lady of many, many, many, many faces.
made that drawing after making this ☝️ height shart right here.
thought to myself how absurd it was that nightmare has so many designs to himself alone.
I don't think I know other characters that have this many drastic changes done to them just in the span of their plotline. like y'know, sometimes characters do change from certain events, maybe get injuries, different clothes or haircut, or go through arcs that change their personality.
but nightmare here literally changes to entirely different characters as the plot goes on, design wise and personality wise.
and it's super fitting for him, cuz he's the one character that puts the theme of identity on the forefront. he spends his entire life searching for what it means to be 'nightmare', so he goes through a thousand different identities to find the one that truly defines him. but at his core, he's still the same nightmare he's ever been.
even after becoming king and becoming everything he thinks he ever wanted to be (rich, powerful, ect.), he's still unhappy with himself because he spent all this time rejecting his actual true self in favor of being somebody that wasn't (and could never be) him.
what truly defines nightmare is that he is bound to no limitation on what he could be, but still choses to put those limitations on himself.
what truly defines nightmare is nothing, and being nothing scares him to death, so he would rather be everybody else but himself, not once considering that maybe he could've changed that nothing into anything he wants, but fear just blinds him that much.
the irony of it all is that all he truly wanted at the end of the day was to be his own person, to be someone outside of sans's shadow, but only ended up jumping from sans's shadow to mettaton's. the only way he found to not be a clone of sans was to become a clone of someone else.
damn... maybe the true nightmare was the friends we made along the way.
#his eye switching sides wasn't intentional btw it was a mistake 😓#all of that just got me thinking about his evolution as a character from way back when I made him in 2019 to now.#I go crazy thinking about how much he changed over the years. but when I look at his core components-#-he stayed the exact same.#there's a few references in the different masks.#if u recognize some of these I'm literally kissing u.#there is actual nightmare sans in there. like the og badly written one.#hey remember when all of this was about some apples or whatever? how did we get here?#nightmare sans#HOME#utmv#undertale au#sans au#undertale#undertale oc#dreamtale#🖍️

what matters most - pyeon sang-wook x reader
pairing: pyeon sangwook x reader
summary: He's avoiding you, but he won't admit that. You also won't press him on it.
word count: 1147
warnings: smoking
a/n: This is so embarrassing... i originally wrote this as a request without realizing I wrote about the wrong character. Still wanted to post this anyway because I like it. it happens to the best of us
masterlist
He’d been too focused on watching his cigarette smoke make designs in the air to notice you’d been standing at the bottom of the stairs for some time. He sat on the top step with his legs spread, grimacing. Then again, he always had some sort of a frown on his face. Like he was constantly deep in thought. Except this time, he actually was.
Sangwook stiffened at your whistle. He finally noticed you standing at the bottom step, arms crossed and looking up at him unexpectedly.
“You must be pretty deep in thought to not notice I’ve been standing here,” you said, head tilting to the side as if to examine him further.
He looked down at you, unimpressed. You looked small from where he was sitting.
When he didn’t end up answering, you pressed your lips together in frustration. You hadn’t known him for a long time, but you had almost died together on numerous occasions. You learned his tell pretty quickly.
You climbed the remaining steps and took your seat at his side like usual, dusting off your legs and folding your hands together in your lap.
“So,” you said casually. “Are you hiding from me?”
He quickly sucked in the remainder of his cigarette before dropping it on the step below him, smudging it out with his shoe. You watched him do this with some sort of innate fascination - he didn’t like how you always watched him like that. Like you were expecting some grand maneuver, or something.
Eventually he realized that the silence was too overbearing for even him. He’d always been the listener between the two of you. He almost laughed at the realization. He’d become uncomfortable with the silence he used to rely on. It seems like it had been that way ever since the two of you had met.
“There’s nothing wrong,” he said. He seemed to hesitate before adding, “I’m not hiding from you.”
“I hope that’s true,” you continued. “Then again… you’re not a good liar.”
Sangwook huffed, slightly embarrassed at how you knew him so well already. “You think you know me so well when we’ve only known each other for such a short time.”
You sighed and bumped your shoulder with his. “Even now, you’re being more prickly. So that means I’m right.” You looked at him expectedly.
Another minute of silence. This time, Sangwook was determined not to break his resolve.
You stretched your foot out in front of you, if anything to distract you from the awkward tension. “I don’t think you’ll tell me what’s wrong,” you admitted. “And I don’t really want to ask.”
So don’t, he bit back his words.
You contemplated for a moment. What kind of words could you say to a man like him without… scaring him off? You chuckled dryly at the thought of it. You two had faced a handful of grotesque, disturbing monsters and yet the thing to scare him would be vulnerability. That was okay - it scared you too. It’s why you wouldn’t ask.
“Do you think…” you started, biting the inside of your cheek. “If none of this happened. I mean, if monsters didn’t show up and it wasn’t the end of the world as we know it…” You hesitated before continuing. “Do you think if you saw me on the street, you’d notice?”
He turned to you, confused, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“I mean if we met under different circumstances,” you continued. Your demeanor seemed relaxed, but in reality, you wanted to hit yourself for even bringing it up. “Do you think we would’ve met?”
Sangwook turned away from you then, regretting that he smudged out his cigarette. Now his hands had nothing to do. “...No. We wouldn’t have.”
You frowned.
“We would never find ourselves in the same place,” he explained.
“...What do you mean?” You asked.
“You…” He didn’t know exactly how to say what he was thinking. “You’re too pretty.”
A smile grew on your face slowly. Then suddenly, you laughed- maybe in astonishment. “What?”
“Don’t laugh,” he chided, but more so in a playful manner than a strict one.
“I’m not!” You cleared your throat, biting back your chuckle. “I’m not. I just… wasn’t expecting that. We wouldn’t have met because I’m too pretty?”
“Yes,” he replied simply.
Another moment of silence passed between you.
“...How would that mean we wouldn’t have met?”
He shifted his sitting position. His hands felt clammy - he shouldn’t have said anything at all. But then again, you had the tendency to disarm him at times. “Because it’s true,” he doubled down. “You sure as hell wouldn’t be found anywhere near a construction site.”
You looked at him in confusion.
Sangwook shook his head with finality. “We wouldn’t have met.”
You took your bottom lip between your teeth and shrugged. “I don’t know,” you chuckled awkwardly. “I’m pretty good with a hammer.”
He turned and looked at you then - really looked at you. He watched as your eyes widened at his intense gaze. How you sort of seemed to lean towards him unconsciously, trusting. You waited for him to say something but nothing came to his mind. Everything he wanted to say was right in front of him.
But who was he to admit that?
“It’s useless to talk about things like that,” he said. “It’s wishful thinking.”
“I thought you liked me because of my optimism,” you said slowly, trying to lighten the mood but unable to keep the disappointment from your tone. “Do you really think that?” You asked, voice quiet. “That we’re really so different?”
He didn’t answer.
You huffed and looked away. “That’s really surprising. We’ve seen each other covered in sweat and blood, and you’re still thinking about status…” You picked at your fingernails. “You’ve seen what I can do. I’ve seen what you can do. Isn’t that what really matters?” You didn’t even care you were being a bit hypocritical. You thought he knew you better than that. Or - that you knew him better than that.
Sangwook couldn’t think of an argument for what you had just said, even if he tried. He just stared at you in surprise.
Suddenly, you pushed yourself up from where you were sitting. “I’m sorry for bothering you…” You didn’t really mean it. And he knew that.
Bother me more, he wanted to say. Bother me all the time.
“But I hope you know…” you started to say. The way the sun was setting made you look like you were glowing. It made Sangwook’s chest feel tight. “..That I would’ve noticed you before all of this. Even if it were just in passing.”
He watched as you turned away and descended the stairs. He didn’t follow you, or call out to you. Because that’s not the kind of man he was. And you weren’t his.
Even if you thought you were.

I love your sang wook fic ˚ʚ♡ɞ˚ may I request a part two to 'what matters most'? maybe sang wook trying to fight his feelings and he failing to contain his panic when reader gets hurt?
not a hero - Sweet Home
╰ pairing﹕pyeon sang-wook x reader
╰ summary ﹕ you sneak out of green home to find yu-ri more inhalers. when you return, the man who has assigned yourself to you protective duty does not take well to this.
╰ word count : 2,494
︵ warnings : cursing, injury, awkwardness
︵ a/n : this is definitely more of a dialogue heavy piece but i'm trying to work out writing Sang-wook more in-depth and internally. thank you for the compliment!
masterlist
Yu-ri had always been kind to you. And you in kind. That was why it was easy for Yu-ri to confess that she had been stressed because she was asthmatic - and on her last inhaler. The conversation had died, but your mind had been made up. She had saved your life plenty of times - so you said had no second thoughts.
Sang-wook did, though. Even though he had no idea what you were planning, he could tell it was something based on that determined look in your eye.
"What are you planning?" He said, sitting at your side while you had been cleaning a gun. The do-it-yourself graves were the only other people keeping you company. This place had become a good place for solitude for you both. When it wasn't here, it was the stairwell.
"Nothing," you said, humming. "What makes you think I'm planning something?"
He narrowed his eyes. "You're easy to read. Never would have lasted in my line of work."
You snorted. The reference to his underground dealings had become comfortable, and you were thankful he was being more open to you. But you partly believed maybe that was because you could be batshit crazy and a little bit of fraud and assault wouldn't push you away.
"Just thinking what everyone is thinking, I guess. How we're gonna deal with the water situation," you explained. "Eun-hyuk mentioned going to the parking lot and seeing if there's another way out of there. Maybe he'll send a recon team." Your eyes lifted to his. "You in?"
"Hell no," he answered.
"Suit yourself," you said, shrugging and pushing a piece of your gun back where it went with your thumb. It clicked in smoothly. You knew that if you ended up going, he would do. That's how it happened, simple as that.
That night, you carefully rose from your sleeping bag beside Sang-wook's, careful not to wake him. It was anxiety-inducing because the man somehow slept on his back, arms crossed, eyes closed. It felt as if they could open at any time and catch you in action.
Luckily, though, you made sure to ask him for helping with many numerous tasks around the living space so he'd be more tired than usual. He hadn't awoken when you stood up, or closed the door behind you.
After stopping by a storage room and getting the backpack you put together and hid, you lifted a heavy box from the barricade in front of the shutter and placed it close by, enough so you could make a way to get through.
"You should be taking that thug with you, rather than going alone." The old man, Gil-seob stood a few feet away. His arms were crossed as he watched you move various items away. "What am I supposed to tell the others if you don't return?"
You looked over your shoulder, thinking for a moment. Then came up with a good response. You pointed at him playfully. "That I died valiantly."
He rolled his eyes and started hobbling back into the control room so he could lift the shutter. You could do it yourself, but you didn't want to risk damaging the mechanisms used to keep it shut. He waited for your call. Asking him for help had been a choice indeed but he came around, in the end. He had come to care for Yu-ri deeply, as if she was his own daughter. You supposed that could happen if you spent enough time around someone, much less if they were taking care of you constantly.
You gave the signal and the shutter began to lift. You cringed at the loud sound. Within a few short minutes, someone was bound to show up and question what it had been - and soon realize where that you had left.
"Hey," You said, stepping over the barricade and peeking up over back at Gil-seob. "Thank you, sir."
He nodded. "Come back alive."
𓁺
Sang-wook wasn't concerned with your absence in the makeshift bed beside him as much as he was concerned that he had slept so well - his arms even hurt since he had used muscles he didn't normally do. He complained the way through it, which made it better. It just meant that he was going to give you a stubborn time today because he had heeded every last one of your silly requests yesterday.
When he stepped into the lobby, he expected to see you, as always, taking guard near the barricade and sharpening a knife, or pacing back and forth the length of the hall. But you weren't there.
He looked around further. In the convenience store, in the children's area.
It's when he came across Eun-hyuk in the control room that his stomach dropped.
The boy with the flannel and glasses turned around, stating very simply that you were gone.
It didn't register at first.
"Someone opened the shutter last night," he explained. "I'm guessing it's because there was something out there that had to be retrieved."
Sang-wook rushed forward, looking at the crackling security cameras. No sign of your face anywhere. He turned back to Eun-hyuk. "You're sure?"
Eun-hyuk dipped his head down into a nod. "Yes. I don't think the shutter was opened by one person, though. There was help."
Sang-wook realized that the boy was referring to him as a possible suspect. "You think I opened the shutter?" He said, voice scaling on edgy.
"I think there's a non-zero possibility that you did. It's safe to assume that because of your... closeness."
Closeness. What a word.
Sang-wook turned on his heel. If you were gone, he had to go after you. Simple as that. He didn't care if Eun-hyuk thought he opened the door or not - he needed to get to you.
"But you probably didn't," Eun-hyuk said.
This made Sang-wook slow and eventually stop.
"Knowing you, you would have gone with. Am I right?" Eun-hyuk didn't smile at the sight of Sang-wook glancing over his shoulder, but he sure did feel pride about being right. "I thought so. So it couldn't have been you."
Sang-wook kept his eyes on the ground. "There has never been a good enough reason to risk lives here to go outside." Much less yours, which he would argue was much more valuable than some particular residents off the top of his head. You were a smart person - reckless at times, but you were smart - you never would've gone outside unless it was a last resort. Or for someone you cared for deeply.
His eyes widened. He didn't stop when Eun-hyuk called out to him again.
𓁺
"Where are they?"
Yu-ri looked up at the man standing in front of her. She was sorting through the remaining medical supplies they had - something she had done plenty of times, but it seemed everything continued to get jumbled up repeatedly. Plus, it gave her something to do. "What do you mean?"
Sang-wook said your name. "Where are they? Did you send them for something? Ask for something?"
Yu-ri blinked, surprised at his harshness. "No, I... I don't know what you're talking about." She stood, wiping her sweating hands on her jeans. "You can't... You can't find them?" She said, trailing off. "I thought they'd been with you."
"They're not," Sang-wook snapped, fists clenched in his coat pockets. They ached and itched. He forced himself to take a breath. "Do you know where they went?"
"No... No, I..." Yu-ri said, but then began to think about anything that might've inspired you to leave. "Oh... Oh, shit. I didn't--- I didn't mean to--- I was only talking about it, not---"
"What? What is it?" Sang-wook stepped forward, resting the urge to shake this woman by her shoulders for answers. The longer this took, the longer it meant he had to find you before something horrible happened.
"---My inhalers," Yu-ri said. "I'm on my last one. I mentioned it. Just in passing. But they must've... I didn't know they'd take it seriously."
"Do you know where the closest place for those are? A convience store? A medical center?" He fired off question after question.
"Yes, there's..." Yu-ri started, before her attention shifted to something over Sang-wook's shoulder. Her eyes widened before she breathed deep with relief and said your name.
Sang-wook turned around to catch the tail end of Yu-ri jogging towards you, immediately enveloping you in a big hug.
You winced. "Careful--- Careful, Yu-ri," You laughed, grateful yourself to be back in one piece. You slid the backpack off your shoulder and zipped it open with one hand.
When Yu-ri pulled away from the hug, she looked down at its contents. At least four or five inhalers were inside, enough to last for a reasonable amount of time. She looked at you, surprised. "You--- You idiot," she said through her teeth. "You could've been killed."
You patted her on the back and threw and arm over her shoulder looking up at Sang-wook, who had just been watching the interaction with an unreadable expression. You stared at him, trying to convey your apologies through your eyes, but he was still and steadfast in his harshness.
"You're hurt." Sang-wook stated.
Yu-ri blinked, taking one look at you and how you were a bit pale and clutching your side. "What happened?" She said, immediately lifting up your shift.
A big bruise took up the side of your torso, right up underneath your breastbone and down your hip. Blue, purple, and beat-up. "I only took a bit of a rough fall."
"A bit of a rough fall?" Yu-ri repeated, eyes widened. "This is more than a bit."
"Nothing that won't heal up on its own, though," You argued. "My ankle hurts, though. I think I might've sprained it. Could you take a look?"
She nodded, ushering you to the dedicated first-aid room. You glanced over at Sang-wook before going inside.
𓁺
"He was worried sick, you know."
You looked down at Yu-ri while she wrapped your ankle. It was sprained. There wasn't any ice to be put on it, so all you could do for now was give it rest and take the over-the-counter painkillers Yu-ri handed to you.
"Yeah," you said in an exhale. "I know."
"You shouldn't have gone out there," she stated. Pressed the bandage down so it stuck. "But... Thank you. You and Mr. Gil-seob."
Your eyes softened. Of course she knew he had a hand in helping you. "Don't mention it. Please. You've done more for me than I can ever pay you back for."
Yu-ri smiled. "Just... don't do it again, then. That can be your payment."
You shook the pills still in your hand. Then reached for your bottle of water and took them.
When Yu-ri stepped out for the room to dispose of the dirty towels and other tools, she gave a once-glance to Sang-wook standing outside, leaning against the wall. You could see him barely over the edge of the door.
He came inside almost in a bow, or a lean. Then he took his place in front of you, hands in his pockets. You could imagine they were white-tight.
It became clear he would not speak first.
"...sorry," you mumbled.
"...Sorry?" Sang-wook repeated. "You're sorry?"
You chewed the inside of your bottom lip. You'd thought plenty about getting out of this place, but you didn't think hard enough about coming back. You knew it would be this hard, so you decided to just wing it. You regret that now.
You lifted your bandaged ankle up. "All better. See?"
"You could've died."
You sighed and lowered your leg. Pouting, almost. "I know."
"You could've been fucking tortured by those things. Did you ever think that it might not have been quick? Huh!?" His loud shout at the end made you startled. You were certain everyone outside heard - the door was only cracked.
"I had to do it," You stated. "Or Yu-ri might have died soon."
"Or she would have been just fine."
Frustration bubbled in your chest. "I'm sorry for disappearing on you, okay? I didn't want to lie to you. And I didn't. I just knew you'd want to come with me. I didn't want to risk your life, too."
"Is your life really so disposable to you?" Sang-wook asked, a look of disgust crossing his features. "Something that you can just give away if the price is high enough? You want to die a hero?"
You said nothing.
"You aren't going to die a hero. Nobody can die a hero anymore. We have to do what's best for us. Do you understand that? Do you think any of these people would have done the same for you?!"
Your eyes held a stern expression, one that almost made him take a step back. But he held steadfast.
"No," you said. "Some of them wouldn't have. But you..." You slowly shifted off of the bed and stepped into his space. "You would've, wouldn't you?"
He shook his head, but you continued.
"And it would've killed you. Because you're..." You tapped his shoulder for emphasis. "A strong, big guy. That's what I admire about you. But you would've died because of it. And would've gotten me killed."
You smiled softly. "I'm quick. Quiet. In-and-out. Too fast, sometimes. That's why I fell," you gestured to your side. "But you know what?...I wouldn't have done something like this before. I would've been too scared. But then I've seen you, and how good you are. And... I thought... Well, who the hell am I not to try and be the same way, you know?" Then you frowned. "So I don't like hearing you say that. About being a hero. It's not about that. And you know it's not like that. You're just making an excuse. It's not a good look on you, either. You know. Pretending it's not just because you were really scared to lose me."
He searched you desperately for something to say - you always seemed to have the right thing to say, at the right time, with the right movement. He admired that about you.
"That's because I feel the same way about you," you said, a subtle blush creeping up your cheeks. You looked up at him through your eyelashes. You feel your stomach roll - once they might've been butterflies. Now they were just instincts. "And that we're alike in a lot of ways, so I know what you're feeling. At least, I think so."
He nodded. Once, twice.
Just as your eyes began to close, and he leaned forward, and your hand came up to his elbow and his hand raised to brush your hair back---
Jae-heon opened the door with a tray of food, glasses fallen lower on his nose than usual.
You practically jumped away from Sang-wook, cheeks blazing red.
Jae-heon blinked, looking between the two of you. "I'm sorry, am I... interrupting?"
"Uh, no," you said half-breathless. "Did you need something?"
"I... thought you'd be hungry, so I brought you something." Jae-heon held up the tray. He stepped forward and slid it onto the table. Then he nodded to Sang-wook. "It's good that you're here, actually. I'd like your help with something, if that's alright."
Burning in his own right, Sang-wook dipped his head down to you, not quite meeting your eyes as he began to follow Jae-heon out.
"Sang-wook!" You exclaimed before he stepped over the threshold entirely.
He looked at you expectantly.
"I kind of lied before," you said, a small smile peeking up the side of your mouth. "You probably handle most things with a good look."
He chuckled and rolled his eyes, hand on the wood of the edge of the door as he walked out. The tension in his air quickly defused with your comment, and he was grateful for it.
