The Rabbit, The Lion, and Sickness

This is part of an unfinished fanfic from the POV of Crewel. I'll post the part that pairs with this, it's titled "A Strange Rabbit and The Lazy Lion." This is quite short and may never be finished.

Notes: - Crewel's POV - Rabbit shifter OC (Male)

The idea of being trapped in a room with a stranger isn’t pleasant. Though admittedly, the current situation could be worse for me. The stranger in question appears to be doing poorly. Their skin is as white as a ghost and bags have made a home under their eyes. They’re fast asleep, though they may wake up soon.

I should first recount how we got to this point. This started a few weeks ago when a new rabbit showed up with Leona in my classroom when I was grading potions. He presented me with the rabbit and claimed that it was a beast man who stumbled into NRC. The rabbit explained that it had no idea how it got here, nor any intention to be a bother. Until they could find a way back or somewhere to stay they’d be happy to stay with someone.

“I know I’m suspicious, I wouldn’t trust a random rabbit that appeared out of thin air either. But I don’t know where to go, I never meant to come here. Please let me stay here at least.” They had come to the conclusion that staying at NRC would give them the best chance to go home. Naturally, I had my suspicions, though our principal is inept enough in many regards that it was more efficient to discuss how to handle this with the other staff.

I did not divulge that the rabbit was a beast man, simply one that could speak and happened to be from a different world. We decided to watch over the rabbit. In the case of something drastic happening we’d act to protect the students above all else. Leona was saddled with keeping an eye on the rabbit. While I expected him to be more displeased, he seemed rather indifferent.

The rabbit ended up attracting quite a bit of attention. Over the course of a few weeks, I gathered that they were fairly harmless. Or rather if they meant to harm anyone, they would not have acted so anxiously. They warmed up to a few people, but it was evident that they acted more out of anxiety than anything else.

Professor Trein was the second to realize they were a beast man. Being proficient in many animal languages, it’s no surprise that he pieced together what they were. Though why a rabbit would stay within a pack of carnivores confused him as much as it did me. It was certainly surprising, though a welcome sight considering the nature of many of our students. They carry themselves with pride, but that pride isolates them from others.

Anyone attending NRC is powerful. They’re right to believe themselves better than their peers to some extent. However, that does not excuse their unwillingness to compromise and often puts a damper on what otherwise could become great connections. The first time I saw them in their humanoid state was during an alchemy accident a week ago. One of the students mixed up their ingredients and upon adding them to the cauldron created a mist that filled the room. Most of the students got out of the room quickly, however, Leona was napping.

The rabbit shifted into a humanoid form and covered his face while trying to wake Leona up. I opened the windows and covered my own face before heading over and helping them out of the room. Most of the students took the chance to go back to their dorms early given the time as the last class of the day. Those that stayed were surprised to see a rabbit beast man leaving the classroom with Leona and me.

At first, everyone believed the rabbit had been turned into a man because of the potion. Before I was able to ask his name, he fainted. I instructed Leona to bring them to the nurse’s to lay down for now until I could brew the antidote. Most of the students didn’t breathe in enough of the mist to be negatively impacted. However, the rabbit had breathed in a lot trying to wake Leona up and preventing him from inhaling too much.

“How useless … you should have just left like everyone else,” Leona grumbled, carrying the rabbit to the nurse’s office. Unlike usual, he didn’t shift this task onto someone else. It was a surprise to say the least, though perhaps a sign that he wouldn’t always feel void of purpose.
