You made it clear to him that there would be no cheating this time.

The rules were simple:

No flying.

No wolf.

You didn’t want another repeat of how you played in the castle a couple of weeks back and this time you were sure to win.

Finding the most sliming and lightest dress you could put on for today had been challenging. It was becoming closer to the winter time and wearing lighter clothing was not the best idea to wear in the morning so, your game was postponed until the afternoon where it was much warmer.

You dragged Alucard to a willow tree that stood a few meters from the castle steps and began the endless rows of bushels and trees. Certainly giving the forest it’s own shroud of darkness even when it was the middle of the day.

“Now you stay here and count to thirty. And remember the rules!” You say and the blonde rolls his eyes. He was no child he knew how to follow directions.

“Yes, yes no ‘cheating’ as you so put it.” He tells you and you nod taking a few steps back from him, while waving your hand to shoo him into his task.

“Go ahead! Start counting!” You exclaim in excitement.

Placing his arms over his head, Alucard pushes his face into the back of the tree and begins to count down from the selected time.

You are quick to leave the man, and with very little time on your hands you searched high and low throughout the forest to see where the best place was to hide would be.

You found a tree with just enough branches for your feet to climb onto and reached the highest branch to watch both the ground below and low enough to somehow vault to the next tree nearby, without any injury.

Hearing the announcement of the number thirty being reached, you crouched onto the branch you were on and held onto the bark behind you to steady you.

Now you waited.

The forest wasn’t quiet, it didn’t help the fact that crows were barking their usual noise and the bushes moving as animals either ran through them or made their home in them.

“Damn it…” you mutter and think it was best to escape to the tree next to you.

Careful of how much noise you made, you stopped moving all of a sudden when a clutter of branches fell from the tree across from you. Looking up, you could see through the leaves that Alucard was climbing the tree while looking around the area for you.

Cupping a hand over your mouth, a loose laugh nearly gave away your position as you watched him struggle a bit from climbing the tree.

Taking this opportunity, you carefully snapped off a branch and threw it into the bushes that was by Alucard’s tree. The noise startled whatever was residing there and the dhampir grins.

Moving back down from the tree, Alucard hops down without the assistance of the final four branches and tiptoes over to the bushes.

His black gloves parts the leaves and inside he finds a rabbit, scrubbing at its face. It looks up at him, curious as to why he was intruding on its home.

“Sorry.” He mutters and releases the bush to bounce back to its original place.

Stifling another laugh, you grab some acorns from your tree and throw one at his back. The small nut went unfazed by the dhampir as he continued looking in the wrong direction.

“Hooty-hoo!” You taunt ducking down in time when Alucard looked in the direction of the sudden call. He cursed his luck.

You knew he couldn’t use his powers because he wanted to honor your wishes by playing fair. But, how can he play fair if what he was smelling didn’t bring a tent to the front of his laced pants. The sweet smell you always secreted was coming from everywhere in the forest and in order to not break the rules and just pounce you, Alucard moved to grab a tree to keep his sanity.

Alucard clenched his jaw and took a couple of deep breaths, this was getting difficult.

Peaking over the bushes, you see Alucard leaned up against a tree, panting excessively. You grew concerned, but kept hidden thinking that it could be a trap to get you to reveal yourself.

You peeked further and looked him over to see if there was anything wrong, until your eyes landed on the front of his laced pants. A nice tent was forming there and you were surprised to see how aroused he had become.

“Interesting.” You say with a sly grin and finally reveal yourself to your lover.

Alucard’s eyes finally land on you and you slither to a crouch once more, your hands on your knees as you spread them seductively. Of course you weren’t wearing anything under there, you never did.

Taking your right hand, you place your pointer and middle fingers and spread your labia; showing what he could have if only he could catch you.

Alucard’s eyes bulge at the risqué sight and is taking chase with a sudden burst of energy. He needed to catch you now, you sloppily jumped from tree to tree laughing all the while.

“You succubus! Wait till I catch you!” He yells.

This went on for the next twenty minutes, you would find a new place to hide in plain sight and just when Alucard would make it, he would get to see you play with another part of your body then move to the next spot.

However, the last instance that broke the camel’s back was when you had jumped to solid ground and was running away from him on foot, the dhampir close behind you.

Just as he was close enough to grab your arm, you lifted up your dress to show your bare ass to him and all you could hear next was a large crash, leaves shook and a low groan.

Stopping, you placed a hand over your mouth in a gasp as you saw your lover laid out on the ground.

“Oh no, are you alright?” You asked as you knelt by his head. His left hand cupped his lower face and you reached out to help him.

“Let me see, I really didn’t think you were going to hit the tree head on like that I’m sorry-” you’re cut off as Alucard’s arms entraps your waist and you’re lower body is pulled to sit on his face.

A squeak leaves your lips, when the familiarity of his tongue enters your lower lips. He moves it in and out vigorously, your moans rising in volume as you ride his face.

Leaning over his lower body, you unlaced his pants and took initiative to pleasuring him as well, his grip on your hips tighten a bit as your ministrations begin. You hum around his length earning a deep groan from below and a shudder.

Feeling your lower belly tighten, you tried to move away from his talented mouth but felt his teeth gently bite on your clit and you released right on his face with a joyous cry.

Ooh, it's the single chart appearance of somebody I definitely know better as an actress. I suspect this song is going to make me want to watch Singin' in the Rain again, I've not seen it in forever. (Also, trivia point if you can tell me what other charting artist we've already heard from who's linked to Debbie Reynolds somehow...)

Tammy - Debbie Reynolds (peaked at Number 2)

I kind of knew Debbie Reynolds could sing - she's known for musicals - but the familiar name was still a nice surprise. I wholly expected this song to be a song from a musical film - and sure enough, it's apparently from a film called Tammy and the Bachelor, in which Debbie played Tambrey "Tammy" Tyree (what an excellent name!)

The film sounds odd, but not necessarily in a good way. It's about a young girl called Tammy, who lives in a Mississippi swamp with her grandpa. A pilot crashes in the swamp and she nurses him back to health and falls in love with him, but he has to go back to his farm to grow experimental tomatoes (?). She then comes to stay with him when her grandfather gets arrested for making moonshine (!) and misunderstandings and romantic hijinks ensue, I guess. It doesn't sound great, but it did spawn three sequels, and it also gives you a little bit of context for this song.

Because the song, after a lush, sweeping string intro, turns out to be a very sentimental little number. We get some swampy scene-setting about how I hear the cottonwoods whisper above, or about how The old hootie owl hootie-hoo's to the dove. The whippoorwill knows it, and the bayou breeze knows it: Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love. And that's it. That's the whole song.

It's very soppy, but Debbie makes it work better than I think most singers would. Her voice cuts beautifuly through the strings, and while she makes the big moments big, she often hangs back a bit, like she's reluctant or shy about admitting she's in love. There's a wistfulness to it that comes through - Tammy's in love, but it's not requited yet, or she doesn't know if it is. And so the second half of each verse takes off giddily, and then she reins it back in, carefully and precisely, reminding herself that he doesn't know how she feels. I'm really coming round, the more I hear it.

It's charming, but nothing I'd expect to have had a huge cultural impact - but you really can't overestimate how much influence a catchy film song has, because apparently, two years later, it's the song that inspired Berry Gordy to name his record company Tammy Records. When that name was taken, he changed it to Tamla - a company that would become well known as a subsidiary of Motown Records. The name seems to be the only real overlap there - Tamla mostly put out R&B, a far cry from Debbie's balladeering here - but it's cool to see the seeds of it, anyway.

So yeah, a sappy ballad, just about rescued by a decent performance. I think knowing the plot of the film helps the song make more sense, though I also don't think I'd enjoy the film particularly. But yeah, it's okay. It's not something I'm going to be putting on repeat any time soon, but I don't think 1950s me would have hated it. There's something kind of lullaby-like and soothing about it, the more you listen, actually. And it's a chance to say hi to Debbie Reynolds, so that's kind of cool.

anyway uhhhh im struggling to focus bc my neck hurts like fuck so im gonna talk abt max and dizzy. and like elaborate on the whole "theyre the same person" thing

so max is my truesona right? his name (maxamillion) actually has a personal meaning to me. my whole life ive fought with identity and ive always had this sort of scattered sense of self. a lot of that comes from childhood neglect and housing instability growing up. every time i move or something bad happens i feel like i get splintered off into another jagged piece of myself, and as life goes on the older pieces get eroded away until i cant even remember who that person was.

i dont want it to sound like DID or something, because its not. its very different. these "other people" never exist at the same time as one another or anything like that. sometimes i can kinda call back how i was at those times in a nostalgic imitation sort of way, but like. its still me? i guess? i dont know.

maxxy is kinda based off the sort of shameless open bleeding wound of a person i was at one time. i was loud and wasnt embarrassed by it. i was open with what i enjoyed. i was clingy but oblivious and sometimes unrealistic.

dizzy is sort of like the more "rational" side of myself. he thinks hes smarter than max because he's been hurt more. hes more familiar with rejection sensitive dysphoria and has been through the same sort of really bad relationship and amicable breakup i went through, as well as the fallout that caused my entire friend group to splinter. hes apprehensive and distant and refuses to trust anyone to an unreasonable degree, hence the quotations.

hes perpetually trying to knock max down a peg or snuff him out. he reminds him how annoying he is when hes loud, he constantly tells him that expressing any emotion about a situation is manipulative. a lot of his character comes from the song hope by roar (among others) and specifically the line "if your hearts upon your sleeve, amputate the arm." hes very motivated by revenge.

really he comes from a well intentioned place, but hes also aware that hes being harmful. he thinks its for the best.

and in his defense max isnt a good person either, not entirely. hes terrified of losing people, but instead of growing distant to avoid pain like dizzy, he becomes incredibly clingy. constantly disarming himself and asking what he would have to do to keep someone around. he has no sense of self and is willing to just drop everything for someone. even if they hurt him. hes also insecure and somehow also full of himself.

but like, they are also literally the same person. the same dog, i guess. but they can interact physically with each other. dizzy looks exactly like max, just with mirrored fur patterns and is more desaturated in color. his hair is also like....greasier. and matted. max has really soft hair but dizzy spends most of his time in bed or just at home so he doesnt take care of himself. sometimes max can convince him to let him brush it. they have a very codependent relationship with eachother. well, okay that makes it sound romantic. its more like a symbiosis sort of thing. parasitic perhaps. theyll kill eachother together but theyll die if theyre apart.

it actually started with like..giving max an A/B/NLM sorta thing (since i do that a lot actually! give ocs traits from a specific media i like a lot. one of my other sonas shrinks when hes upset like cassie from dragon tales) but it sorta just became what it is now. idk why?? i still sometimes draw max with a flower on his head tho lol. its hard not to involve that when hes my truesona and care and paul r like........the focal points of my entire identity and sense of self rn lol. but theyre also nothing like max so i scrapped that.

idk this makes liek no sense lololol. theres far more "versions" that i might flesh out in the future? but for now its just the two of em. hooty hoo

summary: you and shayne both wake up feeling as if you’d slapped by all the demons in hell

warnings: slight vomiting

author’s notes: shitty fluff. also tiny bits of shitty angst. my gift. 

waking up sick is hell, but a stomach tore to pieces, and throat feeling as if you just drank ninety-nine percent alcohol wasn’t bad enough. it just so happened that the man who woke up next to you is feeling worse.

“baby, are you sure you’ll be okay?” you ask softly so you didn’t spike his migraine. you rub his back while he leans over the toilet. he nods.

“i’ll be fine, babe. i just don’t feel good right now,” shayne says, his voice is broken in some parts. it hurts your heart, you don’t feel well either, but seeing the love of your life so vulnerable makes you sad. 

“i’m going to get you some water. tell me if you need anything else,” you inform, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

when you’re in the kitchen you make sure to grab him and yourself some medicine. filling up a glass with water from the fridge, you hear shayne upstairs puking his guts out again. you exhale a sad sigh, this is going to be a hard day. 

shayne appears in the corner of your eye, traveling slowly down the stairs. it’s hard seeing the man you’ve been with for almost a decade sick as all hell. he takes a seat in one of the stools at the counter and looks at you. your heart aches once again.

“here, take this. hopefully it makes you feel better,” he takes the glass of water and ibuprofen you slide him to him, putting the pills in his mouth and chasing them with water. you pour him some pepto bismol into the cup the container comes with and you see his face scrunching in disgust.

“do i really have to, y/n?” shayne pleads, making you chuckle. 

“you just puked up everything you’ve had in the past 32 hours, yes you have to, you dummy,” a small smile forms on his lips. he sighs, waiting a moment before throwing back the cup of bright pink liquid. you take your medicine as well. tossing the allergy meds and ibuprofen back, taking a swig of cold water so you don’t choke on the dry pills.

“how are you feeling?” shayne asks, slight concern weaving through his voice.

“i feel kind of bad, but it’s okay because that’s why medicine exists,” you beam. he smiles at your optimism. suddenly he gets up from the chair and walks to the couch. after throwing himself on the couch, he spreads his arms out.

“cuddles are a great form of medicine, you know,” shayne smiles brightly. you let out a chuckle. he’s so cheesy, you think to yourself.

“fine,” you say, which makes his smile grow wider. if you didn’t know any better you’d think he doesn’t feel like satan just hit him with a greasy frying pan and made him eat seven-year-old lasagna.

as soon as you get in his arms, he snuggles his face in the crook of your neck. he only does this when he feels bad.

you run your fingers through his hair slowly. he has always loved when you do that. he told you that something about it made him feel warm inside. and sometimes when you stop, he puts your hands back.

you stop when you feel how hot his forehead is. the heat is more prominent when you put your lips against on his forehead to see how hot it truly is. 

“shit, babe, you’re really hot,” you tell him. you feel him chuckle against your neck, telling you he took that the other way. “no really, babe, you’re burning up,” you put the back of your hand to his head, checking further. he looks up to you, his face bright red. worry sparks in your chest. 

you unwrap yourself from his arms and run to the bathroom. after finding the thermometer in the medicine cabinet you quickly run back to the couch. 

“shayne, open your mouth,” he obliges. you stick the small object under his tongue. the number on the screen rises quickly an stops at 99.5 degrees. 

“oh wow,” he mutters. “i’m fucked, huh?” you shake your head.

“no, baby. the ibuprofen hasn’t had time to kick in. you’ll get cooler in a bit,” you push yourself up, getting ready to go to the kitchen, but you feel shayne’s hand on your wrist. 

“where are you going?” he asks quietly. you pout slightly at how small his voice sounds.

“i’m going to get you a wet rag to cool you off quicker, babe,” he nods, and whispers an “okay” before letting your wrist go. you quickly return with a damp wash rag. sitting down next to him, you pat the rag over the parts of his face that were red because of heat. his eyes close a bit and he leans to the side slightly. “baby, go to sleep if you want to. you need rest.” nodding again, he lays down. 

because you’ve been taking care of your boyfriend, you forgot you were sick as well. dizziness washed over your body from all the getting up. sitting the rag on the coffee table, you lay down next to shayne. he immediately reacts to your presence by wrapping his arms around you again, bringing you closer to his chest. 

“i’m glad you’re laying down too because i wasn’t going to sleep without you. and i hope you know that,” he murmurs, making you grin a bit. “also,  thank you for taking care of me, baby. i know you’re sick as well.”

“you don’t have to thank me, you nerd. i can’t just sit around and do nothing while you suffer. that’d make me a terrible girlfriend,” you tell him. it’s true. you’d be awful if you were to do nothing for him. you love him way too much to do that. 

“i really love you so much, y/n,” he whispers, your stomach filling with butterflies. he’s told you thousands of times, but each time it still made you the happiest girl in the world.

“i love you so much more,” you say against his shoulder. he plants a few kisses on your head and temple. you wrap your hand around his neck and play with his hair for a while, making both of you so drowsy you fall asleep.

MY THOUGHTS ON S2E2 OF TOH:

Hoo boy, this episode was a lot! I loved the interaction between Eda and Lilith, and as someone with a sibling it is SO ACCURATE. Also more Lilith and Hooty friendship, yay!

I also enjoyed getting to see Willow and Gus again, especially with Gus’ new voice. It’s gonna take some getting used to, that’s for sure. It was nice to see Willow’s parents as well (I saw that Amphibia reference too lol).

Now, the meat of the episode was meeting (ha) Alador and Odalia, and man, I didn’t think it was possible to hate Odalia even more than I already did. The whole bit with the necklace was actually really intriguing, and Amity destroying it near the end as an act of defiance was great! Also, the Lumity moments were adorable, especially Luz being a bi disaster over getting saved by Amity.

Also the Golden Guard at the end was very unexpected! I’m really excited to see more of him in the future!!

the beginning

my goodness that owl thing is terrifying! i think we saw it briefly in that one promo but still!

young eda is back!

honestly, i thought eda ran away from home after she was cursed. i guess i was wrong.

when the healing coven dude gives eda the gem and says it's in style for young witches, i'm reasonably sure that's a reference to the fact that her gem wasn't originally meant to be an indicator of her curse. if i'm correct, that idea didn't even come about until "the intruder".

i love how eda has a poster in her room for rats, clearly a paridy of the musical cats. musical theatre nerd eda? anyone?

i'll talk more about this later, but we finally get to meet eda's mom! i like how she isn't painted as good or evil, just in between. she also seems to share eda's distaste for the coven system (though not as severe).

so even eda doesn't know where the door to the human realm came from, huh? interesting.

it doesn't look like eda's nickname came from her mom, or from lilith, since they both call her "edalyn" a majority of the time. did she start going by eda in school? did it come from her dad? did it come from somewhere else? huh?

i think it's kinda neat how eda's gold fang isn't actually meant to be a tooth replacement. it just makes her look cool. very on-brand for eda.

poor luz, she really wants to see her mom again. i can't imagine what that's like given that my mom is mediocre at best and makes me feel like shit a lot of the time but that must really suck. oops, sorry, too personal? let's move on.

i am a huge fan of how much closer eda and lilith seem to be now. they aren't enemies anymore, and that's great.

so witches can't detatch their limbs unless they're cursed? for some reason i thought that was universal.

okay, now we can talk about mrs. clawthorne. i saw her in the trailer, and i knew she wasn't eda because of her palisman. as a matter of fact, it's interesting that all three known clawthornes have bird palismans (palismen?). "escape of the palisman" reveals that not every palisman is a bird. is it a coincidence? is it a family tradition? i'm leaning more toward the latter.

but wow, gwen clawthorne. right off the bat i knew there would be people simping for her. i mean, people simp for both of her daughters, so it only makes sense. now, i'm ace, so i don't know much about milf, but does this make her a gilf? since she'd the mother of two milfs? (or are they still milfs if i don't want to--? never mind.)

i was expecting to dislike gwen, but i honestly ended up enjoying her character. sure, she can be a bit... much... but she loves her daughters.

oh, here's an odd detail. both gwen and eda's names end with "lyn", but lilith's doesn't. coincidence? no?

i would love to hear gwen's "strong words" for belos. let him get told off by an old lady!

i noticed that gwen was from the beastkeeper coven since we saw her in the promo, because i'd recognized the logo on her arm, but i think her controlling the bees was really cool. maybe i know what coven i would join. then again, i'm pretty much with eda on the "covens bad individualism good" front.

also, it looks like badassery runs in the family just as much as bird palismen do.

can we start a petition to help morton stay in business? he deserves it.

it was really interesting to see eda's point of view when she's the owl beast. it looks like she has to fight with the creature from the beginning for dominance over her own body.

okay, let's start at the beginning. of the end. okay.

first of all, it shatters my heart into pieces that lilith is going to live with her mom now. i was just growing to like her, too.

and poor hooty! he found someone who considered him a real friend, only to have her ripped away just three episodes later. i hope she comes back soon.

is episode five going to be the episode where we find out that amity works at the library? (don't answer that, it's a rhetorical question.)

okay, now let's get to the real mind-boggling part: false luz. what--or who--the heck is she?! i've seen a lot of theories about that, ever since we saw the letters at the end of "enchanting grom fright", and we have options. i'll go more into those in the next section.

predictions

belos being behind this new false luz makes a lot of sense, since he's the main bad guy as of now. it's the most likely theory for now, but i feel like it's a bit too predictable.

eda was an option before, but now that she has no powers or access to the human realm, that's off the table.

i've seen theories about amity being behind it, but i suggest a new (and probably false) one.

what about the twins? it could be a situation similar to gwen's determination to heal eda's curse. ed and em seem to care about their sister (more or less), so it makes sense that they would do anything for her to be happy, and for her to be with the person that makes her happy-- even if it means trapping said person in a realm that isn't her own. besides, they're both in the illusions track, and from what we've seen they're very good at it. what if they're the ones who made false luz? i don't know if illusions can interact with things around them, like false luz does with the tissue box, but maybe advanced ones can? also, can you cast illusions in the human realm without a portal? out of all of guesses so far it's probably the least likely, but it's still an interesting concept.

on the topic of illusionists, we also have gus as a suspect. however, we can tell when he's controlling illusions, so surely we would have seen it by now. that does provide an argument against the blight twins being the culprits, but they are both older and more experienced. i'm sure their expertise in their track is similar to amity's in the abominations track, if their parents' expectations of them are anything like their expectations of amity. maybe skilled illusionists can control their illusions with their minds alone? or they can create semi-sentient illusions?

The Owl House: Enchanting Grom Fright: Happy Valentine’s Gays

Happy Valentine’s Day owl ladies, gentleman and non-binary folks! It’s time to finish off this holiday in proper style with a LONG overdue review of enchanting Grom Fright and even longer overdue coverage of the Owl House.  The Owl House was one of the best debuts of last year if not THE best, only in contention because Close Enough also started last year and looks to surpass regular show in terms of quality. But with stunning animation, tons of representation, and colossal worldbuilding. And given how i’m on record for thinking Star Vs went so far down the tubes they bumped into where Cthulu is sleeping, it’s nice to have another magic based show that seems to be on the right track: carefully building i’ts world, supporting cast and for today’s topic main romance. It also rather than just obliquely hint one character was bi and the other pan, actually goes out of it’s way to have a bisexual protaginst with a gay love intrest. As my good friend @jess-the-vampire has brought up quite a bit, star had plnety of options. .but no willingness to actually campaign for any queer rep, the way Gravity Falls head Alex Hirsch tried to, he still gets credit for trying, and Owl House creator Dana Terrace gets full credit for. 

Terrace got her start working on Gravity Falls in line production before working her way up to directing for ducktales, being instrumental in how Webby was animated and how she moves and acts, and being the director for several classic season one episodes including “Woo-Hoo!”, “The Spear of Selene” , “Day of the Only Child!” which was one of my faviorites from season 1 and “The Beagle Birthday Massacre!”. And while I can’t 100% confirm she’s the only part responsible for starting Weblena, given she was director on an episode where a lot of the romantic subtext was in the visuals, she certainly helped so thank you Dana. Thank you a lot. Their adorable. Point is she’s a talented lady and wasn’t satisfied with directing, so she pitched her own show, combining tons of ides and stuff including of all things, Pokemon Red. I checked the article wikipedia had sourced, it was one of her happy childhood memories as it was one of the last things her dad gave her. Awwwwwww. That’s as sweet as it is painful. She’s also currently dating Alex Hirsch, something I was entirely unaware of but find also adorable. Point is i’m glad I looked into her as she’s a very nice person, and very much my kind of weirdo and i’m happy for her sucess and her singuarly weird show that sprung from that sucess. 

Now that part of it’s out of the way the episode itself was an uphill battle as you’d expect. As anyone familiar with this blog is aware, but just in case your new, you tend to hear me bitching about Disney’s handling of queer represntation a LOT

For the most part Disney’s pretty bad at it: There was the string of “FIRST GAY CHARACTER IN AN X” they had going for a while.. that consisted of a character I dind’t realize was gay, a kiss I didn’t see, and a talk with a character who I honestly wouldn’t of been looking for had disney not patted themselves on the back with some giant sized hands because htey saved some pym particles for that occasion. Ducktales was unable to have Penumbra come out as gay more clearly because I don’t know Ducks can’t be day.. but they can be IMPLIED to be gay or pansexual as hard as the crew possibly can so they win anyway. Pixar was able to have a gay lead character for one of it’s sparks shorts out and even focused on him coming out of the closet and it’s very good and something I WILL give Pixar credit for... but not Disney Plus who go out of their way to not mention the lead being gay.. despite the fact the short opens with a gay space cat riding a gay space dog out of a rainbow and then it being revaled our lead is in a relationship not long into the short. My point is the idiots who won’t watch this for having gay characters are just going to turn it off, who cares what they think, why are you like this Disney. They need to do better, and be better and i’m getting tired of this shit.

That being said... this episode is a step in the right directoin as despite having to get past one obstructive asshole, not her words but damn if it isn’t the truth, as the rest of hte execs were fine with having a gay character, Terrace fought hard for it and WON, having a clearly gay character, and a clear road to a gay romace as the lead one, all because she wanted some representation in her works. So to honor this, I present this review in honor of love, effort and saying screw you to not having represntation because money. Join me under the cut and allt hat. 

We open in the owl house, in the owl house, duck dodge push and shove, it’s how we show our love in the.. you get the point. Luz is learning yet another Rune, this time plant runes.. and already something I love about the series pops up: the fact Luz’s rise in skill is gradual but noticable. Each spell noticably improves in potency with time,  going from simple lights to shaping them into simple constructs, and learning to control or time her spells and glpyhs so they launch she she says so, with each one getting more powerful the more she learns. And on top of that osmething I just noticed on rewatch of this episode is her tecnique in finding them evolved, something I dind’t notice the first time because I hadn’t fully caught up and checked this one out to see if Disney would actually let them go through with it.. and they did. Point is her first spell is found by accident, her second by realizing how her magic works fundemntally, both require skilled deduction and on the fly thinking and casting, so she’s already pretty skilled.. but now sh’es ACTIVELY seeking out a new spell here for the first time. She knows how she gets them, she knows each school is tied to a form, and she likely got the plant from williow since that’s her thing and she’s a saint. A demon but also a saint. They can have those too. It’s what I assume relicor is. 

I miss that goblin demon bat man. Point is it shows an evolution in Luz’s thinking: while it’s a subtle thing she took a more proactive approach this time even if it took a lot of practice.. and it pay soff as by the time of her next rune, while it’s once again sorta handed to her she has less time to learn it, almost none, and finds it singed onto a ball.. and learns it effortlessly to the point where by the next episode it’s a crucial plot point. IT’s subtle but clever character progression, and stuff I really enjoy, showing our hero going from a bit inept but not helpless or incomptient.. to a force to be reckconed with and far more clever and strategic than yo’ud expect given her sometimes reckless and almost always happy go lucky attitude. 

Luz worries teaching King about the internet was a bad idea because he gets excited about a literal cat fight which .. yeah... it was a bad idea but not because of that.. but because next he finds someone saying the earth is flat and she wisely yanks it away. It’s.. very sad that the absolutley maddening and easily debunked flat earth theory is still RELATIVLEY more sane than the stuff we’ve had pop up during the trump era and the cornoavirus pandemic. 

But one of the main conlficts of the episode pops up as Luz’s mom messages her and Luz can’t bring herself to tell her anything and just sends a thumbs up.  I do think this episode helps even things from the pilot a bit as it was a bit lopsided: While I got that Camillia was genuinely struggling with how to deal with Luz, and was offered an out and had to take it... the fact she sees NO problem with the normalcy camp, which comes off intentioanlly or not a sa parallel to conversion camps or camps to make autistic kids “Normal”. And as someone whose both bisexual and autistic, I naturally relate to luz way more as someone whose intrests sometimes just don’t quite fit with everyone else, and who dosen’t get how bad some of their actions were.  THat’s why this episode feels like a necessary course correction: Luz is shown to genuinely love her mama and feel guilty.. but we see camilia genuinlely loves and supports her daughter a bit more. While it was clear from the pilot this shows it more, with her genuinely just wanting to know her daughter’s okay and checking up on her, and giving me the feeling that possible consequences or no if something bad WAS happening or she didn’t hear from her for a long time, she would’ve drove up there to get her. It feels like the writers realized the implications they accidently created and wanted to fix it, though I can’t say for certain. But if so good on you for course correcting, not every show does that. 

But King encourages her, telling her she’s doing the right thing by lying and to “trust the demon on your shoulder”. Keep this in mind for later, but that joke is great on it’s own. But soon i’ts time for school and Hooty.. barfs out Luz’s books for her. 

I haven’t been this disturbed since.. (Looks at the clock) About 2 maybe three hours ago when I watched a man have, if apparently shorter than the oriiginal cut as I wanted to see everyone else’s reactions dammit, sex with hiis car which was possesed by the mad ghost of his dead wife. Because that’s the kind of stuff i’m into when i’m not reviewing stuff. And before that Tinky.. just everything about tinky. 

I do not have enough time to get into TInky here or why he exestially horrifies me. Or why Jeff blim is a living god. I will save that for a proper review if I have the time tomorrow. Point is I saw a lot today and that still tops it. Willow and Gus are likewise grossed out and want to leave. 

Cut to school where Luz wonders what’s with all the decorations.. that remind me of this honestly

And frankly given the whole state of the boiling isles it REALLY wouldn’t surprise me if the decorations were indeed well cooked faces. But i’ts Grom time, which means elaborate gromposals (Some Dude asks Skara out with a beating heart and an elaborate medical proposal.. which.. points for effort. And for using an actual heart. Couldn’t get one for mine. ), dancing and someone being chosen for Grom Queen. WHich Willow hints isn’t as nice as that sounds. Before we can get into that though Amity bumps into them and gets into a tizzy before meekly greeting “Luz.. and Co”. which.. not going to lie.. is my faviorite gag of the season. Just htw way she adds them and just the way Willow and Guz both smile widely at it as if to say “That’s us!”. Amity drops a note and snatches it back. This will be important later, you all know why, point is Amity becomes Grom Queen.. and is heavily depressed with Luz following her to find out why.  At the gym.. she does indeed ifnd out why: Turns out Grom is not some mutation of an earthname but is based around a horrifying entity lurking beneath the isles, Gromethious the Fear Bringer, who emerges from his slumber once a year and must be fought back and brings out his target’s greatest fears. Just like groundhog day only with less time loops and rodent abuse. Amity is scared of hers, and i’ll obviously get into this more later, and Luz simply suggests asking bump to opt out and Amity appricates the support. Awwww. 

Luz heads home and we find out Eda is chaperoning and King is mcing. Eda is also rocking a suit. Just damn girl, damn. But Luz considers taking her place.. and gets laughed at, with Eda assuming she’ll have to save her and King just being kind of a dick. I mean he’s a loveable thoroughly cuddly dick but he’s still a dick... just more like a stuffed plushie of one.  So basically exactly like Tinky. Look I mention him more than once in this review he dosen’t put me in the bastard box. It’s a great system.  Naturally this makes Luz more determined than ever to prove herself and she finds Amity in the night, with Amity having been unable to get out of it.. and Bumps a resonable guy, he just wants a substitute and no one wants the job.. except Luz who galdly volunteers and insists ntohing scares her before the giant spider on the back of her head proves otherwise. Because of course it does, spiders are fucking terrifying. Kill then all.. except the pokemon ones. Galvaltula are sweethearts. As are Ariadoses. Sweethearts who can elctorcute or poison you but still. 

So the next way Luz begins preparing.. and by that I mean it’s time for training. Sadly we don’t get an episode of Luz and Amity getting trapped in an 80′s fashion montage... I mean yes Rise of the TMNT also did that plot the same year, but we had two diffrent plots about someone getting trapped in an eldtrich sitcom and a THIRD this year, all entertaingly unique. Though we do get Luz pulling out an otter suit that’s adorable and she sadly still hasn’t worn yet. “This one says i’m an otter, with a dark side”. She also got thrown out of a school dance for.. wearing an otter suit. Okay the other things we saw in the pilot were understandable but htis is just.. baffling. Who cares what you wear to a dance as long as it isn’t horribly racist of nothing at all. 

Damn you flanders and your glorious ass. Point is Amity shows up and threatens hooty’s life because.. he’s hooty. The fact he isn’t dead already is a testiment to how badass he is and how much money he’d cost Eda to replace. Owl Tubes don’t come out of a stygian hole in the unvierse every day you know. That’s only every three years. It’s basic styigan owl tube science. 

But Amity wants her to be ready and that she’ll have to face her greatest fear.. and cue hooty popping up, poking amity in the face and asking if she wants to know her greatest fear. Really he can clearly hear everything in the house given he heard that, so he heard the death threat he just chose to ignore it. That.. was a mistake. And by mistake I mean we get a hilarious cut to the outside of the house as Luz tries to stop her love intrest from murdering her second mom’s tube monster. The result is some bandages and an eyepatch. To be fair that last one was just flaring up from a  previous beating. 

For this solem task of training, Amity has brought in her local disaster bisexuals.. aka her twin siblgins Eldric and Elmyra, whose greatest fears are dying alone and being stuck with Eldric. Both understandable. They conjur luz’s greatest fears which are.. some of the funniest shit I heard all year.. and also very relatable. Human souls in cat bodies, which is genuinely terrifying good job Luz, Jerks on the internet who mansplain things, relatable, and soy milk. 

But Amity knows this is just the openign act. it needs to be something deeper.. so while Luz dosen’t realize it’s probably her mom issues she brings up her issues with her other mom: that Eda dosen’t think she can do this. Hence we get a giant eda putting Luz in a babychair. Before we can unpack how wrong that sentence sounded, Eda comes out, and marvels at how hot giant her is. But she’s quickly distracted from sex with a giant version of herself, which is not an easy feat, by the relization “Wait Luz is going to fight grom isn’t she.. fuck i’m going to have to save her”, though Luz holds firm on doing it to prove she’s fine and dosen’t need to be saved constantly. it’s a good conflict. Eda IS right that Luz is not ready for this alone, that she’s overcompensating and that Eda would, in normal circumstances be the one to rescue her. As we’ll see it’s not her who does it but still, were this any other foe she probably would be. But Luz’s motivations are equally understandable: She wants to help her friend not have to do this and she wants to prove she can do it. She just wants her mentor, the only person in her life up to meeting her that GNEUINELY supported her in magic to respect her. To have faith in her and actually see how far she’s come. And given how her own mother writes off her dreams, if not unrealistically, and before this she had no friends or support system to speak of outside her mom, it’s easy to see why this is so improtant to Luz: she just wants to make the one person in her life whose ever support her actually think it was worth it when in truth Eda already thinks it does and just dosen’t want her to die. 

She’s just not good with talking to her or not condescending to her as her own ego is stacked sky high, probably because the whole curse thing meant Eda was an outcast by default and the system wants to either chain her to one form of magic and one only or shackle her to them as a hired goon. Her ego, while justified, is also a defense mechanism: a way to shield herself from the fact almost no one cares about her and one of the few people who DOES, dosen’t care what she wants or needs. Once the curse happened she lost just about everything and had to rebuild and thus build up walls around herself and kept everyone else at arms length till Luz changed her for the better. It’s just a tragic clash of two wills both with similar problems but both unwilling to talk about them. 

But with time up, our heroes need to get to the diggity dance. So they indeed do and we get some fun sight gags, Willow makes corsages,  that one girl with the cresent head somehow ended up with Mathomule and is not happy, as anyone who ends up with him should. And it’s time for Luz to face her destiny.. in a tux with a tutu because of course, and Amity likes it because also of course. 

IT’s time to rumble, with King getting nervous due to eda’s prodding about mcing since his co-mc gus is really good at it, and introducing our champion.

No wait sorry he’s still trapped in Mojoworld. no it’s still Luz who shows off a seasons worth of skill by easily dispatching the first few fears and saying to grom let’s finish it.. before grom puts a tentacle on her head. 

It’s to downlaod her fear.. which is Camillia. Granted we could all see it coming but still Luz obviously can’t fight her own mother or her own overwhelming guilt.. her mom did hurt her.. but she gets why and just loves her and wants her to be proud but dosen’t know what to do: tell her the trutha nd possibly loose a happy and fufilling life or wait until it all blows up. It’s a painful choice. So luz and king end up running. King runs first because he can’t handle it and Gus talks him back into the groove while Luz runs away because she can’t fight her own mom, understandable, and Gus encourages king to lead the crowd which he does. Amity and Eda follow Luz. 

So Luz is backed down, facing down a monster tha’ts going to go on to everyone else next if she fails... and Eda prepares to interfere.. but it’s AMITY who faces her fear and dives in. And we find out just what her fear was as grom turns into a humanoid shape and rips the letter in half.. it was a grom invitation. Though conviently the who it’s adressed to was ripped out. 

And yeah not going to save this one: It’s Luz. You know it I know it I didn’t even hide it in the intro. Even before the reveal in a bit it was obvious. But it also makes perfect sense. I’ve avoided talking about her character arc up to this point because I was waiting for now. Amity’s growth is the third major arc of the season behind Luz’s slow learning of magic and eventually induction into hexside and eda’s curse, which I lump in with Lilith chasing her since both were mildly entertwined and then entirely are once the reveal hits in the finale. When we meet her she’s an outright bully.. but we slowly see there’s more there. That she’s not really HAPPY or content, is contstantly under pressure by her family name, is outright bullied by her own siblings who don’t understand her. So Luz coming in, seemingly only being intrested in magic because i’ts neat.. understandably bothers her. She’s not a great person, bullying her old best friend because tha’ts what’s expected and being close with outright bullies because of that.. but it’s through Luz she starts to grow, realizing Luz is genuinely nice and genuinely sorry for any trouble she caused Amity, and evne then both cases were causaed by Amity’s own dickishness and outside forces, so it’s easy to see why she defrosts faster. Her siblings realize they’ve genuinely hurt her, and actually try to be good siblings from then on and help her, and slowly Amity learns to truth luz, trust in her, and accept her... and thus accept her feelings for her. There are gradual hints she’s growing attracted to her.. but her walls had to come down first, and it wouldn’t of worked from the outset. The show cleverly has the two build a genuine friendship, two opposities who work well together, so when feelings do happen it feels natural. It’s not “I’m in love with this person because I have to because you can’t be friends with someone your attracted to” bullshit or anything like that, cough star vs cough, it’s just well built catching feelings. I’ts how this kind of thing SHOULD go: niether went in intending for this to happen.. it’s just happening. 

And Amity’s reluctance is painfully understandable, as Luz is the ONLY friend and support she has. Sure she and willow are patching things up, but WIllow would understandably choose luz over her and she’s terrified of loosing the one good thing in her life. Of course Luz would either say yes, and probably will some day, or let her down gently, she’s nice.. but it’s also understandable to be afraid that someone won’t take the reveal well. I’ve been there trust me, it’s easier when you let it out even if you get rejected, but I get it being hard to let out because you don’t want to loose a friend. I did not, and niether would she, but I can see why she wouldn’t want ot take the plunge. At least not yet. We’ll see this summer hopefully. 

But we do get a shiptastic, gorgeously aniamted scene of the two dancing an fightin gin perfect synch, combinging luz’s new use of plant magic with amity’s mastery of abominations resulting in the two utterly decimating grom, likely in part because with two fast moving targets he can’t get a lock on and likely nees more fear and mass to attack multiple targets at once. Or just more tendrils. it’s a quick, beautful sequence that’s utterly glorious, being framed as romantic as any hetero scene of the type and rightfully so. A triumph and well deserving of this praise. 

Our heros have won, get crowns, and King gets praise. All is well.. except Luz drops the crown once she gets home because she feels like she failed and feels lost about her mom.. though at least king gets it “I’m king and queen, best of both things!”. You tell em sister. 

So we end with Luz genuinely responding to her mom, with some montage stuff as we see Gus and Willow poke a fear blob, willow fears bugs, understandable and Gus fears clowns...

And Amity looks out folornly into the night. Camilla responds to Luz.. and mentions letters.. which while Luz brushes those off.. we see someone sent them. And by someone I probably mean king since we now know only eda and him had acess to the portal, and given he was actively encouraging her to lie.. yeah i’m supscious. But we’ll see next season. For now this episode is fan fucking tastic, showing off tons of character development, being representative and sweet as all hell.. and being really funny. Tons of great gags in this one including the turtle guy from an earlier episode being forced to be adisco ball.  This is easily the series best so far and if you haven’t checked it out, please do it’s fantastic as is this show. WE HAVE CONFIRMATION ON THE FAMILY NAME!!!

...Okay, with that out of the way and off my chest, I LOVED this episode! 

Firstly, I love how the show is addressing and exploring Luz’s frustration with Eda not exactly helping her explore witch society, while also admitting that Eda is doing this out of a place of concern and not wanting Luz to be hurt like her. But at the same time, Eda KNOWS that Luz is feeling stifled and she of all people doesn’t want to tell someone else what to do... As she said earlier, it’s best for Luz to figure out how she feels about the system. And while she does, Eda will be supporting her the whole way! Even fixing all of her past mistakes, of a few of which were really hilarious and impressive (the moving, sentient graffiti was an amazing gag)! I just... LOVE how much Eda cares for Luz and is willing to put herself into an uncomfortable situation for her sake!

Principal Bump is actually a cool dude! I had my suspicions ever since Episode 3 (what with him going out of his way to place Willow in the track she wanted to be in... yeah he tried to dissect Luz, but at the time he thought she was just a really advanced Abomination). Then Covention had him say “I failed you as a teacher” to a kid... Which while harsh to say in front of a crowd, is ultimately a line that puts the responsibility on himself, and not the student.

And it shows! I’m not sure if a lot of people in the Boiling Isles just... don’t care for Bellows’ reign in particular. Is there some form of quiet, conscious dissent going on? As a surprisingly benevolent principal (not including the detention), Bump is genuinely willing to look past Eda’s criminal status and even bend the law just so his students (and Luz herself) gain ‘enriching’ knowledge and experience from interacting with a person/people from another world! With Bump, he seems to be the kind of person who’d much rather focus on rehabilitating and helping reintegrate a person into society, over just punishing and isolating them. That I have to respect!

(Although that Detention... thing is a bit too far when it comes to ‘rehabilitating’. Also it’s going to be weird re-watching those scenes knowing the Detention Monster is just a regular dude who acts like a monster for his job.)

Mattholomule is... Well, he’s a jerk like Dana said. Not much else to say here. But he’s also her favorite jerk, so I guess we have something to look forward to! Also, him becoming president of the HAS seems a bit of a pyrrhic victory, seeing as how he already admitted to the club that he lied to get appreciation. He really didn’t think this through, did he?

Also GUS! Gus, my baby boy. He’s incredibly smol, and it’s because he’s actually really young for his grade! That joke with his rebellious illusion was great, and it was cool seeing Emira and Edric as a casual, background-character joke! And when he raised his hand I deadass thought he’d deck Mattholomule in the face (not that I’d blame him). The fact that promotional art for the episode had him getting physical with Mattholomule and Dana joking about getting into a fight certainly didn’t help. Likewise, I was pretty glad to see an episode centering on him (since just about everyone else from the main cast got focus... Not sure if Hooty counts. Would Hooty’s Moving Hassle count?), and it was neat to switch things a bit to have him as the protagonist. I think it’s always neat when that happens, and it helps us see how others see Luz, our main protagonist!

(Willow, you’re so precious and amazing I love you. Looking out for your girlfriend and being the voice of reason.)

But back to what REALLY got my eye... YOUNG EDA! YOUNG EDA HAS ORANGE HAIR! And she’s freaking adorable... You are my angel...

Her being in the Potions track makes sense, but it makes me wonder if that happened before or after the curse? Some of her magic graffiti had the words ‘Hoot’, but that might’ve happened during her time at school? It’d be interesting if part of her interest in the Potions Track was to help curb her own curse, or if later on her school track just conveniently ended up working out. There’s always the possibility that since Bump is willing to accommodate his students according to their needs, he switched Eda to the Potions Track after she got cursed. Who knows? Either way, Young Eda is my precious baby girl... I would give the whole WORLD to you...

(And now I’m a little depressed imagining Eda having innocent, carefree days and fun at school and enjoying her friendship with her sister, only for the curse and/or some other incident(s) to cause a falling-out with the system and disgrace.)

On a minor note, when @disneytva released that one infographic showing off each school track and a corresponding image, we have yet to see the screenshots for the Bard, Fortune Tellers, and Healing Coven? AKA we’ll definitely get more of Hexside this season and I can’t wait!

I really loved reading about Eda’s pranks as a child. What a wonderful trouble-maker who knows exactly what she’s doing. But what I really appreciate is the one report mentioning how she caused an entire lunch fight just to get back Lilith’s lunch money! Lilith shows she cares about Eda (in her own flawed way), and we see how Eda cares for Lilith! I just WANT these two to be happy!

(Also I want to see young Lilith)

I was thinking about it and “Look Hoo’s Talking” mentioned it as well, but there’s a ‘mystery thief’ (AKA the person that stole Luz’s lunch money)? At first I wasn’t paying attention, but then the report specifically mentioned they worked with Eda and Lilith to save the school from the giant, sentient Abomination. Is this the favorite character from Season 2 that Dana talked about??? A peer from Eda and Lilith’s class???

(By the way, did Bump write those reports on Eda’s behavior? Whoever it is apparently had the obligation to clean up the Griffin-vomit but took a break, which... I love you Eda. But that dude totally deserves a break from your pranks.)

It was really touching to see Eda interacting with Hooty this episode. Given the implications that she may have made Hooty herself, it was really kind... But at the same time, I can see why Hooty’s behavior convinced Eda to enroll Luz in school.

And while Eda mentioned that she knows Luz is smarter than the ‘One Witch, One Coven’ nonsense... What if she and Luz have a falling-out because Luz buys into the system???

...I mean, I’m not too sure about that. But mostly, it seems like an assigned track is mandatory. Unless Eda pulls off some special treatment for Luz the human, I REALLY want to see which track Luz will be placed into! Her expertise is light spells, which seems like it’d be in the Illusion track... But we already have Gus, Emira, and Edric. Earlier I discussed with @fermented-writers-block about Luz possibly getting into the Healing or Beast-Keeping Covens, what with her relationship with the symbolism of Azura-Hecate and her own character motifs. I can’t wait to find out!

(Assuming something tragic doesn’t happen to prevent Luz from attending Hexside... could you imagine?)
