summary: Set after Like Someone I Know. You and your former academic rival, Bucky, begin a secret romantic relationship. What happens when you two have another exam?

pairing: College!Bucky Barnes x Female Reader

warnings: None actually. Pure bickering and a bit of fluff + no mention of y/n.

Another day, another test. You feel stressed by the number of lessons you had to study for this one. There were so many things, even though you went through all of them, you feel like you remember nothing. Nothing at all.

You open your bag and reach for your notes while your back rests against the cold wall. Maybe you will feel confident enough if you go through them one more time. Refreshing your memory does not hurt, right?

You start to read and repeat the most important info in your mind, trying to remember where and how you wrote them so you can use them during the exam, but it’s hard to concentrate. Especially, when Bucky’s voice is booming through the hallway. His laugh is so loud, and it annoys you because he isn’t laughing like that because of you. He’s just messing around with Steve, Sam, and Natasha, as usual. You are pretty sure Natasha is the one that made him laugh this loudly, and jealousy takes over you. 

“For the love of god, just stop talking for a sec! Some of us are trying to study here.” 

No one bats an eye. They are so used to you two bickering before and after exams, but Bucky immediately turns to you. You see the mischievous spark in his eyes. He’s so amused by the comment.

“Do you mean yourself, princess? Because I don’t see anyone else besides you studying right now.”

You make a sour face when you hear him calling you princess. That’s new. He usually calls you doll.

“Does it matter?”

“Matters to me.”

“Fine. I’m trying to study. Shut your mouth, kay? Bye.”

You try to turn back to your notes, but no, Bucky is not done bickering with you. Of course, he isn’t.

“Don’t worry, you will get a good grade. You always do.” It could’ve been such a sweet encouragement if his tone had been different. It just feels like he’s patronizing you.

“So what? I should stop studying?” 

“Yeah. Give yourself a break, doll.” He stops for a second, then dramatically adds. “Live a little.”

“Studying first, living later.” That kinda sounds like a promise, but no one but Bucky gets that.

You think you can finally read again, but Sam doesn’t let go of the conversation for some reason. He always likes to interject.

“Are you worried Bucky will get the best grade?” 

“Oh, come on, Sam!” Steve sounds tired already.

“I would like to see him try.” After years of being rivals, your answer comes automatically. You forget there’s no need for this anymore.

“I got the best score last time, remember?” Luckily he doesn’t sound offended. Maybe he just missed your usual bickering.

“And I will make sure that doesn’t happen again.” You give him a fake smile. You really want to get the best score, even if that means beating your boyfriend.

“You always say that, but…” Suddenly he stops talking, and you wanna know how that sentence ends.

“But what?” 

“Doesn’t matter.”

“Come on!” You challenge him. He shouldn’t stop himself from voicing his thoughts just because you started to date a while ago. Your rivalry is still there. He should be free to say whatever he wants. “Say it.”

“Maybe later.” He resists.

"Come on, Barnes! Since when are you afraid to speak your mind?" Your taunting works like a charm.

“You always say that, but I never saw you upset because I beat you.”

You can’t help but smile. If someone is gonna get the better grade, it has to be Bucky. Any other option is simply not acceptable.

You feel the stares of Steve, Sam, and Natasha on you. They didn’t expect this turn of events. They have been holding their breaths to see your reaction. Are you gonna get mad? Snap back at him? Shove his flirtatious comment up his ass?

“If it's not me, then it has to be you, right?” You watch Bucky’s smile grow while others mumble with confusion.

“If not my girl, then who else?”

Oh, he really went there. He didn’t miss the opportunity to claim you, and even though you wanted to do that very differently, you can’t help but feel giddy about it.

You don’t say anything at first, slowly walking towards him. You stop right in front of him, staring into his pretty blue eyes. He doesn’t know what to expect, so you can see how puzzled he is. You stand on your tiptoes and gently place a kiss on his cheek. 

“Good luck, baby,” you whisper into his ear, then you just turn on your heels, like nothing happened. “See you after the exam.” You don’t look back, but you hear others talk.

“What the fuck just happened?” 

“Did she just-” 

“I told you they would eventually fuck, Rogers! Pay up!” 

“Language, Sam! We don’t even know…”

“Oh, they definitely did.” Natasha sounds rather amused.

“Fine!”

“Oh, come on! You betted on us?” Bucky’s charming voice is the last thing you hear before entering the classroom.

▸ ever since you had arrived at alchemax, you and johnathan just couldn't seem to get along. not a particularly useful thing, considering you both worked for the same research company where teamwork was vital though, you insisted you had no real spite for him, the second you had gotten the job, you just seemed to one-up him in every single way.

every. single. way.

▸ when given a deadline, you'd finish in half the time it took him. when completing research, you have the information compiled when he was just starting to organize his.

hell, you even succeeded in being more proficient socially. how had you made so many friends already?

▸ he had to admit you were terribly charming too– a trait he was particularly envious of– and from the few times he's seen you get coffee with one or two of the other scientists, he knew that everyone seemed to think the same

not like he was paying that much attention to you as he saw you laughing with another coworker through the cafe window. foam party? sounds boring anyways, whatever

▸ he wasn't mad because he was lonely, or saw himself as inferior to you. johnathan had friends and honestly didn't consider himself particularly bad at making them. johnathan knew he was intelligent and that with his work, he could accomplish something big.

no, this problem had nothing to do with him. it was you. besides you, all the things he worked hard for was just second nature.

how annoying.

▸ your sworn rivalry had been one-sided for the longest of time to any witnesses. grumbling under his breath while he passed you, making a great effort to speak curtly with you, and was certainly not beyond intentionally knocking his shoulder into yours when he passed the look you shot at him for doing this was enough to make him wither on the spot– unintentional joke. my bad.

but he knew you were just as competitive as he was. the way you acted just had to be intentional. some of your remarks towards him were too pointed to ignore– your smiles and your friendliness nothing more than keeping it as civil as possible in a workplace setting.

professionalism, masking a deeper intention: to outdo him.

▸ and once you had figured that your feigned innocence would no longer keep you afloat, that's when the true rivalry began. an ambition-fuelled climb to the top to be better than the other.

it manifested more childishly than you two cared to admit.

"you know, chewing on pens isn't great for your enamel." johnathan practically jumps out of his seat, your words effectively snapping him out of his completely focused state.

he grumbles, looking over at you while lowering the pen away from his mouth a habit that i have too... guys look away itz not projecting...

you only shrug your shoulders. "just saying, johnny."

"don't call me that." he retorts, trying not to roll his eyes. "are you here just to bother me with unsolicited comments about my habits and dental advice?"

you laugh and he feels his face heat up in annoyance. you and your stupid laugh. he's heard enough of it around the workplace while you chatted amongst the others. it was a sound he could live without.

"so hostile. we work together, y'know?" you grin. there's a glimmer of amusement in your eyes. you were getting on his nerves and you knew it.

"anyways, i just came to ask if you had a pen i could borrow. preferably not one with teeth marks." the last part is tacked on so briefly that johnathan didn't even have time to be offended about it before he replied.

he looks at you dead in the face. "sorry. i don't have an extra pen on me."

you glance at the completely untouched, unused, ballpoint pen on his desk and then back at him. he says nothing, staring at you silently, before you get the hint decide to go ask someone else.

▸ it gets pettier.

imagine johnathan eying up a coworker, getting all blushy and stumbling over his words around them.

and within a week, you've got their number– and he passes by the two of out in that STUPID FUCKING HIPSTER CAFE GODDAMMIT–

it's not that serious to him. he can move on from a workplace crush. he however, can't move on from the fact you swooped in before he even got a chance. you never care to bring up that on your little coffee date with that person ended up being a disaster– maybe it was for the better they stayed away from him

▸ of course, he was able to outdo you too. his biggest success?

"so," johnathan flinched away, about to walk out the glass doors of alchemax and head home for the day– only to find you with your back leaning against the frame, arms crossed. "heard you got put in charge over something pretty important."

he curses under his breath. "you can't just sneak up on people like that."

"i was literally standing here in plain sight the entire time."

"were you waiting for me or something?" he asks sarcastically. johnathan seems somewhat surprised when you don't respond, awkwardly averting your gaze from him for a moment hm. guess that's a "yes"...

"doesn't matter." you reply, shoving your hands in your pockets. "so... you're working on a portal thingy?"

"i'm one of the people overseeing it, yes." he huffs, trying to answer your questions quickly and just get the hell home. but as you figured, he had all the time in the world when it came to correcting you.

"and– the word portal is inaccurate."

you raise an eyebrow. "yeah?"

"it's a particle accelerator. you should know what that means. the goal of this project is to essentially create a passageway– a bridge, if you will– between two separate dimen–"

"so, a portal." you interrupt.

he glares at you and you swear his eye twitches.

"just wanted to know. congrats, ohnn." you say casually, before exiting out the door.

the next time he sees you, he discovers that head scientist, olivia octavius who just so happens to be fond enough of your work to hear you out when you asked her decided it would be a good idea to have you work on the project as well.

even though johnathan was still technically still ahead of you– he kicked himself for how quickly you were beginning to catch up. you flashed him a grin from your desk as you began to help out on the project– he forced one back through gritted teeth.

▸ after tirelessly working on the project together as a team still trying your very best to outdo one another he figures this feud of yours is getting nowhere.

you've both spent sleepless nights on this project you both equally cared for,, it was time to just give up and be normal coworkers. an odd conclusion for johnathan to reach as a notorious grudge holder. maybe the lack of rest was getting to him, too exhausted to even deal with you anymore. or maybe, he was satisfied where he was right now– on the verge of a huge breakthrough with him being one of the main contributors– he no longer needed the pleasure of being better than you.

"how did you even get this number?" you ask, recognizing his voice through the phone as he greeted you.

"well, funny thing actually. alchemax has all the employee information on files, so i just–"

the realization hits you. "snooped through mine to get my phone number?! you're insane!"

he's desperate to explain, just trying to get to his point without getting a headache from you. "no, no, no– wait, i didn't come to fight or anything–"

"then what do you want, johnathan? a little medal? a trophy or somethin? you're probably getting that anyways after this whole thing– so,, so– what? what is it?!" you snap.

this is the only blatant hostility you've ever shown him. both ends of the call fall silent.

"wow uh– that was a lot." he mumbles awkwardly.

"...'m sorry." the shame makes your ears burn up. it is getting childish. you can't deny it.

he blinks at his phone, before bringing it back up to his ear. "did you just apologize? have i got the right person?"

it's your turn to groan. "are you trying to get me to take it back?"

"no! no, no, no– sorry." he replies quickly, stuttering as he tries to get back on track. "i just wanted to talk...."

the words hang in the air for much longer than needed.

"just spit it out already." you inturrupt.

"we should truce." he blurts out. "you know... maybe we should calm down. start over."

johnathan pauses for a moment, waiting for a reaction from you. you give him absolutely nothing. he takes a deep breath before speaking up again.

"i just thought it'd be better this way. this is getting ridiculous. and i think we're both mature enough to move past it so–"

"no, thank you."

he falters momentarily, processing what you had just said. "i'm– i'm sorry, i think misheard you."

"no, you heard me," you repeat, your smile clear as day in your voice, "no. thank. you."

"i like what we've got going on. keeps me motivated." the sweetness in your tone makes him cringe.

"you can't be serious." he rubs the bridge of his nose, fighting off the urge to lose his mind.

"oh, but i am." you lean into your phone's mic, voice dropping to a whisper. "just give me time. i'll catch up with you eventually."

your stubborness was truly something else.

"nope. can't do this, not today, nope–"

you laugh to yourself, hearing him hang up. you secretly hoped he'd at least keep talking to you a little longer. probably just a result of being a tad sleep deprived too.

▸ the collider is almost finished. ever since the phone call, you and johnathan hadn't talked for days.

and now, there you were, at his desk.

"need a pen?" he asks, looking up at you, expecting you to bother him again.

you shake your head. "actually, i came to ask for something else. i've been thinking about what you said..."

the words catch in your throat. you stare at the ground, the humiliation of what you're about to say causing you to fidget with your hands. he's never seen you like this– timid and anxious in his presence rather than smug and confident. it's a sight that he thought would bring him joy– but he's far beyond that now. instead, he looks at you curiously, not unlike the way he observes specimens.

"go on..." he says, leaning in slightly.

you meet his gaze sheepishly. "yeah. maybe a truce doesn't sound so bad."

he smiles back, cautious but hopeful. "you mean it?"

"this isn't me surrendering." you're quick to say, though your defensiveness falls flat, only causing his smile to fade for a moment. "i'm growing bored of it. we can just move on." it's not what he had in mind– but he'll take it.

"okay. sounds... good?" he replies awkwardly, unsure of what to do.

"mhm. so, you still have my phone number, right?"

he freezes. "yes... but– um– i can just delete it from my contacts now if– if you want. that was weird of me to do. really sorry 'bout that. just wanted to talk."

"nah. keep it." you say with a slight shrug of your shoulders. he tilts his head slightly at your reaction.

"i'll text you when work's done so we can grab a coffee or somethin." there's that smile he's grown so familiar with. this time it has no undertones of aggression– something which he finds more unnerving somehow. he can't tell what you're up to.

"i– uh– what–" he stammers.

you await the rejection.

"i mean– sure... but... you want that?" he asks, his tone careful, like he expects this to just be a scheme of yours. never in a million years would he think that you'd want to actually resolve whatever conflict you had going on. much less, spend time with him outside of work.

" i mean, i just offered, didn't i?"

"right– ...so uh– after work then. okay. it's a date."

he mentally kicks himself for the last part. "i– not like– a date, date, but–"

you don't give him time to stumble over his words and make a fool of himself.

"great." you turn to leave, but glance over your shoulder before walking away. "see you later, johnny."

▸ you failed to acknowledge this earlier, and maybe he had too– but over the course of your mutual rivalry, you found that you admired him. his brain, his work, his sheer tenacity– and he admired you too.

perhaps you didn't have to be better than one another.

"here's to new beginnings." you mutter to yourself, shooting him a text while waiting at the cafe.

Assorted thoughts about Astarion's epilogue that I have only seen in video because patch 4 broke my save files and I have to replay the whole thing to get there.

From what I've seen everyone's good endings seem a little... overly good and free of consequence? But at the same time I haven't seen everything with my own eyes and everyone deserves to be happy, so whatever. If I want angst, there's fic.

Sooo... is it that unromanced Astarion disappeared after the scene at the docks and nobody could find him, or did you assholes just not try? I will be generous and assume the former.

Stop stabbing the table you little gremlin. ...although I'd probably enjoy doing that, if I could get away with it.

I still hate that outfit with the ruff.

Not surprised Larian is doubling down on the "no cure" angle. I don't really care if Astarion remains a vampire or if he goes the cure route, so long as he's happy - although I do think in his shoes I'd look for some way to day-walk anyway, on practical grounds alone.

Hiding a knife behind his back while asking an unromanced Durge if they're showing any signs of being under Bhaal's control... I adore a pragmatic bastard.

Delighted and validated by Astarion feeding by taking jobs as a bounty hunter or something like that. That was 100% what Vel was suggesting to him post game. Like "Hey, have you considered bounty hunting? if my memories of killing people for fun and profit, and the last month or two of everyone suddenly celebrating instead of getting mad when I murder has taught me anything; if you eat the people the majority want dead, you can have all the blood and money you can get your teeth into and nobody will have a problem with it."

And then there's Ascended Astarion... who I will put under a read more to save space and for those who'd like to avoid the uglier side of endings.

So I don't think Larian read the supplement Van RIchten's Guide to Vampires (it's from 1992, but as far as I know it's also still the most comprehensive write up of D&D vampire lore, and some of it still looks to apply here (or at least, it can).)

But the first thing I thought of, watching him constantly turn into a bat, is that it reminded me of the vampire psychological development stages. Stage one is where a vampire is drunk on their shiny new powers and just will not stop showing them off. (Stage two is the "find out" stage of the fuck around process, where the vampire discovers they're not as invincible as they believed and descends into full blown, paranoid monstrosity.)

Then "I will be watching." "I/We need to eavesdrop on everybody."... Oh, the paranoia. How's that thing where the curse of vampirism is twisting the trauma and fear going for you, my dude?

"I'll never forget the time we spent together, though. And I know you'll never forget about me. Until next time, darling." ...might be his expression or the datamined epilogues where he still wants his ex, but that feels like a threat to me? Might just be a jab after being dumped...

And, oh yeah, we're definitely looking at vampire bride/groom tier stuff here: Just sit on the decorative pedestal I built for you and look pretty until I'm in the mood to take you down and play with you. Stop complaining about how you're bored and want freedom!

The PC isn't weak by any measure, they could become a rival.. AA isn't my ending of choice, but I am morbidly fascinated with the concept of Tav and Astarion as toxic vampire divorcees: Two angry, powerful "lovers to enemies" vampire lords "sharing" territory; passing the centuries obsessing over each other; fighting each other; sometimes maybe hate-fucking, and generally making their bad relationship everyone's problem.

these are titles i've already mentioned in my erwin post, but i OBVIOUSLY have to talk about them again: for the eruri x reader enjoyers, the entire fictional universe created by shinzouing is something that can't be missed (this is a story of the sea, certain obscure things, beyond the sea). peak writing. 10000/10.

again, for the eruri x reader enjoyers, something else i've already mentioned: two lovers by feelingthorny. the pining, silent affection, and body worship her writing contains are simply unmatched!!

how can i write a fic recs post without mentioning something by @riewritten?? i can't!! her delicious fic heap of solace was my introduction to her incredible writing, and oh man, what a wonderful journey it has been

now, i don't do much reading here on tumblr (which is why this post is 99% focused on ao3 fics) but i do know that there are so many gems to be found on here! i'm sure you all know them already, but i'm just going to mention them anyway: @levmada, @anlian-aishang, @jayteacups and @happybird16 are incredible authors, and they'll definitely fill the levi-shaped hole in your heart

back to ao3, feelingthorny has also written another incredible fic, expiring soon. this modern au is over 200k words but it's sooo worth it, it's not slow burn at all but the pining, oh man, the pining! i cried when she released the last chapter, it was a wonderful read

this one is probably the levi fic i'm the most attached to. lessons in patience by almondblossoms1000 was the very first university au i read, and i wasn't expecting to love it so much! i loved it so much, in fact, that it ended up inspiring me to write my own fic (even though it's not a levi fic). it's your tipical slow burn, fake relationship, frenemies (?) to lovers type of thing, and it's sooo enjoyable

another excellent university au is the feeling's mutual by wellitcouldbeworse3! i understand that these au's aren't everyone's cup of tea, but MAN i love them. this one is a proper enemies/academic rivals to lovers slow burn, and yeah, it might be an overdone trope, but do i look like i care? i LOVED it and YOU might, too ;)

third and last university au i'm going to recommend is percolate by heichoe. this one is restricted to ao3 users only, but MAN. personally, requesting an ao3 account just for this one fic would be worth the wait. it's another scrumptious enemies to lovers slow burn with a side of coffee shop au... can't you tell i find these tropes absolutely endearing? READ IT

i remember binging on this one last september in one afternoon, as a treat to myself after passing a scary exam, and i simply couldn't put the phone down: something about us by katonyx is a mix of royal au (reader is a princess, levi is her bodyguard), slow burn (duh) and murder mystery with a well deserved happy ending

high strung by HopelessCaseOfDaydreaming was hot. that's all i'm going to say. h o t

for the category "insanely good fics that made me cry for some reason even though i really really enjoyed them": orange zest and homemade vanilla extract by nylondreams!! it's a modern au, and i feel like this is a pretty accurate depiction of levi's relationship with physical intimacy

i read this ONCE all the way back in september but i still remember this one made me feel so many things. [watch me fall apart, watch me fall apart] by djmarinizela is a slow burn college au. it involves a relationship between a student and her professor, but the rating is green. uh, i think i cried after finishing it (it's a one-shot)

Imagine Sire having a love/hate relationship with a low-ranking hero.

(Now I say "low-ranking", but it doesn't mean they're weak. They're just... really bad at their job. They can fight, but they're a little too brutal for the public eye. Breaking bones, etc..

So the hero committee says they are too violent to move up the ranks. Ironic, considering that they are the only hero that doesn't kill villains. The other heroes do much worse all the time-- they just keep it under wraps.)

Anyway, maybe the hero has some nullification power. Siren's voice doesn't work on them, so they end up duking it out in a good old fashioned fistfight.

Unless its the hero's lunch break. they only work when they have to.

eventually, when one gets a call about the other and an order to go deal with them, neither knows whether its going to be a snog-in-the-alleyway kind of day or a beat-each-other-to-a-pulp kind of day until they lock eyes.

fuck Enemies to lovers, this is enemies AND lovers.

(also. imagine the hero getting fired one day because they incapacitated someone in a rather brutal manner-- on live television. Does the Hero Committee care that it allows its other heroes to do far worse, just out of the public eye? No! Boom, they are fired)

okay i kind of went crazy down below but i love this concept SO much

enemies AND lovers is SOOO powerful. i feel like siren would have a complex about anyone who cant be affected by his power naturally bc on one hand, it pisses him off, but on the other hand, he LOVES it because it allows him to feel secure in knowing they will never think he’s manipulated them and he’ll never have the option to (id imagine growing up, he found it hard to make connections because people who knew his power and didn’t understand it would find it hard to trust him)

but oh thats when siren catches them. they’re not really paying attention to patrolling, still pissed off and reeling from the meeting with the hero committee, so it isnt hard for siren to come up behind them and get them pinned down. and he’s all cocky and talking shit, and reader is too tired to actually fight him or be angry, so siren is like. something is wrong here, i want a reaction. so he switches to flirting. and oh boy does that do the trick. and reader is so tired theyre just like. fuck the hero committee. fuck everything. im going to have fun. and they end up making out in the dark alleyway until siren gets called away by the syndicate.

and the song and dance continues, either fighting or making out (though siren does note that the fighting tends to happen more when the media is involved) hero learns more abt the syndicate and is like honestly i cant even hate them bc the hero committee IS bullshit and the committee is up their ass about needing to be better, constantly needing to be better and fight more and help more people, and they let out some stress with thanatos, but it’s more of a “beat each other up until we’re exhausted and can relax” type of fight until hero accidentally knocks him completely cold because his head hit a brick wall. and they look up and the camera definitely caught that. a text about being fired comes quickly, but honestly they dont even care, they’re more just worried that this person is okay, and so they grab his ear piece and tell nemesis what happened and nemesis is like “okay, im going to trust you only because you just got fired. here’s the cafe’s address, ill tell our healer and have someone meet you there” and so hero brings him to the cafe for tommy to heal, and siren is there because of course he’d be there, but it’s for two main reasons: making sure the hero keeps this place a secret, and extending the offer to potentially become a villain (which he notes that they’d need to have a chat about it over dinner specifically, and it definitely is not an excuse to go on a date)

(all of the above <3333 otp of all time. i cant even write anything about them because their story is already perfect.) or for timkon, are they best friends or are they in love or are they rivals or are they codependent. anyways you get what i mean. i want to have to grapple with the very idea of how characters feel about the other. i want them to not know either. (other all time ships i will out myself by saying: makoharu, zelink, dickkory, and many of my own lesbian otp creations)

worldbuilding/theories. i LOVE seeing explanations, even little ones, in fics. i just like seeing extrapolation from canon elements and saying 'hey wouldnt it be neat if X was because of Y' or 'i think that there should be a history of why X is like this' and just trying to make sense of something. part of why the sonic series is like catnip to me is because theres SO MUCH LORE but so little explanation. almost none of it was probably meant to be anything but thats why its soooo satisfying to try and piece together a story despite that. i was like this with zelda back in the day too. the timeline was my bread and butter and i wanted sooo badly for it to make sense so i loved seeing people try to make it work. also... as an occasional treat, 'wouldn't it be fucked up if-?' type stuff. but only if there's some canon grounding or worldbuilding to set it up. (i.e., in my fics, 'wouldnt it be fucked up if the reason eggman only took 6 months after capturing sonic to take over the world, was because sonic powered his weapons? he certainly has the energy for it')

existential horror but in a character development way. i go NUTS for time loops or reality shifting. i have such strong feelings about reboots and rewrites that acknowledge theyre rewriting something; theres just something about the existential horror of having the world shift and only you remember it and it's your responsibility to let it live on through you, or your responsibility to fix time itself. the archie genesis wave fucks me up every time, same with dc rebooting and having superboy be one of the lone survivors of the spacetime rewrite. ......but in more smallscale ways, time loops, characters who haunt the narrative, 'you came back wrong', that kind of thing. i dont believe in ghosts but i believe in hauntings, if that makes sense. i believe anything can be haunted if there's something that shouldn't have been lost, and someone who refuses to let it go -- and that can have a powerful impact on scifi stories where reality itself functions a bit like magic.

Victor is probably the second most unexplored one off character, even though we've known of his existence since Victoria's debute. ig ppl aren't that really interested in him or even forget he exists (which fair, I think it's good we are limited to one villian white blonde boy to hyperfixate on). And what we know is that he has a terrible inferior complex against Victoria, and probably like her he's also emotionally abused too. Though we know with his bent up frustration that he takes his jealousy and anger to a more villainous degree than Victoria sometimes. Plus there's the fact he was literally created (design and narrative wise) to be a bizzaro TJ like the other members of the family are to the Botsfords. He is the foil to TJ's entire dynamic with Becky (where TJ of course feels inferior to Becky in a lot of ways [cough, Homerun king ep] and he wants to take her down a peg, but he won't try to use or put ppl in danger for it). So I can see where the idea to put them together comes from, afterall the entire episode where we formally meet Victor has TJ gush over him in the beginning, and we know that whenever TJ fawns over a boy it doesn't go well lol. They have a *friends to enemies to lovers energy*, very Tobecky and Bectoria coded (if Victor was like secretly in love with TJ but conveyed it poorly). But I think I like their dynamic as one-sided rivals better, the idea of Victor hating but secretly liking TJ is really funny, and TJ just does not care for Victor, he's got homework to do, leave him alone.

So even though I can see it.... TJOHNSON still sweeps I'm sorry. LOOK, besides them being adorable, they have amazing potential that I only think about. Yeah sure it's not the popular idea of enemies to lovers (I mean it can be, I got some ideas).... but the slow burn friends to lovers and storytelling of denial with longing is strong in them, and I live for that sooo--

BIG spoilers for Fantomius: L’inizio e la fine by Marco Gervasio

Can I just... rant a little bit about how freaking HAPPY the last two episodes of this series made me?! Oh, whatever, I’ll do it anyway. It might just be my love for unlikely protagonist/antagonist team-ups but I LOVED the temporary (or not-so-temporary) alliance we ended up with.

First of all, I really liked Pinko going from “bumbling minor adversary/enemy who’s comically uptight and a bit arrogant but a good person at heart” to “stone-cold badass” in like two lines. It actually fits very well, all things considered.

“If injustice is law, it is our duty to oppose it!”)

On the other hand, I also liked him going back to planning to catch Fantomius and his team as soon as the Glomgold emergency was solved and the situation went back to normal. Pinko is not a cold man, but he puts his duty above all else. And his duty is not to any mayor or to any law, but to Duckburg and its citizens. He has to defend them from Wrong and make things Right for them. To him, stealing is Wrong, whether you’re stealing from the poor or from conceited or dishonest nobles. To make things Right, you have to catch the thieves. Likewise, exploiting those who are defenseless against you for your personal gain is Wrong, whether you’re a criminal or someone in a position of power. To make things Right, the one who’s doing the exploiting must be brought down and exposed, by any means necessary. These two thoughts can and do coexist, one doesn’t cancel the other out. Not even if the thief helps catch the shady powerful person in the act. I can appreciate a character with such strong convinctions and ideals.

Then... there’s Lady Senape. (A small side note: did any Fantomius stories with her ever get officialy translated? Because I’ve seen people on here refer to her with her original name and I can’t help but wonder... do you guys know it literally means Lady Mustard? Like, because she’s kind of a foil to Dolly Paprika? Paprika... Mustard...?)

Anyway, I really, really loved her in this one. Seeing her go from the usual petty but cunning and ruthless enemy to unlikely ally ro actual friend was extremely satisfying, even if most of her character development happened offscreen.

Now, this is probably an unpopular opinion, but... I’ve always liked her as a character. Because she’s a foil to Dolly but she’s not just some Clingy Jealous Ex or a shrew who can’t actually manage to do anything on her own, because she’s kind of a foil to John, too, because I have a fondness for friends/lovers to enemies situations, and because I was utterly charmed by her first appearance. The mystery, the tension, the whole Chinese theatre thing with the symbolic colours... it all made a big impression on me, y’know? So, that’s why I was pretty disappointed when it looked she was never going to get any real character development. In any direction, I mean. Had she turned out into something like a Big Bad to rival Glomgold, I would have been just happy that she got a little something more to do in the Fantomius stories.

And that was were I thought her character was headed to when I began reading L’inizio e la fine. I mean, she WAS getting the chance to seriously mess up everyone’s future, right? And well, she did, pretty much...

But the prologue of L’inizio e la fine came with a little article on Lady Senape herself. Probably just to recap her previous appearances for forgetful or occasional readers, sure. But between explaining why she wanted revenge on Fantomius after Fu Man Etchù, comparing and contrasting her to Dolly, and showing Gervasio’s studies on her character, the writer slipped in a bit of backstory that... I don’t really remember if it had ever come up before, honestly.

“Jen Yu comes from a family of Chinese farmers and she’s a descendant of Ching Shih, the nom de plume of the lady pirate who terrified the Chinese Seas at the beginning of the XIX century,” the article said. And being fascinated by lady pirates, Ching Shih herself, AND the idea of Jen Yu having a backstory offering all kinds of possibilities and parallels (did she go from downtrodden peasant to ruthless thief, unlike John who went from dissatisfied nobleman to gentleman thief? Did she discover her ancestry and immediately decide to emulate Ching Shih to take revenge on society for a difficult upbringing, kinda like early days Paperinik? Was a secret diary involved? Were her parents honest folks or was Ching Shih’s glory reduced into a family of petty thieves and crooks, and either way, did Jen Yu ever want to commit great and daring crimes to make her pirate ancestor proud? Did...) I couldn’t stop reading too deep into it. Though in the end, my main take from it was... “Wait, is she getting an actual backstory and an article all about her because she’s gonna be... important?? Sympathetic??? Someone the readers will be supposed to root for at some point????”

Nevertheless, I tried not to raise my own hopes too much. For all I objectively knew, Senape was just gonna be petty and vindictive and have her backstory never actually mentioned or referenced in-story and...

And then, Distopia and La fine e l’inizio happened. And the only thing that didn’t make me absolutely giddy about her was the lack of “Well, you know, one of my ancestors really was a pirate!” lines during the whole “boarding Glomgold’s ships” sequence.

Of course, I did spend the week between those two stories theorizing how Senape would turn out to be secretly working with Glomgold and spying on the group even as she pretended to have become their friend. Or betray everyone and ally herself with Glomgold as soon as things got too tough for her liking. Or help take down Glomgold but then immediately try to steal the golden mask again and turn back to the asshole I knew and loved (even as I longed to see something more done with her...). Needless to say, I didn’t (dare hope to) think the change would stick or even bring about any significant character development. And yet, what did I get?

Senape working together with Dolly and Copernico for a whole year without ever selling them out. The three of them being actually a good team. The three of them becoming actual friends. Senape and Dolly giving up on their “Lol your boyfriend used to be my lover don’t you feel sooo jealous when you think about it?” “Bitch you broke his heart and you’re an asshole and I want to punch you in the face” dynamic to... become an honest-to-goodness adorable duo? And Senape becoming a permanent (?) member of the team because Dolly asked her and Copernico vouched for her and she was all for it because she liked working with them?? Dolly defending Jen Yu from John’s objections and John giving in even if he rightfully doesn’t trust his ex completely???

Btw, I’m also just so happy about Dolly having what seems to be shaping up as a regular female friend that is also involved in her criminal life. She deserves that. <3

If it doesn’t all go back to normal in the next Fantomius series with a sudden backstabbing, that is. I’ll be very sad for Dolly if that happens. Hope they just keep being besties.

Winter Rivalry - Chapter 2

Happy new year everyone!!!!! I hope all your dreams and wishes for the new year come true! :D

Now please enjoy this winter-y novella with these two idiots

Summary: Just a winter novella about two school rivals -Olympia and Amelia- having to do a project together during their Christmas break.

Olympia's pov

I took off my ice skaters then whipped the sweat from my forehead. Something cold touched my cheek and I looked up to see my teacher smiling down at me with three water bottles in her hands.

I gratefully accepted one of them, then watched as she gave the rest of the bottles to my other two -and only- classmates in our little ice skating class.

"Great job today guys," she said, bouncing on the balls of her feet. "The show is going to be great!"

I gulped down my water, wiped my mouth with the back of my hand and gave her a toothy grin. "We were pretty great."

Evan, the oldest of the class, clapped my teacher on her shoulder. "Not to brag or anything, Charlie, but your students killed practice today. Especially me," he told her with a wink.

I stood and flung my backpack over my shoulder before I reached out to flick his nose. "You wish."

Charlie shook her head with a laugh. "Not to disappoint the both of you, but Aidan has you both beat today."

I turned to look at Aidan who was as red as a tomato. "Hear that chipmunk? That's one more point for you."

"Is it just me, or is Aidan getting all the points?" Evan asked as he adopted what seemed to be a pout.

"It's just you," said Charlie with a roll of her eyes. "And please fix your face. It is very weird."

The corners of his mouth turned up and he waggled his eyebrows.

I peered at his face then shook my head. "Yeah, not much better."

He lightly punched me on the shoulder. I stuck my tongue out at him then we all moved to help Charlie pack things up before making our way outside and waiting as Charlie locked.

Those two hours of ice skating were just the thing I needed to take my mind of the fact that I had to go home and face the scolding I was bound to get for skipping my last school class to go ice skating. I couldn't hold off going home forever though, not with practice finished. Then I was hit by an idea.

"Are you guys up for building a snowman?"

Charlie turned towards me with her eyebrows raised. "Don't you have to study for school?"

My nose crinkled as my mind went to Amelia and the biology project. Instinctively my hand went to my pocket where the note with her phone number was nestled, along with some gum.

"Olympia doesn't study the rest of the year. What makes you think that she will study now with the holidays approaching?" asked Evan with a laugh.

It was my turn to punch him on the shoulder. "I do study! Sometimes..."

"Well I would love to make a snowman," Aidan chipped in, in his usual timid voice. For a 16 year old Aidan sounded way too young. That, along with his very round face and big blue eyes made even me sometimes forget that he was just a year younger than me.

I clapped my hands together in triumph. "It's settled then!" Building a snowman was the perfect way to put off having to go home and deal with my family and with my project.

Building a snowman eventually escalated into a full-blown snowball fight. The sun had set by the time I reached my home, aching all over.

Gingerly, I opened the front door and peeked inside. The lights were closed, giving the house an air of emptyness. Then a voice came from the living room.

"Olympia is that you?" My mother. I sighed in relief.

"Yup."

Taking off my coat and gloves, I made my way towards the living room and found her sitting on the sofa watching TV.

I plopped myself down beside her and turned to ask her how her day had been when I noticed the silent figure sitting on the kitchen table. The relief I had felt before vanished in an instant.

I hastened to plaster a smile on my face. "Hi dad. Didn't notice you there."

His mouth was set in a hard line and I could see the crease forming on his forehead. "We need to talk."

Well this was going to suck.

No matter how many times I had heard the same scolding, it always managed to ruin my good mood. Today had been no different.

After the usual round of you are wasting your potential and why can't you just be like your older siblings I was finally in my room. Alone.

I pulled out the tiny note with Amelia's phone number. Laying across my bed, I reached for my phone.

Amelia's pov

I had been reading Algebra when my phone pinged. I did not recognise the number but unfortunately I didn't really have to guess who it was. There could only be one person reaching me today and there could only be one reason for that.

'Hi' The message read. Not two seconds after two more texts appeared on my screen.

'It's Olympia'

'From school'

Like there could be any other Olympias.

'Yeah I figured' I sent back.

The answer was almost immediate. 'Of course you did'

What was that supposed to mean?

I didn't have time to delve on that thought, however, since my mother chose that moment to enter my room - without knocking. As always. She eyed the phone held in my hands with a judgemental look. "I hope you are not wasting your time on that thing again."

"No mother. I was actually texting my classmate that I will be working on the project with."

She seemed pleased to hear that. "Are they a good student? I would hate it for them to drag you down since you are trying so hard."

I would hate for you to get a bad grade and embarrass me I translated in my head.

I went for a -what I hoped would be reassuring- smile. "Don't worry mother, she is rather good. Of course not as good as me," I hastened to add.

It wasn't really a lie. Olympia was an average student and would have been even better if she cared more about school and less about whatever it was she cared about.

My mother nodded. "Good good." She seemed in a relaxed mood, which was always a good sign.

"Mother would it be okay for us to use our library for our project? We shall be very careful."

Please say yes. Just the thought of having to get out of my house in the snow made me shiver from the cold.

She seemed to think about it then cracked a smile. "Of course my dear. Anything for you." And your good grades her smile seemed to be saying.

"Well, I am heading out" And as an afterthought she added "don't forget your manners when your partner does come."

"Of course, mother," I said, fighting back the scowl of hearing the word partner.

Once she had left I checked my phone. Seven new messages stared back at me.

'So about the project'

'I would tell you to come to my home but meeh sooo... any ideas?'

'No ideas?'

'Helloooo'

'Are you dead'

'You know if you don't have any suggestions you can just say so no need to be embarassed ;)'

'Yes hello I would like to speak to my partner but it seems that she was eaten by a monster can I get a refund?'

I couldn't help the scowl that took over my features.

I started typing as fast as I could. 'I am here, so you can stop.'

'Oh thank God you had me worried there partner'

'I am sure.' I hit send then started typing again. 'Have you ever heard of proper punctuation?'

'No sorry I don't know the lady'

I was ready to tell her that I was not surprised but decided against it. This was not the time for our usual bickering. The sooner this project was done the better. Then I would have more time to focus on the rest of my studies - the ones that actually mattered.

'Anyways, we could use my house. Nobody will be home.' My father would thankfully be out tonight and with my mom gone as well I had the whole house for myself.

'Well that doesn't sound threatening at all' her text message read.

I pursed my lips but decided to let it slide.

'Can you just answer if you can come or not?'

A few moments later my phone lit up with another text message.

'Uhm ok. When?' Would you look at that. She actually wrote something like a human being.

'How about today?'

'Can't wait to see me?'

'You wish.'

'Sure i can come today'

I started writing out perfect but stopped myself. I shouldn't seem so desperate to get this over with. Even if I was and she probably knew it.

'It's settled then?'

'Yeah yeah just tell me where you live and when you want me to come'

Well someone seemed to be in a bad mood.

'Silver street 57a. In an hour.'

'It's a date ;)'

I was starting to hate winking faces more and more.

josephine irving was born and raised in richmond, virginia, to two very loving parents, mark and cristina irving. mark is the breadwinner in the family; he owns an auto shop. cristina was a stay-at-home mom in the first few years of josie’s childhood, but when there seemed to be finance issues, cristina decided to go back to work as a medical receptionist. mind you, the irvings were always struggling when it came to money. but of course, as a child, josie had no idea until she got a little older.

josie’s first summer at a camp was when she was in second grade and it was hosted by her church. it had kind of a vacation bible study vibe to it and tbh josie wasn’t having it.. she saw the lindsay lohan version of the parent trap and begged her parents to let her go to one of those camps. unfortunately, mark and cristina didn’t have the funds for her to go to a nice camp like that.

on the bright side, they did some digging and discovered that there was a scholarship for low income families such as the irvings. they immediately signed up and received the scholarship almost instantly.

josie’s first year of camp evergreen in virginia was just before fourth grade began, and it was nice for the parents because virginia was only a state away from them.

most of middle and high school was pretty average at best-- she was, of course, apart of some extracurriculars such as the environmental club and took care of the school’s garden, but her favorite parts of the year were always when she was at camp.

once josie graduated from high school, she decided to take a gap year and instead work full time at camp evergreen as a program director. for the next four years, she was in charge of all the outdoor events that occurred at the camp. she quite enjoyed it, especially because she practically grew up with all of the people she worked with.

besides that, josie’s gap year turned into gap FIVE years. she still doesn’t know what she wants to study in college-- her backup plan if her parents force her to go is to get a business degree so she can open up her own camp one day. but for now, she is currently a program director at camp evergreen.

as far as her personality goes, she is down to do whatever. she’s a bit of a daredevil and loves to go adventuring, seeks thrill constantly, especially loves horror flicks. she’s on the stubborn side though, and if she has a strong opinion on something, good luck getting her to change her mind. josie is pretty tomboy-ish. catch her in an oversized “life is good” t-shirt with a backpack on at almost all times, and of course her chacos fit her perfectly. she’s pretty independent, but has a few close people that she can trust in her life.
