Brought on because I asked my dad about Dwarf planets and he asked me if Vulcan was still a thing?? And yeah kinda but it’s not in our system. Also because I think dwarf planets are cool and I want to know how much tumblr knows about them. Also also inspired by the hissy fit tumblr threw at @spookberry for daring to suggest Pluto is a dwarf planet. Which you know… it is.

Observations about Imotekh in Severed:

1.. It's actually kind of heartwarming that of all the necrons you could think of, Imotekh the Stormlord is willing to play along with Zahndrekh's illusions. While this is depicted as a matter of pragmatism (Chapter 2), it seems clear that the two nemesors have known each other for a long time, and place a lot of trust in one another.

2. Imotekh was a common soldier who worked his way up to nemesor, then phaeron. Zahndrekh is highborn. Knowing what necrons feel about hierarchical climbers, it would've been entirely natural for Zahndrekh to disdain Imotekh's existence, at least pre-biotransference; this, however, does not seem to be the case. Even in his state Zahndrekh toes the line, and is always loyal, never once doubting the Stormlord's commands.

3. Obyron suspects Imotekh sent Zahndrekh to Doahht to be killed (Chapter 7). I don't think this was Imotekh's intention, if only because he's bothered way too much with Zahndrekh to throw him away like that. Engrammatic decay/pattern ataxia is canonically non-fixable. For all Imotekh knows, Zahndrekh is only ever going to get worse - the truly pragmatic thing to have done would've been to oust him, like every other lord on Gidrim wants, and to do it on the spot. But Imotekh doesn't do that, he goes to the trouble of speaking his subordinate's language ('reckless' / 'stubborn' / 'troubled dynasties') so that Zahndrekh may continue to serve his dynasty. That's a level of accommodation a phaeron is in no way obliged to provide to his inferiors. Presumably Zahndrekh is just that good, or Imotekh understands something about vulnerability, or both.

4. Imotekh took a trillion hands. He took 1,000,000,000,000 hands. That's as many as a hundred billion tens. And that's terrible

Is karkat going to go through a similar arc as peridot?

Karkat's arc is a bit of a mix between Amethyst and Peridot, but both sorts of flipped on their heads!

The idea with Karkat is that he's a Jasper who woke up too early. Unlike Amethyst who woke up too late, Karkat emerges from his hole some hundred years before he's supposed to. The planet is incubating and not being super closely monitored because everything's all set and they're just waiting for the gems to grow. This leaves Karkat pretty much alone on a desolate, dark, dying planet.

He wishes for nothing more than to go back to sleep, he tries to crawl back into his hole multiple times waiting for consciousness to slip, but he can't go back to "keep growing" after he's emerged.

The longer you wait, the more your mind fills. It’d be wrong to call them memories, you didn’t exist before, so they can’t be memories. 

Purpose. What your purpose should be. You’re a Jasper, you’re a Quartz, made for war. You’re a soldier, you’re a warrior for Homeworld. You’re supposed to be big and strong, ready to fight for your creators, for your Diamond.

You’re supposed to fit your hole. You can’t.

So he makes a life of wandering the planet. It's cold and boring, so fucking boring, and he thinks a lot about what he could do. He thinks about how he's a failure to the Diamonds, swapping between fear of being discovered here and wanting nothing more than to interact and talk with another sentient being.

Unbeknownst to Karkat, another group of gems nears the Kindergarten. The Alpha Kids are a small group of rebel gems who stole a ship off Homeworld. Upon needing to stock up on supplies, Roxy locates an incubating Kindergarten that is long enough in its cycle for no gems to inhabit the planet, but early enough that they can still retrieve what they need. They land on the Kindergarten and Karkat eavesdrops, stunned to be witnessing actual living real people.

But Karkat realizes what they are, when he listens in and realizes that they're traitors.

He sees this as an opportunity. If he can turn these rebels in, then the Diamonds won't shatter him! He won't be a failure!

So he boards the ship, sneaking on as a stowaway. Roxy almost immediately finds him and it turns into that little scene.

Jane and Roxy convince Dirk to let Karkat live and stay aboard, and Karkat stays locked up in one of the rooms. He's like a little hissy cat, but he's also completely overwhelmed and overstimulated just being around things that aren't the Kindergarten.

With a lot of time and a lot of slowly building trust, Karkat starts to warm up to the Alpha Kids and eventually becomes a proper part of their squad.

The Rare Earth hypothesis used to distress me a lot when I was younger but nowadays it's kind of comforting to know that life-bearing planets are in manageable numbers to my brain. Because 40 billion habitable planets in the galaxy is a bit too much for my head.

Sometimes I think about the end of Padawan Lost arc and I'll remind myself that Anakin wasn't just apologizing to Ahsoka but to Shmi too. He couldn't save Ahsoka like he couldn't save Shmi. Even without the nightmares he must have been thinking, "It's happening again. It's happening again. IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN", because once more he's in a position where he has no power to save his loved one. At least in Shmi's case he knows where she is in theory, and felt something wrong. With Ahsoka, Anakin's completely in the dark from start to finish, he can't find her, can't feel her, all he knows is something bad DID happen but has to wait to hear something.

Even the end doesn't really provide any comfort because sure Ahsoka and the others were rescued, but it was out of pure luck Chewie's transmission worked. If the transmission hadn't gone through she and the other younglings were going to be brutally tortured, killed, and then turned into trophies. How do you hear any of that and not feel absolutely useless to the suffering of your charge? From Anakin's perspective, this must have been history repeating itself, but worse, because instead of being ignorant, he was powerless.
