Sound at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015)
Tumblr media
This is my 5th trip to the Biennale di Venezia, hunting for signs of sound. Happily, with every returning visit there seem to be more and more sonic interventions, and this year sound feels embedded throughout.
It's interesting to notice recurring themes that seem to crop up throughout the mass of works from all over the globe. The 54th Biennale featured an unusal amount of glitter balls; at the 55th I saw alot of ladders. Is this coincidental or symbolic?
At the 55th Biennale, sound art had a very visible presence - making a statement. This year, sound was dotted around… part of a whole… contributing not dominating. I must admit, for a sound art fanatic like me, this was a little dissapointing.
If you've never been to the Biennale, here's the set up:
The whole of Venice is taken over by art. In May, the super rich arrive in their super yachts for the press view - revolting displays of wealth allowed by the sad corruption of the officials. As they descend their mega boats to admire the magic of the arts, the magic of the city is destroyed as views of the sea are blocked by their obscenely huge yachts and the sinking city sinks further.
This year, the Biennale was curated by Okwui Enwezor, important partly because of his role as Artistic Director of Documenta 11, where he enacted his committment to supporting developing countries to present work on the world art stage.
The Biennale takes place in two main venues - the Giardini (gardens) and the Arsenale (old naval base), but throughout the city every gallery, church and empty building houses a treasure hunt of satellite exhibitions. It takes at least 5 x 8 hour days to see the whole lot, and you're exhausted by the end, but it's THE PLACE to be excited and inspired.
In the below, I've documented all the sound works I found, in an attempt to share the experience.

Tumblr media
You spent all day at the Sanctum with Stephen. He didn't leave your side for even a minute. He contacted the police to let them know that he had found out what had happened and that in fact it was a situation that he needed to resolve and let them know that he found you and that you were safe. He ignored the police's requests for you to go to the police station to testify that morning, after all you had more important things to do, but the question was how to convince you to do it.
You were sitting in an armchair by the fireplace in the main hall of the Sanctum and it was past 8pm when Stephen came over to sit beside you.
"He's coming for me tonight." You said staring into the fire.
Stephen stared at the purple magic ring on your finger, it had been invisible most of the day, but now it began to grow stronger and glowed menacingly.
Stephen lowered his head staring at his hands then sighed and stared at you "I'll take you back to your apartment."
You widened your eyes "Didn't you hear what I said?"
"Yes, I heard and that's why I need you to be there. And when he comes to get you I'll be there with you and I'll kill him."
You closed your eyes in terror "Stephen... he will know, he always knows and he will get me."
Stephen touched your face trying to reassure you "This is the only way."
"Don't make me do it, don't make me go back there. I feel like… I'm not going back this time."
"Yes you will, I'll make sure of it. You need to trust me and when this is all over we'll be together."
You sighed surrendering to him. He cupped your cheeks with his shaking hands and kissed you with a sweetness you never knew before.
Stephen opened a portal to your apartment, he ordered pizza and although you weren't hungry he forced you to eat and you stayed on the couch watching TV until he noticed your head hanging on his shoulder defeated by tiredness and sleep.
He took you to the bed and kissed your lips and against your will he left the room turning off the light and closing the door. The plan was already in motion, but he hated the idea of using you as bait.
What he didn't tell you though is that he wouldn't fight alone. A portal opened in your living room and what was left of the Kamar Taj masters passed through it. Two more portals opened and the Masters of London and Hong Kong entered.
Stephen nodded "I appreciate you coming to help me."
The London Master nodded. "We have come to avenge the death of the Sorcerer Supreme and we will have our vengeance."
Sara approached Stephen "What do we do now?"
He glared towards the stairs "He will come to take her to his universe, we will surprise him and kill him before he can."
You didn't want to sleep, but your body was tired and your eyes closed against your will. As much as your heart was full of hope for a future with Stephen, your Stephen, the good man you've always been in love with, your mind was terrified pointing out all the reasons why this was a bad plan. He would know, he always knew everything.
You didn't notice at what point your scary thoughts turned into scary dreams. You were in the Sanctum, in that dark Sanctum and you could hear the sound of the sea, the waves crashing against each other, a red moon hovered in the sky and the stairs that climbed to the sky stretched out in front of you. You knew you were dreaming because you never saw that part of the Sanctum and you were pretty sure it didn't even exist. You were wearing the same long white dress from the night the spell was cast and you slowly started up the stairs.
When you finally reached the top of the stairs you reached the main hall of the Sanctum and in horror beheld Stephen waiting for you with mischievous eyes and a smirk on his face.
"Welcome home, kitten."
You looked around scared "No, no.. this is a dream. I'm dreaming."
He sighed lowering his head in mock disappointment "Do you still believe that after all we've been through? All we've done?" He showed you his left hand, the magic around his finger glowing like never before.
"This is very real."
You felt the tears rolling down your face "But... Stephen... he said..." You couldn't finish.
"He said he would protect you from me. From me. Oh my sweet girl, why would you need protection from me? I would never harm you."
You instinctively touched your face and he lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry. You hurt my feelings deeply and I lost control just for a second. It won't happen again. I promise you"
You could almost believe what he was saying, deep down you felt that in a way he loved you, but you couldn't give in to those thoughts, there was no excuse for what he did and you knew that nothing was stopping him from doing it again. You sighed angrily, the blood boiling in your veins
"What about all those innocent people you killed? Was it just because you lost control too or because you wanted to quench the lust for blood? I didn't do anything to justify what you did. Yes , I kissed him, you always knew I had feelings for him, but more importantly I made him go away, I didn't say anything about us, I was faithful to you and still you..."
He didn't answer. You could see in his face that he knew he'd overreacted, that he'd lost control for nothing. He knew very well what he had done, but he didn't really care.
"I gave myself to you, I satiated your lust for the flesh, and I thought you loved me, but the first time I displeased you, you hit me. You hit me. Stephen...you hurt me."
He moved closer to you and tried to touch your face, but you pulled back, his hands hovering in the air.
"Kitten I am sorry. I lost control the moment I saw you in his arms. I love you so much, you need to understand. You promised me that no man would ever touch you. All I did was because I loved you, Because I love you I couldn't bear the thought of you choosing him over me, I don't want to be alone here, not when I've spent so much time alone knowing that you existed and that you loved me too, waiting for the right moment to approach you. I did everything right"
He shook his head "But he came between us and he needed to be put in his place, he needed to be reminded of my power."
That Stephen was completely insane, how couldn’t you see that? And how for God sake could your chest still ache for him? How could you still be attracted to him? What kind of dark magic was it that made you want to believe in everything he said and justify everything he'd done just so you could throw yourself into his arms again and feel less guilty about it? He was so ingrained inside you, so perpetrated inside your mind and it scared you.
You stared at him, determined to hurt him.
"I never loved you. I love him. I always loved him and you took advantage of that, you used my love, such a pure and delicate thing, against me. You turned it into something impure and evil."
He snapped "Evil? How can you say that? Haven't I shown the extent of my love for you countless times?"
You shook your head "No, you shown the extent of your obsession and madness. Stephen, you brought me here countless times against my will, you abused me physically and mentally, you broke me to the point of making me believe that I loved you and your power over me has grown so strong that even now after all you've done I still feel... this."
You could see in his face that those words had hurted him.
...
Stephen felt the presence of dark magic in your apartment and ran to your room, the Masters behind him, but when he got there your bed was empty and a portal of purple magic was open revealing only darkness inside.
Sara looked at him scared "It's a trap."
Stephen ran his hands over his face. "I need to save her. I promised I wouldn't let her go back there."
The Hong Kong Master was the one who answered first "We will go with you."
The London Master nodded. "He doesn't expect this, he thinks you go alone. We can get this over with tonight."
Stephen stared at Sara waiting for what she had to say. She nodded "For Wong."
You were standing looking out the huge round window at the sight of a shattered world, it was the scariest thing you've ever seen in your life and you wondered how you could overlook it. You kept your arms tight around your body, your skin was cold, it was always so cold there. Tears streamed and dried on your face.
He came close to you and wrapped his arms around your waist and as much as you hated it, your body reacted to him just like it always did since the first time you were there, the first nightmare, the first abuse.
He rubbed his goatee deliberately on your neck "I'm not going to apologize for loving you and for doing what I did to have you..."
You didn't answer and he turned his face to the other side of your neck humming in your ear as he bit your earlobe "And I know eventually you'll forgive me for what I'm about to do."
You turned to him staring scared listening to the sound of footsteps going up the stairs and he took you by the arm and dragged you up the stairs throwing you in the room and closing the door. You threw yourself against the door, screaming in desperation.
"No! No! STEPHEN IS A TRAP! STEPHEEEN!"
When Stephen and the masters finally reached the bottom of the stairs, they found the hall empty and destroyed in darkness lit only by countless candles scattered on the floor.
They looked from side to side looking for the man they came to kill, but all they found was silence until a blast of purple magic hit two masters knocking them backwards causing them to crash into the wall and fall to the floor unconscious. Stephen moved his hands and two shields of golden magic formed in his hands. The other masters did the same.
"Don't be a coward. Show yourself." Cried the master of London.
Stephen's voice came from above, his hand sliding slowly along the stair rail. "A coward you say..." He continued down slowly "Tell me Stephen, would a coward have entered the Kamar Taj and killed your Sorcerer Supreme?"
Stephen gritted his teeth at last seeing his variant. He seemed maddened.
"A coward hides behind a familiar face to gain the upper hand in a fight" Sara replied "He trusted you, it wasn't a fair fight."
Sinister Strange tilted his head "Fair? No, but it was fun for sure."
He conjured a shield of purple magic protecting him at the exact moment the masters rushed against him. The clash of the two spells making the Sanctum tremble. He gripped the shield with frightening ease and with his other hand he moved his fingers projecting a beam of red magic that hit the masters and kept them suspended in the air screaming in agonizing pain, after a minute he hurled the masters against the wall and they didn't get up anymore.
Stephen knew his strength came from the Darkhold, he needed to get the book, but how?
Sinister Strange ran a hand through his hair pointing to the masters on the ground "It was very selfish of you to bring them to die here. This was not their fight."
Stephen clenched his fists "It became theirs the moment you killed Wong."
He nodded tsking "Wong... If it's any consolation, I killed my Wong too, but then again I killed the entire universe."
Stephen heard your screams coming from upstairs and despaired. "What did you do to her? I need to see her!"
Sinister glared at him slyly "Why? Do you really think I could hurt her? Why should her pay for the sins which are yours?"
Stephen stared in horror as a third eye appeared on his variant's forehead, the Sanctum began to tremble and red magic emanated from his fingertips. The Darkhold fed him with dark magic, he couldn't defeat him unless he took the book from him.
Stephen conjured the Eldritch Whip and launched it towards the book strapped to Sinister's waist, but as soon as the whip reached the Darkhold, Sinister grabbed the book and retaliated by launching Stephen against the piano. The entire Sanctum once again shook with the force of his power.
Sinister moved his fingers to form a ball of purple energy, but before he could attack him, Stephen used the piano music sheets to form golden magic runes and throw them at Sinister who was surprised by the attack. The Darkhold dropping from his waist.
...
You could hear the noises from downstairs, screams and sounds of fighting, the entire Sanctum was shaking and you feared it would collapse on itself. You forced yourself against the door watching as the wood cracked with the tremor and finally it gave way. You ran down the hall and down the stairs in time to see the two Stephens fighting each other, golden magic coming out of one hand and purple magic coming out of the other's hand, a ball of magic in the center between the two where the two spells met and clashed with each other.
"Stephen!" You screamed. The two turned their heads facing you and Sinister took advantage of the moment of distraction to hit Stephen throwing him against the round window that shattered into a thousand pieces with a burst of purple light.
You screamed at the sight of Stephen falling through the window, but before that could happen Sinister conjured a purple magic rope and threw it at Stephen, it wrapped around his neck preventing him from falling to his death and at the same time strangling him and keeping him there on tiptoe, body leaning back utterly defeated and surrendered.
Sinister gripped the magic rope with frightening ease.
"Look, Stephen. Looks like we have company. A special spectator for our final act. I have to admit I'm getting tired of this game."
Stephen kept his hands tight on the rope around his neck trying to breathe. Blood was running down his face.
"Please Stephen... I beg you, don't kill him."
Sinister stared at you and for the first time you saw him for what he really was, the third eye staring back at you with unfathomable hatred and monstrous malice.
Stephen tried to speak, but only whispers came out of his mouth "Free her, and you can kill me. My life for hers. Please."
Sinister’s laugh was terrifying "Oh you didn't understand Stephen. In fact I expected you to come. You have no idea how happy I was when I saw you here. The trap was set and you fell like the fool I always knew you were"
He stared at you, the rope of purple magic tight in his hands, Stephen's feet slipping on the floor as he edged closer and closer to the precipice.
"Take a look at him Y/N, this might be the last time you see him alive. Trust me, I will do it. This won't be the first time I kill a Stephen Strange."
You stared at him in disgust but forced your feet to take a step towards him "Stephen, please, I love him. Doesn't that mean anything to you?"
He stared at you menacingly, you could barely look at his face with that third eye he looked like a monster, but that didn't really horrified you as much as the black of his soul.
"Oh kitten" He pulled the rope strangling Stephen "Do you love him? No, you love ME! You said it countless times while I fucked you, don't say you didn't like it I know your body and your mind like no man ever could"
He screamed every word menacingly, "That's the deal: spend the rest of your life with me, keep the promise you made to me, buy his freedom with your love. Refuse me and you'll send him straight to his death. This is the choice. This is the point of no return."
Tears streamed down your face, your heart breaking into a thousand pieces. You knew from the start that if you entered that universe again you would not be able to get out.
"Y/N, no, don't do that.’’ Stephen begged.
Sinister pulled the rope even tighter and Stephen groaned in pain.
"No!" You screamed falling to your knees.
The point of no return... there was no turning back now and whatever choice you made you would lose. You looked up at the man who had sworn to love you and who was now forcing you to make an impossible choice.
"Stephen..." You whispered "I gave myself to you blindly and you deceived me."
"You try my patience. Make your choice." Sinister threatened.
You took a deep breath, nodding and standing up. You wiped the tears from your face and walked towards him.
"Stephen, you’ve been here alone for a long time and you don't know what love is anymore."
He stared at you in surprise as you touched his face "But I'll have plenty of time to show you how to love and you won't be alone again, I promise you."
You took his face between your hands and kissed him first a touch of lips and then deepened the kiss by kissing him ardently.
Stephen shook his head negatively facing the scene with immeasurable sadness and guilt, tears streamed down his face understanding what choice you made.
Sinister gently pushed you away. He pulled Stephen into the Sanctum throwing him to the ground and a portal of purple magic opened in front of him back to your apartment.
"Go away, go back to your miserable life and forget everything that happened here. Don't ever try to go back or I assure you I will not be so merciful next time"
Sinister sighed, turning his back on Stephen and walking away. He stared at you nodding allowing you to say goodbye to Stephen.
Stephen got up with difficulty and you ran to him. He held your hands, they trembled in his.
"You stay here and my world becomes smaller because of it."
You closed your eyes letting the tears flow.
"Go away Stephen. Go away now and leave me here."
He sighed knowing he couldn't win. He nodded, respecting your decision, but knowing he would never forgive himself for losing you like that.
"Y/N...I love you." Stephen muttered almost as if it was a secret.
"Come to me Y/N" Sinister reached for you "No man will ever love you more than I do."
You walked away from Stephen and walked towards Sinister holding his hand. He pressed you against his body and held your face against his chest, wiping your tears away with his thumb.
"I love you so much, my sweet girl" He cooed stroking your hair.
Stephen closed his eyes letting the tears flow, the sight of you in that monster's arms would haunt him forever. He turned his back on you and walked through the portal which immediately closed.
You watched Stephen disappear before your eyes and you knew you would never see him again, you would never see anything again, that was your life now, you and Stephen trapped in that destroyed universe forever.
The tightness of his embrace around your body was as obsessive as the love he had for you, you could barely breathe, you could barely move. He rested his cheek on your head and shushed you.
"It’s okay my love, you are safe now, I will take care of you"
He hummed you a song, the same song he was playing on the piano the last time you were there, he started humming that song softly in your ear lulling you.
"Let your mind start a journey to a strange new world Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before Let your soul take you where you long to be Only then can you belong to me"

This Week in BL
 July 2021 Wk 1
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
My Boy the series Ep 1 - no subs. It’s exactly like the trailer, cool dude/nerd pairing. Starts with our POV (the nerd) breaking up with his boyfriend, hottest guy on campus then bullies him over stupid stuff, sparks fly, and we’re off! Very pat, but they’re trying. The seme can actually play the guitar which is nice to see, but I sense a sing feelings trope incoming and y’all know how I feel about those. *shudder* Also the crap sound effects are strong with this one. So I guess I’m mixed but I’ll keep watching.
Y-Destiny Ep 14 - the end of YoonLayPerth sad eps. The inherent gayness of flutes strikes again. I got excited because Tir & Masuk use rao with each other (so cute!). Did I cry? Of course. I’m a total sap. Lay is great at pining and I loved this installment. There was something almost poly about it, which I think was partly a conversation with the shippers about letting Tay have two ships, but was very cleverly done. Looks like the final next ep will simply be a wrap up/couples check in.
Golden Blood Ep 2 - good, they gave Sky a chance to be sweet, gotta redeem the brat. Tropes included piggy back, gifts, shoulder sleep, bathroom drama, wound tending, & sponge bath plus a side dish couple (sunshine/tsundere). Bit overacted, but I’m enjoying it.
Top Secret Together Ep 8 - look my boys are just the flirtiest things EVER and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Seriously, they have no shame. It’s great. Don’t really care about the others anymore but the friendship aspect is cute. La la la.
Nitiman Ep 9 - mostly just them eating and drinking together and then eating some more. I’m okay with that. Quality entertainment. Bit of manufactured drama at the end, rumors that 10 will be the last episode and I could see that happening, they seem to have run out of steam. But MDL still says 12.
Hometown’s Embrace Ep 1-3 - picked up this pulp at the rec of @heretherebedork. It’s a good/bad pairing with the adorable sunshine returning to his poverty stricken home getting involved with the local loan shark muscle. Secondary couple is a noble teacher plus local punk. It’s a very unusual setting for BL and I like that but it’s also very pulp and difficult to follow.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Monster in Law AKA Mẹ Chồn Dâu Cáo (Vietnam) Ep 9-11 - This is turning into a family drama soap opera and I’m okay with that. It’s fun. The anchor couple can hold it together and I basically am just happy to see anything centered on gay domesticity.
Be Loved in House: I Do (Taiwan) Ep 8 - how are they so soft? Why do we have to have a faen fatal? Is my heart going to survive 4 more episodes? Do we have a new entry into the best BL parents roster? GAH. SUCH A GOOD SHOW.
Light On Me 1-2 - a 16 episode high school set BL (each ep = 15min new content). It’s very cute. Super socially awkward kid decides he needs to make friends so tries joining the student council but one of them hates him. 3 possible love interests although it’s obviously the hater. Everyone is VERY pretty.
Ossan’s Love Eps 1-4 - Hong Kong’s remake of the Japanese original. I like this cast better, the main actor is appealing even though the character is basically a lovable fool (not my favorite archetype). It’s VERY camp and so far pretty beat-for-beat like the original. I *think* I like it. I keep getting distracted by the nuances of the Hong Kong accent. The eng subs are STELLAR (of course). It’s 15 eps at 40 each so LONG for a not-Thai BL. You’ll either like the style or find it very off-putting - Japanese slapstick meets Korean sit-com. I’m not sure I’ll make it through the whole thing.

Delays in BL
CURRENTLY DELAYED OUT OF THAILAND
Thailand has a history of announcing projects and then not green lighting them, so it’s hard to know if something is actually in production and delayed or never got out the gate. But I think that we can safely say the following are delayed for various reasons not the least of which is surging C19.
Bad Buddy - many who follow GMMTV closely think this was supposed to take over the FUTS Frigay time slot but there hasn’t been any indication that this will happen, although about a month ago we got BTS that they were workshopping it.
Bite Me (full trailer) - Mark Siwat as a delivery boy who inspires a grumpy chef. Rumors abound around illnesses.
2gether the movie (Thai trailer) - intended theater release was for April 22.
Tell the World I Love You - already completed filming, stars Perth (Ae in LBC) opposite Bas (Wayo/Wayo) in an action movie BL. Established director Poj, support cast include Bank (Gen Y) was supposed to release to theaters in the first quarter.
CURRENTLY DELAYED OUT OF KOREA
Made in Rooftop - was supposed to release somewhere last week but no one knows anything about it. Could be a delayed theater release like what is happening in Thailand.
CURRENTLY DELAYED OUT OF TAIWAN
Friend or Lover - indie microfilm meets web series BL. I just get the feeling from their YouTube channel that they are struggling right now to get the 4th (and final) ep out.
Love is Science? This 20 ep May/December het romance drama with a BL subplot has been delayed at the half-way mark for over a month now, with another month to go at least. There’s something very wrong with production on this one.
Tumblr media
Breaking News
Korean studio Strongberry (we love them, okay?) dropped a new trailer for Sweet Curse. Usually they only do microfilms but they have done a series in the past, (Long Time No See) so this could be either. But what it definitely is, is BL horror.
I don’t really follow BL out of the Philippines but I might have to make an exception for Tie the Not (previously known as Under the same Sky). Based on a true story, this centers on the Chinese-Filipino community and involves a gay romance, culture conflict, and challenging traditions. When the head of the Wang family dies, Blue and his parents journey to Xiamen, China to discover their roots. But an unwelcome surprise awaits Blue. (From MDL) It’s from Oxin, the studio behind My Day, who have slightly higher production values than other Pinoy houses.
It looks like Thai studio Wabi Sabi might be bringing us a high school set BL pulp, Game On, about an older brother who discovers his younger brother is gay and starts interfering in his romances/friendships with disastrous results. It’s a big cast with lost of WS regulars so I think it’s coming from them?
New Thai BL Check Out got a teaser. Not much info on this one, so this is likely a fund raising trailer but it’s appealing. Looks like a pulp friends to lovers, possibly f-buddies/players. The actors have worked together before in Skinship and Best has been a lot of BL (including Good in LBC), their chemistry looks solid.

Next Week Looks Like This:
Some shows may be listed later than actual air date for International subs accessibility reasons.

[Pseudo-review to the AbraxasVerse Timeline, 'cos I've got in the habit so why not:]
Ni-hiiice!!! :D :D
I smiled and chuckled a bit at all the name expansions to the events in 'Abraxas' and the Hollow Earth element. :D I was gleeful at reading the details of what happens next (Lubyov's name for her Child of Zmei makes me chuckle. x)) I guess Nadezhda survived long enough to name her child, but I love how it's ambiguous if she died - maybe I'll have to bring Zima back and explore his potential when I next write an Abraxasverse recursive fic. ;) Hohoho-ho, of course Simmons would pick a pair of names like that for the twins in his possession, with how his ego just doesn't have any limits when it comes to "man's reach should exceed his grasp," and I both chuckle and get the sense of Maia's reasonableness with her choice of nicknames. :) Yep, that Samuel passage's use reeks so much of blasphemy and capital-H hubris that it equally fits Simmons, remembering his P.O.V. in the novelisation, and I love how the passage getting switched out has such physical relevance just like the Elder Futhark's crucial role in the One-Night War. :)
I chuckle and feel a deep sense of foreboding at the thought so few Zmeyevich have been found by Monarch. :O I also delight in the details about how the Many and Zmeyevich were created separately. :) My blood runs cold at that "glitch" in Hong Kong. :O :O
I delight in reading how the events on Skull Island went in Abraxasverse, and Rodan and Abraxas becoming an official couple. :) The details of Susan's death give me a warmth shot of feels. :') I smile at the reveal that Madison is now Co-Director Mark's assistant at Monarch, and I love how Abraxasverse Mark is a lot more reasonable with her when shit hits in 2024. :) Poor Maddie, not hearing from Aunt Viv for a whole year.  I chuckle at reading Maia's transcribed words with Madison, and the idea of her being something of a one-time mentor to Maddie. :D Overall, between that and Maia's hazy-feel turn and plans, I really love what this timeline does with Abraxasverse Maia. :)
I'm laughing or gasping or chuckling out loud at all the bits of ascended fanon that are coming in this timeline - from Scylla in Suez Canal to Stenz's son to Godzilla Jr. and the Skullcrawlers and Dagon's skeleton's fate/Kiryu to Monarch's role in constructing a pro-Godzilla Mecha to the other Titans attacking Apex alongside Godzilla. :D :D
---
Ha! I really wanted to do as much as possible in leaving breadcrumbs for an AbraxasVerse take on GvK. I already compared the Hollow Earth element to Xenogears' Zohar in one of Wag's scenarios and of course the comparison wouldn't leave me alone, plus the name's meaning seems appropriate for an Unobtanium material like that. Will this Zohar be used to house a higher-dimensional being as well? Maybe not... but it definitely has the self-sustaining properties of Xeno-Zohar. ;) And it's definitely my Xenosaga-loving self from high school talking when all those on-the-nose Meaningful Names came into play, from the twins to Dagon's supercomputer brain, plus Abaddon and Megiddo came to mind first when asking myself "if I were a narcissistic overly ambitious CEO..."
That "glitch" in Hong Kong was a sneaky double-reference; not only to Deus from 'Gears but to a certain AI fellow in the Halo-verse called Mendicant Bias... check out one of his quotes, and you'll get some Big Ghidorah Energy... that nod to Ghids and the Many's use of "and your eyes shall be opened and ye shall be as gods" might just be the mech's way of mocking Walter. Or maybe it's an early sign of Zmeyevich influence from the twins...? Future writers may be the judge of that.
As opposed to the epic future sci-fi space opera influences, the bits with Maia and Ren and Madison (also Josh and Bernie) are more Shadowrun in flavor: cyberpunk corporate espionage with plucky lower-class anti-heroes causing trouble in the night. Apex just gave me such Shadowrun vibes on the first showing with their neon-lighted underground transport and especially that freakin' pyramid in Hong Kong; all they need now is a literal dragon CEO and blood magic and they're really in business! Plus canon!Maia had a very, very extremely brief hint of being more than just canon!Maia (that bit where she rushes to Jia's side after she and Ilene almost drowned) and wanted to expand on it a little here.
Dagon's programming using that Elder Futhark chant feels like it could play an important establishing part in Dagon's character; the context can be used to mean it wards off the negative influence of any Zmey trying to hijack him, and can even be used as a mantra for him as he slowly grows more acclimated to his new situation, like how Viv n' San used the Elder Futhark. But, again, that's up for any storytellers wanting a go at it...

Play with Fire(18+ story Donghyuck/Mark)
Pairing:
Mark/Donghyuck
Warnings and genres:
PWP, Kinks, Sensory Deprivation, Temperature play, Love bites, Shibari, Some Explicit Language
Summary:
- You wanted to see me? - suddenly says Haechan, leaning against the door, which frightened Mark.
It seems to him that the younger one specially send him to Hong Kong with his words, actions, body, and with his endless love, which fills in all the air in older one lungs, so that Mark breathes only with him.
     - You wanted to see me? - suddenly says Haechan, leaning against the door which frightened Mark.
He thinks the younger one specially sends him to Hong Kong with his words, actions, body, and with his endless love, which fills all the air in his lungs so that the older one breathes only with him.
He has only towel on his body, exposing the pelvic bones, which in the moon's light look especially alluring. Mark can also pick up a subtle lavender scent that is intertwined with coffee notes.
        - Ah. I wanted not only to see you, kitten. - and it works on the maknae, like a kind of trigger: he goes inside room, closes the door behind him, slowly kneels down and crawls to the hyung’s bed like a graceful cat. Mark need not see his eyes, but he feels how predatory his “sun “looks at him. He crawls to the bed, runs his fingertips over the knuckles of aristocratic hands, climbing onto the bed and not taking his eyes off the elder. Mark closes his eyes, intertwining their fingers, and reaches for a kiss, but Haechan’s palm, which resting on his chest, stopped him.
        - Hyung, today I want to try something new ... - with these words, he takes off his towel, sitting on the hyung, and pulls out a few ice cubes from the bag was on the nightstand.
        - What are you going to… - Mark doesn’t have time to ask when Donghyuck puts an ice piece in his mouth and, with a predatory smile, approached the elder’s lips, covering them with his own. The Canadian immediately felt a pleasant chill on his lips. His lips are dry and thin, but he knows how to use them so that, even with some of their faults, he can drive maknae to delirium tremens. He opens his mouth wider, allowing the kiss to deepen, catching a shudder from Haechan’s cold tongue. Suddenly, something cold applies to Mark’s nipples, and he wants to pull away, but Hae holds him with a steel grip.
Haechan runs a cube along the halos of one nipple, then the other, and rises to the neck, and with his fingertips he finds the pulsating vein and runs the rest of the ice over it. The ice melts from Mark’s already heated body, so it forces him to break the kiss to lick off the rest of the water. But that would be too easy, so he decides that it would be beautiful if the hyung’s neck was covered with rosebuds. Having licked off the water, he ceases to be tender, and presses his teeth and sucks the skin, leaving beautiful, burgundy-colored buds on the dark skin, which tomorrow will bloom with scarlet, purple, crimson roses.
Mark’s hands tremble in the iron grip of Donghyuck’s fingers as he rolls him onto the cold sheets and lifts his head with his fingers, prying his chin, revealing a view of the chic neck. He reaches for the nightstand, which has a thick blindfold on it. Mark finds it hard to breathe. As soon as a person loses one sense, all the others are active. Haechan blindfolded his hyung, which sharpens his hearing to the maximum, feels his blood running through his veins, hears his own heart beating wildly, how his maknae breathes, and every breath he takes is a loss of control for Mark-ie.
        - If it will be painful - just tell me, - the younger whispers in his ear, tying a bandage and running his cold tongue along the conch of his ear, slightly biting the lobe at the end. With his whispers, he sends billions of signals per millisecond, forcing his body to work in a more frantic rhythm. Don runs his hand over his chest, and Min, because of inability to see, literally feels every joint and knuckle of his graceful hand.
        - Oh.. Okay, - Mark by touch searches for Haechan, bumping into his hips, gently placing his hands on them and with his fingertips leading to the top. His skin is too velvety to be real.
        - No, no, babe. Today I’m on top. - Haechan stops any attempts to seize power from the elder. - Shall we try shibari? I know several nodes. Yuta-hyung kindly agreed to teach them.
From the very tiny, at first glance, bag, Donghyuck pulls out a not quite small rope. He lowers the elder to the floor and sits him on his knees. The first thing Lee-junior does is tie his hands, leaving no chance of getting out. Then he puts the rope on his chest and makes the first cross, he made three more such crosses for sure. Then two loops appear on the neck which confuses Mark a little, but he does not show it, because he likes everything so far and he frankly enjoys what is happening. Meanwhile, the rope moved to the back, then pulled over the thin waistline, and then Haechan made some last knots on the hips.
He walked away to look at his “work of art” and take a picture, because when else would he have time to be on top. With a satisfied smile, Haechan walked over to Mark and roughly grabbed him by the knots on his chest.
        - Mark. Explain to me why you spend so much time with Yuta-hyung? Hmm? I mean nothing to you anymore? Bastard... - with these words, Mark got a resounding slap in the face, because he deserved it, and Mark Lee was even more turned on when Donghyuck was so rude.
        - It’s time to fuck you, so you can remember who you belong to forever.- he puts his hand on the place of impact, and lightly touched his lips somewhere to the back of his head.
Haechan pushed Mark to the floor, spreading his legs apart as far as the rope would allow. He wanted to fuck Minhyun roughly, but at the last moment he took pity and turned him over, putting him on his knees, which parted from excitement and operas on his chest to stretch.
         - Mark-iiiee... You like everything, right? Say something.
The answer was an unrestrained groan of pain mixed with pleasure rolling slowly, his lungs refuse to take in air, which makes it unrealistic to breathe.
         - I want you to see me take you, so I will untie the bandage. But not all at once, but for now, enjoy stretching. And yes, you won’t end until I say ... - after these words, he fastened the ring on the elder’s penis, and Mark whined in displeasure.
Haechan smeared lubricant on his palm and entered the first icy finger inside. He entered unexpectedly with little difficulty, as if Mark had already played with himself before. The second followed the first finger. It makes sense, isn’t it? When there were already three fingers in the body of Mark, he himself sat on them.
        - Mark-ie, I think you’re ready. - Haechan takes out his fingers, lubricates his penis and puts it to Minhyun’s hole with a characteristic and stupid squelch. Keeping his promise, Donghyuck unties the ribbon in front of his eyes, and right there in the mirror opposite, Mark observes a rather interesting picture: he lies with his chest on the floor, all tied up and with red cheeks.
At such a sight, Mark’s dick jerked, and he groaned, asking for more than frightening Donghyuck a little, because while he was stretching him, he was practically silent, like a partisan, and now suddenly he spoke.
In one movement, Haechan entered the pliable body and immediately picked up a quick pace. Mark moaned at the top of his voice, not afraid that someone might hear them.
        - Look in the mirror. - sounded like an order. Mark must obey if he wants to cum. - You moan like a real whore. Can it be more melodic or what?
        - I’m not Beethoven or Bach for you to moan more melodic, - Mark squeezed out through groans, to which Haechan just grinned.
After a while, Lee-junior felt a quick discharge and squeezed harder on the loops around Minhyun’s neck, from which he choked. Maknae admires how beautifully the rope digs into this delicate dark skin, enjoys this perfection. Mark gasps for air like a fish, bite his already bleeding lips into the meat, tries to twitch his hips so that the younger finally remembers that besides physical satisfaction, he must still somehow breathe. Senior Lee heard only a quiet “Cum ... “and felt that he finally removed this stupid ring from his cock. Then Donghyuck dig his teeth into his shoulder, and Mark felt something warm inside him ...
The guys were just lying on the floor, trying to decide on such a bold act as going to the shower.
         - It was unforgettable ... Now, untie me, everything is numb.
With the last of his strength, Haechan got up and untied the knots from the rope.
        - Once again, If I see you with Yuta-hyung - I will fuck so freaking hard that you cannot sit for a month.
        - Okay, so I need to be with him more often.
        - Sounds like a good plan.

T'was the night before the Oscars...
Tumblr media
Here we are again. The final stab at a decent award show ceremony amidst a global pandemic. I'm not getting my hopes up after the Golden Globes and SAG zoom calls, in fact I've read very little about the upcoming ceremonies since they announced they would not be using zoom... and then promptly reversed that decision.
It would seem no matter how late we delay the Oscars, I still find myself the night before the show scrambling to watch all the Best Picture nominees. It also hasn't slipped my mind all the promises I'd made to discuss my top films of 2020 and the things I would not have seen if not for this global catastrophe. Having had a number of conversations with fellow cinephiles, many have also found themselves very unenthused about award season contenders, dramatic pictures or anything with heavier content so to speak, or even movies in general. The struggle to concentrate is real.
I'm going to get right into my list of predictions with the caveats that I have yet to see Sound of Metal, and I have to watch the second half of Judas and the Black Messiah after I hit 'post' here. You will find as we go through, there's lots more I haven't seen.
Best Picture
“The Father”
“Judas and the Black Messiah”
“Mank”
“Minari”
“Nomadland” - Will win
“Promising Young Woman” - Should win (though I liked Nomadland very much as well)
“Sound of Metal”
“The Trial of the Chicago 7”
Best Director
Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”)
David Fincher (“Mank”) - excellent director but I actually don't think he left his mark on Mank as much as he did many of his other films, I've questioned previously whether he should have gotten the nomination
Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”)
Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) - Will win/should win
Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”)
Best Actor in a Leading Role - very strong contenders all around in this category, every one of them (I'm sure I'll have the same reaction about Riz Ahmed) made me say "holy shit" in amazement out loud
Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”)
Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) - Will win/should win
Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”)
Gary Oldman (“Mank”)
Steven Yeun (“Minari”)
Best Actress in a Leading Role
Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) - I think if not Andra Day, then Viola will win it
Andra Day (“The United States v. Billie Holiday”) - Will win?/should win
Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”)
Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”)
Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”)
Best Actor in a Supporting Role
Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) - I think he's also got a decent shot in this category
Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) - Will win/should win
Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”)
Paul Raci (“Sound of Metal”)
Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”)
Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Maria Bakalova (‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”) - truth be told I didn't think her performance was so great that she should get an Oscar nomination for it
Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”)
Olivia Colman (“The Father”) - another potentially unpopular comment... while I think Olivia Colman is one of the best actresses and most delightful people in existence, given her range and talent I don't she particularly excelled in The Father to make it an Oscar-worthy performance.
Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”)
Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”) - Will win/should win
Best Animated Feature Film - I only saw one film so I have no basis for comparison
“Onward” (Pixar)
“Over the Moon” (Netflix)
“A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” (Netflix)
“Soul” (Pixar) - will win
“Wolfwalkers” (Apple TV Plus/GKIDS)
Best Adapted Screenplay
“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Screenplay by Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Peter Baynham, Erica Rivinoja, Dan Mazer, Jena Friedman, Lee Kern; Story by Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Dan Swimer, Nina Pedrad
“The Father,” Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller - should win...and will win?
“Nomadland,” Chloé Zhao
“One Night in Miami,” Kemp Powers - might also win?
“The White Tiger,” Ramin Bahrani
Best Original Screenplay
“Judas and the Black Messiah.” Screenplay by Will Berson, Shaka King; Story by Will Berson, Shaka King, Kenny Lucas, Keith Lucas
“Minari,” Lee Isaac Chung
“Promising Young Woman,” Emerald Fennell - 50/50 will win/definitely should win tho!
“Sound of Metal.” Screenplay by Darius Marder, Abraham Marder; Story by Darius Marder, Derek Cianfrance
“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Aaron Sorkin - 50/50 will win... I really didn't get onboard this movie, but I will say the script was the best thing about it
Best Original Song - I'm not even going to venture a guess...
“Fight for You,” (“Judas and the Black Messiah”). Music by H.E.R. and Dernst Emile II; Lyric by H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas
“Hear My Voice,” (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”). Music by Daniel Pemberton; Lyric by Daniel Pemberton and Celeste Waite
“Húsavík,” (“Eurovision Song Contest”). Music and Lyric by Savan Kotecha, Fat Max Gsus and Rickard Göransson
“Io Si (Seen),” (“The Life Ahead”). Music by Diane Warren; Lyric by Diane Warren and Laura Pausini
“Speak Now,” (“One Night in Miami”). Music and Lyric by Leslie Odom, Jr. and Sam Ashworth
Best Original Score - I actually didn't think much of any of the scores in any of the films I've seen in 2020...
“Da 5 Bloods,” Terence Blanchard
“Mank,” Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross
“Minari,” Emile Mosseri
“News of the World,” James Newton Howard
“Soul,” Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste - will win

Best Costume Design

“Burrow” (Disney Plus/Pixar)

“News of the World,” Dariusz Wolski
“Nomadland,” Joshua James Richards

“The Trial of the Chicago 7,” Alan Baumgarten - 50/50 will win
Best International Feature Film
“Another Round” (Denmark) - will win
“Better Days” (Hong Kong) - should win (yes, because I'm biased, plus it's also the only other film aside from Another Round that I've seen in this category and I liked it a lot better, but also, just because it's very fine film)
“Collective” (Romania)
“The Man Who Sold His Skin” (Tunisia)
“Quo Vadis, Aida?”(Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
“Emma,” Marese Langan, Laura Allen, Claudia Stolze - will win

“Pinocchio,” Mark Coulier, Dalia Colli, Francesco Pegoretti
Best Production Design
“The Father.” Production Design: Peter Francis; Set Decoration: Cathy Featherstone - I don't think this is the best Production Design but I do think it's underrated what they did and that it should be recognized a different kind of creativity went into designing the sets for this film.
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Production Design: Mark Ricker; Set Decoration: Karen O’Hara and Diana Stoughton
“Mank.” Production Design: Donald Graham Burt; Set Decoration: Jan Pascale - will win? I do think the Production Design was spectacular...

Best Visual Effects
“Love and Monsters,” Matt Sloan, Genevieve Camilleri, Matt Everitt and Brian Cox

“The One and Only Ivan,” Nick Davis, Greg Fisher, Ben Jones and Santiago Colomo Martinez
“Tenet,” Andrew Jackson, David Lee, Andrew Lockley and Scott Fisher - will win/should win... like why would it not win??
Ok, I wasn't very decisive in some of those categories and since I'm taking part in an Oscar pool I will have to make some choices and refine my selections before tomorrow. I will share my final Oscar pool pics, do my part bombarding everyone's twitter tomorrow evening, and review after the awards where it all went right/wrong.

What are some actually GOOD Sword and Sandal movies?
Tumblr media
One of the bigger genres in Italy who’s popularity came and went in waves from the silent era to the present, Sword and Sandal (or Peplum) films are Italian movies about gladiators, musclemen, Ancient Greece and Rome, and who’s main characters include Hercules, Spartacus, Ursus, Maciste (a homegrown, semi-Marxist Hercules who fights the rich and decadent who is purely a creation of Italian cinema).
Tumblr media
The genre started in 1912, with Cabiria, an ultra-early Italian feature that predated D.W. Griffith, featuring a muscular African slave named Maciste, and due to his muscles and screen presence, Bartolomeo Pagano may have been the first true movie star, making dozens of sequels. The popularity of these movies went into hibernation in Italy until 1959, when it got a huge resurgence when Steve Reeves starred as Hercules, and consequently became the highest paid star in Europe. Hercules (1959) caused literally hundreds of movies to be made, assembly line, in a burst of about 5 years. The genre burned itself out through repetition in only a half decade, only to be replaced by the Italian horror/slasher film and the Spaghetti Western. It was down for good, only to have something of a resurgence of popularity in Italy in the wake of the popularity of John Milius’s Conan the Barbarian in the early 1980s.
Tumblr media
Sword and Sandal seems to be a genre where any given film picked at random could be a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. For the most part, Sword and Sandal movies are mostly known for being the training ground of people who showed their skills in other genres, like how Mario Bava became a horror director, or how Sergio Leone, a second unit director on a few, was best known later for Spaghetti Westerns. And there is certainly some truth to the idea that, if you have seen one, you’ve seen them all. But there are certainly some good examples of the genre that are worth seeing.
Goliath and the Dragon (1960)
Don’t be fooled, this is a Hercules movie, but they renamed it because of some begobbled distribution rights issue.

If you were a Greek mythology kid (and most nerdy kids went through a phase they were into sharks, dinosaurs, Greek mythology, AV/Radio, writing in Dwarf runes under your desk after reading Tolkien for the first time, and lego) you might remember reading about Hercules’s semi-tragic end, poisoned and killed by his own wife and a centaur. It was the most fascinating story, where Hercules’s great strength and courage was defeated by jealous and anxious little people who tore him down. Americans don’t have much of a taste for tragedy, so it’s very seldom been adapted for American audiences.

Goliath and the Dragon is that story. It literally starts with Hercules finishing his hardest heroic Labor, and retiring. However, his younger brother is jealous of him, and a conspiracy of schemers work to get rid of Hercules by manipulating envy. Along the way, Hercules feels abandoned by the gods and he turns against them in anguish after a lifetime of service. It has a dragon, and quests into the underworld, yes, but it is primarily not an adventure film, which is what makes it interesting.
It also stars Mark Forest, who might be the only one of the bodybuilders to play Hercules to have a legit screen presence. He later left movies to become an opera singer and voice coach.
Eric the Conqueror (1961)

This is one by Italian horror titan Mario Bava, and because it’s kind of a well known film, it actually has a half-decent transfer, including availability in the original language instead of a shoddy 70s dub - this is utterly, absolutely unheard of in this genre, where the copies of these movies on streaming (even on Amazon Prime!) are sometimes literally off VHS and have “snow lines” and other phenomenally half-assed signs of VHS transfer, like the original FBI WARNING stickers.
The film is about two Viking brothers, one of who is raised by Christians as a knight, the other of whom grows up the son of a pagan Viking warlord. It’s a film about the contrast between Christian and Pagan, and the one thing about it people remember is that it stars a pair of Playboy Playmate twins. Stylish and action-oriented with lots of red blood, it’s like a cool version of Disney’s “The Island at the Top of the World.”
Hercules in the Haunted World (1961)

Hercules vs. Christopher Lee –need I say more? Christopher Lee is a vampire who took over a kingdom and hypnotized Hercules’s true love, shrouding the land in eerie darkness…and so Hercules has to descend into the underworld. This is a case where the screenshots really tell the story, they get across the eerie, surreal Gothic ambiance of the film. It doesn’t actually feature Castle Greyskull, but it would perfectly fit in with the décor.

As far as I know, Hercules never actually encountered vampires in Greek folklore, but in Italian cinema, they seem to feel that the supreme challenge for the Son of Zeus is the undead (see also, Kobrak in Goliath and the Sins of Babylon).

I feel guilty having two Mario Bava movies on here. But of the two, this one feels the more…Mario Bava, in lighting, design, and ambiance, which is really the reason to see it. Essentially, it’s Hercules Goes to Hell, and it’s treated as more of a truly eerie horror movie, with weird lighting. The presence of Christopher Lee makes it feel like a bodybuilder accidentally wandered onto the set of a Hammer Horror film, with crumbling castles and she-vampires in negligees.
Maciste in Hell (1925)
Tumblr media
Speaking of the essential plot of a muscleman going to hell, you wouldn’t think a movie of that kind would be whimsical, charming, imaginative, and creative, but it is. Satan tries to tempt Maciste, a pure in heart muscleman who represents the pure, incorruptible goodness and strength of the working class. Maciste movies, distinct from Hercules films, always had a strong Marxist undertone, with villains who were super-rich and decadent, all the while Maciste resisted their temptations and hung out with the lower classes and sponsored a revolution. The movie is full in intertitles like “the Dragon – Hell’s Aeroplane!” And the quest by female devils to turn Maciste into a demon himself with a kiss. Essentially, it’s a movie where if you’re pure in heart and have biceps of steel, there’s no problem you can’t bench press, grip, or grapple, even Satan.
According to his memoirs, this was the movie that made Fellini want to become a director.
Hercules and the Princess of Troy (1965)
Tumblr media
Made at the absolute dying gasp of the genre, this one is essentially the “Enter the Dragon” of Sword and Sandal movies, in that it was a Hollywood/Italian co-production, much like how “Enter the Dragon” was the first Hollywood/Hong Kong co-production. It wasn’t a movie at all, but a pilot episode for a television show that never went to series…to everyone’s shame, because if it had been made, it would have been a crowd pleaser, if the pilot was anything to go by. I all but guarantee it would be a syndication favorite that would have turned everyone in it into a star, the kind that would be on Nick at Nite forever, or the earliest incarnation of F/X, where it was just a scrappy rerun network with a pre-Survivor Jeff Probst (I still remember the F/X house all the VJ like hosts lived in).

This one has Hercules (played by Tarzan Gordon Scott) as a sea captain and leader of a Greek ship named the Olympia, who is accompanied by two sidekicks, Ulysses (a young, clever Ulysses as Herc’s sidekick was also a trait of Paul Levine’s Hercules and Hercules Unchained), and Diogenes, Hercules’s smart friend, a medical doctor and proto-scientist who comes off as the project’s most interesting character, a Dr. McCoy like curmudgeon who adventures to stay away from his awful wife, who creates a chemical that burns on water and who uses the Socratic Method to solve a murder mystery. If this had gone to series, I can see him overshadowing the theoretical leading man in a similar way to Jonathan Harris as Dr. Smith overshadowing the Robinsons.
The pilot was great fun. It had mythological creatures like invulnerable horses and a terrifyingly unique sea monster, that was some of the earliest work by the now legendary Carlo Rambaldi (creator of E.T. and the Alien) that is light years ahead of the shag carpet dragons musclemen pretend to wrestle in movies like this. Not to mention a mystery, and Hercules facing intrigue that, as a trustworthy and direct man of action, he is incapable of dealing with (a trait of nearly every single interesting Hercules movie).
