Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you recommend?

Many! For HL, current faves are Knockturn Alley and Arsonist's Lullaby (anything Makila writes tbh); Crime and Remission was great, and we're lost, but holdin' hands is feeding all my OT3 needs right now. The only one I remember off the top of my head from the old LJ days is Opus (one of the three sibling pairs that inspired my Marvolo arc) but I know there was a lot of good marauder fic out there. Outside the wizarding world, The Heart Rate of a Mouse is probably the most intensely absorbing fic I've ever read, and The Great Sex Olympics of 221B was amazing.

16. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Share one of them?

I have many if just vague ideas count! And I'm sure you'll be pleased that they all revolve around Homelander, one way or another lol. I hate "claiming" prompts on the Meow meow prompt jar because it feels like hogging it unless I'm going to be actively writing, but I did just sign up for your "fertility treatment" prompt. My brain is often eaten up by the idea of HL being happily pregnant, and really self-satisfied to the point of being annoying. Meanwhile Butcher's probably kind of worried-- not like HL's going to be able to get a C section, at least not through conventional means. HL's blithely all 'we'll cross that bridge when we get there.' He's just enthused about getting to use a breast pump in the near future, and probably the fact that the baby he has is going to adore him unconditionally.

Yes, I am gross.

26. Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?

Hrm. Unfortunately the wildest ride is still probably the first fic I ever posted publicly. Originally on LJ. 51k words. 12 chapters. Of... me being a teenage edgelord and writing about Captain Hook privateprisoning a prepubertal boy, that's not ever going to grow up, as if the chanslash wasn't bad enough.

Anyway, I skimmed through this fic about a year ago just to recall what was in it again, and I had forgotten just how fucked that story is, beyond even the pairing premise itself. There's gangrape of a child, ye olde macabre medical horror, and severe emotional trauma and manipulation/gaslighting that leads to really inappropriate bonding. But it did have impressive levels of worldbuilding, and pretty intricate dynamics between the, um, leads, but also side characters. It was a very rich environment. I was "1 or 2 chapters away from finishing it" and then never did, because, damn that thing was hard to wrap up in a not-completely-disturbing ending. I still occasionally get requests to finish it and people are subscribed, but I would not be able to get back into whatever mindset I had at that age. "Wildest" ! = "good" lol, but I'd never delete it.

39. Share a snippet from a WIP

Heh, full disclosure I criiiinge posting snippets of my fics because they're so awkward out of context, it's like walking in in the middle of sex. But here you go, from a section you asked for. I wish I just had this done and posted to AO3 -__-

Homelander probably senses the hesitation and decides to get himself up to a kneeling position, tilting his face up, licking his lips invitingly, probably hoping to defuse and redirect the weird energy in the room into something sexual rather than violent.

"Oh no you don't." Instead of undoing his fly, Butcher hoists Homelander up to his feet and pulls him out of the cage and towards the breakfast nook. "Lie down across my lap," he commands once he's situated himself in a chair.

"Why did you--" Homelander's words catch in his throat as Butcher yanks him down to lie across his lap, not waiting for obedience. "…take Temp V?" He sounds worried, and tries to lift his head, only to get his shoulders shoved back down.

The first thwack across Homelander's ass sounds really loud, echoing off the walls of the living room. Butcher gave it his all, somewhat forgetting that his strength was amped up. His palm smarts and he can only guess what it feels like on the receiving end. Homelander doesn't make a sound, maybe too shocked. Butcher swats him again.

"Really? This is just childi—" Another thwack resounds across the room and Homelander breathes hard through his nose. "That hurts, you know," he hisses.

"Yeah, that's the general idea. I know no one probably ever punished you while you were growing up, so it must be a new concept…" Butcher trails off, suddenly recalling the photocopied lab notes from Vought and realizing what he's saying is uncharitable.

Homelander doesn't argue, just lets out a strained whimper when Butcher's next whack lands square on the place he hit the first time. Angry red splotches are forming on his skin, helpfully marking out where he's already been hit and where he hasn't.

69. What work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?

I'm not embarrassed per se, but I probably should be (if by nothing else than the sheer length of these three). Original dates, reposted to AO3 later.

2003- 51k chanslash mentioned in the previous question

2006 - 21k of working through some angst issues. Original work set in WWII Germany, also starts out underage although at least postpubertal,  problematic and historically inaccurate

2008- 59k of Pineapple Express mpreg, although I do recommend that movie to anyone who likes implied gayness in media and bizarre, funny dialogue which was a fun challenge to try to emulate in fic

76. Did you have any ideas that didn’t make the final cut of [ZM]?

I have generally managed to get everything into ZM that I wanted! One longish sequence I remember discarding (no mourning) was HL goading Billy to take Temp V with some form of misbehavior, and that being the thing that finally tips them into an overtly sexual, rather than a covertly-in-denial-kinky, relationship. It was violence that ended up as sex. But it was pretty rapey, and I didn't like it for this pairing. I prefer the version posted, where they're almost accidentally upping the ante, and kind of mutually sexually harassing each other, and it's about as consensual as it can be, at least within a private prison setting.

Plus Temp V does make an appearance towards the end of the fic, as you can tell from the WIP snippet lol.

Last night I got high and wrote a program to find all of the unused elemental symbols. It turns out there’s 585 of them and it’s much less interesting the next day.

One interesting finding: I couldn’t be bothered to generate all possible one and two letter strings, so I asked ChatGPT to write me code that would do all that for me. It worked surprisingly well!

First I want to say that I absolutely love ‘our lives, non-fiction’ it’s one of my favourite fics!

One of the reasons why I love it so much is because of all the discussions about writing. You did a great job on pointing out two different sides and I always go back to your fic when I need motivation for my own writing:)

Now because of this I got curious about your opinion:)

I just had a discussion with someone the other day. We talked about Fanfiction and while she didn’t judge me for reading it directly she also could understand why other people are judging or don’t like it, especially those people who are in the fanfics or the authors who own the characters of the fics.

Her point ‘She could understand that an author doesn’t want other people to use his characters because they will write them OOC even if it’s unintentional because the original author is the only one who knows everything about them. Or with real people like HL she could understand that they don’t like authors using their body and personality for their fics and fantasies.’

I didn’t have a lot of discussions about this and I’m not informed enough to argument against it, just enjoyed it till now and didn’t thought a lot about it.

But I had to think of your fic and the discussions in it and got curious. What is your opinion about this?

I think that’s more than any writer can ever ask of their work, and it warms my heart to know that I’ve given that to you, even by some small measure. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 😘

Secondly, I’m flattered that you want to hear my opinion, but given that so many others before me have discussed this topic with more eloquence and knowledge than I ever could, I hope you’ll forgive me for sticking to two, simplified arguments (otherwise this would get way too long).

Let’s start with the first part of your friend’s opinion:

There’s a very well-written response to that, that I could not say better myself, so I’m going to quote the LJ/tumblr post (you should absolutely read the whole thing, btw):

“Dear AotW. Fanfic is not about you. Fanfic is not about you. Fanfic is not about you.

I know you hate to hear it, dear AotW, but the story is not defined by the barriers you place around it. The moment you gave it to us, those walls broke. You may hate the fact people are imagining more to your story than what you put there. But if I were you, I'd be grateful that I got the chance to create a story that has a culture around it, a story that people want to keep talking about, reworking, remixing, living in, fantasizing about, thinking about, writing about. To quote Originalaudience on the post in question, "Nobody is forgetting that you created the characters. The existence of fanfiction really means that nobody is forgetting the characters you created."”

The thing about art is, you, as a creator, can’t put something out into the world and expect people to consume it on your terms and your terms alone. That was never, is not, and will never be the way that art works — nor should it be the intention when you create anything “original”.

You would never, for example, ask someone to stop covering a song because only the original artist truly understands the intention of the song. You would never ask a pianist not to play Beethoven’s Fifth because they are not Beethoven. You would never tell painters to stop painting their renditions of Starry Starry Night, or say the making of Ten Things I Hate About You (Taming of the Shrew AU), She’s the Man (Twelfth Night AU), Clueless (Emma AU) or Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (where Amy March was given so much depth simply because of Florence Pugh’s unique portrayal of the character) were an insult to their original authors.

So, why should fanfic be any different? Because it’s written by amateurs who don’t have big Hollywood budgets to validate their creative efforts? Because there’s a possibility of the material being explicit? Because it’s on the internet?

Or… is it because fanfic is actually written by people who, wildly enough, aren’t seeking mass market validation, and nothing is scarier or more threatening to a world that has always wanted so badly to capitalize art and permanently exclude the unwashed masses from the creation and appreciation of it than people who will, quite literally, do shit (and do it well) for free just because it makes them happy?

After all, isn’t it easier to squash a threat by injecting it with such a level of internalized shame and embarrassment that the people participating in it have to spend more time overcoming that shame/defending themselves, and less time creating/appreciating? How can we challenge the status quo if we, ourselves, are obsessed with maintaining the veil of it? 😉

Your friend’s second opinion is trickier to answer, because this is a question of personal beliefs and ethics. The ethical aspect of RPF, particularly, has long been debated, and if you’re looking for a hard ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, I won’t be able to give you that. There will always be very good arguments for both sides, and I also find myself re-examining my own opinion and participation from time to time.

But, if you want my personal opinion on why I am comfortable creating and appreciating RPF, it’s mostly because of two things:

I know (and constantly remind myself) the difference between fact and fiction. I understand that no matter who my character looks/speaks/acts like, my character is a character and not a real person, and whatever I write should never, ever reflect the way I treat a real person or interact with them.

I understand that fanfic, if consumed as intended, does not and should not affect the people they are about. I do not break the fourth wall, and I do what I can and what is in my power to keep my work in a sphere where it can only be consumed by those who actively want to find it. It is bound by fandom. I would never condone its use outside of it, or its use as any kind of justification to stereotype someone or feel entitled to the intimate details of their very real lives. I trust that readers have common sense, and we, as humans, are not so impressionable that fictional work can be used as a tool to negate our common human decency (no matter what book burners want you to believe).

Some people may not believe that these are good enough reasons, and fair enough. I have no intention of convincing anyone of the ethical rightness or wrongness of fic — that’s entirely up to them to decide, and whatever opinion they have of me and my hobby are out of my control. What is in my control is the erection of boundaries and the capacity to enforce personal red lines that help to keep this hobby from affecting anyone’s reality, and I think that’s really the most one person can do.

-He runs a toy store in the Under Realm. He and the Doll Maker are the main source of toys for the child horrors in the Under Realm. Jason and Vine are very competitive and constantly trying to 1-up each other in the toy making business. Their stores are actually across the street from each other. 

-Jason keeps the bodies of his victims (which he turns into wax figures) in the “employees only” room in his workshop. If the bodies get too old he feeds them to his snake Mr. Glutton.

-If he doesn’t like the customer that commissions toys from him he’ll give them a toy that comes to life in the middle of the night and trashes their house. He can’t kill them per Under Realm law but he can make them regret getting on his bad side.

-Jason the Toymaker despises children just as much as Laughing Jack does but he’s learned to tolerate being around them since kids are the demographic that tend to be interested in toys in the first place. 

-He, Laughing Jack and Candy Pop are the best of friends and the trio love teaming up to mess with people. Pop and LJ are some of the few horrors that can stand to be friends with Jason.

-Jason the Toymaker is A-OK with cracking jokes at the expense of other people but he’ll throw a massive temper tantrum if somebody has the audacity to make jokes at his expense. 

-He always needs his friends’ reassurance that they won’t abandon him because he has really strong trust issues. Whenever his friends leave he does that thing where he grabs onto their leg in an attempt to keep them from leaving. 

-The only children he likes are ones he considers “the chosen”. For those who don’t know, Jason’s canonical goal is to convince children to promise to play with him forever. Jason always ends up hurting/killing them because they don’t give him as much attention as he likes. 

-He tried to make Lily Kennett his chosen once and Suicide Sadie fucking set him on fire.

-The reason Jason searches for the chosen in the first place is to find a replacement for Amelia, the girl he was friends with when he was still human. There’s a reason his chosen ones tend to be girls...

1. Katsuki Bakugo and Eijiro Kirishima, My Hero Academia - I literally can’t watch Season 4 until it’s finished because my heart will Explode if I’m left on a cliffhanger involving these too!!! (Unbreakable T.T <3) I don’t usually like animes but I fell in love with his trash bastard and his soft rock boyfriend by the villain’s attack in S1. It all started when I got a TikTok because a Very Hot Bakugo cosplayer was on there. (Literally, their rendition of Bakugo is just, umph. They have appeared in my dream.). As she got more popular he started cosplaying more of Class 1-A of MHA, and I kept wondering?? What the fuck is this anime about?? Why is there an alien girl?? I soon gave in and watched the show to gain context to this thirst trap. I have so many feels for these boys, even though I don’t post on them much here, and T.T

2. Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane, Shadowhunters - I literally almost wrote my thesis because of this ship. I got into Shadowhunters because I was depressed in a foreign, racist country where I couldn’t go outside alone because old white men would corner me on the street, and everyone was talking about how Mike from Glee was kissing a guy at a wedding? Instead of partying during my study abroad trip, I gobbled down Malec content. And like who wouldn’t?? Harry Shum Jr. was playing a bisexual warlock?? And he had lines and a main character role??? An interracial couple where the characters are both POC?? Sign me up! But then I quickly fell in love with awkward gayby Alec and immediately knew how it felt to be in his shoes. (Disclaimer: I still haven’t finished the show because I don’t want their story to end, but just seeing their wedding scene????? Tears!!!!!!!!!! Both wedding scenes! I-) I just love how soft they look at each as they realize how lucky they are to be able to fall in love against the odds. T.T They deserve the world and all the warlock and shadowhunter babies and T.T This is just going to devolve into me crying so-

3. Stiles Stilinski and Derek Hale, Teen Wolf - I got into Teen Wolf to escape the hellfire that had become the Glee fandom around S3-S4. (Tbh it might have been Dereklei’s constant Sterek content on my dash that led me to give in.) Stiles was bi (through subtext) and definitely turned on by an older werewolf. What more could a depressed Gleek ask for? And listen - now looking back, Sterek is definitely gay Twilight - if Bella was snarkier, had a mental illness, and also a personality. Sterek was the ship to get me back into writing fanfiction and where I could read paranormal characters working through PTSD, ADHD, and other mental illnesses while fighting monsters and having unrealistic sex! I also love those future fics where Beacon Hills isn’t a Hellmouth anymore, and everyone’s alive and just living as one big found family. Truly, Derek deserves the world and I love him so much, and Stiles definitely agrees.

4. Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles, One Direction - If it’s a surprise that I’m a dark larrie, please read my bio. HL made me believe that love is real and exists and can last for years. I got into One Direction in 2011 through a Lilo fanfic, but as soon as I watched the Video Diaries,,,we knew. Louis has saved my life in ways I can’t describe and the songs that they’ve written for each other through their tough times are so inspiring to listen and dance to. Seeing how they’ve been dragged apart by management, Sony Entertainment, and the whole music industry as a whole even though they exist in glass closets is very disheartening to see. But their resilience that they show through their art (Only the Brave, Sweet Creature, If I Could Fly, and like so many others) is always there. If you want to fall in this rabbit hole, look at freddieismyqueen on YT and come inside lol. Larry is real.

5. Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson, Glee - the ship that got me on Tumblr! I didn’t start watching Glee until the summer before S2 came out. My whole choir was into it and I didn’t want to be “mainstream”, but Kurt was the first openly gay teen character that I saw on TV. When I heard a character played by Darren Criss, a musical theater YT legend from AVPM, I had to watch it. I ended up binging the first season with those Netflix DVDs during summer break (yeah remember when Netflix wasn’t streaming? lol). I watched every episode of that god-forsaken show the night of (or night after illegally, hidden from my parents) for that ship, and then me and my best friend would rant about it for the whole week: rinse and repeat. The episode they got together made me scream and I definitely put those Glee Rewind songs in my iPhone. (Fun fact: I used to cry at night because I wished someone like Kurt could love me like that because I heavily related to Blaine and his whole situation). I naturally stopped watching Glee the moment they broke them up and I’m still mad at their hasty attempt to marry them out of nowhere with no well-written getting together / make-up arc other than Jigsaw?? and a barn wedding?? As if Hummel would. What a trash fire. But dang, Glee fanfics have some of the dirtiest, kinkiest, forbidden fics out there. If you were ever on Glee_Kink_Meme on LJ, you know.

6. Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter - the ship that started it all, the big kahuna, the ultimate enemies to lovers for 90s kids. Drarry got me into the fandom world in middle school, where I basically lived on FFN and LJ while pretending to do my homework. I used to get ready every day by watching the same playlist of “The best Harry Potter videos on Youtube!” (curated by Ariel333Lindt, who was the only queer person I knew but lived in Eastern Europe, where I could see two gay people kiss and fall in love in the safety of my room through badly photoshopped videos. Please check out that playlist). I just love how each fic is a microcosm where they have to construct how magical systems work, the backstories of pureblood families, creatures, or just wizarding culture for the end goal of having Drarry fuck and fall in love! I love redemption arcs that take 200k to achieve, I love dark!Harry takes, and every single different damn take on Narcissa, Pansy, and Millicent - because deep down that’s the writer trying to come to turns on whether or not Draco should be redeemed to get together with Harry. (I mean we all know they’re obsessed with each other, book 6 anyone?) I feel like Drarry fics have the best worldbuilding and characterizations of these characters, and I just love those moments when Draco and Harry take a moment to take a breath together and realize how far they’ve come. No one else can understand how it felt to be the pariah or the chosen one, they both interacted with Voldemort the most, and they have the most history together. They should have gotten together! But I mean the author’s dead, am I right?

So that was a lot! Those are all the ships that impacted me that I still participate with. They have shaped me for better or worse, and have made me learn more about who I am and what I want (or don’t want) in a relationship. This was the most fun essay I’ve ever written on NyQuil!
