The 2022 Inklings Challenge is almost upon us! And I am going feral over the images that have been put forth as themes for this year's challenge (this is more or less my ground state of being when it comes to Biblical imagery at the moment). So I thought I'd gather together some of the resources that are Currently Giving Me Thoughts in case anyone else would like to go feral with me. I put off posting this because I wanted thoughts for all of the themes, but ended up only having resources I wanted to share for tree/water/bread (but please tell me if you have anything for the others!)
note: this is heavy on the Bible Project which is largely because they introduced me to this way of thinking about imagery, and very few of my theology books have the right approach to be helpful here. Also, there's at least 10 hours of podcasts here, enter at your own risk.
General use of metaphor in the bible (2) (3) (this is mainly an overview of approaches to Biblical imagery/metaphor, but also touches on some of the themes - )
Tree (this one is my favourite change my mind) tree of life video trees in Genesis a whole tree podcast series (I'm about halfway through listening to this one but it's starting well)
Water water of life video from St Thomas Aquinas:

Bread just a song I like this article has a section on John's account of feeding the 5000 (also briefly light and water imagery) from Generous Hospitality by Wayne Kirkland:

I know it won't happen but if we're doing a Missy redemption arc I would love to see Nyssa come back. Or at least mentioned. Because out of ALL the Doctor's companions, the Master probably damaged Nyssa the most. He stole her father's face and used it, the man who murdered Nyssa's father took his very body and every time Nyssa saw him (and he was a pretty major villain in that era from memory) he looked like her dad.
And man if Missy is having a redemption arc which I am all for love me redemption arcs, I would so love what the Master did to Nyssa to be brought up. Because DANG that is lowkey one of the most messed up Doctor Who stories ngl poor Nyssa

all the ways in which i go absolutely feral over that dinner at the Hamiltons’ scene in XII even before XIII hits, like.
a (very long) summary:
the blocking - thomas and earl shithead are facing each other at the table and the camera usually focuses on each in turn as they are speaking, with the angle getting closer to their faces as the tension builds. all this while miranda and james are caught between them (ain’t that so indicative of everything) and looking at each other and then at the two of them like they’re at an extremely intense tennis match. also, the lighting is excellent.
the tension - so many clenched hands on the table (thomas’ tension is all there for most of it), and miranda’s posture is rigid until they are finally left alone when she allows herself to actually lean on the backrest. also james’ face is getting very restless throughout all this.
the gazes: there’s a lot of them going on, but thomas looks at james three poignant times (before earl shithead leaves that is). the first one when they look at each other in that ‘thomas no/thomas yes’ way, the second when thomas steals a glance at james when shit is starting to unravel quickly, and the third when james stands. james looks at him far more often and far longer throughout this whole thing and idk i have feelings about how hard thomas is trying to control everything even though it fails.
‘they’re easy, i haven’t even opened my mouth to make an argument’ Thomas Hamilton, OG weaver of narrative, fully aware of the power of language.
‘we are fighting a war in the service of the son of god, and it is treason to offer forgiveness to any man who would seek it? what in the hell is it you think we’re doing here?’ is obviously in keeping with thomas’ beliefs, but even though they’re seemingly very of his time, he’s actually skipping ahead in very groundbreaking ways with all this. plus, we hit the big ol’ forgiveness theme, which brings us to:
‘if you do not forgive men their sins, your father will not forgive your sins’ and ‘i don’t want to hear it!’ and ‘i know you don’t.’ now, i don’t spend a lot of my time thinking of thomas as jesus apart from select moments like this but. holy hell the biblical enormity of this entire exchange. plus, the resurrection. plus, a war in service of him. YA FEEL. oh god what has this show done to me, send help.
the way Miranda just bears all this kills me. she’s entirely unsurprised by how it’s going, entirely unsurprised that she’s getting insulted like that and a casualty of this war. she’s just weathering the hurricane but oh her expressions. when earl shithead dies, he’s not just paying for thomas’ and thomas’ loss.
thomas’ face: until he finally loses his entire chill at ‘what in the hell is it you think we’re doing here’ he keeps his expression carefully blank, but then more and more flickers of what he’s feeling keep showing, and then when james stands up for him. god, his face there when he’s looking at earl shithead is everything. there’s both triumph and shock, and obviously a whole lot of ‘oh, fuck’ but he doesn’t seem like he expected james to do that. even at that point it’s career suicide for james, and an extremely dangerous move politically. even before their relationship changes. and the way thomas’ voice breaks and the tears in his eyes, just. he’s not used to having back-up against his father. not the kind of back-up that his father would actually take notice of, at least. miranda IS formidable but to earl shithead she’s nothing. one of his many mistakes. which brings us to:
JAMES MCGRAW FLINT ABSOLUTELY OWNING THE FUCK OUT OF EARL SHITHEAD NEEDS TO GO ON MY URN, THANK YOU. he stands up for both of his hamiltons and godddd. especially because the moment he’s done talking he becomes so extremely aware of what he’s done. he just stares at the table clutching his serviette and he knows. and then he just drops that serviette on the table and you can just hear the unspoken ‘fuck’ of it all. and he just keeps staring at the table while miranda looks at both of them. he only looks at thomas after thomas says he’s in the line of fire. when he has to tell thomas:
‘people can say what they like about you, but you’re a good man. more people should say that. and someone should be willing to defend it.’ and then he looks right back down at the table while trying to breathe.
intermission while i go scream in the woods about this.
ok, i’m back. thomas’ face when james calls him good kind of breaks me because...growing up with an abusive parent fucks you up. especially if, as i suspect, earl shithead has always found him entirely lacking. entirely un-good. and here’s a man, a career-driven ambitious man who needs this position to prove himself worthy to society. risking it all. for thomas.
THEY HAVEN’T EVEN KISSED YET???
anyway, there’s lots more details here but i could go on forever. this scene is absolutely a masterpiece, both in XII and when we see the rest of it in XIII.

beginners guide to Razia’s shadow.
i remember i was rly confused going into Razia’s shadow. i couldn’t tell if it was a musical or just an album and when i did listen to the song i had to use wikpedia n stuff to figure out the plot. so here’s a little guide for anyone curious about Razia’s shadow!
to begin there is two versions of razia’s shadow. the album is the original. on of the people who worked on the album went on to make a play version that has a pretty different plot. i honestly don’t know much about the play version so i’ll only talk about the album today
the album’s story is split into two halves. the first half is about the creation of the world and a rebellious angel. it sets up a lot of the exposition for the second half.
the second half takes place 100 years after the first half. it’s about star crossed lovers in a very Romeo and Juliet esque story.
so the songs themselves can be a little hard to understand without extra knowledge. i’ve heard the cd version has a little booklet which probably goes over what you miss but as i listened to it on spotify and i’m sure others will too here's little summary of the plot of each song so you can understand what’s happening.
Genesis: this one is about O the scientist and his head Angel Ahrima creating the world. O is basically god, he made all the angels and had Ahrima help with world building. Ahrima views O as a father figure.
. the world’s name is never mentioned in the song but it’s Razia, hence the album title. the song ends with Ahrima bitter about how his talents were used. his temper cools though when he’s with Nidria. another angel he’s deeply in love with.
Missing Piece: this song is basically Ahrima confessing his love to Nidria and them getting together. like the previous song Ahrima complains about how he was meant for better greater things. Nidria agrees but encourages him to be patient.
life is looking up: Ahrima has a great idea that he’s sure will impress O the Scientist and get him the recognition he feels he deserves. he has blueprints for “the lamps”
now the lamps are never fully explained but i believe they’re implied to be the stars, moon, and sun.
Ahrima shows them to O. O is proud but not in the way Ahrima wants. the lamps are still built but they still don’t give Ahrima the recognition he desired. Ahrima feeling jealous and bitter storms of to the dark to cool down and think.
while there a little brown spider named Barayas perches on his shoulder.
spider and the lamps: in this song Barayas says he’s heard of Ahrima and is impressed with his skills.
he tells Ahrima that the angel is special but they still treat him like a kid. he encourages Ahrima to be more bitter and angry. he convinces Ahrima to tear the lamps to the grown in revenge for how he was treated.
the song ends with Ahrima doing just that. Toba the Tura is called to place judgment on him. i’ll go into more detail on Toba in the next song
Barayas is only mentioned in this song. i’m not sure why he wanted to mess stuff up. seeing as there’s a lot of like biblical themes in the first half i assume it’s a reference to the snake in adam and eve
Toba the Tura: Toba is one of many one off characters. he acts as a sort of judge/enforcer and has come to pass his judgment on Ahrima.
he starts of gentle. almost siding with Ahrima a little. he then goes into detail on how Ahrima tore down the lamps, scorching the earth, and destroying the angel’s homes.
Toba has a bit where he sings about Ahrima’s betrayal while Ahrima sings of being guilty and pleading to O.
Toba says Ahrima must stay in the dark while the other angels leave to the light. a massive mountain is put up to block them
the Oracle: this one introduces us to our 3rd one off character,  Gargul the Oracle.
he, and the other angels, come to the dark to Tell Ahrima of a prophecy. the prophecy states that someone from the light and dark will fall in love with each other and reunite the world.
this song also has a little bit of Nidria and Adakaias singing together again so that’s cute.
intermission: this one just shows 100 years have past.
The Exit: there’s two brother princes in the dark. the youngest is named Adakias and the oldest Pallis. they both grew up listening to stories of the prophecy and such.
there’s another one off character here called Sangara. they’re only point in the song is to say Adakaias should be more like his brother. i believe they’re a servant of some kind.
anyways Pallis is very down to earth and responsible while Adakais has a big romantic streak. he believes he’s the chosen one in the prophecy and longs to go to the light
Pallis say’s that’s stupid, the prophecy isn’t real, and if he leaves he’ll hunt him down.
Adakias still leaves anyway. he goes to the light and falls for a princess there named Anhura.
True Love: this songs is basically just Adakais and Anhura confessing love to eachother
they sing about being in love, Adakias sings about not being able to reveal his past, then they decide to get married. the only problem is they have to face Anhura’s father.
The King: the newest one off character, King Malka, Anhura’s father.
Adakais and Anhura sing about wanting permission to be married and that Adakais isn’t after the crown. king Malka still says no.
they decide to Elope but before they can Anhura falls seriously ill.
he believes it’s caused by him being from the dark and decides to take her to a special doctor he knows of back in the dark. he convinces her to go without revealing his past.
Holy the Sea: at this point it’s important to note that there is some sort of body of water between the light and dark. i think someone said it was a river that eroded the top of the mountain?
anyways they have to cross it to get to the doctor. they meet two longshoremen brothers (you guessed it, one off)
Anhura is like passed out on the boat ride as the brothers talk to Adakias about the prophecy and that he’s a decedent of Ahrima. Adakias only becomes more convinced of his destiny
the song ends with the couple arriving at the doctors shack.
The Doctor: the doctor is here and he’s feral. he says he can cure Anhura but in return he demands the stay with him in his hut to fulfill his fantasies. Anhura argues and first but Adakias says to trust him and just do it.
the doctor cures her but they can do anything Pallis busts in.
The End and the Beginning: Pallis shows up and he’s pissed.  he talks about following the couple and that Anhura could never love poor boys like them. (no i don’t know why he says their poor when they’re princes back home. maybe the dark is just rly poor or maybe he was lying)
Anhura and Adakias sing about how money doesn't matter and she loves him.
Pallis switches gears and reveals Adakias is from the dark. Adakias quickly patches things up with Anhura saying he meant to tell her sooner but that they’re still in love.
Pallis only get more annoyed and reveals Adakias is the reason Anhura gets sick and goes to stab her.
Adakias leaps in the way and gets stabbed instead.
Adakias forgives his brother as he dies and basically tells Anhura and Pallis to take care of the world for him.
his act of sacrifice reunites the two halves of the world.
after that the ending is purposely open ended leaving room for the listener to decide how it goes from there.
and there you have it! the last thing i’d like to talk about is the cannon art. it exists but for the most part people don’t use it so feel free to get creative with how you see the character!
anyways, that’s all i’ve got for now! feel free to add on if you have any more helpful information!

FOR THE WIP POST. FOUR, FIVE, FOURTEEN, AND FIFTEEN. I AM V INTERESTED.
what came first, the title or the plot? - 100% the plot. i don't think i've ever had a title come to me naturally, most of the time when writing fics i borrow from song lyrics and i do not know how to go about naming my og work in the slightest, possibly because my writing is always a frankenstein-esque mess of multiple genres and inspirations lmaooo. like? murder mystery mixed with comedy mixed with young adult mixed with sci-fi mixed with grand fantasy mixed with political commentary? how am i??? supposed to title that????
where do you draw inspiration from? - ooo loads of things! i have a tendency to latch onto the weirdest things from multiple sources of media, like sometimes i'll hear a song and a character will drop into my head, sometimes i'll read a character in a comic or a book and think "i like them, but how could they be improved to my tastes?", sometimes i'll watch a tv show and think "i like the concept but the actors execute it poorly", sometimes i'll watch a movie and really love it and want to find a way to incorporate the themes in an environment/world i like better! with this one specifically, i'd say a healthy amount of futurama, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, the bands talking heads & arcade fire, the kingsmen movies, altered carbon on netflix, blade runner (final cut specifically), and a bunch of mixed of characters from loads of books, comics, tv shows and movies haphazardly shoved together into a pot where i just hope for the best jsnsjshsh
tell us about an upcoming scene in your wip, one your excited about - ooo! haven't written so much as thought about it and vaguely drafted it but! my werewolf character (who doesn't rlly have a set name bc i'm indecisive 😅 it will be a name with a d or a g or a b involved, that much i'm sure of) constantly gets stereotyped as being a feral, ravaging monster with no control and everyone's scared of him? but he's also got like a generalised anxiety disorder that comes out as him standing around too long or whatever or staring super intensely into people's eyes when they talk so. that doesn't help. but his teammates are literally like? stoner half elf vampire mix, a gay 19 year old sorcerer looking for his dad, his bf fae lover who would eat literal garbage if u let him, a himbo angel (like literal biblical angel) who does not know What The Fuck Is Going On at any given point in time and an alien cyborg clone they stole from the government. so like. someone will b like. low-key offensive as fuck like "do your teammates ever have to reel you in bc of your monster side, i bet you really just want to give in, the thought of meat must drive you crazy" and like. pan to this chaotic group and pan back to this actually well put together adult who basically takes a super long nap every full moon who's just. so fucking tired sjsnejeh
post a line from your wip that you've been working on - uh this is more like a small scene but uh 👉👈 here
Cadfael would have liked someone else to speak to, not, you know, someone who made his skin literally begin to melt off if he stood too close, but between crumbling to a smoking pile of dust and bones, and an awkward silence, he'd take the former.
“Do you ever think-” he started, only to be cut off by his large new crewmate.
“No. I make an effort not to”
Cadfael stared at him now, regardless of the way it made his eyes sting like they were being sliced open, and wondered if his death would be worth kissing this strange, stupid man (did angels have genders? He didn't seem to mind being called “he”, but Cadfael knew better than to assume) right on the mouth.
He thought about it a bit more, then decided that crumbling to ash while making out wasn't very sexy, and he'd probably just traumatise the poor man. And also die. Which would suck.
send me asks about my wip!

So, without further ado, proceed and enjoy!
Brief Introduction
Tumblr media
Ana María Matute (1925 - 2014) was a Spanish writer and member of the Real Academia Española, which, summing it up, is the insttution that regulates the Spanish language in Spain. It’s a great honor to be a member of the RAE, and she was the third woman in the history of this institution to be conceded a seat in it. She is considered one of the most personal and raw voices of the 20th century in Spanish literature, and one of the best posguerra (which is the period following the Spanish Civil War) novelists. She wrote novels, short stories, children tales and essays. She was considered in 1976 for the Nobel Literature Prize and won numerous literature prices, among which was the Premio Cervantes, the most prestigious literature prize in the Spanish language.
Matute was a professor at university, and she traveled to many cities to give lectures, especially to the US. In her speeches, she talks about emotional changes, the constant changes of the human being and how innocence is never cmpletely lost. She said that although her body was old, her heart was still young.
Here is a small article by The New York Times, published some days after her death in 2014, that contains some more info about her biography and career.
Style
Matute deals with many political, social and moral aspects of Spain during the post-war period. Her prose is lyrical and practical, and she incorporates techniques associated with modernism and surrealism. However, Matute is considered a realist writer. Many of her books deal with the period of life ranging from childhood to adolescence to adulthood.
Matute uses, as a primary resource, pessimism, which, in her novels, often manifests in the form of alienation, hypocrisy, demoralization and malice. About her work, it is said that although the arguments of each of her novels are independent, they are all united by the general theme of Civil War and the portrait of a society dominated by materialism and self-interest.
Also, during the 1940s in Spain, a new literary aesthetic, which came to be known with the name of tremendismo, was born. The main aesthetic features of tremendismo revolve around the experiences of authors during the Civil War, and the misery and insecurity that were characteristic of post-war Spain. Tremendismo is heavily based on pessimistic, determinist and fatalist philosophies; it shows the darkest aspects of life, such as failure and death, and relates them to existentialism. Protagonists of novels belonging to tremendismo are usually marginal beings from the lowest layers of society, with primitive minds and without spiritual values or sensitivity. They often commit errors that lead them to tragic consequences, but they can’t be blamed because it is society that leads them to act that certain way. In this way, the worst part of human beings, highlited by an unfair society, is shown.
Los Abel
“I have arrived and nobody waits for me, because I have not warned anyone and I do not know anyone. It is difficult to define contours. The town, sunk in the bottom of the valley, is a ghost of violet lividness: like an unfortunate overcrowding of half-ruined hovels.”
Tumblr media
Los Abel (1948) was Ana María Matute's first published novel and is, to this day, basically unknown. “Why are you going to talk about a novel that is not even considered her most relevant work?” you may ask. Well, simply because I love it, and it was a major inspiration for both my first poemary and my current WIP, Sunflowers at Night. The publication of this work was considered a literary revelation, a fact that would be confirmed in the successive works presented by its author.
Ana María Matute wrote Los Abel, a work that obtained a brilliant classification in the 1945 Premio Nadal, at the young age of 21. Inspired by the biblical story of Adam and Eve, a reflection of the enviroment after civil strife, it’s the dark story of a family living sad and tormented lives, very few of which escape the climate of anguish and exhaustion. Matute manages to create a tense, passionate and even feral atmosphere.
Plot *(WARNING. Spoilers ahead.)
The story is told in the first person by two different characters. The narrator in chapters I-IV is a young man who returns to a town he visited with his mother when he was a child. In these chapters he remembers his first encounter with the Abel family and then describes the town and the people who live there during his visit. The man rents the old house of the aforementioned family and there he finds the diary of Valba Abel, one of the sisters who lived there. So, the second narrator is Valba, or more precisely, chapters V-XXIX represent her personal diary in which she tells the sad story of her family.
This story takes place in a post-war rural landscape, where the family, formed by the father and his seven children: Oswaldo, Augusto, Tito, Valbanera, Juan Nepomuceno, Octavio and Ovidia — who prefer to be called by the nicknames  Aldo, Gus, Tito, Valba, Juan, Tavi and the youngest simply, the Small One — all with very different personalities. Their mother has died and the father tries to maintain the unity of the family, using their land and house for that. However, life in a poor monotonous rural area  is not enough for young people who show different abilities and have their own interests. Only the older brother, Aldo, is interested in cultivating the land and continuing with the traditional life of their parents: the other siblings want to escape from the village and live in the city.
After some gray and depressive winters, the children leave, one after the other, the orchard of their father, and move to the city. There they try to start new and different lifes, but their destiny takes them back to the village, where two of the brothers, Aldo and Tito, different as day and night, have such serious problems with each other that the first kills the second.
The protagonist
Valba is the representation of the rare girl, a very common protagonist in female post-war novels, who has a lonely character, looks unfeminine to other women and who is looking for her own identity. But in addition to the features that are typical to the rare girl trope, Matute adds to Valba a kind of darkness and depth. The town doctor describes her with the following words: "What deep eyes: a whole world enclosed within. To tell you the truth, I have never seen a look like that. Only sometimes do beggars in ditches have that look, or the hungry. And she looked like a child, with her indecisive hands. She had wolf teeth, hurtful as little daggers.”
After the death of her mother, Valba has to leave her studies in the city and return home, where she has difficulty finding her place among her brothers. She often feels redundant, without a way out and guilty that she lets her life go by without really living it, repeating phrases like: "I felt ridiculous, useless, small" and "I'm tired of not living." Even though she doesn’t like her sitaution, she doesn’t really try to make it better, thus acquiring a typical property of the protagonists in tremendismo.
The few moments of joy in Valba's diary are related to love or with the hope that she would find love. The romantic story with Galo, an artist in the city, offers hope for a happy ending but becomes a failure that destroys Valba's soul and eliminates her optimism for a better future- She feels indifference towards life: "How many hours still extending before me! It is possible that I will still live for many years; what a great tedium youth is, how a great tedium, a whole life still to be traveled, to drag behind me! "  Valba also loses the ability to see love as something pure and beautiful: "I was like the top of a mountain. If I ever loved again, my feeling would drag a chorus of ridicule and parodies."
The violent and extreme situations are typical of tremendismo. In the case of Los Abel it’s not so much about violence as it is about death and intense moments forming a continuous chain during the story. Valba's narrative begins with the death of her mother who leaves her husband and seven children behind, some of them very young, who have to grow up under the harsh guidance of their father. To this event follows the death of the village’s teacher and although no one really cries for him, it is an adversity for the people. Later, Juan gets sick and ends up crippled. Then, when the littlest sister is preparing for her First Communion, the church is burned. A flood follows the fire: the river rises on its banks and threatens to take the house of the Abel with him. But the house, the strongest link in the family, continues in its place, at the foot of the mountains. In these mountains, Valba's father loses his life later on, and this event marks the beginning of the last chapter of the Abel family. Afterwards, there is no unifying force and the brothers who have remained in the village leave their home one after the other.
Matute completes the book with a violent ending. As we mentioned, Aldo, the eldest brother kills Tito, the luckiest brother of the seven. This crime is caused by years of envy and anger that have been growing inside Aldo. When he gets home and sees that Tito, whom his wife loves, is doing successful restructuring in the land of their parents, he can’t tolerate the injustice and shoots him. With this event, Matute uses for the first time the symbol of the Cainism, the known crime of the Bible, very frequent in her later works.
And so, the novel ends with this sublime piece of writing I felt the necessity to share with you guys:
“The two thunderous shots resounded, much more than the whole storm of our flood. The walls trembled and a thousand cries creaked on the stairs. The two bullets sank into that golden flesh, into that chest that always breathed rhythmically. But what revenge was that? What revenge ...? My God, Tito was youth! And I fell to my knees, and with that blood of his that was already sliding between the joints of the mosaics, I wet my face, as if it were a caress.
This is what I read."
And...
Tumblr media
I really hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it! If you guys have any questions, please ask me!!!

Survey #203
I’m not dead, World of Warcraft just devoured my life again.
Have you ever been inside of an abandoned building? Yes; a shack first, but we picked up the courage to just barely set foot into this small building absolutely littered with newspapers and such. Almost went into the main house, but my sister, friend, and I were too intimidated by the idea. I didn't want to imagine what could be in there; already anxious by that age, I worried about feral animals or homeless being in there. Have you ever actually believed in monsters? (Like as a kid) Yes, I think. Do you have any fascination with the macabre? Examples? Oh boy, do you know me? I find most gore cool, I love bone art/vulture culture sort of stuff, I find death and decay fascinating, then there's the roadkill photography I do (done in only great respect/to show the horror of what we can cause), dark and especially gory artwork... I could go on for a while. Do you actually think skeletons are scary? I LOVE skeletons, add that to the above list. I was always excited in school if our science class had a replica in it. What monster movie is your favorite? This is broad... You mean like, actual monsters? Not like Freddy Krueger, per se, and focused on them? Hell I dunno, maybe Monsters Inc., lol. Is Hocus Pocus really a good movie, or a bit overrated? We cannot associate if you so much as dislike Hocus Pocus. What witch-themed movie/show is your favorite, anyhow? See above. Do you like The Nightmare Before Christmas? Hell yeah. Ha, pretty funny though: I'm not obsessed with the movie or anything, yet people give me sooooooo much Jack Skellington stuff for my birthday and/or Christmas. I do love Jack, totally, but you'd assume I was more in love with the character than I actually am. Do you count it as a Halloween movie and a Christmas movie? Halloween, for me. Do you like Jack or Sally better? Jack. What other Tim Burton works do you enjoy, if any? Corpse Bride and Alice in Wonderland are my absolute favorites, then there's Frankenweenie, Beetlejuice, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach (literally my lil sis's and my childhoods), and probably more. I just love him. Are there any ‘dark’ or ‘spooky’ films you recommend? Absolutely the original Blair Witch Project. Spoiler, you never see the "witch," and that just made it so much spookier, particularly when there's a scene that seems to have a high chance of her showing up on the camera. It's very convincing in selling it as "based on a true story;" the characters act realistic in the situations they're in and are very dedicated to acting well. It's my personal definition of a "good" horror movie. If anything, shit, watch it for the ending. Creepiest goddamn thing. Just for fun – what would your personal hell look like? Yeesh, let's not visualize that... On Supernatural, do you like the angels or demons better? I am way, WAY behind, but from very faint memories, I believe the demons. Have you ever purchased anything from an occult or New Age shop? What? No. Do you know any Pagans/Wiccans? I believe one of my old friends is Wiccan? Do you know any Satanists? I don't believe so. Would you ever keep a tarantula as a pet? Nah. Are there any urban legends in your area? What are they? Looked it up and apparently NC does have some, but idk about *my* area. Do you find dead trees beautiful? Some, like really big ones. Who was the last person you sat next to? Mom. Are you embarrassed to let others see you without makeup? No. Have you ever had a nickname at your church? If so, what? Don't believe so, when I grew up going to church. What was the last stuffed animal you bought? Not sure. Maple trees, fir trees, or palm trees? Maple. Which biblical name do you prefer: Naomi, Esther, Rachel, or Joanna? Naomi, easily. I used to want to name my hypothetical daughter that. Which biblical guys name do you prefer: Seth, Jedidiah, Ezra, or Buz? Seth. Who is the hardest working person you know? MY. MOTHER. She works her fucking ASS off; I'd like to see most people handle even a single day in her life. Can you name any songs by Godsmack? A few: "No Rest For The Wicked," "Whatever," "Mama," "Voodoo," "Voodoo Too," "Hollow," "Time Bomb," "The Enemy," and... that may be it? What has been the most exciting moment of your life thus far? Meeting Sara. How deeply do you care for your education? Is it something you take seriously? I don't really know how to answer this. Like... I care, but I don't care enough to be competitive about it or obsess over it. I target for just being "enough." Would you prefer to go to a beach or to a park for a day, and why? What would you do? Park. The beach is too hot, windy, and I hate the feel of sand. Idk what I'd do at the park considering there are various kinds... What are five things you own in your favorite color? Witty, I guess. What do you think about video games? One of the greatest technological achievements. Video games brought forth a new form of entertainment to enjoy, one that can hold someone's focus for hours and stay fun. They can also tell fantastic stories, just like reading a book or watching TV, and the more and more realistic in vision games are becoming, it just becomes easier with every game to feel more immersed in the universe. What would you, or do you, study at college? I'm going for zoology. Have you ever had, or wanted, a pet ferret? Oh my god in Heaven, yes. They are so damn cute; when Sara was here and we were in PetSmart for something, I actually started tearing up and squealing because of how GODDAMN PRECIOUS THEY WERE, like they all came up to the glass pawing at us, and watching them play was one of the cutest things I've ever seen. The only thing holding me back from getting one is the fact I know they are veeery messy and require a lot of care. Is there anything you find undeserving of the hype it received? Eh, don't feel like thinking about this. In other words, idk and idc. Do you think it’s better to label yourself than be labelled? Who cares, honestly. Don't restrain yourself with a label, and what others see in you and you following along with it solely because of that is naive. What’s something you do a lot? Over-evaluate anything and everything, because my OCD has been an absolute beast for the longest time. Are you currently on any other websites? Twitch and deviantART are open. Have you ever been told you naturally tilt your head a certain way? YES. I have done this since like... late middle school or earlier when the hair to the right of my part covered my eye. When was the last time you laughed at someone? Some time earlier when I was watching Mark play GTA. Do you have any projects on the go right now? We were never alone with him or anything, I mean he did it right in front of our mother and dad (he fucking loathed him because of it, probably still does), so we think he was joking? Have you ever climbed a chain-link fence? Yes. Have you ever had to run from the cops? No. Do you know anyone who is constantly humming? No? Are you afraid of any specific animals? It made sense when I wasn't even beginning to heal, but now that I am and I STILL have them despite having fully and entirely moved on, I finally just asked my mother if it was normal, which apparently it is extremely common with even "recovered" PTSD victims. Shoulda asked/looked it up way sooner... Do you visit your dentist as often as you should? Yeah, thanks to Mom. She always ensures I stay updated with medical exams/appointments. I've never even used a check... How many speeding tickets have you been given? None. Not that I drive a lot. First kiss: quick, sloppy, and forgettable or passionate and memorable? It was fucking adorable and definitely memorable. I don't care how I feel about him now, that's a little event I'll always remember and cherish. Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Ron White, or Larry the Cable Guy? OH GOD what was that stand-up show with just them? I LOVED that back as a teen. I don't know who I liked most, but probably Jeff or Bill. I do know Ron was my least favorite, but he wasn't bad. How many bills do you pay online? I'm a 23-year-old "adult" who doesn't have bills. I can't even TELL you the last time this bitch ran. At school was is/was the main reason you get/got in trouble? It was never severe trouble, just a quick word, but Jason because we'd always hug and usually just exchange a peck in-between going to classes; both were no-nos in our shit school, and the hall monitors or whatever would tell us not to if they saw, buuut we didn't listen. Hell, I think maybe hand-holding was against the rules too, which I know we didn't abide by if that was present. Do you make your views heard or do you hide in the background? It depends. I'd say heard more often, maybe? Do you have many friends from foreign countries? No. Can you open your mouth very wide? No. You know those things at the dentist where you have to bite down straight onto them for an impression of your molars? What was the reason for your last x-ray? My knees were being checked with all the horrible pain I'd been dealing with from them. Did you have a rebellious phase growing up? beyond-far-horizons
This is awesome and because *hangs head in shame* I dont play the games (i'm a noob with no money and my parents never let me have video games so I just like the story okay?) I have never seen this bit.
I ADORE multiverse/underworld stuff as you know or perhaps you don't as I don't know how far I got explaining Aeq and Midnight Palace but it is FULL of that stuff. I love the symbolism and it is very Jungian (I am the Priest of Jung okay, welcome to the New Testament of Jess!) But I need to sleep rn so we can get to it later.
Thank you for showing me because then I can reference it if I have time but I have so many other things going on right now and dunno I love fanfic and these stories but then I get down because I get virtually no response and I need that interaction to continue. It is my luck to always like dead fandoms with minor prequel characters I guess...still I do feel the fanfic has improved my writing and vice versa
I was thinking alot about hell and demons and what 'heaven' would be as I had a very detailed review on FF.net asking me all this questions, like why Sparda would long for the light if he is a demon and dunno, it always comes back to my pet theories of light and dark and the union of opposites. Sparda is so interesting because I feel he came to 'justice' on his own but probably also cemented by this mysterious priestess who he had to sacrifice. At least that is the way
the way I would go if I was developing the lore or a prequel game. It seems the most juicy option. Anyways this 'light' ties into my feelings about the transcendent, this higher power/reality urging all to grow and develop. I guess I would see demons as base and vicious aspects of reality and sources of wild and violent energy - very much as both Jung and early cultures saw them or primal gods or 'titans'.
It's also why I have a headcanon Sparda a)is fascinated by humans - they have the same struggles as him and b)he has a huge library on religions of the world, history, philosophy and science because he is still trying to discover the nature of reality just like Eva and this is what really brings them together.  I wrote this line last night when Eva looks at all the books 'So you devour our souls metaphorically instead of physically now?'
I debated on making Sparda saintly, like he has already has his struggle and is now secure in himself but that isn't interesting to me plus you know our shared love of fighting with the feral nature to ultimately make the person better. Plus I kinda like the romantic angst that way like with MadaMito hehe
Okay I need to go to bed now.
Ok, prepare for huge contrived reply incoming...
First of all. What??
I hate when parents do this. I’m so sorry, I never knew about it... I really hate this.
Video games are just another media, I never understood why people would pick on that and forbid their child from having some fun. FFS.
If you want to play something some day I’ll always be there to help you installing, finding them, etc.. whatever you might need. Or even just finding anything related to games, etc.. I don’t play much these days as you know the multiple reasons but it was such an important part of my life I can barely imagine being cut out from this, even thought we always had old consoles this was very important.
About Sparda and the fic. I need to be sincere and say I’m taking so long to reply for two reasons. First because I LOVE the way you wrote Sparda but I was afraid of being too simplistic with my reply so I delved a lot on things...
But... tah-dah : I lost the huge reply I had wrote before. My note has 0 battery so its glued to the wall and it just turns off sometimes suddenly and I’m dumb and don’t save things so yeah. I kinda lost myself and got angry about that.
Anyway, I understand what you said here, especially your feelings about the fic, in many ways I can see how my fandom views reflect in the original world I’m making, and the inverse is contrary. There are many parallels. It really helps and fandom work is as worthy as original, imo, I’ve been thinking about this. Our obsession with prequels and obscure characters has a reason and that is exactly because we want to explore what is hidden behind the veil... exploring the possibilities.
Sometimes it comes to shipping speculation, and this too has a reason.
Thinking about your views on Sparda and Eva, I thought a lot on what it truly means to write or develop an obscure ship and why we are so interested in that (think about that, many of our common favorite characters from prequels, etc..)
I came to the conclusion that in Eva/Sparda just like in many of our other ships, has the common theme of the heroin facing her ‘dark reflection’, her ‘animus’ as Jung would say (OH BOY I’m entering that with you), and she, at first rejects it like she reflects her own darker aspects, her unconscious… its abhorrent for her so she seeks to destroy it as rapidly as possible as seen by Eva’s renewed determination after learning Sparda’s true nature in chapter 1. The animus represents her doubts and unconscious... However what we see in your story is much more interesting.
Most stories of this kind focus solely in the female aspect changing from her interactions with the male, who is already developed, but here we have Eva being able to re-awaken some viciousness in Sparda when it seems he has been quite restrained from quite some time (centuries) but also, something that is much more interesting.. it calls to his own determination and his own personal story and sacrifice, for some reason his ‘lust’ and brush with the dark side makes it all more important and more powerful than if he simply had been saintly at that point, like you said. It makes he revisit it all and ponder.
I love how you added lines of ‘temptation’ from Mundus, part of Sparda seeks to surrender to his ‘nature’ as its just so easy, like slip in a pair of old shoes... while the priestess memory, albeit silently, fights it and reminds him of his struggle and his ideals and ultimately her sacrifice which was also his own sacrifice (of his old ways). I think his darker side has been neglected and I think you will use this to develop Sparda into greater heights. Its great we get to see this in the actual story and he is not perfect, but he certainly is incredible.
Also, just as a side-note I loved how you described his hunger as mostly non-carnal as he glimpses her spirit and its light... when we see Sparda’s POV we get reminded every time of his non-human nature and his non-human perception of things which is clearly different. A demon’s prey is not flesh but spirit and this makes a lot of sense and a lot of potential.
To sum it up, you snatched the best of both worlds and is about to develop both characters under a relationship, as they have a lot to learn and gain from each other. I think this is the way your narrative is going, more or less.
These developments are unique aspects which I find extremely interesting and you are doing this in such a genial way and I can see already by the end of the latest chapter the strings of the themes I mentioned are pulled and ready to be followed.
So yeah, they’re in for a journey of development together. Neither of them starts the story as a ‘perfect’ entity either way... This was shown in a very nice way as you pointed out misconceptions regarding both sides involving the duo of protagonists.
“I was thinking alot about hell and demons and what 'heaven' would be as I had a very detailed review on FF.net asking me all this questions, like why Sparda would long for the light if he is a demon and dunno, it always comes back to my pet theories of light and dark and the union of opposites. Sparda is so interesting because I feel he came to 'justice' on his own but probably also cemented by this mysterious priestess who he had to sacrifice. At least that is the way I would go if I was developing the lore or a prequel game. It seems the most juicy option. I guess I would see demons as base and vicious aspects of reality and sources of wild and violent energy - very much as both Jung and early cultures saw them or primal gods or 'titans'.”
I abstained a bit from the conversation earlier as I feared my careless/godless (lmao) perception was too disturbing for you or anyone but I also pondered on concepts such as heaven and hell, salvation, damnation, etc.. when considering Sparda’s tale. I know DMC isn't Christianity but its imagery is somewhat based on Abrahamic religion/mythos so I’m bound to take in consideration some of my ideas regarding biblical mythology, as in...
When I started reading the bible so long ago it always puzzled me to imagine what exactly were angels/demons. I mean, are they even able to think in the same way as us?? Or are them more like ‘robots’, AI following orders (especially angels sometimes strikes me as that) and perhaps demons are those ‘robots’ that rebelled against their determined function, idk.
Something I wondered more than a decade ago was if demons in the bible are truly lost in every way so I started thinking within the dmc setting. I’m interested in that all and those things I mentioned. The interesting part is that I once asked that to my catechist if demons could be redeemed (lmao I was crazy, I know, but bored above all). She was at first very mad with me (she was always) but she reluctantly told me that demons had known god up close and felt his power so their sin in not following him is much bigger than a human’s, something of the sorts. So it sounded like they are also able to choose their way and I sort of apply this to dmc, lol. I’m weird, I know...
Are they capable or ‘worthy’ of forgiveness, because demons in dmc clearly have free will and thought like us, or at least similar to us. Some of them, like Sparda have clearly a lot of intellect, but like you said... others are very ‘primal’. Perhaps this is the key. The ‘evolved’ demon develops intellect and power... perhaps you are in the right track and it goes hand in hand? Does this make any sense?? The more powerful and developed they are, the more they develop ‘higher brain functions’ and star resembling a human more, idk because the lower demons in dmc are clearly more animal-like and primal while Sparda has a human-like shape and intellect.
I think I know where we are going and this looks like both angels and demons are actually a ‘reflection’ of human psyche. So, demons are the primal ancient aspects of the brain are somehow walking around hell just like that, while heaven and its inhabitants are mysterious. I really like the way you described hell and its inhabitants, it makes a lot of sense to imagine it as a part of human psyche embodied, in a way. I imagine Heaven as the exact inverse of Hell so it has its own creatures and they’re born from ‘order’ instead of chaos as stated above.
We have Bayonetta as a source of inspiration and I think its very valid to use that in order to understand Sparda. Heaven isn’t exactly good there, is it? In fact it appears like a very controlling environment.
Hell: Primal, violent, survival of the fittest anyone? Hell inhabitants embodied  the most basic aspects of the brain, as you said.
Heaven: It might stem from higher planes of thinking and represent the more ‘sublime’ or ‘newer’ aspects of the evolving mammal brain.
It might make an easy choice for heaven but also such tight atmosphere is bound to become stagnant, it is no longer permitting flaws and strong emotions (thus angels look apathetic af in Bayonetta).
It might seem at first glance that heaven is good, hell is bad, however I think, if you delve into heaven you might realize the beings born there might be too ‘disembodied’ as they represent exactly those parts of human psyche which are the most sublime. Let me explain, I always felt like too much spirituality tends to make people leave behind the reality of things, it might make them lack empathy for living beings who have to commit difficult decisions on a living basis, basic survival, starvation, the struggle for life, etc..
Think about enlightenment and Bodhisattva, also the rituals of mortification which are legit scary and reminds me of this concept as only those who leave behind all that is ‘mortal’ and are detached to an extreme, can reach Nirvana. I know this has not much to do with Christianity but even in this religion we find analogous associations regarding detachment as divine and saintly. Its also harmful in a way, or am I reaching? While too much focus on the primal/carnal leads to obvious horrible things: vice and chaos; too much detachment leads to apathy.
I do think some level of detachment is necessary to reach happiness but too much of it makes people forget the reality of life and makes them not able to relate anymore to the ones around them, as the focus becomes solely spiritual it kind of deafens them to the ‘real world’ and ignore it.
This is all about reaching a balance as its is our favorite theme, too much light is bad, too much darkness is bad, etc.. or else the story would fall into itself as the reality of the three settings (heaven, hell, earth) would be rigid.
So here we have a darker aspect of heaven, imo, to balance things out.
Heaven is clearly ‘order’ and hell is ‘chaos’ so we might as well find a balance... our favorite theme as always. The fact that one being like Sparda, born amidst ultimate chaos would gaze upward in delight and desire something else doesn't surprise me. The fact is he could be bitter about it, you even gave away the line on your fic where Sparda mentions he has been denied ‘light’. I wonder what exactly that means and this is one of my favorite aspects of your Sparda is that he is aware of his condition and even thought he worked against it its still lingering to him.. like his own flickering appearance.
But he hasn’t made his way up to heaven, huh?
So its not a far reach to believe in it (that he desired ‘light’, whatever it is) but my personal belief is that too much ‘light’ is not good either and Sparda realized the beauty in flawed humanity, which sits right in the middle of light and darkness, order and chaos... that’s why he became enamored by the concept of humanity and all the struggle our own condition imposes upon us.
For me this is an archetypal theme.
Just food for thought.
The matter is... how? What exactly awakened him to justice?
This makes stuff much more interesting. This was a huge ramble, I know but I needed to develop this and see if it works,
It's also why I have a headcanon Sparda a)is fascinated by humans - they have the same struggles as him and b)he has a huge library on religions of the world, history, philosophy and science because he is still trying to discover the nature of reality just like Eva and this is what really brings them together.  I wrote this line last night when Eva looks at all the books 'So you devour our souls metaphorically instead of physically now?'
So yeah, about a) I’m totally with you and I can see why Sparda would empathize with humans, as I talked earlier and I think my explanation on why Sparda would be fascinated by humans instead of ‘angels’ is made up above and I hope this doesn't sound too weird, just my line of thought.
As a demon, he’s born from a very ‘imperfect’ reality. He knows how shitty things can be... Now I really wonder how his life was before he ‘awakened to justice’ he must have witnessed some remarkably horrible things in his life..
Under the setting I mentioned, it would be I think its kinda easier for a demon to do this since angels would be too stuck up in their haven, idk so this is how Sparda, the unlikely hero is the first of these beings to take arms and defend humanity. Sparda is so special as he was the one to side with humans by his own decision and free will. What a guy!
I debated on making Sparda saintly, like he has already has his struggle and is now secure in himself but that isn't interesting to me plus you know our shared love of fighting with the feral nature to ultimately make the person better. Plus I kinda like the romantic angst that way like with MadaMito hehe
I’m glad you didn't! This is probably a gradual process even thought they say he ‘awakened to justice’ which makes it seem like he suddenly just did so I believe he had brewing feelings from his life as a demon in hell...
He must have been such an unique individual to perceive truths his peers where not ready to learn and truly, an act of rebellion against the system itself coming from someone who is ‘supposed’ to do only harm is really something we want to see on screen and I’m so glad you didn't simplify it as being a single event in his life.
I’m really in love with this theme because it shows these beings are able to change their own destinies, even someone with such dark origins.

Noah Film Analysis Paper- Comparing two Different Plots of the Same Biblical Story
Both Evan Almighty (2006) and Noah (2014) depict the biblical story of a man called to build an ark. However, the plot of Noah is more violent and filled with brutality while Evan Almighty is more humorous and light-hearted resulting in slightly different themes and messages between the two movies. Noah is based on a violent story. In the Biblical account it says, “Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out.” (The New Oxford Annotated Version, Genesis 7:23). What can be understood is that the world that was then, the world of Noah, was incredibly corrupt. Genesis 6:6 tells us that “the Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.” The depraved actions of mankind grieved God in His most holy heart. God responded to man’s sin in a holy and righteous manner, but also in a way that salvaged mankind. “So the lord said, ‘I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.’ But Noah found favor in the eyes of the lord” (Genesis 6:7–8). Yes, all people on earth died except the eight people who were found righteous in the eyes of God: Noah, Noah’s wife, and Noah’s three sons and their wives.
In the movie Noah, every frame, every angle, every shift speaks to the able hands of director, Darren Aronofsky. Darren Aronofsky uses multiple close up shots with dramatic music playing in the background to emphasize the importance of Noah. He also uses lighting to show how the movie is a dark and gloomy version of the Biblical tale. As a young boy, Noah witnesses his father, Lamech, killed by a young Tubal-cain, this results in a lot of hate built up inside Noah against Tubal-cain and will lead to violence later in the movie. Noah is tortured by his visions, not always at peace with the mission God sends his way. The film portrayed the visions beautifully. He used very strong imagery, which is elegantly and almost poetically edited. The director uses fade- ins and fade- outs to show his visions, for example in the scene when Noah saw the heavy rains, there was a fade-in used from above to below to show how the water had risen several feet. In this movie Noah is filled with catastrophe. Noah builds an ark for his family and all the animals on the earth, the skies rain down from the heavens; drowning nearly everything, and humans are nearly feral as they battle each other for survival (Alleva). The director uses low angle shots to show the destruction of houses, cars and everything on land during the flood scene. The director also uses multiple bird’s eye view shots showing the flood and how everything is slowly being covered by the water. This shot makes the viewer feel godlike and I think that was the intent of the director as the flood is sent down by God. As the rain starts pouring the Watchers fight off Tubal-cain and his mob of followers, sacrificing themselves and ascending to heaven, their reward for protecting Noah. As the flood drowns the remaining humans, an injured Tubal-cain climbs onto the ark, he is later killed when he tries to kill Noah. There's plenty of brutality and gore: mountains of dead bodies are shown, sometimes using close up shots, humans beat each other to death, sometimes with rocks, spears and knives. There is one part where the "evil" people tear apart an animal with their bare hands and eat it. It happens so fast that there are animal parts flying and blood splattering. There's plenty of bloody fighting and death - not to mention the mass drowning - but it's all purposeful rather than gratuitous. Although, each death is sad and people suffer a great deal. At the beginning, middle and end of the movie, Darren Aronofsky uses establishing shots to show us what the setting looked like before, during and after the flood. I don't mind violence in films when the consequences are realistically portrayed, and that's mostly true in this movie.
Wickedness in general, man’s inhumanity to man and impiety against God are all themes in the film, along with environmental themes. The environmental theme is depicted from the very beginning of the movie. Noah’s first words in the film are to his son Ham, correcting him for picking a tiny flower because it’s pretty. Noah explains that all living things have a purpose, and men should take only what they need and can use (Aronofsky). Noah, played by an authoritative Russell Crowe, is the hero, but that doesn’t make him saintly, he is portrayed as harsh, ruthless but in the end merciful. We see the theme of mercy during the end scenes of the film when Noah spares the two twin baby girls. Instead of killing them with his knife he kisses their foreheads and in that moment he talks about how his heart was filled only with love. He could not possibly bring himself to kill them and this was a very important choice he made in the movie (Aronofsky).
Evan Almighty is a humorous movie aimed to appeal to the whole family. There's no violence, drinking, or sex, and virtually no bad language. The plot revolves around Evan talking directly to God and then obeying his commands (Shadyac). The director of this film,Tom Shadyac, uses a number of shots taken from Noah's vantage point making the viewers feel like they’re part of the conversation with god. In the movie Noah, Noah never talked directly to God. The laughs, from Evan Almighty, are what you'd expect: lots of species and feces jokes, an overlong montage of Evan hurting himself while building the ark, and endless digs at Evan's appearance, which goes from clean-cut to grizzly man to white-bearded prophet in just a few scenes ( “Evan Almighty”). The main theme in the movie was family. Even though Evan’s family didn’t know exactly what was going on with him, they stuck by him and loved him. His family stood by his side even when everyone thought he was completely insane, they even helped him build the ark. His kids were just happy to finally be spending time with him. Another difference between Evan Almighty and Noah is the source of the floodwaters. Evan Almighty uses the breaching of a nearby dam as the source for the powerful local flood, whereas in the movie Noah, it starts raining and water starts sprouting out of the ground. The cause of the floodwater from the dam results in Evan Almighty having quite a different message. It shows that when you cut corners, don’t obey laws and aren’t honest there are repercussions, which makes sense as this film is intended for a younger audience and can teach them morals through this biblical story.
Evan Almighty’s themes are about people ‘believing in each other’ and ‘standing by one another’. In Noah the devastating global flood was sent to punish mankind for their willful rebellion against their creator, the world was filled with terrible wickedness and violence.
The plot differences in Evan Almighty and Noah result in different themes such as: family, mercy, and environmental themes, which translate into different overall messages. They both showcase some good work on characters, visuals, camera angles and lighting, making it a movie which stands out among other movies with similar themes. I would rate Evan Almighty a 7/10 and would recommend it to younger kids as it  displays the biblical story in a comedic way and has a good family friendly message. I would rate Noah an 8/10 as it made the biblical story come to life more accurately. I recommend this movie to slightly older people as it has a considerable amount of violence, brutality and a morally complex core.
Writing this film analysis paper was something I found quite difficult. It’s something I’ve never done before and so it took me quite a while to write and make it something I was proud of. Whenever I watch movies, I never think about all the things that go into making the movie excellent. Doing this paper helped me notice all the details that go into making just one scene of a movie. The different camera shots and angles, the lighting, the music and the set are some examples of things that I’ve never focused on before but from now on I definitely will. My writing process included taking multiple breaks in between, re-watching scenes from both movies on youtube, going through the basic film terms so I knew what I was writing made sense, and a considerable amount of time spent just staring at my computer screen. Through this whole writing process, I do feel more confident with citations and I feel like I have learned a lot more than I thought I would going into this. Yes, I did find it challenging but at the end of the day finishing it gave me a sense of accomplishment.

LORD OF THE FLIES
SUMMARY:
-School boys lost on an island during the war descend into chaos
 –Rich symbolism
 –Clear styles
 –Varied characters
 –Well known piece of literature
 –Studied at school
When briefed on a project about creating a cover for a book, I tried to think of literature which had a rich and varied visual language to play with. Not knowing any of the suggested books very well, I opted for Lord of the Flies.  I knew it would have a primal, tribal feel to go with the setting of the book and I thought this would be interesting to try on the cover. It is also a well know book so I could have a good library of example material as a starting and reference point.
Personally, I studied the book in GCSE English and recalled the interesting narrative as a platform for deeper themes of chaos, power and civilisation. The author, William Goulding, taught at my school (Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School) around the time of writing the book, so I also feel I have an insight into the mental space and environment which inspired this book. Goulding is known for giving the boys parts of his work to study to help him write. Furthermore, LotF is based on school boys which he would have seen at my school (a long time before I was there!)
I thought the book would be an obvious and necessary starting point. So I formed my own summary, character and symbol descriptions.
PLOT
During a time of war, British schoolboys are stranded on a tropical island following a plane crash. The dead pilot leaving them with no adult guidance, they first try to recreate the culture they left behind, electing Ralph to lead, with the intellectual Piggy as secondary. But Jack, starting as leader of the hunt, wants power, too, and gradually lures the boys from civility and reason to the savagery of hunters. William Golding gives us a glimpse of the savagery that underlies even the most civilized human beings as the boys struggle to find a way of living in a community with no fixed boundaries. Goulding invites readers to evaluate the concepts involved in social and political norms and moral ideals. As well as community, leadership, and rule/law the viewer is invited to question ideas of power and what it means, who should have it, and what are its consequences?
THEMES
Biblical undertones - eg. Simon comparable to Jesus: comes in as the moral, virtuous character and is killed by the savage group
Civilisation vs Savagery
Loss of innocence
Piggy’s spectacles - science and rationality
Fire - boy’s link to civilisation, as it dies out, so does their civility
Conch shell - Political order and democracy, at the start whoever holds it can speak to the group
The Beast - Invisible threat that they all fear, symbolises their primal instincts, as their fear for the beast grows they become more primal and savage eg. leaving sacrifices.
CHARACTERS
Ralph -  protagonist; elected leader of the group; tries to organise the boys; tries to build a civilisation; represents man’s civilizing instinct, as opposed to the savage instinct of Jack.
Jack -  antagonist; older boy; becomes the leader of the hunters; longs for total power; becomes increasingly feral and brutal; manipulative; represents man’s primal, barbaric instincts, as opposed to the civilising drives Ralph represents.
Simon - Shy; sensitive; in some ways the only naturally “good”; kind to younger boys; willing to work for good of community; connectedness to nature so only character whose morality not seemingly imposed by society; represents a kind of natural goodness, opposed to evil of Jack and the forced morality and civility represented by Ralph and Piggy’s side. Role compared to Jesus by critics.
Piggy -  Ralph’s right hand man; whiny; intellectual; Piggy’s inventiveness frequently leads to innovation eg. makeshift sundial that the boys use to tell time; represents the scientific, rational side of civilisation; glasses are used as fire, Piggy is very dependant on the glasses to see; they break later in the novel, symbolically leaving Piggy without sight and the group without fire.
Roger -  Jack’s “lieutenant.”; sadistic; cruel; older boy; brutalizes the littluns; murders Piggy with a large boulder from above.
Sam and Eric -  Twins; closely allied with Ralph; always together; the other boys often treat them as a single entity, calling them “Samneric.”; part of the group known as the “big guns.”; towards the end of the book, they come under  Jack’s influence and coercion.
The Lord of the Flies -  Sow’s (female boar) head that Jack’s gang displays on a staff in the forest; offering to the “beast.”; comes to represent the untamed drives of power and cruelty that take over Jack’s group.
