Opening this final episode with the Gaang all working together to take out the fire nation ship felt so natural, I completely forgot that's not what happened in the animated version! In the animated show, it's just Aang who takes out the whole ship with Katara and Sokka hanging back behind the walls. (Which is odd because of all the ppl screaming that animated Aang would NEVER have Katara sit out on a fight when…that's exactly what he did. Katara and Sokka weren't doing their own thing while Aang was attacking the ship, they were literally just standing on the wall with Pakku and Chief Arnook - so….yeah, about all that live-action Aang hate for not wanting to lose Katara in the battle…..hmmm maybe…uh…watch the OG show with your brain turned on….)

Why was there no outcry about Aang 'not letting his friends fight' in the animated version when that's exactly what he did when he went out alone on Appa and Katara and Sokka did nothing? Almost like there's a massive double standard here.

Aang takes point in the battle, wooshing soldiers overboard and doing some nice AOE damage then Katara comes in with the pointed attacks to take out individual enemies. Aang and Katara working in tandem, their move sets complementing each other, was really beautiful. Then Sokka coming in with the 'Appa-eyed' view of the situation and calling out battle plans and heading to the command center to take out the leadership (of the ship) really showed how each person had their own strengths and balanced each other out. I think it was a really cool choice to not have Sokka fighting the actual soldiers, but rather taking out the mechanics of the ship: person on person combat isn't the only way to win a battle - making the smart move and taking out resources IS!

Zuko's tenacity and flat refusal to stop trying is on full display here - I love the desperation and Iroh not wanting him to go, but supporting him anyways. Iroh giving the advice about the fissures is so sweet and I really like the change to it being Zuko who mentions the father-son dynamic between them. Not directly, of course, but by telling Iroh Lu Ten would have been proud to have him as a father, to me, makes the bond clearer and stronger than Iroh telling Zuko he views him like a son.

While I'm not sure it was the animated show's intention, not showing how Zuko has helped Iroh, too, did make his declaration that 'Ever since I lost my son, I've come to think of you as my own' feel a little like he just attached himself to Zuko because he was a young boy who he could replace his son with and shape the way he thinks he should be - I know that's a pretty uncharitable interpretation of that scene in the OG, but because it's not very well fleshed out what their relationship was like before Zuko's banishment, it could easily come off that way. I think the way the live-action really delved into specifically the funeral scene showed how it was a two-way relationship from the start.

I've seen the argument that the live-action was actually enforcing sexism by having Katara and the women of the tribe push Pakku to change his mind about allowing women in combat, claiming that it was the '2000s feminism movement' of the women still 'asking' the man for permission to fight. To me, this isn't a legit criticism of the scene. Barring the fact that in the OG, Pakku still gave Katara permission to fight before the battle started (and in the live-action she went out on Appa to attack the ships without his permission anyways), they're at war. This isn't a 'I'm taking charge of my own destiny alone' thing - if they want to be effective, they need to all be a united front, not split between men and women. In this instance, they NEED to be working in tandem with the male warriors or else they'll fail - you know, the whole house divided will fall thing. So no, it's not 'women still not getting power until the man approves' like some say, it's logistical military strategy to make sure all leadership and combatants are on the same page.

I see this scene, Katara getting all the women to come out and demand to be a part of the battle too, as a precursor for her arc in the Imprisoned storyline (which I'll go into why I think that will be a character moment Katara will get in season 2 in my 'cut storylines post'). Katara doesn't just stand up for herself and takes the role of combatant alone, she inspires others to stand up, too.

It's also another example of the idea that so many people are desperate for a change in the way things are going, but they need a catalyst to give their movement momentum. Team Avatar is that catalyst and we saw it with the Fire Nation rebellion group, Tayo getting his father to start fighting back, and now the women of the Northern Water Tribe. Katara (and the Gaang at large) aren't coming into a culture and demanding they change their backward ways and the natives are all hearing and thinking about this 'gender equality' for the first time ever. It's clear the women standing up to Pakku have been talking about this for awhile (not to mention Yagoda's talk with Katara last episode where she doesn’t seem fully on board with the gender divide either, but she doesn’t see the opportunity to change the system quite yet) and big catalysts have a way of springing social change forward dramatically. Katara was the just first crack in the dam and Yagoda steps forward to back her.

I have a whole-ass thing about how narratives that try to talk about the white savior trope being bad usually end up in the same racist camp as the ones trying to make the white savior trope good and it comes down to the depiction of the indigenous population. In most, even if they're saying white savior bad, they give the indigenous population no agency - they just roll over to whatever the outsider is coming in to change about them or lead them toward. If the culture has a practice we would consider bad (like sexism), the outsider (animated Katara) is the only one standing up against it and no one else in the culture backs their bid for change, they just sit silently, let the outsider fight their battle for them, then 'reap the rewards' of (or 'blindly follow to their doom' in anti-white savior stories) the new societal change that they took no part in.

In the live action, they show that it's not JUST Katara wanting this change - the women of the tribe want it too and will stand up with and for Katara as they join forces to make societal change. They are ALL claiming their agency rather that letting Katara do all the work.

I know some people think it's 'virtue signaling' or whatever and complain about the shot of all the women heroes in Endgame or Captain Marvel's 'standing up after being knocked down' montage, but call me a stupid woman, those scenes actually mean a lot to me. Why is animated Katara railing against Sokka because she has to do the laundry seen as the height of feminism and yet a group of indigenous women standing up and backing one of their sisters in her bid to make systemic change actually the opposite of feminism? It makes no sense to me.

I like that the live-action shows the women and learners joining the battle too, but recognizing their lack of experience in battle. It's a realistic take on letting those with no combat experience join up. They aren't taking point in battle, they're going to certain parts of the field and doing what they can - shoring up the walls and aiding the fighters. That 'aid' is broad and quickly turns into intercepting fireballs and creating ice barriers to stop the soldiers from advancing. Like with Sokka's story: you don’t need to be a master at combat in order to help in a battle - you just need the chance to join others defending your home using every skill you have.

The whole 'Katara can't be a master! It's bad fem power rep to have her become a master all on her own without a teacher!' outcries are really feeling like a repeat of people pissed that at the end of Daredevil s3 they added Karen to the business sign 'Nelson, Murdock, & Page' crying "But she's not a lawyer!! You can't do that!!!! That's so stupid!!! She doesn't deserve it!!!" Shut up. Seriously, shut the fuck up. This obsession with 'traditional' schooling being the only legitimate way to learn and if you haven't had a learning process that's highly prejudiced/not available to everyone, then you're actually shit and none of your accomplishments are 'real' is just straight poison. When they add Karen's name to the sign in DD, they aren't saying 'you're a practicing lawyer now', they're saying 'your contributions are why we're here, why we succeed in so many ways - we want to honor that even if you don't have BAR certification'. Same with Katara being called 'master'. It's not saying that she's reached Pakku's level (after all, he's THE BEST, not every master is going to be at his level) but they are acknowledging that she has skills and experience none of them have - she's been in the world, she's learned on her own, and she's held her own and has things she can teach to others.

There's actually a whole thing about how the term 'master bender' is thrown around willy nilly in the animated series - like, every character is considered a master (including the earth bending teacher in season 2 that's super annoying and is beaten easily every time he's in a fight) and there's not any actual explanation as to what that means. So people coming in now pretending that they actually know the threshold one must meet to become a waterbending master is really just them wanting to complain that a female character advanced her skills without traditional training. (She DID have a scroll, remember? She DID observe other benders and try to incorporate that into her moves, remember?). Airbenders are the ONLY group that have a clear definition for what makes a 'master' and Aang got it at 12, Jinora got it at 11. The term 'master' seems to be used more for ceremony/respect or a quality that they have something they can teach others rather than an actual course and test one must go through to attain the title. If we're going by that standard, then Katara is definitely a master all on her own.

It's not a 'girl boss getting a title you didn't earn just because you’re a girl and writers think that makes you cooler', it's a 'Katara has worked her ass off all season to teach herself, come up with clever ways of finding instruction, and even when denied formal training, took it upon herself to keep going  and inspire others'. When she tells Jet "this wasn't you, it was me" and to Zuko, "Yeah, I found a master - me", it IS empowering and EARNED. It isn't cheesy 'I don’t need anyone's help' pop feminism, it's honest and a declaration that even if you are barred from traditional methods of learning, when you seek to educate yourself, it's still worth something. Just because you don't have a diploma, doesn't mean what you know isn't 'real'.

I have been screaming about how Jon got the literal SAME treatment as Chris for AGES but people can't seem to get over the fact DC decided for the UMPTEENTH time that you know what couples need? Biological kids over adopted ones we have always been screwing over anyway! Chris isn't the first adopted kid to get fucked over by DC! Stop concentrating your anger on the fictional characters and start getting angry at the writers and editors! I want THEIR asses on a platter, not Jon's!

Oh, let's not forget the fact Chris was always going back to the Phantom Zone at the end of his debut run— but because Last Son's artist had to take a nearly year-long break due to health issues, the other writers took that as an opportunity to develop Chris and his relations with the Superfamily.

Superkids are disposable for Clark angst, whether one accepts it or not. Chris isn't the first to get the shaft (that would be Cir-El, who was even retconned as not being RELATED to Clois because people hated her guts as a Supergirl-replacement so much) and as you can see, he certainly isn't and won't be the last (see: Jon). I'm sure those twins won't last long either.

(I have beef with Kennedy so I tend to ignore the twins' existence unless someone forces me to acknowledge them. He is on my shit list though— at least Jon wasn't created as a (blatant) replacement for Chris, unlike those two! I can't believe he even admitted that! In an interview!

You could have found a way to deage Jon and solidify yourself as a legend regardless of how the rest of your run goes, but noooo, you had to cram in your own OCs instead! You don't even get to own their IP, idiot!

Oh, and I read somewhere (or was it in the same interview?) that the girl was gonna die at the end of the Warworld saga too! As if the boy twin wasn't enough of an obvious replacement (who I might add even has some similarities with Chris too)! And you had to screw over the New Gods for them too! They are barely recovering from King's Mister Miracle, dude!)

Amazing that I found your account! I've been wondering about this thing.

For the past four years I've been working on and off on this book

In the book everyone has some sort of thing that kind of hampers them in the human world, but helps them in their world- kind of like how in Percy Jackson, a lot of demigods have dyslexia and adhd

These hampering things are different for almost everyone and they're often related to a power or ability that you have. A person who has telekinesis may "hear voices" and person who can prophesize things may have an ungodly horrible sleep schedule

One character in particular just blacks out

The idea with her was basically that she has this "side" thar whenever it senses she's in danger, shows up and whoops ass.

This version of her is clearly not her doing the things and then immediately forgetting she'd done them. Her friends make comments about this version of her acting very different, when she isn't in control of her body, she makes comments as to what it feels like. She counts how long she's there for, then, as if nothings happened, she's whipped back into reality

Now with this character, in the beginning, I really didn't want her to be a system. I'm not sure how I convinced myself she wasn't, but now that I've began to understand my own system, understand what's happening, it's pretty obvious she's a system. The only problem is, no matter how much she really hates her mom, she isn't traumatized. Not by her mom or anything else, it's literally a point in the story that all of her childhood was her parents keeping her safe from bad things. There's not really any room for truama

Especially nothing serious enough and that would occur at a young enough age for her to develop did or osdd

Now don't get me wrong, I support systems formed outside of truama, but the last thing I want is for the first book that I've ever written that wasn't a picture book to be a catalyst of a bunch of discourse, I also feel there aren't many clear representatives of did or osdd in the media, and even less that are actually good or accurate

Personally, as someone who identifies with endo system (despite beginning to wonder if undiagnosed osdd is a possibility) I genuinely just think it's only fair that the disordered people are tended to first, then, once I feel they've been represented, I can then chose to represent the non disordered

So my question to you is what you think I should do?

Should I continue with this character not being a system and just this being the magic of that world that causes the weird split

Or should I go back into her backstory and find somewhere to fit the truama needed to make this character representative

(And I just realized this but she's the only character I have really that isn't that representative of anything else the rest of the main cast

Hmmm, think of representation like a kinda pie being made for a holiday meal. Just cuz you made a pumpkin pie (endogenic system rep), doesn't mean other ppl can't go out and get what they need for apple or banana cream pie. There's plenty of space for both kinds of stories to exist. The same way just cuz tv has few long running lesbian shows doesn't stop gay ones being made.

Endogenic systems' stories deserve to be told too, and it's okay to wanna tell it with what you have set up. It's not being insensitive to represent one marginalized group over another.

I honestly hate to bring a more negative topic into fandom discussion again but there’s been something that’s been a constant in the dsmp fandom for as long as I’ve been in it and I just feel like having a little rant. Don’t mind me if you’re not here for that.

If you’ve been in the fandom for any amount of time (or at least since I joined late 2020) fun fandom catchphrases such as “the fandom is dying” “the smp is going downhill” and “the fandoms got so much worse” have surely been a common occurrence. How very fun and quirky :|

This kinda talk has always aggravated me so much and I think I know how to verbalize why now. The dsmp was a very strange internet phenomenon for a short while. Hell, all three of my very non-nerdy siblings got very into it. At a point it was practically everyone’s thing. My question is where the fuck do ppl think it’s going past that? Certainly not up, and very unlikely everyone from that wave would love it forever. The fandom isn’t dying it’s losing weight. At no point would any experienced fandom nerd ever call what we have a dead or dying fandom.

And sure it’s upsetting when a fandom begins to split and form separate bubbles, but what do you expect of such an enormous group of people? If a person thinks the fandom is worse now honestly I’d just say they aren’t curating their experience thoroughly enough, I guess that’s harder on Twitter and Tiktok but don’t blame the whole fandom for that shit. And especially don’t host “I’m not in this fandom anymore but I’m still mad at it” discussions in our fandom tags. (Looking at a select few tiktok videos I’ve seen recently)

I guess my main point is that if you looked at fandom popularity as a graph people are so obsessed with the popularity being a perfect straight line forever or even getting more popular as it goes but that is just not how everything works. Especially an independent creative project based on individual peoples motivation. I’m gonna get a bit existential here but oh “The fandom has just been slowly dying as it goes on :’(” . . . Yeah and so are you. Slow decay of things over time is quite literally the most natural progression for anything. There’s erosion and decay until only the most resilient pieces are left. And I say that with all the love of two years of the most passion and inspiration I’ve ever experienced for a fandom in my heart. We live, we experience, we change, that’s just how our silly brains work. Oh god, this is getting way too deep for a rant about minecraft men but god damn it decay is not something to fear. Let the fandom go through its life cycle, why would you want to focus on the erosion when you could focus on how beautifully polished what is left is becoming? Its ok to have a bad experience with a fandom and be angry about it but projecting that back at the fandom in such a general and aggressive way especially from outside of it always does more harm then good. Please stop telling me my community and greatest comfort is dying, we’re right here.

i was at school, but there was a school shooting [i think]

but it wasnt like just 1 shooter it was a full on bombing with like a whole ass gang scattered around the school. like in those movies where theres security guards everywhere but its just criminals yk?

and so idk why but the teachers put us all in like these lines, like on a road those ppl who stand with the stop signs and shit.

so it went like that.

and so i dont rlly remember but i woke up and so i remember nothing with waking up but the first thing i remember is that we were in the afterlife. like there were these groups of ppl split into teams of 3 ig? and god decided to be a b and made us all...work out ig? idk we were doing these chores and shit

+ heaven looks like hell. its red, theres like red rocks everywhere with volcanos and it looks like an orange desert.

so i was in a group with this one woman and this old ass man, and my friend somehow ended up there too (she doesnt even go to my school lmao)

so we took a bunch of courses or whatever and we still went to school (im guessing everyone died cus all the staff, teachers, and students were there) so we got impatient and we went to god's work..he worked in a building..he was like a CEO or smth, like a cool ass spy.

(we were doing quests for god to get another chance in life or smth)

(it was me, my friend, the woman, and the old ass man who came to see god)

so we came to gods work and somehow got past the security then jumped god but ig satan was coming cus we suddenly had a shooting :D

and god did some cool flexable moves like loid with a pipe in his hand..and so we got out and he took us into this limo and we drove away.

while we were driving away we went through this portal and we bid our final goodbyes. so then we were suddenly back at my school!

it looked normal, like nothing ever happened.

it felt like the fucking twilight zone or something (my teacher gave me too much reading assignments on the twilight zone)

and i facetime my friend, and this bitch is already at a diff house, so i ask that since we got reincarnated back into our bodies, if that means that our fam and friends will remember us.

and that bitch was so fucking chill about it with a smile on her face just saying "no" :)

Final thoughts: okay it took me a sec to realize this was out of order (i know people have been saying it. im just stupid lol) but i really enjoyed it overall. gabriel keeps getting worse yet sadly never surprises me with the depths he stoops to. adrien needs so much help rn and i really hate lila but im almost glad she’s back?? like i missed this rivalry between her and marinette in a way.

So basically last year my friend group had a huuuge fight. it used to be 10 of us but the fight split us up and now there's 4 of us. Me, Sophie, Aster and Noah are the ppl in mu current junior friend group. Sophie and Noah started dating literally on the first day of school this year. Ever since they started dating, sophie has stopped talking to me. Like not completely but they literally have no clue whats going on in my life rn. We used to be suuuper close and now we're js so distant and its almost painful to talk to them bc its so dry and our convos have 0 substance. Aster has had a crush on this one girl for like months and sophie didnt find out until yesterday bc they literally ignore aster and i at lunch and play fucking ROBLOX. Today aster was taking the APUSH exam nd wasnt at lunch. My mom works in the area and i asked her if she wanted to have lunch w me. We sat down at this small dominican restaurant and had lunch tg. It was quiet but not awkward. some kids from my sch were there and i literally could have not cared less. I went back inside the building w ten mins left and sat w sopha (sophie and noah). They were ignoring me and not talking to me and i felt so bad. they were playing roblox the entire time and didnt even ask me how i was. i dont see myself talking to either of them after highschool. ive tried talking and it literally didnt work. i have a group of senior friends and theyre the only friends i hang out w (minus my band and library friends) i hang w outside of school. theyre the only people who have acc cared ab me even if they do make me feel broke af. they acc are wondering how im doing and ho my life has been. siiiiigh i wish i went to sch my w spacehey friends instead. literally my junior friends dont care ab me. if i was prettier i think more people would care about me and not brush me off as some weirdo whos always listening to music. i wish i was normal and pretty i hate this!!!

lots of spoilers under the cut. also i wrote way too much and i worked all night and haven’t slept so i didn’t bother to reread literally any of it, so it might be completely nonsensical, tho if you don’t expect that from me by this point idk whose blog you’ve been reading

hokay, first off, i’ll start by saying that i enjoyed it more than i expected to. i’ve been avoiding any sort of discussion about stuff, but my google algorithm is so fucked at this point that i still get recommended articles and stuff every now and then, so i was already pretty aware of what i was walking into, and was expecting it to be eh, but actually i prob enjoyed it more than i enjoyed the finale

episode starts off with a tense scouting mission

it takes .005 seconds into the episode for caryl to exchange a look of longing, establishing that they are still having weird conflict and are both too fucking stubborn to do anything about it even tho they hate it desperately

i imagine that will continue for a while

rosita, kelly, carol, maggie, what’s her face with the bad hair, and lydia (i think that’s everyone?) lower down to some army bunker or something, where a bunch of walkers are taking a snooze, and the girls are very respectful of walker naptime, and do their best not to wake them up

obviously they eventually wake up, but i’ll get to that in a sec

as they’re tiptoeing through the walker tulips, there’s this split second where carol spots a machine gun, and looks at maggie with a face like, “can i plzzzz, i am mad horny for that machine gun,” but maggie tells her no. (i 110% expected her to defy orders and accidentally wake up all the walkers, but she actually behaved herself for once. well. mostly)

never fear, tho, after the girl gang collects a bunch of MREs they go back to wait for the dudes waiting up top to pull them up, and bc men ruin everything, one of the ropes break, and daryl catches it before it falls, but then a slow motion drop of blood falls on a walker’s face, and just like that, walker naptime is over, and carol uses her bow and arrow for two seconds before she is like “fuck this” and whips out the machine gun

yes, she is super hot using it

yes, daryl watches her do it

anyway, all the other girls get rescued, and carol is about to be pulled up, but bc she is a #girlboss, she first makes a beeline for one more crate full of MREs. daryl covers her while she gets the loot, and when she gets back up top they have another charged moment as carol hands him back his knife

she tells her dramatic backstory about all her friends getting slaughtered by the reapers for no apparent reason, and then she’s like “anyway, let’s go back there!”

no one thinks it’s a great idea, but a group of people decide to go anyway, including daryl and gabriel. rosita is super pissed that gabriel is going, and carol doesn’t go, probably partly bc it’s a shitty fucking idea, and also bc they have to keep caryl apart bc otherwise they’ll fix their problems ahead of schedule and they won’t be able to drag out the needless angst

daryl looks kind of annoyed that carol doesn’t volunteer to go 

bitch, i thought you wanted her to stop putting herself in the line of fire! make up your damn mind!

moving on

cut to a thunderstorm, where, if you look closely, you’ll notice daryl is wearing the STUPIDEST hat i’ve ever seen. just get an umbrella, jfc

for some reason negan is with them, bc ig he knows his way around washington dc, and no one in six years has bothered to figure out how to get around the city and/or get a map, and he is like “hey guys, maybe we shouldn’t try to walk in this fucking hurricane,” and everyone is like “FUCK YOU NEGAN, YOU’RE NOT THE BOSS OF US!!!” 

this will be a common occurrence 

but eventually daryl is even like “actually, it’s rly unpleasant out here, and my hat is mad stupid, can we go inside plz?”

so they go inside an old metro station, which is actually a rly cool cinematic choice. i rly like the idea, and they executed it rly well

speaking of executions

there are some fucking RULL CREEPY walkers. idk why they bothered me so badly, but they were what they at first assumed were corpses wrapped up in tarps, but turns out none of them had been properly put down, so they go through killing these rotted bodies that had supposedly been there since The Fall, and it’s very gross and cool

this entire time, btw, negan is like “hey, i know i’m a shitty person, but i have some rational arguments about why we shouldn’t be doing this right now,” and everyone is like, “FUCK YOU NEGAN, YOU’RE NOT THE BOSS OF US!!!” and he’s just like “god fucking damnit”

(i forgot to mention that at one point, when they’re headed into the metro station, negan is trying to warn ppl of the potential danger, and everyone is ignoring him, and he tries to talk to daryl, and daryl is like “fuck you, you think we’re BUDDIES?” and negan is like “oh, ok, so you’re gonna be like that too? fanfreakingtastic” and it’s very funny)

anyway. a fat monster zombie escapes its tarp at one point, and tries to eat some npc, and negan saves him, again is like “hey, anyone else realize that this is a FUCKING BAD PLAN?”, and everyone is like “we don’t care, you’re still shitty and we’re not listening to you, and you don’t actually care about random npc i would literally not be able to pick out in a lineup bc his face is so generic, you’re not the boss of us!!!”

it’s at this point that negan finally is like, “why am i even here? bc i know how to get around washington dc? do none of you have a map?” and i was like, “right?! that’s what i said!” 

it’s then revealed that maggie only brought negan along to murder him under the guise of “oops, he got hurt in the line of duty, it wasn’t my fault,” and daryl has this look on his face that says, “i seriously need to stop hanging out with lethal women bent on revenge bc it’s gonna give me high blood pressure,” and maggie has a badass moment where she points a gun she has for some reason at negan and is like “i have like, one shred of human compassion left inside of me, and if you keep pushing me i will fucking kill you without a second thought, so shut the hell up”

(in her defense, negan had just dropped glenn’s name to purposely antagonize her, which was rude as hell)

(for the record, i’m completely on maggie’s side here, but negan still is right that trapping themselves in a metro station is a bad call)

anyway, moving away from that briefly

i think this jump cut happens sooner, i don’t actually remember, but whatever who cares, point is, we get to the part of the show that actually matters, and that’s anything involving my love, juanita “princess” sanchez

and also eugene, yumiko, and ezekiel

they are being asked increasingly invasive questions by commonwealth ppl, some of which i wish they actually would of answered (what do they use to wipe their asses with?? surely toilet paper has long since become extinct)

zeke, who is so much more tolerable as a character now that he’s not larping as a king, has this incredibly weird and sort of sexually charged moment with a dude in an orange stormtrooper costume, where he’s like, “i bet you were an asshole cop back before The Fall, you stupid fascist, #fuckthepolice, mb literally? idk, this moment has a lot of pent up aggression that could easily translate to hate sex, it might just be the intense eye contact, but w/e, let’s just move along,” and then he has a coughing fit to remind the audience that he’s currently dying of cancer, and orange stormtrooper is like “lolz, loser, drink some water you dumb piece of shit”

cut to the wholesome foursome sitting at a picnic table in a guarded courtyard eating gruel, and yumkio, who finally has a personality, and princess are like “hey, this place fucking sucks, can we leave?” and zeke is like, “yeah, i met this orange stormtrooper who i think might be dtf and/or murder, so we should probably bounce”

but eugene is like, “but i want some hot stephanie ass, and also some bullshit excuse about how mb commonewealth will save alexandria” which, they left before things went super downhill, right? idr. it was after hilltop fell, but they don’t know alexandria got fucked either, if i recall? w/e, not important

two seconds after he says this, they talk to some people who are like “we’ve been here for four months, or maybe it’s been nine, i don’t actually remember, i’ve stopped processing the passage of time,” and the wholesome foursome takes this as a bad sign, tho that’s just the life i’ve lived as a night worker during a pandemic, so i was like #mood

but then they watch some guy get dragged away screaming to get “reprocessed” and eugene is like “ok, nvm, let’s bounce”

(my theory on what “reprocessing” is, is that they’re stuck in a room and have to watch hours and hours of customer service training videos on vhs from the 90s)

i definitely got my jump cut scenes mixed up bc i think the negan accusing maggie of a murder plot thing happened in between this scene and then the next commonwealth scene, but w/e, i’ll just finish what happens in the commonwealth arch

the wholesome foursome are trying to hatch a plan to escape, except princess, my love, is distracted watching some stormtroopers flirt, and the other three are like “wtf, dude, how can you even tell any of them apart?” and princess then tells them every stormtroopers backstory bc she is brilliant and pays rly close attention to shit, and the other three are like, “this is useful information, thank you for being an insane person”

their plan involves yumiko and eugene dressing up as stormtroopers and leading princess and zeke out of the place, which works fine actually, except on their way out they come across the Depressing Wall of Probably Mostly Dead Missing Loved Ones

they’re about to leave, when princess is like, “wait, yumiko, you’re on here, that’s weird huh?”

sure enough, yumiko  is on the wall, with a note from ig her sister 

the scene ends with yumiko going, “guys...i can’t leave...i have tragic backstory to unveil”

back in murder metro town, npc and some other npc have stolen all the supplies, there’s a train blocking the track, and a horde of walkers are coming towards them, so things are not going fantastic

they horde is too big to take down, so they start to climb on top of the train car to get away

but dog runs away!

and daryl, being every pet owner ever, is like “gotta go get my dog, guys, try not to get killed while i’m gone, c u soon!” and he ducks under the train and disappears

the episode ends with maggie climbing up the train car but getting grabbed by a walker and dangling off the edge, and negan is there and they have a lion king moment where maggie is like, “scar! help me!” and negan is like “long live the king, bitch” and walks away into the shadows, leaving maggie to a potential death

which, while i know isn’t actually going to happen, would be a really fucking funny move on the writers’ part

like, “look, lauren’s back! and now she’s dead, bet you didn’t expect that!”

anyway

my assumption is negan will actually end up helping her up or something, continuing his ambiguous morality bullshit that actually isn’t ambiguous bc he BEAT GLENN TO DEATH WITH A FUCKING BAT WRAPPED IN BARBED WIRE IN FRONT OF HIS PREGNANT WIFE

the maggie/negan arch is kind of dumb, but whatevs, i’ll tolerate it, as long as my boy glenn gets justice in the end

final assessment: good episode. i’m much more interested in commonwealth than the reapers, tho i am hoping that daryl’s personality-less ex turns out to be a monster killing machine with no conscience, that’ll be fun. princess is a gift from god. hershel jr needs his own tv show. needs more carol (and caryl)

however i will talk about his positive relationships in a second post so people who don't want to see the entire salt mines i contain about this can still get the good content. because i am about to be an unrepentant hater.

so. from the information i've gathered, there are four 'main' raiden ships that people seem to split up between. (there are more minor ones but they all suck too and i don't want to talk about them because many of them venture into the downright horrifying.) those four ships are with the following individuals: rosemary, solid snake, vamp, and jetstream sam. now, when it comes to ships, i go in for the ones that are healthy and don't completely butcher the involved characters, so if anyone's reading this who doesn't give a shit about that then i guess this post won't mean anything to you. this still applies if it's a solely physical relationship--'friends with benefits' still involves them actually being, y'know, able to stand each other, and 'hate sex' as a concept is just... no thanks. plus even in those cases a lot of this kind of thing would still require completely ignoring the characters' actual personalities. not for me, thank you!

bonus points in this particular case because raiden already has so many awful, toxic relationships in his life and i simply do not see why anyone would feel the need to add more. anyway, time to actually get into my complaints. i'm not going to be super tactful about this. or tactful at all, really. you've been warned.

i have talked about the rose thing many times already so i'm just going to skip her because i'm not sure what else there is to say.

i've also touched on the problems with vamp. i like vamp just fine as his own character, but that doesn't mean i don't still disapprove of this idea. they're incompatible by virtue of one of them doesn't really give that much of a shit and just wants to die and the other one is perfectly fine making that happen. yes, yes, vamp is freud's best friend, but that doesn't mean shit on an emotional level and i doubt it really means much if anything on a physical level either. this one would either be vastly unhealthy or ridiculously inaccurate. moving on!

next up i want to talk about solid snake. i'll be honest here, i just do not like the guy, but that isn't the reason why i don't like this ship. again, this one would be incredibly unhealthy. raiden clearly looks up to snake, i'd go so far as to call it hero worship--he seems to think of snake almost as a mentor figure, which, considering the fact that the man who he grew up with and who 'taught him everything' was another of big boss's clones, isn't that much of a surprise. meanwhile, during mgs2, snake... does not treat him like an equal in the slightest. quite the opposite, in fact. even beyond consistently belittling him for his (perceived) lack of experience, rarely giving him any actual positive acknowledgement, insulting him behind his back, and generally just being an asshole... well, this is my hot take: snake doesn't treat raiden that much better than any of the other major players do. he isn't actively trying to kill raiden (but then again, neither are the patriots, for most of it), but other than that, let's run over the list: manipulating raiden, check, lying to him, check, betraying him and throwing him to the wolves when it suits his purposes, check! (also, he basically ignores raiden actively having a mental breakdown and just says a bunch of cryptic and unhelpful shit. how caring of him, i say sarcastically.)

and to say nothing of mgs4! holy shit, mgs4 is bad on the raiden-and-snake front. raiden literally throws himself into danger constantly and almost dies three separate times while trying to protect snake. he WOULD HAVE died at the end there if snake hadn't finally gotten him to stop with the suicide missions. 'my body is a machine, i can take it' you can't put metal in the microwave for a goddamn reason. aaaaand aside from having a couple decent moments, snake is... still an asshole. he tried to take raiden to shadow moses island when he was dying and by the time he finally changed his mind (because a CHILD had to convince him not to) he was telling raiden he had a family when he had already been very clearly told that no, no he doesn't. of course raiden has a breakdown. and snake ignores him. again. raiden pours his heart out and begs snake not to leave him alone and snake just says 'this is my fight' and leaves. that's it. like i said, he has a few moments, but by and large i think it's pretty obvious that raiden cares a lot more about snake than snake does about him.

the inherent emotional and power imbalance that would be and is present in any relationship (platonic (which is what we actually see), romantic, sexual, anything) between the two of them downright horrifies me. raiden would be putting almost all of the work into it for very little in return, and i just... i can't accept that. he deserves better than that.

aaaaaaand jetstream sam. christ. this one is so popular, and for what? for what? their first meeting is sam helping murder a man raiden truly respects and considers a friend. and then maiming him. including destroying one of the only organic parts he has left. all the while mocking him and then almost killing him, too.

and their second meeting doesn't go any better. sam immediately and cheerfully starts messing with raiden's mind, employing brutal psychological warfare to the point that raiden almost lets himself get killed because he's too damn nice for his own good and can barely bring himself to fight back against the people trying to kill him.

this is, of course, all while sam is working for desperado, a company that is kidnapping children off the streets and turning them into brainwashed cyborg soldiers, aka some of the most horrifying things raiden's been put through in his life at the same time. and then he has the nerve to try and take the moral high ground.

and then there's the third meeting! in which they once again try to kill each other. the fact that sam is calling raiden a pretty boy and saying to 'show [him] a good time' during this fight does not mean anything. he's not flirting with him, he's mocking him. his tendency to do that is literally one of his most blatant character traits. it's creepy. and even if he was flirting, that's not nearly enough to build anything off of.

the fact that he decides to help raiden at the end also doesn't mean anything. unless you want to look at his dlc and decide that since he decided to help armstrong that means you ship THEM.

that's actually another of the reasons it would never work. raiden is an idealist. he has very strong beliefs about right and wrong. and sam... doesn't. his little 'we've heard enough speeches about ideals' is just something he says to disguise the fact that he doesn't have any. he flip-flops over committing atrocities like he's trying to decide what to have for breakfast. meanwhile raiden would have sooner let armstrong kill him than help with his plans. they're completely incompatible. raiden might have had some respect for sam's fighting skills, but he'd never respect him as a person. because sam goes against everything he is.

i could say so much more on that, but this post is long enough as is, and i've already made you wait almost four hours... sorry about that... i have a lot of thoughts. a lot of them.

i watched this really interesting (and pretty fucking scary) video of a keynote address at some conference from like 2 years ago and i can’t remember the woman’s name but anyway...

basically her point was that people keep pushing the concept of “media literacy” as a solution to Fake News: you know, teaching people to think about bias, follow the money, and do their own research on a given topic.

the issue with this, she said, is that that kind of “media literacy” is not really a problem these days. a lot of people do their own research on these topics. the issue is that when they do their own research, it’s very easy to come across hateful rhetoric. a lot of people will see it and go “oh this belief is based on irrational hate” and move on but some people will see it and go “hey, i agree with this.” and now they know where to find numbers and facts (which aren’t necessarily true or accurate, more on that in a second) to support their hateful rhetoric, and they get radicalized. that is literally what happened with dylan roof. he was hearing about trayvon martin’s murder on the news, he researched it on his own to “get the facts” (which is exactly what “media literacy” tells you to do!), he found the wikipedia page, and he learned terms that, through more web searches, introduced him to extremist hate groups online.

obviously dylan roof is an extreme example of how the practice of “media literacy” can go wrong. and due to his life experiences, he was probably predisposed to that kind of rhetoric; we can’t place all the blame on “media literacy” for turning him into what he became. but the point is that he followed the rules of “media literacy” to a T, and still wound up believing fake news, buying into hateful rhetoric, and ultimately becoming a murderer.

clearly then, the issue isn’t entirely about media illiteracy. that’s part of it, sure, but it’s also about something else much more complicated, and it has to do with like...the how ppl view “truth” and “facts,” across and throughout the political spectrum. both sides have in facts and evidence, but they’re different facts and different pieces of evidence. both sides are extremely suspicious about where the other side’s facts come from, who paid for their studies, who might be benefiting from a certain fact if it was fake. (note: when i say “both sides” i mean like left wing vs. right wing in the US. i know there aren’t only two sides [nor should there be rly] but that’s the major split. and i know these issues exist in other countries but i don’t have adequate firsthand knowledge of what’s going on in other countries to comment usefully, lol)

there used to be a belief (at least in the US) that you could establish truth by doing an objective study and gathering empirical facts, which you would then use to support a conclusion. but now, for so many reasons, people are more aware of how easy it is to manipulate facts and data. and if it’s possible for people/companies to pay for an “objective” study so that they can be sure that it will support their desires (like oil executives paying scientists to do a study saying that oil isn’t bad for the environment), well, that kind of casts doubt on the whole system of facts and evidence. who’s to say it’s not all lies? how far down the rabbit hole do you go? if you read an article that cites a study, do you go find the study itself and read it? if the study is based on a certain premise, do you go read where that premise comes from? do you find out who paid for it? if someone paid for it, how much do you research them? how much do you research the author? where does it stop? the truth can be manipulated at literally any stage of meaning-making, and that’s become increasingly clear over the past several years.

so, if we’ve gone through years of capitalism running the game and manipulating facts and discrediting science for their own benefit (which we have), then it’s really not unreasonable for people to feel like any fact could potentially be fake or manipulated for someone else’s benefit. in that kind of world, all “facts” take on the same quality of “truth,” which is to say none. people believe in whatever facts they believe in based more on faith than in anything objective.

this leads us to a society in which many people look for facts that support their preexisting feelings and they accept certain facts as “true” based almost entirely on the faith that they are true.

so partly, people do need to learn to be more discerning when it comes to learning the “truth” and accepting “facts.” but the more insidious beast here is that most people have pre-formed opinions about these things and build their fact-finding around those opinions. and if the pre-formed opinion is based on hate or fear or anger, well it’s very easy to find support for that opinion with things that look a lot like facts.

Upon rereading tgcf, one of the biggest complaints I have is how lackluster all the extra chapters were. literally none of them were good and all contained rlly gross and harmful sentiments (like the amnesia one which.. yea.. or all the things implying xl should get pregnant for hc thus equating gay relationships with hetero ones and playing into the wife thing and just GOD I HATE MXTX) 

There were a lot of little plot points i wish that had been further elaborated on more in the extras as opposed to hualian being ... like that. I had enough. Like mdzs had actaully good extras (minus the incense burners) that were nice side stories that elaborated more on the characters. Like the hook one with the juniors was so cute and i loved seeing them grow more. Or the lotus pod extras omg.. im such a lotus pod extra stan. those were so cute and gave us a lot of good insight into just how lovestruck lwj was during the times when he didn’t see wwx. mxtx should've stuck to those sorta extras in tgcf but NOOO. SO I have a list of so many other more interesting things those chapters couldve been spent on like:

A resolution on He Xuan’s revenge and his character arc. Bc its implied He Xuan is still hanging out and watching over sqx and that taking revenge didn’t fully satisfy him bc ok.. yea shi wudu is dead but he xuans family will never come back. Now what does he have to live for?? i wish we couldve seen a look into his life during the entire ordeal. like a chapter from his perspective while he was posing as Ming Yi  and maybe a look at a conversation btw he xuan and the real ming yi or a chapter after SQX was banished to see what he’s doing now. Also what did he xuan owe hua cheng money for anyways?? Like ik not every little thing has to be explained but I Want to Know. PLEASE more goth boyfriend content now I just wanna see him :,((

a better resolution of yin yu and quan yizhens storyline. im still mad abt how that plot point was split btw books 3 and 5  when it was rlly out of place and  there were other more pressing plot matters and it just rlly deserved more time. a day in the life of the guoshi fangxin or general hua PLEASE especially like one where hua cheng was SO CLOSE to meeting xie lian but had no clue that xie lian was there at the time but the two did smth that inadvertantly helped the other and they still were connected even though they hadnt met omg pls that’d be so nice. like imagine Hua cheng catching a glimpse of the guoshi in public in yong’an while he’s trying to follow some lead that points to xie lian or maybe following a lead to capture qi rong bc he said he knew qi rong was a part of the yong’an stuff and originally thought the guoshi was one of qi rongs pawns. like can you IMAGINE him getting so close. but at the last second he did smth small that impacted xie lian. like they bumped into eachother on the street or smth. god i’d go crazy

OR vice versa.. like a day in the life of the young ghost king hua cheng. Like again, one of my biggest issues was that hua cheng just knew everything and its never really explained how he got all of that info. like yes he’s been alive very long and has eyes and ppl working for him everywhere but like... how did he build that network?? I’d love to see a chapter of young ghost king hua cheng travelling around trying to learn as much as he can abt the world and how it can help bring him to xie lian. and the two maybe are in the same kingdom for a bit and they don’t meet exactly but hua cheng stops some fight or something and helps xie lian indirectly or maybe xie lian is performing on the street in some costume and hua cheng doesn’t recognize him and smiles and gives him a coin or smth. idk i’m just dying for any sorta extra chapter or fic like that. i’m honestly so tempted to write my own but i cant write

also!! we’ve seen how xie lian picks up people down on their luck near him and show them kindness (like banyue, lang ying, xiao ying, he tried to with san lang but we know how that ended lmao) so i’d love to see another little vignette of him doing that on his travels and how every person he meets teaches him smth about life and being a good person and idk, i just think it’d be rlly sweet. i love this facet of his character and feel like we didn’t see enough of it towards the end.

ALSO hua cheng only seems to respect one heavenly official besides xie lian and thats yushi huang.. i assume thats mostly bc she was the only one to help xie lian and let him use the rain master hat to bring water to yong’an. I was thinking maybe when he was a new supreme he had run into trouble and maybe was picked up by the rain master and helped him heal and in return he promised to help protect her village from harm in the future. Like i know a heavenly official wouldn’t cooperate with a ghost like that but yushi huang is different and doesn’t really care about the heavens so i think she would protect him if he could do something to benefit her village. ik this is kinda far fetched but when he first became a supreme I’m sure a bunch of ppl probably tried to mess with him and didn’t rlly believe him to be undefeatable bc he hadn’t proved himself yet also i doubt all his power came overnight. he had to learn how to use it once he escaped the kiln. and some group probably thought they could weaken him somehow. I’m thinking maybe a rlly well formed group of ghosts actually caught him off guard once and he had to retreat and was picked up by the rain master and stayed with her and learned from her a bit. i think it’d be a cool concept also i just rlly want more yushi huang content and i’m on their friendship agenda bc he rlly did seem to actually respect her when she first appeared and i think it’d be cool if the two had some history together.

Also idrc if this was addressed I couldve missed it But!! Did xie lian ever tell Hua cheng that the reason he got the curse shackles and was banished again in the first place wasnt bc jun wu wanted to punish him, but because he requested it. And specifically requested it bc he felt guilty abt letting wu ming take the human face disease and disperse for his sake. So he took the shackles and descended to atone for that?? Bc I dont recall hua cheng learning that bc his soul was already dispersed at that point so it didnt follow him and xie lian didnt say anything so uhhh... someone should tell hua cheng that. Like I dont think xie lian rlly said how much hua cheng meant to him and didnt show him he was loved in grand ways. Also a small thing adding into the whole young ghost king Hua cheng stuff. Its implied and p much stated that hua cheng isnt his real name. That he likely doesnt have a real name bc his parents died? (It's not clear. I'm still mad at mxtx for not making his childhood clearer). So I'd like to see when and why hua cheng chose that name for himself. The new tgcf ending song kinda hints at its meaning with the lyrics "for you I'd fill a city of flowers" as xie lian is the flower wielding martial god so it's probably inspired by that. Also xie lian saved hua cheng from leaping off the city walls but I'd love to hear him say it bc the implication of his name didnt dawn on me for quite a bit and I dont know if everyone made the connection. Again I sure as hell didnt. So itd be cool to see a chapter that takes place in his past after just ascending as a supreme

Overall I rlly think tgcf had a lot more potential to be even better and a lot of that comes down to fleshing out the side characters and letting hualian have more of a storyline independent of one another. like i know the appeal and message of tgcf is that through love, people can overcome anything, but fuck man. i just wanna see what these two (mostly hua cheng) where like in the absence of each others presence. Part of what I really liked abt mdzs is that we got to see that longing develop btw wangxian when the two weren’t together and how they thought about each other and did things in thei others spirit bc they knew the other wouldve done the same thing. but whatever, mxtx was too consumed by her own unhealthy idea of what devotion and true love looks like but still. i rlly think the extras couldve helped the story be better rather than be fujoshi fuel that i try to bleach from my mind -_-

I havemt seen “right or wrong” and i have no desire but from what ive garnered from ppl i like who liked that episode, the show outlined the moral issues with it. Idk if they did it in a way i would have preferred (again no desire) but at lesst from what ive heard it...tries? Idk i dont see the need for these if they dont give us a reason why these ppl should be together and there’s several lines that cannot be crossed that were.
