On Composition:

Goal

For me the goal of my illustration r Storytelling n full on Emotional experience.

(It's something I've been trying to achieve but cannot guarantee I hit it all the time, sometimes bc of my habit I'll lost myself during the process and looking back find out I miss something important, so the following is the best theories I could provide. Most of improvement r still in daily practice(●'◡'●))

To paint with beautiful compostion, you'll first have a solid story in mind, it can be simplified into " who when where n what", writing them down on a note n stick it near by would help.

And as to emotional experience, is something I can't get hold of all the time... music might help I guess? I have headcanon playlists for every chatacter or ship I wanna paint, and extract emotions from them everyday.

But there's some practical methods too.

Methods

I've worked storyboard n director for 2 years in the past, even though I'm not proud of the projects I worked on, some knowledge might still be useful.

It's mostly 2 methods: Silhouette & Movement

Well for silhouettes there's already bunch of books discussing this, one of my favs is Framed Ink, I'm sure u can find a pdf somewhere on the net.

(I find this photo on the internet bc mine is not around)

Basically it's that, think about the objects within your image, by using shadows n their original colors, you can split it into interesting shapes. This will visually elevate the overall feeling of composition.

Also, there's a cheat build in humem's understanding of an image.

basically this, putting important object on the 1/3 points of an image is the fastest cheat.

Also, contrast your silhouette. If you're painting sth that has no background, try giving your silhouette a constrasted design.

(like in this one, the right side is smooth but I'm putting lots of variation on the left.)

For movement, think about your image as a shot taken when your characters r doing sth.

They would each have a direction to move to, and that forms their movement. Your job here is to arrange them into logical or emotional lines.

If it's a series of work, u can plan out the movement toward the same direction.

(the only time you're seeing their car facing left is when they stopped, I was trying to say that their trip kinda ends here)

Also for manga, comic n movie, make sure your important information is within safe area.

(the area within dotted lines is the safe area, u want your character's expression to be mostly within it. if it's like extreme close-up, the certain area u want to emphasize should be within it.)

I have some examples for these two theories.

First let's analyze this screenshot of one of Kurosawa's film, Seven Samurais.

The story here is that these guys r about to fight, possibly some big conflict. There silhouette can be sumed up like this, within the orange line.

We see this guy sticking out from this shape, implying he might be the head of this crowd.

Movement wise, their spears n heads face the same direction, telling u that the enemy will come from that side. Even this is a still frame, the movement is implied perfectly.

Another sample from Synecdoche,NY by Charlie Kauffman

This is a minimalist way of conveying emotion, u only see one main character here, and hardly any movement. Why is it so powerful?

Our main character, Caden, is in the almost center of this shot. He has a clear n simple shape. You don't normally put your main object in the center, so we'd assume he's very important.

Then there's this repeated notes in the background. When something is repeated a lot, it giver u an impression of pressure. Especially when he's surrounded by them, and they take more space within the frame than he does.

Also, this is a down shot, the camera is pointing down and behind him. You'll feel your character being watched or at his lower point of life when u do that.

Inspirations:

Even if you're not having enough time, watching reviews n analysis would also help, (but I'd suggest u try to consume the films not listening to critics to get a unique experience.)

summary: when a work trip brings you back home, you don't expect for anyone to await your return or remember you. but despite the time apart, taehyung still does - still looks at you the same way he used to five winters ago.

rid, im not joking when i say this is everything i want in a fanfic. like ex2l always gets me, and you legit mastered it with this one. something about right person wrong time just does it for me. that opening line was so simple but so so so beautiful:

"Love doesn't bloom during frigid winters."

and your ability to fully write in the pov of the character that you've crafted is nutty. like on the outside, it seems like a simple thing to do, but ik from experience that it's really not. like the way you perfectly represented oc's bleakness in the beginning through the word choices, that only shifts when taehyung is being discussed, is a1 storytelling. and same with him, like even when things are falling apart, the metaphor compares oc to a star, n that's how he sees her despite the circumstances. IM EMOTIONAL!!!

and idk dude i think i feel so strongly about this piece bc i relate to this oc sooo much. like the way ur desire to get out of ur current situation bleeds into every aspect of ur life n ruins relationships n u end up even worse than u started off in a lot of ways- NOT THIS FIC BEING A WHOLE HIT PIECE RID LMAO >:(

welcome back to me stealing ideas from @about-the-two-of-us !!

todays episode: i might turn this into a more general digital diary about my social life, rather than focusing so much on crushes. ysee this is what happens when i have to spend a whole half-day without meadow lmao

anyway !! here’s updates :D

meadow went away for the weekend to visit a friend :(( so we couldn't hang out BUT before their train we still went to class together and made jokes about the place they’re visiting and they left their snacks in my bag so i got to see them briefly again to give them back right before they left n we hugged goodbye at the place we first hung out aaaa

that was last weekend, n since then a ton of wild lore has happened !! its been literally 4 days how is any of this real.

monday evening jiji and odie hung out in my dorm and watched some youtube videos from a channel that odie and i rly like that we're trying to introduce jiji to !! those two r always so kind to me im rly glad i have them as friends rn. otherwise the stuff w meadow would be way more taxing i think

tuesday evening i went over to meadow's place after class !! i played a game they introduced me to (they like backseat gaming for this one hehe) and he gave me tons of tips on how to get a good build n i ended up getting further than i ever have before on my last run of the evening !!

and on wednesday (yesterday) meadow and i went on a mini shopping trip after class, then went back to their dorm again for a mini movie marathon !! we got through the first 2 hunger games movies since i hadn't seen them before and meadow is hype to watch the new one that just came out. i rly enjoyed them !! not my favorites ever but i can totally see what the hype is about. and for bonus points, one of my 2 best friends from before uni ,, we'll call them fish (new character alert !!) watched them too super recently so i can talk to them abt it !! fish is the coolest and im gonna be around them more this winter since i'm goin back to their town for a while :D but fr meadow and i watched the first 2 movies in his bed under the covers :,D not quite cuddling bc im a COWARD but squished up next to each other sharing snacks :3 thats still a win in my book !!

aaaaaaaaaaand then came earlier today >< i had a class with goose which was fun but she dipped after that to go study and i walked home alone. when i got back meadow started messaging me that someone they met on their weekend away (a friend of a friend) was messaging them n theyre DOWN BAD. they were GUSHING TO ME AND ITWAS TORTURE i am in actual hell !!!!!!!! turns out hearing ur crush gush about their crush ,, kinda hurts your soul in a way that you feel !! the conversation ended but now im thinkin i should rly confess soon just to save myself the trouble ;; idk how long its healthy to stay in friendship limbo like this.

I feel like summer is vamp h’s favorite season purely because of petal bc obviously he can’t really be outside himself so he used to not like it as much before her, but now :(( like they take a trip to Italy or switch it up for Spain or something and h is spending the day working and doing whatever fancy art guys do, and petal is sitting outside reading whatever book h recommended out of his collection for her and enjoying the sun and the change of scenery, and h comes home to her freshly showered (and during golden hour) with the darkened levels of tan she got from that day and maybe some new freckles and he’s just amazed by her like she’s always beautiful but now she’s got that vacation glow going on and he forgot that humans can get tan and stuff in the summer but he remembers now and :( just loves to love on her even more because her skin is always so warm and soft from the sun and the lotion she uses and he’s just constantly complimenting her and touching and loving on her and just :((( (and if she ever got even the littlest bit sunburned he would lose his mind and buy out the entire store’s aloe supply and insist he put it on for her but I digress)

wait wait wait:(((((( I think you are SOOOOO right:( like summer just...was not his thing before her obvi bc you know The Sun but also like.....it was just odd for him like this is the season for going out and exploring and like going to Italy and seeing the boom of tourists was always jsut....it was weird for him bc he never really experienced a Summer Vacation so he didn't really understand why ppl waited for the summer to do these things but like seeing y/n get excited like ofc shes always excited when he flies her out to Italy and all bt there something different in when they do a summer vacation trip and shes so bubbly and excited and theres just a different energy even when she ends up just sunbathing and only doing little things w him through the day since the sun is still out and they have to stay inside and wait like that doesn't bother her and like u said in the evening w golden hour coming and they come back together and shes all sun warmed from her time out reading in the garden:( and shes freshly showered w soft hair and soft skin smelling perfectly like Her like just :(((((((( hes so happy to see her and that vacation glow that like she completely has no worries or plans or anything she just is Happy to be there and happy to see him and just :(((((((( and ofc he needs to make her dinner he's learned the being in the sun makes her hungry:( but he can't stop himself before hes loving all over her and shes extra warm from her shower and shes cute just keening into him:( and hes telling her all of this that shes so warm she smells so good shes so soft and gosh he doesn't know where that glow on her skin came from but hes never seen anything more divine than her:( its so wonderful to see how a season of sun can change humans like :( seeing her every day is something new that he gets to learn about her and just :(((((( im making myself upset hes so patient and so happy to know her for the rest of his existence:( and also ur so true if she got even the HINT of a sunburn its over hes not only getting all the aloe hes keeping an aloe plant at the villa so he has it At All Times

hope you're doing well. i got added to the evermore taglist some time ago but i've been following the series for a while now. i honestly need to get better at reblogging/commenting on my fave creators works. . .but i wanted to share some of my thoughts on evermore! usually anything that involves exes and past feelings and a heck-ton-of-angst is not my thing. . .but after my sibling introduced me to your series, i got really invested. we would discuss theories and speculate abt what caused ayato to break up w yn. actually no. we'd just trash talk him (LOL)!! i enjoyed (and continue to enjoy) the slice-of-life kinda parts in evermore, esp. when y/n tours around the city and gets to enjoy the mondstat scenery. it was comforting to read and your writing gives off this very pleasant vibe similar to a handwritten letter.

the evermore plot twist shocked me a lot! jean being diluc's fiancé was smth i expected (bc there is no such thing as a smooth road for y/n and relationships @-@) yet didn't. but. . .i also didn't want y/n to end up diluc or even ayato after reconciling w him. y/n has to find happiness alone first. which sounds contradictory,,but it seems like bad news to find a new love at your ex's wedding XD (???). diluc also gave me sm mixed signals, but he clearly does like y/n. this is all opinion soooooo hopefully i don't get thrown into the dadaupa gorge!!

i hope u continue writing and don't get discouraged by the mixed reactions to the plot twist and anything else u might have in mind for evermore and other works!! it's ur story and ur story alone so only u can tell it!! it's incredibly brave to share anything u write w the world. u interact w us a lot and provide such a good content!! we'll (your pen pals) will be waiting patiently for any updates and will be grateful for anything u post, me included.

on the first day nothing reallt happened i think 🤔 did wake up at 4:30 tho 😐 on the second day we went to this Place whcih was good for photos 👍 then we went to the BEACH 🏖 my mom was like don’t get ur clothes wet today ok jjsf go dip ur feet o whatever so i went but the waves r strong and stuff so it did get a little wet and when my mom went to call me back (bc i kept telling her to wait whenever she told me to come back lol) her jeans got wet so she was very 😐😐😐🔪🔪🔪 anyway it was nice but my brother wasn’t there so 😔 anwyay on the third day we went to my brother’s quiz thingy (we went to chennai bc of it in the first place idk if i already mentioned it lol it was a national quiz and stuff so uknow) and he won first place!!! 🐈🐈💃💃 i stole his chocolate (he gave it to me) and he got 7500 rupees so that was cool. then on the fourth day we went to odisha for absolutely no reason (well there was a reason but not like a Vacation reason) and our flight got diverted bc it was raining and they couldn’t land 😔 first it was not cool bc we had PLANS but then they gave us this bag as an apology and it had this giant cookie and gargi. Garig. it changed my life. before i thoughti had reached peak cookie experience with these cookies we got as food on the plane (they were So good) but the giant cookie……anwyay i’m married to the giant cookie now 😌 ok anyway after all that we went to the beach ok 👍 so my mom was planning on going to the temple after so she was like “we’ll come here tmr and u guys can get wet and stuff. today dont” and we WERE listening ok. i was wearing shorts so they barely got wet and my brother had rolled up his jeans so they were like very wet (we are. bad at listening. apparently) so i was like “lol when mom sees u she won’t care about my pants. i’m nothing compared to you” also note yes i realised how weird that sounded lol anyway then like right after i said. there was a big wave that would reach like our waists so we were going back by running backwards and i. i tripped 👍 the only dry part of me was above my neck 😔 mom was not amused 😞 but we went back and me and mybrother changed and i saw the cats (meowmeowmeowmeowmeow) so day 5. today. we went to the beach again and my brother kept sitting and accidentally dragging me down liek??? gifl. i kept tripping over his legs and st one point one of the waves like made him move so the next time a wave came he hung onto my legs like??? anwyay that did not work out. we both got attacked by the wave. n e way during this i almost died too lol i think i’d tripped and then this big wave came and like completely. engulfed me i guess. i would’ve been carried away if the wave didn’t calm down lol 😭 anyway that is the end i guess. hope u enjoyed

but expanding on what u said, jaes characterization in electric bugaloo is definitely one of the best ive seen (esp for a free fic on tumblr) !! there is so much depth to his character, from the way he thinks and the innate care he still has for his sister, but at the same time hes unwilling to let go of his evil (what he deems “good”) deeds but at the end u can truly see that hes not heartless and is truly just a human but yet !! it makes u wonder how hes used that + the charmspeak to manipulate others and use their sympathy. so yes like u said, a villian is much more dangerous when u start to sympathize with them 😭 tldr; jaehyun evil but also not really but like very evil actually

also yes renjun is such a tsundere even to his members 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 but i loved how u charaterized him to consistently think “im in love w yn im in love w yn omg hug kiss mwah yn” and then be completely stoic on the outside. i was a bit frustrated at first bc i was like “just kiss her !!” but ykw thats just him and ill have to deal with it 🤞😔 #touchygfproblems

thank uu !! i just hung out w family friends && we had malatang && sukiyaki + milk tea & a strawb matcha chiffon cake that i baked + two whole tomahawk steaks && played sm mahjong !! i don’t have any cousins/extended family where i live,, so my family friends have really grown to feel like my family ?? and i literally love them sm,, like hanging out w them today has absolutely made this month exponentially better :D
