magills work is referred to as idiosyncratic, her landscapes paintings have a subjective and pyschological approach. film and photography is central to her research, shaping the way she looks at landscape, and inspiring her approach to light, tone and atmosphere.

she comments on her own work, “My approach to painting is always experimental, allowing for previous attempts to give way to newer ones—it’s a kind of unfolding openness I try to follow.”. this reminds me to also experiment with my paintings and not fuss over the end result. aswell as to be open to different techniques.

the silhouettes of trees reminded me of my own drawings i did during this project. i like how, although noot so visible she meshes different images underneath the silhouettes, creating a dream-like atomsphere to them. as i was researching her in one of the articles, it was mentioned she works from memoriess. i feel like her work perfectly represents them, in our mind differerent memories overlap and we have often a fabricated vision of what happened. she shows that through the blurriness and haziness of the images under the trees.

So this is something that is being said about how "Engage couldn't commit to Alear being scared of the corrupted" and I feel the need to say it.

Dialogue doesn't equal to tell don't show. The purpose of the support is to focus on character traits and it shows them. Not tell. But show.

You want an example of a dialogue showing something ?

In Fates, in Conquest, in Azura and Corrin's C support, dialogue is used to show Corrin's anxiety. We have Corrin breaking a glass, Azura helping them out. The delivering for Corrin's cue using suspensing mark shows they are not ok. Azura's description and the music fitting the mode are all showing that Corrin is not ok, until Corrin finally explain they can't sleep because they feel guilty about the Hoshidan they killed

Another example of that. In Eddie and Byleth's support, it begin by Byleth hearing Edelgard screams "Father". This coupled by the night creating a glomy atomsphere to the point Byleth and Sothis though there was a ghost shows that Edelgard is scared and the little noises she is making that she is having a nightmare. And this even before she actually reveals her secret to Byleth. All of this is showing.

Now back to Alear. Outside from the many other dialogue and cutscene I had pointed out in the series of post dedicated to Alear's fear, the support conversation all expend on this and linked to the main story. In Diamant and Alear's C support, just as for Edelgard, we hear Alear screaming indicating they are terrified with a tense music. And when they get to explain that when they meet a Corrupted they end up frozing, it's adding up with the cutscene where we meet Lumera where Alear was to frozen to move seeing the Corrupted arrived, the one at the vault where Alear is incapable of moving as Veyle is about to perform her spell, or when Veyle saved them from nearly getting killed by the Corrupted in Firene since they were too paralyzed to move as shown throught the movement and the camera angle etc. This is also further expanded as being more then a simple fear but an actual PTSD trigger in the Alear Tiki bound where they confess they often makes nightmare, especially when they meet the Corrupted and this is what happened in the main story. The main story opens up with Alear making a dream that is a memory of the day of their first death portrayed in a romantized and heroic manner, how they wished the event had displayed. However, after fighting the Corrupted in chapter 1 and at the begining of chapter 3, they make a nightmare which is in reality a memory of the past. Alear's nightmare and dreams are in reality all memories, and the main story has several instance of Alear seeing something related to their past, Gradlon and Sombron, and feels a sense of deja vu. The Corrupted are that, trigger to Alear's memories.

And all of this built up to until chapter 24 when we meet Past Alear. And they are in such a broken state and additionally we have the reason why the Corrupted horrified Alear to the point that even with a post traumatic amnesia, they still recall that feeling of fear and those triggers. And that's not rexplainining the many, many, many times I analysed that one particular moment.

So just to put it simply, when something is being shown rather then told, you don't realize it right away else it's not showing, it's telling. A story doesn't have to hand you everything it has over, you are the one who need to dig up. If a media places you in a passive relationship where it hands you everything over, that's no good. It must create a dynamic relationship that push the audience to actually search for answer within the text itself, to dig, to work.

Supports exist for that.

And again, show and don't tell can be achieved through dialogue.

Stray reminds me of Dream saying "we could teach robots to love". His whole little segment on how technology might evolve in the near future reminds me of Stray. He had a pretty humane and warm take on it while most others seemed very doomposting. I really loved that :)

Like of course the robots loved, had kids and elderly and had homes and took care of plants, documented them, made little trinkets and toys and board games. Gushing over the goonies- semi review?

Originally I was going to make this my usual full on review, which have been lacking lately and that’s on me. However it’s not the first time I’ve seen the movie, the first time had to be over 10 years ago when I was extremely young, so Instead here’s me just gushing about how freaking amazing it is.

Genuinely funny-

This movie is just the funniest thing I’ve seen in awhile. Honestly comedy in older movies is completely unrivaled, I like my lack of feral kids and the oldest ™️ (turns out brand was 16 shsksksksk). without a doubt I think the best scene in the whole movie is

Chunk describing the Fratelli’s to the Fratelli’s and the light kicks on, he starts singing in Hebrew under his breath, the one starts Italian opera singing and this kid loses his fucking mind. It shouldn’t have made me laugh half as hard as it did but holy shit

It had good physical comedy, great lines and jokes. Like the repeating gag of Mikey mixing up words and brand correcting him and the same thing happening with their mother. Smart humor, dumb humor , semi slap stick. It has everything and I adore it, here’s a few lines I wrote down because they’re great

“It’s my moms most favorite piece!” “You wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t-.” “Shut up mouth!”

The sets the atomsphere! -

Oh my god just, the sets in this movie is amazing. The neighborhood alone I get such a feel for everyone, like how buildings reflect personality and kinda how people are sort of thing? How the houses are all together creating a close knit group. Just the beautiful scenery of outside and then the just the underground. The tunnels , the waterfall , the pirate ship cave is just so stunning? They didn’t need to go half as hard as they did

Relationships-

It has just the dynamics, the dynamics are golden. I like how the relationships are very real and life like and not the overly friendly weirdly chummy thing you see in a lot of movies? Like they’ll all In unison call you a dumbass but it’s clear your loved etc. Also the major major props that Brand and Mikey act like actually freaking siblings. Which I also gave that props to Sam and Micheal Emerson in the lost boys. As honestly a lot of movies have siblings way to friendly and chill, where’s my get in a huge fight only to later be hanging out with each other, no apologies or hugging it out just instantaneously back to normal.

Also what was the weird thing going on with Mouth and stef? There’s definitely more there but I feel like there’s a few scenes or something we’re missing?

Icelandic bands

There is something truly ethereal about bands that come from Iceland. Is it because of their country’s beautiful landscapes? Their breathtaking colours and their intense loneliness? It does gather a lot of material for a deeply emotional music.

Let’s travel to the other side of Europe and dive into calm and unique Icelandic songs.

1. Sóley

Sóley is an artist I discovered last year. I came across a live version of her song « I’ll Drown » in my YouTube recommendations and my heart melt. With a simple loop pedal, she creates a hypnotic atomsphere that took my breath away. I was instantly moved by the timbre of her voice and by the rhythm of the song.

As most Icelandic songs are, they are simple but extremely powerful and emotionally charged.

I would also highly recommend listening to « Endless Summer » which profoundly moved me as well.

2. Pascal Pinon

These twin sisters blew my mind with their album « Twosomeness ». I don’t know how many times I have listened to it. They sing both in Icelandic and in English and their songs are a mix of ethereal, breathtaking vocals and harmonies. I cannot recommend them enough.

The group has described their music as “simple and honest, filled with both melancholy and optimism. We hope to make music that can inspire, soothe heartaches and warm you inside.” (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal_Pinon_(band). And I couldn’t agree more.

Their third album, « Sundur » is just as beautiful.

3. Sigur Rós

You’ve most probably have already listened to one of their songs. Sigur Rós have written many score songs for famous movies and TV series (such as Black Mirror) and their songs were featured in many movie and series soundtracks as well (Upside Down, Orphan Black, Sense8...). The high-pitched voice of the singer will take you to another dimension.

4. Kaleo

Kaleo is a bit of a mix of different genres. The band is currently based in Texas (hence the deep blues and rock influences of songs such as « No Good » or « Broken Bones » - which are absolute treasures). Their entire album is magnificent and the last songs sound closer to the folk tradition. The singer, JJ Julius Son, has a really polyvalent and powerful voice that definitely took my breath away.

I always shed a little tear when I listen to "Vor í Vaglaskógi » which is an ode to Icelandic landscapes. The hypnotising rhythm of the electric guitar and strings and cannot leave you unmoved.

5. amiina

Amiina is a band whose music could fit in many movie soundtracks too. Mostly instrumental, their album will let you travel to different parts of the world with the power of their music only. Their songs are also really relaxing. And they are a female band! Here are a few songs that I’ve listened to a lot :

G'day, first of all - you're brilliant. Secondly, I'm getting back into drawing and one thing I've always been too overwhelmed by is colour. I really admire the way you colour your art, so I was wondering if you had any advice..? In any case, thank you and have a nice day!

Thank you so much for your kind words, they really mean so much to me! Honestly, I relate to you a lot because what I’m studying is more graphic design / media art related so I’m only just getting back into drawing too. I’m still looking for a good way to do things and improve my style and skills, however, there are few things that helped me that may help you get started!

1. Colour theory

This may be a bit of a boring point, but honestly, I think it’s really good to know your basics, because then you can use them to improve your art, and besides it’s always good to know the rules before you make an informed decision to break them. For example, using complementary colours can make something you want to pop. You also figure out how to use contrast. I recommend just googling it and going through it, the basic portion of it isn’t too long, or even finding a video on youtube. The color wheel is your friend!

2. Few more things to remember

I think the most important thing I learned in school when it comes to colours is to treat every colour not as a shade of your base, but as a whole other colour. For example, instead of drawing shades and shadows with a darker version of your base colour, choose a cooler colour instead.

Keep lighting in mind. Not only does the direction of light determines where the shadows and highlights are going to be, the colour of the light itself can also determine the colours of your shadows.

Don’t be afraid to use blending modes. They’re there for a reason and it’s an easy way to build your shadows if you slap an overlapping layer on multiply, or perhaps choose to add an illuminating glow to something on color dogde.

Using adjustment layers, textures, gradients. I know some people don’t like to use it in art, but I personally sometimes use them to create the sort of atomsphere I want.

You can just as easily draw something in black an white and then build the colour on blending modes, but I only do that when I’m doing more of a painting style thing. With fanart I usually only make a black and white sketch and then fill out the lines and colour it.

3. Colour palettes

Generally what I find useful is keeping a separate layer for swatches of colour I used when I’m drawing. It’s a useful trick that can help you build a comprehensible palette you can build on as you go. It’s also good for actually seeing if the colours will work together at all, plus it’s an easy access to pick the same colour again if you want.

As for actually choosing colours, I do often just choose what I think might work, but it’s a trial and error method, and it helps a lot when you already have experience (though not necessarily, some people have a lot of intuition with these things). But there are many other ways to get yourself started if you don’t feel comfortable with colour just yet.

First of all, you can find a plethora of palettes online. Just google color palettes and a handful of websites or google images will pop up. Some that I personally liked in the past are:

COLORMIND - generates palettes from scratch.

COOLORS - generates palettes from scratch.

PALETTON - generates palettes from a color wheel picker.

MYCOLOR - generates palettes from a color picker.

CANVA - generates palettes from an uploaded picture.

If you want to create your own palette from a picture you like and perhaps don’t want to upload it anywhere, you can always just do it yourself. All you really have to do is open your picture in Photoshop.

The first thing you do is go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and blur the picture.

Then once again go to Filter > Pixelate > Crystallize and then you have your palette.

Anyway, I’m sure there are more things but I honestly can’t remember them right now. I recommend just trying it all for yourself and finding your own way to do things. I believe that you can do it and it’s really fun to just experiment, even if it doesn’t end up looking exactly like you wanted. It rarely does for me, but it’s a learning experience! I hope this was in any way helpful and good luck to you!

A Game of Thrones: My thoughts/review.

A few months ago I purchased the very first installment in the ‘ A Song of Ice and Fire’ book series entitled ‘A Game of Thrones’ (yes I know I am quite a few years late, but better late than never), to see what all the fuss and hype was around this book series that has launched a TV series which has been hailed as one of the greatest shows of all time minus Season 8 (a joke I am yet to understand).

Right from the very begining, Martin draws you in with intrigue and mystery in the first few pages. Very few authors manage to really draw you into a scene/book within those pages, but Martin does it incredibly. He does well to set the atomsphere of a scene and the way in which he describes the world, it’s surroundings and the characters who inhabit it, make for serious and compelling reading.

Atmosphere:

In a book series such as this, atmosphere is everything and Martin knows how to create it. For example, in the scene after King Robert’s death, where Ned confronts Cersei and the newly crowned King Jeoffry; as a reader, you can feel the tension in the scene and it becomes more and more palpabale with each line. The build up until Littlefinger’s betrayal is so wonderfully written and is one of the best (and most heartbreaking) twists in the entire book. (Fuck you Littlefinger you bearded cock, I was rooting for you)

Another great moment is the reveal that Maester Aemon is a Targaryen. Like most twists, you never expect them; but that one came really out of left field. The scene leading up to in which Aemon tells Jon that he must deside where his true loyalties must lie is one of the best scenes in the novel and a great character scene for Jon.

The world of ASOIAF:

Each region, each location of the world never feels tacked on. They always serve some level of purpose. Be it a small tavern on the Kingsroad to a Sept and Godswood within a Kingdom’s castle, each place plays the role of a cog in a much larger engine that is the story of A Game of Thrones.

As for how the world is written; again Martin does that spectacularly. You feel the chill in the air of Winterfell, or the sweltering heats of Vaes Dothrak. The freezing winds of the Wall, and dizzying heights of the Eyrie. Whilst obviously not real, you, as the reader, feel as if they are (I know this is a basic of good writing but he is bloody good at it). Each region/Kingdom feels well lived in and when characters go to places within the areas such as the crypts of Winterfell or beyond the wall, you can feel the history of those places seeping through the pages which is a testiment to how good of a writer and a worldbuilder Martin truely is.

Characters:

A Game of Thrones is nothing, if not full to the brim with characters. Whilst it does have it’s avangtages, such as making the world feel more lived in, it does have it’s downsides. For example I became confused during the scene where Dany attempted to use the magic of Mirri Maz Duur to help Drogo come back to full health, the fight outside the tent became difficult to follow when you forget who are Drogo’s bloodriders and who are Dany’s “bodygaurds”.

However there are some superbly written character and others who I would like to see where their character goes from here. The main players in the story like Ned and Catelyn, Cersei, Jon, Dany, Tyrion are some of the best written characters in the whole novel. I would like to see where Ayra’s story goes following on from Ned’s execution (can we get an F in the chat for Eddard?), how Sansa treats her betrothal to King Jeoffry (the little shitgobblin), more of Jorah’s backstory, and how Robb will be treated as King of the North.

Conclusion:

As an introduction into the series ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’, ‘A Game of Thrones’ is an excellent first novel. From the writing to the dialouge and to the characters; this is a book that will have you laughing at something that King Robert has said such as “I'm not trying to honor you. I'm trying to get you to run my kingdom while I can eat, drink and whore my way to an early grave” to gasping in shock at the Littlefinger’s betrayal of Ned. George R.R. Martin has sealed his legacy as a superb writer in just one book. That isn’t to say that there are scenes/moments that aren’t great and those that leave me feeling rather uncomfortable. But by and large, it is a great book with great characters and some truly amazing moments. So now I move onto book two, and see if winter, is truly coming.
