Because I was leaving comments on @jayjay-thejet-plane's work over on AO3 (when it let me stay logged in, JFC) I remembered the horrific experience of getting my tongue pierced back in the 90s and how I passed out afterwards, which I said would make a funny Meet Ugly. Referring to Tattoo artist Bradley because we need ALL the AUs.
TW: Blood.
“How do you feel about having Mikey do it? He’s new to piercing but he’s one of our experienced tattoo artists.”
“Got to learn somehow I guess right?” Jake asks.
“Thanks man, appreciate it,” a guy, obviously Mikey, says, reaching out for a fist bump and Jake obliges, throws a grin over his shoulder to Javy who had bet him good money that he couldn’t and wouldn’t get his tongue pierced. Javy is in fact paying for the privilege of Jake getting his first piercing. He’s walked through the procedure, shown the instruments and he listens intently, tries to ignore the needle and clamp. Then there are the aftercare instructions and what he does and doesn’t need to do to keep it from getting infected. Okay. It’s not rocket science. He can do this.
He’s never had anything pierced before, isn’t quite sure what it’s meant to feel like and he can’t really ask with his mouth wide open like it is, tongue pinched in the clamp and it reminds him vaguely of the dentist, when they ask you a question and you try and answer while your mouth is stretched open. Then there’s a count of three and blindingly hot pain and a flood of wetness in his mouth and he looks up to see Mikey looking at him wide-eyed. Then the hot pressure in his tongue is gone and he feels a little light headed, reaches up to wipe his chin where he can feel the wetness dribbling out of his mouth and when he sees blood the light-headedness intensifies and he swallows, tasting nothing but the sharp tang of his own blood and then his world fades to black.
“I got him.”
“Jesus that’s a lot of blood…”
“Go! Get Bradley!”
“Rooster!”
Jake wonders woozily why they need a barnyard animal, if maybe the blood loss will help in some type of ritual. His grandma was always warning him about shit like that.
He hears the heavy approach of boots, but his eyes feel heavy, can’t open and focus and at least the chair he’s in is comfortable.
“Holy shit, it looks like a murder scene in here. What did you do?”
“Uh…”
There’s movement and rustling noises and he can feel hands on his face, then a damp cloth and he presses into the hand cupping his jaw. It’s nice and cool against the heated skin of his face and he hums appreciatively.
“Mikey…”
“Slipped and went through the transverse muscle on a diagonal.”
“So not vertical.”
“Nope.”
“Well fuck…”
Jake forces his eyes open and looks up, his vision a little blurry, but there’s a guy standing in front of him and the first thing he notices is the moustache, tries to reach up to pat it but the guy pulls away and Jake thinks he’s frowning.
“Looks fuzzy…”
“Is he on something?” the guy with the moustache asks.
“No…” Javy answers for him.
“Okay…”
“It’s a caterpillar… fuzzy.”
There’s a few snorts or what Jake thinks might be amusement, he’s starting to feel a bit more normal and the hand is still on his face and he looks to it, notices the tattoos. His eyes are now able to focus, and his gaze travels up the arm, it’s nicely muscled and notes the black tank with the bronco logo, the mosquito caught in amber on a chain around the guys neck and oh, the arm is attached to the guy with the moustache.
“Hi…”
“Hi there gorgeous. You back with us?”
Jake nods, feels the hand flex a little on his face and he nods slowly.
“Now, you want to try again?”
Jake nods, and this time he’s sat up first, given some water to rinse out his mouth before settling back again, somehow less nervous. Moustache guy has introduced himself as Bradley, and Mikey hasn’t stopped apologising for the slip, and Jake doesn’t care, can’t really focus on much more than Bradley’s intense gaze on him as he reopens new packets of sanitised equipment.
It goes much better this time around, not painful, well, not compared to the first time. Then Bradley’s removing his fingers from his mouth and Jake swallows, wonders if intense eye contact is part of the tongue piercing package.
“Want to get an ice cream? I know a place. Be good for your tongue.”
“Yeah? That your professional opinion?” Jake asks, and it feels weird, the metal bar knocking around in his mouth, tongue definitely feeling tender and swollen.
“Sure is. And I should stay with you. Just in case you pass out again.”
“Well, I wouldn’t want to stop you from doing your due diligence.”
Bradley gives him a slow smirk and yeah, Jake thinks he’s going to like him.

How DOES the C preprocessor create two generations of completely asinine programmers??
oh man hahah oh maaan. ok, this won't be very approachable.
i don't recall what point i was trying to make with the whole "two generations" part but ill take this opportunity to justifiably hate on the preprocessor, holy fuck the amount of damage it has caused on software is immeasurable, if you ever thought computer programmers were smart people on principle...
the cpp:
there are like forty preprocessor directives, and they all inject a truly mind-boggling amount of vicious design problems and have done so for longer than ive been alive. there really only ever needed to be one: #include , if only to save you the trouble of manually having to copy header files in full & paste them at the top of your code. and christ almighty, we couldn't even get that right. C (c89) has way, waaaay fewer keywords than any other language. theres like 30, and half of those aren't ever used, have no meaning or impact in the 21st century (shit like "register" and "auto"). and C programmers still fail to understand all of them properly, specifically "static" (used in a global context) which marks some symbol as inelligible to be touched externally (e.g. you can't use "extern" to access it). the whole fucking point of static is to make #include'd headers rational, to have a clear seperation between external, intended-to-be-accessed API symbols, and internal, opaque shit. nobody bothers. it's all there, out in the open, if you #include something, you get all of it, and brother, this is only the beginning, you also get all of its preprocessor garbage.
this is where the hell begins:
#if #else
hey, do these look familiar? we already fucking have if/else. do you know what is hard to understand? perfectly minimally written if/else logic, in long functions. do you know what is nearly impossible to understand? poorly written if/else rats nests (which is what you find 99% of the time). do you know what is completely impossible to understand? that same poorly-written procedural if/else rat's nest code that itself is is subject to another higher-order if/else logic.
it's important to remember that the cpp is a glorified search/replace. in all it's terrifying glory it fucking looks to be turing complete, hell, im sure the C++ preprocessor is turing complete, the irony of this shouldn't be lost on you. if you have some long if/else logic you're trying to understand, that itself is is subject to cpp #if/#else, the logical step would be to run the cpp and get the output pure C and work from there, do you know how to do that? you open the gcc or llvm/clang man page, and your tty session's mem usage quadruples. great job idiot. trying figuring out how to do that in the following eight thousand pages. and even if you do, you're going to be running the #includes, and your output "pure C" file (bereft of cpp logic) is going to be like 40k lines. lol.
the worst is yet to come:
#define #ifdef #ifndef (<- WTF) #undef you can define shit. you can define "anything". you can pick a name, whatever, and you can "define it". full stop. "#define foo". or, you can give it a value: "#define foo 1". and of course, you can define it as a function: "#define foo(x) return x". wow. xzibit would be proud. you dog, we heard you wanted to kill yourself, so we put a programming language in your programming language.
the function-defines are pretty lol purely in concept. when you find them in the wild, they will always look something like this:
#define foo(x,y) \ (((x << y)) * (x))
i've seen up to seven parens in a row. why? because since cpp is, again, just a fucking find&replace, you never think about operator precedence and that leads to hilarious antipaterns like the classic
#define min(x,y) a < b ? a : b
which will just stick "a < b ? a: b" ternary statement wherever min(.. is used. just raw text replacement. it never works. you always get bitten by operator precedence.
the absolute worst is just the bare defines:
#define NO_ASN1 #define POSIX_SUPPORTED #define NO_POSIX
etc. etc. how could this be worse? first of all, what the fuck are any of these things. did they exist before? they do now. what are they defined as? probably just "1" internally, but that isn't the point, the philosophy here is the problem. back in reality, in C, you can't just do something like "x = 0;" out of nowhere, because you've never declared x. you've never given it a type. similar, you can't read its value, you'll get a similar compiler error. but cpp macros just suddenly exist, until they suddenly don't. ifdef? ifndef? (if not defined). no matter what, every permutation of these will have a "valid answer" and will run without problem. let me demonstrate how this fucks things up.
do you remember "heartbleed" ? the "big" openssl vulnerability ? probably about a decade ago now. i'm choosing this one specifically, since, for some reason, it was the first in an annoying trend for vulns to be given catchy nicknames, slick websites, logos, cable news coverage, etc. even though it was only a moderate vulnerability in the grand scheme of things...
(holy shit, libssl has had huge numbers of remote root vulns in the past, which is way fucking worse, heartbleed only gave you a random sampling of a tiny bit of internal memory, only after heavy ticking -- and nowadays, god, some of the chinese bluetooth shit would make your eyeballs explode if you saw it; a popular bt RF PHY chip can be hijacked and somehow made to rewrite some uefi ROMs and even, i think, the microcode on some intel chips)
anyways, heartbleed, yeah, so it's a great example since you could blame it two-fold on the cpp. it involved a generic bounds-checking failure, buf underflow, standard shit, but that wasn't due to carelessness (don't get me wrong, libssl is some of the worst code in existence) but because the flawed cpp logic resulted in code that:
A.) was de-facto worthless in definition B.) a combination of code supporting ancient crap. i'm older than most of you, and heartbleed happened early in my undergrad. the related legacy support code in question hadn't been relevant since clinton was in office.
to summarize, it had to do with DTLS heartbeats. DTLS involves handling TLS (or SSLv3, as it was then, in the 90s) only over UDP. that is how old we're talking. and this code was compiled into libssl in the early 2010s -- when TLS had been the standard for a while. TLS (unlike SSLv3 & predecessors) runs over TCP only. having "DTLS heartbeat support in TLS does not make sense by definition. it is like drawing a triangle on a piece of paper whose angles don't add up to 180.
how the fuck did that happen? the preprocessor.
why the fuck was code from last century ending up compiled in? who else but!! the fucking preprocessor. some shit like:
#ifndef TCP_SUPPORT <some crap related to UDP heartbeats> #endif ... #ifndef NO_UDP_ONLY <some TCP specific crap> #endif
the header responsible for defining these macros wasn't included, so the answer to BOTH of these "if not defined" blocks is true! because they were never defined!! do you see?
you don't have to trust my worldview on this. have you ever tried to compile some code that uses autoconf/automake as a build system? do you know what every single person i've spoken to refers to these as? autohell, for automatic hell. autohell lives and dies on cpp macros, and you can see firsthand how well that works. almost all my C code has the following compile process:
"$ make". done. Makefile length: 20 lines.
the worst i've ever deviated was having a configure script (probably 40 lines) that had to be rune before make. what about autohell? jesus, these days most autohell-cursed code does all their shit in a huge meta-wrapper bash script (autogen.sh), but short of that, if you decode the forty fucking page INSTALL doc, you end up with:
$ automake (fails, some shit like "AUTOMAKE_1.13 or higher is required) $ autoconf (fails, some shit like "AUTOMCONF_1.12 or lower is required) $ aclocal (fails, ???) $ libtoolize (doesn't fail, but screws up the tree in a way that not even a `make clean` fixes $ ???????? (pull hair out, google) $ autoreconf -i (the magic word) $ ./configure (takes eighty minutes and generates GBs of intermediaries) $ make (runs in 2 seconds)
in conclusion: roflcopter

I’m rewatching Voltron rn (since I was thinking back and all I could remember apart from the names of all the characters was that one monsters and mana episode) and I’m only like three episodes in but I LOVE it
one thing though-
why has no one written a isekai fic for Voltron?? I would eat that shit UP
(this is all based off the vague memories I have of the show when I first watched it, so apologies if something’s are wrong)
imagine just waking up as a newborn but you fully remeber your old life, including watching Voltron. You can practically FEEL that something is off about this world compared to the memories of your previous life, but you don’t know what until you see a sign for Garrison recruitment.
Holy shit you’re in Voltron.
You have absolutely no clue what to do, because if any isekai trope is to go by, you’re going to get dragged into the events of the show, even if you haven’t seen anyone you recognize yet.
so you prepare. Better to be safe than sorry. You research outer space, you study how to pilot, you get your hands on whatever books you can about tech and try to get familiar with how to use it, and most importantly, you learn medical procedures and how to deal with situations quickly.
the healing pods aren’t always available in the show, the castle loses power or the paladins are just too far away to get to them.
mind you, you start this all at like age 4, so your parents are probably a little concerned. But you seem content with it, and what parent would stop their child from reading?
then your parents enroll you in Garrison, without your knowledge. Not that you were mad exactly, but you were unsure if you were going to try and stay under the radar or not. Now you have no choice.
you keep your head down most of the time, praying none of the paladins show up. They don’t, at least not your first few years. It’s your third year that you spot Keith, in the freshman class.
surprise surprise, somehow your class is shifted to help train the younger class (even though you’re barely more experienced then them? You’re seriously questioning these teachers). You, against all odds, are paired with Keith. Y’all don’t talk much outside of what’s required- Keith is Keith, and you’re still trying to figure out the best way to go about this. You ask him for a few flying tips once, since you know how good he is, but he stared at you for a while before saying “aren’t you the more experienced one?” You just shrug, and neither of you speak about it again.
It rolls around to when they get that new piloting simulator, and both classes are to use it on different days. Shiro, of course, is there, just like in show. You, by memory at this point (you can’t even count how many nights you’ve sneaked into the normal simulator to practice, or the deck to spar), ace it, soaring over everyone else’s score- and by doing that, catch Shiro’s attention.
there goes staying under the radar.
——————————————
(I’m totally going to add to this, especially as I get further into my rewatch, but this is all I can think of at the moment.)
Idk, I just feel like this idea would totally be fun and new to the Voltron corner of tumblr. Again, only in the first few episodes and most of this is relying on my really old memories of the series, so sorry if it’s wrong in places.

It’s so nice seeing you happy about something! Ride that high you deserve it >:))
i now seesaw between feeling normal (no more overthinking about inevitable disaster) and getting bursts of happiness when I remember I finally made it happen...! The other secret emotion is ruminating on what if they didn't do it right or they somehow grow back. but im trying to focus on the good...
I'm really happy! ^_^ I'm not even 100% sure on any other decisions in my life regarding gender affirming procedures....or any decision at all actually, I hate deciding. This is the one thing I knew I had to have done or I'd never be at peace until I died. And it's true bc after it was done I realized how much of my thoughts The Fear took up (and that's that ive never been uhhh actively "in danger")
everything I do now is enhanced by the procedure like that one spongebob bit like holy shit I'm doing xyz. While Sterilized. 100000% better than if this wasnt the case
#skunk mail#Anonymous#even before surgery i was like holy shit im gonna be cosplaying as thistle while sterilized#and after surgery its the same like no way thsi is so awesome. im hanging out with friends. while sterilized.#it rly is so freeing its so freeing i'd get nauseated knowing my body could do all that. degrading and humiliating. now my mind is clear

Any chance will get a sneak peek 🫣 of the new chapter today. Pretty 🤩 please 🙏
I will give you a very small sneak peek, because the chapter is... well, it's a lot.
If you need anymore proof than that, @prewettpotter's email opened with, "HOLY FUCKING SHIT, SAM!!!!!!"
Chapter Fifty-Seven: The Procedure
Ginny had been noticing it for a while now. Ron and Demelza had become friends. Good friends. He was always chatting with her, joking around with her, sitting next to her at meals. Ginny only narrowed her eyes as she watched Ron lean down to pick up his and Demelza’s brooms after practice, ready to carry them like the gentleman that he damn well wasn’t.
All Ginny could think about was Niamh. Sweet, trusting, kind Niamh who had to fall for her idiot brother. She couldn’t even remember the last time she had seen them holding hands for fuck’s sake! Niamh was always in the greenhouse with Cepheus lately, probably trying to stay away from their friendship group because Ron and Harry were annoyingly attached at the bloody hip.
A gloved hand wrapped around her neck. She turned to see Harry staring down at her, his nose red from the chilly January air. A huff escaped her lips, her eyes rolling.
Harry’s brow furrowed. “Err, are you upset? Did I do something?”
Ginny crossed her arms over her chest. “You had the gall to be best friends with a complete wanker like Ron!”
Harry’s face pulled. “Did you forget he was your brother first?”
A growl sounded in the back of her throat.
“What did he do now?” Harry asked with a sigh.
Ginny gestured wildly at Ron and Demelza. They were making their way out of the pitch, their shoulders bumping against each other’s as they talked.
“Being a pillock,” Ginny replied. “What else is new?”
Harry’s face pulled. “Do I even want to know?”
Ginny searched his face. “No.”
“Right,” Harry said in an even tone. “I’ll wait for you outside of the changing rooms, yeah?”

💬I'm curious about the New Severance fic (mainly because I don't think I've heard of that series) and the BITD Smiler BABS fic (Because...self indulgence)
*cracks knuckles* Okay, so, let's take these in order:
The Severance AU: Severance is a show on Apple TV from 2022 (though season 2 is coming out in 2025) about a bunch of workers for the Lumon Corporation who have undergone the titular procedure to "sever" their work and home selves (involves getting a computer chip inserted in your brain). Basically, an employee who gets severed has a home self (Outie) that doesn't remember anything about what they do at work, and a work self (Innie) that doesn't remember anything about their outside home life (like, they know basic stuff, but their personal lives are a complete blank). The Innies are in fact basically trapped on the basement floor they work on because the elevator that you use to access the floor also turns the chips on and off. So from their perspective, they get into the elevator at the end of the day -- and then immediately get out again and go back to work. The show follows the people in the "Macrodata Refinement" department (they sort numbers based on vibes, essentially) and their Innie and Outie selves as the Innies are shook up by new hire Helly R. and her desperate attempts to escape and the appearance of an outside self-help book on the Severed Floor, and the Outies (specifically Mark Scout) start to learn that Lumon is, uh, fucked up. Honestly, given how fucking weird the whole thing sounds (I haven't even gotten into the whole part where Lumon basically operates like a cult, or the Break Room -- which is not the room where you take a break...), I think the series might be your jam -- here's the Wikipedia page should you care to learn more.
ANYWAY -- I haven't actually SEEN the TV series, but I DID recently read "Welcome to the Panopticon," a BTTF/Severance fusion fic by @penny-anna that covers most of the relevant worldbuilding for the TV show while putting BTTF characters into their own version of the mess. I found the fic fascinating and inspiring, especially with all the Innie/Outie stuff, and my brain immediately decided two things:
One, I would love to do a Valicer AU with this fucked-up premise
Two, this kind of corporate malfeasance feels VERY Aperture Science.
Cue the mental creation of a currently-unnamed AU where Victor, Alice, and Smiler are severed workers working for the Macrodata Refinement department of Aperture Science! Victor's there because he was severely depressed after the death of his fiancee Victoria and their mutual friend Emily during a robbery and his parents talked him into it; Alice is there because she murdered Dr. Bumby, got caught (though she did at least expose him in the process), and was pushed into the program as a "rehabilitation effort" to make her a "productive citizen;" and Smiler -- well, Smiler was simply forced to have the procedure by their asshole father Dr. Kelman, who wanted them to do it as a PR move and to try and force them to bend to HIS wishes about their life. The idea would follow mainly the Innie versions of everyone as Smiler joins the team and makes it their job to try and keep them all from going insane down in that basement, with the trio gradually falling in love as they get to know each other (well, as much as they can when they're all amnesiac on the floor) and having adventures dealing with their weird-ass circumstances, their personality core supervisor Wheatley, and their unsevered boss Miss Glados (aka Caroline, one of the big movers and shakers of Aperture) --
And THEN managing to escape because of an incident involving the Overtime Contingency (which allows the Innies to wake up outside of the Severed Floor if the bosses really need them to for some reason), which allows them to wreck a party their Outies were attending with the real facts about Innie life -- and then the Outies get to see the Severed Floor, go "holy shit this is fucked up" and manage to escape when Chell shows up to cause chaos in the name of rescuing her old friend Wheatley... I mean, there's a LOT more detail in my head about what happens in this Hypothetical Fic Eating My Brain, but I want to actually get to the OTHER half of your question, so let's call it there for now. XD
BITD Smiler in BABS Verse: Okay, you've probably guessed that this relates back to when I asked you about VITD Smiler ending up in the "Beneath A Broken Sky" world and what you thought might happen with them and the cast. This version is a little different, as it involves a Smiler from a Blades In The Dark world that doesn't actually have a Victor or Alice in it, because I wanted to see how they'd react to the Victor and Alice who got sucked in without having any of their own. I haven't got like a FULL idea of how it would go yet, but I do have a few key items in place:
-->Smiler would end up in the BABS verse because, in this version of Duskwall, the moon is slowly but surely beginning to fall on the Shattered Isles and will eventually destroy everything, and Mar-Mal is trying to find a way to save their Advocates -- I'm thinking they manipulate a Special Tree to shoot Smiler to the BABS verse to "scout it out," so to speak
-->I picture the "local" Victor and Alice wanting to support their fellow dimensional refugee and checking in on them as they're getting settled -- and being perhaps a little concerned by how almost unnaturally cheerful Smiler is
-->I think it would be funny for Daniel to want to cast that spell that provides all the modern contemporary knowledge on Smiler, only for Victor and Alice to leap in and be like "don't, do you not remember all the vomiting when you did that to us" -- only for Mar-Mal, using their limited influence in the new universe through their connection to Smiler, to find the spell, go "oh, that looks useful," and cast it on Smiler anyway XD (though I'm picturing them managing to spare Smiler the vomiting -- not the fainting though, they still go down for the count)
-->I really have to wonder how Gef would react to Smiler -- I imagine it would be quite the thing XD
-->I imagine that Victor has some nasty nightmares after his experience with The Bleeding Eye (like, there's no actual contact by the creature again, Daniel's made sure of that, but Victor keeps having bad dreams about the "room" and the Thing in it -- can you blame him?), and Smiler eventually offers to help with their hypnosis skills -- Alice is immediately like "I want to observe to make sure this is on the up-and-up" and Smiler's like "Sure!" Cue Smiler helping Victor out, Alice being like "...wtf I didn't know that could be used for good," and the three getting closer as a result, with of course eventual romance
-->I want Smiler to go to OmegaMart, see the employees, and want to cheer them up -- mostly I want them to offer one a hug and the employee to be like ??? Smiler wants to improve happiness in this place damn it
-->Potential endgame is them finding a way to get Smiler back to their world, with Victor and Alice tagging along for a visit...only to discover the whole "moon falling on the world" thing and realize that Mar-Mal's plan is actually to evacuate the Advocates (and whoever else wants to come with) to the BABS world before everything, you know, gets smashed. Cue panicked race to get people through whatever gateway they got open before the end
Basically, it's just me going "I want that version of Smiler to cause Even More Shenanigans in that world" right now. XD
#ask game#Ask About My Valicer AUs#valicer#beneath a broken sky#eldritch hellworld valice#severed#aperture science#long post#trust me it could have been a lot longer#I have a LOOOT of ideas for the Currently Unnamed Severance AU#seriously the premise is so fucked up#I think that's why I like it#it's certainly why I like Blades In The Dark XD#but yeah one of the pluses of the Severance AU would be the opportunity to do Valicer TWICE#once for the Innies once for the Outies#I suppose I should make a proper post on the subject at some point#but yeah I think if you can find the show you'd enjoy it#it's weird#and I just really want to see your BABS characters dealing with a BITD Smiler XD#including your take on Victor and Alice#Smiler is secretly a little upset that they were taken away from their family#but they know their parents and uncle would want them to make the best of things#and that is what they're going to do damn it#and if it scores them a relationship with the cute tall noodle and the snarky one then that's just a bonus

If you’re still doing this game, I am highly curious about ‘Make Ariana A Grizzled Lady Cop NOW.’
Also, more Batgene sounds wonderful. I adore how you write Team Awesome and esp Eugene.
Love your work <3
ahhhh absolutely!! once again dropping this one under a cut for dead dove omegaverse content, non-graphic discussion of nonconsensual drug use, kidnapping, and csa under the cut (think svu or criminal minds levels of "holy shit??")
okay SO the basic premise: like every grizzled female detective in a crime procedural, ariana has to have a dark tragic backstory. the backstory in question here is that her daughter was kidnapped as a baby and she and her mate broke up a few years later when fred was like we need to accept that she's gone and ari said fuck you no she's not and im gonna become a grizzled female detective about it.
cut to about 15 years later: ariana and her partner get called to the hospital, because someone just dropped off an omega who appears to have overdosed on heat inducers. unpleasant anyways, and made worse by the fact that the omega in question is a literal child who's young enough that he shouldn't have even presented yet, and who DEFINITELY shouldn't be taking inducers
he tells them his name is varian and he's twelve and he needs to go home because his alpha will be mad that varian left without permission, and when they ask if he knows how he got to the hospital, he says he doesn't remember coming here but maybe his big brother eugene brought him?
anyways turns out they just uncovered a trafficking ring, eugene's an older omega who's been owned by the same dude since he was a kid and powered through an alpha command to sneak varian off to the hospital after their alpha gave him too many inducers (again) which made him so sick (again) that he nearly beefed it (first time). ariana and adira follow what little varian's able to tell them to track down the guy running the ring and find eugene, and from there manage to take down a ton of other freaky bad dudes and start finding kids and solving disappearances going back decades, including ~maybe arianas daughter~
im not normal so their alpha is the baron who just calls eugene his nephew to try to throw the cops off his scent about why this unrelated young omega lives with him
and anyways after that it's all fluff and angst and recovery and trying to reunite kids with their families and then it's more angst teehee
#i wrote this#antiquepearlss#thank you for the ask!!!! idk if im ever gonna finish actually writing this fic but the au lives rent free in my head

Hey there!! I stumbled upon your scleral buckle post, nice to know im not alone
I'm scheduled to get one early May and am totally freaked out
I'm only 27 and this whole experience feels 30 years too soon loool (especially in the doctor waiting rooms)
how was your experience with for the procedure itself and life after?
Sorry for the late response, I was in a movie, lol.
27 is so young!! I was around that age and I definitely felt you on the "Holy shit, why me, why NOW" bit and it was extremely overwhelming. I remember coming home after finding out about the surgery and just... sobbing. I was numb when I found out and on the drive home btu just... devastated when I got home. It felt world ending at the time.
And I'll admit, during recovery, it still felt worldending. But I'm here to tell you, on the other side of it, it's not! It is a LOT of regular appointments to check in on your retina... for the rest of your life... and it is something that you need to consider when taking certain medications (scleral buckles can increase risk of glaucoma and so can specific meds)
But... my eye sight is only mildly worse than my "good" eye, it didn't drastically change. And I feel fine now. Some days, I worry about it but every time I go to the doctor it's fine.
The procedure itself isn't scary, just don't google what it looks like. You get some eye drops that sting and you wait around for a while. Get knocked the fuck out. Wake up and get rolled out of the hospital.
You'll likely be given eye drops to administer in the aftermath. I needed someone else to do that for me because I had double vision in the immediate wake of my surgery.
For my procedure, I had to lie on my side and was only allowed to get up for like 15 minutes at a time for... a week or two. I pretty much only got up for meals, showers, and to go tot he bathroom.
My recommendation for recovery is: get the comfiest pillows for your bed. And have a table next to your bed full of all of the stuff you are most likely to want... snacks, water, comfortable clothes to change into so you don't have to rustle around your drawers. I ended up going stir crazy and tried to break the arm off an old part of glasses so i could lie on my side and still see the tv so I could watch it. I think instead I just scrolled da lot on my phone, listened to a LOT of podcasts, and slept a lot.
Freakiest part was the eye patch and how gnarly my eye looked. And the double vision. But all that's fine now.
I really recommend asking your doctor as many questions as you have, don't hold anything back. Even with the fix, this is a lifelong battle, so start taking it seriously now.
But also... yay, they caught it in time! Yay, this can mostly be fixed. Report back to me if you can feel a bump where the main incision was cause my eye has a bump on it now. And idk if anyone else does.

Chasing Pasts in Shadows
part 5 | part 6 | part 7
“Come on, I can't wait to hear Dustin’s snark about incomplete procedures and half assed data,” Max said as strutted into Mike’s house like she lived there. Which might not be completely false because Will thought there might be something between Karen and Susan. Max swore up and down it was friendship due the entire ‘divorcing their shitty husbands’ thing, but that could also be her baulking at the notion of being siblings with Mike.
Will closed the door behind him. They made their way into Mike’s spacious garage, where Lucas and El were munching away at a bag of twizzlers, eyes glued to something on El’s old tablet, while Dustin tapped away furiously at his laptop, headphones on.
“Hey, dude, save some for me,” Max hurried over to Lucas and El, squeezing in between them. Will narrowed his eyes at her. She smirked as she took a piece of the candy from El.
Mike slammed Dustin’s laptop shut, ignoring his ‘hey, what the fuck’. “Guys,” Mike slumped into the dingy couch where Dustin’s laptop resided moments ago. “We need to talk.”
“Never in my life have I ever heard something good after that sentence,” El handed Will a twizzler. “What is it now, Mike?”
Mike stared at her. “Max, do you want to break the news, or should I?”
Max made a ‘go on’ motion with the rest of her twizzler.
“We have to go back tomorrow-”
“-I don't see how that’s a new thing-” Lucas said through his mouthful of candy.
“- all of us.”
“What, why?” Lucas replied.
“Because its being haunted by more than one entity, and it feels really fucking evil.” Mike shuddered a little as he said it. “This mansion has areas where the paranormal traces don’t feel like they’re from an average ghost who was finding it hard to leave the living world. It feels almost invasive, intentional.”
“It feels like crawling under my skin, unlike a regular haunting.” Max added. “It was thick in the air. God, I am nauseous just thinking about it."
"Have you ever felt anything like that before today?" El asked, taking Max's hand in hers.
"I don't think so, nothing has ever felt so intense." Max said, breathlessly. Will walked over to Mike, perching on the plush armrest. Mike reached up to entwine their fingers. Will was going to melt into the couch.
Mike's hand tightened, before he spoke, "I have."
Dustin opened his mouth for the first time that evening. "What?"
“Yeah, it was a few years ago. I was hanging out in the graveyard with Nancy, she was there to see Barb, and she asked me to give her a moment alone to talk with her. So, naturally, I went away to the furthest corner to give her some privacy, and there was this one headstone, that,” Mike cut off, but Will understood. He ran his thumb across Mike’s knuckles, trying to put all his encouragement into that small gesture. Mike looked up at Will, eyes unreadable. “Yeah, that was really fucking creepy and I just got the fuck out of there,”
There was a moment of silence.
And then everyone spoke up all at once.
“How long ago was this-”
“And you didn’t tell us?-"
“Do you remember the name-”
“Can you take me ther-”
“Holy shit, guys, let him breathe,” Will said. Mike took a deep breath.
“I don’t remember what the name was, but I can locate it again,” Mike shrugged. Will could see the tense shoulders he tried to mask. “But I really gotta say, I’m not looking forward to it at all.”
“You’ll have us this time, right by you,” Will murmured into Mike’s ear. He also didn’t miss the goosebumps that rose on Mike’s hand.
“Yeah, okay,” Mike replied, his fingers curling tighter.
“Okay guys, great talk but where's the rest of the stuff?” Dustin’s voice broke into the moment.
“Umm, what stuff?” Will asked, maybe a little pissy at the interruption.
“The cameras, the meters, the powerbanks?” Dustin gestured at the recorder in Will's hand. “The rest of the equipment? You know not to leave them in the car, the cold will fuck up their lifespan.”
“Oh well um,” Will floundered, “It’s not in the car, It’s at Reyes’”
Dustin stared at him. “What the fuck, Byers?”
“Yeah.”
“Did you seriously leave the expensive shit at a client’s house, with like, zero supervision?”
“It sounds bad when you put it like that-”
“Never mind that, it’s already done,” Lucas piped up, “Why though?”
Will could have kissed Lucas at that moment. “It’s a long story.”
“We’ve got time and the diner we were supposed to go to got shut down because someone shot the owner, so we’ve got no other plans either. Why don’t you start now?” El said, surprisingly blase about everything in that sentence. Will shook his head at his step-twin, launching into the detailed explanation about the events that transpired at Reyes’ house.

A Good Trans Medical Story
This morning I had surgery today for the phase 1/trial period/temporary version of the nerve stimulator bladder implant I'm supposed to be getting (and first of all, holy shit! A relatively minimally invasive and easily reversible trial period for implants!!!). I'm decades younger than the usual patient that needs this, but I had sepsis earlier this year and it fucked up a lot of things, including leaving me walking with a cane. It should be noted that I'm transmasc and I live in Mississippi. Even though the doctor I was seeing wasn't in a religious hospital when I saw him for appointments, he had surgical space at one of the religious hospitals - and his people had marked me as Male in my records. Even when I had to clarify with the receptionist at the Mississippi religious hospital that I was trans because it was potentially relevant to the surgery, she was kind and happy to help me, and even went out of her way to ask a supervisor how to enter the information properly so it wouldn't get messed up. It should be further noted that the surgery had nothing to do with transitioning in the slightest, I was just a person who happened to be trans seeking healthcare. Even the original sepsis had nothing inherently to do with my transness, really, just poverty and being brushed off as "med-seeking" until I was obviously and visibly dying. The surgical nurse was polite when asking whether I still had the equipment needed for pregnancy to determine whether I needed the routine pre-procedure pregnancy test. No one gawked or made a big deal about anything. There was only one person who misgendered me, but I don't remember how long they were actually in the room, and I don't know whether they even saw anything other than my long hair. So I don't know for sure whether it was malicious and will choose to believe it was accidental because the rest of the experience went well. Beyond that, when I was (as usual) a difficult stick for the IV - I probably have some scar tissue in places from the sheer number of times I've been hospitalized or needed ER trips - the nurse tried only a couple short times before reaching for the lidocaine and using what would be a normally painful spot in the wrist. he got a great, painless IV line in only one more try and I wish hospitals would just do that sort of thing with me from now on. 11/10.
The surgery itself was also significantly less painful than other surgeries I've had before, and they provided low-dose but still completely sufficient medication and recommendations for how much ibuprofen to take. My symptoms already seem to be getting better to the extent I hadn't realized quite how bad they were before and I'm very excited to get the full implant soon after the trial period is over. My quality of life is going to increase measurably.

Chapter Twenty-four: Things Left Unsaid.
Location: The Spire, Exact Center of Apricus.
Mask Man: "We're almost ready. You've managed to collect all the data I need. Combine that with the improvements I've made to Ciar's Aurora Project and we're near completion."
Chimera: "I take it everything here is..well as good as it's going to get?" Running her fingers along a large golden container in the middle of the room. It had ornate carvings covering every square inch. Tubes were connected to it which linked it to other various equipment in the room. Perhaps the strangest of all were the cables connecting it to the top of the spire itself.
Masked Man: "I've spent a lifetime preparing for this. All the scrolls and tomes that Julius allowed me access to in the underground cathedral. All the data I've had you acquire. The Aurora Project details that our friends were kind enough to steal for me. The work I put in over the years. The test run from that ridiculous Checkmate invasion. The procedure with Xanthos' daughter."
Chimera: "I get it, you're good to go. So why don't you just throw the switch and get started already?"
The man reaches up and removes his mask, putting it down on the table beside him.
Janus Windsor: "Because we're still lacking one particular thing. Lucky for us, I do believe nature is about to provide it." He glances outside as the storm clouds start to roll in.
Location: Hidden Sea.
Sunil: "Puck? Who was that?" Watching as Puck walks back from a conversation with a woman Sunil couldn't identify.
Puck: "She doesn't matter anymore."
Sunil: "I'm not gonna push you to talk about anything you don't want to but if you need to let anything out, you know I'm here."
Puck: "She told me what I wanted to know, she told me where my parents are. My actual parents."
Sunil: "Holy shit...well once we get out of here, we can go find em!"
Puck smiles at Sunil but shakes his head and just continues to walk.
Puck: "Where's everybody else?"
Sunil: "Exploring the islands, I guess. I've been trying to figure out how we're gonna get out of here since we sorta rode down a waterfall to get here and that waterfall is gone."
Cerise: "I've got it covered." Making her way out of the jungle.
Sunil: "GAH FUCK ME, don't just pop out of nowhere like that. Also, what the fuck do you mean you have it covered."
Cerise: "Just know that I can only do it once, so everybody is gonna have to be ready to go when we decide it's time. You two come find me when you're ready. I'll be on the beach."
Puck: "And I thought I was cryptic."
Sunil: "Oh right. I did promise you I'd tell you that story you've been asking to hear if we survived. A long way back when I was doing off the books work for..a certain organization I can't name..I was stationed with a small squad.." Sunil continues to talk as they look for Night, Hugo, and Sable."
Location: Upper Docks.
Lye and her mother had been walking for a while now. Lacie giving no clear indication of where they were going, at least until they came to a stop in front of a small shrine.
Lacie: "It's probably been a little while since you've been out here. I admit it is out of the way and kind of in a secluded area."
Lye: "Who's this for? I don't..really remember coming to this one."
Lacie: "Let me continue what I was telling you before." Taking a seat on a nearby bench and having Lye sit next to her. "Your father had no choice but to fight. He was exhausted from his trials with the Emperors and now he was being forced to fight someone we'd once been close to. The lives of several of our clan were on the line. Nothing made sense. Your father was being torn apart both physically, and emotionally. You know your father though, he wouldn't give in, he wouldn't give her what she wanted."
"It was evenly matched for a while, but the longer it went the more it started to favor her. Your father continued to stand up, he was going to fight until his last breath to save his clan. She had offered him one final time to rule beside her, to unite the clans. For a moment I believe h considered it but, in the end, he knew what kind of a person she truly was now, that she could never be trusted with our future."
"She was infuriated. Your father was knocked to the ground. Broken bones, bleeding, likely near the end but unwilling to give up. She channeled whatever powers she now possessed, creating a sphere of dark energy. The same type of energy she used on you. She meant to destroy your father as well as engulf the rest of us in flames."
"When she went to launch her attack, your father mustered everything he had left. Fully willing to sacrifice himself. He threw himself forward and struck the attack, causing it to detonate. The energy exploded; your father took the worst of it. The dark flames burning his body and rendering his arm useless. However, due to the fact she wasn't able to throw it, the explosion of her attack also struck her. The last I saw of her she clutched her face and was sent screaming into the sea, sinking down beneath the waves."
Lye: "So, Dad won?"
Lacie: "No. I believe she anticipated a possible defeat and had rigged a dead man's switch. Your father tried to crawl along the ground using his one good arm but there wasn't enough time. The area where she'd been keeping members of our clan captive...and had many of her own clan stationed as guards was incinerated in an instant."
"All your father could do was reach out before succumbing to his wounds."
Lye: "This shrine is.."
Lacie: "Our clan is honored elsewhere. This was made to honor the members of her clan that she sacrificed. Those that were caught in her twisted desire for power."
Lye: "You've never once said her name."
Lacie: "It's not wise to speak of the devil. You run the risk of having her appear."
Lye stood and stepped closer to the shrine. At the very bottom of a list was a name that seemed partially scratched off.
Lye: "She was your friend once, right? That's why you still added her, despite what she did."
Lacie: "We should get back, it's starting to rain again.."
Location: Apricus Sewers.
Why was she back here? After everything she witnessed during her previous expedition, why would she ever want to come back. The answer was simple, the woman she once loved. Was it still here? Was that thing she saw before still Leiko in some way? What happened to her? Bea needed to know.
Traversing the sewers was never an easy task but she'd been lucky enough to acquire a small map of the tunnels that ran underneath at least a small part of the city. She'd been making er way to what she thought were possible locations she could find those..people in. Were they still people?
There were voices again, chants echoing from somewhere nearby. Perhaps she'd finally found something, or perhaps it would end up just being another group of union workers. Who knew? She moved closer and the voices seemed to suddenly grow quiet.
She heard some sort of commotion happening. Making her way over to see a section of the wall torn apart. She recognized the pattern on the bricks from before, the same style entrance. This time though someone had forcefully entered.
Bea glanced inside and held her hand over her mouth to muffle any possible scream. Whoever those people were she saw before, they had been massacred. Bodies lying throughout the room with cybernetic implants ripped out of them. In the center of the room was a woman. She recognized her, one of the representatives from Crepusculum. The woman let another body drop before placing something on the ground.
At the far end of the room was..Leiko! Slumped against the altar, seemingly still alive but broken. Bea had no time to think as the woman turned around and made her way out of the chamber. Bea had managed to hide herself well enough, though she wore the woman looked directly at her hiding spot and smiled before moving on.
Bea rushed into the room and knelt down to check on Leiko. She'd try and help what was once her friend back to her feet. Slowly walking her back to the entrance to at least get her out of the chamber. She was startled as the device planted by the strange woman a moment ago beeped and started to tick down.
As they reached the entrance, the device went off. It created seismic activity which caused the chamber to crumble apart, bringing down several layers of rubble and burying everything. Leiko grabbed Bea and dove out of the entrance into the tunnel just as the chamber was destroyed.
Bea rubbed the back of her head as she sat up. She must have hit her head during the escape. Looking around there was no trace of Leiko. No trace of anyone. She was back at square one again. She'd stand and look around; all she could do now was make her way back to the surface. Nobody was going to believe any of this, she'd be on her own. She accepted that, it just meant she had to work harder to find her friend again.
Location: Völsung.
Skuld had secluded herself, living behind civilization to train for what assuredly would be the most important moment of her life so far. Her first true test. Perhaps her only test should things not go in her favor. It was strange, all of this happening at once. Her father falling ill just a challenger approached. Her family's claim to the throne was now in question and it fell to her to fight for it.
It hardly bothered her that one of the Emperors was watching her train. She seemed to have been having more conversations with one or two of them after being declared a winner during the Olympus tournament. Still, she wouldn't lose focus, she couldn't afford to.
Emperor Vili: "It's good to see my people still honor the old ways. A test of strength, speed, agility, tactics. Only through battle can right and wrong be decided."
Emperor Clarion appeared out of a portal next to Vili.
Clarion: "I love a good show as much as anyone else, and your people are quite good at it. Though I do wonder if this one is in the right."
Vili: "We will find out soon enough."
Clarion: "Maybe I should have phrased it differently. This one is fighting for her family's right to rule. Her father might be on death's door which means her sister would ascend to the throne. Is her sister really worthy of it? This one seems much more capable."
Vili: "Everyone has their path, hers is different from her sister."
Clarion: "Her sister will attempt to bring your precious nation into a more modern era. Your old ways will slowly be forgotten over time. Her sister is weak. This one is strong."
"But...as strong as she is, what happens if she falters. What happens if her opponent proves more worthy. Wouldn't that be an interesting twist."
Clarion smirked before exiting through another portal.
Skuld turned to look at Vili.
Skuld: "What did he say?"
Vili: "You couldn't see or hear him, but you still sensed his presence. Impressive. As for anything else, some things are best left unsaid. Continue training, don't lose focus."
Skuld turned her back to Vili, returning to her training. Her mind seemed a bit clouded though, something about this didn't seem right.
Location: Capitol Square.
Mayor Lowell: "I imagine you all know why I've called this meeting." Looking around at the city council, all of them except Tiberius Ciar who was said to be keeping to himself in Ciar Tower.
"I know some of you have already voiced your concerns about who I've picked as my deputy mayor, and hopefully the person who can take my place when I'm done. I know others have voiced their approval. I just want you all to know I've taken everything into consideration, but I do believe I'm making the right choice. I believe this is what will be best for the future of Apricus."
"I will be making a public announcement soon and introducing my choice to all of Apricus. I hope our citizens are willing to continue putting their trust in me, and in the decisions I make. I've lived my entire life wanting nothing more than to do whatever I can for this city, and her people."
"That being said, we need to move on to the other reason you're all here. I received a request for a meeting with Highfather Coeus of Crepusculum. I've decided to approve his request and ask that all of you at least try to get along with him when the meeting takes place. I have hope that perhaps we can further cement a mutually beneficial relationship between our nations."
"That's all for now. Thank you all for your time."
Location: Solis Heights.
Onyx was gathering his things as he prepared to meet up with the rest of...what did Violet call it? OLIV? He still wasn't sure about that name. Still, they did work together well. He exited his room only to find his sister waiting for him in the hallway.
Onyx: "Shouldn't you be at the university?"
Lilac: "Taking a break. Don't want to keep you but father has requested your presence in one of the training rooms."
Onyx: "And I care why?"
Lilac: "Hey I did my part, don't shoot the messenger. You can go see what dear old dad wants or you can leave and really piss him off. Both outcomes will probably be a little amusing to me."
"Just a note though, if you DO go and see what he wants...I'd be ready for a fight."
Onyx: "No other reason he would request a meeting in a training room of all places."
Onyx glanced down the hallway and decided to head to the training room. Perhaps it was finally time to have a few words with Tyrael.
Location: Apricus City.
The skies had darkened as the storm finally rolled in. A steady downpour of rain making people in the streets hurry for cover. Thunder booming as lightning strikes occasionally lit up the sky.
Unbeknownst to everyone, the Spire slowly came to life. Lights flickering on as power surged through the strange structure. The top of the building slide open as a lightning rod raised up.
Inside the Spire equipment began to activate. The container in the center of the main chamber sat awaiting a final offering of power. All there was to do now was wait for just the right moment..

CME 17x08, what have you for me...
- this Lawrence Durrell quote "the richest love is that which submits to the arbitration of time"...in Emily's voice no less. I assume it's about Rossi, but a girl can twirl her hair and think of other applications.
- this Rossi stuff with Jill. Hmph. And Prentiss talking about... falling in love with your best friend's wife, and timing... teehee
- the way Emily listens and responds, reminds me of their chat in season 7. Can't remember the episode atm but it's when Rossi is thinking his ex wife (#1) wants to rekindle and Emily tells him to take the leap. I love that little scene, so this reminder was nice.
- JJ & Luke in the field. looking foine
- I like the way the Stuart house kids think Voit's a little bitch
- I really like Rebecca. Tyler's sort of growing on me, like some kind of inoffensive fungus maybe. I'm not a fan of whatever they're doing to Luke with this alleged "triangle"
- so all the Gold Star doctors/psychologists are dying/killed...I see where we're going here. Jill you in danger girl.
- Paget's hair so pretty 😍
- Tara is gorgeous, always. But those pics of Aisha directing the last ep? I nearly passed away 🔥🔥🔥 holy shit 🔥🔥🔥
- wait WHAT. Did I fall asleep? (that's what I get for watching this in the middle of the night)
- WHAT???!!!
- going back to watch what I missed
- I gotta be so honest. I just am not that interested in Rossi's emotional turmoil, his inner world. I'm sorry old man. I just....I just want to see more of JJ, more of Luke, more of Tara, more of Emily. Voit in s16 and now Gold Star in s17 have both built to/been aimed at Rossi at the last chapter, and I just do not find that particularly compelling. I think this is a result of the 10-episode serial format. They have to make the overall arc "big" and they make it about "the BAU" and who is more representative of the BAU than Rossi. I like Joe Mantegna, but of the limited time we get the fact that it's Rossi, over and over, is a bummer to me. ftr this is also why I am pleased that Spencer is not in evolution - bc I don't think they could resist making it all about him, somehow.
- I did like the way they had him zoning out while JJ etc delivered the profile, and then she clapped real big.
- wait a minute here. We were led to believe that Gold Star had *national security* implications. Now it's come to light that Jill used the white paper to draft a proposal, and the proposed project was funded by a mysterious *private entity*. Is the supposed blowback that the FBI sponsored research that eventually led to the creation of these killers? So the FBI has an interest in not letting that information go public, in order to protect its reputation (lol)? And you'd think, if the FBI director "had it out for" the BAU, what better excuse to reorganize or dismantle than to let the "founders" of the BAU take the public fall. Idk it just feels weak to me, the way this is all supposed to hang together. I suppose if there really are other facilities besides Stuart House, that were more successful (ie their patients became agents of state violence rather than uncontrolled killers), the gov would want to keep that secret. It's a pretty dark view of the establishment, that CM doesn't generally express. But we are no longer just a CBS procedural...
- the scenes with Jill and Damien. Ran counter to my expectations. It happened so quickly, that she convinced him his training had been a lie, that he killed his foster dad for no good reason. And then he's dead??? I honestly would have liked something more with this guy. He already knew quite well that he had been made into a monster, and was apparently exacting his revenge for that. So why give Jill any time at all? Because Jill manipulate him by using his given "purpose" (to "save the children")? And Damien and Jade have a fairly deep bond, so why does he commit suicide by her hand, leaving her alone? I'm confused by how that all went down.
- seems like, at this rate, we're unlikely to get any further follow up on how JJ is doing with BAUgate. great
- also side note but did Emily officially step down/was demoted from Section Chief? She's UC but no longer SC I think.
- hoping and praying for Jill to interact with any other member of the team going forward. Especially JJ. Not Tyler
- this show is so disappointing! I feel comforted by that. And disappointed lol
- maybe on rewatch this will flow together better for me...
I'm sure my overall impression of this episode was damaged by the fact I fell asleep for half of it and woke up to the climactic tragic. Lol moment

Tw: major injury and medical procedures
Facebook is a hellscape I tend to avoid, but I do look at the memories of previous posts - (admittedly in part to edit out some of the terrible takes I had). Holy shit, I got hit with a cinder block this time. Everything in this period is so fuzzy and nebulous, but there are moments that hit with immense clarity.
This was thirteen years ago today, when I had a fantastically silly night out with some folks I worked with at the airport. I was 29 and while life wasn't easy, it wasn't bad.
Less than two weeks later, the Duke ICU would be as familiar to me as TSA.
I remember my mother texting me over the course of the afternoon, into the evening, trying to make things sound normal, but they weren't normal at all. My family didn't go to the doctor unless you were dying.
<Dad's leg is hurting so we're going to the urgent care.>
<They want an X-ray.>
<Now they're getting an ultrasound.>
<They want us to go to the ER, but I'm just going to drive instead of taking an ambulance.>
Then she called. When they got to the ER Dad was immediately admitted and taken to surgery. The urgent care had called ahead to warn them he was on the way so they could prep. By this point it was seven and I would be off work by 7:30, so Mom told me to finish my workday, then come.
I tried so hard to drive deliberately but carefully to get there, but on the way out of the airport one of the cops I see every day pulled me over to write a ticket for going 46 in a 35. Guy I saw every day inside the airport, knew his name, knew his kid's names, and he took 20 minutes while my dad was in emergency surgery to write me a ticket. I would have taken one for 70 in a 35 if he would have just done it faster.
I got there eventually, and my mom and I were both tense with red-rimmed eyes, but we're not cryers. We're doers. When things are hard we make plans and accomplish them, but there was nothing to do but wait.
My Aunt Kate is a nurse and flew in the next day to stay until dad got out of the ICU. I believe she was a huge help, especially since the medical interventions were most intense that week, but I honestly don't remember much. She made sure Mom and I slept and ate, because otherwise we would have sat there waiting for news, waiting for Dad to wake up, waiting for anything we could accomplish to feel like we weren't failing at everything.
Dad spent at least the next week in the ICU, having two surgeries a day interspersed with other treatments. If we had lived almost anywhere else in the country he would have died 2/16/11. If they had decided to go from the urgent care to UNC's ER instead of Duke, he would have likely lost his leg and maybe his life.
This became my life, with occasional outings to distract myself. Work, hospital, home, on repeat. Days off were entirely at the hospital so my mom could get some rest. We didn't leave him alone for more than 4 hours the entire time he stayed at Duke.
Here's his birthday. He'd been in the hospital two weeks at this point, was released from the ICU a few days prior, and had had around 20 debridement and reconstructive surgeries in that time, with more to come. He just turned 55.
He would spend the next month or so at Duke, and another three months in a rehab facility learning how to walk again. Mom had to teach the nurses there how to perform the dressing change on his leg, where he still had an open wound several inches deep and the size of both my hands (with another square foot or so covered in skin grafts). The nurses there were used to helping stroke patients and the elderly, not severe burn wound care (the closest correlation most medical professionals will see).
When they sent him home in July? August? he still had an open wound on his leg where Mom did a dressing change every day. And by this point? This was normal. I had moved back home shortly before he did, so I could be there to help out.
I don't know where I was going with this. I saw that first picture and this entire horrible, hard year snapped into my head and wouldn't let go until I spilled it out somewhere.

Milquetoast watches: Babylon 5 "the parliament of dreams"
1x06
So far the show is only meh. It's kinda slocky which surprised me because "the gathering" was a fascinating start. It has depth and intrigue that so far most of season 1 is lacking.
This show doesn't do comedy very well and it was better when the storyline was serious. Sci-fi can absolutely do comedy and get a great balance between that and drama. See DS9 and Stargate SG1.
I see flashes of really good stuff in tiny doses. Mostly personal character moments. Which I'm hoping that the show will build off of. This is a cult sci-fi classic so I'm gonna stick with it and watch it until the end. I'm sure that it will get better. TNG was terrible in season 1 after all.
Anywho...the one thing this show does really well is adults flirting. I just watched this scene with The Commander who isn't Bruce Boxlightener (I know that's not his name but I can't remember it) and his ex-something. And OMG sex through a tv screen! Holy shit!
The music I love the music. It's just soft space inspired synth but it works perfectly.
Reptile-Garius is such an interesting character. Garak inspiration for sure.
So far it's been six episodes and we've barely seen the telepath lady. She could be an interesting character and I want to see her get inside the head of some of the main characters. Plus that whole thing that we learned about Lt Cmder's mother. I want to see more of that, like how the telepath is going to effect her.
Reptile-Garius really throwing himself into the role here!
Oh, I thought that was her kid! Delen's kid.
So they weren't married but they hookup and then... Run away? They never had an actual romantic relationship. Just booty calls they know could be something more. Interesting...I didn't expect this kinda of a relationship.
Wow their chemistry is HOT! Imagine what they could really do with Benson and Stabler but they are such pussys. Babylon 5 doing sex really hot without actual sex scenes is such a unexpected thing. Like I would not have expected this. Sex on sci-fi, procedurals and episodic TV usually suck. If the show doesn't get better (I'm sure it will) then I'll just watch for these hot sexy scenes!
I got to say I really could care less about the A plot of the story. I really don't care that somebody wants to kill Reptile-Garius. The romance is far far more interesting. There's more emotion behind it than the murder plot. It's crazy but there it is.
Ope alien with glasses! I love it!
The female characters on this show are all far more interesting than the men.
I know Reptile assistant lady just beat the shit out of Reptile-Garius but I think she's playing the assassin. Her being the assassin is the obvious twist. Her playing the assassin not so much.
I was right.
And She definitely enjoyed it.
Festival. There was a festival!?
Too bad we're not going to get a nice romantic storyline between these two characters. As I know that The Cmder won't be on the show for much longer.
Brooo! That was a very sexy romance. 🙆🏻♀️ I want more!
Um... Why is he introducing them to a bunch of religious people? Like what's the point... There's diversity 🤷🏻♀️.
