Like, I bet he brings a pretty potted plant as a thank you gift for hosting him, helps prepare dinner, cleans up after, pulls out the chair for his partner...

My thoughts on Leander Prewett meeting his partners parents for the first time... He would be an absolute anxious mess beforehand, and after, and during the entire affair (internally). Outwardly though, once that front door opened and he was standing face to face with the folks who had brought his favorite person into the world and brought them up to be who they are - he would be polite and kind and gracious and appear confident. Ever-prepared, He would grill his partner about EVERYTHING to do with them. What do they do for work? For How Long? Are they allergic to anything? (for his host gift, obviously.) What are their hobbies? What do they hate? Until his partner soothed him with a kiss, along with the comforting assurance that they would love him, to calm his stammering questions of panicked preparation. He would absolutely never show up empty-handed, his mother taught him better than that. Though it would not be just a run of the mill nice bottle of wine, (he would bring that too, to share after dinner.) No, he would go above and beyond, to not only prove himself as a person, but as evidence of how he listened to their child as a partner. "Your son/daughter mentioned you've recently gotten into ferns, Mrs. [SoandSo], I repotted this from my mothers garden, from one herbologist to another, I do hope you like it." "Mr. [SoandSo]! I hear you're a fan of the written word, I picked up this copy of [very nice edition of classic book], Thought you might like to add it to your collection." And yes, He absolutely would be the perfect gentleman (as he is all of the time). Opening doors, pulling out chairs, helping prepare dinner, helping clean up dinner, etc. etc. He would be extremely polite throughout the entire ordeal, genuinely complimenting everything about them and their home. Their house, their clothes, the meal, but especially, their kid -- his partner. It would not just be "Yes, they're great. I love them." It would be ranting and raving, ecstatic praise of everything he loves about them. "You should have seen them on the quidditch pitch in their match against Ravenclaw. Breathtaking, really." "Their alihotsy in herbology was the best in class. Think it could stand against Professor Garlick's truthfully."

ALL IN ALL

He would be nervous, as most people would be, but he would be his normal GOOD BOY self, and we love him dearly for it. A gentleperson and a scholar.

What do you think Van's relationship with religion is like, before and after the crash?

hey!! I love this question because I actually have a whole hc for this!!!

pre-crash I hc that Van was raised catholic and went through catechism (with Nat & Laura Lee). I think she partially did confirmation because of family pressure, but also because I think she has always been someone who searches for meaning in the world around her, and I think she looked to the church as a way to find that meaning as a kid because it was all she knew. (I think Van's parents were probably more along the lines non-practicing catholics, and only really went to mass for major holidays, but they still really pushed for her to get confirmed to keep up appearances with extended family).

I think Van left the church sometime in middle school after she fully realized / came to terms with being a lesbian. (I personally hc that Van's dad left when she was 12 or 13 and her mom's issues got worse after, so she also didn't have the same family pressure to stay in the church). however, I believe she still held onto some of the mysticism of the church / saint lore, etc. she grew up with and she more was rejecting an organized religion she knew wouldn't accept her, rather than all of the beliefs (though I don't think she would necessarily admit that to herself).

as far as immediately pre-crash, I think Van probably used humor to cope and deflect from any religious trauma by high school and probably would have described herself as a recovered catholic / atheist, if it ever came up.

I also think having that common background of being raised catholic and rejecting that upbringing was something she bonded over with Taissa pre-crash (it's canon that at least Tai's grandmother was catholic). I can definitely picture them being their sarcastic selves together and making quips back and forth through an entire Christmas Eve midnight mass they both got dragged to.

I also think having that common background adds some additional context to their fight in the attic in S1E10. like if rejecting religion and supernatural explanations for the world around them, is something they bonded over, there's an added layer there when Van suddenly believes in this supernatural thing and Taissa is still firmly an atheist.

(I could write a whole thesis separate thesis here on why it makes so sense that Van believed so fervently in the supernatural element and embraced the cult practices as a way to make sense of that terrifying time in the wilderness, assuming a catholic upbringing. tldr: in my personal experience, it's fairly common for people who have dealt with specifically catholic religious trauma to be more susceptible to that type of influence because of the beliefs we were raised with).

anyway, post-crash I think Van struggled a lot to cope with the things they did in the wilderness and kind of just completely shut off all belief in anything instead of actually facing what they did. I also think she's going to go back to her belief in the wilderness after being cured of cancer in S3 because she never actually worked through any of her trauma, and therefore, is still very susceptible to falling back into that acolyte role.

also, if the crash never happened, I think Van would've been the type of recovered catholic who gets into like spirituality as a way to make sense of the world (tarot cards, astrology, etc.)

tldr: I think Van was raised catholic but is an atheist both pre and post-crash

so i was just watching ouat clips on youtube and i got to the one in 2x08 where henry wakes up after talking to aurora in the fire room and you can see david and regina both wake up after falling asleep watching henry, and it really made me think about how at that point in the series they absolutely still saw each other as threats to each other so them being able to do that says so much to me about where their relationship must have been. this wasn’t too long after 2x05 when daniel came back, so david’s already seen her at an incredibly vulnerable point in her life, arguably more than any time he’s ever seen her before. he’s exhausted trying to find a way back to snow and emma, keep the town in line, and keep henry from doing anything stupid. regina’s exhausted dealing with the aftermath of the curse breaking, everything with henry, and then just having to kill her first love. and they don’t have much in common, have every reason to hate each other, but they’re able to come together for henry, for his safety and security. i imagine they both waited for him to fall asleep to start talking, and of course it’s david who starts the conversation because regina is more than happy to sit in silence and act as though he doesn’t exist. he talks about henry, what he’s been up to when regina isn’t there and that’s easy for her to discuss, it’s safe, it’s henry. and they talk for a while about nothing before he can’t help himself anymore and asks about daniel, about what their lives were like before snow and the king and the curse. if she’d had a little more rest regina would’ve shut down the topic before it even started, but she’s exhausted and worried out of her mind and he’s the first person to really ask (snow never wondered what her life was like before, never cared) so she tells him about daniel, about the life she really wanted with him and the story of how she got the scar on her lip, and in turn he tells her about his farm and his mother and that he didn’t really want to live like this either, that they aren’t as different as they think. regina’s quiet, practically asleep to the lullaby of lives never lived, and she whispers to him that she knows she’s evil because she doesn’t regret anything because it got her henry, and david goes quiet himself, let’s the confession sit in the air for a moment before he tells her that she would’ve been a great shepherd, but she’s an even better mother. and regina’s eyes well with tears when she tells him he makes a decent prince, but he’ll make an even better father. and it’s this conversation, that doesn’t change anything but explains so much, that under any other circumstances would’ve never happened, that lets them take their walls down enough to fall asleep in the same room.

had a whole thought about my fanon Sheriff backstory for season 2 empires the other day because I moved on from my esmp cultures document to my esmp Emperors background document and I couldn’t decide if I wanted completely human Sheriff who is is only being bullied, or animated doll construct that was created to be the towns sheriff and who is beloved and who Joel bullies because he has an inferiority complex and also is a hypocrite. 

What I finally settled on what the in between concept I had. Jimmy was born and raised human in Tumble Town. Got into some trouble as a teen and pissed off a witch/wizard some magical fucker who killed him and reanimated him by placing his soul into a life sized doll. Jimmy is enchanted to appear human to most people, even himself. There are inconsistencies if you see him in your peripherals. But even if someone does notice the magic itself is physically forcing Jimmy to mentally  not be able to handle the idea of being a construct. Joel is experienced with constructs, per my own fanon for him as well, plus being a god. He sees right through the magic making Jimmy look human, only seeing the doll. Scott just as well can see the doll through the visage thanks to his magic eye. Bets are out on who else can see it and who else is just fucking w/ him because Joel is.

*sweats nervously* so... I'm an angst author and I really like that angst... *sweats harder* okay but seriously. Besides joking that Takasugi threw Gintoki into the river as a child and Gintoki almost drowned, and besides the reasoning being purely comical/metaphorical (which are all good too btw I love all hc about this) I personally like to write more of a trauma direction, focusing less on Gintoki having a fear of water (cause he will get in the water with a floatie) and more a fear of drowning/the sensations that come with swimming. (from watching people die, watching people drown on their own blood, from possible torture methods during his prison stay cause of course I'm a fan of waterboarding, or even just from the emotional sensation of what he had to do at the end of the war feeling like hes drifting away) and putting that into a combo of not being able to really swim in the first place and having 0 desire to improve himself until much later when he relearns self love (which fits into your metaphor of him choosing NOT to do it) he just... never learned to swim because its bad vibes. And every time he gets in water he decides 'Nows Not A Good Time To Learn To Swim' because chaos is usually ensuing.
