my fucked up way of making s2 ep7 work without changing the way fizz acts:

make it so that mammon made fizzarolis robo limbs, instead of ozzie.

fizzarolis prothestics made by mammon could work like an apple phone: they work slower over time and after a year, they need to be replaced. and every year, after the competition, fizzes prize for winning mammons clown pageant is a new pair of robo limbs. his payment is basically a necessity thats treated like a privilege by mammon. its obvious to anyone who finds out (like blitz and ozzie) that whats going on is REALLY fucked up.

itd justify all fizzes anxiety in the episode. you could even keep the line of fizz saying to oz "mammon gave me this life. he gave me security, wealth, and i wouldn't be here without him", and itd be all the more bittersweet.. because to an extent, itd be true. fizz probably thought his career, his LIFE was over when he lost his limbs, and mammon couldve been a light in his darkest moment, being kind for a brief moment, just to manipulate him for the rest of his career to make up for that one act of kindness.

in this rewritten version, fizz won't let oz make him new prothestics. he tells oz that his prothestics were given to him by someone "special and important to him", but never says who. since oz said "not my story to tell," i think oz would 100% respect this boundary.

.. until he finds out WHO has been gifting fizz these limbs. maybe he finds a trash can full of unusable, unsafe mammon made limbs under the pile of fizz merch in his dressing room. maybe oz is angry at fizz for lying to him for nearly a decade, until fizz explains thru tears that he cant lose the ability to move like he used to before the accident, and he HAS to do this. because yeah! of course hed feel that way! oz offers to make him a new set of limbs again, without wanting anything from fizz.

the episode could stay almost exactly the same with these changes. the only thing id changed after crooked is to have ozzie ACTUALLY hit mammon, at least once. id make it play out like that one scene from south park, where kyle slaps cartman ONCE, and cartman starts wailing for his mom. replace kyle with ozzie, and cartman with mammon, and itd play out perfectly. i just really like fanart where mammon cries tbh

you could even keep blitz (who isnt 100% necessary to the plot despite his connection to fizz), and the twins, creepzo, oliver, and theyd feel a lot less useless with higher stakes relating to fizzes disability/abilities to perform.

this episode always felt really weak to me on a first viewing and rewriting it made me figure out why. the stakes are REALLY low, compared to how the episode (and fizz) insists that theres so much on the line to lose. fizz was always going to be ok if he quit working for mammon since he has ozzie, and that fact is painfully obvious to the audience and blitz. it crushes all the believability of fizz acting like he does in the actual episode.

i saw some of your posts about being anti-cassie's dad protag for HW2, which valid, but the theory's become so popular most people seem to accept it. HW2 is kind of a mess to theorize about what the string of events was considering both endings could easily be canon, but I guess I'll get to the point. I'm sure most people have heard plenty of theories about what happens in the game if it's Cassie's Dad as the protagonist, so I'm curious. If you don't think it's him, who do you think is most likely? And (while this is difficult to figure out with any protag..) what do you think is supposed to be happening throughout the game, like, timeline-wise/plot-wise? Personally I feel like Cassie's Dad protag is possible, but I don't think it's set in stone or that he would be a reoccuring character. Imo Cassie's Dad protag works best if he stays a one-off character, building onto Cassie's backstory. I kinda wonder if the "what makes you so special?" lines aren't actually saying he's special, but asking what he thinks makes him special enough to go through all this and survive. Still I'm really curious to hear alternatives! I'm definitely not attatched to that theory lol. I just haven't really heard anything else tbh since the theory's so big in the fandom..

theres tons of evidence (a lot of it already used for cassie dad protag evidence) that apply to Cassie protag. for starters hw2 is obviously incredibly reminiscent of hw1 with its ending. vanny traps you somewhere and waves, the same way glitchtrap trapped you somewhere and waved in hw1s canon ending.

it's been widely accepted that vanny cassie is very possible and the direction the story is going in so playing as cassie in the lobby and going through princess quest and helping vanny and it being implied Vannys using the player as a vessel now the same way glitchtrap used vanessa to create vanny makes it very plausible we play as cassie

theres also the 'unused' line (but they all perfectly apply to the game as it is right now and add much needed context that make the game actually make sense) that's from presumably vanny, saying: "it kept you for a reason"

not only does the it pronoun 100% mean the mimic (and cassie is still down there in the same place where the mimic is literally free rn but alive) but it means that the mimic purposefully didnt kill cassie and also probably was the one to drop the evelator because it has a plan for her. aka the plan is getting vanny a new vessel so mimic can resume operations

the lobby itself also perfectly matches post ruin. you have the vanni mask on first of all, but second of all theres little items around the lobby that hint that you're cassie. like the robot parts strewn around that could imply cassie is trying to repair roxy (theres also the helpy screen)

as for "what makes you so special" I think people are misinterpreting the cassie ending as it being Cassies dad and not a staffbot. it literally shows you straight up that you get attacked by other staffbots and made into maskbot and give cassie the mask. if anything it shows us that Cassies arrival was planned and it's more evidence that we play as her becoming vanny. but its ALSO a perfect explanation for how confusing the minigames are in telling us who we play as

we literally play as a staffbot/mapbot. the minigames go from clean and fixed animatronics to gradually getting worse. even when the pizzaplex is clean and the animatronics are just a bit dirty, we've only seen that in sb. we play as a staffbot from pre sb, during sb, and post sb. "what makes you so special" what makes you so special compared to the other staffbots

it also explains why the animatronics are mean to you. staffbots are seen as useless hunks of junk and its shown all across the pizzaplex and in ruin as well when they're constantly shown discarded and destroyed.

freddy also says the line "you ARE a Fazbear technician, arent you? idk bc I can't see you". it means we literally arent a Fazbear technician. were a staffbot. and the same applies for carnies line about kids. its prerecorded and we're just a robot anyway

I have more posts about all this stuff individually but more in depth in my hw2 theory tag. this is what I genuinely think and I believe cassie is the protag for sure. it just feels so clear with how reminiscent hw2 is of hw1s ending tied with the clear plot of vanny cassie it's just like. why would we play as her dad when we watch ourselves get trapped by vanny the same way vanessa did right in front of our eyes.

we have the cassie ending because it shows us how maskbot got the mask and where it came from. it came from glitchtrap + by extension the mimic and vanny. vanny betrays glitchtrap at the end but also traps cassie in the process. the elevator dropped on cassie in ruin because the mimic did it on purpose to enact this plan. I think hw2 is more straightforward than ppl realize if you put everything together from what we have and dont try your hardest to put other characters in when the game is definitely about vanny cassie

like hw2 and ruin were made at the same time. they go hand in hand and reference eachother in the game, even before one of them was even out. the story is about cassie becoming vanny, the whole thing. this game is an intermission (the song scorched cranberries (the end credits song) is elevator music) showing us how the new villain/character thatll be big in the next plot was created. this is about cassie

maybe her dad will have the spotlight in hw2s dlc. idk. he has something going on but nothing in hw2 I dont think.

additional: went off topic with the hair question a bit. their bright hair is all part of the transformations. regular hair dye does exist though. best way to tell is that if the eyebrow matches the hair its probably not dyed. also, quartz’s hair is naturally ginger.

also was gonna keep this in the tags but thought i might as well actually try to answer it: the question i found it hardest to answer was someone the song one. my taste in music is. a mess really. ive been listening to like the same 5 songs on repeat all day. more under the cut because i was rambling again and now its uhhh half 1am

if it helps at the time of answering that specific question i had home by cavetown on repeat, and that song reminds me of both rami and lewis. but that may be because i project onto those two a lot, and as a aro trans dude. who sucks with people skills, yeah of course i love that song.

specifically the vibes of like not knowing how to communicate (rami is fine with his friends but other people are different), the lines “ Turn off your porcelain face, I can't really think right now and this place, Has too many colors, enough to drive all of us insane” idk what the porcelain face line is supposed to mean but im picturing it as like. a mask. that you need to take off and stop hiding and rami does tend to hide when hes feeling upset, and the next two lines kinda could tie into that, like the feeling of when youre overwhelemed and just want the world to stop so you just hide somewhere. also the colours could go with chapter 3 with the chromatic abberation.

also the bit with “ my eyes went dark, I don't know where, my pupils are, But I'll figure out a way to get us out of here” just kinda sums up ramis whole hero thing with his powers and all. anyway this has turned into less what songs rami would like and why this particular song reminds me of him and lewis (lewis specifically has the hair cutting/chest hiding, [big transmasc mood], and also messy haired trainwreck who doesnt know who he is yet. also the ghosts bit)

i did end up picking upbeat songs because ramis a dude who like to try and be upbeat even if things arent. even if hes not really feeling it he will pretend to.

Only a small number of the population are supers! the chances are higher in more populated cities, but unusally london has oneof the higher percentages of supers. while nobody in universe has any idea of the origins of superpowers, it does seem that powers are more likely to occur in people who would actually use their powers.

as for what powers are most common, after making a badly catagorized spreadsheet of every superpowered character ive made for this world (70% of which will probably never even be seen), turns out that elemental powers are the most common. although not all elemental powers manifest as the straight up 'controling this element' as seen in characters like lin or tsunami. for example, iris's powers would fall under shadow elemntal powers, but theyre a lot more weird that just controlling shadows.there are some abilities that have never been seen before,such as ressurection or full on time travel (aka anything that could bring a character back to life), but powers are certainly allowed to toe the line eg healing, powers involving undeath, immortality, pausing or manipulating time.

aside from that, anything goes. you could get plain old superstrength, but you could also get the ability to create dogs with your mind. other not quite rules, more guidelines are that supers are immune to their own powers hurting them (unless they were pushing themselves too hard), although the way the imminuties occur may be inconvinient to the super.

while some powers may be 'more powerful' than others, powers dont really get to be way underpowered or overpowered in comparision to others. sure being able to talk to animals may feel a bit useless compared to someone who can lift 4 tanks at once, but nobodys going to end up with a power like 'can turn into a goose but only once' or 'can grow toenails twice as fast' or 'if i sneeze i can change my hair colour'. at the same time, youre not going to get someone with the power to snap their fingers and level a city, or instantly blow up the moon or whatever.

My non-romantic OTP for this characteri love the familial bonds between all the nohrian siblings but so far leo and elise is my fave sibling duo,,, but im biased bc so far ive only gotten theirs and camilla/xander’s lol. but even in hoshido i like the younger sibs plus older sibs duos. the idea of closeness in age forming a special bond is cute to me. i also like corrin and leo as having a close sib bond since they seem close in age! i know theres [remembers graveyard chapter of birthright again and starts sobbing] some underlying angst of him envying all the doting on corrin his siblings do and he feels ALONE AND I CRY, but he also was very fond of corrin, and i remember the end of birthright where camilla totally calls him out saying how he was saying how nice it was to get to see corrin again ;w; i’d like to think they were close!and of course i like leo and camilla’s relationship…. thinks about end of birthright and sobs… at least they have each other ;o;i need to get more leo supports actually… i want to see every support convo but theres only so much time CRIES

22. sedated: this song is solid, but sort of plain. makes you nod your head along but no dancing or mouthing along. it sort of feels like an amalgam of every hozier song. doesn’t slap. its the c- of hozier songs

21. someone new: cute, but sort of like a middle song in a wedding. nobody really talks about it for a reason. makes you smile, but not very catchy

20. run: its haunting, but not a cool kind of haunting, more just gives you the creeps. the chorus is pretty good though, and the lyrics seem like something you’d hear in poetry, so it’s better than the other two

19. moment’s silence (common tongue): this is the first song on this list that is legitimately catchy. its a song you turn up on the radio, but not by much. its fun, its bluesy, got some catholic imagery. its good, but its not “wow!” good. c maybe c+

18. better love: this was written in a month, and it feels rushed. a bit too fast, and if hozier had more time, im convinced he would have slowed it down. its the first powerful, devotional, love song on the list. i’ve heard people don’t like the drums, but im convinced its the extra singers and violin in the background. im always a violin advocate, but you’ve gotta pick like two instruments andrew. its crowded, but its got that power so its higher than say, sedated

17. from eden: i know everybody loves this, and i agree its pretty good, but i think the song could’ve used some more haunting parts? way extra points for the bridge after the third verse, thats super cool. i’d give it a b

16. nfwmb: i legitimately really like this song. it hits all the points, haunting, devotional love, necromancy, comparing your partner to nature, low bass. its a great low and sort of dirty song that could have used some higher string instruments. theres nothing wrong with this song in particular, i just like the others better. again, a b

15. movement: idk how y’all feel about this one, its his newest, but its one of his building songs. the atmosphere is different, and the lyrics are sub-par for hozier, but something about it just goes so hard. b+

14. take me to church: this was his first hit, and we’re all tired of it by now, but giving it a listen again, if not for the overplayedness, it would be more like a 6 or 5, not 14. a solid jam. gets bumped over movement for pagan imagery

13. jackie and wilson: someone new if it slapped. super relatable and arguably more lesbian than from eden, which i will argue. i mean, seeing a woman across the bar and immediately imagining your future kids and house? and getting so caught up in it you don’t notice when she leaves? big dyke mood, also super fun and catchy. feels like spring cottage cleaning watching cartoons on a saturday morning. b+

12. arsonists lullaby: this song starts of as innocuous and gets darker. really feel the fire and brimstone and rage and power of idk. mental illness? pyromancy? anyway it makes you want to dance naked around the bonfire, like in that scene at the end of the witch. one of the few powerful dark hozier songs with a snare drum beat, our first a-

11. shrike: its bittersweet ending of a relationship, and he conveys the pain and love perfectly, and the irish accent is the best. feels like a song at the end of a movie when two people who maybe could have made it break up, and maybe one dies in a war or something. its beautiful and lonely, and vocals are really great on this one

So I was in an accident last week. It was a minor fender bender and was my first accident in the 9 years of driving I've had. Dialogue reference

As I have stated, this project is about trying out new techniques and new ideas within my creative practice. One of these techniques I want to try is the recording of dialogue and sound for film. It crossed my mind to just do a musical soundtrack to accompany the visuals but I think a more effective way of firmly getting the ideas and context across would be to have a narrative element within the audio. The issue with just having the musical element is, you get the tonal changes in mood through key changes (major and minor reflecting happy and sad feelings) but it’s hard to convey a narrative within them, especially if - as I’m thinking - the videos are only quite short respectively. A dialogue element will much more effectively help convey the messages as we have both tonal aspects as well as content and words to help. 

My first reference for this inclusion of dialogue is the monologues and narration of ‘The Narrator’ in the film Fight Club. This film in itself is a film dealing with mental illness and depression that manifests in a split personality disorder.

This clip from the start of the film, is an impressive CGI rendering of a virtual IKEA catalogue highlighting the way in which the narrator’s life is run by the draw of capitalist, mass produced products in order to fit in with his idea of ideal society. Over top of the sweeping slider movement, tracking the character on the phone ordering more furniture, we hear the narration explaining his need for these products and how he justifies this compulsion.

It is this scene in particular that stands out for me, most specifically the last 5 seconds as the narrator lies apathetically staring at the TV informercials. The visuals combines with Edward Norton’s emotionless, droning voice really communicates the state of lifeless depression. The way he reads the dialogue is as though the words just fall out of his mouth, said with conviction but without emotion. You know in another life he is a smart and well spoken person, he just lacks the confidence to run with it. No joy is to be found in his monotone voice, even as he describes the furniture he supposedly loves, theres no emotion or spark to his voice that suggests he has any actual enthusiasm for his belongings. Spending money gets him superficial joy. 

The visual element of this scene too resonates with my experience of depression at it’s worst. You don’t laugh or cry, you just seam to exist waiting for something to happen, often in the middle of the night. So you sit and watch TV, but you’re not really watching it, you’re just staring at the changing colours and shapes, thinking. I want to homage this scene in my own work due to it’s (and it’s a rather cliche thing to say now about this film) importance in my life as a creative person. 

I first looked at poetry back when I was first considering my final project. My initial idea was to take a poem of a selection of poems and build a story from that in a more traditional form. Since then, I have moved from a more formulaic approach to a more art-film based idea, meaning that I needed to adopt the style of narrative I was going to write. For a more formulaic film, you can get away with being a bit more descriptive and use exposition to guide the audience. Thus, you can do more and move around in time more within the narrative. However, for a more art-film medium, you can be more expressional with the narrative but it also tends to lend itself to a more generalised one. I started by looking at popular social media/ forum site, Reddit. On Reddit you can find a ‘sub-Reddit’ for near enough every topic you could think of and so I went and found the ‘r/poetry’ sub. On here I posted this question: 

To which I got 17 replies of people recommending me different poems specifically and poets in general for me to have a look at. One of my favourite suggestions was Aubade by Phillip Larkin

I work all day, and get half-drunk at night.   Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.   In time the curtain-edges will grow light.   Till then I see what’s really always there:   Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,   Making all thought impossible but how   And where and when I shall myself die.   Arid interrogation: yet the dread Of dying, and being dead, Flashes afresh to hold and horrify. The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse   —The good not done, the love not given, time   Torn off unused—nor wretchedly because   An only life can take so long to climb Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never;   But at the total emptiness for ever, The sure extinction that we travel to And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,   Not to be anywhere, And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true. This is a special way of being afraid No trick dispels. This is a very cleaver and resonant depiction of what it’s like to deal with depression (from my experience) on a day to day basis. The thoughts that go through you’re head that become debilitating and issues that make the difference between simply being down and having depression. 

“Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,   Making all thought impossible but how   And where and when I shall myself die.   Arid interrogation: yet the dread Of dying, and being dead, Flashes afresh to hold and horrify.” 

This part of the first stanza is a great example of the early signs that I was pre disposed for this illness, from a very young age, I have feared death. What does it mean, when will it happen and how will it feel? I think these lines sum that up, the words “dread” and “being dead” on context bring up ideas of the mystery of the situation, the unknowing. Whereas “thought impossible” “interrogation” and “hold” sound very similar to the way in which these thoughts can become incapacitating. Often, you fixate on one thing and it causes any other thoughts to stop. This idea that I have about death was one of the original ideas I wanted to explore when coming into this project - the infinite scale of the universe and the subsequent meaningless feeling of our fleeting existence.

Again, these lines summaries that feeling of uselessness and meaningless.

“Postmen like doctors go from house to house.“

The final line is very powerful, it shows (to me) that this is a viewpoint that is held by many people, it’s the every-day person that feels these feelings and that you are not alone with them, which is a positive ending in my mind. The postman acting as the every man but then followed with “like doctors” show that even the people who deal with death are subject to this way of thinking too. 

As a dialogue for my film, it’s a very good starting point for me. However, if I am to have these three separate films, splitting up this poem for each part (bad days, normality, and good days) may not leave me with a long enough reading to work the visuals around. It may also not break up perfectly anyway. To really get the idea across that these are different points of view, the poetry needs to mirror these points of view. Overall, Aubade is a very somber poem with only small hints of positivity at the end. Instead I need to make a selection of poems for each shot that fits better with the desired length and mood. 

Voices - Nationwide

Voices is a marketing campaign from the mutual finance group, Nationwide. Nationwide have commissioned a series of short films depicting “real customers” reciting poetry and spoken word pieces about 21st century life. There’s a total of 16 adverts that run between 20 seconds and 2 minuets. The shorter videos obviously being more practical for T.V. advertisement and the longer videos suited to social media due to the cheep cost of marketing through the likes of Facebook and Twitter promotion. T.V. too has more regimented pre-existing formats to enable lots of adverts in a short amount of time where as social media (especially Facebook and Youtube) lends itself to longer videos. Once the viewer is interested in a product, they are more likely to watch the entire video, whereas on T.V. audiences would get bored.

The content of the videos is very simplistic in methodology, very simple documentary style filming in a montage style edit. The obvious ‘hand held footage’ shooting style and natural lighting (not obviously lit externally) sells the idea that these actors are every day people talking about the business. This in turn subconsciously says to  the audience that the people have sent in this footage themselves because they love the products they provide so much. 

The above video is one of my favourite from the series. The narrator in this case - Sugar J (again, use of informal names similar to how they would appear on a magazine write in column, sells the idea that these are every day people, not actors) - talks about the idea that technology, because of it’s inherent ease of use and connectivity, causes us to actually drift apart as a society. Sugar J proposes that we instead should see the ease of use as a means to connect on a real world basis. The spoken word in this project serves as a device to propose a deeper reading of the content. Because it’s not spelt out in simple terms, the audience have to think about what’s being said and what it means in relation to what’s trying to be sold. 

“...Sometimes, advertising is at its most effective when the hand of the client and agency can be least detected.” VCCP’s (Nationwide’s lead creative agency) deputy executive creative director, Jim Thornton says that he thinks the success of the project is because of it’s raw format, it’s simplistic nature and how it’s been taken back into the hands of the masses. However, when you look at the Youtube comment section, you see a different story, almost the opposite. People have taken to slandering the campaign for being blatant propaganda and soul-less. 

This is the tendency for internet and social media - youtube in particular - to dismiss something without properly understanding the background. A lot of people are dismayed thinking that Nationwide is a bank, whereas they are in fact a mutual finance so the profits of investors are put back into the company, not for the financial gain of the companies elite and outside investors. There’s also a dismissal from a certain proportion claiming that it’s pretentious and pompous. This is interesting when considering my own project as this could possibly be a reaction to my work too once I post it online. However, my work is being made for different purposes, as an art project not a commercial one. This will attract a different (and hopefully more open minded) audience and give context to the use of poetry. 

I think this campaign highlights (regardless of context and political agenda) the potential that spoken word and non linear dialogue methods hold in creating an engaging and thought provoking narrative. This is essential when creating more abstract or speculative work, and especially when discussing mental illness.
