Fav New Fic Friday

I was tagged by @disgruntledkittenface to share my new favorite fic! Thanks for this opportunity to share!

I’ve been so busy the past few months that I am crazy behind all the wonderful long fics I want to read, but there have been a lot of great one shots in all the exchanges and fic fests lately that I have to cheat and mention 3 very different fics I’ve loved lately.

1) From the wonder HL Summer Exchange 2019, the fic that read recently and LOVED was The Charles Compass Trilogy by @sadaveniren.  

Louis Tomlinson is a successful writer who rents a beach house on the Cape to try and finish the final book in his successful Charles Compass trilogy.

Such a fun, sweet, clever and funny fic. While a short one shot, it really delivers on plot, backstory and characterization while also delivering great laughs, fluff and smut in under 10,000 words. I also love fic that is kinda meta and has an author character who discusses the challenges of writing, especially since its a skill I lack and so look up to with our amazing writers. Its so fun reading about the series that Louis is struggling to finish writing in the fic and the details given about the plot and characters are amazing and lend detail and context to the fic journey of Louis and Harry. Also, this fic’s Harry is so funny and lovely while Louis’ writer’s block is hilarious as are his attempts at getting Harry to repeatedly come over to fix things in his vacation house because he misses his company.

I love this author so I’m not surprised at how great this fic is, but if you’re looking for a sweet romantic comedy fic, this is for you.

2) From the 1D Rare Pair Fic Fest, a Louis/Dermot fic The Cyber Sphere by @jacaranda-bloom.

As the author of The Cyber Sphere, a series of best-selling books which have spawned seemingly limitless spin-offs, Louis Tomlinson hides away from the world in his fortress-like London penthouse. But when he decides to interact with the host of The Cyber Times radio program, Dermot O’Leary, on Twitter, it causes a fandom meltdown and offers him hope for a future he’d never imagined.

OR the one where Liam likes to think he’s Batman, Dermot has terrible taste in sporting teams, and Louis should really get a cat.

I will scream about this fic to anyone who will listen. At just over 17,000 words, this fic in a short space gives such a rich and wonderful story, somehow full of backstory in just a few paragraphs that really helps explain Louis in this fic, as well as his friendship and work/relationship with Liam as well. I love Louis in this fic so much, his character is so complex and interesting. Once again, a theme for me this summer apparently, is a well written fic about a novelist, as once again Louis is a writer. Dermot is the sweet and warmest person in this fic, very loving and gentle and understanding. And their interactions getting to know each other are so warm and soft and sweet and funny and lovely and really very real. (FYI the age difference in this fic is Louis is 28 and Dermot is 32, so if you’re on the fence bc of the IRL age difference, that isn’t at play in this fic).

This is a really immersive fic that you can read quickly in one shot, but this short fic feels much longer when you’re done, in an amazing way, because it is so rich and complex and you understand all the characters so well despite the length being so short. 

If you’re looking for a heart warming fic with a bit of famous/non-famous and strangers to lovers featuring adults opening up and beginning a relationship, this sweet and warm fic is for you. Give it a shot if you read outside of HL, its an amazing pair and an amazing fic that just feels like a warm hug.

3) Social media AU Electric Love by @greenandbluebubblegum.

A college au HL strangers to friends to lovers fic told through social media posts and texts. I followed this whole series on this author’s tumblr, and it was such a fun and different way to read fic. Really immersive with all the texts and ig posts. Sweet and funny with some angst mixed in and side Ziam plus friends Niall and Bebe. Loved it!

Bonus mention cause I can’t even stick to my own rules and only list three: if you like Tomlinshaw, I LOVED Walk Walk Fashion Baby by @disgruntledkittenface. A really sweet fic about established relationship Tomlinshaw where Nick dresses Louis for a week for an article, which leads to some much needed self-discovery and communication and personal and relationship growth along the way. Deals with real life personal and relationship issues in a sweet and funny way, and filled with loving supportive mature friendships and romantic relationships. Loved it!

The other man laughed as he swung a bag into the overhead compartment and slid into the seat. “You were well caught up in that book, mate. What are you reading?”

Harry paused, wondering how to explain the fact that he was reading an epic and x-rated romance that was the story of a relationship between a prince and the man he’d enslaved. “Oh, you know, just some fiction my sister recommended.” He turned to look at the man and froze.

Sitting next to him was Louis Tomlinson.

“This is our neighboor, Harry. Come say hi to him.”

The little girl looked at Harry and gave him a shy smile. He kneeled in front of the armchair and held out his hand. “I'm Harry, what's your name?”

“Lilly,” she replied, softly. She looked at his hand and took it in her own small ones. Louis' eyes widened.

“Like the flower?” Harry asked and she nodded, happily. “It's very nice to meet you, Lilly,” he shook her hand up and down as far as her arms could go, and all her bad mood was gone in an instant, dissolved in a big smile.

Harry steadies his jaw. “What do you want from me?”

Louis’ bottom lip wobbles. “I’m not gay.”

“Are you trying to convince me, or yourself?”

And at that, Louis seems to completely lose his shit. He rushes towards Harry, banging his fists on Harry’s collarbones in a frenzy, and begins yelling-- “I hate you! I hate you! I fucking hate you so much!”

Tears are rushing down his cheeks, and then he’s shoving Harry away, drunk out of his ass, causing Harry to stumble back a bit. Louis then begins to clutch at himself, fisting his own clothes to his chest, dribble falling from his mouth, his arms shaky and his back hunched.

“Fuckfuckfuckufkcufkc!” He spits, face contorted, hands trembling. “I hate you!”

“No, you don’t.” Harry steps forward, face concerned. “You don’t hate me.”

2. Work you are most proud of (and why):

It has to be, hands down, Mistletoes & Wrackspurts series (ELTHDIM, SOLS(ILY) and IYEWBIL - and now Part 4 as well). I fell in love with the universe Syn and I created. I feel in love with the characters, I’m too attached to them now and I can’t wait to show everyone what we have in store for them. I don’t know, I just love it, getting immersed in writing Wizard Harry and Muggle Louis and being able to include HP aspects in it is just the best part. Even if it’s not a story for everyone’s likes, even if my writing is still not the best, I always give my best when I write about this universe and I’m immensely proud of what we did with it so far!

3. Work you are least proud of (and why):

I can’t say I’m least proud of it, but if I have to rank, it would be Bright Eyes, only because all the while I was writing it I was like: what’s the point? what do I want to accomplish with this fic? will people even like it?. And also because I kinda struggled writing it for a bit, so this one gave me a bit of hard time I guess. But there are aspects of it that I am proud, because it was initially a fanfic in Portuguese I had written when I was around 15-17 (lol), inspired by a classical Brazilian author’s story and I managed to turn into Larry, so yay for me hahaha

4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

I remember 0 things about what I wrote, so this is hard for me to answer LMAO 

I know I get really emotional when rereading the reunion scene from IYEWBIL (and also the argument scene too), so I guess that whole part is a favorite, but right now I might say it’s something from Part 4 that hasn’t been posted yet and it hasn’t been beta’ed either but I’ll put it in here, so....

Right there, as the clock almost hit midnight marking the beginning of a New Year, Harry was sure he couldn’t possible love Louis more, he couldn’t possibly want nothing else but to share his life with him, share a home with him too.

5. Share or describe a favorite comment you received:

God, I can’t choose a favorite comment because I’m a sucker for all of them. People saying nice things and saying how much they enjoy our works is the best thing for me. I gotta say tho, @broccoliwasdone‘s private comments are the best ones HAHAHA but also @doctorrainbows‘s ones were amazing to read (I LOVE ROSIE AND HER COMMENTS TO DEATH AHJAAHAJ), @happilylouie‘s (<333), @thestainofredwine‘s (AMANDA I MISS YOU) and @finck-you-freeky‘s (and all the tie kink anons hahaha <3 ) as well.

6. A time when writing was really, really hard:

Every time I write I struggle with something, gotta love me some writer’s blocks :D But I guess I could say there were 3 main times this year: When I was writing Love Like Wildfire, because writing a/b/o was a first for me and I didn’t know if I was doing it right (and my anxiety was acting up at the same time so, yay), then when I tried to write mine and Syn’s McSmutty fic (rip this one lmao), I barely started writing it and I already hated it, so I gave up lol (one day we might get back to it, who knows hahaha) and lastly when I was writing Bright Eyes as I mentioned before.

7. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

Probably a scene in Bright Eyes hahaha if you read it, you might know which one I’m talking about. God, that was hard (ehehe). Oh, but also IYEWBIL’s argument scene. That was an intense one and I can’t believe it didn’t suck after all :D

8. How did you grow as a writer this year:

To begin with, it was the year I wrote more fics haha so I guess it gave me more opportunities to get my writing better and see what works for me or not. I’m still not confident enough about my writing, but I think I improved it a bit and I’m proud of how my works were done.

9. How do you hope to grow next year:

I hope I get to improve myself even more. I hope to keep exploring new things, because the most challenging things to do are the ones who help us grow the most. And as any author out there, I hope my works get more recognized and that more people enjoy it, because people’s comments and inputs on my fics is what fuels me to keep going.

10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

Who would it be if not @regulusarcblack? This binch has been with me through it all, has helped me, has called me out, we have argued back and forth HAHAHA but, Syn is my rock when it comes to writing (and everything else), so whatever we do together, or apart, she’s a constant in all of them, so I have to thank her a huge amount. 

My lovely @britpickerhl​ is also another important influence on me, helping me so much and giving me encouragement and confidence with her comments when she’s beta’ing for us! I can’t thank you enough for being on this ride with us!

And........ of course @broccoliwasdone​ because Genny is the best cheerleader and PR person out there HAHAHAHAHAH Whenever I need reassurance, she’s there to read my stuff and help me out. ALL MARCEL (THE OWL)’S SCENES ARE DEDICATED TO HER!!!!!!!!! I love you binch.

And the writer’s gc as well, even if for the short time we’ve known each other, you all helped me a lot, so thanks! :D

12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

As I said in question 9, the most challenging things to do are the ones who help us grow the most, so don’t stop yourself from trying. Keep on writing, even if it’s only for yourself or 3 other people, because there might be someone out there who will enjoy it, even if you hate it. Don’t be afraid of putting yourself out there. Don’t be intimidated by other authors or fics who seem to be bigger and doing better than yours. Everybody has their own audience and even if yours is small, they are worth it, so much. (and let’s not forget that sometimes..... things that are bigger and more famous are..... worse *drops mic*)

13. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

I haven’t thought much about what I want to write next year. The only real commitment I have is with the HL Song Lyric Exchange, and I already know this is going to be another challenge in my life haha. M&W series is a constant in our lives, so let’s see what more shall we bring into this universe! I have a few other ideas that I don’t know if they will come to life, but let’s wait and see what will happen :D

hola! so both @karamelised and @cherrystreet tagged me in the thing where i have to post my five favorite fics that i’ve written. so im just gonna go ahead and do that.

1. you drive me wild (you know you do) is the only fic i can honestly say i wrote for myself and for my own personal entertainment. at the time, i had only been lurking--i didnt even have this tumblr yet, and i hadnt written anything for this fandom and i hadnt written fanfiction in...7 months. i had already thought i was completely done with fic writing, when i saw the prompt on alice intenselouis’ blog and it truly like...haunted me. i spent the rest of the day resisting, then half the next day writing like a woman possessed (i still remember thinking “i have no idea what to do with this fic but it’s okay i’m not gonna finish it i have commitment issues and i’m not gonna post it anyway” haha lol i was very funny.) it was all my first time to write smut and when i actually did finish the fic i was like. wtf am i gonna do w this shit. so i posted it. went to sleep, and woke up to it blowing up. that was so fun.

2. let me make a thing of cream and stars was another fun one. it started off with the planking scene--i loved the idea of famous harry and radio dj louis--and after that i just kind of let myself run wild with it. i had literally no plan for it, no outline, nothing. i was just like “oh is this what we’re doing now? cool” the entire time.

3. the ugly ass yellow shirt (no i promise i’m not just reciting my fics in chronological order) was crazy fun. i was lamenting about that yellow shirt harry wore in otra mnl 1 (i don’t like it, if you must know--i think it’s an eyesore. i don’t like the color yellow haha) then somehow the conversation turned to princess going “omg imagine louis wearing the yellow shirt and riding harry with it” and it was just. it was born, in all its glory. i’m particularly proud of the crayola website jokes, i still laugh when i reread it. good job past me for making present me laugh.

4. somethin’ bout you was what i wrote for the hl spring exchange 2016, and something i’m incredibly proud of. first of all, it’s over 50k--never did i think i would be able to write so much, but i did. second of all, it has actual plot. wow. plot, truly a rare thing in my fics. third of all, the idea of a reverse stockholm syndrome was something ive always wanted to explore and i think i did a pretty okay job doing so! and fourth of all, i wrote that in the span of 2 months and kept the outline in my head. like, i never wrote/typed down the outline. it was just there in my brain. and i remembered. i’m proud of myself for remembering.

5. blind from this sweet, sweet craving was something i wrote in 6 days. i was jet-lagged from being in canada for 3 weeks and i was up odd hours because the timezone was completely opposite and i decided the best thing to do to cure jet-lag was to write a fake relationship drabble, which turned into a fake relationship au. i dont know how it worked but it worked and i came out of it with a back-to-normal body clock and a 30k fake relationship au. [shrugs] could’ve been worse, i guess. also 6 days. how tf did i do that.

What I am writing

I was tagged by @dimpled-halo to share what I’m working on. <3 <3 <3

My list is fairly short because I am terrible at switching back and forth between fics. 

1. My Big Bang fic, Looking Through You. It’s actually in editing stages at this point. Woo! It’s a friends to lovers, famous/not famous (songwriter/producer Louis and pop star Harry). It’s pretty angsty, I guess, but with a happy ending! 

2. I have a wip Tomlinshaw fic, but tonight you’re on my mind. I really want to get back to this one as soon as I’m done with my Big Bang fic. It’s a famous/famous au, Nick is a radio DJ (so his character is sort of canon), but Louis is a drummer in a rock band. 

3. I started a fic last fall/winter that was supposed to be my Big Bang, but I abandoned it because I got scared I didn’t know what I was going to do with it. So I gave it up and started writing Looking Through You for Big Bang instead. But I think I want to get it back out and maybe it could work for something in the HL Yearly fic fest. It’s a two part fic. In the first part they’re in high school and have some unrequited mutual feelings for each other. In the second part they meet again ten years later. 

4. I have an ongoing series with the OT4 Email Chain fics. So I suppose there might be more of those someday, but none I’m working on right now. Let’s be real...I write those for people’s birthdays because it’s usually easier for me than writing something else for them. ahaha. 

What’s to come...

5. I signed up for the summer exchange, and all I’ll say about that for now is that it’s going to be an enemies to lovers, neighbors au. There’s a twist that I can’t talk about or the person I’m writing for will definitely know I have them. lol. 

6. I’m also thinking I’ll sign up for Reverse Bang, the Historical exchange, and the Tomlinshaw exchange. Unless I decide later that I’m an idiot and that’s too many things.
