Hiiii I need help

I’m having trouble writing a fight scene between two characters in a relationship. I don’t want it to be a break up sort of fight, just a healthy spat between lovers that will make their relationship all the stronger after they resolve it. But I’m not really well versed in “healthy conflict” so I was hoping you’d have some questions to keep in mind/tips experience you could share because you’re an amazing writer 🙏🏻

first, thank you so much for your sweet words. 😭😭😭😭😭😭🙏 second, i have been pondering your question for a day and a half!

i have been really thinking about it and i have some initial thoughts… but i am sure that this post will just be the start of an ongoing conversation. i think the word i have been chewing on is “healthy.” on the one hand, there are certain things that most people might universally agree as “healthy conflict” in a relationship (or nearly universally), and then there are things that are very culture-dependent (and i do not mean this necessarily in the essentialist sense, i.e., nation-state-as-culture, but also in terms of ‘doing culture’ according to family, friends, region, socioeconomic status, social rank, behaviors, etc.). and then there are things in each relationship that may be less healthy than the ideal but still healthy in the long run, in the sense that it provides space for growth; couples have horribles fights that nearly tear them apart but, for whatever reason, don’t. in my experience, both in life and in fiction, sometimes i think these can often be the hardest, toughest fights, because they have the lowest lows but the highest potential for hope/resolution/something better.

if i am thinking on what it is about these fights that make them so painful and exhausting and “i just want to find a way to fix this but i can’t see the way forward and i am going to stay because i love them but i don’t have the tools right now to get out of this hole,” here’s what comes to mind:

both people are in pain

somehow, trust has been lost to some degree

one or both people do not currently feel safe, either from judgment or abandonment… maybe both… maybe something else too

a disagreement may turn “ugly” so quickly when things that are shared in confidence are thrown back in someone’s face, or some vulnerable sticking point that is supposed to be protected is being used against them in the heat of the argument because things begin to escalate so quickly

at what point can one person step in and find a space to pause/timeout; table the conversation; de-escalate? if neither can, the fight gets worse. if at least one can… that could be the turning point for a softer resolution, even if the other person needs additional coaxing or convincing to join them in the de-escalation. can both suddenly or eventually pause and de-escalate? through humor? through a release of emotion at the core under the anger, like tears and sadness?

at some point during these fights, or perhaps after, one or both might start to feel shame… for their behaviors, their reactions, their words… how can one person bridge the gap that was created when one or both crossed a line? (or many lines?) sometimes all it can take is a hug to lessen the divide, and sometimes apologies are necessary, and plans for changing behaviors, and explanations, or any combination. so how does one (or both) handle their apology? are they both good at taking accountability and learning at this stage in their relationship? do they make good on their promises to change, or at least try? (we are human after all!)

does the resolution match the degree of the fight? if something was weaponized, has it been dismantled by the end, or is it left hanging in the air, even after the apology or de-escalation?

definitely lots to think about! i think the degree of “healthy” is going to depend on a lot of factors, and will inevitably also be influenced by your readers’ personal experiences and what they bring to their interpretations! but definitely things to potentially keep in mind: who is in pain and why? what tools do they have to resolve the pain? are they scared to solve it or not solve it (or both)? how well can they solve it at this moment in time—or later?

Nivi, I want to start off by saying that you’re one of my favorite authors, and that I loved In Between Shades of Blue so much! I really didn’t think anything could top it, but you’ve out done yourself once again. I am in love with Golden Hour! Monday night is quickly becoming one of my favorite parts of the week. I just read GH with a big smile on my face 😀, until the angst gets angsting and then my face is usually 🫨. I also want to say that reading the reviews after a new chapter is one of my favorite things. It very much gives we are all part of a book club, but not just any book club, a book club with the author. And I just love those interactions so much. I’ve been wanting to join a book club for a while and this very much is scratching that itch so thank you 😊.

Now onto the review:

I loved the flashback of when they were on Team USA. Fetus Pazzi always makes me smile because how are two people so lucky to have found their person at 15? They make me sick in all the best ways. Did they ever discuss their crushes like maybe a celebrity crush? Azzi didn’t seem shocked that Paige’s date was with a girl. I just wondered if maybe they had previously discussed who they found attractive. Oh and the picnic scene was giving me In Between Shades of Blue. I love that in both universes their first date was a picnic. Paige is such a sap I love it. Soft Paige is my favorite.

Azzi makes me want to both hug and shake her. Girlie Pop is so in her head all the time. Whenever her guilt of having said no pops up, I just want to wrap her up in a warm blanket and hand her a cup of tea. I know we’ll find out the reason later, but I can’t help but feel like it was something as simple as she wasn’t ready at the time Paige had asked, and Paige took it as a never and they both made choices off of that misconception that fractured them both. I know Azzi felt she had a good reason when she said no, so I hate that she is constantly beating herself up about it and simultaneously making decisions based on that fear.

It’s cute that Azzi keeps sending her parents to look after Paige. First with the wedding and then the morning after fortgate. It just shows how much she really cares for Paige even when she wouldn’t allow herself to be the one to do it . Makes me wonder how many times during their breakup Azzi was still looking out for Paige, unbeknownst to blondie. There is something just so sweet and pure in the bond they have with each other. They really are best friends first. Also, just as an aside, I really love how you capture their relationship through their banter. It really does feel like stuff they would say to each other, and it’s definitely one of my favorite aspects of their dynamic.

When Stephie says “I better be” to Tim saying she’ll always be his favorite, it just reminded me of the Lebron live when Azzi threatened with “better not” to someone wanting to take Paige out for breakfast. I dunno if I’m reaching on that one, but it was something that jumped in my head when I read it.

Love love all the interactions and family dynamics with the Fudds. Everyone really is scared of Princess 😭. Not only do you capture the bond between Paige and Azzi that feels true, you’re so good at writing for everyone else’s personality as well. It really does just feel like a full fleshed out universe.

Paige asking Azzi “You won’t - you won’t run away again tomorrow morning will you?” Poor Paige is traumatized 😭. But also Azzi answering “I won’t run away again” feels more like a declaration to herself. Like maybe she is finally willing to allow herself to be happy. But also feels like we might end up getting a switch up between the two where Paige is pulling away and Azzi is hanging on. yourusername Good things come in two 🥺 Twins, we’re having twins and we couldn’t be more excited!!!! I was able to surprise my husband and let him know we were expecting not only 1, but 2 babies, and as soon as I seen that huge smile on his face, everything changed, any doubts or scares went out the window. Our family is growing and I couldn’t be happier 💖 💙 Mia and Ezequiel are excited as well 🥺🙏🏻

Cater and Ruthie's relationship was… weird. Not in a bad way, it's just– they were in their first few weeks as a couple, not much have changed from when they were friends... but now there was an urge to just be romantic and Ruthie felt pressured to be more like that... But she didn't know how.

Listen, Ruthie had lived her life surrounded by love, but never in love. It was strange. She knew rationally what people did in relationships, how they acted, but it was so… foreign. The idea that someone would love her, would want to do what couples usually do with her. Could someone truly love her? Was she allowed to experience love for herself?

And with someone as wonderful as Cater, nonetheless?

So… she just stood there awkwardly, fidgeting with her hands, looking down, unsure what to do as he walked her back to her house after yet another... date. If you could even call such an awkward hang out as a date.

She didn't know what to do, was it ok to hold his hand? And after they arrive at her house, what could she possibly do? Usually she would tell others to give their partner a kiss on the cheek as a goodbye… but was that something she should do? Would Cater be comfortable with such a thing? Maybe–

“Woah there!” Cater held onto the girl’s wrist, making her bump into him. Her hand on his chest and face looking at his eyes in confusion and shock. They both went red and Ruthie retreated embarrassed, holding her face in her hands. Cater cleared his throat, looking away. “You almost hit the wall.”

“The wall?” She repeated, a bit confused. She looked ahead and realized she was finally home… she didn't even notice, she was so stuck in her own head. “Oh. Right, we’re here…”

“We sure are.” He said, scratching his neck, his body weight moving from one foot to another. “Hey, before you get inside… I gotta know, are you ok, Ruthie?”

“Wha– yeah, of course.” She lied. Unfortunately for her Cater was a pro at seeing when people were hiding their true feelings.

“You can be honest with me, you know that, right?” He walked towards her, holding her hands gently as he tilted his head to get a better look at her face. “What is it?”

Ruthie looked into his eyes for a brief moment before she felt her face getting warm and she was forced to look down. She stared at their hands locked with each other, how much care she felt with the way he held her hands… she didn't deserve him, did she?

“Are you– are you not happy with our rela–”

“Never even think about that!” The blonde rushed to get that thought of his to perish, her voice way too loud. She put a hand to her mouth as Cater chuckled. Goodness, she had no self restraint, had she? “I mean… no, no I'm happy with our relationship, it's just…”

How could she even begin to explain herself?

“Go on.” He looked at her, encouraging her, and Ruthie melted in his gaze, a small smile showing on her face.

“I just… I'm not really used to this, it’s all so new…” she sighed. “I feel like... it's like I'm doing everything wrong…”

“What? Of course not, that's so silly of you!” Cater let out a small laugh that made Ruthie's stomach fill with butterflies. He cupped her face in his hand, a shy smile on his face. "Ruthie, you're the best girlfriend I could ever hope for." She tried to deny it, but he didn't give her a chance to speak. “If it's any consolation… I also think I'm being terrible at this boyfriend thing.”

Ruthie shook her head, holding his wrists and leaning her face in his hand. The ginger swore she could be able to hear his heartbeat with how loud his heart was pounding.

“No, you're wonderful. Trust me, you… you just make me so happy.”

With that, there was silence. Neither of them dared to speak as they simply stared at each other, their hearts going a mile per second and their faces growing red. Ruthie felt the need to look away, but she forced herself not to… Cater reassured her that she was fine, and he was having the same issues as her… so… she guessed it wasn't wrong to be awkward, right?

As long as their attitudes were from the heart.

With that, Ruthie moved closer to his face, giving him a quick kiss on the lips. It was so fast their lips barely touched, but the feeling was still there. His lips were softer and warmer than she imagined.

“Ok, bye!”

And just like that, she ran away. Despite Cater’s calls for her name she quickly unlocked her door and got inside, sitting on the floor and holding her face. She squealed as she kicked the ground happily, she did it! She did something romantic, this was progress!! See? She could do it!!

And his expression… he looked at her with so shock, but with so much adoration… Ruthie couldn't help but smile foolishly as she continued to squeal silently to not bother her neighbors.

She just hoped he liked it too…

“There you are, how was your–” Riddle began before stopping mid sentence, looking at the boy up and down. “Cater, why are you so red–”

And the boy ran away.

Or was there something about him, some intrinsic quality to his body, that Shouyou would be able to pick up on even after he'd scrubbed everything else away?  Shouyou pressed his lips to the side of Kageyama's neck briefly before biting down.  Kageyama groaned, the hand on his hair tightening. Yes, yes, good. Shouyou had missed the burn on his scalp.  Kageyama did taste even better, though it was unclear—Shouyou might need a bigger sample size. He licked over the dents his teeth left behind, then turned his head a little to the left and bit the meaty spot between Kageyama's neck and shoulder.  (It always impressed him how Kageyama just let him get away with this kind of stuff. How he never yelled or complained or pulled his hair about it, even if Shouyou bit hard enough to hurt. Maybe he liked it. Kageyama was weird like that.) (But then again, weren't they both? People called them freaks for a reason.)
