How to Become a Middleman Millionaire: The Art of Making Money with little to nothing
You don’t need to invent the next iPhone or build a billion-dollar factory to get rich. In fact, some of the wealthiest people in the world don’t sell their own products at all—they connect buyers and sellers, solve inefficiencies, and take a cut.
This is the art of being a middleman millionaire.
What Does a Middleman Do?
A middleman bridges the gap between supply and demand. You find people who need something, connect them with people who provide it, and profit from the transaction. Simple in theory, but execution is where the money is made.
The Blueprint to Middleman Wealth:
1. Find an Inefficiency
Money flows where problems exist. Look for friction—high demand, but low access. Some classic middleman opportunities:
• Connecting businesses with suppliers at better prices
• Helping influencers land brand deals
• Becoming a broker in real estate, freight, or even digital marketing
2. Build a Strong Network
Middlemen thrive on relationships. Your value isn’t what you own—it’s who you know. Start connecting with key players in your niche. The better your network, the more deals you can facilitate.
3. Leverage Other People’s Work
The golden rule: You don’t do the heavy lifting. Let others manufacture, service, or create—your role is simply to connect the dots and ensure smooth transactions.
4. Master Negotiation
Your cut is your power to negotiate. Get suppliers to lower their costs, convince clients to see your value, and always leave room for profit.
5. Automate & Scale
The best middlemen don’t stay in the trenches forever. Once you’ve established a working system, automate and delegate. Build a team, streamline the process, and expand into new markets.
Real-Life Middleman Millionaires
• Jeff Bezos (Amazon) – Started as a book reseller, connecting publishers with customers.
• Uber & Airbnb – Own no cars or properties but take a cut from connecting drivers & hosts with customers.
• Dropshippers & Digital Agencies – Sell products/services they don’t create, relying on suppliers and freelancers.
The Takeaway
Wealth doesn’t come from working harder—it comes from positioning yourself between money flows. The right connections, problem-solving skills, and negotiation power can turn thin air into a fortune.
Are you thinking like a middleman? Or are you still trying to do everything yourself?

12 Year Anniversary
September 26 marks 12 years since I got my CDL. It's a proud moment for me. I've learned a lot over the years and I've compiled 12 life lessons, compliments of my trucking experience.
Perseverance. There are times in life when you have to keep going when you know quitting would be worse. I was under a load and the truck broke down. It was not drivable and I had to find a place where I could take the load, like a cross-dock, so someone else could deliver it. I needed a repair shop that could fix everything and a tow truck that could take me to both. I was in West Virginia and there was no cross dock, no suitable repair shop and no tow truck that would "cross state lines." The only option I had was to order a tow truck 200 miles away in North Carolina close to where I picked up the load so I could tow it back to the shipper. I found a shop in NC that could fix everything. I was exhausted trying to coordinate all of this, but I had to keep going. I was faced with the task of finding a decent pet-friendly hotel, finding a taxi ride there, and getting a rental car. There was no Uber or Lyft. By the grace of God I found a taxi company that could transport me and my dog and it was cash only. That 2 weeks I spent in the hotel was a transformative time for me; I turned something "bad" into something good. I ended up missing a Hank concert but I was able to resell the ticket online. I had been losing weight for several months then and I bought some new clothes, including a few bathing suits. I spent time at the pool getting sun. It was fun driving the rental car around and going to places I normally couldn't access in the truck. I took care of myself, taking bubble baths in the evening. My truck left the repair shop better than ever; those guys even got to fix a few things that were already not working great like the air conditioning. Just because circumstances seem dire does not mean they have to stay that way... make it work for you and you will come out on top.
Tumblr media
2. See beyond the surface; don't take things at face value; remain curious. What you see is not always reality. This applies to what the broker tells me about a load. A load was recently posted on the load board and it was requesting 24' of space, and/or a lift gate. My box is 22' without a lift gate. I called on it anyway to see if it really needed 24’. The broker said, "well, the customer is requesting 24', but we don't know the actual dimensions, but I'll call you if it's something that would fit on your truck.' Then an hour later they reposted it saying it's 20' long, so I called them and was able to book it. I get to the shipper, and the freight ended up being 2 standard size 4' pallets, lol. You can miss out on opportunities if you believe what you see is written in stone and 100% truth.
There are also so many times when my truck is in the dock to load or unload and I walk into the door while passing numerous signs that say "Safety vest required beyond this point" or "Safety glasses and earplugs required" or "No drivers allowed on the dock" and the pleasant people there will invite me in to the dock on their floor without abiding by all of the posted "requirements." There are times when the signs mean what they say, but many times employees don’t seem to enforce them.
Tumblr media
3. You can’t be everything to everybody. I meet a lot of people who insist I should spend $10,000 on a lift gate, or spend however much money on a second axle so I can “haul more weight” and “get more loads.” I’ve driven a straight truck with a lift gate, tag axle, and reefer box- as spec’d out as you can get- but it had one huge drawback. The inside width of the box was too narrow to have 2 standard size pallets side-by-side. So I  was limited on the number of pallets I could haul. Even with a 53’ dry van trailer, you still cannot haul anything requiring refrigeration. Even if you do have a reefer trailer, you can’t haul anything that requires a flatbed. It doesn’t matter how much weight you can haul or the dimensions of your trailer, you will never be everything to everybody. So maximize what you have with the customers that can use you the most.
Tumblr media
4. Resourcefulness. This includes shopping at truck-friendly Walmarts and stocking up on groceries and gallons of water that don't cost $4+ like they do at the truck stops. It’s repurposing old clothes into rags. It means washing clothes before my hamper looks like Santa’s pack. It’s fun cooking in the truck, and convenient when it would take too much time to stop and buy something. I can pull into a rest area to take my federally-mandated 30 minute break and cook a couple eggs and sausage links in my microwave and have time to do other things.
Tumblr media
5. It's not really a load until it's on the truck. The only sure thing is what is currently happening. Trucking can be very in-the-moment. In my corner of trucking, most loads happen without much notice. I’ve booked a load and the broker calls back and says it canceled or the customer changed their mind and wanted a team. It doesn't happen often, but it may be hours later after I've started planning out the load and said no to anything else that came my way. I may have even already started driving in that direction. There's really nothing I can do about those situations except control my attitude. I say to myself, "That's ok, something better will come along."
Tumblr media
6. Taking care of my equipment. I've driven for many people who bought a truck, but they had very little interest in maintaining the truck or repairing what was wrong or what was about to go wrong. You either pay now or you pay later. If you want your truck to slowly look like crap, just stop fixing the little things. Pretty soon they will compile into one huge expense of time and money. Your truck will tell you when something is not right. It may be subtle, but it's up to you to notice it and to do something about it.
Tumblr media
7. Have an open mind regarding the things that “seem impossible/probably cost too much/are too difficult/would take too much time.” Some things in life, or on the truck, haven't worked in a long time or ever, but I’ve given up on them because my belief is they are gonna be so dramatic and complicated to repair. Once I get out of my own head and allow someone smart, knowledgeable, and with the right “can-do” attitude to look at it, and it doesn’t take years or all my money to fix, I feel silly about how much stress it caused me.
One time my truck had a cold coolant leak. It was only leaking coolant when the engine was shut off, like overnight. It was coming from the back of the engine. A mechanically-knowledgable friend advised me that the engine would have to be taken out for them to get back there, which would be really costly. This fear-mongering was coming from someone I trusted. I believed him, and for months I would continue to add coolant every morning. I made sure to stock up on plenty of coolant when I went to Walmart. However, after some nudging from another friend, I finally took it in to my trusted shop and it ended up needing 2 new quick connect fittings and cost just over $300. All that worry for nothing!
Tumblr media
8. No deal is better than a bad deal. Do you feel like you are taking yourself hostage because you don’t believe there will be anything better? If you say yes to a bad deal, you say no to everything else you could have had. The perception of loss stings twice as much as an equivalent gain. If you aren't going to make a profit, you will resent yourself. Never be so sure of what you want that you wouldn't take something better.
Tumblr media
9. It's a good deal if you think it's a good deal. Price isn't the only factor that goes into a deal. It's important to think about the long-term relationship with that broker and how much we can collaborate in the future. There may be money left on the table, but if the other side feels like I beat them up in order to get every last penny, they aren't gonna want to work with me again. Location is important; if the load keeps me in a good freight lane, that is valuable. If I like the rate, the freight, the area where it’s going, and I know I can get a load out of there, then it’s a good deal.
Tumblr media
10. Believe in your potential and your value. I only want to work with people who see the value in what I offer. There are brokers who get excellent rates and brokers who get very low rates. Not everyone believes you should run at the rate you want. It is all dependent on their beliefs and experiences. I don't need to explain my rate. Ronald Reagan said "If you're explaining, you're losing."
Tumblr media
11. Have a calm confidence. When I’m driving, I have a certain confidence and assertiveness about me. I don’t get upset easily if people are driving offensively. I’m able to stay calm regardless of what is happening around me. Because of the truck’s size and slow acceleration, people often get impatient and want to pass. I don’t ever let myself feel like I need to hurry up for the people behind me, especially on 2-lane roads where I may have to go slower than the posted speed limit.
Tumblr media
12. Anything can happen; success is closer than you think. That next load or opportunity is right around the corner. Sometimes my phone is quiet and the load board doesn't have anything good. Freight can seem slow because nothing is popping. It can be easy to feel down as a result. But then something good will hit and it turns everything around. I prepare myself with the belief that I'm gonna get that call and it's going to happen. And if I’m in an area for a few days and don’t wanna end up there all weekend, I will just drive to a better location. You can’t always wait around, you gotta set yourself up to be successful.

How Does Uber Influence Urban Planning?
Tumblr media
Uber faces strong competition in the ride-share world. Many other companies, like Lyft, are trying to win over riders. To stay competitive, Uber uses several strategies. They offer special deals and features to attract more users.
One way Uber competes is by offering discounts to new users on their first ride. This makes trying Uber cheaper. Uber also rewards loyal riders with deals. For example, Uber Rewards lets users earn points for each ride. These points can be used for discounts. Or, these points can be used for upgrades. This keeps users coming back. It can also lure them away from other services.
Uber invests in new technology. They are working on self-driving cars. This could lower costs and make rides cheaper. Uber uses data to improve their service. For example, they track where people use Uber most. This helps Uber send drivers quickly to busy areas. By staying ahead with technology, Uber hopes to: Offer a better experience Outperform rivals.
Uber competes in another way by expanding its services. It offers more than just rides. Uber Eats delivers food from restaurants. Uber Freight helps businesses move goods. This range of services makes Uber more useful. When people use Uber for different needs, they are less likely to switch to another company.
In summary, Uber handles competition by offering discounts and investing in new tech. This helps them stay ahead in the market. By focusing on user needs and innovation, Uber aims to keep its place as a top choice for ride-sharing and more.

Raquel Urtasun, founder and CEO of self-driving truck startup Waabi, has been working for the past 20 years to develop AI systems that can reason like humans. The AI pioneer was the chief scientist at Uber ATG before launching Waabi in 2021. Waabi was launched with an "AI-first approach" to accelerate the commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles, starting with long-haul trucks. "If we could actually build a system that could do that, it would require a lot less data," Urtasun told TechCrunch. "It would also require a lot less computation. If we could do the inference efficiently, we wouldn't need to have a fleet of vehicles around the world." Building an AI-powered AV stack that perceives the world like a human and reacts in real time is what Tesla has been trying to do with its vision-first self-driving approach. Apart from Waabi's familiarity with using lidar sensors, Tesla's fully self-driving system is different in that it uses "imitation learning" to learn how to drive. This requires Tesla to collect and analyze millions of videos of real driving situations to train its AI models. Meanwhile, Waabi Driver does most of its training, testing and validation using a closed-loop simulator called Waabi World, which automatically builds a digital twin of the world from data, runs real-time sensor simulations, creates scenarios to stress-test Waabi Driver, and teaches the driver to learn from their mistakes without human intervention. The simulator has helped Waabi launch commercial pilots (with a human driver in the passenger seat) in Texas in just four years, many of which have been made possible through a partnership with Uber Freight. Waabi World is also helping the startup achieve its goal of fully driverless commercialization, which it plans for 2025. But Waabi's long-term mission is much grander than just trucks. "This technology is extremely powerful," Urtasun told TechCrunch in a video interview, standing in front of a whiteboard with hieroglyphic-like mathematical formulas written behind him. "This technology has an incredible ability to generalize, it's very flexible, it's very fast to develop. And in the future, it could potentially be expanded to a variety of uses beyond trucking. This could be robo-taxis. This could be humanoids or warehouse robots. This technology can address any of those use cases." Waabi's technology will first be used to scale self-driving trucks, and the startup was able to close a $200 million Series B round led by existing investors Uber and Khosla Ventures. Strong strategic investors include Nvidia, Volvo Group Venture Capital, Porsche Automobil Holding SE, Scania Invest and Ingka Investments. The round brings Waabi's total funding to $283.5 million. The size of this round and strength of participants are particularly notable given the hits the autonomous vehicle industry has taken in recent years: In the trucking space alone, Embark Trucks closed, Waymo decided to suspend its autonomous freight business, and TuSimple closed its U.S. operations. Meanwhile, in the robotaxi space, Argo AI faces closure, Cruise lost its license to operate in California following a serious safety incident, Motional cut nearly half of its workforce, and regulators are actively investigating Waymo and Zoox. "Raising capital during tough times actually builds the strongest companies, and the AV industry in particular has seen a lot of setbacks," Urtasun said. Still, AI-focused companies in this second wave of autonomous vehicle startups have raised some impressive funding this year. UK-based Wayve, which is developing a self-learning system rather than rules-based for autonomous driving, closed a $1.05 billion Series C round led by SoftBank Group in May, while Applied Intuition raised $250 million in March at a $6 billion valuation to bring AI to automotive, defense, construction and agriculture. "From an AV 1.0 perspective, it's clear today that it's capital
intensive and very slow to progress," Urtasun said, noting that the robotics and self-driving industries are lagging behind with complex and brittle AI systems, "and I think investors are not very keen on this approach." But what investors are excited about now is the potential of generative AI, a term that wasn't in vogue when Waabi launched, but that still describes the system Urtasun and her team created. Urtasun says Waabi's system is the next generation of genAI, one that can be deployed in the physical world. And unlike today's popular language-based genAI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Waabi has figured out how to create such a system without relying on huge datasets, large language models, and all the computing power that comes with them. Urtasun said Wabi Driver has a good ability to generalize, so rather than training the system on every data point that has ever existed or may ever exist, the system can learn from a few examples and safely handle the unknown. "That was in the design: We built a system that perceives the world, makes abstractions of the world, and can reason based on those abstractions about 'what happens if I do this?'" Urtasun said. Urtasun says this more human reasoning-based approach is much more scalable and capital efficient. It's also essential for validating safety-critical systems that run on the edge. You don't want a system that takes seconds to react or the vehicle will crash, he said. The partnership was announced The company plans to deploy Nvidia's Drive Thor on its self-driving trucks, giving it access to automotive-grade computing power at scale. On the road, Waabi drivers seem to understand that there is something solid ahead and they need to drive carefully. They may not know what it is, but they know how to avoid it. Urtasun also said that drivers are now able to predict the behavior of other road users without having to be trained in different specific situations. "It understands things without us telling it: the concept of objects, how objects move in the world, that different objects move differently, that there are occlusions, that there is uncertainty, how to act in heavy rain," Urtasun said. "It learns all of this automatically, and now it learns all these capabilities as it is exposed to driving scenarios." She noted that Waabi's single, streamlined architecture can also be applied to other autonomous use cases. "If you expose a robot to tasks in a warehouse -- lifting things and dropping things -- it has no problem learning to do that," she says. "If you expose it to multiple use cases, it can learn all those skills together. There's no limit to what a robot can do."

Uber vs. Lyft: Analytics Extravaganza
If we love to do anything here at Calcbench, we love digging into the footnotes to excavate fascinating nuggets of financial analysis. So when Uber ($Uber) and Lyft ($Lyft) both filed their third-quarter earnings reports the other week, we got to work.
At first glance, Uber dwarfs Lyft in almost every way. Most notably, Uber had roughly nine times the revenue as Lyft ($9.3 billion versus $1.16 billion) and almost the same multiple on total assets ($35.95 billion versus $4.48 billion). Uber also had a positive number for net income ($219 million) which is more than we can say for Lyft (net loss of $12.1 million).
More than that, Uber also dwarfs Lyft on several non-GAAP metrics too. For example, Figure 1, below, shows total gross bookings — that is, the total amount paid for a rideshare trip, including taxes, tolls, the driver’s share of the payment, and everything else — for the last seven quarters.
Tumblr media
For those who don’t have a magnifying glass to make out Lyft’s numbers, average quarterly gross bookings for Lyft was $3.16 billion. For Uber it was $30.8 billion. On the other hand, Lyft’s gross bookings did rise 32 percent, compared to 33.4 percent for Uber — so even though Lyft is starting from a far lower floor, its growth in bookings has kept pace with Uber.
Here’s where things get interesting, however. Gross bookings might not be the best comparison between Uber and Lyft, because Uber has multiple operating segments: Mobility (personal trips), Delivery (food delivery), and Freight, which is mostly logistics services to match carriers and shippers. Lyft, meanwhile, only reports a single operating segment of ridesharing.
This means that some portion of those sky-high Uber numbers in Figure 1 aren’t really fair to Lyft. So can we get a more accurate reading of Uber’s gross bookings for Mobility only?
We can! Dig into the Management Discussion & Analysis in Uber’s most recent 10-Q, and on Page 47 you find a table listing gross bookings by operating segment. See Figure 2, below.
Tumblr media
This changes the proportions of the story, although not the basic plot. Even with those Mobility-only numbers, ranging from $10.7 billion at the start of 2022 to $17.9 billion in Q3, Uber still dwarfs Lyft’s numbers.
OK, but what about comparing the number of trips for Uber versus Lyft? Can that tell us anything? Kinda sorta, but not really.
Both Uber and Lyft do disclose the number of trips that their respective companies provide. Figure 3, below, shows the comparison, yet again with Uber dwarfing Lyft.
Tumblr media
The drawback is that Uber and Lyft define this metric differently. Uber discloses “trips,” defined as the number of completed rides for its Mobility and Delivery segments. Lyft discloses “rides,” which is the number of completed rides — but since it has no Delivery segment, comparing trips to rides isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison.
What we don’t have from Uber is a breakdown of its Mobility trips versus Delivery trips. If we did have that number, then we could make a fair comparison and answer another burning question: How much revenue is each company making per trip?
Alas, Uber and Lyft don’t disclose sufficient numbers to let us draw any conclusions about that. They both do report revenue, obviously; but since they define “trips” and “rides” in non-comparable ways, we can’t really divide total number of trips/rides into revenue to derive a “revenue per ride” metric. Uber’s “trip” number would include food deliveries, while Lyft’s “ride” number wouldn’t.
Lyft does give a few tantalizing hints in its Management Discussion & Analysis, with non-GAAP disclosures such as “Active Riders” and “Revenue per Active Rider.” Except, Lyft defines an active rider as someone who uses the service at least once per quarter; Uber discloses a “Monthly Active Platform Consumer” (MPAC) which is someone who completes either a Mobility ride or a Delivery order at least once per month.
Maybe we could divide Lyft’s quarterly active users by three to get a rough estimate of monthly users, but we’d still be comparing Lyft’s rideshares against Uber’s rideshares and food deliveries. Is that a fair and useful way to calculate average number of riders, or average revenue per rider? We’re uncertain enough not even to try. Regardless, the point of this exercise was to show the range of non-GAAP disclosures that two comparable companies make, and the sorts of financial analysis you could at least begin to perform with those disclosures. Our Interactive Disclosure database has it all; with the right bit of sleuthing, you can go far.

Request: Stripper AU, but Shane’s the stripper and no one knows until Ryan ends up at the club where Shane works because it’s a new club.
I’ve seen this prompt floating around tumblr recently but I’ve never seen someone make Shane the stripper in this AU, so kudos to you anon for being creative and providing us with some god-tier stripper!Shane content. I mean, look at that boy’s legs!
sweet as wine
There he was, like disco superfly I smell sex and candy here Who's that lounging in my chair?

Look— none of this would have happened if Steven Lim wasn’t a scheming little weasel who doesn’t respect the sanctity of Chubby Have I Bunnied.
“Never have I ever lived in Arcadia, California,” Steven said through a mouthful of marshmallows.
It was foul— but fair play, and an obvious payback for Ryan’s earlier targeted question at Steven. Ryan laughed and begrudgingly fit another extra large marshmallow into his cheeks, nudging Shane.
“I feel like you have” he smiled, pointing a finger at him.
“Hm? Have I ever lived in Arcadia, California?”
“Oh, I thought you said slept,” Ryan snorted, a rogue marshmallow falling out of his mouth like a crewmate jumping ship.
Shane bit his lip, remembering that one time, years ago when he and Ryan had just started working at Buzzfeed as interns, Ryan inviting him to stay at his parents’ house in Arcadia. He remembered that night all too clearly— the night of their first and only kiss.  It was as though they reached some silent agreement to never mention it again, and Shane didn’t dare to, keeping their work relationship and his own feelings separate. But that was ages ago, and even if Shane’s feelings were still virulent in moments like these when Ryan looked soft and sure, leaning into his space, he had gone this long without mentioning it.
No need to ruin a good thing,  he thought bitterly, and begun to wonder if he would have to dig out that old journal sooner than expected.
Ryan had lost the game, forced to spit a congealed mess of mashed-up marshmallow into the staff sink, much to the mutual disgust of his co-hosts, and that’s when shit hit the fan.
“Ryan, since you’re the loser, I think you should face punishment of some sorts,” Steven said thoughtfully, grinning as he reclined back in his chair.
“Now, now, let’s be civil,” Shane tutted, Ryan rising to meet Steven’s eye beside him.
 “Like what?”
“Oh, I don’t know...” Steven hummed, twiddling his fingers. Shane could practically hear the gears turning in his head.
Steven and Ryan had always had this peculiar rivalry of sorts. It was usually victimless and in terms of workplace conflict, relatively mild, but sometimes it got carried away. Shane could think of about ten different instances off the top of his head where the two had gone head-to-head.
“What about...you have to go to a strip-club—“
“What?!” Ryan burst into laughter, head tilting towards the ceiling as he snorted into his hands, “Wha—  why?”
“—for two hours, with the boys,” Steven finished, “Come on, Ryan, it’ll be fun.”
Shane instantly paled, pulse hot and wild beneath his skin, Ryan’s laughter muffled below the ringing in his ears. He swallowed thickly, only shaken from his thoughts by Ryan’s hand, searing hot on his thigh.
“What do you say, Big Guy? You, me, Big Apple Steve, and T.J. out on the town this Friday?”
Shane looked at Ryan’s sunshine smile, those glittering brown eyes, completely unaware of the inner turmoil Steven’s simple gag had sent him into. Ryan’s touch seemed to brand his skin beneath his skinny jeans. He shivered, putting on what he hoped was a composed face.
“Sorry, boys,” he said breezily, “m’afraid I’ve got plans.”
“Booooo,” Steven called after him as he hobbled unsteadily to his feet, making a bee-line for the water cooler.
Ryan laughed, adding a few taunts of his own, but as Shane cooled his burning face against his aluminum water bottle, he noticed Ryan’s curious glance, as if trying to read Shane’s mind
____
Okay—Shane hadn’t lied. He really was busy on Friday night. What important plans he had, he couldn’t say, not even as Ryan continued to pester him for the rest of the week. He supposes that considering the nature of said aforementioned plans, it would have been wiser to cancel them altogether and just tag along. It would be easier right? He could see Ryan get drunk and danced upon by a few scantily-clad women and then Uber it back home after knocking back a few brewskis himself. But it wasn’t his fault— how was he supposed to know that the strip club Steven would drag Ryan to would be the same strip club Shane worked at?
Look, Shane wasn’t down on his luck by any means— he had recently started a promising new company with two of his closest friends and colleagues, and was still receiving a cushy contracting cheque from Buzzfeed for their Unsolved series. And despite his recent exit out of a long-term relationship, he liked to think he was doing pretty well, co-parenting a cat with a woman he still very much considered a good friend. But Los Angeles was an expensive place to live, and despite his nonchalant attitude in the Watcher Weekly, he couldn’t help but wonder, if it all went south, what would his backup plan be?
Besides, why did strippers always need some tragic background story to justify what they do? Couldn’t they just dance because they enjoyed it?
Shane certainly did, and it came as a real surprise. He never actually expected to take his brother’s friend up on the offer when Finn dragged him to a bar one weekend. They were four drinks in, intoxicated by the booze and fluorescent lights of the dim club, but that single passing comment ended up thrusting Shane into what would eventually become his side job and newfound passion.
“You could probably strip,” he joked, knocking back some fruity drink, “got the legs for it and everything.”
The guy was piss-drunk and drenched in body glitter— not exactly the kind of person you would take moral advice from, but nevertheless, Shane woke the next morning with a pounding head and an odd curiosity. It was a joke at first— like one of those bizarre hypotheticals your brain sometimes conjures up. But you never actually  act  on them. The only problem was that he did, and by the time he had secured his first gig, he could no longer deny that he was actually  interested  in a job like this. Okay, so what? He was a young, attractive man living in a particularly liberal part of L.A.
He shouldn’t have to prove himself, or feel ashamed about what he does. Hell, half the people he worked with were gay and heavily involved in the nightclub scene. And yet still, he found himself choosing not to mention this particular part of his life to his coworkers—  especially not Ryan.
It just never came up, and Shane never thought that it would— that was before Ryan showed up at his strip club.
 ____
The atmosphere hit Ryan like a freight train the second two intimidating bouncers begrudgingly lifted up two velvet ropes, letting him, Steven, and T.J. into the nightclub.
It was rather upscale, and nothing like the sleazy, smoke-filled joints Ryan remembered from his college days. The walls were black marble, lined with tasteful vintage band posters and neon hanging emblems. An authentic-looking jukebox sat nestled in the corner, and along the stage, a line of attractive dancers had started to form.
“I can’t believe they still I.D’ed me at the door,” Ryan shouted above the music, vibrating intensely through the floor and walls.
Steven grinned, “Well, you know what they say— Asian don’t raisin.”
“What—“ Ryan laughed, unaware if Steven could even hear him over the noise, “I’ve never heard that before.”
Steven smiled and nodded towards a nearby waitress, leaning in closer to Ryan’s ear, “Maybe you can try to get a free drink. You never know!”
T.J. rolled his eyes, “Meet me at the bar by twelve. And try not to do anything that’s going to get us arrested.”
With that he left, striking up a conversation with the bartender. T.J. was a married man with a newborn baby at home— a strip club was the last place he wanted to be, but he obliged to humour Ryan and to provide a ride home if needed.  Ryan, however was recently single. He and Mari had broke things off amicably about a month prior, giving her more freedom to explore her blooming career and Ryan more opportunities to film things for Watcher without feeling guilty about time spent away from home.  They were on good terms, but breakups were never easy, and Ryan was more than happy to get his mind off the situation and get himself back into the dating pool. He suspected Steven’s intentions were as such when he suggested this in the first place, and overcome with a sudden wave of affection for the man, slung an arm around his shoulder.
“C’mon, Big Apple Steve. Let’s go find us some dancers.”
 _____
The performances were impressive. Sultry but tasteful, dozens of dancers strutted the stage, winding around glimmering silver poles like black cats, smoky eyes glittering down at the crowd.  There were a few men in the mix too, clad in tight, cropped black clothes, rippling with muscle underneath. Ryan paid no mind to them, used to L.A.’s diverse, open culture, and after knocking back a few drinks, he even found himself eyeing them as much as the girl performers.  It was then that his heart stopped dead in his chest, pushing away the slow haze of liquor from his mind as his eyes zeroed in on one tall figure working the stage.
The man was unbelievably tall— towering above the rest of the performers, even the ones in six-inch heels. Through the rips in his black jeans, he could see his pale skin, broken up by delicate lace fishnets clinging to his slim long legs.  As the man peeled his shirt off, his collarbones jutted outwards, lean muscle trailing downwards from between his chest. His makeup was minimal— just smudged black eyeliner and a light dusting of glitter down his cheeks and pecs, hair mussed up as if he’d just had sex.  He swayed gracefully to the music, toying with the button of his jeans teasingly, stalking the pole like a predator before swinging around it once, smoothly. Ryan’s jaw dropped, and as he made eye contact with the stranger, the man visibly blanched.
“I...” Ryan choked out, pants alarmingly tight as a hot coil wound inside his stomach.
And then Shane was running off the stage, disappearing behind a blue velvet curtain as the music boomed on.
“Wow,” Steven said, equally as baffled.
“I...I’m gonna go to the bathroom,” Ryan said shakily, nearly tripping over his seat.
He stumbled towards the floor, and much to his own surprise, he found himself ignoring the neon green restroom sign, heading straight for the backstage instead.
 ____
He found Shane hunched over a vanity with smudged makeup and a lit cigarette like a tragic Hollywood star drowning in self pity and body glitter.
“I’m not offering any private dances right now,” he grumbled, voice muffled by his hand.
“I...” Ryan said, unsure of what the proper protocol was upon finding your friend naked and grinding on a stripper pole.
He was even less sure about how to gracefully navigate that conversation with a raging boner.
“Oh,” Shane said softly, taking in a sharp breath.
 “I—“
 “Look—“
They both spoke at the same time, laughing quietly like it was some kind of Mexican stalement and not the singlehanded most confusing moment of their entire friendship thus far.
“You first,” Shane said almost shyly, and it occurred to Ryan then that for the first time in their dynamic, Shane might be more scared than him.
“I had no idea,” he said lamely, and cast his gaze back at his sneakers.
 Nice going, Bergara. Real smooth.
Shane laughed dryly, “Yeah, that...that was kinda the whole point. Who woulda thought Steven would pick the only strip club I’m working at tonight, huh?”
Ryan smiled, scratching his neck, “Yeah. Uh— I just...” he looked at Shane, biting his lip, “Why didn’t you tell me? I know it’s none of my business what you do in your spare time but...we’re friends, Shane. You know you can share this stuff with me, right?”
Shane looked down at his lap, looking guilty, “I know, Ryan, I just...” he sighed, “I don’t know.”
“I mean,” Ryan shifted awkwardly from foot to foot. It was decidedly hard to have a serious conversation when your incredibly hot friend was half naked and sweaty in front of you. “Is it for money or—“
“No,” Shane said instantly. He shook his head, “I just...” he trailed off, looking at Ryan and offering a halfhearted shrug, “like it, I guess.”
Ryan nodded, furrowing his brows, trying to take all this information in through his beer-clouded mind.
 “Okay,” he said finally.
Shane looked at him, looking surprisingly vulnerable and almost small in his chair, “Okay.”
Ryan swallowed thickly, “You were really good out there.”
Shane snorted, scratching at his chin, fingers scraping against his beard with a soft sound that send another confusing jolt of heat towards Ryan’s groin.
 “Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Ryan said, surprised at how deep his voice sounded. He began to walk towards Shane, seemingly not by his own accord. “Really good.”
“You already said that,” Shane said smiling, looking amused.
“Really good,” Ryan repeated, voice husky and thick in his chest. Shane’s eyes were wide, and from their close distance, he could see as they dilated, eyes darkening further.
He licked his lips, feeling dizzy with the intensity of it all, high on the sight of Shane before him, “Still not doing any private dances tonight?”
“I...” Shane trailed off, looking at his lips, “I might be able to make an exception.”
 “Yeah?”
 “Yeah.”
Like moving through water, Shane slowly stood up, drawing up a chair, pushing on Ryan’s chest until he fell back into it, breaths laboured as they tore through his chest.  Shane circled the chair once, twice, dragging his fingertips teasingly against Ryan’s low collar before stopping in front of him, dropping gracefully  to the ground on the balls of his feet, smiling coyly at him, gripping his chin.  He got up again, slowly swinging his hips and trailing his hands along his thighs, dragging them up his hardened pecs before threading them through his hair, giving it a resolute tug. He poised one of his long legs on the arm of Ryan’s chair, the impressive bulge in his jeans in direct eyesight as he dragged Ryan’s gaze up to meet his own.
Shane slowly pivoted, fully into the dance now, a small smile on his face as he ground back against Ryan, grabbing his hands and placing them on his thighs, where fishnets poked out of the leg of his jeans. Ryan’s breath faltered in his lungs,  “Holy fuck,” he gasped, the air knocked out of him like he’d just taken a football to the chest. His fingers twitched along the exposed line of skin, feeling like a teenager creaming his pants after getting to first base.
  What the fuck.
And then Shane was pulling away, dragging him by the hand to a small couch in the middle of the room.
“Shane, wha—“ Ryan was cut off by a strangled moan as Shane pushed him back into the cushions, straddling his lap with practiced ease.
Shane smiled against his neck, starting to trail soft kisses along his jawline as he began to unbutton Ryan’s shirt.
“Fuck, Shane, I—“ he panted nonsensically, hands exploring whatever expanse of skin he could reach.
As Shane sucked a small bruise just under his ear, Ryan’s shirt popped open, nipples immediately hardening under the cool air as Shane began to grind softly down onto him, mouthing a hot line up his neck and clavicles.
“Please, please,” Ryan moaned, reaching out for him. In his clouded mind, he wasn’t even fully aware of what he was asking for until he found it in between Shane’s parted lips. He  sighed into the kiss, hands cupping Shane’s cheeks as his settled on Ryan’s shoulders, rutting dirtily against the front of his jeans. Ryan gasped into the kiss, a strangled moan torn out of his lips as Shane drew his fingers down to pad at his sensitive nipples.
“Fuck!” he groaned, thrusting his hips up to meet his movements.
“Someone’s sensitive,” Shane murmured in his ear, placing a teasing bite along his jaw.
“Shane, Shane,” he breathed, eyes rolling back into his head.
And then Shane took one pec into his mouth and Ryan Bergara was a dead man.
“Ohhh!” he borderline whined, clawing at Shane’s smooth back as he nipped at the bud, laving his tongue over it and mouthing hotly between his sternum.
He ground down once, twice, and eyes glittering, placing his mouth over his sensitive nipple, he reached down with his free hand and squeezed the bulge pressing against the zipper of Ryan’s jeans. With one plaintive moan and a stuttered,  Shane, Ryan bucked his hips up and stilled, wide-eyed and flushed pink under the soft lights, “I just came in my pants,” he said suddenly. “Oh my god.”
Shane cracked up, slumping against Ryan and burying his nose in his shoulder, “Oh my god, Ryan.”
“It’s not my fault you’re so hot!” he said defensively, clinging onto Shane as he blanketed his body warmly, pressing him into the couch. He pressed a small kiss to his exposed neck, and Shane smiled.
“I’m never letting you live this one down,” he wheezed, clapping him once on the ass, “I guess the viewers were right about your nipple thing.”
“S-Shut up, Shane,” he muttered, pinching him in the arm.
Shane huffed out a laugh against his neck and as the air stilled, he shut his eyes, “So...should we talk about this?”
Ryan shifted underneath him, “Nah,” he said groggily, leaning into his touch, “let’s do that when I haven’t had five brewskis.”
“Five?” Shane laughed, “Your frat boy habits die hard, Ryan. You’re gonna be a real menace tomorrow.”
“Well,” Ryan said slowly, tracing a line down his back, “maybe you should come home with me and make sure my morning is tolerable.”
 “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” Ryan said, feeling emboldened with each inch he grew closer to Shane, high off the post-orgasm bliss and the smell of Shane’s cologne warm and sweet against his skin.
Shane grabbed his ass, “I fuckin’ love Steven Lim.”
As Ryan dissolved into laughter, he couldn’t help but share the sentiment. And that night when he and Shane walked out of the bar hand-in-hand, he couldn’t help but wonder if this was Steven’s plan all along.

Multi Level Murdering || Nicodemus & Jeff
Et tu, Karen?
Content Warning: Murder
@bountybossier
It was advised that Nicodemus stay in the house. He promptly ignored that advice and said fuck it, he was going to do it live. It was better to distract himself with some finding some fucking Facebook mommy blogger than sitting and listening to the ocean lap at the walls. Even with hunter physiology, his nose still hurt like a son of a bitch, two accompanying black eyes the perfect accessory. The night did well enough to cover it as he approached Dell’s. The guy outside looked enough like a Jeff that he offered a short wave. “Howdy. Jeff, right? You got an address for Karen or somethin’?”
Jeff was leaning against his car, waiting for the bounty hunter to show up. He was really concerned about this stupid middle aged woman now. Karen. Hadn’t posted anything on her stupid mommy blogger facebook page. Hadn’t seen hide nor hair of her dumbass ex-husband either. When Nic finally rolled up, though, Jeff wondered if he shouldn’t just contact the police. “What the fuck happened to your face?” He asked, bluntly. “You alright? Must have been some fuckin’ fight,” Jeff pushed off his car. “Yeah, I got an address. Should help. I think it’s her sister’s place though.”
Immediately and to the detriment on his face, Nicodemus frowned. “Some fuckin’ asshole suckerpunched me on the beach yesterday. I was tryin’ to take a nap or some shit.” Was it yesterday? What fucking does what it right then? The doctor and Erin had been there. When was that? Oh well. It didn’t matter. He straightened up and pocketed his rough hands. “Anyhow, that’s a better address than no address.” His eyes narrowed down the street, into the pitch darkness. Fuck, he should probably say something. “Drivin’ or walkin’ distance?”
“What the fuck? I hope you fucking punched him out.” Jeff scoffed. God, and people said that Boston was rude? White Crest, Maine had no competition. He shook his head. “It’s by the beach, some nice ass waterfront house. But even if it weren’t I’d say we should drive anyway, this darkness shit is fucking weird, man. And dangerous.” Jeff would swear he kept seeing shit the night. But he pushed off his car, unlocking it. “Get in, I’ll drive us. Do we have a plan for when we get there? I don’t really know how this is supposed to fuckin’ work.”
“Nah, he fuckin’ ran before I could,” Nicodemus muttered, eyes downcast as he lamented the potential of a sandy brawl. The promise of a beachfront house made him both wary and excited. Why, he wasn’t sure. Maybe it was that urge to be near the water again. A weird urge to just sit and stare. He shook his head loose of that anchoring and grunted. “Yeah, fair point. Shit’s been fucky out here.” He rounded to the passenger and sat, reminding himself that seatbelts existed. “Knock on the door, ask a couple questions. We’re just concerned citizens anyway and hell, you know her. That’s gotta stand for somethin’. Ain’t gonna do nothin’ crazy.”
“Fucking dickbag,” Jeff said, disgusted as he turned the car on and pulled out of his parking space. “Somethings fucking weird with this town, man.” And that was saying something becasue Jeff was pretty sure that he was one of the fucking weird things in this town. But ever since he got here it was raining fish, cursed ass coins, mimes running rampant, and now an endless night had fallen over White Crest. “I am a concerned citizen. I mean, she used to come every fuckin’ friday. Shit ain’t normal,” Jeff shook his head and pulled off onto the road that would lead downwards to the beach houses. “Fuck me, I can’t see shit. She said something about blue shutters - look for 609. On the mailboxes or somethin’.”
“Fucking dickbag is right,” Nicodemus agreed. As Jeff talked, the hunter looked at him. Between his head and his broken ass senses, everything felt off. He felt off. Like he was watching himself from a different window. But he tapped a finger against his thigh and brought himself back, wound the cord of sensibility around his fist and tugged himself down as Jeff drove. “Nah, yeah, I gotcha. Nothin’ here is fuckin’ right.” Once they stopped, he stepped out of the car and reached for a heavy flashlight inside his jacket. Clicking it on, he swept it over the house numbers. 615. 613. 611. 609. There it was. Nic called over to Jeff and waved him over. “Got it.” The house was quiet. The hunter tilted his head. All he could hear was the ocean behind it. That compelled him to move up the front steps. “I’m gonna just...fuckin’ knock, alright?” He did as he said and the door opened as he did. He shot Jeff a confused look before he shined the light into the open house. A smear of something dark led away from the door and towards the back. The blood smelled like...blood. The smell of saltwater was too strong to determine anything else. “Yeah...think you were right to be worried there.”
Jeff pulled up into Karen’s driveway, and hopped out, closing the door to his car as he followed Nic up the walkway, his hands shoved in his jacket pockets to protect from the cold. His eyes narrowed as he looked back at Nic with a shrug. “What the fuck -” Jeff said, aloud, pulling his phone out of his back pocket and switching on the flash light. Jeff automatically slipped past Nic, pushing through the entry way to look around. He wished being a fucking fairy meant he had something useful - like night vision, or laser eyes, or wings taht actually fucking worked. “Hey! Karen,” he barked, shining light around. There was a dark puddle of something on the ground near the overturned couch. “Nic?” He called over his shoulder. “I think we might have to callthe fucking - what the hell!” Before he could finish his sentence, something small and round bounced towards him. Smoke surrounded him and he swatted at it, wildly feeling the the wall for - ah! A switch! “Nic, what the hell -” Jeff went to look at Nic, before he realized that he was standing there, like an idiot, with blue and black fucking butterfly wings on his back. What? He hadn’t lifted the glamor. “Uh - look, I can fucking explain -” Except he didn’t get a chance too, becasue some small woman lunged at him. Karen?! Jeff dodged out of the way, the iron knife grazing his forearm. “Ow! Karen! What the hell! No! Stop!” Except Karen lunged again, an angry yell coming from her. Warden. Had this all been a trap. Jeff wasn’t sticking around to find out, and immediately turned on his heel and started running out the back doors to the beach by the water. Maybe he could lose her in the darkness. “WHAT THE FUCK KAREN?!”
Nicodemus knelt down and poked at the blood as Jeff’s flashlight kicked on. He kept his flashlight on hand as he looked and traced the blood toward the kitchen. When the other man spoke to him, he picked his head up and squinted. As soon as the smoke hit, he knew what this was. Dispellate. They were in the house of a warden. The sight of blue wings filled his dark vision as he shone his light on Jeff. “Yeah, you’re fae, I don’t give a sh--” Footsteps. Light. Wardens were always lighter on their feet than slayers and hunters. Their prey was harder to catch. The woman lunged at Jeff and Nic followed the iron knife as it cut through the air, damn near cut through Jeff. Nicodemus was up on hit feet and moving, following Jeff as Karen tore off after him. “Karen, what the fuck? I get you’re a goddamn warden but he makes your fuckin’ margaritas! The fuck is wrong with you?” He stepped out and stared into the sea, a dark expanse in the distance. It looked peaceful. It looked like a grave. Blood and iron. Salt and sea. The hunter blinked and slowed his pace to a methodical step, shoulders dropped and jaw tight. The very way he got when a bounty was getting near. In the dark, Nic saw her clearly. Saw the blood on Jeff’s arm clearer. The sea pulled in closer. By a misstep, Karen was closer to the water and the hunter crashed into her like a freight train. “Gn'th teeth ymg' ephailllln'gha bloody, Karen.” He grabbed Karen by the hair and pulled her into the water, snapped her away harshly from Jeff and his bright wings.
“What! The! Ever! Living! Fucking! Fuck! Is! Fucking! Going! On!” Jeff bellowed. He was pretty fucking fast, thankfully, but Karen seemed to be a lot faster than he originally thought when he was stuffing her in ubers after too many margaritias. “No, no, not the wings! Literally anything but the fucking wings!” Oh, she’d start with those first, and rip them off, he heard her yell. Honestly, Jeff had never really felt this sort of betrayal. What the fuck? The semi-frozen sand had slowed him a little, but he was lucky Nic was there because he pulled Karen away the second before she managed to actually stab him. God his fucking arm hurt. That knife had to be made of iron. The cut was inflamed and a little swollen  and he was sure it was going to fucking need stitches He would be eating his words to that doctor on the internet now. Cussing, he looked over as Nic dragged her into the water. “Nic?” He said. He wasn’t stopping. “Hey! Nic! Nic! What the fuck are you doing?!”
Jeff’s loud and vulgar confusion didn’t compel Nicodemus away from Karen. He could feel her hair tug and she swung the knife around on him. The blade went only an inch into his shoulder before he headbutted her back, his already fucked nose splitting open again. He ignored it. She was quicker but he hit harder. “She tried to kill you, Jeff. She’s a goddamn warden. She doesn’t give a shit about your martinis,” he said, eerily calm. Entirely unaware that he didn’t quite seem like just a bounty hunter. “H' epgoka l' fuckin' gn'thor.” He wasn’t even sure he had said anything to Jeff. Maybe he had just thought it. The only motion he felt was the moon-pulled beat of water against his flexed arms and Karen’s thrashing. The blood on his face and the blood falling into the water didn’t phase him. Karen’s thrashing slowed as he pushed her head further into the sand, tightened his fist around her throat until his fingers almost touched. She slowed. Stopped. Nicodemus blinked. Looked from the sea to Jeff. “Jeff, what the fuck?” He stumbled out of the water and spat out seawater. “That was Karen, right? Baby blogger, gross fuckin’ margarita Karen? Karen Dickwell?” She wasn’t moving. “Ah, shit.”
Jeff stayed on the shore, panting heavily as he watched the scene before him unfold, frozen in place. His wings twitched in a sudden anxiety and anticipation. PArt of him, as Karen’s head was shoved under the water, thought she fucking deserved it. She tried to fucking kill him! After he gave a shit about her. What the fuck - and she would kill others like him and Deirdre as well. Like his father. He didn’t feel badly about that. But as Nic’s eerily calm voice crept back to him, as Nic asked him what the fuck was going on, he stumbled forward, boots getting wet in the sand to look at the body. “What the fuck was that?” Jeff asked, confused and slightly disgusted. In a moment, his wings disappeared as he replaced the glamour over them. Didn’t do his silver fucking tongue though. “Yeah that was fucking Karen fucking Dickwell - you just - you just killed her.” That couldn’t be allowed, that was murder. Oh shit, he had jus witnessed a murder. Well, a murder that saved his life. Jeff ran a hand through his hair, looking up at him. “What the fuck do we do now?”
It was like parts of Nicodemus started to shut down. Any tender bit of him, no matter how small, pulled away until all that was left was the efficient, rationalizing pieces. That was normal. He did that all the time in order to function day by day. But looking at Karen's body wading in the sea and Jeff's voice in his head, it didn't feel normal. He chalked up sleepwalking and delirium to just that. On his feet, he stepped back and cleared his sore throat. Looked at Jeff again. That poor fucking guy. Damn near got his fucking wings shredded, a regular tried to kill him after how many months of service, and then he had just saw likely his first fucking murder with said regular. "She wouldn't have stopped. Others like her," he rumbled out. As if that was a great answer to what the fuck had just happened. Fuck, had he just killed someone? The part of him that started to panic, he shut it down and locked it tight. Not the time. "Must've...Must've had you pegged for weeks. Planned it. Fuck, Jeff." It was easier to talk with his back to the ocean, so he turned. "How they work an' all." He looked at Jeff's cut arm and scowled.  "You good?" Shit. Jeff was a decent guy. Fae. Fuck. He immediately felt sorry. What the fuck was happening? He looked at the body. How it seemed to sink further. "Maybe we didn't find her. It was too dark and we didn't risk it. She had an accident 'cuz it's so fuckin' dark. I don't fuckin' know."
Jeff nodded. “I know of wardens,” he said. “Killed my fuckin’ father.” His shitty ass, good for nothing father. He wasn’t exactly sure what the hell he was supposed to be fucking feeling right now. Right now he sort of felt the numbing shock of it, watching Karen die like that, and some fucking part of him felt bad. Why should he feel bad? The world was fucking terrible anyway, and she had tried to fucking kill him. The stinging in his arm grit his teeth. “I wouldn’t be fucking surprised,” Jeff said bitterly. He glanced at Nic, looking him up and down. “You know about this shit. That I’m a fucking fairy and what she fucking was?” He digested that information for a moment, before nodding. “I’m going to have to give myself stitches, that fucking knife was made of iron,” he said, looking at his arm, poking at it. He reached out and clapped Nic on the shoulder. “You really had my fucking back, Nic. Thanks for that. You drink for free any time I’m working. I promise,” Jeff said.

My Favorite Comics Things 2018 Part 1: The Creators
The following is selections of my ballot for @multiversitycomics end of the year awards. The ballot is done in a Ranked Choice manner, with placement in relation to the amount of points that vote gets. So 10 is best 1 is least best. I’ll write notes where I can.
The WRITERS
10 - James Tynion IV
Tynion IV  finished up his excellent 47 issue run (and some change) on Detective Comics. This run of ‘Tec was my favorite thing in the Rebirth era, it was so consistent and he ended things on an emotionally powerful note (that is perhaps undone by the nature of BigTwo Comics.) He also started writing Justice League Dark and spot issues of Justice League. An overall good year, which is to say nothing of his continuing adventures of the Backstager with specials and other work at Boom.
9 - Marguerite Bennett
Bennett finished up an 18 issue run of Batwoman, that I vainly hope will get a deluxe collection one day. Bombshells: United also ended in one of the best examples of this is how you do finales
8 - Sarah Vaughn
I was a bit of a late convert to Sleepless, which is surprising since Vaughn did the underrated Alex+Ada with  Jonathan Luna and Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love. Sleepless is a sleeper hit of Image, I hope, it’s not like anything they really publish with its emphasis on fantasy romance that rightly eschews explaining the fantasy except for fantasy that is love.
7 - Kieron Gillen
The Wicked + The Divine continued on. He recently launched Die with Stephanie Hans. Finished up work on Star Wars. Uber is still around and he has that new book from Dynamite.
6 - Jeff Lemire
If all he did was Black Hammer, the main book, he’d make the list. But Lemire also wrote several Hammer miniseries as Dark Horse finds a new Mignolaver-esque line to publish (and adapt). He also finished a multi year run on Bloodshot with several experimental issues and kinda killed all my interest in the property for the time being. Which is the sign of a great run.
5 - Bryan Edward Hill
Despite being around and within comics and comics related things for years, 2018 was a bit of a breakout year for Bryan Edward HIll. He finished up work on what appears to be the first “season” of Postal. Wrote a solid fill in arc for Detective Comics, that spins into his forthcoming Batman and the Outsiders relaunch. And was a part of the Vertigo relaunch with American Carnage. He is a good writer and an all around interesting dude, who is a great interview, which is why his proclamation that 2019 might be is last year in comics so freighting.
4 - Jody Houser
2018 was a good year for Jody Houser. By her count she contributed to 48 issues overall (41 as solo writer). She finished off a run on Mother Panic, started a new Faith mini at Valiant. Continued to write Star Wars stuff and other nerd properties like Doctor Who (13th Doctor) and Stranger Things.
3 - Ta-Nehisi Coates
Black Panther was a big deal with year and Coates run on the series has helped prime things. I’ve largely dropped Marvel but whatever Coates does I’ll give it a look. This includes his run on Captain America.
2 - Cecil Castellucci
Shade, The Changing Woman, that is all.
1 -  Magdalene Visaggio
A productive year for Mags Visaggio, new Kim & Kim and one of the real surprises of Young Animal: Eternity Girl.
Artists in General
10 – Alvaro Martinez & Raul Fernandez - Detective Comics and Justice League Dark
9 – Fernando Blanco - Batwoman
8 – Sonny Lieu - Eternity Girl and Milk Wars backups
7 – Karl Kerschl & MSASSYK -Isola
6 – Ed Piskor - X-Men: Grand Design
5 – Sean Phillips - My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies
4  - Ngozi Ukazu - Check, Please!
3 – Dexter Soy - Red Hood and the Outlaws
2 – Linda Sejic - Swing, Punderworld
1 – Stjepan Sejic - Aquaman, Justice League Odyssey,Sunstone: Mercy
Publishers
1. First Second Books
They published my favorite OGN of the year,The Prince and the Dressmaker, and have some of the best YA OGN publishing in the book trade.
2. Drawn & Quarterly
The Berlin trilogy is finally complete and they published a lil book called Sabrina, which got nominated for that there Man Booker Prize
3. Image Comics
Basically the go to place for mainstream independent work.
4. DC Comics
They may be doing some stuff that has made people on the internet angry, but they did a lot of good. Spinning up Zoom and Ink for next year, Bendis and Jinxworld, overall quality of the line. I maybe less enchanted with them in 2018 but they still did a lot of good.
5. Top Cow Productions
Yes, an imprint within a publisher but their overall offering has me consistent interested and willing to give them a shot.

Nick and Rons Growing Love (S71)
The first thing that Ron felt when he woke up in the morning was his boyfriend nick spooning him. It was a Saturday morning, a rare day which they both had the day off. A whole day for the two of them to be together. Ron turned around and gazed at his dosing boyfriend. Nick was tall and fit with piercing green eyes. Ron gently caressed his boyfriends stubbly face and gave him a peck. “Morning babe.” Nicks eyes stayed closed, but a smile lit up his face. Ron lowered his hand to trace his jawline, then Nicks firm pecs, down his smooth abs, through his coarse bush, before finally ending at his stiff cock. Ron couldn’t help but smile. Looks like you’re already ready for the day,” he said. Nick dozed on but he said, “Haha go ahead. Take a load off.” Ron gently lifted the sheets. He fondled Nick’s throbbing morning wood as his boyfriend slumbered on. Ron decided to start his boyfriends day off the best was possible, and slowly pulled his manhood into his mouth. Something was off though. The musk that usually surrounded Nicks bush was gone, it smelled strangely sweet. Not only that but the salty taste of his cock was replaced by a mild flavor that Ron couldn’t quite place. However Ron felt that he strangely didn’t care. He kept on sucking and sucking. He could feel Nick tensing beneath his touch as he neared the climax Nicks starting moaning with intense vigor. On the final thrust Ron felt Nick shoot his thick load deep into his throat. He swallowed every last drop out of habit, but that sweet taste didn’t go away. It tasted faintly of blue berries. Nick lifted the rest of the sheets with a grin plastered on his face. “Damn boy, you still got it.” Ron snuggled up to Nick as he felt his arms embrace him. “Haha I take it you had fun at that new club last night,” said Ron. “What was its name again?” “Studio 71. It was weird, but kinda fun. They had this special with new guys,“ said Nick. Ron raised an eyebrow in a way that could only mean mischief. “Oh really? What kind of special?” “New guys get the chance to try a new drink and name it. However I’m pretty sure mine was water so I didn’t bother. Got a free cocktail out of it though.” “Hmmm that sounds fun,” said Ron. “Yeah the weird thing is though that the MC gave me a card. Told me to call the number if anything happened. I have no idea what he meant by it though.” Nick shrugged it off and left the bed with Ron in tow, and began to get ready for the day. Ron went into the bathroom to flush out what was left of Nick’s seed. He gargled some water and spit it out into the basin. Something happened then that made Ron pause. The water he drank and spat out was mysteriously blue. Curious he stuck out his tongue. It also had a slight shade of blue, as if he just sucked on some blue candy. Looking closely he noticed a small blue dot on his nose, barely larger than a freckle. As he watched his tongue slowly darkened, and the blue speck on his face subtly grew. “Babe!” He called, “Do you still have that card you got at the bar last night?” From the other room Nick reasoned, “Yeah it’s right here! Why?” Ron returned to the bedroom and pointed out the blue speck on his face that grew to the size of a mole. “I think we may have found some of those side effects they mentioned.”
Nick looked closely at his nose and his eyes widened. All the color drained away from his face. “Oh fuck...” he said under his breath. He dropped down to the floor to find his jeans he wore last night and to find the card. He pulled it out of the pocket and started fumbling with his phone and called the number. Ron could feel panic rising in him, and he knew something bad was happening to him. Nick held the phone up to ear and waited for someone to pick up. “Hello is this Studio 71? Yeah something is happening to my boyfriend! There’s a blue spot on his nose and it’s growing! Is he...is he gonna...you know?” As Ron heard a muffled voice on the other end Nick glanced over his boyfriend with horror plastered all over his face. The garbled voice spoke again “YOU WILL?! Oh thank you! We’ll be right over. Is there a discreet entrance or something we could use? No? Ok I hope it won’t come to that but thanks. Ok we’ll leave now. Bye” Nick spoke with a voice thick with an artificial calm. “We’re heading to the Studio and they can take care of this. It’s a 30 minute drive, so they told me to tell you to wear cloths with a lot of stretch ok? They’ll fix this.” Ron was terrified. Suppressing his fear he look at his reflection in the bathroom mirror again. The blue spot now had spread to cover the tip of his nose. “Ok. I have an old tracksuit I had before I lost the weight. I’ll throw on some flip flops too.” Ron could help it; he had to address the elephant in the room. “Nick, what is happening to me?” Nick stoped throwing on whatever cloths he could find and said. “It’s impossible to explain, but I hope we can get there before the worst part happens.” Five minutes later the two of them were sitting in Nicks car driving downtown. His phone said that it would take about half an hour to get to the Studio, but it did warn that there was a change for construction delays. Nick flew down the road as fast he could with Ron in the passenger seat. He sat in an old grey tracksuit. It was at least two sizes to big but that was the least of his worries. His eyes were fixed on the mirror on the flap in front of him. His nose was now completely blue, and the color was starting to spread. It had reached his forehead, his upper lip, and was starting to discolor his cheeks. As he watched his eyes turned from brown to blue. Ron turned to Nick. He was gripping the wheel so tight that his knuckles were bone white. He was keeping his eyes fixed on the road, and Ron could tell he was avoiding looking at him. For Ron that cut like a knife, to see someone he loved so much seemingly repulsed by him. A stoplight delayed their progress leaving them in an icy silence. Nick broke the silence, his voice heavy with emotion. “Babe, I’m sorry. This is all my fault.” His voice was cracking under the guilt. When Ron replied he swallowed his fear and reassured the man he adored. “I love you, but please tell me what happened last night. Tell me what is happening to me. I don’t care what you did, I know you wouldn’t intentionally do this to me. Please just tell me the truth. The light turned green and Nick eased up on the gas. The silence was defending. Ron’s face turned completely blue and his hair and beard followed, but he didn’t care. He fixed his eyes on Nick. Nicks eyes darted everywhere in panic. Every now and then an odd syllable would emerge from his mouth as he tried to start a sentence, but words would fail him. Ron turned away and looked down At the floor. It was then he noticed his wrists had turned blue. He lifted his jacket, and saw that his flat stomach was also the same shade. It seemed that the only part of him that was still pale was his hands. They turned a corner ten minutes away from the Studio. Lo and behold the street was being dug up, with only one lane open for traffic. It was bumper to bumper, and the GPS added 5 minutes to the arrival time. Nick slammed his hand on the wheel. “FUCK! Shit man I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have taken that stupid dare! Fucking Jon!”
Ron was puzzled. “Jon from work? What does he have to do with this?” “He dared me to take that shot at the Studio,” Nick explained. “We were celebrating his birthday and they took me with them. Had to sign a waiver and a NDA just to get in. It was insane in there and I had to get drunk just to process everything. Then the Emcee asked if there was any first timers who would want to try a new drink. Jon dared me to walk up and take it. Damn thing tasted like water so I thought it was all a joke. Then they gave me the card, I had a few more drink then took an Uber home and I thought that was the end of it. Until now that is.” Ron was processing everything that he just learned. Staring at his blue palms and pale finger, he realized it didn’t answer his biggest question. “Babe, what will happen to me. Please just tell me, I know it wasn’t your fault.” Nick sighed and mumbled something under his breathe as the blue color finally covered Rons fingers. “What did you say?” Nick turned his boyfriend with nothing but regret in his eyes. “I said that you’re gonna swell up with juice.” As if on cue, a loud gurgle came from Rons stomach. He felt pressure behind his navel, and a lump the size of a pea, but it was growing. Slowly but surely he was growing. Rons panic returned with the force of a freight train. “What the FUCK do you mean swell up?! How big and I’m gonna fucking get?!” “I don’t know! I saw some guys last night grow to balls that were up to ten feet across. That’s why we need to hurry!” Ron felt his heart drop to his stomach. “Ten...feet...of FAT?!” “No it’s not that simple,” said Nick. “It’s juice in you man.” Ron felt the lump in his stomach that was now the size of an apple. It was starting to hide his abs. Out of curiosity he pressed into it. “Oh God,” he whispered. It felt like an overfilled water balloon. He was really filling with juice. It all clicked. The Blueberry musk and cum on Nick, the blue color, and now the juice. He was going to swell up into a blueberry in a car stuck in traffic. “What can they do at the Studio to fix this?” He asked with fear in ever word. “I don’t know,” said Nick. “I’ve seen some guys rolled away and come back a couple hours laters back at their normal size. It’s reversible. We just have to get there first.” Ron felt some relieve, but his fear returned when he noticed the GPS added another 5 minutes to there arrival time. He look down at his new belly. His abs were completely gone; they sank below a sea of sweet juice. Out of curiosity Ron ran his hand across have his new gut. “Oh fuck.” He said under his breath. A wave of juice rippled across his belly. He could see his belly undulate beneath the track suit. The weirdest part about it though was that it felt...good? Ron lifted his top and looked down as his belly. A blue berry belly and some sloshes and gurgles greeted him. He ran his fingers across his belly again. “Mmmmm” Ron has to stifle a moan. Something purely orgasmic took over his body. It was like his whole belly became an erogenous organ. He continued to rub his belly as it grew, moaning to himself the whole time. The pressure spread behind him, and he could feel himself being lifted up off of the seat. He was growing bigger and bigger, and all his attention was on his juice. He didn’t notice Nick’s concerned looks. He didn’t care when they got out of traffic. He could hear Nick asking if he was ok. He was having too much fun playing with his new body, his right body, the body he new he was destined for. Nick parked the car in front of Studio 71 with the passenger side facing the curb. He walked around the car to let his boyfriend out and a blue whale greeted him. Ron looked surprised at the open door. “Oh are we here?” he asked with a hand still on his belly. His tracksuit was being pushed to the limits. The top slid up to his soft pecs exposing his round shape. The bottoms were still around his waist, but they were holding on for dear life. Nick grabbed Rons juice filled arm to lift him out of the car.
“Come on man we’re almost there.” Nick tugged hard on his bloated boyfriend. He was pulled free from the car. He was so heavy that the car rocked on it wheels. He pulled Ron along who was moaning and sloshing the whole way into the bar. All that weight on his frame was making it harder and harder to walk. Ron could barley lift his his feet as he waddled along through the bar. On one step he lost his footing as juice was starting to grow between his legs. He tripped and landed on his bulging belly. “OH GOD! OH SHIT! FUCK!” A tsunami of juice racked his body from his toes to his head as he rocked on his stomach. It was the best orgasm he felt in his life, yet he felt as if I he could again immediately. He wanted to. He was a sexy berry. He wanted to grow bigger. He was Nick’s toy. He was a toy for everyone and anyone. He growth finally slowed down and stopped when he was eight feet across. For the first time in about an hour he could think clearly. Nick was staring at him on the brink of tears. “Fuck man, I’m so sorry. I never wanted this for you. I’m sorry about everything.” Ron looked at him confused. “What are you talking about?” “You were moaning in pain since we got stuck in traffic. It must feel terrible to be swollen that big.” Ron couldn’t help but laugh. “Hahaha babe this feels amazing! I’ve never had more fun! Roll me onto me gut and you’ll find some proof!!” Nick hesitated, but he pressed his hands on Ron’s side and pushed. He could feel the juice flow beneath Ron’s skin and hear Ron moan in total bliss. Nick finally finished rolling Ron and looked for the proof that He was talking about. Nick looked between the stubs of Ron’s legs and felt himself harden at what he saw. Ron’s cock grew massive and thick. It was at least a foot long and three inches around, and his nuts swelled up to the size of softballs. Sweet, sticky, and aromatic juice was dripping his head, begging to be tasted. Nick was drawn to it and put his lips on the head and began to suck. Ron quivered and moaned beneath his touch and berry juice filled his mouth. Nick could suck on this for hours, but he was interrupted by a member of Management. “Looks like you won’t be needing to use the juicing facilities anymore.” Said the man in the crisp blue suit. “Naw I think we’re good for now. We’re both off today so there’s no rush. Right babe?” Ron moaned a response. “Right,” said the man. “We knew that sample you had gave you one shot of blueberry cum, but we expected you to use it at the Studio last night. Your lucky you got here when you did. We don’t often let berries out of the club. In any case you get to name the drink that you had last night. Any ideas before we start selling it?” Nick looked back on past crazy hour and how this all started by his boyfriend waking him up with a blowjob. The perfect came to him and a sly grin blossomed on his face. “Call it Morning Glory.” The man in the blue suit could help but laugh. “Very well! Morning Glory it is! Now you too have fun. Let Vinnie at the bar know if you need anything.” With that Nick and Ron continued to spend the rest of their day off at The Studio. Morning Glory is still on the menu and one of the two men drinks it the night before the two of them spend the day in the club. Nick and Ron are now closer than ever thanks to there adventure, and it’s all thanks to a mystery drink Nick had at Studio 71. 💙🔵💙

Mom was coming on Tuesday (and before I continue, I just need to say that she was actually massively helpful, and not judgmental about shit, and honestly, best help I've gotten from here in a LOOOONG ass time) and I wanted to look like I was totally ready. Because some of my college moves were a complete shit show, and mom witnessed all of those. I crashed around 2.30-3 ish, planning to sleep till 9.45. Nope. the doughnuts my relator sent over (which are stans doughnuts and delicious) arrived at 9.15 instead of 11. So I broke speed records for getting dressed in something and running out to get those. Mom made it about 11.30 and we were working on the last min shit (getting all the trash out, and loading everything in my fridge/freezer into coolers because who needs to buy all new condiments). We had finished packing all the shit by a bit after 1, and had moved onto sweeping where we could (around the boxes lol) and double checking cabinets. My movers said it would only take an hour to move all of my packed shit into their truck, drive it to the new place, and get it up in the elevator. They said they would be there between 1 and 2. so. I had elevator reservations at this building for 1-5. Any time I go over, I have to pay a fee. $50 a half hour. I told the movers this in the initial email. They never gave me a phone number, everything had been over email. At 1.30 I started to get nervous. at 2 I started to call every number I could find attached to them online. Finally I got a call back at 2.15. Their previous job had run over, and I was next. They would get to my place by 3.30. Welp. nothing I can do. I reiterated the time for the elevator. And for those unfamiliar with Chicago traffic, let me tell you, rush hour starts at about 4, and lasts until 8 ish. The drive between the two places is about 15 min in a speeding uber with no traffic, or 45 min stuck in all the traffic. Or something between. They brought an extra guy they didn’t charge me for, and got all my shit out in like 20 min. Which is just fucking impressive, because I had a daybed, mattress, 3 shelves with cubes in them, a desk, chair, tv, 4 rugs, 9 under bed bins, and about 40 moving boxes, and lived in a second story walk up.
So then mom and I ran over to the new place. Plan was, I run in, get the movers, do whatever I needed to do with security, got moms parking pass for later, while mom went back to the apartment to get the things we didn’t want the movers to move (there were like 4 smallish boxes, 2 backpacks, and the contents of the freezer that needed to be tossed into grocery bags. the boxes and backpacks were fragile and irreplaceable things, and the backpacks were legal docs, a few decent and sentimental pieces of jewelry, and my laptop), then, once mom was headed over, i’d head down, meet her in the circle drive out front, and we’d figure out parking.
lol
So, I run in, run back to the loading bay, and can’t find a security guard. Then the movers call and they can’t figure out how to get to the back of the building. So I go out back to try to give them directions. They finally show up (traffic was awful), and one guy goes, ‘show me where to go’. So he follows me. Still no guard by the loading bay, so I head to management office. A security guard is going in, so I go to follow him and he yells at me. OOOK. I decide to go to the front desk next. They tell me to go to management and point out I only have about 45 min (I FUCKING KNOW). I say I can’t get into the management office right now, this is time sensitive, where is the security guard by the back door. She radios someone and says they’re coming around the corner. Guard who yelled at me earlier comes around the corner. I ask him. He says hes looking for someone and not to bother him. oooook. I go back to the front desk. she now says they don’t have the move in info up there, can’t prove that i am who i say i am, and that I need to move. and to head back to management. Management is a 4 min leisurely stroll from the desk btw. So i’m heading back, when a different security guard rounds the corner, and asks if im the mover. well she asks the mover if we’re moving in, and i’m like ‘nope, i am, he’s carrying the shit, i’m paying’. and she starts in on complaining about how we’ve kept her waiting all day and she wants to go home. I apologize (but like also, I paid her to be there. not to sound entitled, but she was paid to do nothing but sit in an air conditioned office waiting for me to show up, and then to watch movers walk by. I’m sorry, but good grief, i also did not want to be running late). So then we try to take the elevators. the door to the freight elevator is locked for no fucking reason. my fob won’t work. she doesn't have a key. So i run back to the front desk, and she radios for mr friendly security guard to come back. He takes his sweeet ass time walking there, and we spend 5 min staring at the glass doors separating me from the service elevators. my mover is like ‘ i hope we’re refunded for this 15 min’ and i’m like ‘bitch i wish you’d showed up on time’ internally but just nod. SO then she’s like ‘you know you just have 15 min left. ‘ and i’m like ‘yes i am aware’. and she’s like ‘i have to tell management if you run over’ and i’m like ‘yes i know this too’. so it’s unlocked, I escort the movers to my room, unlock the door, and then fucking sprint back to management office (which I still haven’t made it into today) so I can pick up my parking pass for mom, before management office closes at 5. so the movers get my shit up in like 45 min, and then move it to the correct rooms. I pay them and tip them cause apparently you’re supposed to. and then I lay down and try to stop sweating for 5 seconds.
Then mom calls. She’s on her way, and got everything but one box in her car. So I head down to the lobby (meet a neighbor I share a wall with, he seems super nice, teaches piano, was giving a lesson while i was moving in, I couldn’t hear anything. i love these thick walls) and hop in moms car, and we go to figure out the garage. We finally figure out how to get in (this took a few min, the garage system is currently complicated as they’re in the middle of renovating) get down and discover that yes we have in and out privileges with this pass, but it’s still valet. all parking I can get for guests is valet. which is awkward but ok. We meet William, who is SUPER friendly, nicely explains how the garage works, lets us leave the car by the valet stand while we unload some things, lets me use the luggage cart, just is all around awesome. So we get the shit upstairs, unload the cold shit, and run back downstairs to drive to fucking ikea. We get there, figure out the closet thing I want is too big for my closet (sigh) and order the rest of the shit to be delivered here on the 11th. So that’s when I’ll have furniture again lol.
we go home and pass out. it’s 11, i’ve been running all day, this is deserved.
the next day we start unpacking. I'm dealing with my clothes, mom is doing the kitchen. I hear some ‘broken pottery pieces moving around noises’ and know i’m fucked. All my fucking plates except 3 are busted. They were sturdy old plates that looked like fiestaware I got at good will and have had for nearly 10 years. They're all still wrapped in my bubble wrap. Just fucking shattered. So. that’s something I need to deal with. So far they’re the only broken things we’ve found, but damn it’s going to be a pain to replace. So once the cable guy shows up 2 hours late, and finally gets that set up, mom and I run back to the apartment, grab the last box, and go to physically drop my keys off because my landlord sucks. We get stuck in traffic cause Western is shit again, and finally make the ‘20 min’ drive according to gps in about an hour. I drop them off, and we’re back at my condo. Mom and I unpack until she leaves in the evening and then I go to my room and get online and I haven’t unpacked shit since then. I’m going to after I type this out (and send a form to the office, and ask a polite question about how do I get amazon packages delivered to the package room because my smoke alarm does not work at all and the nice matience guy who discovered that yesterday let me off without a fine, cause he could see i’d literally just moved in, but I need to fix that). But like.... i’m actually in the room! and about half the boxes are unpacked!!! which is amazing!!!! so, it had some issues, but at least i’m fucking moved!

Self-driving truck startup Kodiak Robotics begin deliveries in Texas
A year after coming out of stealth mode with $40 million, self-driving truck startup Kodiak Robotics will begin making its first commercial deliveries in Texas.
Kodiak will open a new facility in North Texas to support it freight operations along with increased testing in the state. The commercial route
There are some caveats to the milestone. Kodiak’s self-driving trucks will have a human safety driver behind the wheel. And it’s unclear how significant this initial launch is; the company didn’t provide details on who its customers are or what it will be hauling.
Kodiak has eight autonomous trucks in its fleet, and according to the company it’s “growing quickly.”
Still, it does mark progress for such a young company, which co-founders Don Burnette and Paz Eshel say is due to its talented and experienced workforce.
Burnette, who is CEO of Kodiak, was part of the Google self-driving project before leaving and co-founding Otto in early 2016, along with Anthony Levandowski, Lior Ron and Claire Delaunay. Uber would acquire Otto (and its co-founders). Burnette left Uber to launch Kodiak in April 2018 with Eshel, a former venture capitalist and now the startup’s COO.
In August 2018, the company announced it had raised $40 million in Series A financing led by Battery Ventures . CRV, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Tusk Ventures also participated in the round. Itzik Parnafes, a general partner at Battery Ventures, joined Kodiak’s board.
Kodiak is the latest autonomous vehicle company to test its technology in Texas. The state has become a magnet for autonomous vehicle startups, particularly those working on self-driving trucks. That’s largely due to the combination of a friendly regulatory environment and the state’s position as a logistics and transportation hub.
“As a region adding more than 1 million new residents each decade, it is important to develop a comprehensive strategy for the safe and reliable movement of people and goods,” Thomas Bamonte, senior program manager of Automated Vehicles for the North Central Texas Council of Governments, said in a statement. “Our policy officials on the Regional Transportation Council have been very forward-thinking in their recognition of technology as part of the answer, which is positioning our region as a leader in the automated vehicle industry.”
Self-driving truck startup TuSimple was awarded a contract this spring to complete five round trips, for a two-week pilot, hauling USPS trailers more than 1,000 miles between the postal service’s Phoenix and Dallas distribution centers. A safety engineer and driver will be on board throughout the pilot.
Other companies developing autonomous vehicle technology for trucks such as Embark and Starsky Robotics have also tested on Texas roads.
