How stupid it is to add more magical elements to something already magical but that doesn't make sense?

Creating my little half lizard boye alongside my friends was fun, at some point they said sth about me behaving like a reptile (true) and it made me want to portray that into him, but somehow I'm afraid it doesn't make sense anymore? Imma keep it ofc because there are already so many fics I've written about him but the thought of sharing them and having to explain it to outsiders + what they are going to say about it is ... /sighs/

The cons of creating an oc, wanting to share stuff to outsiders and then doubting of your decisions because it may be surrealistic in terms of the world you are creating it is something very real and IT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED TO ME.

when I say that I’d do anything for him

so for a long time now, Hisoka has felt a tug whenever he uses bungee gum

it’s been confusing him for a while but he’s started to get used to it

it doesn’t interfere with his fighting at all but he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t curious about what it meant

if he's got it attached to someone, and they’re not moving, his aura in that is like throbbing

it’s almost like a heartbeat

one day he was just getting himself a drink and when he walked in, his heart started pounding

like bungee gum wasn’t even activated

this must’ve been confusing as hell cos when does Hisoka get nervous

so he’s sitting there, hearing his heartbeat drumming in his ears

then you sit down next to him, also looking for a drink

and the pounding his ears just gets louder and more intense

he turns to you and you look at him

the same sensation is happening to you

the room isn’t hot or anything, and you’re normally a calm person

“can I help you?” you ask

Hisoka notices that he’s been staring at you for too long

but he's got like this gut feeling that you’re someone important

so you strike up a conversation and realize that the two of you didn’t just meet here by coincidence

however, it doesn’t take Hisoka long to realize that there’s something very different about you

he can’t sense you, like at all

then where did the heartbeating come from? 

so he brings it up and you admit that you can’t use nen, you’re not a hunter

*blink blink* 

but Hisoka doesn’t pry on it too much

surprisingly, he doesn’t ditch you and it’s been years since you two met at the bar

he sees you as someone he needs to protect, someone fragile but precious to him

your kind of fragile doesn’t mean weak in his eyes

you’ve got a headstrong personality, that’s important too

sometimes you bring it up and ask him if he’d rather find someone stronger

he’s gently reassuring you that you’re more than enough for him and that he’s glad you’re his soulmate

you’re the calm to his storm when he’s out of control sometimes, trust me this man really appreciates you

just like Hisoka, there was a consistent pulsing inside of him that left him confused for weeks

you were a con artist that was planning to stain the reputation of the Zoldyck leaders

Illumi was assigned to end your life

it wasn’t until he was stalking behind you did he feel the same rhythm in him

he saw you clutch at your chest, then sway a little, rubbing your fingers on your temple

you were about to collapse when he caught you

wait, what was he doing?

but Illumi couldn’t fight the feeling in his gut that you had heard the same beating

with you still in his arms, he just stared down at you, not saying anything

you looked up at him with hazy eyes 

then everything just clicked

the beating in him bursted and you gasped, he knew that meant the same happened to you

slowly, Illumi helps you back up, still staring deeply into your eyes

the two of you can’t seem to draw your attention away from each other

then without warning, he pulls you to his chest

“run” he says

you look up at him in shock and he tells you to run again before Zeno comes

your eyes widen, instantly realizing who he was

“run to the river, I’ll find you there” he says before pushing you in that direction

once you were gone, Illumi was conflicted

he was still trying to figure out what you meant to him

the two of you had never even met before

but Illumi felt like he had to take up the responsibility to protect you

he could sense no aura after all

over the years you spend together, Illumi has learned that he doesn’t need a physically strong partner

your nature covers that

he enjoys the talks you have and for once, Illumi feels comfortable with someone to open up a little more

he has been questioned by Hisoka on why he keeps you by his side, but illumi just goes off 

“what did you say about them?” he says in a calm voice but Hisoka felt a chill down his spine

chrollo lucilfer

chrollo knows youre his soulmate when he’s trying to get an artifact that has caused the beating in his heart to go feral

you refuse to sell it to him though

so normally you’d be dead on the spot lol, not knowing who you’re messing with, but chrollo lets it slide cos everything in the universe is telling him to not kill you

after that, he comes back every day, using the artifact as an excuse to come, but he’s really not interested in it anymore

he wants to know more about you

he learns that the first day he came, you were scared out of your mind, the constant beating had gotten you nervous, as well as his presence

chrollo pulls a face and assures you that he only has good intentions

he knows the secret you’ve been trying to avoid from all your talks together, your weakness

he doesn’t mention it though until months later

you want to accompany him with his “friends”, not knowing the true crimes of the phantom troupe, and brings it up

this also makes him have to explain to you what he does

deep down he’s terrified though that you’ll leave him and think that the two of you aren’t compatible

but you’re understanding

you say that you know not being able to use nen is dangerous in this world

and he,,,he sympathizes with you

he promises you that nothing will happen if you have him, you’re safe with him

he offers for you meet the troupe but you’re hesitant

you don’t want them to look down on you and just see you as easy prey

before you arrive though, chrollo gives them a big talk down

“you even think a single thought about them that’s demeaning and you're out”

soon, they see you as part of them

none of them even think that you’re unworthy

because youre like a good luck charm to them on their missions

chrollo would never even let you stay near the site but you’re watching them nevertheless

them just knowing you’re there makes them 2874x more confident

l’apocalypse c’est pour aujourd’hui juste après le goûter : it could be translated as « apocalypse is scheduled for today right after tea time » except that « goûter » is not quite tea time but rather the little sugary snack kids take when they come back from school and that most adults drop out of (i haven’t and i’m sure az hasn’t either). thanks aziraphale for having exclusively food related notion of the time because tbh same

ligur has no right to be this sexy between ariyon bakare and his french voice actor that’s just not allowed

gender neutral doesn’t ‘quite’ exist in french but pollution has been assigned a female voice actress and masculine pronouns (i’m saying it doesn’t quite exist because officially we have no gender neutral, but it’s a serious wip among lgbt+ circles to the point where it’s started being used in a few medias)

hastur « en attendant qu’un plombier vienne » / « while waiting for a plumber to come » does hell have a special plumber unit or do demons have to call on human plumbers for their pipes damages ? Dang hastur having to call a human plumber for hell’s plumbery is another damn good writing prompt for a crack fic

EP 5 

to get a wiggle on has become « il faut qu’on se remue les fesses », literally « we need to shake our butts » like, yes, se remuer les fesses is a common expression to say « we need to act in order to get things done » but it really casts the image of people shaking their booty to some music and obviously crowley thinks the same Weirdly enough I have almost nothing to say for that episode. Sorry. But we’ve discovered most voice actors and actresses so far and no bit of dialogue really struck me as worth discussing or pointing fingers to mock it.

EP 6 

« on va BROUTER quelques derrières » - « we’re gonna lick some butts » OK THIS IS UNQUESTIONNABLY FAR SUPERIOR IN FRENCH THAN IN ENGLISH you thought LICKING butts was good ??? you really thought that ???? AZIRAPHALE HERE SUGGESTS TO GRAZE BUTTS. TO NIBBLE THEM. TO EAT THEM. TO. MUNCH. ON. THOSE. BUTTS!!!! not just licking, guys. This is as serious step beyond licking. (oh yeah he should have said « botter » instead of brouter btw, which is really just kicking, fyi)

« moi je crois en la paix, pétasse ! » wow, language, pepper (fyi i think « pétasse » is far far worse than « bitch » even if it means roughly the same, pétasse is almost never used while bitch is rather common, so it’s a swear word +++)

I can confirm that Crowley offers Aziraphale to not just stay at his place, but to move in with him. « tu peux t’installer chez moi si tu veux ». omg they were roommates.

Bad translation strikes again : i don’t know why, but the french dub doesn’t have the « tickety-boo » / « ça gaze » being referenced as Rampa / Aziraphale is being knocked down, which is… a real mistep. It was narratively significant and I’m quite mad the translators missed it.

The Jesse James explanation from Newt has become very nonsensical, instead of the neat and to the point pun « wherever I go I hold up trafic » we’re getting a circonvoluted « because it’s a crime to mechanic’s diligence ». I’m not judging that one too hard, I have no idea how to make it better, and that’s probably how it was translated in the book as well thirty years ago, but it definitely doesn’t have the same impact. On the other hand, it definitely IS a very bad joke that doesn’t even deserve a chuckle, so Anathema’s embarassement really matches the audience’s (aka mine).

OVERALL :

I wasn’t convinced by Crowley… I mean, Rampa’s voice at first, but as the nerdiness showed up it really grew on me. I still think that french dubs have often problems with some voice inflexions every here and there, and for instance in Rampa’s case it was when he was annoyed or frustrated ( at the Globe when complaining about horses and Shakespeare’s plays that aren’t comedies, and also when discussing Azirphale’s magic tricks, it’s like… there is a step between having the right amount of grumpy complaining and overdoing it that is overlooked. It’s overacted, it should have been a bit quieter imo. I don’t mean to criticize voice actors too hard either but as an audience watching french dubs this is a very recurring problem and it always feels off to me. It’s actually one of the main reasons I avoid french dubs whenever possible.)

I have a hard time judging Aziraphale’s voice dub because it clashes so much with both the idea I had formed with it when I read the book and Sheen’s delivery that I just… kinda filtered it. It was too high pitched for me, and too anxious (though for this last point I must admit it could be funny at times, but I’m not fond of this character portrayal). The rest of the cast was rather good, nothing to complain about. There wasn’t anything stellar either, but everything that needed to be conveyed was and it was professionnal. It was also very homogeneous, no voice really struck me as being way too bad or way too good compared to the others, so it was really consistant.

So I don’t have much to complain about overall despite a few wonky translations here and there, BUT there is one thing I felt very robbed of : Crowley calling Aziraphale « mon ange » happens only once, when giving a lift to Anathema, and I’m almost certain they translated it that way because otherwise the joke about Anathama mistaking them for a couple wouldn’t work. So, they were forced to make it that way. The rest of the time Crowley calls Aziraphale « l’angelot », and despite being literally translated by « little angel », it feels sarcastic more than anything else ( the « L’ » in front of « angelot » is part of the reason why, it creates some distance, the other reason being that this word in itself has a very corny vibe and people being affectionnate to each other wouldn’t use it as a term of endearment). So, that’s a shame.

I like the English dub much much MUCH better than the French, but the french wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. The voice actors and actresses were quite good, the dialogues mostly faithful and endearing despite a few really missed steps. It really had its moments. Props to brouter des derrières, that one was fantastic.

The thing about making a winx rewrite that’s basically just for me, is that when I feel like quitting, I can’t give myself a pep talk.

Like I know it’s probably just stress, but there are days like today when I can look at the 3,730ish word count of Week 22 and go “so what? who cares? it’s been literal years, why bother anymore?”

I got a review on AO3 the other day, on one of the more recent fics I’ve been able to get out.

It’s been a while since I’ve managed to write things in proper format, let alone had the courage to post, so even though I feel guilty about the fandom, I was proud I’d managed it.

The review was asking me if another series (WAC) was discontinued.

The commenter was an Anon user, but I didn’t recognise their handle, and I double checked, they’ve never left a comment on the Alt Con before.

I had the same trouble with my Zuko centric fic on FF.Net.

Too often it feels like no one seems to care or have anything to say about my work unless I’m “not updating them fast enough”.

It makes me feel so spiteful, especially when it comes from people with a bookmark list 800+ long with 0 fics of their own.

I post things because I want to share them with everyone, but this is not a job I’m doing, people shouldn’t get to demand.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble writing this past year and a half, the referrix project was something I was doing for myself to help me figure out the layout of Alfea, but also as an excuse to remind myself of why I loved Winx Club.

Somedays though, it’s hard to muster up the energy to care.

I want to quit.

WWE Smackdown Live 6/11/19 Review

We started with a rendition of Miz TV. Miz had a new shirt of his dad having his fists up at Wrestlemania, and I guess he was being forced to host this edition. He was reading off of a literal script for Shane. He kept saying best in the world wrong for a laugh, but it wasn’t much of anything. Shane then came out with Drew McIntyre and Elias. Elias was the musical guest, and the crowd chanted you suck at him. Miz called out Shane for having only tainted wins, which Shane didn’t seem to care about. Mcintyre talked about how he would beat Roman at stomping ground. Miz pointed out that McIntyre is wasting his potential by being Shane’s lackey, which makes a lot of sense. Shane and Miz started to hurl insults at each other, and nearly came to blows. Shane challenged Miz to a gauntlet match. If he could beat both Elias and McIntyre, then he could fight Shane. 

So, we went right into the matches, starting with Miz vs. Elias. This was the match where I noticed that Miz doesn’t do the corner dropkicks like Daniel Bryan anymore, but he does corner knees. Interesting way to make the move his own, and to transition into a face role. Miz quickly took care of Elias by dodging an elbow drop and hitting the skull crushing finale for three. 

He then fought Drew McIntyre. Miz was actually brutally beating down McIntyre for a lot of this match, such as a super stiff baseball slide and a brawl on the outside. At one point, Miz went for the skull crushing finale, but Shane distracted him, so McIntyre could get the Glasgow kiss, and then a claymore for the win. 

After that happened, Shane said that he would still fight Miz. There was actually a bit of back and forth until Shane locked in a triangle for the win. 

Grade: B-. I wasn’t sure about putting this whole segment on the positive side, but I think the matches were mostly fine, and the heel work from Shane at the end there was really good. So yeah, I’ll give this a B-. I normally don’t like the style of heel that Shane is, smarmy but also not quite good enough at being smarmy. But this was probably his best work, challenging a beaten down Miz like that. I liked it, especially how happy he was that he is now 3-0 over Miz. That record is bullshit and shouldn’t exist, but at least it’s because Shane is being a dick. 

Backstage, Ember Moon talked to Fire and Desire while she was playing on a switch. They told her to focus on a real life superhero like Mandy Rose, and then smacked the switch out of her hand and left. Moon was pissed and threw some stuff.

Then we had the Planets Tag Team Champions. Daniel Bryan said that there would be a title match, against a couple Jobbers holding cardboard titles. But before they got going, Heavy Machinery came out to interrupt. Heavy Machinery said that they were ducking the challenge for the belts. So, Daniel Bryan said that if they can beat the jobbers, they will get a title match. Heavy Machinery won quickly with the compactor.

Grade: C. Yeah this was an inoffensive squash match, but I’m also rewinding the grade a bit because Heavy Machinery was off TV for so long and are now just getting a title match. That is BS, but they are certainly the team that should get it. 

Backstage, R-Truth and Carmella were talking about how terrible being the 24/7 champion was. He said that he pinned Jinder on a plane 49,000 feet celsius, that was funny. Carmella heard someone coming, so she told Truth to get in a box. It turned out only to be a production guy, but the case locked and Carmella had to leave for a match with Sonya Deville. So she left, and Jinder showed up and tried to open it, pretending to be Carmella as he did, So this was the 24/7 shenanigans of the evening, and I was into it. 

So we came back to the match between Carmella and Sonya Deville. At one point, Carmella locked in the code of silence, but Rose put Deville’s foot on the rope to break things up. She chased Rose around, but Deville caught her with a brutal knee to the stomach for a near fall. Carmella then threw Deville out of the ring, and gave both women a suicide dive, hitting Rose with an extra superkick. As Carmella went back in, Deville hit a step up knee for the win.

Grade: C-. Lots of interference, and it was not wrestled the best. I really don’t care much for this feud, and it seems just to be a placeholder before fire and desire break up. So not a great match, and I think it’d be much better if Carmella was actually involved in the 24/7 championship picture.

So then we had Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross backstage. Bliss told Cross that a bunch of people were being mean to her on social media, and that Bayley liked one of them. She said that Bayley is the same as everyone who calls Cross names. She told Cross not to hold back during her match with Bayley. I like how Bliss is manipulating Cross here, it is good. I wish it was someone who wasn’t supposed to be a crazy person, but its fine.

Then we the return of Big E, ahead of the 6-man tag later on. New Day cut a promo and they joked about how if Big E had a title run for every time that he returned, he would be Charlotte Flair. Kofi said it was a booking joke, and Woods cut him off by talking about their match. They talked about how Kofi has beaten all of their opponents at one point or another. Ziggler interrupted, and talked about how Kofi cheated to beat him at super showdown. Kofi just said that it was revenge for Ziggler kicking Woods earlier in the match, but then Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn interrupted. Zayn and Owens said that it was injustice, and I found it was difficult to disagree with the heels here. Zayn said that the rules are more important than who the fans like. Zayn called the fans hypocrites, and I kinda get where he is coming from. Big E then put over Kingston and defended him, and Kofi told him that he won’t have any more excuses after the steel cage match. 

Grade: C. Everyone could talk in this segment, but it was very filler, and the heels were being perfectly reasonable. A heel promo that really makes the good guys look like the bad guys are a problem. Ziggler has every right to be mad, Kofi did cheat. So it’s difficult to say he is in the wrong.

Then we had Bayley backstage, being asked about Bliss manipulating Cross, and Bayley just didn’t care.

Then we had Aleister Black continuing to offer an open challenge. He had someone open the door, and shout out of it, saying that the door is wide open. Black is so much better than this. 

We went right into Bayley vs. Nikki Cross. They were brawling right at the bell. At one point, Bayley went for the dropkick under the corner on the outside, but Cross trapped her behind the apron and beat her down. Bliss did get involved minorly at one point, distracting her and allowing Cross to get a cradle for a near fall. Bayley got the win with the elbow drop, staring right at Bliss when she did.

Grade: C+. Match didn’t have much to it, but I did like how Bayley looked right at Bliss when she hit the finish. Other than that this was a nothing match.

Jinder went back to get Truth out of the box, but it was gone. Truth was still in the box, and he was getting shipped to LA in the box. 

24/7 stuff: B-. Not nearly as funny as the stuff on Raw, but still good. I like this gag, and it’ll be resolved on monday. 

Then we had Apollo Crews being interviewed about the attack from Andrade last week. Zelina Vega showed up to run him down, and told Crews to stay away from Andrade. Then randomly, Chad Gable was there taking notes. I-I don’t know why.

And into the main event, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Dolph Ziggler vs. the New Day.  A lot of fast paced action here, and oddly enough Kingston was normally the one on the backfoot. At one point, Woods went up for the limit breaker, but Ziggler crotched him on the top rope. On commentary, Graves emphasized the fact that the face commentators are always okay with the faces cheating, which I though was quite interesting. At one point, Kevin Owens hit a moonsault for a near fall, and I would love to see that move enter his arsenal more. Big E had a huge hot tag during the match, destroying Ziggler with suplexes and a splash. Ziggler blind tagged in Zayn, who held Kofi for a superkick. Kofi dodged so it hit Zayn, and Kofi nailed Ziggler with a trouble in paradise, followed by another one to Zayn for the win.

Grade: B-. Fast paced action and a good pickup for Kofi. I might’ve preferred to see Big E pick up the win, but I will never argue with making a champion strong. Good stuff here, and the match of the night. 

Also, something I noticed that happened tonight was that on commentary, they keep mentioning how WWE is the only “cross cultural” sports entertainment company in the world. So that is them taking pot shots at AEW. 

Overall Grade: C+

Pros: nothing overtly good, but i thought that Graves gave a good commentary performance.

So I felt a need to tell this little story. It happened to me this last weekend, and well, I’ve never experienced anything like this.

Day 0, aka Thursday, was set up day. I had headed down to the event to set up so I would not have to Friday, giving me a chance to dress up in cosplay. My friend had bought a vendor booth, a 8x8 space, and myself a regular artist alley table. So I didn’t really go to her area very much. That night she stayed at my place and she told me her neighbors near her had legit locked her into her space.

By this I mean the con had set up the booths side by side, with no entrance/exit gaps at all. The con assumed each vendor would figure out how to get out, and they’re entitled to literally every square inch of their paid space. (I find this a bit appalling.) Somehow she went from a corner space to a middle space, resulting in her neighbors boxing her in. The con changed the layout from the conbook, as the two booths to her sides were flat up against her. So I wanted to see what she meant, so next day I decided to check out her space.

Sure enough, one side had a huge curtain where the other vendor had put his tables out to the edges, and he was curled up into a small space he had created. Ok. So her other side had a smaller half pipe and drain wall, but that person had decided to attach their gridwalls to said pipe and drape, resulting in my friend not being able to get out. I saw the vendor there setting up, with nothing on the stuff, so I approached her.

“Hey so my friend next to you can’t get out. I doubt that’s fire code safe. If an emergency occurred how can she get out-”

She cut me off. “LISTEN honey. I’ve been told this by three other people.”

“Ok, but how about just swinging out your display a few feet, giving her at least SOME clearance-” Again, cut off.

“NO NO LISTEN. It will break. You’re asking me to break my walls! I’m Hormonal, and they told me this isn’t fire code!!”

“Huh.. what.. ok. (what does being on your period have to do with anything?) But if the fire marshal were to come down here I doubt he’d approve that. She can’t get out-”

“SHUT UP. I’M PREGNANT. LEAVE ME ALONE. NOW!!!!”

She kept shouting like a five year old, saying to leave her alone, and I felt my adrenaline kicking in so I said fuck it and turned around. Right there was the AA hall manager. I leaned in whispering “How can that be fire code?” She didn’t support me. Saying- “It is fire code. We checked. You’re allowed. Every. Square. Inch. of your space.” Feeling defeated, I left.

Now after that I did get the adrenaline dump, and I almost broke down crying. It really reminded me of the fight I had with my boss over a year ago, and goes to show I cannot stand people like that. People who think excuses like gender have anything to do with anything, and that shouting means you’re right. All throughout the con this vendor kept breaking rules left and right, but nothing was done. I avoided her like the plague, just to make sure I didn’t cause anymore reason for her to torture me. Luckily Saturday I wore a wig and a costume, so I doubt she’d recognize me. But my friend had to roll under her table, and actually the guy behind her was also blocked in too by this heartless bitch, so he too had to tuck and roll.

However my friend was offered two other spots, but she refused. I also suggested her to slide her table into her space to give her that exit, but she also refused. So it was also on her end. But I’m sort of glad I’m no longer selling at this event. Besides this, even my artist alley area was super crowded. I saw too many tables with 3+ people behind the tables, resulting in literally me bumping everyone to get out to pee.

So yeah. That’s my story.

The first time Logan saw the mark in his arm he was 7, he asked his parents about it and both smiled at the young child

“It’s the mark of your own one true love”

“My one true love?”

“It’s the person who will love you no matter what, like how papa and I love each other”

“Do you have a mark?”

“In fact we do, here, see for yourself”

In Roman and Patton’s left collarbone stood a mark as big as a hand, a complex design of a crest and a tiger surrounded by warm oranges, soft purples and light reds. Logan stared at his parents mark with awe; it was so big compared to his own

“What does it mean?”

Patton smiled before lowering himself to the eyesight of his son, and softly ruffled his hair

“The crest represents papa, along with a few of the reds and most of the purple”

“Why a crest?”

“Because papa has a lot of influence, and crests represent royalty”

“Then why are you a tiger Dad?”

“Let’s make papa explain that one yeah?”

Roman chuckled quietly, it did made sense though. He lowered to stare at his son in the eyes, Logan staring intently at his papa with his big blue eyes. Roman was always amazed at them, his son was so smart even when he was so young

“A tiger because your daddy is protective, he is a fighter. He is as regal and dangerous as one”

Those words, said with so much security and conviction, burned deep into the mind of the child. His parents loved each other and that was clear, but he had never really noticed the extent. His still developing mind couldn’t grasp the concept of loving each other as much.

The second time Logan noticed his mark was because of his teacher explaining how some marks took longer to appear, and how others took longer to define. How the lucky ones had their mark formed and defined all in the same week. How nothing of that signified a deeper or stronger love, just that different bodies reacted differently.

After that class Logan spent the whole day lightly touching his mark and smiling softly at the tug of feeling he got whenever his soul mate touched his own mark

After that it was a small constant, a reassurance that he had someone who loved and will love him no matter what his classmates said. There was someone somewhere touching his mark at the same time and smiling, there was someone out there that was specifically for him.

High school was… well, it was hard. The teachers were constantly expecting more, and more, and more out of Logan and he wasn’t sure he’ll be able to keep up with their expectations. Add to that the fact he could feel a lot of sadness through the bond and that he felt useless for not being able to do enough and… Well, it wasn’t exactly a good couple of years.

College wasn’t all that different, but thankfully for Logan Talyn and Joan were going to the same college he was and he wouldn’t be too alone, even if all three of them had ended up in different mayors.

He still touched his mark, and felt the connection to his Special Other as clear as he possibly could, but it wasn’t as constant as when both where in high school. Thankfully more often than not the feeling was calm, it was like his soul mate had finally found what made him happy, or maybe he wasn’t in a bad situation anymore.

There were studies in the marks, of course they were. And what most scientist had figure out was that soul mates had a 1-2 year of difference, and that the closer they were the more strong they could feel each other through the mark.

That’s why, when Logan noticed a strong feeling of happiness he was slightly startled. He knew the happiness wasn’t from himself (and honestly who could be happy when he had had to do most of the project alone?) and it felt closer than ever before.

He decided to ignore it for the sake of his emotions, he didn’t wanted to feel disappointed later on, and continue going on his way to the Graphic Design department. Talyn had barely eaten lately and was almost always half asleep whenever he and Joan had managed to get them away from the computer for long. Honestly, obsessing over their project probably wasn’t good for them and yet they still claimed their blood was 90% coffee and junk food.

Once he reached the computer room (was that a kid with a sleep bag? And oh hey, there was another one surrounded by empty candy wrappers and more than 3 Coca-Cola bottles. How were they all alive?) He approached the most… alive looking person in the room. If Logan were to be open he would say the boy was stunning, slightly shorter than the bespectacled boy, with dark bangs covering an eye and dark eye bags under his deep green eyes, a small smirk lifting a side of his face. A simple glasses frame completed the whole picture and made Logan forget how to breathe momentarily.

“Excuse me?”

The boy looked started, jumping a little in his seat and setting a hand on top of his chest

“Y-yeah?”

“Apologies, I was wondering if you knew Talyn?”

“Oh yeah! Friend of mine. Joan came pick them up a little ago. Collapse from lack of sleep, it happens. How’d you know Talyn?”

Logan stared at the boy startled, how was that even a normal occurrence?

“Also a friend of mine, I’m Logan, pretty sure they’ve talked about me. Hopefully you are nowhere near the “collapsing” stage?”

“A little?” The boy looked sheepish “Only got a coke to drink and a sandwich”

“Well, it looks like I am dragging someone to eat anyway. Don’t worry, I pay”

The shorter boy stared at Logan for a second, probably weighting the pros and cons of making someone else pay for his food. But eventually his stomach decided for him, making him blush and bringing a small smile to Logan’s face.

“Thanks… I’m Andrew by the way”

“Pleased to meet you Andrew”

It became routine after that, Logan and Joan would go fetch the two graphic designers and drag them to get actual food and something to drink that hopefully wasn’t coffee or Coca-Cola, and if they were lucky enough the other two would be tired enough to actually sleep instead of surviving by naps (It was hard to decide at first who should carry who, but they settled when the two asleep ones made the choice for them. Talyn grabbing Joan and Andrew curling up near Logan, both seeking for warm)

Logan was curious though, as he always was, because he had never saw Andrew’s mark. He had seen both marks and knew that Joan and Talyn were soul mates, but the nature of their relationship was pretty much platonic so far. And the two had seen his mark already, but none of them had seen Andrew’s mark. It was probably because when they all became friends it was winter, and all of them had been bundled up as much as possible in order to save heat.

In a small part of his brain Logan hoped, with everything he had, that the mark would be the twin to his own. It was a thought that usually made him feel guilty because you weren’t supposed to love anyone but your soul mate… but there was something about Andrew, like some sort of magnetic energy, which pulled him to the boy and made him think those traitors “What if”

Logan’s mark was being surrounded by warm, and happiness, and wow if someone were to throw him to a wall he may stick to it with so much sap. His soul mate had been so happy lately, but today it felt like he was a kid in Christmas morning. And hey, maybe he had the spring to thank for that but he was definitely thankful.

“Guys!”

“Yo Talyn”

“Wait, where’s Andrew?”

“Said he was going to buy more Coca-Cola”

“Okay, I have news but we need to wait for him”

A few minutes later the boy appeared in the range of vision, drinking out of one Coke bottle and clutching a second one in his right hand. When he reached the table and noticed the concerned stares of two out of three he shrugged

“I have to finish a web page for tomorrow, need energy and coffee taste horrible”

“Ugh I forgot. Anyway, let’s not talk about horrible things and let’s talk about how my dad got me the house on the beach for a full week! You three are invited and can’t say no”

“Page design is not horrible. And we are not exactly invited, more like kidnaped”

“An, darling, shush and enjoy the good news”

“When are we leaving?”

“Next month, but prepare to leave at any second!”

A month after that conversation they were all contemplating the house. It was big enough to fit the 4 of them comfortably, and close enough to the beach that they didn’t need a car. They spent the full first day cleaning and setting down their things, but by the second day Joan and Talyn were urging the other two to go down to the beach. Both shared a look and sighed, they couldn’t say no to their friends.

Once they reached the beach and set down the beach umbrella Talyn and Joan jumped right in the water. Logan stared at Andrew a few seconds and sat down beside him

“Are you going to join them?”

“Are you?”

“Perhaps later”

“Same, besides I need to wear sunscreen or I burn like a lobster”

“Would you like a hand on that?”

At Logan outburst (because he really didn’t planed on asking that) both blushed, but Andrew ducked his head and took off his shirt without looking at the taller one.

Logan couldn’t help it, he gasped. There, sitting in the top part of Andrew’s arm and looking as innocently as possible, was the design of a crow and a dove, along with hues of deep blue and black. Both birds were snuggling each other. He traced a finger delicately over the design and smiled, it was the twin design of his mark

“Andrew?”

“Yeah?”

“I love you”

Andrew turned around to stare at Logan in disbelieve, blushing fiercely and gapping. Logan let a rare and soft smile show, really, his soul mate was just too cute.

“Wha- Logan?”

“I love you, I’ve been in love with you since the day I started carrying you to your room”

“Why are you…”

“Because we are soul mates, and I couldn’t stand not telling you”

With that Logan took off his shirt, showing the twin mark to the one Andrew had. The younger boy stared at the mar for a second, his hand automatically reaching out to touch it.

Tears had gathered around Andrew eyes, and in a moment of bravery he jumped hugging Logan and with the impulse throwing the two of them at the sand

“I’ve been in love with you for so long that I forgot what not loving you feels like”

Logan laughed, hugging his partner closer to him and kissing the top of his head. He had never felt as happy as he did now.

Jan 4 Blurr’s Horror Stream - The Birds

Half the room wanted the birds to get on with it and kill people. There was plentiful theorization about the cause of the birds’ behavior. Shockwave was just glad that birds are real. Prowl graciously loaned his imaginary sham-wow to Whirl, who later passed it on to Laserbeak, who got strangled by dust when it disappeared.

Life Under State of Emergency: Tokyo and Rural Areas

  Previously, we looked at how the state of emergency was affecting the lives of anime fans in Japan, focusing on the areas of Kyoto and Sendai. Today in part two, we speak with two people who live in Tokyo and a rural area outside of the main cities to get their perspective and feelings on how the “lockdown” is affecting them. We asked them all the same questions to get their differing points of view.

  I spoke to cosplayer, writer, and Tokyo native, Kaho Shibuya, who in her past has been a newspaper reporter, a TV, radio and YouTube channel host, and a teacher among a vast array of other colorful professions. She lives in the heart of Tokyo.

  Firstly, how are you doing in the “lockdown,” even though it’s not technically a lockdown?

  Under our current law, the Japanese government can’t force us to stay at home, so there are some people not behaving the way we’re advised to. Yet things have definitely changed when the prime minister declared a state of emergency: In major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, a great number of shops have closed, so you don’t have destinations for just hanging out anymore.

  The transportation system, however, hasn’t been affected so people can still commute. With how punctual and on-time our train system is, people are still heading to school/work. The extremely crowded train ride in Persona 5 isn’t exaggerated at all and is still happening.

  This means unless you can work at home or you work for a company where they care about your health your job puts you at a higher risk of infection.

  How has the quarantine affected you personally?

  Actually, I hardly go out to socialize other than work. As a non-drinker, I would be happy only going out to attend business meetings or networking gatherings. All my friends are business-related so when we naturally come together, we work together.

  My hobbies are reading manga and watching anime, evidentially, alone. My favorite genre is RPGs, which doesn’t require another player. I live very close to my parents. Quarantine thus far hasn’t affected my personal life at all.

  My work gives me an excuse to talk to people and be an extrovert, so I cherish it very much. Otherwise, I’m an indoor otaku detached from society.

  What about professionally?

  I have many deadlines to meet: weekly, biweekly, and monthly columns, plus my upcoming book. There is still a lot on my plate, though I usually visit a café or somewhere not my room to work. Staying at home makes it absolutely difficult to concentrate.

  Usually, my favorite workplaces have been the worst locations to go to due to during the coronavirus crisis because of their confined spaces, like karaoke and manga cafés to name a few. Japanese people often use karaoke places for business talks because you don’t have to worry about others listening to your conversations and waiters won’t bother you. Manga cafés give you access to almost every popular show and magazines in print. You appreciate the sanctuary if you’re a classic physical book lover like myself.

  Was there anything you were looking forward to that has now been canceled?

  I’ve had the luxury of visiting quite a few conventions overseas as a guest and was looking forward to going more this year before you-know-what happened. My last con was Anime Los Angeles back in January, and I miss the geeky energy there.

  I was going to voice the main role in a new anime show and was really looking forward to it, then the production was delayed due to COVID-19. In fact, a lot of TV series and movies I’ve been waiting for have been postponed such as Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- and Case Closed.

    Is there anything you’ve started to do because of the lockdown?

  I’ve actually joined Twitch and started streaming in April. With everyone experiencing isolation, I thought it’s important now more than ever to stay connected and share the same moments together live.

  I don’t show much of my private side on social media, almost always posting pictures from professional photo shoots plus simple puns and messages, so streaming for hours from my room is definitely something new. It’s not only a good way to tell people how I’m doing through webcam, but what kind of person I really am beneath all those smug model pictures. Some might want nothing other than sexy from me, for sure, while others might relate more because I relate a lot to the topics Twitch users talk about.

  Streaming on Twitch, I can practice speaking English since there are way more English-speakers on the platform than Japanese, and I get to talk passionately about manga/anime/light novels/games in the chat room with people who are really into those things and want to genuinely know about Japan. Especially with cons getting canceled where I get to weeb out together with my international fans whom I cannot see often because of the obvious long-distance in between, interacting with them and staying passionate about our favorite things is what I crave. Like talking about the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba stamp-rally I went to in Kyoto, or other Japanese-related anime events.

  Although, if it weren’t for lockdown, I wouldn’t consider making my own account since I’m so not a tech nerd (just a nerd, period). But my friends offered to help out and I’m truly lucky that I have them. I’m in good hands and now thinking of setting up for game streaming and more!

  What are you using to cope with being forced to stay inside?

  Now that new episodes of seasonal anime have been suspended, I take this time to go back to older shows, like Bleach, Gintama, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Angel Beats, and Steins;Gate, all from 2004 to 2011 when I only have a vague memory of following every single episode because we didn’t have anime streaming sites to catch up. While the first two are very long to binge-watch, the middle two series have only 12 episodes, then the last one is somewhere in between plus its extra season Steins;Gate 0.

  Currently, I’m watching Mob Psycho 100 in English, all thanks to Crunchyroll by the way! I want to digest amazing shows in English too so that I get to talk with more people about them.

  How has your neighborhood/town changed?

  Considering it’s central Tokyo, the number of people I see on the street is now surprisingly low, especially on weekends and late at night. Some shops and offices have either closed or shorten their business hours, so it’s very quiet in the evening.

  What are you looking forward to once everything is over?

  Once this pandemic is subdued, I’m planning to have my first gig as an Anisong DJ! I’ve been practicing and was going to debut in April, so now I have to make my performance worth the wait!

  I’d been to some clubs that played mainly anime songs in Japan, but when I attended Kawaii Kon in Hawaii, I made friends with AniParty members from NY at the LUMICA booth, and their energy and audiences were great. I wanted to be a part of that, bringing smiles and music to dance to, letting everyone know about stunning OPs and EDs.

  In addition to signing, paneling, cosplaying, and emceeing, I’ve been eager to contribute more to events. Some other projects are going on too which I can reveal at my next con, whenever that is. This stay-at-home time is for me to grow, and after that, it’s time to show!

  How do you feel about Japan’s response to the pandemic?

  It was quite a long time before our government took things seriously. I mean, they should’ve regulated if not banned traveling, they were very reluctant to make that decision.

  If such action was made earlier, I believe we could’ve been in a much better situation. Given that we have a bigger personal space in social interaction; we rarely hug or even handshake, and we’re used to wearing masks because of hay fever in the spring. And more than everything, our biggest city, Tokyo, is incredibly clean and safe compared to other big cities in the world. I hope you all get to visit when this international fear is gone …

  Any other stories you’d like to tell?

  A lot of my friends from overseas reached out to me to make sure I was okay, which was incredibly nice. In these hard times, you realize the importance of people around you, you discover who is really precious to you and who feels the same way about you in return. Without the quarantine, we are usually too busy living our own lives every day to ever think about things like that.

    Finally, I spoke to Ernest Lin, an American who has lived in Japan for the last three years and currently quite a way out of Tokyo — outside of the four main prefectures. He’s a senior editor at the video game website PlayStation Universe and works as a consultant in Japan in various fields.

  Firstly, how are you doing in the “lockdown,” even though it’s not technically a lockdown?

  Surviving so far — things for me could be worse but could be better.

  How has the quarantine affected you personally?

  There's an overall sense of anxiety that I feel has been cast over everyday life. There are days where my mood has been pretty gloomy. Obviously, not going out as much and being separated from friends and others has played a part in that. I follow the news of the COVID-19 situation in Japan and America a lot, so I'm especially worried about my friends and family around the world.

  What about professionally?

  Ah, unfortunately, it has affected me in that regard. I missed out on some work — there are a few of my on-going projects on indefinite hold until the situation quells. Additionally, it's been hard to get some other things off the ground.

  Was there anything you were looking forward to that has now been canceled?

  Oh, at this point it feels like countless things — anime and gaming industry events, other festivals here in Japan, various movies, and series releases. With everything else going on bringing perspective, the cancellations and delays are only slightly disappointments. I completely understand and support them if it means keeping more people out of harm.

  Is there anything you’ve started to do because of the lockdown?

  I started cooking more. The situation has given me time to work on bigger personal projects. Also, I've been able to catch up with loved ones, especially back in America, via voice and video calls.

  What are you using to cope with being forced to stay inside?

  I use some of the time to study more Japanese and organize my living space. Games have been a nice temporary escape (Final Fantasy VII Remake has been perfect for that!) and multiplayer ones like Fortnite have served as digital hang-out spaces to replace meeting up in real life.

  Before the "lockdown," I hadn't binged many shows in a while since my job and other life stuff usually kept me really busy. Like everyone and their mom, I watched through Netflix's Tiger King. I've tried catching up on some anime shows I missed in the past. I recently finished Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai plus its sequel film and was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved them.

  How has your neighborhood/town changed?

  Places, in general, are a little less crowded and various public spaces and businesses are temporarily closed or at reduced hours. Almost everyone is wearing masks.

  What are you looking forward to once everything is over?

  Karaoke for sure.

  How do you feel about Japan’s response to the pandemic?

  Frankly, I do not believe the measures that have been taken have not been swift or adequate enough. It's one of the reasons I'm constantly concerned about the situation spiraling into something worse ... I hope it doesn't, but I'm always afraid it will.

  Any other stories you’d like to tell?

  A month or so ago, I was attending a meeting to check out a property for a project. I showed up at the entrance without a mask, and before we could proceed with the meeting, one of the staff made a remark about how I didn't have a mask. Embarrassed, I realized I had forgotten to wear one (I was born and raised in America, so I sometimes forget). Fortunately, I had extras in the car, so I ran back and came back with one on.

  Around that time, I had a dinner meeting where the food was self-serve, buffet-style, but we were given gloves to wear while using the tongs and such. That was a first for me.

Rest in Peace, Drunk Sumukh

On April 25, 2015, I had a hard look at myself in the mirror. It sounds cliché but it was exactly what happened. I had experienced one too many hangovers. I had experienced too much of the rollercoaster ride that was my life, my emotions, and my interaction with alcohol. I knew I was on the cusp of self-destruction.

I realized I had to decide if I wanted to keep on drinking or not. It really was a coin flip at the time. The pros and cons seemed even. There was really a part of me that wanted to keep on drinking and saw no problem with it. I had kept up appearances with it for 9 years. It had become a part of my identity. Why would I leave it?

I decided to rank the most important things in my life. Here’s how that ranking broke down at the time:

1.       My family

2.       Comedy

3.       Alcohol

4.       My job

5.       My relationship

Let’s count down this list like Casey Kasem. At #5, my relationship. At this point, my relationship was on the mend but still in tatters. Three months earlier, I had given an ultimatum to my partner: she needed to stop drinking or our relationship was over. She clearly was an alcoholic. Whenever we would drink together, it wasn’t fun anymore. It would just lead to arguments. I didn’t enjoy being with her. I’m not sure she enjoyed being with me. But we did love each other. It’s just that the choices we were making in life and not addressing our personal issues was clouding that love. Of course, even after she made the decision to stop drinking, I kept on drinking. We didn’t think I was the one with the problem. I hid my drinking a lot better than she did. But, within 3 months, I had to ask myself if this was healthy and if this level of drinking was what I wanted for my life. And, at that point, I still was ranking alcohol above a relationship that felt unhappy and that seemed like it would inevitably break down.

At #4, my job. Sure, it’s rare that you can actually love your job. But, drinking had clouded my mind towards how I perceived my job. I have a good job and I’m good at it and work with people I like. But, because of alcohol and my pursuit of comedy, it made me believe that my job was somehow not as important in the grander scheme of things as alcohol or having fun or eventually having comedy be my full-time job. In hindsight, this is absurd. My job funds my life. It allowed me to fund the alcohol I was consuming. Yet, it ranked lower in importance than alcohol. That’s obviously a problem.

At #3 is alcohol. I don’t think I need to write more about its place in my life at the time. It’s all here from what I wrote 15 months in. I loved alcohol. It became a part of my identity and who I was which is how it could push aside both someone who loved me and my livelihood in level of importance.

At #2 is comedy. I loved doing stand-up comedy. I wanted it to be my full-time job. But as much as I loved comedy, I also mixed everything that came with it and made that a part of comedy. I loved the social aspects to comedy because it allowed me to escape who I actually was. Drinking allowed me to not be shy anymore. It allowed me to be more confident. It, in my mind, allowed me to make up for all the shortcomings I had when I was sober. It somehow made me feel like I was better at comedy and in the world of comedy because I was more social and because it felt as if everyone (from comedians to audience members to staff) were drinking. Drinking allowed me to feel like I belonged in the unique world of comedy that was the first place I felt like I ever fit in.

At #1 is my family. I love my parents and my brother more than anything in the world. Why wouldn’t I? They’ve known me for my entire life. They’ve loved me for my entire life. And that hit me the most. Would they love and be proud of this version of me? The version that hid an alcohol problem from them. The version that was ready to self-destruct. The version that was ready to throw away all that I had accomplished and all that education for alcohol. The version that basically insulted all that they had taught me.

That’s where my ultimate decision came from to stop drinking. It came from the realization that the top priorities on this list were stronger than alcohol and that the priorities below it needed to be pushed above it. At 30 years old, alcohol wasn’t worth it anymore. It was very close to destroying my relationship. It was on the path to destroying my job. It could destroy my love for comedy. At the absolute worst, it could destroy my connection with my family. It was time to push alcohol off this list. It was time to value the 4 most important things in my life all together.

After I stopped drinking, I began to investigate sobriety and who I was as a drinker. I came to realize I was a high-functioning alcoholic. I was able to do my job, do comedy, be a son, be a brother, and be a partner while pounding beers. I was social and successful. I didn’t get in trouble with the law. I didn’t cause any permanent damage in my personal relationships. Because of that high-functioning nature, I was able to successfully weave my life with alcohol being a part of it. No one knew the extent of it except my partner who was dealing with her own alcohol issues and mental demons and our arguments were representative of that. But, I realized that the high-functioning could only go on for so long. At some point, I’d slip and all of the things that actually truly mattered to me could slowly disappear.

In January 2015, following what felt like the last straw for my relationship with my partner, I gave her an ultimatum: alcohol or me. She stopped drinking. In hindsight, I’m immensely proud of her. At the time, it seemed like nothing to me. I kept on drinking for 3 months at the same rate I always had or maybe even more. In hindsight, it wasn’t fair. I wasn’t the one seen as having the problem. This is the great danger of high-functioning alcoholism. All of the success and stability that you have elsewhere excuses the level of your drinking.

Internally, I knew I was ready to implode and self-destruct. So I decided to stop. I stopped for my family, my partner, my job, my comedy. I stopped for really every single person that encountered me and thought highly of me. I think I’ve garnered the respect of my peers whether it be in my personal life or in comedy or in my working life for the amount of self-discipline that I have. So, I poured all that self-discipline into stopping drinking. I’m an intelligent person and it was time to grow up. It was time to walk the walk that I had seemingly done in all other aspects of my life.

Stopping cold turkey is not easy. Going from 30 beers a week to 0 is not a walk in the park by any means. It isn’t helped by the fact that I went on tour just a few months after deciding to stop drinking. But that was the challenge. I put myself into the very environments where I drank the most and went head on with my self-discipline. When times got tough, I talked to the closest people in my life if I needed to.

I moved to L.A. 8 months after quitting drinking. In one way, it was a blessing. I was now out of the city where I drank so much and where life was so social. Now I was in a city where I knew fewer people, a comedy scene that was too big to be so social, and a city where plenty of people are going to AA meetings and in recovery. Of course, a move brings about a bunch of other issues that could trigger my drinking again including loneliness and detachment. There were many nights I definitely thought about drinking but I didn’t do it.

When things were at their lowest on two occasions, I went to AA meetings in L.A. I didn’t stop drinking with AA but I will say that when you feel like you have nothing else it’s a valuable place to go to. It provided me with perspective. Here I was doing well enough sitting next to a woman crying because her most recent drunken arrest would likely get her deported, a guy praising Jesus, or a guy who clearly either currently had or once had ties to a gang. Alcoholism and addiction know no divisions in humanity, race, class, etc.

I was already going to therapy when I came to the realization that I needed to stop drinking. But it wasn’t until L.A. after a particularly terrible, lonely night that I knew I had to talk to my doctor about getting medication. To give some context, I remember a time being so drunk and telling my friend I felt like pouring gasoline on myself and setting myself on fire. Needless to say, my friend was more concerned than finding any kind of humor or sense to that statement. Those kinds of ideas still creeped in even without alcohol. So, there was an issue with my mind, and if I really wanted to address it, I had to at least try it after decades of avoiding it to see if it could work for me.

My therapist ended up breaking up with me. Somehow I could keep a long-distance relationship going with my partner but I couldn’t with my therapist. It was for the best, though. She helped me to get to a better place and then it just felt repetitive. The anti-depressant has calmed me in a way that I hadn’t remotely felt before with how my mind functioned. It’s not perfect but it’s a whole lot better. I decided to replace alcohol and focus more on hobbies. I got a gym membership and finally started lifting weights regularly. I focused on running and signing up for races. I started reading more again. I cared more about educating myself than wasting my time away in bars and with booze. The whole reason for doing my “How To” videos was to combine that learning experience along with my creativity.

Now if I look back at those rankings, my partner and my family are on the same level because my partner is my family. We addressed our issues with alcohol, deal with our mental health together on a daily basis, and matured into an actual loving relationship. Comedy and my job are on the same level to me. I’m not so concerned with comedy becoming my full-time job because I’m happy with how my life is and the balance of having both of these jobs that I enjoy and do well in. And, obviously, alcohol is rightfully gone and far away, never to be near such a countdown ever again.

I’ve written before about the author A. Alvarez and his book, The Savage God. In it, he talks about how his suicide attempt felt like a death in his life. Then, he emerged from it as a new and better person. I look at life that way as well. I’ve had a series of deaths with who I am. I’ve emerged from those deaths better. On April 25, 2015, the Sumukh Torgalkar that many had known since he turned 21 had died. I wasn’t this same man anymore. I don’t know that person anymore. Sometimes I can look back on him and he can make me laugh. Sometimes I look back on him and he embarrasses me. I suppose that’s how life works. But, giving up drinking alcohol allowed me to no longer hide behind myself. It allowed me to find more of the real me.

Even to this day, sometimes people write blog posts or Facebook posts or Instagram posts after giving up drinking after 1 week or 1 month or whatever and they bask in the glory of how great they feel. Then, of course, they return back to drinking. I have no concept of what they learned. I don’t know that it really matters. I was pretty sensitive to that. I wrote my first post after 15 months of not drinking. I felt comfortable at that point with myself and that I wouldn’t slip back to drinking again. Still, it was frightening. I’d never opened up in that way, so publicly and identifying the greatest weakness of my life.

Now, after 5 years, I’m writing another essay on giving up drinking. But, unless I write a book, I don’t anticipate I’ll revisit writing about this specific topic again. I have no desire to drink again. Watching people take shots grosses me out. Seeing people drunk just brings back flashes of sadness more than it does good times. I don’t have any interest in slipping back because life has improved so drastically simply because I actually faced off against myself head on rather than avoiding it.

In retrospect, a lot of my 20s was spent in dark bars pounding beers. It seemed fun because I was young and I was doing comedy and that’s what that kind of lifestyle entails. But there’s a lot more to life than that. Only removing myself entirely from alcohol allowed me to find that. The old me’s dead and gone and has found so many other things in life are much more fulfilling.

As any parent of young children can probably appreciate, these days, going on a date is more of a ten-step process:

Decide to actually go on a date and have enough time to ask the other person if they want to go

Call 3-5 people until you finally find a babysitter

On day of date, pre-make food for whichever meal you’ll be missing at home so the kids are well fed (I don’t do this anymore since I found this shortcut)

If the date is at night, also pre-bathe children so the babysitter doesn’t have to

Remind kids to clean rooms, do chores, etc.

Find something to wear … if you’re an overachiever, maybe even put on makeup

Make list of all instructions and emergency contacts for babysitter

Finally make it out the door to go on the date

Almost fall asleep during dinner/movie/etc. because you have small children and aren’t used to staying awake after 9:30 PM

Come home to find all the kids are still awake, and drive babysitter home

This of course isn’t to say that it isn’t worth it to get out kid-free once in a while, but if staying in for a date is more practical, the good news is there are still ways to make it special (and without doing the same old thing).

Date Cost: Then vs. Now

The cost to go on a date has changed a lot too over the years!

It used to cost $0-$10 to go out with my husband because we would go for a walk or hike, or to a free event at a local outdoor theater. If we were really splurging, we would go to a bar for drinks, dinner, and a movie.

Now, a babysitter usually costs at least $40+ for an evening, a nice-ish dinner is easily $50+, and if we went to a movie that is another $22. $112 for a basic dinner and a movie seems like a lot, especially since it can be hard to find healthy, real food options and my husband prefers to watch movies at home.

Fun Date Ideas (At Home or Out!)

We decided long ago that we would make weekly date nights a priority, but also that many of these date nights would happen at home after the kids were in bed (cheaper, easier, and not a problem if we fall asleep by 10 PM).

Over the years, I’ve developed a list of some of our favorite at-home date ideas. We’ve found that even if we are just spending uninterrupted time together after the kids go to bed but are intentionally not on our phones or laptops, we have a great time and can rekindle some of that fun, quality time spontaneity and romance of our early dating and married years.

1. Massage (My Favorite)

The whole lots-of-babies-in-8-years has made me a big fan of getting a massage. Pregnancy, nursing, and now carrying around toddlers are a big demand on the body and every mom could use a good massage. Unfortunately, a good 60-minute massage can cost at least $80 in most locations.

While there are some great massage devices to use at home (this is my favorite), a much more romantic way is to try an at-home massage course.

This Melt Massage for Couples course is taught by a husband and wife team in a really easy-to-learn format. It’s the gift that keeps on giving, now that we both actually know how to give a good massage!

2. Sports (His Favorite)

You might think my husband would have to con me into this one, but watching a sporting event is one date night we both enjoy equally. We share favorite baseball and football teams and have weekly dates to watch games.

For big anniversaries or birthdays, I’ll try to work out getting actual tickets to a game so we can go together.

3. Chess

If you don’t already have a chessboard and set, you can pick up an inexpensive one and learn to play together. It’s fun and great for your mind, and also a great game to teach your kids!

4. Rekindle the Fire (Literally)

We built a fire pit in our backyard and some of our favorite at-home dates involve sitting by the fire, sipping wine, and just talking. Lights aren’t just for Christmas … hang a string or make these homemade tiki-torches to create a romantic and cozy backyard atmosphere.

5. Documentary Date

We enjoy watching documentaries together and often this leads to good conversation about a controversial topic. Some great documentaries that are available on Netflix or Amazon to stream online are:

7. Go for a Hike

These require a babysitter or leaving home unless you happen to live on a lot of land, but spending time outdoors and disconnected from technology is a great way to reconnect. Look up local parks and try a new spot you haven’t explored!

8. Watch a New Show

Not a groundbreaking date idea, but still relaxing and cheap! We don’t watch much TV, but over the years there have been a few series that we’ve really enjoyed and that gave us an excuse for regular date nights at home. We definitely pair this idea with a nice glass of our favorite wine.

9. Cook Together

Another activity that I probably enjoy more than my husband does, but cooking together can be a lot of fun, especially when trying new recipes (I might know where you can find some…) or cuisines. Pick a recipe to make together. If you have the time, pick a movie that corresponds to the cuisines and enjoy dinner and a movie. Make an Italian meal and watch an Italian movie together, or try your hand at sushi-making and watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

10. Breakfast Date

Dinner is the typical date meal, but no need to leave out the others! Breakfast is a healthier (and cheaper) meal to eat out. Head to a diner or local restaurant for an early morning date, and reserve the rest of the day for some good couple time. It can also be easier to get babysitters on a Saturday morning or let your kids play at a friend’s house.

11. Embark on an Adventure

This is my husband’s favorite type of date, and it fits well with our decision to stick to experiences instead of material gifts. I’ve enjoyed getting out of my comfort zone on some of our more adventurous dates. One memorable year we went scuba diving, but there are tons of possibilities! Visit an indoor rock climbing gym, go kayaking (another one of ours), race go-karts, try ice skating (not my favorite!), or if you are really brave … try karaoke!

12. Around the World at Home

This is a recurring date theme for us. Going out can be difficult with little ones, so plan a fun date themed around ethnic foods and enjoy it at home once the kids are in bed. Make your own sushi and eat on the floor. Make healthy Mexican food and watch a movie in Spanish. Make fondue and eat by candlelight. Whatever you choose, set the mood with music and decorations to make it fun! Even if you don’t go for ethnic foods, enjoy a late-night date at home and cook for each other! This is also a budget-friendly way to keep the romance alive.

13. Go Camping

This certainly isn’t for everyone, but it usually promises to be a bonding experience and is really healthy for you too. Always fun as a family, but if you can sneak away for a night, go camping as a couple. The alone time around the campfire will give you a chance to really catch up, and the potential for unforeseen circumstances (wild animals, rain, etc.) makes it an adventure.

14. Volunteer

This is a great way to get closer as a couple. Once we tried it, I wished we’d started right away as a newly married couple. Focus on a cause you both believe in and volunteer together. This is something great to do with kids too. Volunteer at a soup kitchen, raise money for a cause, or pick a service project at your church. It might make you grateful for what you have and will certainly be some quality time with your love! Another advantage … spreading the love doesn’t cost a thing!

15. Visit a Local Attraction

We often forget about the things that others come to our town to see. Go to a play at the community theater or check out the comedy club. Find an arboretum or botanical garden and walk around. Hit the batting cages or mini golf or even just browse the bookstore together and talk over a cup of coffee. If it is in season, visit an orchard or pick-your-own farm or take a tour of a local brewery or vineyard.

16. Exercise or Do an Activity Together

Exercise can be fun as a couple! Pick a new sport to learn: tennis, racquetball, basketball, or swimming… just pick something you enjoy. For an activity, go miniature golfing, paint pottery together, take dance or painting lessons, or go bike riding or canoeing. These are often the best times to talk and you get the chance to develop a new hobby or skill.

17. Paint Each Other’s Portrait

Feel a little funny staring into each other’s eyes? Painting a portrait is the perfect excuse! Reconnect in an unusual way by reviving or learning a new skill. Lots of laughs will be had, I promise! It’s ok to just have fun with it, but I also recommend an online class from Udemy if you really want to learn some new skills.

18. Just Do Nothing!

Seriously … all parents know it’s harder than it sounds! Once the kids are in bed (and repeatedly threatened asked to return to bed), choose to de-stress by ignoring everything else that needs to be done. (Ignore electronics, too… hide them if you have to!)

Dim the lights, light some beeswax candles, turn on some relaxing music, and just hang out together. Talk, sleep, cuddle, laugh… just like the old days!

Most Importantly: Turn Date Ideas into Reality

Making time to spend as a couple can be much more challenging than it should be, especially with kids. Make the decision to make your relationship a priority. Take the time to brainstorm new date ideas and make them happen… no need to wait for a time like Valentine’s Day to have an excuse to spend time together!

The 13th day

I know that you slept good last night,

Because I couldn't close my eyes if my life depended on it.

From everyone I know, including you, have told me not to cry over you that you're not worth it.

I guess I just can't relate.

Because to me you were worth it. Still are honestly.

Inside and out I thank you for always showing me how to be considerate and kind.

I holy spirit Everytime an ambulance passes,

I physically turn around when I instantly see TY beanie babies,

The thought of seeing one you might love breaks my heart.

I honestly think you hated them but loved them because of me.

I wear your favorite sweater I stole to bed every single night.

Every day I hope to run into you,

I leave my social media public, because I know you log on just to see how I'm doing even though you won't try talking to me.

But if your mind and heart is with me,

Why are we strangers again?

You were the only one I've pictured a family with,

And now I don't want one at all.

I cry randomly, for no reason.

Except that sometimes my heart remembers something my mind doesn't.

And i think it's a time with you.

Moving will change my surroundings but it'll never change that my heart belomhs to you.

I was so sure with you, so sure that now I'm not sure what 'sure' even is anymore.

I bet you're happy with him.

And I'm happy you are.

I pray for you to this day, your family, your brother's.

Pray that you'll follow your dreams, your heart and not the attention things you do gets you.

That it could be the part 2 we've been waiting to complete.

But it feels impossible.

Because I don't know if you ever really can love me.

Comfortably.

I wish one day your heart decides.

You will forever be burned into my mind, my body and my soul. Most importantly, my heart.

In the past 13 days:

I've left notes for random people to brighten up their day,

I've tried complimenting people on their makeup - because it's hard work,

I've made 0 excuses to get out of doing anything and kept going,

I've took the time to listen and want to understand even if it seems like a simple fix,

Been around my family more often,

Put my pride aside and got off the Internet,

Not said anything at all, and just let be whatever it is,

To smile even with tears dripping down my cheeks,

To sleep more often,

All because you taught me it's the right things to do. That are best for me.

If you only knew that no matter how many good deed or thoughtless acts of kindness I complete daily, doesn't compare to the pain I feel for treating you so terribly, then you'd know I spend my days drugging myself and drinking. Those long nights I cry alone, repeating to myself "please God just take this hurt away from me, please God I don't want to hurt anymore, I hope she and everyone else forgets how terrible I am, and how terrible I was to them. I don't deserve an easy life or a happy one. I just don't want the pain anymore." while piercing the same sharpened blade into my skin night after night.

I know you wouldn't approve of my wreckless and dangerous behavior.

The only thing that ever gets me to sleep every night is the day you saw my leg the first time and you laid on your bed and told me it's okay if I sleep, because you had to clean. As I was silently crying on your bed you laid next to me and held me. Told me how stupid I was for doing that to myself. Never to do it again.

But I can't stop doing it.

It's the only way I can feel you hold me again, In a way I knew you in that moment, you truly cares about me and my well being. You put me first that moment. That's all I honestly ever wanted.

Me, my razor, my Halloween socks and that purple flower sweatshirt are going to see alot of nights together for a very long time.

Alot of people say "oh you're just being dramatic, you'll get over her like the rest of your ex's and move on and forget about her and how sad it made you. You'll find new love and you'll get over her."

Truth is, nobody can feel what I do. I've thought about the pros and cons. My happiness vs my sadness.

My happiness, was taken from me when I lost her. 70% of me will always hold this sadness within.

And this sadness-

This sadness will last forever.
