Going to say this now even though I barely post here::::: Adaptations are never meant to be a 1:1 recreation of the original source material. The goal is never to recreate the exact same experience in a different format, the whole point of remaking something in a different format is to make something new.

I don’t understand why people are out here acting like the new Netflix ATLA walked onscreen, shot the original with a 44 and declared itself the new ATLA. I’m not saying you can’t criticise anything about it or any other adaptation, I just think a lot of people need to remember that an adaptation that gives you the same experience and explores the exact same themes and doesn’t elaborate on or look at things in different angles would be utterly pointless.

I didn't have much of any specific expectations for this but I REALLY liked it! The ~zombie effects are very cool & it did more than I was expecting with the element of vampirism (was mostly just expecting the sexual stuff so that's.. not saying terribly much) & I was surprised/delighted by some plot beats in the middle right out of the original Dracula novel. A really fun time!

addition: i was bitching a little abt the story earlier but overall did like it and got gradually more irritated seeing reviews talk about 'the naked vampire girl is the best part' or 'the script takes the details of the 'science' so seriously 🙄' and it PISSED ME OFF!!! like 1. the movie is definitely sexist but there's more interesting things going on than that and 2. if a self-serious story w fantastical elements is too much for you maybe... don't watch science fiction movies lol

It's kinda funny seeing actual productions with smaller teams get trapped in this cage of fandom pandering that makes it so they can't change anything about their series at all without huge amounts of backlash. Like nothing can evolve if people have gotten any amount of attached to it. I think the best/most well known example of this currently is Hazbin Hotel (sorry to reveal that I watched it specifically to dissect this exact stuff I'm talking about, and yes, I pirated it) and the general Vivziepop CU, so many decisions in that series were very obviously made in order to keep up with fandom expectations and demands and the show suffered for it. Like, even aside from being really unfunny, fanservice for oldheads eats up so much of the series that every part of the plot borders on incoherent. Watching hazbin hotel feels like a "best moments" clip comp of a better show. And there are many other reasons it probably isn't worth watching but in complete isolation as a phenomenon wrt webseries, it's such a good case study in fandom and fanon overtaking a project that started out as a loose handful of OC concepts.

I think this becomes a lot more obvious if you also watch Helluva Boss (god forbid), I think its issues are a lot more direct because the series comes out in real time and has no core plot outside of a fanfic tier slow burn romance. Before that kicks in, it is like, the obviously better version of this whole universe(I still don't think it's that good and it's mostly pretty unfunny as well), it feels like it exists in a world instead of being a lot of self contained plot points and conversations. But THAT goes down the drain pretty quickly, I've lost interest in it as a Webseries Phenomenon but everything I've seen is suffering from the exact same fanservice-first issue hazbin does. And like, this model is successful because, well, fans like being serviced, but it's also totally unsustainable as a storytelling model. This kind of stuff survives off being able to provide moments to squee over in perpetuity, so it has to degrade its previous plot points and decisions constantly in order to maintain a status quo that generates drama. Like they have the same obvious conflicts forever and ever because there isn't any other substance to the series and characters and nothing new can ever happen especially if it would fuck with hazbin hotel. It's very bizarre

The thing about the last “Camelot” revival is that they made so many changes, it begs the question why they just didn’t write a whole new show from scratch. You have to remember “Camelot” isn’t just based off Arthurian more it’s an adaptation of T.H. White’s “The Once & Future King” a doorstop per of a novel (it’s actually 4 different books published as one volume” that is billed as “the world’s greatest fantasy classic”. And it’s only 1 of 2 adaptations - the other being Disney’s “The Sword in the Stone”. So I can totally understand why critics and fans didn’t enjoy it at all.

I'll be honest I don't really think the changes are THAT major, like structurally it's hitting a lot of similar beats especially since they had to keep the same song story beats. Especially when you consider the show before Sorkin and Sher ever got involved at all was a constantly evolving beast (to me there's a world of difference between the movie Camelot and the 2008 Lincoln Center production that leaned more into the goofy camp aspects. Hello Morgan Le Fay who loves chocolate lol!) I've seen people argue that maybe they should have never tried to change the show with a new creative team, and while I've certainly turned the argument over in my head, I think I ultimately land on, Lerner and Lowe kept reworking it in their life time, I actually think it's kind of in the spirit of the show to keep working on it. It's actually one of my favourite things about this show, that no two versions are alike! Even when a change isn't my cup of tea I really like seeing where they take this material. I think that's what makes theater special, that you can have stuff like this where the work is never done. (Like Hadestown or Chess!) I don't think there is a "definitive version of Camelot the musical".

But with that being said, different versions means it'll cater to different tastes, I do understand that the new script has a distinctly modern, sarcastic, veryyy quippy, voice to it that is not like the original writer's style (and yeah you feel it when the original work IS included) (honestly I don't even like when they throw in jokes in the vein of "stop singing that stupid song" like it's a golden age musical. Plz.) Not to mention I think the new script mines slightly different themes out of the show and if someone doesn't like it I can't say I blame them 🤷🏻‍♀️ look I'm a Hadestown NYTW version truther so I can understand the plz don't touch my baby mindset haha
