 Shaking my head, I knew this would be another open-and-shut case that would be attributed to me, despite everyone knowing how little I needed to do here.  Getting credit I didn’t earn irked me.  Yes, I probably could have closed many of the cases without assistance, but I hadn’t.  Everyone knew it.  Luckily, most of them understood my feelings on the matter.

 These cases were attributed to me due to politics.  The force couldn’t openly acknowledge a vigilante’s aid, even one so well-liked as this one.  Since the arrival of Calamity in our city, crime rates had plummeted.  Convictions, on the other hand, had skyrocketed.  There was an abundance of evidence waiting for us wherever Calamity appeared with detailed instructions on how to corroborate the more questionable parts.  Learning how she managed to get so much information would be invaluable for police work worldwide, but sitting still for a chat wasn’t her style.  Of course, we were officially tasked with arresting her, though there was no pressure to try.

 Catching sight of someone out-of-place, I smiled and made my way over to him.  James Michael Somerset III was very likely to be behind our vigilante.  He was wealthy and incredibly well-connected for someone so young.  Weirder yet, I never found even a trace of dirty dealings involving his company, save for one report where a drug runner had attempted to use him as a patsy.  One run-in with James had led the man to confess everything, but that was months before Calamity came to town.

 “James Michael Somerset III.  Were you here for this one?” I questioned after he noticed me walking toward him.

 “No.  I just finished helping Mrs. Coleman with her painting back that way.” he replied, pointing back to where he had come from.

 “Hear anything new about Calamity?” I questioned with a smile, certain he had.

 “Calamity?” he asked, looking perfectly confused.

 I didn’t buy it.  Nodding, I said, “Oh yeah.  The city apparently has a vigilante using that as her name.  Strange choice if you ask me.”

 “I agree.  Sounds ominous.” he smoothly replied.

 “It does.  It does.  This is the second… no, third time you just happened to be walking by a crime scene after she appeared.” I pointed out, certain he could work out how strange that was.  Most police officers hadn’t even seen her that much.

 “She?  I thought this umm… Calamity, was it?” he asked, waiting for my nod.  “Was a he.”

 “No.  Calamity is definitely a she.  Hard to miss in that new suit she has.  White hair from what we’ve been told.” I explained, watching for any sign of the truth.

 “White hair?  Not a wig?” he asked, still sounding uncertain.

 I laughed and said, “Would you believe people claim to have seen part of her head shot off?  Well, not recently.  Lately, they’ve claimed she’s bulletproof.  Whatever the case, she has to have some expensive tech to survive some of the things she’s supposedly been through.”

 “I bet she would.” he acknowledged, looking as if he was considering the idea thoroughly.  Was he adding up the cost?

 “I also noticed that you have an employee with white hair.  Portentia, I believe her name was.  Unusual name.  Your website says she’s deaf though.” I prodded.

 “She was born deaf from what I was told.  Very friendly girl.  Would you like to meet her?” he offered.

 “I would.  I really would, but I’m afraid I can’t.  People might believe I’m investigating your business.” I explained, still wishing I knew what had transpired to make the brass so careful around James.

 “That might look bad if my business was associated with criminal activity, but I’ll gladly help law enforcement where I can.” he sincerely insisted.

 Letting the irony of the statement show on my face, I said, “Funny.  Would you believe I was called immediately by my boss’ boss right after I ran your plates that day we met?  He directly ordered me not to investigate you and informed me that investigating your business was considered investigating you.”

 “You’re a detective now, aren’t you?  Sorry.  I had been wondering why you weren’t in uniform.  Congratulations on the promotion.” he told me, sounding perfectly sincere again.

 “Thank you.” I told him, wondering if he had arranged that as well.  I felt I was on the verge of promotion before I had met James, but a word from him might’ve sealed the deal.  If that word had been given, why?  What would he gain?

 “Though I find what you just told me somewhat surprising, I can’t claim any knowledge as to why he would tell you that.” he assured me, interrupting my thoughts.  “Perhaps there could be some sort of international problem considering that a foreign dignitary resides in my home.”

 “Your fiancée.” I replied.  “Congratulations.”

 He didn’t seem remotely surprised that I knew, but he said, “Thank you.  For someone who isn’t investigating me, you’re very well informed.”

 I shrugged and reminded him “Your wedding is a big event.  I heard that the mayor and even the governor are going to be attending.”

 “I honestly haven’t seen the guest list, but I would imagine it’s quite extensive.” he admitted.

 “You obviously don’t have to answer, but do you know sign language, James?” I asked, unable to resist poking this bear.

 “Yes.  Several forms, actually.  With someone who is deaf working for me, I felt obligated to learn.  If you ever run into Portentia, don’t worry.  She can read lips just fine.  Make sure she’s facing you when you’re speaking though.  She has a tendency to turn her head when you’re saying something she doesn’t want to hear.” he explained, sounding amused at his employee’s antics.

 Nodding and holding out my hand, I said, “Sorry if I’m keeping you from anything, but I appreciate your time, Mr. Somerset.”  She was probably a great actress, capable of mimicking deafness perfectly.  There was no one who would back having a deaf girl tested for deafness, and Portentia’s life was a mystery, with almost no presence since she entered this country as an infant.

 He shook my hand with a smile.  “No trouble.  With an hour between jobs, I thought a nice walk would be a good way to kill some time.  I might have to call a taxi if I take too much longer.”

 “Would you want a ride?  I don’t have a DB5 like yours, but my car still runs.” I told him, knowing what was sitting on my passenger seat..

 “I wouldn’t want to trouble you.” he replied.

 “No trouble, not after I took up your time.  I’m the green one just up the street.” I insisted as I showed him the way.

 He followed, jokingly saying, “There are green taxis around.”

 I humored him with a smile, knocking loose some of the papers as I moved the folder.  “Let me get that out of your way.”

 No reaction at all, though I was certain he saw the picture of his employee in costume at a recent convention.  He simply explained where we were going, commenting on how he wished his client was more forthcoming about what he was to be doing.

 As we sat in silence, I reconsidered my approach.  I was certain James knew what his employee was doing, just as I was certain Portentia was Calamity.  I needed his help if I was going to get information on her investigative process.  Finally, I said, “Sorry if I might have seemed a little suspicious of your employee, James.  The Calamity thing is a bit of a thorn in our side.  She’s a criminal, breaking the law, we’re required to catch her, but she’s also busted a large number of cases open for us.  The amount of evidence left for us at some of the crime scenes is staggering.  Full videos of crimes in action on microSD cards sitting on top of pictures.  There are even printed reports at times connecting the dots easily enough for kindergarteners.”

 “That sounds incredible.  I’m a little concerned though.  If you do pin her down eventually, how are you supposed to bring her in if she’s capable of taking on large groups who don’t play by a rulebook?” he asked, the picture of concern.

 “Can I get your word that you won’t mention this?” I questioned, feeling confident that I could trust his given word.  Despite the strangeness of his connections and his incredible poker face, James was a good man.

 “Of course.  Confidentiality is in my contract.” he replied as if prepared to show me the contract.

 I laughed and said, “I can imagine, given the people you rub shoulders with.  No one even organizes the evidence we have on her.  It’s just a bunch of reports from witnesses.  She’s officially a myth, since few of the reports sound remotely credible.”

 “Even though she’s been seen multiple times?” he questioned in surprise.  “That sounds hard to believe.”

 “Fighting crime is tough.  Even the people we protect are against us half the time.  Having someone actually working to help us doesn’t make any of us too inclined to bring her in.” I confided.

 “So what are you after?” he asked curiously.

 I shrugged, deciding what to tell him.  Going for the straightforward route, I said, “I’d like to meet her and understand how she does it.  Collecting the evidence as she does might revolutionize police work.”

 He nodded, but didn’t comment.  Hopefully, he was considering what he could share.

 When we arrived without further exchange, I said, “Here we are.  I’ve got a new card if you want one, just in case you hear something.”

 “Sure.  Thanks for the ride!” he replied, taking the card.  Stepping out of the car, he pulled out his phone, probably checking for an update on his job.  Then he sighed, seeming annoyed by something.

 “Is something wrong?” I questioned, leaning down to look up at him through the passenger door.

 “Just looks like my day is going to be even busier.  Thanks again.”  he replied with a wave.  After quickly looking around, he stepped over to an open area where he could plainly be seen.  Seconds passed.  He glanced up, and I could hear the faint sound of a plane, which quickly grew to a loud roar.

 The last I saw of James, he looked annoyed as a giant cylinder closed around him.  Marvelous Max was in the city again, kidnapping one of our most esteemed residents.  Had James known she was coming?  Was this way he seemed annoyed?  What was the connection between them?  She was infamous, but mainly acted farther West.  Should I call this in?  I knew there would be consequences, since I was seen giving James a lift, but...

 A blur of red streaked by, jumping over my vehicle.  Calamity was already in pursuit just seconds after her boss was abducted.  I had no clue how she’d catch that flying mech of “Marvelous” Max, but I was less inclined to call this in.  Marvelous Max was known for casualties and collateral damage.  If my fellow officers attempted to support Calamity, we’d probably just be in the way.  Our helicopters weren’t equipped to deal with the type of firepower that mech used.

Introduce yourself! *Hi everyone! My name is Plueschkatze, which might be hard to say for anyone that’s not used to German, so feel free to call me Plue!

I started using RPGM in 2016, but I’ve been into game development since 2013. Last year I published two games and both have been products of teamwork for game jams. They are ‘The Beast Named Eliza’ and ‘Dear Edwin’.

What is your project about? What inspired you to create your game initially? *Plueschkatze: Ceress and Orea is about love. It’s a short game (about an hour) that follows Ceress, who is overcoming death to be reunited with her Love, Orea. It’s an adventure game, inspired by many of the amazing modern adventures/walking sims. You’ll traverse a cave system, which is basically a spirit realm. And yes, it’s about the love of two young women. Love itself is such a bittersweet experience, because it can mean happiness and pain all at once. I hope you can sense some of that bittersweetness within this game, but I wanted Ceress and Orea to be mainly a somewhat relaxing experience, that helps people to escape their stressful day for an hour. It has also given me the opportunity to grow as a game dev and tell one of the many, many stories that are in my head.

How long have you been working on your project? *Plueschkatze: I created the RPGM project folder in November 2017, and I’ve been developing CaO full time since January 2018. So I’d say CaO has been in development for about 4 months now.

Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Plueschkatze: Yes. Games like, Life is Strange, To the Moon, Telltale’s the Walking Dead, and many other modern adventure games and walking sims influenced what I want from games. They are the main reason I don’t have a combat system in my game, because it’s only telling a story. It’s more like taking a walk, than heavily action packed gameplay. Even titles like, The Last of Us, Fragile Dreams - Farewell to the Moon, Zelda Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild had an influence, at least to an extent, and the beauty of abandoned and overgrown places inspired a few of the maps. Though I wouldn’t compare CaO directly to any of these named games.

Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them? *Plueschkatze: Oh, yes. There have been many smaller challenges. From buggy plugins, to not being sure how to effectively show and tell what I want the player to experience. And also being limited on time and money. I’m a freelance artist and am currently living from savings. I’m hoping that CaO will sell well enough that I can keep making games afterwards. The future will show~!

Regarding bugs… I contacted the creators of the plugins and all of them have been very nice people and fixed them for me! If you provide them enough information to quickly get an idea what they need to fix, the chance is pretty good they’ll do it within a short time. This community is great, and most people are very willing to help each other.

Have any aspects of your project changed over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? *Plueschkatze: It hasn’t changed THAT much. A few ideas for the backstory changed, especially for one of the characters. But overall it’s been a pretty straight forward process.

What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? If you don't have a team, do you wish you had one or do you prefer working alone? *Plueschkatze: I’m solo developing on this project. While I enjoy teamwork with like-minded people, I also very much enjoy working alone. But I’m sharing my progress with a few friends, which is a joy. Having people around me that share the same passion (game dev) really has a huge impact on my productivity!

What is the best part of developing the game? *Plueschkatze: Normally it’s world-building, but CaO doesn’t have much of that, because it’s such a short project. And as an artist, it’s of course the art part. ;3

Do you find yourself playing other RPG Maker games to see what you can do with the engine, or do you prefer to do your own thing? *Plueschkatze: I don’t have much time to play games. So I usually only play the games I really, really, really badly wanna experience by myself. The last one was actually Zelda Breath of the Wild, and I avoided footage of some that I’d love to play in the future (like Nier: Automata and The Last Guardian). But I tend to watch let’s plays and streams while I’m working. I also follow a lot of devs on twitter and check forums to see what other RM and indie devs are working on. I see myself less as a ‘RPGM Dev’, and more as a general indie dev, because I wouldn’t mind switching to another engine, though I really, really love how kind hearted this community is. The engine is also really easy to use.

Which character in your game do you relate to the most and why? (Alternatively: Who is your favorite character and why?) *Plueschkatze: The deity is my favorite, since they are fun to write. But I feel very connected to both Ceress and Orea, I love both girls.

Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Plueschkatze: Because I’m not done (the last 20%!), I can’t tell yet. So far I’ve really enjoyed this journey and you’ll ALWAYS have parts that you could improve. Nothing will ever be perfect. At least not to everyone. The biggest challenge is to know when to stop and call it done. Many devs get way too lost in their process.

Once you finish your project, do you plan to explore the game's universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Plueschkatze: I don’t have plans for a sequel (or prequel), but one never knows.

What do you look most forward to upon/after release? *Plueschkatze: This is my first commercial release. It’s also my first game that will be on steam. I’m really looking forward to that experience and to learn from it, so it will be better the next time! I’m also SUPER curious how people will react and if they’ll enjoy the game. Thinking about it makes me really nervous, ha ha ha!

Is there something you're afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game? *Plueschkatze: I’m afraid of rude comments. Ugh. But who isn’t, right? I’m also afraid of being unable to keep making games, because I enjoy it so, so, so much. But I have to pay my bills, so more freelance work means less game dev time for my own projects.

Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Plueschkatze: If you’re serious about gamedev, try to learn. Do not only watch RPGM tutorials, but also some about character development, world-building, documentations about the era you’re game is set in, etc. etc. Also, network with other game devs that are in a similar position as you and that are like-minded. Sharing knowledge will help you improve and grow a lot! Also share your progress. Good feedback will not only help you improve your game, but also encourage you to stay motivated and to actually WORK on your game.

Question from last month's featured dev @lonestargame: What's the most ambitious thing you've tried to do with the engine? *Plueschkatze: Uff. I think there’s nothing overly ambitious/complex within my current project, so this is a tough one for me! Ha ha.

Usually the poor thing came in the form of his smartphone but today, his victim was Jeongguk’s prized possession, his Canon Mark IV camera. It was no wonder to Jimin as to why Tae and Jeongguk got along and how they even came to meet.

The whole thing was rather sweet, almost too sweet in Jimin’s opinion. They both had been walking around the Student Services building on campus during freshmen orientation at the request of their advisor who asked if they could help give tours. After the freshmen they were responsible for made their way back to their buses, the two friends continued to hang around and Taehyung being himself began to take photos of the passersby. It was only until he accidentally bumped into someone that he stopped. The two had clicked instantly as soon as Tae saw Jeongguk’s camera hanging from his neck and from then they had been inseparable. He had later described it as “Jiminieeee I think I just met my soulmate” and Jimin faked gagged but laughed as Tae swiped over the few selfies he had taken with their new friend. That had been a year ago and their relationship was going strong. Jimin figured they’d never break away from their ‘honeymoon phase’ and could honestly only thank them because he met his own boyfriend, Yoongi, through Jeongguk.

Presently, Tae was still busy playing around with the camera settings and Jimin sighed, placing his chin on his hand, looking out the window to enjoy the scenery. Tae took the chance to photograph him and the flash went off before he could protest.

“Yah! This isn’t the time to take pictures, Tae. As your best friend, I’m trying to save you from getting brutally killed by your boyfriend.”

He huffed and the sound of laughter pulled both of their attention towards Jin who was making his way towards their booth with their drinks and Tae’s scone in hand. He carefully set everything down and sat next to them after making sure there were no new customers trailing in.

“So, what’s this I hear about Jeongguk killing Taehyung? What did Tae do this time?”

Tae choked on the piece of scone he had been chewing and took a large sip of his drink, sending a small pout towards Jin while Jimin giggled.

“This time? Hyung, I’m completely innocent here! Gukkie is the one who’s always pulling pranks so this time I’m going to get him back.”

Tae smiled triumphantly, looking over the camera he had set down on the table with almost a glow in his eyes.

“He’s planning on telling Jeongguk that he broke his camera as a prank, Jin hyung. The one camera he’s always bragging about and probably still paying off. Please, for the love of everything, explain to him why this could end up with him in a grave.”

As they were getting to know each other, both Taehyung and Jeongguk realized that both had a very competitive side but it was the latter who would constantly win the challenges they’d set up much to Tae’s chagrin. It didn’t help that Jeongguk had set up a YouTube account to showcase his works and his growing fanbase also led to him setting up an account where he played games and yes, put up videos of him pranking Taehyung. But since the youngest of the two had been slightly busy as of late, Tae had decided it was time to turn the tide to his favor and get his sweet, sweet revenge. He could practically taste it alongside the chocolatey goodness of his coffee.

Jin furrowed his brow as Jimin explained the situation and let out a small hum afterwards, rubbing his chin as he thought it over. Both Jimin and Tae figured he had gotten that small habit from Namjoon, the ever-philosophical boyfriend of Jin’s. It was cute and it reminded them how much of a mom and dad friend both Jin and Namjoon could be. Together with the entire group, they were practically a family: the parents and their five kids. Well, a platonic family seeing as half of them were dating each other.

“I mean, Jeongguk is pretty whipped–“

This earned another small choke from Tae and a small puff of laughter from Jimin.

“-but I’m not too sure about this. Didn’t he mention that he had a portfolio due in the next few days? He might react badly if he believes you broke his camera.”

Taehyung sighed and took another sip of his drink before pointing at the two of them.

“Why are you guys acting as if I’m actually going to break his camera? I’ll only let the prank run for a bit. Yea, he might be a little pissed but it’ll be fine once I tell him the truth. I’m even planning on recording it to prove it to you guys!”

Jin and Jimin looked at each other and collectively sighed. They knew how passionate Taehyung could get about something once he put his mind to it and figured that they’d probably get nowhere if they tried to convince him otherwise. They had learned that the hard way when Taehyung had come across a pet store while the group was shopping at their local mall. It had taken a nightmarish amount of convincing on their behalf and even then, Tae came out happily skipping with a new pet fish. They all agreed behind his back to never walk around that area of the mall ever again in fear that the next time he’d buy the entire store.

“By record, you mean so that you can put it up on that youtube channel, you liar.”

Jimin rolled his eyes and Tae smiled, not even minding one bit that he’d been caught.

“Well, just let us know how it goes so we know not to send the police over.”

“Okay guys aaaaaandd I think I’m done properly setting this up. Can you guys see the room?”

Taehyung stepped out of the way of the webcam and checked his phone to read the comments people were leaving on the video. He had ultimately decided to livestream everything and had turned to his trusty phone and YouTube app to do so because having a laptop open would ruin the prank. Tae had made sure everything was set up so that everyone watching could get a good view of the room which only really contained two beds – one which was his and the other was Jimin’s. Bless his chim chim for letting him use their dorm room for this prank. Of course, he had made sure to clean up as much as he possibly could so that no one could judge them but he also tried to not make it obvious or else Jeongguk would notice. As soon as he started to get confirmations from his viewers, he smiled and pulled a chair close to the webcam to sit in while he explained his elaborate plan.

“As you guys know, Gukkie is constantly pulling pranks on me sooooo today I decided to get him back! The prank is actually super small since I didn’t have time to really think of anything complicated but it does include this!”

He brought Jeongguk’s camera into view and smiled at the webcam as he continued.

“This is Gukkie’s camera and I had asked him to let me borrow it today while he was on a trip with a few of our friends. Its honestly his favorite, he carries it with him everywhere we go, and I’m pretty sure it was super expensive. I texted him earlier telling him to come to my dorm and as soon as he walks in, I’m going to tell him I broke it.”

He laughs and continues to check the comments as they fly by: some laughing alongside him and others, who knew about Jeongguk’s photography experience, expressing concern for his wellbeing. It struck Taehyung that some of the viewers had followed Jeongguk from his photography account to his entertainment one and it was nice to see how many of them were that loyal. He smiled and inwardly thanked them for supporting his Gukkie in all his interests.

“I don’t think Gukkie will get too mad at this so I’ll be fine. He might be a tough kookie,” he let out a small giggle at his own joke, “but I have the best doggy eyes to rival a puppy. He won’t know what’s coming his way.”

He grabbed the camera again and stood up, leaning towards the webcam and hiding it behind it.

“Okay so I’m putting it behind the webcam and I’m gonna cover both with some school stuff and a shirt and yes, don’t worry, I’m being extra careful not to put pressure on Jeongguk’s precious.”

Taehyung began to search through the room for some school materials, namely light things like folders and syllabi and grabbed his favorite jacket before making his way back to the webcam. He carefully rearranged the school things on top of the cameras first before bunching up his jacket and laying it on top. He sat back down on the chair, pleased to see that they were hidden well and did a quick wave.

“Can you guys still see? I tried to place thing around the lens of the webcam but let me know if anything is covered.”

Once again, after getting more confirmation that yes everyone could still see the room, he smiled and continued to explain his plan. Before he could get a word out, his phone loudly blared out Celine Dion’s voice smoothly singing How Does a Moment Last Forever and he quickly recognizes it as Jeongguk calling him. He holds up a finger to the webcam before getting up and answering the call.

“Hi Jeongguk. Hm? Yea, I’m at my dorm right now. In a few minutes? Yea, yea I’m here. No, nothing’s wrong… no you didn’t do anything wrong, you silly bunny. I’ll- I’ll let you know as soon as you get here, okay? Bye, love ya.”

As soon as he ended the call, Taehyung rushed to the seat and began digging through his pockets and took out a small bottle of eye drops.

“Okay, wow, somehow I pulled off sounding sad on the phone perfectly but I forgot to tell you guys that I’m gonna put some eye drops to make it seem like I’m crying. He’ll be here in a few and he’s probably rushing now so here goes nothing. Wish me good luck.”

He smiled once more at the webcam and dropped a few eye drops in each eye before making his way to his bed, silently looking through his phone. Not even a minute later, he heard a knock on the door and he made his way to open it, letting Jeongguk in and drop his things off. As he youngest was starting to unravel his scarf, Taehyung let out a small sniffle and flopped down on the bed again, making sure to keep his face turned away from Jeongguk. The latter froze and quickly looked at him and practically ran to Tae’s side.

“Hey, hey. Babe, what’s wrong?”

Jeongguk softly turned Tae’s face towards him and let out a small gasp when he saw that he was ‘crying’. A+ acting Taehyung, he was going to pull this off.

“It-s, it’s nothing, really…”

At the small voice crack, that even surprised him, Jeongguk pulled Taehyung close enough so that their noses were touching. Tae sniffled again and kept his eyes down, making some of the eye drops stick to his eyelashes and slowly make their way down his cheeks. He better be getting an Oscar after this.

“Did someone bother you today? Hyung, please tell me what’s wrong.”

Jeongguk let out a small whine, using the edge of his scarf to wipe at Tae’s cheeks. A small urge to laugh began to make its way up Tae’s throat and he quickly covered it with a sob and hid his face on Jeongguk’s shoulder.

“Hyung, please. Let me help you. I hate seeing you sad. I’ll start crying with you.”

He sniffled one more time before lifting his head to look at Gukkie.

“I… I accidentally broke your camera.”

He practically whispered it with a few sobs in between. Jeongguk looked at him and blinked once. Then again.

“Camera?”

Tae nodded and looked down.

“The- the one you let me borrow. I accident- ally broke it while at the café wi- with Jimin.”

He tried to hide his face again to make it more believable, and to hide the small smile that was trying to creep its way onto his face, but Jeongguk kept a hold on his cheeks.

“Taetae hyung, we can just take it to the repair shop, it’s okay.”

He shook his head as much as he possibly could with the way Jeongguk was holding him and thanked the god of eye drops for creating this brand because wow they really stuck to his lashes.

“I don’t think they can fix it, Gukkie… It’s completely smashed.”

“Smashed? How do you smash a camera?”

Taehyung let out a louder sob at that.

“I-I’m really s-sorry.”

Jeongguk, seeming to understand that he made matters worse, kneeled so that they were at eye level and began to wipe at Tae’s eyes.

“No, no, no, hyung, please don’t cry. It’s only a camera. It really isn’t that big of a deal, okay.”

He let out a small huff of laughter as Tae looked at him with pleading eyes. He would definitely choose Taehyung over a camera any day.

“It wasn’t even that good of a camera. I’ll get another one. I only care about you, babe. Please don’t cry over this.”

He pulled Tae closer to him again, making sure to pepper a few kisses on his face, starting with his nose and then his cheeks. By the end, Tae was softly laughing alongside him although he was still clutching at Jeongguk’s jacket. After a few seconds of silence, Tae spoke up again.

“I’ll buy you a new one. How much was this one?”

Jeongguk was already shaking his head before Tae could finish his question.

“No, hyung, it’s nothing to worry about. You don’t have to do that. It was an accident.”

“Yea, but don’t you have your portfolio due in a few days. Gukkie I can’t let you fail your class because of me.”

Jeongguk pressed Tae’s cheeks together and gave him a quick peck on the lips, smiling the entire time.

“I’ll just ask one of my classmates to let me borrow theirs. I do have friends, you know, aside from our group. They won’t mind.”

They both laughed at that and fell into a comfortable silence, with Jeongguk still kneeled in front of Taehyung. He grabbed his scarf again and wiped more tears away from Tae’s face, before taking it off completely to wrap around and pull Tae on his lap. The elder gasped and put his arms on Jeongguk’s shoulder to balance his weight so that he wouldn’t send Gukkie flat on his back.

“If something like this bothers you again, let me know, okay tae tae. I love you more than anything.”

Taehyung hid his face again but he was sure Jeongguk already saw the blossoming blush at the words.

“I do have one more thing to tell you, actually… a small favor.”

He said against Jeongguk’s neck.

“Do you want to borrow another camera?”

Tae snorted and lightly hit Gukkie in the arm.

“Yah! That’s so mean of you, Jeonggukie.”

“Ow, sorry, sorry. What’s the favor?”

Taehyung stood up, pulling Jeongguk up with him and made his way towards to where the webcam was at.

“Can you, maybe, wave a bit? Wave hi towards this direction.”

Jeongguk looked at him weirdly before awkwardly waving. Taehyung laughed at him and before Jeongguk could ask why he was, he reached over and pulled the camera from under his jacket and school materials. In the process, the webcam also came into view and Jeongguk looked at both in utter surprise.

“The camera… it isn’t broken?”

“Nope! Say hi to the viewers. You’ve just been prank'd!”

“I saw the whole thing online. You guys are such saps and I hate you both.”

Taehyung laughed as Jimin sipped on his coffee. The whole group was sitting at the Starbucks peacefully enjoying their drinks and talking about the prank.

“I did amazing and you’re just jealous I pulled it off. And you guys thought Gukkie was going to get mad.”

He turned towards Jeongguk who was sporting a pout at being bested. He had to admit, Taehyung had done a really good job. There was no way he would have been able to figure out that it was a prank.

“’I love you more than anything.’ Ahh, that was honestly so romantic. Namjoon, you need to step up your game.”

Jin looked over at Namjoon and he dreamily sighed. Jeongguk only blushed and hid his face in his hands while the rest of them laughed.

“I’m so getting you back, Taehyung.”

The Nail: May 2017

I see lots of weekly/bi-weekly/monthly fic recommendation lists going around, and I think this is absolutely wonderful exposure for writers from their peers and those who may not write, but sure do enjoy reading. 

A great thing about the lists I've seen is their focus on certain categories of fic - very ideal for readers to sort what they'd like to read; thing is, I haven't personally seen one that focuses solely on the quality of the writing.

You know - Character dimension. Writing with clever readers in mind. Crazy crisp dialogue. Incredibly tight plotting. Big emotion.

So what’s the scoop on The Nail?  

Since there's lots of opportunity to get on the aforementioned types of lists, The Nail's not gonna focus on those. You can find more detail on what that means HERE.

What The Nail isn't about is perfection. It isn't about Pulitzer-level contenders. It's about seeing focus and effort radiate out of the screen.

Though I focus on Supernatural, it doesn't matter what fandom or if it is a completely original work; how "known" or "unknown" the author may be; poetry, series, long, short  - quality is quality. If an author nailed it, they [and others] should know it.

And here's the thing: I'm not going to be the only one making the call - YOU are the main curators. The aim is to kick out a round-up on/near the top of every month, filled with what you think is the best of the lot. There are obviously many diet plans in the world. Choosing one diet over another can be a daunting task.

So the moment you’ve made your choice, and prepping healthy meals is the next step, sticking to your chosen diet is of paramount importance. A lack of focus is often to blame for weight loss failure. You’re very likely to wind up back at the beginning of your journey.

This is why you definitely want to compile a small library of recipes that fit within your particular diet plan. So if you’ve chosen the ketogenic diet as your weight loss method, for example, then you ONLY want those types of recipes in your library… and nothing else.

This is extremely important.

I’ve been guilty of hopping from one plan to the next myself, which is why I bring this up. And when I really think about it, there’s only one reason why…

On low-carb, you crave carbs. On a low-fat diet, you crave fat. It’s always super tempting to dabble. And counter-arguments can be pretty compelling. And let’s tell the truth here. Recipe videos can be 100 percent tough to resist. 

If you expect to see lasting results, you need to stick to your chosen plan of action. Reaching your weight loss goals may be as simple as eating natural foods and limiting your caloric intake.

I can certainly see the merit in that, even though I’m no diet or fitness guru. Don’t pig out all day, steer clear of prepackaged junk, and you should see some pretty powerful results. Add some exercise into the mix and look out!

You’ll probably recognize this as common weight loss advice. And this is for good reason!

Calorie reduction isn’t the only game in town though. Many diets put more of an emphasis on macro-nutrient ratios. And playing around too much with those may be something to steer clear of.

Stick to the plan. Give yourself a fighting chance!
