I tried to play hollow knight but got like to the first boss and was bad at it. any tips for when I pick it back up

Hmm… I’ll assume you mean False Knight. If you find the fight too difficult, there might be a way to get out of the arena once the fight starts… Maybe try smacking some walls if that’s what you want.

As a general tip, it’s okay to take your time. Don’t get greedy with hits. Just be careful, focus on dodging, and learn the patterns. Identify the openings when it’s safe to get a hit or two in. Also identify when you have time to Focus. If you have the SOUL, heal up when you can, but don’t try to heal if it’s not safe. You’ll probably just get interrupted, taking more damage and wasting SOUL.

(Specific tips for False Knight below the cut.)

For False Knight specifically, you’re usually safe to Focus once whenever he gets downed. Once you’ve Focused, hit him as much as you can to refill on SOUL before he gets back up. And for getting hits on him, you can usually give him a little swipe when he jumps to you. Just once, then you gotta get out of there before he whacks you. When he has his tantrum and makes the rock things fall down, your best bet is hiding on the edge of the arena. You can hit the rocks back at him, so do that when they fall close enough to you.

I Beat NKG Today, so Here's Some of My Tips for Fighting Him!!

AHH I'M SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW- I FINALLY BEAT NIGHTMARE KING GRIMM TODAY!! I felt like I should maybe share my tips for the battle that I noticed worked best for me, and maybe help someone else!

1: Charms & Equipment

Apologies about the quality of these first few images, using my phone to take a picture of my Switch. But the charms that I used for the fight were:

Dashmaster, for dashing more often during the fight

Unbreakable / Fragile Heart, for obvious reasons (more health)

Quick Focus, to heal faster

Soul Catcher, to gain Soul faster

Coiled Nail

8 Masks, which is increased to 10 with Unbreakable / Fragile Heart

2 Soul Vessels

Shadow Dash & Shade Soul - I never used Descending Dark nor Abyss Shriek.

2: Attacking & Healing

First of all: DO NOT GET GREEDY WITH DAMAGE, NOR HEALING. There WILL be opportunities to attack and heal, but - similar to regular Grimm - you will NOT be winning this fight through brute force or constantly trying to heal. The minute you try to get greedy with either is the minute you will lose.

The best opportunities to attack are during the Fire Bat attack, and during the Flame Pillar attack. For the Fire Bats, you need to jump and dash right through the middle of the bats, and you may be able to hit him once or twice.

For the Flame Pillars, do NOT dash through the flames, simply walk towards Grimm, and try to jump and attack him once or twice from below before continuing to walk past him. None of his other attacks provide enough opportunity to attack unless you are extremely skilled.

For healing, the best opportunities to heal are during the Spike attack, Grimm's bat form, and just after the Flame Pillar attacks. Quick Focus will provide just enough time for you to heal once or twice during the Spikes and after the Flame Pillars, but you'll be able to heal 3 masks when Grimm is in bat form.

For healing during the Flame Pillar attack, you'll need to do much the same as you'll do when you're attacking, and in many cases you'll be able to attack and heal in the same move. Once four Flame Pillars have been avoided, you have a brief amount of time to pause and heal once or twice, depending on what Grimm's next move is (the Flame Bats or Pufferfish offer enough time to heal twice, but the Drill Attack and Dash Attacks only offer one).

3: Grimm's Attacks & Dodging

Pufferfish - Dodge the same as you would during the fight with Grimm's normal form

Drill Attack (Diving down and across with a flame trail) - Double-jump above Grimm as he's diving downwards: you can dash away if you're high enough

Dash Attack (Dashing towards you, then leaping up and emitting flames) - He ALWAYS does this attack first. Dash through him, then move back to roughly the same spot you stood before you jumped, as this area will normally be out of range of the fire

Flame Pillars - Just walk away from the pillars

Spikes - Dodge the same as you would when fighting Grimm in his normal form

Flame Bats - Jump and dash through the middle of them.

It may take... Quite a few tries before you're able to get the hang of the fight. There's probably a more effective way to defeat him, but this is how I did it, and it worked for me quite well! The main takeaway from this fight, for me, is that patience is key. Being greedy with heals and attacks will get you nowhere, you have to wait for the perfect moments to make your move. But, I hope this guide somewhat helps!! ^^

Refreshed their design and reference sheet a tiny bit :] Still unsure about the pupils, but we'll see if I keep them. They're meant to be barely visible anyways so I can just not draw them if I don't feel like it

ID start: A reference sheet for a human version of The Hollow Knight/Pure Vessel from Hollow Knight. Most of their skin is pitch black save for their white face, which has freckles and a small mole under their left eye. Their skin turns black right under their bone cheeks, and combined with their horns makes their face resemble the shape of their mask in-game. Their white hair is long and kept in a high ponytail. Their long bangs almost completely cover the right side of their face. On the left side of the reference sheet there are some close-up of their body parts and text describing the following traits: They're digitigrade, with long elf ears, sharp claws, and teeth with two sets of fangs, three spurs on the back of their forearms, a short spiky tail and almost pitch black eyes with only a small dark blue pupil visible. They have no true tongue and use void tendrils as a substitute. When shined on, their pupils widen and get brighter. They're wearing a white shirt with frilly popped up collar and frilly puffy sleeves ending with cuffs, and the sleeves have buttons around the spikes on their arm to make it easier to put on. The shirt is embroidered with various light blue and red floral patterns on the shoulders and around the collar. They're wearing dark blue pants with a blue cloth belt tied to the lest side and black leather shoes modified for their digitigrade stance. Behind their left ear, they have a small white flower with a pink hand red centre and two small green leaves. On the left of them are labelled colour swatches, and above that are their pronouns, "They/them it/its". End ID.

How do you draw the metal shine on your animatronics?

Honestly?

I have no frigging idea! Couldn't start to explain what I'm doing, as I just draw and add shine and shading as I work. At least if yer talking about my robot shine in my sketches.

But alright, let's see if I can try and make examples for this..

As said above, I usually shade and shine as I go, so leaving this one mostly blank was bit of a toll on me.

But yeh, just a flat sketch of our favourite Sun guy just happy to be here

Alright, this is a very simple example for how I do most shine on areas meant to be a light colour. Can't be too drastic and risk making it look like the casing is supposed to be darker.

Best way I can explain the "shine lines", hmmm.. I'm not smart enough to have the words, I guess. I just learn from observing art and things around me to try get an idea what gives the right effect with the tools given..

Let's try with more detailing by adding soft shading.

I really do just add these things based on feel and vibe, as I go.

Do pay attention that whether it's metal shine or shading on non-metal parts, it rarely goes all the way to the art lines. Gotta preserve white space for effect, it helps giving the needed illusion of light when ye only got pencil to work with. Is the best way I can put any instructions on this.

Of course matters on the shape and desired effect on what you are drawing. There are many ways to draw shading and shine on different materials, for the right feel. This is just some basic and simple examples I can think of to try and illustrate.

I'm sure you can find plenty of better tutorials out there to explain this concept in deeper detail than I'm able to.

I never really looked it up myself, I just experimented with my techniques as I went. Even trying to set it up in separate parts have me unsure if this gonna help ya understand how I do my work.

Best I can tell ya, is I mostly tribute the backgrounds of Hollow Knight some credit for my shading techniques today. Some arts done attempting to copy the style of the game's backgrounds and detailing gave me some pointers to work from.

So, yeah, that's the best I can give ya on the subject of how I do metal shine in pencil. Best I can offer is ya look up examples that work for you, to try draw from as you figure out your own technique and vibes for it.

So here they are!

They're mostly Earthy and pink tones, with their eye colours ranging from green to orange with different saturation and hue - including grey and almost white and black eyes. Blue are mostly only possible when there's white over them or some sort of loss of pigment like in albinism. I mostly took inspo from earthworms and hammerhead worms for their markings and colours.

The most common, or at least most recognisable, species of wyrm in my AU. Second largest and highly adptable, these guys dig extensive tunnels spanning kilometres across and deep underground. They're essential to the ecosystem as their old tunnels provide safety for smaller organisms in the harsh wastelands.

They've got 6 eyes, each one between their six front mandibles. When they open them their eyes automatically close, though it isn't a problem as their vision is already poor.

Although they're capable of eating plants they're almost exclusively carnivores, specialising in hunting other colossal prey - including other wyrms. They hunt and fight by holding their prey down using their hind and front limbs and biting them with their powerful jaws.

They're known to be territorial and violent, the kingdoms made by wyrms having a reputation for being very war-focused.

They have litters of 1 to 13 young and are known for being very protective and highly attentive parents, rearing their young until they're old enough to survive on their own.

There was once a time where wyrms and their kingdoms were plenty, but with their rapidly dwindling numbers they're now a rare sight to behold - and wyrm-led kingdoms an even rarer one. Although mostly a solitary species the fear of extinction brought some of them together, and now it's not that unheard of for wyrms to stay in small family groups, with some of them choosing to shed their former bodies to live in larger groups together. These wyrm villages make it easier to find a mate and to find enough food, though because of their inherent territorial nature they're still not that common despite their benefits.

Fun fact: Parts of the clothes are inspired by Hollow Knight.

oh and pro tip, i use a ceramic plate to mix my paints, doesn’t suck the oil out of my paint and easy to mix on
