Since I’m officially done with the main guides to Stray Kids, I figured I’d do a couple fun guides, just for, well, fun. I’m done with the dynamics, but I didn’t want to stop making these, lmao. So, I thought it would be interesting to kind of explain the boys music, kind of like a summary of all the music they’ve put out. Not each song individually, that may be too much. But maybe the albums/mini albums/ EPs, etc.
This post contains info about the groups first 4 EPs: Mixtape, I Am Not, I Am Who, and I Am You.
(Most of the info was taken from Wikipedia, or from my own listen of the album. I’ve gotten bits and pieces from other areas, but yea. If I got something wrong, or missed something important, please let me know!)
Mixtape EP (2018)
actually a pre-debut EP, that was released in January of 2018 (they debuted in March). if i’m not mistaken, all the songs on this one appear in the survival show.
genres - kpop, hip-hop
includes 7 songs: hellevator; beware (grrr); spread my wings; yayaya; glow; school life, 4419
has 3 music videos, 2 of which are performance videos: hellevator, beware (grrr), and spread my wings
all of the songs were written by 3racha, which is a common theme, as they write the majority of the songs for the group
includes themes of mental health, being young, growing up, and finding yourself. understandable, since the oldest member at the time would have been chan, and he was barely in his 20s (20/21, I think?). the youngest, i.n., was around 16/17.
my personal favorite from the EP: Beware (Grrr), but I understand why people love Hellevator so much.
Peak position (on any chart) - 2, on both the Circle Album Chart (previously known as the Goan Album Chart) and the US World Album (Billboard) chart.
I Am Not EP (2018)
their actual debut EP. released in March 2018.
includes 7 songs and one bonus song: Not!; District 9; Mirror; Awaken; Rock; Grow Up; 3rd Eye; and Mixtape #1
genres - kpop, hip-hop
has 4 music videos, 1 of which is a performance video and 1 is a street version: district 9, mirror, rock, and grow up.
includes themes of growing up, finding a safe place, being young and figuring out who you are, and believing in yourself
again, all the lyrics were written by 3racha, in some capacity
you learn pretty quickly that these boys don’t hesitate to talk about more difficult subjects, stuff a lot of their fans relate to. they also work pretty hard at keeping their lyrics relatively neutral, even the few songs about love that they’ve done are pretty much gender neutral
mixtape #1 is also called ‘placebo’
Not! isn’t actually a full song, it’s more like an opener? like, it sets you up for the rest of the songs, but its not a full song on its own. they do openers like this in 5 (?) of their EPs. this one is just seungmin, lee know, and bang chan
my personal favorite: Rock, but again, I understand why a lot of people love District 9 so much.
Peak position - 4, on the Circle Album Chart (previously Goan Album Chart)
I Am Who EP (2018)
released in August of 2018.
includes 7 songs, plus a bonus track: WHO?; My Pace; Voices; Question; Insomnia; M.I.A.; Awkward Silence; and Mixtape #2
genres - kpop, hip-hop
has some kind of music video for every single song, whether it’s a regular music video, a street one, or just a performance video. there’s also an extra performance video for my pace
includes themes of being yourself, not comparing yourself to others, not letting others bring you down and growing up.
once again, Who? is not an official, full song. this one is just Lee Know, Han, and Felix. (don’t misunderstand. although these openers are not full, official songs, they are still very good and i recommend checking them out. who? happens to be one of my favorites)
Mixtape #2 is also called ‘Behind the Light’. i’m not 100% certain here, but it seems to be a song about the boys themselves, their friendship, and their journey as trainees until debut. if anyone sees this and that’s wrong, let me know.
my personal favorite: Insomnia (but My Pace and M.I.A. are a close second)
Peak position - 3 on the Circle Album Chart (previously known as the Goan Album Chart)
I Am You EP (2018)
released in October of 2018.
includes 7 songs, plus one bonus track: You; I Am You; My Side; Hero’s Soup; Get Cool; N/S; 0325; Mixtape #3
genres - kpop, hip-hop (these do get expanded in the future, but wikipedia lists the genres for the first 4 albums as the same)
has music videos for all except hero’s soup and 0325. and once again, there’s a bonus performance video for i am you.
includes themes of surrounding yourself with people you love, being yourself (a theme that honestly appears in almost every single one of their albums/EPs, especially most of their early stuff), and being happy.
and once again, You is not a full song. i believe it’s changbin, i.n. and hyunjin.
mixtape #3 is also called ‘For You’. it’s a song that’s definitely meant for younger individuals, specifically people still in school, but it’s a sweet message either way. it also has some beautiful lines and some of my favorite chan singing parts.
random note: n/s will never be my favorite song, but the video is so random and the song is so weird, I highly recommend checking it out. it kind of shows how much these boys are just big dorks, and it’s very funny
my personal favorite: I Am You (a song that can be interpreted as being for Stay or about the boys themselves.)
Peak position - 2 on the Circle Album Chart (previously known as the Goan Album Chart)
Note - All of these, besides their pre-debut album, are a trilogy, basically. (You can see that in their names) I’m not 100% of the background with the trilogy itself, but all three have themes of being yourself and finding your place in the world, which fits the ‘I Am...’ theme.

sometimes you just have to let yourself be a bit neurodivergent.
i hate going out, it gives me a lot of anxiety and sensory input that i dont like, and i am often forced to talk to people.
so i do this thing on more difficult days, or sometimes just for fun, where i "bring a fictional character with me". i walk and imagine Fictional Character walking next to me. they talk to me, reassure me, hype me up, whatever i need them to do.
today dean winchester came christmas shopping with me. he went over the list with me of stuff i needed to get, told me i was doing a good job every time i finished in a certain shop, reminded me to take a deep breath when i got a little overwhelmed.
and yea. its kinda silly. and i know its just me talking to myself in a different voice, but it Works! especially since all of my special interests/hyperfixations tend to be tv/movie related.
so do what you gotta do to Get Shit Done. stop holding yourself to neurotypical standards. if you need Fictional Character to tell you you're doing a good job, do it! if you need Favourite Singer to walk you to school, do it! yea it might feel silly but you're literally fighting against your own brain to get stuff done every single day. you can have a little self indulgent daydream, as a treat.
