gowns (named after the artist) which don’t have long trailing sleeves. If anything the animated movie has the Evil Queen in really classically medieval fashion, think pre-Tudor & pre-Italian renaissance. So in a little bit of a humorous twist the best reference image I found around the right decades for the Evil Queen was the portrait of Anne of Cleves. So while I took a Lot of liberties if it is feeling familiar… that would be why. Her makeup and what not isn’t very historical but generally my goal is to have recognizable characters with their historical twist… and yes I went way too hard on the details. I had way too much fun.

Ok so i wanted use historical timeline with royal families but with fairytale we know and love
So from what ive learned is if brothers grimm and other authors tales were about real people
In historical context
Rapunzel wouldve been the first in the line due to her story being 14 to 15th century
If rapunzel was a real figure it would
Make snow white next in air given the fact her story begins in the 16th century and takes place in germany to
And from what ive learned with history of royal families in cases like Margaretha von Waldeck,
Snow white in real time would’ve been one of the victims who ended with the same fate
So in historical context since snow white would be dead due to poisoning the castle would’ve likely be abandoned
Since it's Germany in the 16th century, it's not uncommon for royal families to use poison. When we take that into consideration, if Snow White were real, she would likely have died in real life, considering the realities of the 16th century

You know the whole Snow White Movie thing? I'm kinda meh when it comes to Disney and their bad Remakes, I don't react so much but this one strikes me hard because like the Mulan movie this makes me wanna say something about it.
If I made a Remake of Snow White, it would be a mix of the Original Brothers Grimm, Old Disney story and Historical influences, the Actress would be German, because the Reason Snow White called Snow White is because "black as a raven, her lips were red as blood, and her skin was white as snow"
The Reason she is White not just based on Description but also because of the Colours that is in said description, White to represent Birth and Innocence, Red to Represent Passion and Maturity and Black to Represent Death. It is foreshadowing the entire Story.
The Other Reason I want the Actress to be White is because, Snow White is also based on a Historical figure called Margaretha von Waldeck, Daughter of Philip IV, Count of Waldeck-Wildungen (1493–1574) and his First Wife, Margaret Cirksena (1500–1537), Daughter of Edzard I, Count of East Frisia.
The Forest she runs into would be reminescent of the Black Forest in Germany, the 7 dwarfs are Miners who lived on the 7 hills and have the entire Film be placed in Unreal Engine to give the Animation look.
Margaretha von Waldeck is famous for her beauty. Since 1539 she had a very strict stepmother, Katharina von Hatzfeldt (1510–1546) and so the Story would be fictional but it would be based on the Years 1533 to 1554 Germany when it was still called the Holy Roman Empire.
I would have had everyone wear something reminiscent of 16th Century German Clothing for all the Classes, as well as German Cuisine and good ole' German and Weser Renaissance styled Architecture.
