My Theories for what each Darkin was as an Ascended
(to preserve my sanity, i'm only gonna talk about the main 5 darkin, which are all the darkin champions and xolaani, and i'll put them in order starting with the one with the most supporting evidence and the going down to the ones that i purely made up)
Xolaani: Bird
Tumblr media
We already know this one, we can see her statue in The Call cinematic and you can see feathers on her chest and a bird-like head shape. We can't tell what exact kind of bird she was, but she was definitely avian.
Aatrox: Angel
First off, it's never said that Ascended have to be based on animals. Every fan interpretation I see of Valeeva, a Darkin described in Twilight of the Gods, looks like a humanoid with venomous spines, so Ascended beings could theoretically also be humanoids with extra apendages (like Valeeva's spines or Aatrox's wings) but are just more commonly animals.
Second, we know Aatrox is trying to morph his vessel into looking as close to his former appearance as possible and it's implied he envies Kayle since she resembles himself as an Ascended. Kayle is an angelic human with wings, plus I feel Aatrox would try to reform himself with animal traits if he had them, but instead he looks, again, like a human with wings. Also there's the metaphors with Darkin being fallen gods, and the Darkin (mostly Aatrox and Rhaast) looking like demons, and that fits the trope of the fallen angel, you get the point, Aatrox is basically meant to be Satan so it works for him to be a corrupted angel.
Rhaast: Goat
Tumblr media
This is one I've seen a few other people headcanon, and it comes from one of Kayn's taunts as the Shadow Assassin where he calls the enemy a "two-legged goat" which is so oddly specific and I can't find anything it could be referencing, so the theory is he's taunting his opponent by comparing them to Rhaast, who as SA, Kayn has already defeated. I would also like to mention that Kayn's baggy pants paired with Rhaast's hooved feet and horns give him a satyr-like silhouette.
On the more symbolic side, goats are often associated with the devil (again, Darkin are based off demons) and to death and the occult in a similar way a scythe is despite both being common things found on a farm; they both seem innocent until put in the right contexts, which is perfectly ironic for a violent being like Rhaast.
Varus: Lizard
Tumblr media
In his short comic, we see a vague fanged head that wasn't shown when just Kai and Valmar walked these same stairs, so some theorized that this is what Varus looked like before being trapped. To me, the head looks most like it's reptilian. He could also be a snake or even a dragon, but in Runeterra we already have a snake Ascended with Naganeka and a humanoid dragon with Shyvana so I went with a lizard since it felt the most unique.
Naafiri: Feline
I remember seeing some people guess she used to be a cat when one of her teasers said that her becoming a hound was "ironic", and felines are seen as the opposite of canines. That's pretty much where the evidence ends, I'm just going based off vibes that maybe she was a big cat like a panther or a tiger.

Lux Voice Update concept:
First Move:
“The future can be bright, so long as we let hope live.”
“Come on, we’ve got a job to do.”
“In the name of magic, I shall punish the wicked!”
Long move:
“The people of Terbisia need me. Until I’m certain we can live without fear, I can’t return to Demacia with clear conscience.”
“The world might have darkness, but there’s still a lot of light if we go looking.”
First encounter:
“Have we met?”
“It’s not too late to leave.”
“I’d rather not blast you, so you can go.”
Joke response:
*Snort of laughter* “Okay, okay, that got me.”
Taunt response:
“I’ve been more afraid of my aunt than you.”
Killing:
(General):
“Go to the light. It can’t harm you…”
“I’m sorry, but it was the only way.”
“It had to be done…”
Recall:
“Be right back!”
“Starting to dim, got to brighten myself up!
Death:
“No…”
“Wait…”
“Sorry…”
Respawn:
(Stressed.) “If that happens to me one more time, I’m going to start blasting! Kidding, kidding…” *sigh*
“Woah! I’m… okay?”
“That was… dark.” *Nervous giggling.*
Character specific dialogue:
First encounter:
Annie: “A magic teddy bear? Now I’m getting jealous!”
Ezreal: *To herself* “Just ignore him, maybe he’ll leave.”
Fiora: *Imitating her accent* “En Guard, Miss Laurent!”
“Do you do anything besides fight?”
Galio: “Hey, sleepyhead! I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve grown up a lot since we last spoke. Three inches, to be precise.”
Garen: “…This is awkward.”
Jarvan: “You better keep an eye on those mageseekers.”
Jinx: “Have we met before? There’s something familiar.’
Katarina: “You might’ve helped me, but I’ve got my eye on you.”
Quinn: “Hi Quinn, hi Valor!”
Ryze: “If I win, could you teach me some rune spells? Please?”
Shyvana: “Has Jarvan ever ridden you into battle? What? I’m curious.”
Smoulder: “Aw, a little baby dragon!”
“I know someone who would love you!”
Sylas: “What do you want now?”
“Don’t you have enough magic?”
Mages:
“If you get tired of fighting, I know somewhere you can stay.”
Taunt:
Crystal Rose: “Oh, I remember going to royal balls. So many would-be suitors.” *shivering sound.*
Ezreal: “I’m flattered but you’re really, REALLY not my type.”
Garen: “I’m not just your kid sister anymore.”
Jinx: “I think I had a dream about you? Uh, that’s not weird to say, is it?”
Sentinel skins: “Sentinels of Light? Mind if I tryout?”
Katarina: “Have you and Garen made it past first base? Come oooon, tell me!”
Zoe: “You can have that Ezreal guy. Please, I’m begging you.”
Taunt Response:
Garen: (playfully) “Don’t be mean, Garen!”
Katarina: “Wait till I tell Garen about that!”
Nocturne: “Big talk for a shadow.”
Kill:
Ezreal: “Take a hint! Honestly…”
Garen: No, no, no, I’m sorry, I’m… *sigh*
Jinx: “…Why did you look so happy when I blasted you?”
Ryze: “Looks like I win.”
Sentinels: “Did I pass? …Oh. Hm. Too bright?”
Sylas: “The future will be bright. I just wish you could see it.”
——
Joke: “What’s a double rainbow? Ah, well… give me a minute, um…”
(Second time.)
“Well, a "double rainbow" is a phenomenon of optics that displays a spectrum of light due to the sun shining on droplets of moisture in the atmosphere. Does that explain it?”
(Third time in quick succession.)
“I’m not saying it again. Sorry.”

Canon & Uncanon (Mainly Couples) Things In League of Legends
(Hetero): Xayah-Rakan Senna-Lucian Ashe-Tryndamere Exes:  Illaoi-GP *Viego-Isolde (like.. they WERE married but doesn’t she hate him for bringing her back to life? Like idk what their dynamic is. Divorced? Idfk) LGBTQ:  Vi-Caitlyn Leona-Diana Single Pringles:  Literally everyone else I didnt mention Single Fruity Pringles:  Rell (Bisexual) Neeko (Lesbian) Canon (Runeterra) Crushes:  Ezreal => Lux* (he also has a flirty lines with Xayah, “Well hello, Xayah. You should know I’m pro-Vastayan Rights.”  To Rakan, “So... Rakan, how serious are you and Xayah? Just asking.” Dont know if I’d consider that a crush though) Zoe => Ezreal Neeko => Nidalee, Shyvana, Xayah* (”Neeko might have a thing for birds.. and bird people) Ekko => Jinx (at least apparently he used to, “before she started talking to the gun”) Rumble => Tristana *Lux HAD a crush on Sylas... until he tried to kill Jarvan IV, Garen and then her for not joining his rebellion. (at least that’s how it reads to me)
Canon Relationships in other Skin Universes:  Zed-Karma (Odyssey, they’re Exes) Ekko-Ezreal (Pulsefire)  Ezreal-Lux (Battle Academia) Yasuo-Riven (Dawnbringer/Nightbringer) Legends of Runeterra:  Garen-Katarina (have multiple interactions talking about secret rendezvous) Nami (Pansexual - Legends of Runeterra, writer confirms two of the cards are her boyfriend and girlfriend. Good for her ♥) Kalista-Ledros (lovers) Shyvana-Jarvan
Unsure/Unconfirmed/Scrapped Before Release/ No Longer Canon: Shaco (bi): scrapped, journal of justice Pantheon-Leona: (scrapped, got retconned after Pantheon rework)  Twisted Fate-Graves (scrapped before release: they were supposed to be in a relationship before release but Riot censored it to just “partners in crime.” Community mainly considers them canon anyway.) Twisted Fate-Evelynn (old journal of justice relationship) Janna-Summoner (journal of justice relationship and “summoners” arent a thing anymore) Taliyah being trans (another instance of scrapping before release, but they still have the line with Neeko saying to her, “Neeko isn’t the only one who changes” so like??? make up your minds, rito???) Taric ..  Riot’s never stated his sexuality (but a lot of people like to headcanon that he is Gay or Pansexual). Seems like the Taric subreddit just thinks of him as a chad who’s too beautiful for anyone (so Asexual?). Fiora: So.. some redditors look at Swain’s line after collecting her soul,  "She's spurned so many suitors. A wonder they did not see why." hinting that she’s either lesbian or aro.  Syndra-Zed (he’s in the backing animation of her withered rose skin, old ship that really doesnt get any love or attention)  Varus: has two gay lovers in him but I dont think the champion in game is gay. Popular Uncanon ships:  SG Lux & SG Jinx Aphelios-Sett  Taric-Ezreal (dont see this ship too much these days though) Zed-Shen Warwick-Soraka Soraka-Ezreal Nami-Nautilus (according to my bf this was a thing waaay back in the day) Kayn-Zed Evelynn-Akali Kai’sa-Seraphine Ahri-Kai’sa Literally everyone in kda with each other, just a biiiiiiiiiig orgy fest Seraphine-Rell Nami-Jhin Sona-Jhin Coven Evelynn - Coven Ahri Coven Evelynn - Coven Morgana Sona-Thresh Sona-Mordekaiser Ashe-Sejuani Kai’sa-Sivir (thank @/ichiro-artosaki) Quinn-Darius Akali-Shen (apparently they didnt have as big of an age gap before her rework, in old lore she was the fist of shadow instead of now her mom?) Ashe-Draven (you can thank @/ask-le-ali-di-demacia for both of these ships) Sona-Lee Sin Sona-Kayn (also @/ask-le-ali-di-demacia) Sona-Ezreal Sona-Jarvan (sona is the katara of league and she’s been shipped with literally everyone at this point) Janna-Yasuo Riven-Yasuo Odyssey Kayn-Odyssey Jinx Heartpuncher Vi-Heartpiercer Fiora Talon-Katarina (ooooold ship that no one draws anymore)  Kai’sa-Ezreal (literally only because of the Awaken Cinematic) Sylas-Lux Zoe-Kayn Ahri-Yasuo Ahri-Yone Lillia-Yone Zac-Riven (apparently when Zac was released a dude, nielspeterdejong on deviantart, commissioned a WHOOOOLE bunch of riven-zac fanart.) Sona-Kayn (kinda because of Odyssey, Kayn searching the galaxy to find her for some reason) Shadow Assassin Kayn-Shadow Evelynn Kayn-Akali (though she does flirt with him in the Zed comic) Ori-Blitz bc robots Veigar-Lulu (I think this ship is absolutely adorable)  Ahri-Sona (saw this a loooong time ago, think it was when they were both like the poster girls of league) Neeko-Nidalee Nidalee-Rengar Kalista-Thresh Irelia-Kayn Swain-Leblanc (someone mentioned that there’s hints in their lore that they’re screwing but idk)  Swain-Lux (knew one person that drew this and I liked their art... sadly havent seen them posting very often since they were outed for tracing)  Viktor-Jayce Gwen-Shaco (Apparently some people were shipping them when she first came out?) Gwen-Viego Viego-Akshan Xayah-Sett Elise-Zyra (ooooold ship, I thought they were cute) Akali-Irelia Talon-Quinn  (BASICALLY literally every champion gets shipped with another at some point)
Adding in this take from Queens of League reddit & AphroQiyana on Twitter:

Neeko’s sexuality was confirmed EVERYWHERE, just not in the client (because countries like China & Russia; wlw & mlm relationships are banned)
Tumblr media
Source: literally just google neeko lgbtq
Tumblr media
Source: AphroQiyana Riot says they’re going to put more LGBTQ STORIES out there (can’t make more lgbtq champs bc China) but uk, it is what it is.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, SHIP WHAT YOU WANT TO SHIP!~ So what if it’s not canon? THAT’S ALL I GOTTA SAY. (also PLEASE LET ME KNOW ABOUT YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE SHIPS!!!)

5e Zac, the Secret Weapon build (League of Legends)
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Christian Fell. Made for Riot Games.)
No one:
Literally no one:
@tigerkirby215: “HEY FUCKERS WHO WANTS A ZAC BUILD?!”
Full disclosure: I watched Dorans and Dragon’s video for Zac and while it’s really well done (like really well done. I honestly suggest you watch it) I felt like it took a bit of an interesting direction. Ds&D and I have always had different ideas for our builds and I think with the release of Tasha’s there’s actually a lot of interesting new directions to take Zac in.
Also spoiler alert but this build is the most jank-ass fucking shit I have ever made but it strangely works really well? Like I literally sat on this build for two months debating if I should even post it. Also Zac’s a grappler, because of course he is.
GOALS
There's plenty of me to go around - Zac stretches and bounces and changes his shape more-or-less at will.
Why thanks; I do work out - Zac is one of those “hold you down for 10 seconds total in a teamfight” types of junglers.
I'm not as squishy as I look - Of course to be a big bundle of green goo we’ll need to be big. Like, really big.
RACE
END ME I’M MAKING A BUGBEAR! :D
Okay to be fair Bugbear hate is kinda overblown, especially by yours truly. You get +2 to Strength and a +1 to Dexterity as well as Darkvision and several other useful traits: you have a Powerful Build to carry more stuff, for one. You are also Sneaky and get proficiency with Stealth, which is nice because if you launch a Surprise Attack you can do an extra 2d6 damage.
But of course the main trait of a Bugbear is their Long-Limbed bodies. All your melee attacks have a 5 foot longer range, which is obviously important to make Stretching Strikes!
Custom Lineage: If you’re insistent on making a custom “goo creature” race with Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything rules here are my suggestions: make yourself Medium (yeah duh) and give yourself proficiency with the Athletics skill. Increase your Strength by 2 and take the Skilled Expert feat for Expertise in Athletics along with a +1 in Wisdom. You will have an uneven DEX score but I dunno just go for Athlete or something later in this build.
ABILITY SCORES
15; WISDOM - Braum isn’t the only champion who believes the heart is the strongest muscle, as if you’d read Zac’s lore he is actually quite a compassionate soul. Also we need Wisdom for our main ability.
14; CONSTITUTION - Zac is a tanky boy, so up the tankiness!
13; DEXTERITY - When you can stretch and squeeze like silly putty dexterity comes naturally. We need that dexterity to jump over walls, among other things.
12; STRENGTH - A lot of it is elastic strength, but if you’re going to throw Cho’gath into Shyvana you do also need upper body strength.
10; CHARISMA - He’s a nice guy when you get to know him, but Zac’s also a bunch of Zaun sewer goo.
8; INTELLIGENCE - Living in the sewers and then later being raised as a weapon means you don’t know any math, science, or history.
BACKGROUND
Zac did grow up in the streets, but the skills from the Urchin background don’t fit him well so we’ll be modifying it heavily. Take proficiency in Acrobatics to squash and stretch as well as Perception to keep those wards up. You can pick your choice of languages or tools because Zac kinda... doesn’t do much other than fight? I mean he’s literally called “the Secret Weapon” what do you want from me?
But your background feature of City Secrets is very useful for traveling the streets of Zaun, letting you find your way around alleys and jungle gank paths to travel through the city twice as fast as the average person! "Put some spring in your step."
Tumblr media
(Artist unknown. Made for Riot Games.)
THE BUILD
LEVEL 1 - MONK 1
Been awhile since we’ve visited the good ol’ Monk class eh? Well you can grab Athletics finally, as well as Insight to know if someone’s worth clobbering. You also get proficiency with an artisan’s tool or musical instrument, and I mean... Zac still doesn’t have much lore.
But how about some class features? Monks get Unarmored Defense equal to their Wisdom plus their Dexterity, for 14 AC total. Would medium armor be better? Yes, but you can’t wear armor if you want to use Martial Arts! Martial Arts gives you a variety of benefits: you can punch with DEX or STR, your punches are now a d4 (and will scale as you get levels), and if you punch with your Action you can punch with a Bonus Action after the fact!
LEVEL 2 - MONK 2
Second level Monks get Ki points to use for a variety of features: Flurry of Blows lets you attack twice with your Bonus Action instead of once, Patient Defense lets you dodge as a Bonus Action, and Step of the Wind lets you Dash or Disengage as a Bonus Action. An important thing to mention about Step of the Wind is that it doubles your jump distance, for those big Elastic Slingshot jumps!
You can also put on some boots and get some Unarmored Movement. 10 more feet to be exact!
I guess I’m also obliged to mention Dedicated Weapon from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything which lets you turn any weapon you’re proficient in into a Monk weapon as long as it’s not Heavy or Special. This will be important later but it’s not exactly in-character for Zac.
LEVEL 3 - MONK 3
Third level Monks get to choose their Monastic Tradition and Way of the Astral Self will give you some long stretchy limbs! As a bonus action you can spend 1 Ki to summon Arms of the Astral Self. When you do so, each creature of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of you must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take force damage equal to two rolls of your Martial Arts die due to your Unstable Matter.
Your arms will stay up for 10 minutes and give the following benefits:
You can use your Wisdom modifier in place of your Strength modifier when making Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
You can use the spectral arms to make unarmed strikes, which has the following benefits:
The reach of the arms is 5 feet greater than normal, which stacks with your Bugbear arms. 15 foot reach with extra stretchy arms!
The unarmed strikes you make with the arms can use your Wisdom modifier in place of your Strength or Dexterity modifier for the attack and damage rolls, and their damage type is force.
You can also absorb some blows with Deflect Missiles. When you are hit by a ranged weapon attack you can use your reaction to reduce the damage by 1d10 + your DEX mod + your monk level. If you reduce the damage to 0, you can catch the missile. You can then spend 1 ki point to throw it back as part of the same reaction. You make this attack with proficiency, regardless of your weapon proficiencies, and the missile counts as a monk weapon for the attack, which has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet.
Tasha’s Cauldron of Everyone also gave Monks the Ki-Fueled Attack ability which pretty much doesn’t impact you in the slightest.
LEVEL 4 - MONK 4
4th level Monks get an Ability Score Improvement but we’re instead going to grab the Skilled Expert feat. You can increase your Wisdom by 1 and grab proficiency in Survival for optimal jungle clear. But what we’re mainly here for is to make our hands extra sticky with expertise in Athletics! Is the build starting to make sense now?
You can also land safely after an Elastic Slingshot jump thanks to Slow Fall, reducing fall damage by 5 times your Monk level. If you want to keep yourself in the fight then Quickened Healing (also from TCoE, because that book really likes giving new Monk features) will let you take advantage of Cell Division for 2 Ki points, healing you for a number rolled on your Martial Arts die plus your Proficiency bonus. It’s not much but in a pinch it might save you!
LEVEL 5 - MONK 5
5th level Monks get an Extra Attack, so you can punch twice with your action, and then punch some more with your Bonus Action! You can also bring some heavy CC into the party with Stunning Strike; if you hit an enemy in melee you can force a Constitution save or stun them! Yes actual honest-to-god League of Legends stun!
Oh and because Tasha’s Cauldron really wanted to buff the Monk you get Focused Aim, letting you use up to 3 Ki points to increase your roll to hit, at a 2:1 ratio. (1 Ki point = +2 to hit)
Tumblr media
(Artwork by SemLimit on DeviantArt.)
LEVEL 6 - BARBARIAN 1
Jumping over to Barbarian, land of the true tanks. Barbarians get Unarmored Defense based on Constitution that we won’t be using but I’m obliged to mention anyways. Of course what we’re here for is Rage which will augment you in a number of ways: you’ll resist Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage and will do more damage with Strength-based attacks (which you probably won’t be making.) But the most important feature is this line right here:
You have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
You know what’s a Strength check? Athletics! So even if you use Wisdom for it you’ll still have Advantage on top of Expertise! And Athletics is used for grappling! At least that’s how I’d rule it, but talk to your DM just to make sure they’ll let this dopey shit into their game.
LEVEL 7 - BARBARIAN 2
Second level Barbarians can let themselves go with Reckless Attack. Your Unstable Matter will give you advantage on your attack at the cost of giving enemies advantage to hit you.
You also get Danger Sense for advantage on Dexterity saves against effects you can see coming. Is a Jinx rocket heading your way? Slingshot out of there!
LEVEL 8 - BARBARIAN 3
Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything gave Barbarians Primal Knowledge for a free skill proficiency from the Barbarian list, so take Intimidation I guess because you are a huge freaky slime guy.
Third level Barbarians get to choose their Primal Path and guess what? It’s Totem Warrior time! As a Spirit Seeker you can cast Speak With Animals and Beast Sense as a Ritual but we all know that’s not what we’re here for. What we’re really here for is the Totem Spirit of the Bear. You can now resist all damage while Raging, with the exception of Psychic damage. Hey there has to be %health damage to deal with tanks after all. (Now if only they’d nerf Grievous Wounds.)
LEVEL 9 - MONK 6
This will be our last Monk level; sad I know. But it’s worth it for the Visage of the Astral Self. You can use a Bonus Action and a Ki point to summon the visage. (And can do it while summoning your arms.) While the spectral visage is present, you gain several benefits:
Astral Sight lets you see through magical (and nonmagical) darkness up to 120 feet.
Wisdom of the Spirit gives you advantage on Wisdom (Insight) and Charisma (Intimidation) checks.
And Word of the Spirit lets you either whisper in team chat to a creature of your choice that you can see within 60 feet of you, or shout in all chat so that everyone within 600 feet can hear you.
Your regular fists are also considered magical thanks to Ki-Empowered Strikes, and you get 5 more feet of Unarmored Movement! "Woohoo!"
Tumblr media
(Artwork by Dragonflamebg on DeviantArt.)
LEVEL 10 - FIGHTER 1
Teamfight time? Team Fighter time! First level Fighters get a Fighting Style and since you’re punching people your only real option is Superior Technique, giving you a d6 Combat Superiority die to use on a Battle Master Manuever. That Manuever shall be Grappling Strike, letting you grapple as a Bonus Action after punching someone for some Stretching Strikes!
You can also heal with Cell Division assuming the enemy team doesn’t stack Grievous Wounds thanks to Second Wind; it’s a d10 plus your Fighter level. "Keep it together."
LEVEL 11 - FIGHTER 2
Second level Fighters get Action Surge for even more punching! This will be more important in like, two levels.
LEVEL 12 - FIGHTER 3
Third level Fighters get to choose their Martial Archetype and for some crowd control in a teamfight Battle Master is a great choice. You are a Student of War which means more tool proficiencies which make no sense because Zac has no lore woo! But of course what we’re mainly here for is Combat Superiority: you have four d8 Superiority Die (plus a d6 one from your Fighting Style) which you can use on a variety of Maneuvers:
Trip Attack is good if you want to bounce, forcing the target you hit to make a Strength save or fall over!
Distracting Strike is like stunning the target in the sense that it gives your allies an opening, but unlike Trip Attack you don’t have to force a saving throw. (Instead Distracting Strike just works after you hit them!)
And if you think your arms aren’t stretchy enough already? Boom; Lunging Attack for 20 foot reach!
LEVEL 13 - FIGHTER 4
4th level Fighters get an Ability Score Improvement: hey it’s everyone’s favorite feat Grappler! You have advantage on attacks against enemies you grappled, and if you’re grappling someone you can then pin them to hold them in place!
Now pinning someone you’ve grappled does take an action but here’s where Action Surge comes in: turn 1? Grab them. Turn 2? Pin them! Easy!
LEVEL 14 - FIGHTER 5
5th level Fighters get an Extra Attack... which you already have. "I hate it when this happens."
LEVEL 15 - FIGHTER 6
Hey more Ability Score Improvements! Want all the fun of a high Constitution score without the Constitution? Look no further than the Tough feat: it gives you +2 HP per level for some big gains!
Tumblr media
(Artwork by GisAlmeida on DeviantArt.)
LEVEL 16 - FIGHTER 7
7th level Fighters get to Know Your Enemy: by spending a minute studying someone (IE looking at the scoreboard) you can learn if an enemy is superior, inferior, or equal to you in a number of areas described by the ability.
You also get one more Combat Superiority die and learn two more Maneuvers: Goading Attack will make it harder for enemies to hit your friends (and it works against Tier 4 enemies who likely resist fears), and Disarming Attack will let you stick your hand to your opponent’s weapon to make them drop it!
LEVEL 17 - FIGHTER 8
8th level means more ASIs and I’m starting to think ignoring all your stats was a bad idea. More Wisdom means better punches, better grabs, and better AC.
LEVEL 18 - FIGHTER 9
9th level Fighters get Indomitable, letting them reroll a failed saving throw once per Long Rest. Regardless of what you roll on the new die however you have to use the new result. This can be used on Death saves to try to keep alive a little longer thanks to Cell Division.
LEVEL 19 - FIGHTER 10
10th level Battle Masters get Improved Combat Superiority. Your superiority die are d10s now; even the one from your Fighting Style! You do also learn more Maneuvers but honestly? We got just about everything that we need already. If you’ve hit level 19 playing Zac League of Legends then you deserve to make some choices of your own.
LEVEL 20 - FIGHTER 11
Our final level is the 11th level of Fighter for an Extra Attack that does stack! That means you have 3 attacks total and one extra from Martial Arts!
FINAL BUILD
PROS
Beat up, or beat down? I'm flexible - No matter how you look at it 4 attacks per round is great, especially since you can give yourself Advantage and boost your damage output with Battle Master Maneuvers.
Pick on someone your own size - If everything goes well you should have a solid 200 health by level 20! Definitely nothing to sneeze at, especially with Rage giving you resistance to almost everything and Second Wind letting you heal yourself!
This is gonna get messy - You’ve got a +16 to Athletics checks for Grappling when using your Astral Arms, and can give yourself Advantage or add Superiority die to your Grapple checks. Do I need to explain that that’s really good?
CONS
Don't push your luck, champ - None of your stats are maxed out, and that’s bad. Your hit modifier isn’t great, your Battle Master saving throw is low, but most importantly your AC is really bad. Big health is nice but not being hit is also very helpful. Just saying if you have the chance to go for Point Buy I’d take it.
I never skip breakfast - A small pool of Ki combined with limited Maneuver die means that you’re running on some very potent fumes. Frequent short rests will be needed to make the most out of this build.
These jerks don't know when to quit! - Grappling builds have the ever-constant problem of falling off in the late game when most foes simply can’t be grabbed. This build honestly peaks around level 13 and just falls off from there. This is definitely one of my builds that I think works better in a low level campaign.
But if you want something unique that works well early here’s your build! Big reach to hold everyone in place so your party can beat them up. Playing the CC tank might not be that glorious but it’s a job someone’s gotta do. And remember: "It's not how much you can lift. It's how good you look!"

Ruination Rewrite: Shadow Isles
Shadow Isles Part I
The light of the Wayfinder fades and is almost instantly replaced by an oppressive gloom. Though you have witnessed many Harrowings by this point, they all pale in comparison to the sight before you: The Shadow Isles, birthplace of the Ruination.
“I hate this place already.”
“I don’t suppose we could try and recruit more Sentinels first?”
Lucian: “Keep your nerves about you, Rook. The undead here are worse than anything you’ve seen so far, and they can smell fear a mile away.”
Diana: “A land trapped in endless night, yet obscured from the Moon’s pale glow… One can scarcely imagine what manner of horrors might lurk here.”
Graves: “Pardon the interruption, but there are a heck of a lot of graves here… And I ain’t talkin’ about myself.”
Sure enough, a cursory glance of your surroundings reveals that the Wayfinder has brought you to a massive graveyard, with rows upon rows of headstones stretching out all around you. Upon closer inspection, you realize that a number of the graves even appear to be recent.
“Who dug all of these?”
“Whose graves are these?”
??? response 1: “That would be me.”
??? response 2: “Mostly travelers, like yourselves.”
The Sentinels wheel around to point their weapons at the source of the voice, only to find an old, hunched man with a shovel staring back at you, unfazed.
Vayne: “Hmph. So this the kind of ‘horror’ lurking on the Shadow Isles? Should be easy enough to handle.”
Shen: “Wait! This man… His soul is touched by the Mist, but he has not been turned by not. Not wholly.”
Yorick: “That’s right. I’m just a humble gravedigger. My name is Yorick Mori, last gravedigger of the Blessed Isles.”
Riven: “The Blessed Isles? Where’s that?”
Yorick: “Before this place became the Shadow Isles that you all know, it was a place of learning and prosperity: the Blessed Isles. When that mad king came, he unleashed the Ruination, corrupting every living thing in this place with undeath… Almost every living thing.”
Suddenly, a wicked figure appears behind Yorick, speaking out in a voice that somehow calms and terrifies you at the same time.
???: “Join us, Yorick. Cast aside those measly droplets and be one with us.”
Jayce: “Look out!”
Yorick: “Don’t fret. The Maiden has whispered in my ear for a long time, but these ‘measly droplets,’ the Waters of Life, keep me sane.”
You stare at the Maiden uneasily, though the more you do, the more strangely familiar she seems.
Lucian: “Look, this is all fascinating, but we don’t have time to stand around and talk! We’re here for that Ruined Creep, to bring him down once and for all! If you know where he is, old man, you’d better speak up.”
Yorick: “You want to challenge him with these measly numbers? I can see you carry Relicstone, but that alone will hardly be enough.”
Akshan: “Do not count us out yet, old man! Akshan is here, and that makes up for at least a few missing soldiers.”
Yorick examines your group briefly, as though sizing you up. He strokes his beard in thought, then turns his gaze to a large tower in the distance.
Yorick: “…It is a fool’s errand, but perhaps this is the only chance I’ll get.”
Olaf: “What’s he on about now?”
Lucian: “Enough. If you’re not gonna help us, old man, then-”
Yorick: “You’re not the only one who wishes to bring an end to the king. Since the Ruination began, I’ve been amassing corpses here, using what little influence I have to keep them from rising in his name. You say you want to storm the king’s throne, but to do that…”
Yorick raises his spade and slams it into the ground. All around you, the graves burst open and grotesque creatures break free from the dirt.
Yorick: “You will need an army of your own!”
At Yorick’s command, the living corpses all seemed to stand at attention, awaiting his orders. You guess that they number somewhere in the hundreds, but you can’t be sure.
“So we’re going to fight the army of the undead… With our own army of the undead?”
“Lucian, what do the rules say about this? Can corpse monsters be Sentinels? What about old men with creepy ghost ladies on their backs?”
Lucian: “…Frankly, at this point, all that matters is findin’ that bastard and gettin’ Senna back. Oh, and Gwen, of course.”
Yorick: “Then the time is at hand! On your command, warriors of the light, we march!”
Lucian: “Alright then. Sentinels! Corpses! Let’s move!”
Shadow Isles Part II
With the Sentinels and Yorick’s ghouls at your side, you storm the gates of Helia, only to be greeted by Viego’s twisted forces. The ruins of the city quickly become a battlefield filled with screams of the undead.
Lucian: “Sentinels, stick together! Remember your training!”
Though clearly not as experienced as Senna, Lucian still does his best to take command of the situation while fending off the undead that get too close.
Lucian: “Olaf, Jayce, you two clear us a path! Graves, you and I will cover them! Akshan, Vayne, Rengar, you three scout ahead! The rest of you, stick with Rookie and try to keep him safe!”
The Sentinels spring into action at Lucian’s command, clearing their own respective paths through the battlefield. You linger behind with Riven, Shen and Diana serving as your protectors, cutting down the undead who dare to get too close.
Riven: “Don’t worry, Rookie, we’ve got you covered!”
In that moment, an inhuman roar cries out from somewhere above you. You look up to the sound of wings beating and your heart sinks at the sight of a familiar wyvern.
“That’s Shyvana!”
“How did she escape the dragonguard!?”
Shyvana soars across the battlefield and lets loose a stream of harrowed flame, scorching the entire battlefield with reckless abandon. As the flames draws near, Shen focused and conjures his spirit blade to form a protective barrier around you and the other Sentinels. Shyvana’s fire passes over you harmlessly, though you can still feel the raw hear even through the barrier.
Shen: “Is everyone unharmed?”
“I’m good, thanks!”
“If Shyvana is here, then…”
As if on cue, another figure descends from the sky, crashing down onto the battlefield like a meteor. Your heart sinks further as Diana speaks the name that’s on your mind.
Diana: “Pantheon… So Atreus has lost control once again. I… Look out!”
Diana shoves you behind her and wraps herself in a barrier of light just as a massive swirlseed slams into her. Dream dust scatters around Diana and you feel yourself stumble from breathing it in.
Riven: “Rookie! Stay awake, alright?”
You struggle to remain conscious as Lillia’s dream dust starts to take hold, but just as your eyelids are about to close, Riven delivers a sharp slap across your face. In an instant, you feel yourself snap to alertness.
“I’m awake!”
“Ow! Thanks, but ow!”
Riven: “Glad to see that worked.”
Your relief is short-lived as your eyes catch sight of another massive figure orbiting the battlefield: The Dead Pool, held aloft by clouds of Black Mist. At the ship’s helm stands Gangplank, though you recognize three other figures beside him.
“That’s Draven!”
“That’s Tryndamere!”
“That’s Viktor!”
Draven and Tryndamere both leap from the ship’s prow, dropping to the battlefield without care. Viktor, meanwhile, seems to direct a number of drones powered by Black Mist to follow suit. You soon realize that Yorick’s girls are diminishing in number, while your Sentinel allies are steadily pushed back.
Lucian: “Damn it! Everyone regroup! We have to-”
Whatever Lucian was about to say was cut off by the sound of explosions. The Dead Pool’s cannons let loose a relentless volley upon the battlefield, scattering the Sentinels in all directions. One shot lands especially close to you, slamming you into a nearby building.
Your vision blurs and your ears ring as you try to regain your footing. You feel a large hand suddenly wrapping around your neck and hoisting you up. You recognize the face of the man holding you, but his eyes now glow with an unearthly light.
Fetu: “Hmph. I can’t imagine why the Wayfinder would have chosen the likes of you.”
“Fetu?”
“You’re the Sentinel from Buhru…”
Fetu: “So you remember me? Then you remember that you left me to die. Me and my comrades. We held out for as long as we could, but we were no match for the Black Mist. No one is.”
Suddenly, something sharp pierces your stomach. You look down to see one of Fetu’s blades lodged deep in your gut. Pain fills your body as you cough up blood.
Fetu: “And you, you will share our fate, young Sentinel.”
You fall to the ground as your life begins to fade. Tendrils of Black Mist creep around your body, sweeping over you until they engulf you completely. Your vision fades and darkness consumes you as you take your final breath…
Shadow Isles Part III
You linger silently in the darkness. You feel nothing, hear nothing, see nothing. Your thoughts and memories are scattered. Who are you? What are you? These are the answers your mind seeks, but is unable to grasp.
???: “…me?”
???: “Can you hear me?”
You hear a voice calling out to you. It feels familiar, yet you cannot discern why.
???: “Can you hear me?”
“I hear you.”
“Why are you?”
A glimmer of light emerges from the darkness, growing brighter in your line of sight. The light takes on the vague likeness of person, but you can’t discern the details.
???: “I’ve been with you all along. I am your guide, but I am also the cause of your anguish.”
The figure moves closer. You can vaguely discern that the voice belongs to a woman, but her face remains obscured. You think you feel fingers running against your cheek.
???: “This all began with my untimely death, which set my husband on this twisted path. He was a good man, once, but the Black Mist brings out the worst in one’s soul. Pain. Regret. Anger. That’s all my husband is now. I want to bring him back, as well as all those corrupted by his influence.”
“I don’t understand…”
“Does that mean you’re…?”
???: “I’m not who I once was. I am only a fragment of her, hidden away with Relic you carry. It was I who chose you, because I sensed you had a good heart. The Wayfinder was a tool crafted to help bring the world together in its time of need, and I offered what little power I had to that end. Now, I offer that power to you, young Sentinel. Though it means revealing myself to my wayward love, I am prepared to take that risk. I… Am prepared to place my faith in you.”
Suddenly, the darkness around you starts to fade. Your thoughts become less scattered. Feeling returns to your limbs.
???: “Our time is nearing an end. I can offer you my strength, but victory will depend on your own. You are not a warrior like your allies. Yours is the power to touch the hearts of those around you and draw out the best in them. Go, young Sentinel, and become a beacon in this dark time…”
The figure fades away and her voice falls silent. Slowly but surely, you climb to your feet, your memories slowly returning.
Akshan: “Ah, good! You are awake!”
“What happened?”
“Where is everyone?”
Akshan response 1: “Well, you were slain, but I have restored you to life! Do you still doubt the Absolver’s power?”
Akshan response 2: “While you were dying, everyone else has been fighting their hardest. Alas, I fear may we require a hasty retreat, which is why-”
Just then, Akshan’s gaze moves to the Wayfinder at your side. You look down to see that a segment in the base of the Relic has opened up. Hallowed Mist pours from the Wayfinder, and you recall your unusual encounter with the figure in your dream.
“Akshan! I know what we have to do!”
“Akshan! I need you to carry me!”
Akshan: “Oh? I am not quite certain what is happening, but I like the look that is in your eye! Very-well, hold on tightly to me, and try not to fall!”
Akshan grapples you up to the roof of a nearby building and sets you down. From this vantage point, you can see most of the battlefield around you. As you gather your bearings however, Shyvana sudden swoops down and lands before you, nearly shattering the roof.
Shyvana: “Burn all in dragonfire!”
As she prepares to engulf you in flame, you raise the Wayfinder and focus. Tendrils of Hallowed Mist pour forth and wrap around the half-dragon, stopping Shyvana in her tracks.
“Is that what your friends would want?”
“This isn’t you, Shyvana!”
Shyava: “Silence! I… I am…”
“You’re not a monster! You’re a soldier! Jerik said you’re the best he’s ever seen! Is this how a member of the Dragonguard should act!?”
“You’re not a monster! You’re the friend and protector of Demacia’s king! Didn’t you swear to defend him!?”
Shyvana: “Grrr…. RRRRAAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!”
Primal fire engulfs Shyvana and her dragon form vanishes. Before you stands a woman with purple scales and crimson armor. Her hands and eyes burn with flames imbued with Hallowed Mist.
Shyvana: “I will never forget my oath! This Ruined King thinks he can tame a dragon? I’ll show him what happens to the enemies of Demacia!”
Shyvana transforms again, kneeling her head down to you.
Shyvana: “Climb on my back, and hold tight!”
Akshan: “Aha! Wonderfully done, Rookie!”
You do as Shyvana tells you and climb onto her back. The half-dragon carries you into the air and over the battlefield as you cling for dear life. As you ascend, your eyes scan the battlefield to pick out those who have fallen under Viego’s influence.
Shadow Isles Part IV
*From here, the player may choose which Ruined champ to go for in which order.
>Pick Tryndamere
Shyvana descends toward the Barbarian King, surrounding him in a ring of Hallowed Dragonfire. Tryndamere looks up at you and cries out in fury, but you respond by angling your Wayfinder at him. Hallowed Mist shoots forth, striking Tryndamere in the chest.
“Tryndamere, calm down! Is this how a king should behave?”
“Are you a man or an animal!? Get ahold of yourself, Tryndamere!”
Tryndamere: “Rrrgh… Grah!”
“You’re supposed to be the king of the Avarosa! Why are you bowing down to a guy like Viego!?”
“I thought you were supposed to be a might warrior! How can you let a guy like Viego tell you what to do!?”
Tryndamere: “I… I… I’LL NEVER YIELD!!!!!”
The Black Mist scatters from Tryndamere as he lets out a cry of defiance. In its place, Hallow Mist wraps around his form, imbuing his blade with cleansing power.
Tryndamere: “I fear no man or monster! COME AT ME!”
Tryndamere charges back into the fray, cutting through flames and undead alike. Though rage still consumes him, you notice that his movements are more focused now, his rage directed toward his adversaries in the Black Mist.
Shyvana carries you back into the air to seek your next target.
>Pick Draven
You spot Draven standing atop the remnants of an old monument, looking rather bored with the battle around him. Only as you approach does he look up, his attention drawn by the sound of beating wings.
Draven: “Oh, here we go! This this should be good!”
Draven winds up to hurl one of his axes, but you beat him to the draw. Tendrils of Hallowed Mist shoot from your Wayfinder and cling to Draven’s body.
Draven: “Hey, what gives!?”
“Draven, I’ve always wanted to meet you, but not like this. What a let-down.”
“I never imagined the Glorious Executioner would turn into a bit-player for some undead king.”
Draven: “What’d you say?”
“Come on, you’re supposed to be the star of the show! Why are you playing second-fiddle to Viego?”
“Draven what would your fans think if they saw you like this? Are you really gonna let them down by borrowing Viego’s power?”
Draven: “Hey! Draven IS the life of the party! Just you watch, kid!”
The Black Mist around Draven vanishes as the Hallowed Mist takes its place. He turns and chucks both axes, bouncing them off a pair of flying wraiths. Then, with practiced ease, he catches both axes and laughs.
Draven: “Ha! How’d you like that? Don’t get too excited, though! I’m just warming up!”
You and Shyvana watch as Draven leaps into the fray, but neither of you stick around to watch the show. Instead, you quickly ascend and begin seeking your next target.
>Pick Lillia
You spot a lot figure hiding amidst the ruins and direct Shyvana to descend on them. Lillia cries out in surprise as the half-dragon crashes down behind her.
Lillia: “Eep!”
She turns around to try and attack with her branch, but tendrils of Hallowed Mist engulf her before she has the chance.
“Come on, Lillia, you’re too cute to be one of Viego’s flunkies! Be brave! Fight back!”
“Lillia, aren’t you supposed to be a guardian of dreams? How can you be siding with Viego?”
Lillia: “W-What? But… Viego’s dreams are… So beautiful…”
“Viego doesn’t dream, Lillia! Not anymore! The man you’re seeing died a long time ago!”
“Viego’s dreams may be pretty, but his reality is a nightmare! He’ll ruin dreams for everyone, forever!”
Lillia: “T-That’s awful! I… Eep!”
Lillia lets out a startled gasp as the scatters from her form, then calms down as Hallowed Mist takes its place.
Lillia: “Oh, what’s this? I… I see an even lovelier dream. Not of the past, but of the future: a bright future, where nobody has to be afraid anymore. I… I understand. I’ll help spread this dream! Maybe Mother Tree will like it, too!”
Lillia takes a deep breath and scampers off into the fray, doing her best to sooth the dreams of the wraiths. You and Shyvana ascend once more to search for those still under Viego’s control.
>Pick Pantheon
As you and Shyvana scan the crowd, a flaming spear soars through the air, grazing Shyvana’s scales. The halfdragon cries out and makes an uneasy land. You do the same as you lose your grip and fall to the ground. Just as you start regain your footing, though, you see a figure marching toward you, shield raised. You try to use the Wayfinder, but the Hallowed Mist glances off Pantheon’s shield.
The war god lunges at you, but you narrowly dodge to the side to avoid being impaled by the spear that’s magically returned to his hand. Before Pantheon can try again, however, Shyvana lunges, engaging the war god with tooth and claw. As they struggle, you see your chance, and try again. This time, the Hallowed Mist takes hold.
“Atreus! I know you’re in there! You have to fight it!”
“Some god you are, Pantheon! I like your human half way better!”
Pantheon: “…Ngh! S-Silence…”
Pantheon struggles to break free, but Shyvana aids in restraining him.
“You’re not a god or a slave! You’re a warrior!”
“Your time is over, war god! No one’s gonna pray to you now, especially not like this.”
Atreus: “My name… IS SOLDIER!”
Two voices cry out at once: Atreus in triumph, Pantheon in despair. The Black Mist is replaced by Celestial power once again.
Atreus: “By my spear, they will know war!”
Atreus moves in the blink of an air, raising his spear to shield you from the axe of undead minotaur. In the same motion, he impales the beast, felling them in an instant.
Atreus: “Go! Rally our comrades! This battle is not yet lost!”
You and Shyvana both nod in acknowledgement before taking to the skies again, searching for those who remain under Viego’s influence.
>Pick Viktor
You spot Viktor amidst a crowd of possessed drones, which seem to swarm around him like a protective barrier. The drones become hostile as they notice you, but Shyvana effortlessly scatters them with her fire. You spot Viktor kneeling in the flames, staring up at you through his metal mask.
Viktor: “Why? Why you deny progress? Why do you deny salvation?”
In response, you raised the Wayfinder and let Hallowed Mist wash over the Machine Herald, binding him in place.
“Viego’s not trying to save humanity, Viktor! He’s trying to destroy it!”
“You call this progress? Turning people into a bunch of mindless wraiths hungry for souls!?”
Viktor: “Ngh… Illogical… Your argument is…”
“Viego’s a man driven by emotion, not logic! Open your eyes, Viktor!”
“Viego doesn’t care about humanity! He just wants to make everyone suffer!”
Viktor: “I see… It seems my own judgement was flawed. I must correct this error. I must adapt…”
The Black Mist pours out of Viktor’s mechanical body, replaced instead by the gentle thrum of Hallowed Mist.
Viktor: “And improve!”
Viktor turns and destroys the remaining drones with his laser.
Viktor: “Core upgrade complete. Now operating at maximum efficiency. Yes… Embrace progress!”
You and Shyvana leave Viktor to his own devices, soaring back into the skies to search for more of Viego’s thralls.
>Pick Gangplank
You advance toward the Dead Pool, holding on tight as Shyvana narrowly evades the ships cannons. Once close enough, she lets out a stream of flame that engulfs the entire ship, sending it crashing toward the ground. You scan the wreckages and see a lone figure limping out: Gangplank.
Gangplank: “It’ll take more than that to sink me, boy!”
Gangplank fires a few shots with his gun, but the bullets glance harmlessly off of Shyvana’s scales. You return fire with tendrils of Hallowed Mist, holding pirate lord in place.
“I’m not trying to sink you, Captain! I’m trying to save you!”
“You’re already drowning, Gangplank! I’m here to pull you back up!”
Gangplank: “What nonsense! I’ve finally got the power to take back my city! I don’t need any help from the likes of you!”
“Viego won’t give you your city back, Gangplank! If he wins, there won’t be anything left of Bilgewater!”
“You really trust Viego that much? You’ve gotta know there’s only room for one king in the world he’s trying to make!”
Gangplank: “…I see now. So, that slimy wharfrat thinks he can double-cross me, does he? It’s about time he realized…”
Gangplank grabs hold of the Black Mist around him, discarding it like an old coat that’s outlived its usefulness. In its place, the Hallowed Mist seems to restore the Gangplanks torn and tattered clothes to something resembling their former glory.
Gangplank: “Dead men tell MY tale!”
He turns and fires a bullet into a crowd of wraiths emerging from the remnants of his ship.
Gangplank: “Go and rejoin your crew, boy! I’ll discipline mine, then find that Ruined King!”
You and Shyvana take to the skies again, once again searching for allies amidst the Black Mist.
Once you’ve freed everyone you can from Viego’s control, you scan the battlefield for your fellow Sentinels. It’s not long before you spot flashes of light in the darkness, and direct Shyvana to set you down at their source.
As you descend, you see your allies have all huddled together near the base of the tower, making one last desperate attempt to push through. Shyvana lets loose a stream of flame that scorches the wraiths around them, before touching down and allowing you to dismount.
Lucian: “Rookie!? That you?”
“Hey, boss.”
“Happy to see me?”
Vayne: “What happened to the dragon? And to the Wayfinder? That looks like… Hallowed Mist.”
Behind you, Shyvana reverts to her humanoid form and addresses the Sentinels.
“He’s freed me from Viego’s control, as well as the others under that monster’s sway. Go and do what you have to, Sentinels. I’ll hold these creatures back!”
Shyvana wraps herself in flame again as she charges back into the fray, burning away any undead that try to get her.
Lucian: “I’m still not sure what you did, Rook, but I guess now ain’t the time to question it.”
Yorick: “You’ve awakened the final piece of her soul… Then the time truly has come to put an end to this madness.”
You and the other Sentinels gather before the gates of Viego’s stronghold, steeling your nerves for one last push.
Lucian: “This is it, Sentinels! Let’s show this Ruined Creep what we’re made of!”
Shadow Isles Part V
With Yorick serving as your guide, you storm the ancient, dilapidated building that now serves as Viego’s castle. The gravedigger leads you through ancient hallways teeming with the Ruined King’s undead warriors, adorned in faded, rustic armor. Though more fearsome than the lowly wraiths you’re accustomed to, they fall quickly before the Sentinels’ onslaught of light, set to rest after centuries of servitude.
Finally, you push through one last door to emerge in what seems to be a makeshift throne room, the walls and ceiling broken away to reveal the lightless sky overhead. Across the room, a lone figure stands with his back toward you, the tip of his massive blade touching the ground.
Graves: “So that’s the Ruined King? Thought he’d be bigger.”
Jayce and Olaf: “Don’t let his size fool you!”
Viego: “Sentinels. How good of you to come. How kind of you to bring the final fetter.”
Viego turns to face you, and you get the sense that his power has somehow grown even more since your last encounter. A chill runs down your spine as you examine the room, seeing all the fetters from around Runeterra gathered neatly in a corner. They seem devoid now of life and light, nothing more than ordinary objects. Among them, to your horror, is a familiar-looking doll…
Lucian: “Enough stalling, creep! Where’s Senna?”
Viego: “Lucian… All who oppose me are hypocrites, and you may be the greatest of all. We share much in common, do we not?”
Lucian: “I’m nothin’ like you!”
Viego: “No? I know of your deeds, Purifier. You once scoured the world in pursuit of your lost love, just as I do. You place her safety above all else, even your own duties. If it meant saving her, you would damn this world without a hint of remorse.”
Riven: “What is he talking about?”
“Lucian, don’t listen to him!”
“Don’t let him get inside your head!”
Lucian: “You’re right, Rook! If this bastard won’t talk, we’ll just have to make him! Sentinels, open fire!”
On Lucian’s orders, the Sentinels charge Viego, the light of their relics illuminating the throne room. With a single swing of his blade, Viego unleashes a torrent of Black Mist that renders your attacks moot and forces you all back.
Viego: “This is the best resistance you can muster? Did you truly think yourselves a match for me, merely because you got past my armies?”
You clamber to your feet, only to find that Viego has vanished. You look around, only to find a hand wrapped firmly around your neck. Before you can even register what’s happening, the Wayfinder is snatched from your grasp and you find yourself on the floor once more. Viego reappears on his throne, examining the Wayfinder with amusement and contempt.
Viego: “To think that they would hide you away from me in such a trifling toy, my queen… But at last, the final fetter is truly in my grasp.
“Viego, stop! Isolde doesn’t want this!”
“Even if you bring her back, she’ll never love what you’ve become!”
Viego: “Silence! You know nothing, child! NOTHING! This cruel, twisted world took from me the only thing that ever mattered, the only thing that gave my life meaning! Never again! I will absorb every last piece of her soul. She will reside within me forever more, and we never be apart! No one will ever take her from me again!”
Diana: “You are mad! That… That is not love!”
Viego stands and tightens his grasp on the Wayfinder. You watch in horror as the light of Isolde’s soul fades, absorbed into the ceaseless darkness of Viego’s absent heart.
Viego: “It matters not what you think! I can feel her within me, granting me strength… She loves me, as I love her. Witness, Sentinels, the strength of our bond!”
You watch as the Black Mist pouring from Viego’s chest grows even more potent, wrapping around his body. A jet-black armor forms from the corruption, and a cape of pure darkness billows in the still air.
Viego: “You see? She and I are nearly one. Only one more piece remains, and then…”
Just then, a portal opens to the right of the throne. Vex emerges with her shadow in tow.
Vex: “It’s done. Oh, these guys are here?”
Viego: “Pay them no mind, Vex. They are no longer of any consequence.”
Vex: “Trust me, I’ve been trying my hardest to ignore them from the start. Anyway, that Sentinel chick’s nice and secure, just like you wanted.”
Lucian: “Senna…”
Viego: “Excellent. Then this is where we part, Sentinels. Do not fret. I will leave you with one final parting gift.”
With a snap of his fingers, Viego calls forth several wraiths from the sky above, which descend onto the throneroom in a screaming cloud. Viego and Vex quickly gather up the now lifeless fetters, preparing to make their escape through the portal.
Vayne: “Damn it! We have to go after him!”
Lucian: “I’ll go! The rest of you, cover me!”
With Relic light enhancing his movements, Lucian darts and dashes between the storm of souls, leaving the rest of you behind to deal with the wraiths as he makes for the portal. Amid the chaos, your eyes fall upon the now-lifeless Wayfinder, only to hear a familiar voice speak out to you from behind.
Yorick: “The king thinks that he’s won, but he’s overlooked something crucial.”
“What’s that?”
“What do you mean?”
Yorick: “Your piece of the queen was hidden from him, but there is another that he’s overlooked all this time. Take my cloak, child, and hurry.”
Yorick removes the shroud of darkness clinging to him and hands it to you. As you grasp it, you can hear countless voices whispering in your head as one: the voice of the Maiden.
Maiden: “Join us. Surrender to us. Be as one.”
Just then, Yorick opens his vile and sprinkles a single drop of water onto you. You feel the voices in your head growing fainter, but not completely silent.
Yorick: “Do not heed her, but keep her close. She’ll serve you well when the time comes. Now go.”
Yorick returns to the fray, summoning what few ghouls remain under his command to aid in the fight. You look to the portal and steel yourself before sprinting through the chaos, snatching up the Wayfinder as you make for the closing portal.
Riven: “Rookie! Where are you going!? Rookie!?”
You offer no response as you dive into the shadows once more, letting darkness engulf you once again.

Thoughts on Sentinel and Ruined Skins
Alright, I plan to give my full thoughts on the entire event once it’s over, but for the time-being, I wanted to give my general thoughts on each skin so far. I’ll be putting this under a read-more for convenience.))
So I guess I’ll start by saying that I like the concept of the event as a whole, though I’ve got some gripes (as do many) with who was chosen to partake. I think, having played through the VN up to its current point, that they do a decent job justifying most of the characters who get Ruined/recruited. That said, it does annoy me that they didn’t even go all-in on the concept; one Sentinel and one Ruined champ per region could have been great, but then there are some regions that don’t even have one of each.
So yeah, in addition to giving my overall thoughts on each existing skin, I also wanna touch on who else I think could have been included.
Sentinel Vayne: In my opinion, the best Sentinel skin of the lot. Not only does it look good (arguably better than her original design) but Vayne is a natural fit for the Sentinels. She already devotes her life to hunting monsters and dark magic, so it absolutely makes sense that she would join up at least until the Ruination is dealt with.
Ruined Shyvana: I wasn’t so sure about this one at first, but I’ve warmed up to it now that we know how Viego’s possession works. Taking the worst aspects of someone’s personality and bringing them to the forefront? Yeah, go figure that Shyvana would give into her monstrous side and resentment for being persecuted almost every day of her life. You could argue that there were better picks, but hey, better Ruined Shyvana than yet another Lux skin, right?
Sentinel Olaf: While not my first choice, I can’t deny that it works in the long-run. The dude already has a history of fighting the undead in his endless quest to find a worthy foe capable of slaying him, and of course the Ruined King seems like a suitably worthy opponent for Olaf to go up against. That being said, I feel like we should have gotten a Ruined Champ from the Freljord as Olaf’s rival, rather than it just being Vex. I don’t mind Vex appearing when she did to have us encounter her for the first time, but she should have had a Ruined champ to help her, which leads me to...
Ruined Tryndamere: Come on, this one’s obvious. There are a few characters in the Freljord that might have fit the Ruined theme, but none more-so than Tryndamere, I think. The guy’s already got a whole thing about controlling his rage and trying to use it as a force for good in the Avarosa tribe. Imagine Viego corrupting Tryndamere and causing all of that primal fury to just explode forth. Plus, come ON Riot, Olaf vs Tryndamere. Battle of the Berserkers. Frankly, it’s absurd to me that Olaf hasn’t tried fighting Tryndamere already, given that they’re both too angry to die. He HAS to have at least heard about the Barbarian King, right?
Sentinel Riven: Honestly, this one is interesting to me. With the other Sentinels, we all kind of know/expect that they’ll return to normal once the event is over and go back to their status quo. Riven feels like an exception. As she stated herself in the event: she’s a wanted criminal in Noxus and it’s not exactly like she’d be super welcomed back in Ionia. She joins the Sentinels because she has nowhere else to go and no other cause to fight for once freed from Draven’s arena. Aside from Vayne, Riven feels like the one who’d most likely stay with the Sentinels once the event is over, even though I know that probably won’t happen. Still, I like her inclusion, all-in-all.
Ruined Draven: Honestly, not the one I would have picked. I mean, it’s just Draven. Absolutely nothing has changed from him being Ruined. Granted, I do think it’s absolutely hilarious that Draven’s worst version of himself is already just himself, an egotistical prick who craves attention, but there are way better picks in Noxus to see getting Ruined. I mean, the event teaser showed Darius getting possessed, and I think there’s a lot more to work with there. Also, am I the only one that thinks that Ruined Draven feels redundant when Soul Reaver Draven is already a thing?
Sentinel Diana: So this one I have some complicated feelings about. On one hand, it makes sense that Diana would join the fight against the undead for the sake of the Lunari. On the other, it feels like MOST of the Aspects should be getting involved with this. I mean, the VN has her say that the other Aspects ARE fighting the Undead all over Targon, but then you’d think we would wanna go and recruit them as well. Seriously, Taric? WTF are you, Protector? Also, Diana needing a Sentinel weapon is weird since we already confirmed that the Mist doesn’t like Celestial magic, but... Eh, the blade she gets is cool, I guess.
Ruined Pantheon: And here comes the controversial one... Right, so like many, I did not care for this skin. In fact, I still have reservations about it. I DO like that it is actually Ruined PANTHEON, because yeah, the Black Mist turns dead things undead. Go figure it could bring back the remnants of the war god lingering in Atreus. That’s a really cool idea, but there’s absolutely an argument to be made that it fucks with Atreus’s whole character arc and makes his seemingly indomitable will look like a joke... But hey, Viego himself said that he’d never be able to take a proper Aspect, which absolutely tracks, which kinda makes Atreus the only Targonian champion he COULD defeat and corrupt.
Sentinel Irelia: To be frank, not too much to say about this one. Irelia’s entire character motivation is defending her homeland against invaders, and... Yeah the undead definitely count as invaders. While someone like Shen probably would have been a better recruit for the Sentinels, Irelia works just fine.
Ruined Karma: And heeere’s another controversial one. Yeah, Karma is not the one I would have chosen. Honestly, just about anyone else from Ionia would have been a better fit for Ruination. Ruined Pantheon can be justified by the dead war god coming back and taking over Atreus’s body again, but Karma and her vessel Darha should have absolutely been able to resist it... And they kind of do. In the event, we actually do see Karma switching back and forth. She’s the only one we’ve seen fight back against Viego long enough to revert to her normal self, at least for a time. In fact, the implication that Darha is being corrupted while the entity of Karma itself fights back is neat. Still, I would have preferred Ruined Zed or something along those lines.
Sentinel Graves: OK, I love this skin. I don’t love the context around it. First of all, the fact that he’s the Sentinel for Piltover is dumb. Graves is from Bilgewater, and should have been the Sentinel we recruited there. I also don’t care for how Twisted Fate is completely missing and never even referenced from his story. Like, OK, Graves fled Bilgewater because it was already overcome with Harrowing. Fine. But... Did he just leave TF behind? If so, why does he have Fate’s blue card? There’s so much we’re missing here. I love that he’s joining just because he’s got a bone to pick with Viego, but Graves should have been the choice for Bilgewater. As for who should be the Piltover Sentinel? Well...
Sentinel Jayce: Think about it. Jayce is a character who’s had nothing to do in the Piltover/Zaun lore for ages. He already considers himself a hero and a defender of Piltover. Plus, imagine what a Sentinel version of his hammer would be like! Hell, Jayce’s whole conflict with Viktor revolves around their opposing beliefs around free will. Of course he’d have a word or two to say about the Ruined King, who’s running around and stripping people of their free will! On that note..
Ruined Viktor: Absolutely a perfect fit for Ruination. Under Viego’s influence, he could deem undeath as the next logical step of evolution, casting aside the limits of flesh and emotion for a spectral form where one’s thoughts were dictated by a single, “superior” consciousness. It would be a perfect contrast for Sentinel Jayce, and besides: we’ve already seen a ghostly version of this concept with Death Sworn Viktor. If Draven gets two undead skins, why not? Plus, we know that the Harrowing can effect machines thanks to Legends of Runeterra, so... Yeah. Ruined Viktor. Let’s go.
Sentinel Pyke: Another controversial one. While I like the general idea behind it, frankly, I would have just left Pyke as he is. We already have him fighting the undead in the Ruined King game, and we know Nagakabouros power can hurt the undead; there was no real need for him to pick up Sentinel gear. Much as I love the line “Wraiths, wraiths are on the list,” I would have just made Graves the Sentinel rep for Bilgewater and called it there.
Ruined Miss Fortune: This one just sucks. It absolutely sucks. The Sarah Fortune I know would have never gone to such lengths merely for power, especially when she already rules most of Bilgewater at this point. Her various short stories show her doing a pretty damn good job stamping out the warring factions challenging her rule, and even if she decided that she needed some kind of supernatural leg up on the competition, it’s not like Bilgewater is lacking in magic. Also, the design sucks, turning her back into the sex icon that they’ve spent the last 7 years moving her away from. Ruined Fortune sucks. As for who SHOULD have gotten the skin instead...
Ruined Gangplank: Now HERE’S a pirate lord desperate for power. He lost his ship, he lost his fleet, he lost his throne, he even lost an arm. Gangplank has been struggling to regain control of Bilgewater ever since Burning Tides, and while we haven’t heard much of him recently, it can be safely assumed that he’s not making much progress with how much control Sarah currently has. Gangplank is absolutely ruthless enough and immoral enough to bargain with the Ruined King for power. Plus, think about it: he’s already been “reborn” once, so to him, Ruination probably wouldn’t even be that big of a deal.
Sentinel Rengar: All things considered, I like this one. Rengar, I think, has one of the best justifications for joining the Sentinels. When Rengar’s jungle is invaded by wraiths, Rengar finds himself faced with monsters that even his skills cannot take down. Yeah, these undead are worthy prey challenging his reign as the apex predator in Kumungu, and if the Viego is their alpha, then he’s the target to go for. Now, obviously he’s still got a hunt for Kha’Zix that has yet to be resolved, but let’s be honest: we’re never going to see that rivalry conclude, and this is the most lore relevance Rengar has had in ages. I’m for this skin, though of course we do still have the issue of who in Kumungu would be a good Ruined rival for him. On that note...
Ruined Zyra: Alright, here me out. Ixtal as a region doesn’t have that many characters, let-alone good candidates for Ruination. Perhaps the best and most obvious candidate would be Qiyana, but I take issue with this for a few reasons. Firstly, accepting Ruination for the power to rule is already something we’ve done with MF/GP, and second, I don’t think the Shadow Isles aesthetic works super well with her elemental-swapping gameplay. I chose Ruined Zyra because, well, Zyra already wants to spread her plants far and wide across Runeterra, and the Mist would be a great method for carrying seeds, not to mention making her offspring harder to prune. Not the most deep, but yeah, I think Ruined Zyra would have been a cool concept to work with.
Lastly...
Unbound Thresh: A mistake. I’ve already made my opinions on Thresh’s lore abundantly clear in my rewrite for him, and this skin just destroys any hope for his character for me. This sexy E-Boy is unquestionably the worst thing to come out of the whole event, and whatever Riot is planning to do with Thresh in the future, it does NOT justify this design. Plus, the whole idea that an undead character can become “unbound” is just dumb. Like, when has it ever been implied that Thresh himself was actually bound in any way? He’s one of the few Shadow Isles entities that can freely leave the Mist, at least for a time! Yeah, this skin was a mistake, but Riot has to cash in on the simps, I suppose.
Anyways, I’ll give my thoughts on the story itself once this is all said and done, but for now, these are my takes on the individual skins. Hope you all enjoyed hearing me ramble.

for those at all interested in how demacia actually functions with its king / queen, council and nobles, here is a little summary of the way someone becomes king and the system it is noted to have.
demacia prior to the addition of the map was a CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY meaning there was a monarch but they have their powers by way on constitutional rights. usually there is a government to check the king. england was a constitutional monarchy at one point in time. in lore this was portrayed in that the king or queen was an elected official given governing power over the kingdom by a high council. this council was likely formed of high ranking nobility, magistrates and like officials.
however, with the addition of the map, demacia’s government status was changed to FEUDAL MONARCHY. the feudal system varies but can be basically summarised as lords swearing fidelity to a ruler who then governs over them and the ruler is the head of all military and the vassal gets land in exchange ( unfortunately the definition of feudalism is broad and unspecific ). HOWEVER, we are given no explanation on how this works except for the base definition of a feudal monarchy and riot has KEPT the old workings of a king or queen being elected ( as of this point of time, who knows what’s going on with demacia anymore ) which is how they described demacia as a constitutional monarchy. so we have a feudal monarchy where the king is elected and also gets governing power from his council ( made up of people who may or may not be his vassals? ) and military power from his vassals which he was the one giving power and land to in exchange?
getting confused yet? just wait ...
in the recent jarv 4 update we have received a snippet into jarv 3′s life and how he rose to be king. this snippet provides some stuff which could be seen as feudal implications but the outcome is surprising.
Soon after King Jarvan III’s coronation, he addressed the people of Demacia. Even though there were still many foes beyond the borders of their proud kingdom, several of the noble families had begun to feud with one another, some even raising private militias to seek the favor of their new king.
This would not stand. Jarvan would not allow such dangerous rivalries to develop, and declared his intention to end the feuding by marriage.
jarv 3 stops his vassals raising armies for his favour. now the whole thing about lords who are feudal vassals is they are militaristic. they raise armies in favour of the one they have sworn to as part of their deal ( plus like tax ). but jarv 3 is like NAH NONE OF THAT. like them providing armies is like a key component of feudalism and jarv is like ‘ nah have the land for free. stop vying for my favour you look desperate. and desperation doesn’t look good. ’ like i can understand the wanting to stop fighting but he straight goes against one of the main 3 tenants of what we think feudalism is.
and while we’re here about using terms wrong, you know jarv the fourth shouldn’t be jarv the fourth. in european royals the number denoting the lineage gets added AFTER the person becomes the monarch not prior. so jarv the fourth should just be jarv, if we go by our world’s structures. but as you can see those mean nothing here.
so here we have a feudal monarchy where the king is not receiving his part of the exchange for the land granted to the vassals under their possession ( and riot has never said anything about all land in demacia being owed unto the king as it is technically gifted from him in a feudal monarchy but y’know riot ). honestly the only thing feudal about demacia is its military focus and the king being supposedly the head of military but like lots of other political systems have this.
but here is when it gets interesting. the king in demacia doesn’t have all the power. as aforementioned, the king is granted power through his council. but a feudal king should have complete control in exchange for what he offers ( and jarv 3 seems to be giving a lot and just not taking the armies he should be owed ) but he doesn’t. again, in jarv 3′s info from jarv 4′s lore we know he backed his son having shy on her guard, or at least did not condemn it.
With the dragon’s skull in tow, Jarvan journeyed to his father’s court in triumph, Shyvana at his side. Though the king was overcome with emotion at his son’s return, some of the gathered nobles quietly questioned the wisdom of allowing such a creature to stand with the prince… let alone serve as one of his protectors.
the king of a nation backed the prince of said nation having a magical creature on his guard in a magical fearing nation. and the council questioned him. like you’re telling me the king of a magic fearing nation allowed one to work as a royal attendant so closely with his child who he has had on ‘ [guard] every moment of his life ’ because of how protective he is of him and it does not indicate an opinion on magic in his nation? cause, it at least says he doesn’t hate them or think they’re a threat. it at least means he trusts shy enough as a person to entrust his son to or that he trusts his son’s judgement on this magical being. it means he is by extent putting his own support behind the prince who is actively striving for an equal demacia.
so why does demacia have laws still against mages? he’s the king after all? because, remember the council disapproved. they questioned his wisdom. which means the council - which gives power to the king or queen of demacia - didn’t like that call. remember the above bit on jarv 3, he strove to STOP in fighting in demacia. i’m not saying he likes mages but he strives for peace and is backing a cause he thinks will work. he trusts his son. his son who he has purposely raised to carry ‘ all his hopes and dreams for the kingdom’s future ’. the son he purposely raised to embody ideals of ‘ charity ... duty ... [and] honour. ’ so again why? CAUSE THE KING IS NOT IN COMPLETE CONTROL OF DEMACIA OR RIOT HAS ONE HUNDRED INCONSISTENCIES PER SENTENCE AND DIDN’T MEAN ANY IMPLICATION OF WHAT I’M GATHERING FROM THIS.
tl:dr - either riot can’t write coherent plots or jarv 3 doesn’t have complete political control without the backing on the nobles and is positioned to support jarv 4 who is supporting peaceful reforms with mages and equality in demacia. AND NOTHING GETS DONE IN DEMACIA CAUSE IT IS BOTH A FEUDAL MONARCHY AND A CONSTITUTIONAL ONE AND RIOT NEEDS TO STOP

The Thunder’s Roar - Volibear Top
This article considers Volibear in the Top lane.
In my quest for a new champion pool, I find that picking just one champion has been hard. I like different champions for different reasons. Tanks, Fighters, Assassins, Divers, Protectors, etc.
While going through my search, I recalled the days of playing 'olde Warwick' and how, when I decided to main him top lane for a bit after I had played  Rengar top, that playing old Warwick with simple to no mechanics made me learn more about the game. As such, it made me determined to find a simple champ that I could play to help me continue to learn about the game while playing in lower elos.
As I looked for that more mechanically simple champion, I came across Garen, Pantheon, Wukong, Shyvana and Volibear, amongst a number of others.
Enter Volibear, The Thunder’s Roar.
I admit, At first, I wasn't too familiar with Volibear. He would come on my radar from time to time when playing vs him in Bots games and getting surprised by his Bite (W) execute. It would often catch me off guard. Other than that, he didn't seem interesting enough to play.
That said, recently, I decided to try him out and see how he would fit into the game and how he would match my play style.
So join me as I have a closer look at Volibear.
Volibear is a mechanically simple champ. No skill shots involved. Just a point an click Q and W execute, some area effect with his E. Playing him leavs room to focus on decision making. He is a melee champion. In terms of delivering damage Volibear relies on his auto attacking primarily, with his abilities providing some secondary source of damage.
Let's look at his abilities. His passive allows him to heal up after having his health reduced down to a certain level. His Q is a movement buff and an empowered attack. The movement buff is furthered increased in movement speed if you are running at an enemy champ. If your Q autos an enemy, it flips the enemy behind Volibear. His W buffs his auto attack speeds. In addition, after 3 auto attacks it unlocks the ability to 'Bite' which is an empowered attack. This ability scales with Volibears bonus health and can execute a low health target as it's damage also scales with how low the intended target is. His E is a form of CC that has different effects depending on if it impacts enemy champions or minions. For enemy champions, it acts as a minor knock back and delivers some damage. If the enemy champion is diving towards Volibear (which I will refer to as diving in) they suffer more damage. For minions, his E acts as a fear which forces the minions to stop auto attacking and forces them away. His R is an empowered auto attack that has a chain effect causing magic damage to up to 8 enemy champions and minions.
His role? Based on my analysis, I feel that Volibear can serve as a classical peel tank. His E could be used to prevent dives and interrupt channels, his Q could be used to peel an attacker that dove in on a champion you want to protect. His passive allows Volibear to absorb more damage.
Volibear could be used as an initiator. He could run towards an enemy and flip he/she back. IF, his team can follow up and attack that enemy with sufficient enough damage, the enemy will likely be out of the fight. This type of play needs more thought and some coordination with your team. They need to be able to follow you and, the moment you flip an enemy behind you, to start damaging that champion so that he or she are killed or severly damaged and need to exit the fight. If Volibear is left with enough health or HP of his own, he should be able to rejoin your team and create a 5 vs 4 situation so that you can use that advantage in numbers to get an objection from the enemy team, like a tower or a dragon.
Items to build on him. In league of legends, you can build any item on a champion. Nothing prevents you from doing so other than needing Smite as one of your summoner spells in order to purchase jungle specific items. That said, for each champion, there will be some ideal ways to build the champion. Remember, you earn gold over time and by last hitting minions. So it's best to use that gold as efficiently as possible. Defensive items. When in lane, you will likely be taking some damage from your lane opponent and the others champs that try to gangk you in line (e.g. the Jungler, Mid laner, support). Based on how the lane is going, purchase defensive items that helps you absorb the damage much better. Some suggestions. Sunfire Cape, because he tends to stand in the middle of fights a lot, building this item gives Volibear an additional damage source to enemies standing near Volibear, and the health add more value to Volibear's W scaling and his passive. Additionally, in lane it will help Volibear push waves or clear waves more easily. If against AP damage, Spirit Visage. Not only does this item help with providing you more Magic Resistance, Health and some cooldown reduction, it helps you recover health more quickly when out of combat or when you passive health regen activates. Keep in mind, in League of Legends, it's always best to build per the situation. If you are facing a top laner that deals physical damage, build health and armour. If you are facing a top laner that deals magical damage, build health and magic resist. In the laning phase I find that playing defensively and focusing on safely farming cs is very important to my strategy with Volibear as the ideal state for Volibear in the mid to late game is for Volibear to be tanky enough to absorb damage, for him to be able to enter a team fight and fight with the enemy team, to zone out a threat, to disengage a diver, to be able to initiate a fight. Lastly, Volibear's passive and his W's Bite damage scale well with health. Use that knowledge to your advantage when choosing what to build on Volibear during the laning phase.
Even though Volibear has his Q that allows him to rush at an enemy, I find that he can be poked out or kited. Watch out for this in lane and when grouping for a team fight. This is where surviving the early game and building items to be able to better avoid and absorb the poke is better as Volibear needs to get within melee range to do damage so he needs to be able to take punishment while playing his role.
Tips Laning phase, I find it's best to play safe. Stay in lane to absorb experience (xp), try to get as many last hits on the minions (cs) while being safe and paying appropriate respect to your lane opponent. Don't die. It's better to miss some cs and just absorb the experience than to try to get all the cs, get damaged while doing so as you put yourself in a bad position when trying to get that cs, and to be stuck under tower or to be dove or gangk and then to lose the laning phase of the game. For Volibear, you want to develop the skill to survive the lane as well as you can, and to use that skill of staying decent in lane to maintain the same levels as your lane opponent, to use the cs gained to buy defensive items to help you stay competitive in lane and to be able to impact the mid to late game where you can join your team to fight and to secure objectives and push side lanes.
Mid to late game, remember to use your tankiness to your teams advantage. If I and or my team had a poor laning phase, it may mean I am weaker than the poke I will receive from the enemy team. Therefore I take on a peel role, trying to avoid being poked, trying to keep my health regen passive up, trying to prevent dives with my E, using my W and R for straight on brawls, for using your Q to peel any person diving your team's carries or to grab their damage dealer and toss them into the team. If I had a decent laning phase and my team can do some decent damage to a target, I could look to initiate more often, trying to position myself so that I can zone the enemy away with the threat of me charging at them, with me (hopefully) being able to safely absorb damage so that my team can force objectives.
Playing Volibear has been fun. I'm not sure if he fits my style of play, but I've had fun playing him in top lane and truly understanding my role, how to lane, when to team up, when keep a side lane pushed, how to exert some pressure on the map, how to roam, etc. For that reason alone I am adding him to my champion pool while playing in lower elos.
If you are new to league, if you are looking for simple champion to main in the top lane for the new season, I recommend that you give Volibear a try.
Here are a few videos that talk about or demonstrate Volibear that I felt were decent references.

Kiss for @nihil-remedium and the rest of their muses since I know they do your Varus as well
// Someone is painfully unaware of how many muses Birdie has. Or they know perfectly well and just want to torture me? Hard to tell, not gonna tag every single one of Birdie’s blogs just gonna link [X] this post which has a full list while also tagging. @nihil-remedium I’m going to attempt the whole list, we’ll see how far I get.
Lux is finding it hard to breath with how tightly Cassi is coiled around her. She’d known the other’s tail was flexible, but she hadn’t expected to be nearly crushed in it. It wasn’t that it hurt, not really, it was mostly just making her dizzy. Thankfully the other didn’t seem to mind when Lux rested her head against Cassi. How she’d ended up sitting in the serpents nest of pillows was a little beyond her at the moment. It’d started out simple, something about letting Cassiopeia play in her hair and now? Lux glanced up at the other woman, eyes a little dazed. There was the softest little sound, almost like a hum from Cassi, as if she was debating something. Lux wasn’t sure what she was debating, and didn’t care either as she leaned up slightly to nuzzle under Cassiopeia’s chin. The snake stilled, but didn’t pull back even when Lux pressed feather light kisses to her throat. Was she losing her mind? Possibly. Was this a terrible idea? Most definitely.
He didn’t look angry, as she’d thought he might. It had been a cheeky move on her part but self defense training wasn’t something she was keenly interested in. Not at least in the way Varus had planned for them. His pace was grueling, and she was reminded once again that he just liked to fight. Combat for him was fun, exciting, even if it was tiring for her. She’d tossed out a flash of light followed by tackling him to the ground. The resulting scuffle had ended with him pinning her with an almost bemused look. His expressions were always minimal, and she’d had to learn how to read the slightest change. She still didn’t get it right all the time, despite how hard she tried.
“Sorry, just needed a break.” Maybe it was pride then, at her doing something unexpected? Lux had a habit of surprising him after all, despite his attempts to understand her. She lifted her hand to play in the strands of silver that had tumbled over his shoulder during their fight. He stilled for a moment, waiting, before relaxing into her touch. He always did that, tensed as if ready for an attack or a threatening motion before relaxing when he realized it wasn’t.
He was about to pull back, likely to insist they pick back up where they’d left off when she stopped him. His skin was always warm under her touch but his lips were fire on hers. It had her stomach fluttering, and him freezing in place, if he put an arrow through her a few moments from now at least it’s be worth it.
You’d think meeting a dragon would be easy for her. What with Shyvana living in Demacia. It wasn’t like she’d never seen a dragon, but she’d never seen one quite this large before. She’d also never seen one that shimmered like the stars either. The fact that he’d done nothing more than lazily spoken with her was an even stranger occurrence. He was sassy and hilarious, and she found his company quite enjoyable. Thus the parting kiss to the tip of his snoot as she promised to return had seemed entirely natural. At least until she remembered that he was a dragon and he might find it offensive. Ah well, hopefully he liked her enough not to smite her.
Lux has rarely in her years of travel met someone shorter than her, or quite as fascinating as Orianna. The young woman has been decidedly pleasant throughout their entire conversation. She’s answered as many of Lux’s questions as she can but there just seems an overwhelming sense of loss about her. She seems confused about her place in the world, and Lux can understand that. The offer to dance is a random one, but Orianna accepts it with grace and Lux can’t help the kiss she places to the back of the other’s hand. It’s silly, it’s not her place, but she doesn’t care because it just felt right.
The feeling of his nose pressing into her stomach has her heart fluttering in her chest. The flick of his ears indicates he’s heard the sudden increase in her heart rate. Lux forces herself to calm as she reaches out a gentle hand to rub one of Warwick’s ears. Her small hand vanishes into the fluff around it as she smiles at him gently, though he can’t see it.
“Good boy. I brought you something.” Her voice is soft, her tone the most gentle and calming thing as she pets his ears. His breath is warm against her abdomen as he huffs against her. He can smell the meat she’s brought him, carefully devoid of blood lest he frenzy. This isn’t their first meeting, but this is always how it goes. It’s as if each time he has to acclimate himself to her scent. He’s clam today, more himself, less feral but still just as sad as he always is. She runs her other hand along his maw encouraging him to lift his head, across his cheek and into his neck ruff, all her motions slow, calming, but deliberate. There can be no fear, no trepidation, so the kiss she places on the side of his muzzle is firm, but shows no hesitance.
“Missed you.”
“Kayle.” Lux has dropped to the floor at the angel’s feet, exhaustion finally kicking in. She can feel the arms around her, the wings draping over her gently. Too much energy, too much effort, and yet somehow Kayle doesn’t seem to be the least bit tired as she gently lifts Lux into her arms. The tiny mage curls up easily, tucking herself small against the other woman who’s lifted her wings to shield them. There is no need really, other than the fact it makes Lux just feel safer in general.
“Sleep.” It’s a bit of a command but Lux doesn’t mind all the same. She leans up slightly missing her mark and ending up kissing Kayle’s jaw instead, close but not quite where she was aiming. If the angel is shocked she doesn’t show it, just continues to hold the tiny mage without complaint.
She doesn’t want to believe it, even when he stands there before her cigar between his lips and shotgun in hand. To his credit he looks just as shocked as she feels, at least in the way his eyes widen at the sight of her she perceives it as shock. Tears spring to her eyes and she drops the piece of wood to the ground next to the other member of his group. The man is unconscious and bleeding but at least he’s breathing. She holds her hands up and takes a step forward.
“Malcom, he... I.. . I’m sorry.” He’d attacked her, pretty ladies didn’t walk alone at night in these parts. Especially not ladies of rich families, but she’d come to warn him. Her brother had picked up his trail, asked her questions about him being a member of the mafia. Lux had denied it, every word, she wouldn’t believe it. That wasn’t her Mal. He was an honest man, sweet, shy about some things, not this, never this.
“It’s alright Lux, go on.” He puts the cigar out on a nearby wall and motions to the door with is head. Graves shouldn’t let her go, should end it quickly but he doesn’t have it in him. Doesn’t have the heart. He half expects her to flee out of the room. To run past him, and for a moment that looks like what she’s going to do. He’s got a few moments to consider his options before he’s got an armful of sobbing blonde who’s peppering his face with kisses until she finds his lips.
“Please don’t hate me.” Her voice is a broken little whisper against his lips as he carefully moves the shotgun out of the way. Gods this was a mess he’d never expected to find himself in.
It had started simply enough, stroking his ears had been a simple process. The soft sound of his pleasure at such menstruation, the feeling of his arms around her. Of being pulled into his lap, his hands on her hips as she’d moved her fingers through his hair. It had all seemed so natural at the time. She loved the feeling of his feathers, and Rakan had never begrudged her petting him, touching him. She wasn’t sure how it had gone from simple petting to the feeling of his nails digging into her hips and her lips on his. It had been a very strange turn of events. It was a dizzying display of lights behind her eyes, and electricity along her skin wherever his fingers touched. Really, how had it ended up like this? More importantly, why was she still kissing him, and even more than that why as he letting her? All questions she supposed she could answer later, after she’d finished drowning herself in the bird below her.

✿ For Shyvana, Yang and Sable
Send a ✿ to my inbox and my muse will fill this out about yours!
Shyvana:
A thought about them that they’d never share: I want him to be just mine. I don’t want to share.
First impression of them: He’s really big! Probably all show though, I shouldn’t get my hopes up.
Favorite thing about them: How big and sweet he is, even if he likes to pretend he’s not
Least favorite thing about them: That he can do that peck bounce thing on command. That’s cheating and he knows it!
Hopes for their future relationship: That he’ll ask me to be his forever. Maybe we have kids too
Yang:
A thought about them that they’d never share: He’s got a great ass
First impression of them: He looks big an fun. Might be worth a fight or something else
Favorite thing about them: His big body and big... well... you know.
Least favorite thing about them: Body hair. I know its a big ask but I’m not into it
Hopes for their future relationship: I want him to surprise me on that.
Sable:
A thought about them that they’d never share: He is... Very... S-sexy... Am I allowed to say that? I don’t want to get in trouble.
First impression of them: I had heard the legends of the barbarians of the north and their fearsome anger. But he does not seem to share those tropes, he has anger but he also has control.
Favorite thing about them: His kindness.
Least favorite thing about them: His anger. It makes me fearful to see him mad, I rue the day he lashes out at me.
Hopes for their future relationship: I wish for a loving romance with him! Touching, feeling warm meals and some hearty laughs. I wish to see what kind of a man he is when he has me alone.

Who I Think Would Make For Great Star Guardian Skins In The Future
(Warning) This is souly based off my opinions. I may not have every champion you may want to see on here, because I was putting into thought abilities, particle affects and character in general. Also, this will be long. Not in order. (NOT FEMALE EXCLUSIVE)
1.Sona
Tumblr media
Not to be against anyone, I just really want to see this. Her kit and base model are perfect for this. I know she has the DJ skin which is probably why she’ll never get one. But I can dream, she’d be perfect!
2. Bard
Tumblr media
He’s already a star sent celestial being! Come on, if Soraka is getting a skin so should he, its fitting. Plus his particle effects leave plenty of room for that. And I want stary tunnels okay.
3. Diana
Tumblr media
She’s the figging warrior of the moon, the night. Lore wise it seems rather suitable, and her effects have plenty to work with.
4. Nami
Tumblr media
I need a wave of stars for an ult, okai? Fight me. She can be a constellation. (Extreme personal opinion) She doesn’t really fit because the water but I have hope.
5. Karma
Tumblr media
She’d make a suitable star guardian. Her effects are flawlessly fitting. Lore wise, ehhh but then again it’s always a stretch. (MF is a star guardian)
6. Quinn
Tumblr media
Most of the new guardians are getting their own little companions with them. Well Quinn is built in with one! She’s made for this! Especially with seeing how Ezreal’s recall looks.
7. Ekko
Tumblr media
Wonderful particle effects, and if Ezreal can make the roster, he fits the bill as well. He can be the most magical boy ever. He’s still young and routy. Give him to Jinx. Please. Plus it that academy skin is anything to look off of, he’s already halfway to weeb territory.
8. Kennen
Tumblr media
Yordles!? Yes, give him more attention. This is one way to make a big splash. We already have Lulu and Poppy, why not add another yordle to the roster, this time be sure it’s a boy though. His skin line up is alright but not great, personally is Super Kennen skin is the only one that looks good. And I say this knowing of MD but honestly that skin is lacking. Give him a whole new particle package. Also I’ve been running into him a lot on the rift lately, so that means he’s obviously being played. Maybe give a returning champion some hype with a nice skin?
9. Jayce
Tumblr media
Superman, I mean pretty boy Jayce would be a fun magical boy in my opinion. He could have a sparkly magical hammer like Poppy, plus I’d ship that cute mess. He would milk the shit out of that, personality wise. Cause he’s a handsome mess regardless, let me say.
10. Irelia
Tumblr media
Another Ionian sneaks on my list. Personally I’d love to see what they could do with her as a star guardian. That would be interesting. Plus she could have just stars or something around her instead of blades and toss them out for her ult. –shrugs- Just seems like an interesting idea.
11. Taric
Tumblr media
This list writes itself with this Fabio, king of the gems, mountain man. I mean if there’s anything keeping the Ezreal and Taric ship apart it’s the stars, amirite?! I mean just look at the guy! He’d be so fabulous, even more fabulous. –slow clap-
12. Illaoi
Tumblr media
I can dream okai, give her a skin already.
13. Shyvana
Tumblr media
Yes, I know she has Super Galaxy. But I mean giving her a star guardian skin gives the opportunity for yet another starry dragon!? And I’m all game for that.
14. Varus
Tumblr media
He’s a fan favorite and I see his name bounced around as a candidate. I can see it, basing off the Archlight and Heartseeker skins, he’s not afraid to look like a pretty boy.
15. Nidalee
Tumblr media
Star kitty? Maybe. I dunno though. She sees interesting. Again, I’d like to see the direction they’d take with her.
16. LeBlanc
Tumblr media
Yea, I know shes a villain, but Syndra (who is a villain character) got one. So why not give this magical lady some more magic! She’d loooooove that I’m sure! Plus she’s gorgeous and I could see her effects being easy to work with for this skin.
17. Twisted Fate
Tumblr media
Fight me, he seems like he could do it. Stars not cards? Sure, fuck it! Gimmie more magical boys!
Honorable mentions: Annie, Kayle, Orianna, Anivia, Azir, Ashe, Corki, Karthus, Vladimir, and Darius.

Chapter Four:
Two Months Later
Magdalene was back in Diagon Alley with her list of Hogwarts supplies in one hand and her cat, Shyvana, sitting in her cauldron in the other. She cursed under her breath for the umpteenth time, swearing to herself to make that leech of a boy pay for it. Not only did he dare go to her potential employer’s house to ruin her interview, but he ended up taking her and his cousin down with him. This won’t go unpunished, she stated in her mind as she made her way towards Ollivander’s to, as she did every year, make him check her wand. The brass bell rang as she opened the door to the renovated store. She could not help but remember the first time she had entered that shop.
She was in awe. She had never thought, in her eleven years, that such wonders existed. Her parents were just as awestruck as she was, and they asked multiple questions to their guide: a most peculiar man, roughly Maggie’s height and who spoke in a squeaky voice. His name, Magdalene would later remember, was Filius Flitwick.
“Ah, now, the most important part!” Flitwick squeaked, making everyone jump. “The wand! And the best place for that has always been Ollivander's…”
Professor Flitwick rambled on about the history of Ollivander’s wand shop, which captivated her parents, but she was too busy marvelling at the visuals to pay him any heed. The shop smelled of old parchment and broomsticks—although the latter scent was still unfamiliar to her. Professor Flitwick had enthusiastically explained to her the rudiments of Quidditch, when they had first read the whole of the letter. Mr. Ollivander smiled down at Flitwick as the four of them penetrated the shop.
“Good to see you, Professor. Muggle-Born?” He inquired, tilting his head towards Magdalene, who was too busy looking at all the shelves and what they contained to notice.
“Most certainly, Mr. Ollivander! Come, Magdalene, now you’re going to have to get measured for your wand. Come on; let’s see what your wand is going to look like.”
Magdalene was measured and asked a couple of questions before Ollivander started pulling wands out of the shelves behind the front desk. Half a dozen wands later, Ollivander took almost a minute in staring at her, as though debating whether he ought to do what he had in mind or not. Finally, after forty-five seconds of agonising silence, he whooshed to the bottom of the aisle and crouched down to retrieve a rather long box, compared with the other ones she had tried. Even as he approached the quartet, he seemed hesitant.
He pulled out a wand and meant to extend it towards Maggie but he retrieved his arm before she could reach for it. “You must understand, Miss Middleton that I am reluctant to give you this wand to try out.” He informed her.
She looked up, squinting with a mixture of suspicion and curiosity. “Why?”
Mr. Ollivander pursed his lips and gave her the wand. As she took hold of it, she felt a warmth erupt from within the wand, extending from her hand to her arm, and spreading throughout the rest of her body. A light breeze ruffled her hair against her face, despite the weather being hot and still. She glanced back up at Ollivander who had a mixture of wonder and disappointment plastered all over his face. He took back the wand, and placed it back into the box gently, as though it might explode.
“Can’t I have that one, Sir?”
“I’m afraid this wand might be too demanding, Miss. You see, this wand is made of sycamore wood and a Phoenix feather core. These two, individually, are already a handful, but together, they constitute a hazard.” He paced up and down the aisles, probably looking for a better fit while toying with the box between his fingers. “The sycamore makes a questing wand, eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. This is not the kind of wand that accepts to be treated as a third arm, and it will show this. If this wand is used in mundane ways for too long, it will burst into flames. The wand always chooses the wizard, Miss Middleton. Moreover, this wand wood chooses an owner who is vital, curious, and adventurous. When this wand and the right owner pair up, wonders will never cease. It will demonstrate a capacity to learn and adapt that earns it a rightful place among the world’s most highly-prized wand woods.” With a defeated sigh, he made his way back towards the Middletons and Professor Flitwick.
“So this wand gets bored easily? It won’t make coffee or do some of the simple Charms that Professor Flitwick showed me?” Magdalene inquired a hint of disappointment.
“Oh, it will… But if this becomes its primary purpose, then I’m afraid you’ll have to come back to me for a new wand…”
“What about the Phoenix feather? What does it do?” Magdalene asked, as her father took a seat on the chair next to her, and her mother stepped close behind her and placed a hand on her shoulder.
“The Phoenix feather is the rarest of wand cores. You must understand that each wand has a magical animal part inside. Unicorn hair and dragon heartstring are commonly used. And then, there comes the Phoenix feather.” He began, but was interrupted by her gasp.
“Unicorns and dragons exist?” She marvelled, more to herself than for anyone’s interest.
“They are, yes. But not to worry, no dragons are allowed anywhere near Hogwarts.” Professor Flitwick added the latter part in order to quell the worry that had taken over the parents’ features.
Ollivander quickly hid his irritation at the interruption and continued. “Phoenix feathers are capable of the greatest range of magic, though they may take longer than either unicorn or dragon cores to reveal this. They show the most initiative, sometimes acting of their own accord, a quality that many witches and wizards dislike. Phoenix feather wands are always the fussiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won.”
“Will that mean that I’m going to have more difficulties than someone with a Unicorn hair wand?” Magdalene worried, biting her bottom lip.
“No. However, this wand puts pressure on you to accomplish great things, Miss Middleton. Great things indeed. I suggest you came back next year, when you’re next in Diagon Alley, for me to see if the wand is truly adequate or if it is a mere fluke.”
And she did. She went back to Ollivander’s every year since, making sure that her wand was nowhere near bursting into flames. Ollivander had been quite intrigued to know that she had been sorted into Slytherin, but she thought nothing of it. That day, there was already a client and Magdalene would recognise that mass of dirty blonde hair anywhere.
“Good morning, Luna. Mr. Ollivander,” she greeted, nodding at the old man.
“Oh, good morning Maggie,” Luna greeted her softly. “You’re coming back to Hogwarts for your N.E. ?”
“Yep!” She confirmed, making the ‘p’ pop.
“Did you lose your wand?” She inquired with a tilt of her head.
Mr. Ollivander beat Magdalene at answering. “No, it would never happen to little Miss Middleton, right here. Each start of year, she comes to my store to make me check her wand. She is very careful with it; the wand’s allegiance to her is unbreakable as I tell her each year.”
“Thank you for believing in me, the first time I came here. It has proven a stronger ally than I could have dreamed of,” she said and leaned back on the counter. “What about you, Luna? Any wand problems?”
“No, it’s just that the new one doesn’t work like my first wand, I need to test other wands. Wand lore seems like a fascinating subject,” she murmured as she examined the wand that she had in hand.
“I think so too, maybe I’ll open a Middleton’s,” Magdalene mused, “it would be the most gratifying work that exists, seeing all those fascinated eleven year olds trying out their first wands…”
“I think so too,” she muttered distractedly before flicking a new wand, making a clumsy Patronus of what might have looked like a bunny appear.
“Not this one, then?” Ollivander asked as he put down Magdalene’s wand on the counter.
Just then, the bell rang and three blond heads entered: a young man, a young woman, and a middle-aged woman. All of them were wearing chic, expensive clothing. Magdalene recognised them as the Malfoys, minus the father. She would have liked to express her discontent to the Malfoy son but his mother had always intimidated her, and his cousin might just tear out her throat or worse. She turned to Luna for them not to see her face.
“Mrs. Malfoy, what a pleasant surprise!” Ollivander greeted them, abandoning his search for a potential wand for the blonde Ravenclaw. “How can I help you?”
Draco got closer to the counter and spoke before his mother. “I need a wand, Mr. Ollivander.”
“Do you, boy?” He muttered without further questioning it.
“Similar to my first one in shape, if possible.” His voice sounded strained.
“Of course, of course let me just…” he trailed off, disappearing behind newly stocked shelves.
“Hey, Loony,” Victoria chimed smugly, “wand problems?”
“Oh, not as big as Draco’s but, yes,” she absentmindedly replied, unaware of Malfoy’s sarcasm.
“Isn’t this dear Middleton, though?” She teased, poking the girl’s shoulder.
Maggie readied her forced smile and turned around —Narcissa was probably waiting for them outside— “Hello, Victoria,” she said sweetly, “how are you by this oh-so good morning?”
“Feeling just as murderous as you must be,” she fumed, earning a sneer from the boy.
Magdalene raised an eyebrow at Draco before speaking to Victoria. “I see he’s told you what his smart mouth brought on us.”
“Oh, yes,” she ranted, “I nearly killed him.”
“We’ve got business to attend to, Victoria, if you don’t mind.” Draco narrowed his eyes at his cousin
“So what?” She shrugged, earning a glare. “Don’t you glare at me, Draco Malfoy, I can use magic at Hogwarts and you won’t like what you’ll see.”
He merely blinked at her. “Really? What’s the worst that you can do? Stun me to death?”
“I can try,” she persisted with a decisive nod.
“Will you try these, sir?” Ollivander interrupted them, putting five long rectangular boxes on the counter.
Draco tried wand after wand and then examined every single one closely before lifting up the shortest.
“What is this made of?” Draco asked.
“Hawthorn and Dragon heartstring, sir.”
“How long does it take to make a wand?” Maggie interjected, making all eyes turn to her.
“About three weeks, Miss,” he responded.
“Make a wand identical to his first and send it to Hogwarts, he’ll try both and send the less effective back to you, if that’s all right with you,” she requested.
Ollivander nodded slowly. “This might work, though I’ll need to find a good enough unicorn for the hair. And I do believe the tree I got the wood from is still standing…” he trailed off, putting away the four other wands.
“How do you know so much about wands?” Victoria asked, while Draco fished for Galleons in his robes.
“I took wand lore in sixth year,” Magdalene explained. “Is my wand all right, sir?”
“Of course, of course young lady. You may have it back.”
“Thanks, I’m rather late; in fact I should be going.” She grabbed her wand. “Later, Luna. I’ll see you next year, Mr. Ollivander.” She turned to the other two and nodded “Malfoys.”
“Later, Middleton,” Victoria nodded her farewell.
She exited the shop and continued her shopping while the Malfoys went to look for new cloaks. Victoria, as usual, was easy to satisfy. Draco, on the other hand, acted like Draco Malfoy.
“This cloak is too wide,” he complained, widening his arms like a bat.
“For heaven’s sake, Draco, it’s a cloak!” Victoria whined.
“A cloak that makes me look half-giant,” he reiterated.
“Don’t be such a baby, come on we’ll miss the train now!” She hissed menacingly.
He ignored her pointedly. “It’s only nine forty-five.”
“We still have to go to Flourish & Blotts’ and get potions supplies, you insufferable—!”
“Language,” the warning came from both mother and son.
“Sorry, Aunt Cissy, but you’ll be okay with me saying that he’s making a fuss out of nothing.” she stated matter-of-factly.
“As much as I hate to admit it, you are being insufferable today, Draco.” Narcissa remarked, a half-apologetic glint in her eyes.
He pressed his lips together. “Fine, these are fine, then,” he surrendered.
“Thank Merlin it’s over!” Victoria gloated on their way out, earning a glare from Draco.
The rest of the morning went without further events, and the three Malfoys arrived at the platform at ten minutes to eleven. Draco scanned the crowd, looking for Blaise or Pansy, while Victoria looked for Daphne and Theo. When the time came to embark, and neither had found their peers, they settled on saying their farewells to Narcissa.
Narcissa took Victoria aside. “Be safe, all right? And please, be there for Draco. He will never admit it, but he needs all the support he can get.”
“I will, Aunt Cissy,” Victoria murmured, out of Draco’s earshot.
Narcissa placed a hand on her niece’s left cheek. “I’m going to miss you so much.”
“We’ll miss you even more,” she replied before kissing the top of her head. “Try and visit Andromeda, please… You only have each other now, and there’s no reason to hold on to that old quarrel. Not to mention that if Uncle Lucius’s trial goes wrong, you’ll have somewhere to go if they decide to seize the Manor.”
Narcissa studied her niece before giving her a slow nod and a hug. She then approached her son with nearly the same instructions she had just given to Victoria.
“I love you,” he whispered finally.
“I love you too, I love you both,” she murmured. “Go now, you don’t want to be late.”
Draco held out his arm for Victoria. “It’s now or never, if you want to back out,” he challenged.
She grabbed the crease of his elbow determinedly. “You wish,” she retorted.
They hop into the train, Draco leading the way, looking for familiar faces. They end up settling on a seemingly empty compartment.
“Where do you think Blaise is?” Victoria asked.
Before Draco could answer, and as she sat down, a black cat hissed at the both of them, making Victoria give out a squeak and Draco curse under his breath. That cat, they recognised to be Magdalene’s, since it had spent most of its life in the Slytherin common room.
“What the bloody hell is this fleabag doing here?!” Victoria snapped, making the cat leave the compartment.
Draco raised an eyebrow. “I thought you were the pacifist one?”
“Not when a cat surprises my behind, thank you very much,” she protested, dusting her white trousers of cat hair. Hearing a snort, she glared at Draco, “Help me, instead of mocking me, you useless twat!”
Just as he pulled out his wand, the compartment opened to reveal Blaise and Magdalene coming in, their arms charged with sweets. They stopped abruptly, making a liquorice wand and two Chocolate Frog boxes fall on the floor. For the Malfoys, that was a sight to behold: Blaise Zabini, the most poised and aristocratic Slytherin in their year, joking around with the Muggle-Born who was the most out-of-place in their common room, their arms overflowing with candy and the trace of laughter still on their faces. The latter pair was just as shocked to witness the Malfoys in their compartment, Victoria displaying her backside to Draco who had his wand out.
“Well… This could have gone much better.” Blaise stated, taking a seat near the window, facing Draco, and unloading his arms to his right.
“Where’s Shyvana?” Magdalene asked, looking around for her cat.
“Your fleabag almost ruined my designer robes. This vest is cashmere, Middleton, if I see one black hair on it, you’ll have to reimburse it,” Victoria thundered, pulling out her own wand and attempting to Scrougify her trousers.
Maggie raised her eyebrows at the statement and dropped her load atop Blaise’s, in the middle of the seat. She then tiptoed to retrieve her trunk and shouldered her bag.
“What exactly are you doing?” Blaise asked, glaring at Draco’s disapproving look.
“I’m going to look for Shyvana.” She stated simply, struggling to lift her trunk.
“And you need your luggage because..?” He trailed off, standing up.
“Because I’m going to settle wherever my cat went.”
“And why is that?” Victoria demanded, sitting next to Draco and helping herself to a bag of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.
“Because it is easier to leave than to kick intruders out of the compartment that I found.” Magdalene snapped bitterly.
“You’ll do no such thing, Maggie.” Blaise stated calmly.
“Maggie?” Both Malfoys repeated, flummoxed.
“Magdalene found the compartment, invited me to stay with her, and suggested that we caught up with the trolley lady to have a sweet feast. We were on our way back when you lot started complaining about cat hair and cashmere.”
Blaise had never sounded so… emotional. The Zabini heir was always composed and passive, and this was uncharacteristic behaviour. He turned to Maggie, who was still trying to fit her trunk out the partially opened door and levitated the trunk out of her grasp and back into the compartment. She glared at him and he gave her a stern look, which made her sit down opposite Victoria, who looked completely unbothered, albeit confused by the situation. Draco hid his shock well, but questioned Blaise with his squinting eyes.
“Your cat will come back, it always does,” Blaise murmured reassuringly as he handed her a Chocolate Frog.
“You owe me, Zabini.” She pouted, but still accepted the sweet that she began munching on, like an upset toddler.
Blaise stifled a snort as he turned to Draco. “What?”
“Since when are you two so cosy with one another?” Victoria spoke the words out of Draco’s mind.
“Since… third year, was it?” Blaise frowned at Magdalene when she ignored him. He tsk'ed and nodded at the blond pair. “Yes, since third year.”
“And you never thought to mention it?” Draco spat bitterly, folding his arms over his chest.
“Don’t be so bitter, Draco, here have a liquorice wand,” Victoria cooed mockingly, dangling a wand under his nose.
Blaise snorted in amusement, knowing that Draco would die before he brought a liquorice wand anywhere near his taste buds again. It had become common knowledge one night, when they were seven that Draco and liquorice never matched.
October 31st, 1987
Blaise had always loved visiting his paternal grandfather, if for nothing else than he knew he’d always be welcome at the Zabini manor despite what his mother had most certainly done to his father. That year, young Blaise had managed to convince his grandfather to invite his friends over for Halloween, and so it was that the Malfoys, the Greengrass girls, Theodore Nott, and Pansy Parkinson were running around the Zabini estate, collecting as much sweets as they could. Since the estate was nowhere near having neighbours, the sweets had been hidden in the maze-like gardens by the house elves. With the last piece of candy in tow, they all retreated to Blaise’s room to compare and swap their findings.
“Hey, I have an idea!” Theo exclaimed as he removed a grass blade from yet another pack of Every Flavour Beans. “How about we put together all of our beans with weird colours, like grey, and stuff, and we dare each other to eat one?”
“But that would be stupid and disgusting,” Victoria remarked, opening a Chocolate Frog. “I got Merlin again, who wants to swap?”
“Me!” Astoria Greengrass chimed, “I got Salazar Slytherin again, I’ve got six of him already.”
“Done! I almost got all four founders, I’m only missing—”
Draco interrupted her. “What do we win if we can eat every weird bean we get?”
Theo pondered for a moment before his eyes snapped back to reality. “If you can’t swallow it whole, you have to put one of your sweets in the middle, and if you can, you can take whichever one you want from the middle until we finish them.”
And so the game began. Victoria and Daphne suffered the most losses, while Draco and Theo displayed their winnings proudly. The game went on until only two identical beans remained. They were black, glistening with challenge.
Theodore and Draco never left each other’s eyes as each one lifted a bean. “What’d you think?” Draco smirked. “I’d say sewer.”
“Rat fur.” Theo challenged.
“Three… Two… One… EAT!” The onlookers did the countdown and were astonished to see opposing reactions.
Theo looked as though he thoroughly enjoyed the taste. Draco, on the other hand, was all but scraping his tongue and nearly crying with disgust.
“What did he get? Was it sewer?”
“No, it was clearly rat’s fur, look at his face!”
Blaise took one of the empty boxes and read the taste guide. After scanning the paper briefly, he roared with laughter. Piqued by curiosity, Victoria tore the paper from his hand, and soon joined him, and they were both in tears by the time everyone learned that Draco had made a fool of himself for a liquorice-flavoured bean. Theo claimed that that had always been his sweetest victory, and Draco would resent anyone who brought back that memory.
September 1st, 1998
Blaise smirked at the memory before replying to Draco’s last question. “Had I mentioned it, you would have forfeited a lifetime of friendship over petty prejudices.”
Draco fumed in his corner, slouching in his seat and watching the landscapes fly by as the train sped to Scotland. Victoria noticed that tension that threatened to settle and quickly thought of an idea.
“Blaise,” she spoke. He turned to her and noticed the gleam of mischief in her eyes. “Want to play with beans?”
Blaise’s smirk grew into a wide grin. “Only if you manage to get Draco to play.”
The latter huffed, and Magdalene seemed suddenly interested. “How’d you play with beans?”
“We put all the suspicious-looking ones in the middle and take turns eating them. If we can’t swallow them whole, we have to relinquish one of our sweets, and if we can, we get to take one of the losses. It’s a game full of stories, and a good way to bond.” Blaise added the last fact eyeing Draco meaningfully.
“Draco, how about you played with us?” Victoria suggested mock-innocently.
He raised an eyebrow at her as though meaning to say “Really?” and turned back to the window.
“Malfoy is too scared to play,” Magdalene stated, as she opened a pack of beans and selected those for the game.
“Do you genuinely believe that this is going to work on me? You can challenge a Gryffindor that way, not me.” He huffed.
“Of course, because you’re much better, moping like a child.” Magdalene mused.
The three willing players took turns playing, Victoria relinquishing one good bean when she found herself eating an earwax-flavoured horror, and when Draco’s turn came, everyone turned to him expectantly.
“What?” He hissed.
“Come on, don’t be such a prick,” Victoria encouraged, handing him a white bean.
Draco eyed the bean suspiciously before surrendering and tearing it from Victoria’s hand. He chewed it tentatively before nodding. “Vanilla.”
“Now was that so hard?” Blaise teased.
“Sod off.”
And so, the unlikely friends played on until they arrived at Hogwarts, and the group split into two once they left the train.
A/N: About the wand stuff that Ollivander said in the first flashback, I took the information from my own wand in Pottermore, and some sentences I copied verbatim. So, yeah, I hope you enjoyed the long chapter.
