The Man with a Hook for his Head

I've been thinking about Izzy's S2 arc, and storytelling - stories for coping with trauma but also Stede's bedtime stories, and how fitting they are for Stede's and Ed's evolution in S2 (which of course has been wonderfully analyzed in depth already).

I haven't seen anything about the third story though, and I'd like to propose that it's perfect for the 3rd main character, Izzy.

These are the three bedtime stories told by Stede and Ed:

Stede is the wooden puppet who wants to be a real boy - all his life he has been playing at life, pretending to be a husband and father, pretending to be a pirate. In S2, we see him becoming "real".

Ed is of course the Kraken - his central conflict is being unable to control his darker impulses, his perceived unloveableness because he's thinks he is a bad person. In S2, we also see him taking steps to come to grips with that.

The third story is met with derision by the crew ("It's not scary at all!"): the Man with a Hook for his Head.

"And, finally, the man saw who was driving the carriage. It was an elderly gentleman with a hook… for a head!

A hook for a head? How does that work? H-How does he even eat?

He doesn't eat. He's got a hook for a head!

Does it even make sense? No. How does he kiss?

It doesn't kiss. No one likes him."

I'd like to propose that Izzy is Hookhead Man. And for me, this is the scariest of them all. He doesn't eat. He doesn't make sense. He doesn't kiss. No one likes him :(

What even is he? He's an inanimate tool with no feelings and aspirations of his own. He's there to scare people, but isn't really taken seriously. He doesn't make sense at all.

I think this comes pretty close to Izzy's self image in S2E4, and even in S1 (and maybe years before that) this is what Izzy thought he had to be. Work was everything to him. We only see him eating once, and it's this weird performance during his ill-fated stint as captain. We know nothing about his dreams, skills apart from fighting, how he spends his free time. He's Blackbeard's tool, always.

Izzy's whole identity is being First Mate. His head isn't human, it's a pirate's symbol (see also: the only pirate in a muppets movie).

But how do you exchange a hook for a head?

Here Hookhead and Izzy's symbol of growth, the ship's unicorn, come together. The head (or hook) has to be blown off first so it can be replaced with something better. This literally happens to the unicorn because of Izzy's betrayal and to Izzy via Ed's pistol in Ep2 of course.

But we see this building up from the start of S2. The crew start seeing Izzy as a human with feelings, Izzy himself starts questioning his purpose apart from being useful. And from Ep5 onwards, we're seeing Izzy slowly developing into a man with a proper human head, whittling, training Stede, giving advice, just hanging out in the captain's chair, singing and performing, flirting and just being, finally, a real person who eats, who makes sense, who kisses and who is liked.

Brew #360: Arthurstown Brewing Co. Hook Grapefruit Pale Ale

Abv: 4.7%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Grapefruit, watermelon

Pour: Opaque amber with a finger of white foam

Taste: Light toffee malt to begin with but swiftly put to bed by the grapefruit wash. Lovely tropical notes floating around with the tart citrusy grapefruit. Ends on a medium dry bite. Some sweetness in the aftertaste. Not the best beer they’ve done but not bad either.

Brylox has been through a lot of suffering, but he lives by the motto, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”

He was killed in a Forged ambush with the rest of his Warband, save Chaskana, who made it out alive. Instead of being able to pass on into the mists, his soul was captured and fused into the metal body of a Forged Hookhead. He didn’t succumb easily to the forced servitude. The torture meant to make him fall in line only drove him to find ways to work around it. Instead of attacking innocent villagers, he turned his pent-up rage on the awakened forces in the Desolation. He would not lose sight of himself in that burning metal body.

One day, his world was turned upside down yet again. He was subdued and captured by a Sylvari and taken to the Chantry of Secrets where an agent loosened the chains that bound him and allowed his ghost to leave the metal confines. It was there he was reunited with his best friend, Chaskana, and the process towards reforging him a new body began.

I’ll leave it there for now. I’m still figuring out what information they needed to reforge him into a warhound jackal. So far, we’ve got a Charr, two Sylvari, and a Djinn with the combined knowledge of necromancy, a little golemancy, jackals, warclaws, forged, and the exalted. And it all combines to form a beautiful new body for my boy.

On a planet whose oceans are largely dominated by the ancient, radially-symmetric “jetsnake” class of animals, hookheads stand out as one of the few non-jetsnake creatures adapted for aquatic life. Hookheads live in the sub-antarctic volcanic archipelagos of  Yáolán, feeding mostly on the local jetsnake varieties. They are descended from ambulator ancesotors, and retain the ability to move about, albeit clumsily, on land. The “hook” at the top of their mouth is an enlarged tooth used for a variety of purposes including breaking ice and sparring with others of the species.

While they spend most of their lives in the water, hookheads are known to laze about on ice floes, “fishing” in much the same way as their vastly distant fisherman cousins of the Hóng Ocean. The behavior is understood to have evolved completely independently.
