Unusual Model Train Sets

A long time ago in 2020, I did a thread on Twitter of unusual model train sets. Mainly to showcase some that don't seem real, but are/were. Here's a selection of such trains.

I pity the fool who doesn't have this set.

Of course. When I think of a hit comedy show about medical personnel during the Korean War, I think a train set would make sense given the context. (Friend of mine said the following:

This has the best '80s aesthetic I've seen for a train set.

As someone who launched Hot Wheel cars in front or over trains, I legit think this concept is fun.

Speaking of Hot Wheels...

As someone who still has this set, I can tell you that while it's fun, it's not compatible with HO tracks. A real bummer if you ask me.

I have a soft spot for train sets based on tractor brands (I have relatives who live in Eastern Washington who collect old tractors). The only unusual thing I could find is when they are a passenger set.

Which makes no sense considering what the IP is.

I don't see the connection between auto parts and trains, but the Photoshopped image on the box is cool.

Again, don't see much of a connection, in this case of NASCAR sets. However, if your train is taking a left hand turn every time it goes around the track then it makes sense (I guess). And that is the list of unusual train sets I could find for this post. This is not meant to say they're dumb. I actually find sets like these quite entertaining and fascinating, particularly the TYCO sets of Rambo, GI Joe, A-Team, and Transformers just for how niché they were. And these came out around the time Shining Time Station premiered.

this is gonna sound weird bc i don't think it's a universally shared childhood experience but stay with me; your blog feels like a sports house party but like Super Chill. like when i was little my mom's friend would have people over every monday for monday night football, and being *every* monday, it's was less of an Event™ and more like. hanging out. kids + partners very welcome (us 4yos would like. play hot wheels), and ppl have nearly nothing in common except we share a mechanic (the host) but it's all positive vibes.

wait omg i love thisss!!! i had something kinda similar growing up. i have a bunch of cousins around my age so frequently the families would get together at my aunt's house just to socialize/get a break. neighborhood kids would end up coming over or cousin's friends, etc. it's suuuch good vibes! just low key, buncha kids doin' their own things in clusters, buncha grown ups drinking wine.

Was watching a YouTube video and the guy was ranting about how shit the girls toys in happy meals were in the early 2000's (there was context I swear but saying it was about iCarly doesn't make it less out of place) and he was like "how did girls deal these toys suck"

My good bitch I simply very adamantly told my parents I wanted the boys toy, which was always something ACTUALLY cool and not something pink, purple, and boring. Sometimes cashiers had the gall to ask if I was sure I wanted hot wheels over a fucking toy barbie brush that'll do shit all and shouldn't have been considered a toy. Child me had rage about boys getting toys and girls getting... Well, nothing fun and no colors outside pink and purple. Toy brands STILL haven't figured out boys like pink and purple and girls like colors that aren't pink and purple.

Today was one of those days that are like 12 and half days. My parents were having a family friend over for dinner and based on the menu I had agreed to cook as usual. I got to the main house about a minute and a half after Family Friend - I took five minutes in the Annex when I got home to try to calm the fuck down because I'd been running on sugar, adrenaline, and spite most of the day. I came in just as my mom was telling her I was running late. She asked if I got "stuck behind that accident too." I unfortunately knew exactly which car accident she was talking about. I just kinda sighed and said, "yeah, but it was my fourth accident of the day." I had to elaborate (while unpacking the groceries and starting dinner prep). Yes, there was the one at 99 and Conifer. There was also the one at Harrison and 9th. There was a (small) one at 3rd and Van Buren when I made a post office run this afternoon. And there was the one this morning (exact location unknown, but a good 50 miles south) wherein My Boss's husband apparently totaled their car. (He's okay, the airbag didn't even deploy. But it sounded like the car was going to be a total loss.) Family Friend was all, "well, let's just be glad we weren't there 15 minutes earlier when it would have been us." I pointed out that if I hadn't detoured around the 9th & Harrison accident that's exactly where I would have been. Everyone just looked at me. My dad noticed I was still practically vibrating and asked if there Anything Else. "Well.... I volunteered to give Boss a ride home so she could get the truck and pick up Dog when he got out of surgery, because obviously Husband couldn't get him up as planned and like ALL the streets were closed so it took us three times as long. Then when I got back to work, I researched whether Boss's Liability Insurance can cover New Boss and/or if her insurance starts immediately (or even retroactively) because she's pretty sure she'll end up needing to testify under oath before some kind of court about all the malfeasance she's found for this one client and the ink on her business license is barely dry. Plus, Loretta Lynn." My Dad (perfectly) just asked if I wanted a San Pel. (I don't drink anymore and my dad cut back on the sugar so a grapefruit san pellegrino is kinda our Hard Time Drink.)

Ya know, I've never been tested. And I'm like ya I'm not on any spectrum, buuuuut I then, once a blue moon, look around my room and realize that living surrounded in probably over 4000 hot wheels cars might be a sign. Then I I forget about it cause I have new Lego set to build. But ya definitely not on any spectrum and y'all can't prove I anything otherwise.
