Favourite colour: A nice dark green. Or black as my cat :-)
Last song: "Roll to me" by Del Amitri. Which I am absolutely certain there was a fanvid of, but I can't remember the fandom and the Leverage one I can find does not feel right. *grumbles*
Last movie: I watched "The Blob" last weekend. Genuine 50s sci-fi horror. The effects were surprisingly decent, considering (fake, absolutely, but not breaking the suspension of disbelief), but the acting - honestly? I now want teenage Lille Per vs cosmic horrors, because that's the vibe I got. So 50s.
Currently watching: "The Legend of Vox Machina". It's okay. I'm never going to be in that fandom, but watching an episode every 2-3 days have been entertaining - once I got past the first two. If I hadn't been spoiled/osmosis'ed ahead of time, I would have gone no further, but once the plot starts happening it balances the alleged humour better - but honestly, as awful openings goes, it's right up there with "De udvalgte".
Other stuff I watched this year: Bit of this, bit of that. Good Omens, of course. A Korean Odyssey, where I enjoyed the side characters far more than the main couple. The Woman King, which felt incredibly US military movie, which I suppose is faif, as that's what it is. Wakanda Forever because Namor. Other things.
Shows I dropped this year: Not a show as such, but - I've finally dropped the MCU. As in I've stopped watching every movie in cinemas (honestly, I've mostly quit cinemas these days). I'll watch an individual movie if it interests me (*points to favourite angry merman*), but I doubt very many of them will.
Last book: "City of Bones" by Martha Wells. Which has a lot of the stuff you also see in her newest work - especially the non-human protagonist that does not fit in among his own kind. The novel itself is okay - post-apocalyptic high fantasy.
Currently reading: Since the publication of the last volume is finally within sight, I've started reading "Heaven Official's Blessing". So far so good, though the main character feels a bit bland. Also reading R.F. Kuang's "The Poppy War" and finding the parallels to Chinese history at once extremely heavy-handed and at the same time curiously - revisionist? Oh, it totally wasn't the fantasy!English they fought Opium Wars with, it was the fantasy!Japanese. But I'm only about 100 pages in. We'll see.

Tagged by @st-just (thanks!) to just press shuffle on my general listening playlist 10 times and relate the results.
Thing is, I don't have a general playlist, only current ones, and I'm currently making a mixtape of execution ballads. So sadly, you're not getting any variety. You're either getting a preview of the project (I wanna make a booklet for this, I'm aiming for the moon, baby!), OR, since the grander the project the higher the chances of me never finishing it, a taste of what could have been.
The Dubliners - Sam Hall (a classic execution ballad with many versions, some of which brim with rage, while this one is rather stoic and dignified)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Up jumped the devil (a song about a man doomed from the start to play the villain's part, and the origin of this blog's #swinging from the gallows tree tag)
Johnny Cash - 25 minutes to go (peak gallows humour at Folsom Prison, uproariously funny and defiant, and somehow still conveying the terror of a man who doesn't want to die)
Let's Play Dead - Heaven and Hell (an execution ballad recently written for the series Harlots)
Brown Bird - Gallows (an alt-folk song not strictly about gallows, but adjacent)
Joan Baez - Long black veil (a country ballad about a man falsely accused of murder, who lets himself get dragged to gallows because he won't reveal his alibi: an affair with his best friend's wife)
Ewan MacColl - Go down ye murderers (a folk song about Tim Evans, who hanged for the murder of his wife and child in 1950; the real murderer confessed 3 years later, and the case played a major role in abolishing capital punishment in the UK)
The Tiger Lillies - Hang tomorrow (the pioneers of dark cabaret reimagine Brecht's Threepenny Opera, and here, disturbingly, take all the suaveness out of Macheath)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat (the Mercy Seat is the electric chair, and this is a torrent of a song, a whirlwind, a masterpiece, a 7-minute cynic snarl)
Saga de Ragnar Lodbrock - Ballade des pendus - The OG Ballad of the Hanged, written in the 15th century by the OG poète maudit, François Villon. It paints an indelible picture:

#d&d #ttrpgs #mystery #magic #there's a reason 'occult detective' is a whole trope #it's the whole fantasy here #i'm going to take my cool toys and use them to solve mysteries #and i'm going to face horrifying enemies who ALSO have access to cool toys and use them for distinctly darker sorts of fun
How would you handle a murder mystery in D&D? A lot of spells would make short work of most mysteries (speak with dead, zone of truth, various command spells, etc). Now of course those spells do have limitations but still.
Does the party you're currently running the adventure for have access to these abilities? No? Then don't sweat it. Part of leveling up is gaining access to abilities that let you circumvent certain types of adventure ( such as teleportation letting you skip minor travel). Mysteries are best run low level when the culprits are mortal with mortal motives.
Agatha Christie It: one of the hallmarks of detective fiction is that due to circumstances, all the suspects of the crime are bottled up in the same location, letting the detectives ( and audience) have a limited number of targets to chose from as they build up a case. Have your mysteries happen in isolated places with a limited number of variables to sort through.
Magic can only go so far. Any society that knows about magic is likely to have laws about when/how that magic can be used, especially in matters of law. Cornered your likely suspect and used dominate person to force out a confession? A) the party aren't lawmages recognized by the magistrate, that confession isn't reliable in court B) someone ensorcelled could be compelled to say anything, so enchantment isn't trustworthy. C) Using magic against someone in that way is tantamount to threatening them with a weapon, hope your party is prepared to also go to court.
A good mystery is all about piecing together incomplete information, meaning that no one person ( and thus no one spell) contains the complete truth. The dead person won't necessarily know what killed them, just who they suspect, and any good killer would know they needed an alibi/decoy in order to throw off witnesses. Having your party pick through these clues is the fundamental fun of solving mysteries.
Likewise, it's not enough to know that someone did the crime, the party has to PROVE it, which requires gathering more evidence than just a magically compelled confession. Sure a spellcaster could kit themselves out for solving crimes, but that just means the murderer is liable to take a swipe at them while the gang is split up and searching for clues.

REC: icarus_chained - Courage of the Fearful - Multifandom [Archive of Our Own]
URL: https://ift.tt/87vuhfJ by @honourablejester After an almost alien invasion in Gotham, and a goddess' response, there are a lot of things Clark Kent should be worried about right now. He probably hasn't chosen the right one. But all questions of morality and even theology aside, Gotham is afraid of him. And he's not sure he can bear that. So. He has a decision to make. tagged by @lafcadiosadventures, hi!
Tag someone you want to get to know better! Or just check in with.
Favorite color: black (I give a different answer every time they ask me)
Last song: Fantastic Negrito - In the pines. This whole album is shivers.
youtube
Black girl, black girl, your man is gone Now you travel the road alone And you raise that child all by yourself Then the policeman shot him down
Black girl, black girl, where will you go? To the place where the cold winds blow In the pines, in the pines where the sun don't shine I shivered the whole night through
Well I know that your heart is breaking Into one million pieces I know that your heart is breaking, I know Where did you sleep last night?
Last movie: Umberto D. (1952) Classic Italian neorealist specimen.
Currently watching: Star Trek: Lower Decks, Critical Role c3.
Other stuff I watched this year: Fucked up movie of the year was Inside (2023), with Willem Dafoe and…. no one else, basically. The premise is intriguing and a bit misleading: "The film follows an art thief who is trapped inside a luxury penthouse, slowly losing his grip on reality". But it's not a heist flick, and it's not a survival thriller about obscene wealth and/or weird technology oppressing simple thieves folks, it's a movie about Art, and it's fucked up (honorific), and holy shit Dafoe's performance.

Also good movies: The Menu (2022), The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), Holy Spider (2022), Argentina, 1985 (2022), Mad God (2021), The Naked City (1948), Nimona (2023), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021, thanks @tuulikki!). I kinda slept on new stuff, it's been a weird year.
Good shows: Babylon Berlin, The Last of Us, Succession, The Bear, and there's a bunch of good stuff coming out later (Yellowjackets, Severance, Chainsaw Man, The White Lotus, Interview with the Vampire, and SOME DAY Arcane and Russian Doll).
Shows I dropped this year: None (I chose wisely!)
Last book: Primo Levi, If this is a man (HOW had I not read this yet)
Currently reading: A book about the cuisines of yore of various greek minorities in Turkey. As a result, I am constantly hungry.

I agree. This might be the farming sim I've been waiting for (never been too keen on Stardew Valley's psuedo-modern setting), and the perfect gateway to Failbetter's library of work (I curse myself to this day that I didn't play their Dragon Age game, The Last Court, when I had the chance)!
So, Jester Most Honourable! While I know you're currently on a Daggerheart kick (and admittedly making me at least a touch curious about it!) had you heard the announcement from Failbetter Games of their newest project, Mandrake? :D
I had, but only in passing, I hadn't looked into it. Having looked now, it does sound absolutely charming. An eldritch farming sim focused on folkloric magic with the spirits of the natural world sounds excellent. But then I love anime like Mushishi and Natsume Yuujincho, and there's a bit of things like Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell in there two. Also Dredge, for the eldritch fishing sim. Heh. Yeah, it sounds cool.

Favourite colour: Black and purple are kinda both it, depends on the day
Last song: as in last song i listened to? Or last song i actually chose to listen to? Because i have no idea what song was last on the radio this morning xD Last song I actually chose to listen to was Flickenpuppe by ASP
Last movie: made my parents watch M3GAN with me because i think that movie is hilarious xD
Currently watching: just finished watching A Discovery of Witches which was kinda meh imo.
Other stuff I watched this year: Um...a fuck ton of you tube stuff? XD s3 of Ragnarok which would have been great if the last episode wasn't so bad. Kohlrabenschwarz. Tried to catch up on Only Murders in the Building. And that's about all i can remember right now
Shows I dropped this year: don't think I've dropped any shows, just haven't quite finished one (Only Murders in the Building)
Last book: Dead Mountain by Preston and Child. Not a bad book but the lads are getting a tad predictable in how they structure their stories
Currently reading: fanfic, that's basically all I'm currently reading xD

For the Halloween asks: 1, 6, 22, 29, 32 :)
1. When you die, what do you want done with your remains?
Well, honestly, I’m not much bothered. Cremation is fine, burial is fine, whatever happens happens, I won’t be in there to know, I’d say. Will most likely be cremation because that’s what’s kind of getting more and more popular here in Germany. I’ve also got an organ donor card so maybe that might happen depending on circumstances.
6. Do you have a Deja Vu story?
Hm, not a story as such, I guess, just random deja vu moments. Like really random. Nothing really interesting though.
22. Do you go to haunted houses?
That depends, haunted houses as in the amusement park rides? Sure. Actual haunted houses, don’t think I’ve ever been to one but there aren’t really that many of those in Germany I think, at least not any popular ones. I’ve been to a theater in London that’s supposedly haunted by a dead usher or something but no ghosts turned up (most likely because they had watched that show so many times it got boring ;))
29. Do you believe in monsters?
That’s very much a question of definition, isn’t it? People do all kinds of horrible things to each other every day so there are definitely monsters in this world (of the human-shaped variety).
As for the supernatural kind well, who knows, they might well be out there. Or maybe they’re pretending to be neighbour Bob who goes for a pub crawl with a nice mauling later every full moon with his fellow werewolves. As long as he doesn’t leave the remains in the stair case I won’t judge ;)
32.Weirdest coincidence?
Hm...I’m not exactly sure. Weird in what way? Don’t think I’ve ever had coincidences in a spooky way. Mostly it’s just stuff like randomly meeting people from back home while on holiday or finding out someone you met online doesn’t live all that far away or something.
Thank you for the ask :)

@honourablejester tagged me in a thing! The idea is to answer 11 questions, and then tag 11 people to answer 11 different questions.
my questions from honourablejester:
1. What’s one area of interest you could cheerfully talk about for hours? my favorite characters/shows! my poor brother has actually had to listen to me do this (on multiple occasions) 2. What mythical creature would you most want to transform into? oooh maybe a dragon?? honestly I just really want flying abilities. ;p 3. Did you ever have an imaginary friend? yep, but literally all I can remember about her is that she had black hair and her name started with the letter ‘E.’ (I was a terrible friend to my imaginary friend, apparently) 4. What do you normally have for breakfast? either cereal or a protein bar, plus tea if I have time. 5. What’s your favourite costume in movies? it’s not one specific costume (more like a costume type) - but I’m honestly a huge fan of rugged gear that looks like it’s been somebody’s go-to outfit for literal years. With lots of pockets and/or stuff hanging from their belt. (examples: han solo, rey, ronon dex, basically all of the main rogue one squad) shh i know ronon isn’t a movie character but i wanted to include somebody who wasn’t in star wars 6. Favourite fruit? probably grapes! I do enjoy most types of fruit, though. 7. Sweet or savoury? sweet. 8. Name a colour combination that you really like? oooh I’m not sure, I’ve actually never given this much thought before. maybe blue + grey? 9. Adventure, Fantasy, or Horror? fantasy! 10. What’s the first book/story you remember reading? oh man.... maybe the Magic Tree House series? 11. What’s one place in the world you’d really like to visit? either Canada or Australia!
if anybody wants to do this (no obligation though!) I’ll tag: @clintbartnn @demigodofhoolemere @philcoulsonismyhero @squireofgeekdom @liz-alfos @ussbones @acelukeskywalkers @bleuskais @aslanscompass @blackswidows @space-atoms
1. Do you have a favorite book? (Or book series?) 2. What is your favorite type of weather? 3. Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate? 4. What would be your dream job? 5. Do you prefer writing in pen or pencil? 6. Cats or dogs? (Or neither?) 7. What character(s) do you most relate to? 8. Do you read more fiction or nonfiction? 9. Do you have a favorite holiday? 10. What was/is your favorite subject in school? 11. What are some of your favorite music artists?
#honourablejester#tag games#sorry this took me so long to do!!!! i am terrible at coming up with questions#as always - no pressure to do this if you don't want to! <3
