Entries 16 and 17 in my historical Disney Princess series: the Frozen sisters!

I know that Elsa and Anna aren’t officially part of the DP lineup (Frozen is a franchise all on its own) but I wanted to include them as they’re so well known and popular and a ton of people consider them to be part of the lineup.

Ok so these two needed a LOT of work. Frozen is one of my least favorite Disney films in terms of costume design and their outfits are virtually devoid of any semblance to fashions of the late 1830s to early 1840s, when the Frozen saga supposedly takes place (yet another Disney movie with a concrete time period!) If that hadn’t been made clear by a few hints dropped throughout the movies and shorts, I would have had no idea where to place Elsa and Anna, as their wardrobes look so modernized. PARTICULARLY Elsa’s ice gown from the first movie, that slim, slinky silhouette and high thigh slit would NOT fit into the 19th century AT ALL. Another problem with their outfits is that they seem to be based too much on the bunad, the Norwegian traditional folk costume for women, particularly because of the patterns and rosemaling.

For this project, I only focused on redesigning their main outfits from the first movie - Elsa’a ice gown, Anna’s traveling outfit, and both girls’ coronation day regalia. I took a few liberties with Elsa’s ice gown, given that it’s a fantasy go made of ice and she could technically do whatever she wanted with it while still sticking to the trends of the early Victorian era. Anna’s traveling bunad was the hardest of the four to do, as I initially had few resources for 19th century Norwegian folk dress, until I came across some authentic Norwegian folk wear and accessories on the website for this Norwegian museum, which I was thrilled to find! I am also convinced that Anna’s winter outfit is the most accurate of the four I’ve chosen.

I would say it’s weird to look at the gap in years from there to here but 2022 was pretty fiercely dedicated to the Game of Thrones redesigns. Well, I guess there was also modern Belle…. But the Tale as Old as Time dress is the one that matters in reposting so… that’s the only hint you’ll get!

I mean, dresses can be very practical if they're made well but still, I somewhat agree. There's only so much you can do in below-knee dresses with puffy skirts. Women's sportswear in the 19th century did exist, but mostly in the later part of the century (I'm kind of unsure tho), when skirts started getting narrower again.

Also, it's not historically accurate. Tangled takes place just before Frozen, which takes place in ~1843. I assume then that Vat7K takes place in ~1845, and dresses back then did NOT look like Nuru's dress, even after excusing the heavy creative liberties that Tangled the Series usually takes. Nuru's outfit looks like someone took a dress from the 1820s, cropped it, and added sheer fabric and a few 18th century details. The high waistline here would have started dropping lower during the 1830s, and by the '40s it'd be practically at the natural waist.

Additionally, Nuru's dress looks very different from the Kotoans' dresses depicted in TTS S3 Ep7: Beginnings (Koto is commonly considered to be the Air Kingdom in Vat7K). This episode would have taken place very close in timing to Tangled, so around 1840. The Kotoans' dresses look pretty good in terms of historical accuracy and also in terms of differentiating them from other kingdoms. However, they would not have changed that dramatically to the style that Nuru's dress is, in the span of just 4-5 years after which Vat7K takes place.

edit: I often give her an alternate outfit when I draw her. However this is usually still a dress, although less sparkly, because I don't think the Trials are all that physically taxing. I've seen that a lot of ppl hc Nuru as lesbian, so imo it would be cool to see her in menswear too, just to try out that aesthetic.

Lastly, please note that I am in no way an expert and literally just a kid with a special interest on fashion history, so take my words with several grains of salt. I may sound 100% confident here, but the things I say might still be wrong. I would also like to acknowledge that historical accuracy was never the point of Disney shows, but it's fun to analyse them like it was. Thanks for reading through my silly rant/infodump 🌿🐛

Entry 15 in my historical Disney Princess series: Merida of the clan Dunbroch!

So Brave is another Disney (well technically Pixar) movie that has a concrete time period; it’s supposedly set in the 10th century and in Scotland (duh). This makes sense, as I heard somewhere that the 10th century saw the last recorded sightings of bears before they were hunted to extinction in that area, and the whole movie has an early medieval Gaelic feel. Queen Elinor is not too far off, as she’s wearing a bliaut and has her hair in long plaits interwoven with ribbons, both of which were popular among noblewomen during the later Anglo Saxon era (not exactly Gaelic but it may be possible that some of those Anglo Saxon trends found their way over there). Merida, however, needed a bit of a makeover, as her dresses feel more pseudo-medieval than anything. Her main dress especially looks like something out of the Italian Renaissance.

Merida was one of the harder ones to research for, on the same level as Eilonwy, since there are very few authentic resources that show what early Gaelic noblewomen dressed like. I was thrilled to find out about the Book of Kells, as well as an awesome PDF document titled “Early Gaelic Dress” (I’m sure you can Google it), and I relied heavily on both sources. I tried to make my designs as accurate as possible for both dresses, based on what I knew existed fashion-wise at the time (counting Anglo-Saxon clothing)
