being lactose intolerant & being allergic to nuts is literally hell when trying to find things for cooking. i try to have dairy but i wind up having stomach issues for like, days. so i really need to try and pull away from dairies.
then im trying to eat better and it's so expensive. like i got ingredients for pasta salad which can make 2 nights worth. but it cost almost $20 for a few ingredients e_e
why does it have to be so difficult to eat better.

6/3/24
11:24 p.m
I just ate a chicken sandwich. It was so good. I want to go get a chicken tomorrow but I'll wait until Wednesday cause I got my testosterone shot and therapy at 7 p.m. I'll be losing a lot of hardcore nuketown time Wednesday no matter what.
Whereas tomorrow I have virtually nothing to do but play nuketown. I'm just going to look forward to veggies burgers and vegan bacon cause it's bomb af. I really love how the vegan bacon compliments the cheese and all the veggies in the burger.
Beyond that i realize my last cheat day was the 13th of May. I'm totally alloted a cheat day every like 2-3 weeks. Technically based off of online results once a week is okay but I'm super serious about my diet. I've never dieted until now and I'm astounded at how well it works having a caloric deficiency. I can't wait until I can see how skinny I get and how muscular I get once I join the gym.
Imma have Simulate nugs and smiley fries tomorrow or wednesday. I may need to get smiley fries after this next Cheat day. I also am going to cheat a little further and eat some corn nuts. My mother bought them for me post diet and I don't want them to go bad. I have thrown out a lot of food. A lot. A lot.
But I basically eat what I buy now, I'm talking older food cause my diet is very planned. I may enjoy some chocolate on my Cheat day. My mom got me a valentine day heart chocolate thing. Idk I got to look at expirations dates. I'd like to not throw everything out that isn't on my diet. I may do chocolate and the smiley fries. And do corn nuts on my next Cheat day.
All I know is I'm fucking excited for smiley fries. It's funny though that when you start dieting, yea you want to Cheat and then you do.. and it's like this food makes me feel gross.... like last time I had smiley fries I got some acid reflux. I haven't had that in ages. So as much as I look forward to it, I actually really like the food I'm eating and find it to be tasty.
I do miss chocolate, French fries and cheese burgers. I do know if I went to Wendy's I'd enjoy it but I'd feel like shit after. Even if I made my own cheese burgers. When I eventually cheat and get a cheese burger I'm getting a fucking baconator. The very best.
Anyways, I'm about to brush my teeth and keep watching ink master. I just tried my new white mulberries cause of the return policy of a month. I can't return the others, not that I would. They seem to be fine but they don't taste as good.
Also as for bloodwork, wondering if I'm hyper or hypo or normal. I'm pooping normal. I'd say my tempature is normal, I didn't sweat today in sweat pants and a t shirt when I went to cvs. I would have if I was hyper.. I mean I'm hungry every 4-6 hours. That seems very normal to me.
When I was Hypo I fell asleep a lot easier. I wouldn't say I'm sleeping better. It was the only good thing about being hypo... and I haven't noticed it.
My heart rate is very normal when I check it too. So as for right now I'm prob doing my bloodwork on the 14th. Nothing I'm experiencing is pointing toward hyper or hypo. So that's cool. Although I'd like to go into remission...
My hallucination as I sit here is like chanting happy birthday and i have a birthday present.. it's really fucking driving me up a wall.. it sounds off. Sorta in a good way. I took my white mulberries almost a hour ago.. maybe it's changing it? Idk. All I know is I got to drown this annoying POS that makes me wants to kill myself everyday out before I do end my life.
I'm still worried about xanax... and I'm hoping Maybe one day this hallucination stops... still waiting on Kristen....

Acana vs Royal Canin
https://www.centralparkpaws.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/417WUUX2vAL.jpg When it comes to my dog, I don’t think there will ever be a point where I feel like I’ve learned everything I can to help her.
As her advocate, I feel responsible to know as much as possible about what’s going on with her life.
Her diet is a major part of her routine, so I like to keep up on all the options that are at her disposal. Especially when it comes to food brands.
Acana and Royal Canin are two of the most popular dog food brands, but I’ve never bought them myself.
I did some research to find out what people love about these foods and if they could be a good fit for Maggie.
Here’s everything I learned.
Acana’s Company History
Acana was started by a family who wanted to make great dog food while also supporting the local economy.
In order to do this, they created a mission statement with two goals[1]:
They would only ever make food biologically appropriate for dogs.
Their ingredients would only ever be regionally sourced.
I love the idea of fine tuning dog food to match what dogs would eat if they were out in the wild.
They’re still programmed for that kind of food, even if you’ve got a dog like mine who is a proud couch potato.
Acana focuses on providing this by mixing proteins in every bag or can of food[2], so dogs get the best nutrition possible without breaking the bank.
Best Sellers
Like any other major dog food brand, Acana has a variety of foods for consumers to choose from, but they still have a few best sellers:
Acana Wild Atlantic Dry Dog Food
Acana Grasslands Dry Dog Food
Acana Meadowland Dry Dog Food
Each food blend is named for the region where your dog would find the ingredients if they were out in the wild, which I think is pretty cool.
Royal Canin’s Company History
Royal Canin’s first nutritional dog food blend was born in 1968, based on the belief that if a dog ate the right food, it would transform their entire health[3].
By 1974, they sold dog food internationally, and they’ve been trusted by dog owners and breeders ever since.
Best Sellers
In order to claim their own space in the kibble world, Royal Canin separates their food blends by age and breed.
You can get food specifically tailored to your dog’s genetic makeup according to their breed, but they have a few best sellers that work with general dogs:
Large Adult 5+ Dry Dog Food
Large Aging 8+ Dry Dog Food
Adult Canned in Gel Dog Food
I like that there are so many foods to choose from, and that you can get food according to your dog’s breed.
That’s something I haven’t seen before, so it definitely rivals Acana’s regional ingredient approach.
Do you have a dog with urinary problems? We reviewed Royal Canin’s Urinary Diet food!
Recalls
With their attention to detail when it comes to their ingredients, it seems like Acana has tapped into a healthy business model.
They’ve never had any recalls[4], so it’s safe to bet that their food will be consistently good for your dog.
Their only issue is that they had a class-action lawsuit filed against them in 2018, but it ended up being dismissed because the judge found that the data at hand regarding toxins was misinterpreted[5].
Melamine: Not for dog food!
The food had always been safe for dogs to eat.
On the other hand, Royal Canin has had three recalls[6] — one in 2006 and two in 2007.
The first recall in 2006 was caused by too much Vitamin D3 in special diet foods.
The two 2007 recalls were both caused by melamine being in many variations of their dog and cat food.
Melamine is a chemical that’s commonly used to make dishware[7], but when it’s put in acidic solutions, like stomach acid, it’s easily absorbed and turns toxic[8].
Having two recalls for the same reason does make me pause and wonder how Royal Canin let that happen.
Although it’s been twelve years, I can’t imagine how a double mistake like that could happen.
What’s Important When Choosing a Dog Food?
Before I ever get Maggie a new brand of dog food, I make sure to look for these key factors.
Ingredients
I want the ingredients in my dog’s food to be recognizable, nutritious, and safe, and I think all dog owners feel the same way.
The more preservatives and chemicals that appear in an ingredient list, the less likely I am to buy that food.
Price
The price is also something to consider for your long-term financial wellbeing.
I restock Maggie’s 25 pound food bags once every six weeks.
Dog owners with bigger dogs should also be wary of how often they’ll be buying from the food brand, as well as any owner on a budget.
Availability
Don’t get accidentally stuck with a dog food brand you can only buy at your vet’s office or in the next town over.
Double check any food that interests you to see if you can buy it locally or have it shipped to your house for convenience.
Taste
Maggie gets to experiment more often with different flavors of treats, since they’re so little and have a very low chance of impacting her digestion.
Based on what treats she likes, I gauge her food blends off her preferences.
You can also research each brand to find out what other owners are reporting back.
Do their dogs like it?
That’s a great way to find out if a quality bag of food translates into food that tastes good.
Brand Reliability
Always look at the history of a brand to see how reliable they are.
If they’ve had multiple recalls, do you trust them to never have those problems again? How proactively did they react to the recalls or lawsuits?
I want to buy from a brand that can admit they made a mistake and then prevent it from reoccurring.
Comparison of Acana vs Royal Canin
So how do these two dog food brands compare? Let’s break things down into our most important factors.
Ingredients
  Winner: Acana
Acana began their brand long ago, but they continue to use only real ingredients.
Their Ranchlands mix, which is one of their most popular foods, has all recognizable ingredients[9].
That makes me feel more in control of what Maggie’s actually eating when I pour food into her bowl.
Royal Canin’s best seller, the Adult 5+ Dry Dog Food bag, only has four foods that I can recognize out of 51 ingredients.
Their first ingredient is “chicken by-product meal,” which makes me wonder why they won’t just use real chicken.
I’d pick Acana for their ingredients before letting Maggie eat whatever by-product meal is.
Price/Value
  Winner: Royal Canin
The flipside to valuing better ingredients is that the food will get more expensive than other options.
Acana comes out to average about over two dollars and fifty cents per pound, which means Maggie’s usual 25 pound bag would cost almost $67 before paying for shipping or local taxes.
Royal Canin is slightly less expensive than Acana, because most of their food is made up of those cheaper ingredients that aren’t fresh.
Still, it’s reported that the cost of fresh food like raw meat, veggies, or even wet food will continue to soar[10]. So you’re probably winning either way if you go with dry kibble.
Personally, I would hunt around on the internet to find if Acana is available at different prices and then make my decision from there.
What I currently spend on Maggie is about $50 per bag, so I could take the jump in price if there were discounts or coupons applied.
Availability
  Winner: Royal Canin
Neither of these brands sell their food directly from their websites, but they do each have a store locator that you can use to find the closest retailer near you.
That being said, you can find them for sale at other online stores, so you should check to see if the places that have the best prices also deliver to your area.
Acana loses here because it’s available on Amazon, not Chewy.
Royal Canin, on the other hand, can be found on both Amazon and Chewy.
Taste
  Winner: Acana
Maggie’s never tried either of these brands before, so I had to read about what other customers have reported.
Acana is a bit complicated with specific tastes, since every bag of food has a blend of regional proteins.
There’s no beef or chicken label to go by, but it seems that customers report to have happy dogs if Acana ends up in their food bowls.
Royal Canin has mixed reviews.
Some dog owners have dogs who love the food, while others see their dogs have bad reactions to it, like diarrhea and vomiting.
If this is the brand you’re more interested in, it’d be smart to introduce it slowly to your dog’s diet and be aware that if these symptoms appear, you should switch food blends immediately.
Based on the taste reviews, I think Acana seems like the obvious choice. Their whole, natural ingredients are easier for dogs to digest and more nutritious, which ends up in food that tastes great.
Brand Reliability
  Winner: Acana
I trust a brand with no recalls over any other brand, so while I believe Royal Canin has solved the issues that led to their three recalls, I’d trust Acana first.
I like that they know their food production process inside and out, so I wouldn’t worry about watching the news to see if a recall happened with them.
Overall
  Winner: Acana
The winner for me is Acana, although I do wish their prices were a bit lower.
It all depends where you buy it from, and thankfully, there are a lot of options online.
Conclusion
Weigh all these factors for yourself when you decide which dog food brand to get for your dog, and always be aware of any changes in their health after introducing them to new food.

New Year, New Me
We’ve all heard that one before, amiright? Some of us have even said it. If you’re like me, you may have gone previous years feeling annoyed at that darling little phrase. Why even is that? I guess that’s a question I can only answer for myself – I can’t speak for us all. Maybe it’s because I’ve had many resolutions in past years only to let myself down by January 2nd. Maybe there’s some jealousy toward the people who were successful with their resolutions from last New Year and I knew they’d be successful once again with the new resolution they’ve proudly posted all over Facebook for themselves. Maybe I get irritated at the cliché of it all. Maybe it’s a little bit of all of those things, but the one thing they DO have in common? Those “reasons,” if we can even call them that – I see them more as excuses now – they’re all on me. I have no one to blame but myself for feeling any of those ways. Typing them out makes me feel even more petty and stupid, because admitting those things makes me seem like a terrible person. Perhaps you’re reading this now and can resonate with everything I’ve just said. If that’s the case, then I have good news for you: This year is different. For me. For you. For us.
What makes this year different? This New Years Eve, for the first time in my life, I proudly proclaimed new year, new me. Did I post it all over Facebook for the world to see? No, but I also didn’t cringe at every post that I saw about how great 2018 was and how much better 2019 was going to be. Instead, I welcomed those posts with open arms. Seeing everyone uplifted and positive filled me with joy and made my heart happy. What inspired this change in me going into 2019, I can’t quite say; maybe there’s a certain maturity that comes with reaching the ripe old age of 24. But no matter what the cause, this is a change for the better that I can feel good about.
(Before I get too ahead of myself, it’s entirely possible that my newfound positivity and burst of energy is riding on the high spectrum of the depression wave that I tend to ride. I’m telling myself that that is okay – I am going to ride it for as long as possible and if there’s a crash, I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. That’s the end of this disclaimer. Thanks for letting me be honest with you.)
If you’ve read this far into my rambling of thoughts, I know you’re probably thinking – “well, did you make a new year’s resolution or not?” In a way, I guess I did. And if you didn’t, you can too; it’s not too late. I’ll even let you steal mine. Are you ready?
In 2019, I’m choosing to be happy. For someone who ‘hated’ the cliché of it all, that seems a little hypocritical, don’t you think? That’s ok, too. I’m embracing the cliché. Say it one more time with me to really drive it home: In 2019, I’m choosing to be happy.
Of course that’s easier said than done. Most things in life are. But I have made a very conscious decision to live this year for myself. I’m terrible at doing things for myself – maybe you can relate to that too. The depression wave I mentioned earlier? That comes with high and low tides of severe anxiety, as well. I am terrible at decision-making. I am terrible at even the mere thought of disappointing other people in my life. I am terrible at putting myself first. I live in a constant state of worrying what other people will think of my actions, my lifestyle, and me as a person in general. Sound familiar? I hope not. But if it does, welcome to 2019: the year of being honest with ourselves. The year that we stop envisioning the people we would like to be – 2019 is the year that we become that person for ourselves. Don’t you think we owe ourselves that much?
So let’s talk about what’s making this year different for me.
 I’ve started this blog.
This is a huge step for me. I actually ~made~ this blog months ago with the intention of starting to post things that probably nobody actually cares about. The idea of someone actually reading this extensive word-vomit that I’ve just plucked from the ramblings in my brain is terrifying. I suppose that might be kind of the point; in a way, I’m killing two birds with one stone. Is there not a quote somewhere in the universe that says, “If it scares you, it’s probably worth doing”? I think that’s a thing, and this definitely scares me. On the flip side, word-vomiting this all out helps to make sense of the thoughts flying through my head. I have to give myself props for the balance of it all. While it’d be cool if someone did read this and maybe even took something away from it, this blog is largely for myself and I have made the decision to try and post one blog weekly. That shouldn’t be too difficult, right? Stay tuned.
 I bought a fancy planner.
Yes, I know, lots of people buy planners. Some people use them, some people don’t. I absolutely fall into the category of people who buy fancy planners and do not use them. But what’s our new motto? This year is different. I’ve already sat down and filled my January section with all of my appointments, important birthdays, and even my meal prep for the entire month. Which brings me to the next item on the list…
 I’m eating clean.
This is something I yo-yo with more than I’d like to admit over the course of the year. Sometimes I have stretches where I am super good about it, and then there are other (much longer) stretches where I eat like an asshole on the regular. I am by no means going to go crazy and plunge my body into ketosis or become vegan overnight [zero hate for the awesome people who live those valid lifestyles], but I am going to be much more conscious of the way I treat my body. That means things like getting all of my veggies in during the day, drinking plenty of water (but not too much, because that is a ~thing~ I struggle with – do not judge me), and of course…
 I’m taking my fitness seriously.
I love going to the gym. Honestly, I’m not just saying that. But much like my eating habits, I’m just not very consistent. Chalk it up to laziness or…well, no, laziness is pretty much the only thing I can think to blame it on. Regardless, I have been going to the gym since my high school years. This year, however, I am making it a point to be consistent. Like I said earlier, I’m being very self-aware in the way that I treat my body these days and, let’s just be truthful here, my body is overwhelmingly happier when I exercise. That’s a simple fact that some of us tend to blissfully ignore or lie to ourselves about. But c’mon – exercise releases endorphins, endorphins make you feel happy, and in 2019 we’re choosing to be happy. Remember?
There you have it. Maybe I didn’t post my resolution or my goals to Facebook for family and friends to see, but I did just lay them all out for you here. (Maybe not all of them, I’m sure more small goals will pop up. It is only January 1st, after all.) Getting back to the idea of this whole blogging thing – if you’ve made it this far, I truly thank you. I thought writing this would be difficult, and instead the words just kept flowing until here we are, so many words later. I haven’t yet decided what the focus of my blog posts will be about. Truthfully, I can’t promise that they will follow any sort of theme. But I’ll tell you what, I will make it a point to keep you updated on this resolution of mine throughout the year. I did say that I’d like to post at least once a week, though, so I better start thinking up more topics pretty quickly. I’ll come up with something else that probably nobody actually cares about, I promise.
One more time before I wrap this up:
In 2019, we are choosing to be happy.
Don’t forget it. Write it on your bathroom mirror or tape it to the front of your fridge. If we say it enough, maybe we can at least trick ourselves into believing it.
  Talk to you soon.

Yay Toilet paper.
So i finally got paid this week.. rushed to the atm to get the money to pay rent and then we all went to the supermarket and bought the staples we need for food and toilet paper :D. I feel like i still am having to live extremely tight. As i am not going to be working in July but still need to pay rent i am trying to put a portion away so i can still pay my part. It is hard to not spend it. I have a food budget and i went over a little this week but we still didn’t have enough to buy milk. I have to just go... well ... that is up to Silvia or Aura to find the money... i cannot spend all my money and then have nothing for July. It is hard because we don’t have heaps of vegetables in our diets and that is bought basically daily from the local market around the corner.  That is one thing i am looking forward to when i get home... just massive salad sandwiches.... and haystacks and even some green juices lol.
I bought some dodgey cheap scales just to weigh myself and kept myself in check. Not that i can afford any more to buy junk food.. but just to keep myself motivated. They are so dodgey though. Depending on if i lean slightly forward or backwards. Its hard to tell between when i left home and now how much weight i have really lost because all scales are slightly different. But i came here at like 95kg and i weighed the lightest at 89.5kg.. so i’ve lost bit. Hoping to get back down to 80 or just below before i head home. But the other day i dont know what i did ... the scales said 100.1... i nearly smashed them lol. So rude. But pretty much every time i step on the scales the number is different so i just kinda do it like 5 times and get an average lol. * Shrug.  One main reason i want to lose weight is that i have a brand new pair of jeans i bought like... 3 years ago.. cause i bought a new pair when i got back from New zealand and i was like well i might as well buy a size smaller cause i am gonna lose weight ( classic idiot thought). I didn’t lose weight and they still brand new. But i knew when i was packing to come here that i would lose weight as is normal when i travel. My current jeans are fading a lot and i wear the same black jeans to work everyday so i really want to wear my news ones but i think i will need to get to to like 84 / 83 kgs to wear them. My New school is way more fancy so i want to wear the new ones when i start there in August... so i have 2 months to get into them lol. Cheaper to lose weight then to buy new pants.. so i shall do my best.
Oh this week i also went to my new school to meet with the teacher and start helping in the class. And ohhh my gooodness... what a breathe of fresh air. The school is massive and beautiful. The classrooms are double the size of my current classrooms in Giron (if not bigger) and there are max 24 students in the class. And... the class is SILENT. They only talk one and a time.. they raise their hand to talk and they work quietly at their desks. It is a beautiful thing. The Primary school principal was just like... “ I really want you to love it here” and i was like.. “ There is no doubt of that happening”. As of right now my standards are so low. If the school has toilet paper and working internet... it is amazing. Also, this school has a cafeteria and teachers can eat free.. its like a buffet. HOW EXCITING!!! she said they have lots of salads so i can get my fresh veggie hit there :D. I feel like working there next semester will be an absolute dream. 21 more school days at Giron and I am free of the public system and on to better things. Time goes quickly .. yet slowly which is a weird concept. I have already been here 4 months 8 more months to go o__O. She’ll be right. I have plenty of time to plan my re entry back into Australia and take full advantages of all the opportunities that beautiful country has to offer me.

Thank you so much @headbuttingunicorn :D :D :D
I’m not 100% sure where my little guys originally came from but odds are good it was a feeder tank. The LFS if I’m being optimistic but probably like Petsmart. I rescued them from a bowl after about a week and a half dying in the lobby of my apartment building, they were definitely pretty sorry looking then :/
Tumblr media
For the last year and a half or so the three survivors lived in this 50 g
Tumblr media
Which technically could have sustained them for most of their lives (I think even by bare minimum standards a 65 would probably be necessary eventually for three fish), but it has weird dimensions (15x36x20″) and honestly?? They were just outgrowing it. They’re over 6 inches now at just a little over two years old. But I’ll talk about their care in here anyway because that’s where they’ve done most of their growing and living the majority of their life.
LOTS of filtration. I've had two Aquaclear 70s on this tank the whole time it’s been up, and for the last 4 months or so, a SunSun HW-304B canister as well. The AC’s are 300 gph (gallons per hour) each, and the SunSun is hOLY SHIT 525 gph oh my god how have I not noticed that.
(Weird story with that one??? I thought I ordered the 265 gph model, found I’d accidentally ordered the 370 gph model, and when the box arrived they had sent me this one which is oh my gooooodddddd 525 wat)
So I had around 600 (and then 1100 whooopps that’s maybe a little too much) total turnover per hour, or about 12x the volume of the tank. With goldfish I always recommend at least 10x, minimum. It really makes such a difference. Even if your water tests come up clear on water change day, the quicker you’re getting the ammonia and nitrite processed out of the water, the less stress the fish’s systems are under in the long run.
They're not expensive either! The Aquaclears are about $45 each online, and the canister is similar. Although sunsun being an Asian company their prices fluctuate a bit.
I have a shit ton of pothos on my tank too, for nitrate munching purposes since my water comes out of the tap already at 10-20 ppm. I.... think it’s going to eat me someday o_O this is it with like four feet of trimming at least.
Tumblr media
And even with all that, water changes! I’ll admit I wasn’t always solid on my w/c schedule, my health is iffy at best and running on a 10 day schedule happened fairly often, although I DO NOT recommend that. To make up for it, I almost always do 60-90% changes. Contrary to popular belief, large water changes are not harmful to your fish or your cycle as long as you match the pH and temperature of the fresh water going in. I refill in chunks over the course of an hour or so to avoid shocking them, they pout during the process but as soon as I restart the filters they’re back to normal.
I recently, and I mean recently, as in last week, upgraded to a FRICKIN’ ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY GALLON TANK??? OMFUCKINGFUCK LOOK
Tumblr media
I LOVE IT SO MUCH AND SO DO THEY :D
Holy shit I’ve been fighting with the manufacturers over this thing for wEEKS IT’S FINALLY HERE. 72″x24″x20″ which is such a good shape for goldfish, much better than the standard 150 which is taller and thinner. Ahhh they’re so happy they just go nyoooooom nyooom from one end to the other, and I can add more friends!! Right now I have Remy, Lilac, Ludi, and little Ametrine in there. Plus Sumi in quarantine, but she’s really sick all of a sudden which is why this post took longer than I meant it too, sorry :( I don’t know what happened she just dropsied out of nowhere the other night. She was due to join the others in a week or two, but if she pulls through she’s getting an extended QT now to be sure she’s really healthy
And a skinny lil blind dude I picked up not long ago who may or may not live by himself depending on if I think he can hold his own with the others or not? He’s a spunky cutie but Very Tiny.
Anyway the tank is kind of a mess cause I just chucked every piece of spare decor I have in there to give them something to do, but I have some nice driftwood and just bought a ton of anubias and I’m gonna try actual planted this time!!!
Food food yum yum :) Variety is the spice of life. This pic is from a while ago, I’ve added more to this now probably
Tumblr media
I use the Omega One and Thera A as daily staples, rotated with smatterings of the other pellets, as well as Repashy Soilent Green and some of my own homemade gel foods. I really wanna try Northfin pellets too, or AAP Paradigm when I get around to it. I do veggies a few times a week, I’ll buy a bunch of stuff fresh and then blanch and freeze it in baggies to feed over the next couple months. Zucchini, peas, bok choy, cauliflower, kale, spinach, collard greens, broccoli, watercress, etc etc. I usually have four or five at any given time. The frozen proteins I do once every week or two. I’m super allergic to bloodworms so those are a special treat I only feed with gloves :P but they get mysis or brine shrimp usually.
It looks intimidating, but it’s not that difficult. I acquired this stuff bit by bit over the course of a year so you don’t have to go spend a ton of money at once. If I ever just happen to see something that looks fairly good quality for an okay price I’ll grab a small container to try out. Some I end up liking, some I don’t, but even the mediocre stuff I sometimes use as a junk treat, or as snail food. Like I wouldn’t use any of the foods here besides the Repashy, Omega One, Northfin, or NLS as staples. The Aqueon is okay-ish if you have no other option, but the Cobalt is too high in protein for daily feeding, and Hikari has gone so downhill in the last few years. I honestly wouldn’t even buy it, I just feel obligated to use up the bag I already have. Pick maybe two of those staple foods to keep on hand, rotate in veggies a few times a week, some frozen protein here and there and you’re set, don’t absolutely need anything else. Of course more is always better, if you can.
And yes, sigh, dumb as bricks aren’t they? Picky too sometimes. Try a bunch of different vegetables, leafy greens are a good place to start, or zucchini. Boil them soft (you can just chuck it in a glass of conditioned water in the microwave for 2-5 minutes) and cut it into little bite sized pieces. If they don’t go for it right away, keep trying for a couple of days in a row. Eventually they’ll get hungry and warm up to it. Keep your plec occupied with something of his own to eat and feed the goldies at the other end of the tank to try and get them all a bit of something green to eat.
Veggies high in carotenes are really good for enhancing color. So besides your obvious ones like carrot and sweet potato, that’s also going to be your dark leafy greens! If you can get your lil guys onto stuff like collard, spinach, chard, etc, that’ll definitely make a difference in their coloration :)
Gel foods are also a really good option for picky eaters. I’ve never heard of a goldfish that doesn’t like gel, seriously, they adore that shit. You can get premade mixes like Repashy, which you just mix up with some hot water and set in the fridge or freezer. Or you can make your own! Here’s some recipe ideas, or just google “goldfish gel food,” you can scale them waaaaay down if you want. I make pretty small batches that last a long time. And feel free to swap out ingredients too and experiment, or make up your own completely. Just stick to lean, low mercury seafood, and produce without too much sugar and you can mix and match as you please. The one in my freezer right now is mostly watercress and bok choy, a couple spoonfuls of NLS, some cloves of fresh garlic, spirulina, a few baby carrots, a bunch of gross string algae I scooped out of the snail tank, and a dash of paprika. The kids adore it.
Uhhhh let’s see, anything else? I treat with prazi once a year or so, preventative maintenance, like deworming your dog. Besides that I keep medicating to a minimum unless it’s really dire. Minor scrapes and bumps I leave be. Have pretty hard high pH water, usually around 8-8.2. No heater or chiller but the water temp stays low-mid 70s most of the time
I dunno, just plenty of love and attention! I redecorate their tank and make them little toys (try some sturdy nontoxic plastic beads threaded on fishing line, especially if you can find somewhere to wedge food in, enjoy the ensuing adorable) talk to them, draw on the glass...
Tumblr media
I love them!!! So much!!!! I owe them my life many times over, that’s not an exaggeration at all. Seeing them in their new tank has really reminded me of how far they’ve come and how much they mean to me. I’m not always a perfect owner and there are times I fall down on their care, but they’re still fat and happy and I’m always trying to do better

Money Diaries - End of March
Day One: 3/25
9 a.m. — I “wake up” - in reality it means I stare at my phone with one eye shut and lay in bed for another hour browsing Reddit and FB
10 a.m. — Finally decide to get out of bed, brush my teeth, and go to the kitchen. My mom bought me cheesecake from an Asian bakery! She’s leaving for China today, so I make myself 2 cups of espresso with soy milk and sit in the kitchen at chat with her until she leaves for her flight at noon.
11 a.m. — My friends and I were planning a trip to Seattle for my friend’s going away trip, and we finally booked the flight back (even though we haven’t bought our flight there yet)!!! My dad tells me to use his card cause he gets points. It was $118, but I give him $100 in cash cause I don’t have loose bills. He says its fine. $100
12 p.m. — My dad brings my mom to the airport, and I decide to try to get some interview prep done. I start by reading an article about Dropbox from the NYT since I’m trying to get into the habit of reading the news every day.
2:30 p.m. — I have work at 3:30, and it takes me a while to do my make-up and hair, so I retreat to my room to get ready.
3:45 p.m. — Finally head out for work! Another exciting day in retail.
6 p.m. — The store was crazy with terrible customers. I finally go on my 15 minute break and stop by Smashburger for a Neapolitan shake and rosemary fries. I manage to finish all the fries within 10 minutes, and I’m proud but disgusted with myself. $7.96
7:45 p.m. — I get off work 15 min late because the store was trashed. I’m exhausted and finally head home.
8 p.m. — My dad was waiting at home for me to eat dinner. We head out to a noodle place nearby our house. He pays.
9:50 p.m. — I notice a similarly priced flight that flies a little earlier than the flight we booked previously, and its to a better/more convenient airport. We all cancel our previous flight and book this one instead. It’s still charged on my dad’s card, thanks dad!
Daily Total: $107.96
Day Two: 3/26
9 a.m. — I wake up early so I can go to the library and prep for my 2 interviews. But first, I roll around in bed for a little bit.
10 a.m. — Got to the library right when it opened. I check for flights again to see if they’ve dropped - they haven’t. I start replying to emails that I received this morning, and commit to studying until at least 1.
11 a.m. — The girl sitting across from me is disgusting, so I switch seats to across the aisle.
1:30 p.m. — I didn’t get that much work done (ended up replying to a bunch of emails), but I decide to roll out so I can make lunch and take a quick nap before I Skype the BF.
1:45 p.m. — There’s not really any food at home, so I make a bowl of cereal and call it a day. I fall asleep on the couch while watching B99.
3 p.m. — I Skype the BF before work so I can get some interview prep in.
4:45 p.m. — I head out to work!! Yay.
9:30 p.m. —  Work ends and I rush home. I take a quick shower and eat left over noodles for dinner. My friends and I saw that flights to Seattle from SFO have dropped by about 50 bucks, so we buy! They buy the direct flight and I buy the only indirect flight at the same time because it’s $15 bucks cheaper. I put it on my dad’s card and give him $150 in cash, but he only takes $100. $100
10:30 p.m. — I’m feeling really tired, so I decide not to do anymore interview prep and to just call it a night so I can be well rested. I lay in bed on my phone for an hour before I finally go to sleep.
Daily Total: $100
Day Three: 3/27
6:15 a.m. — My first alarm rings - I hate myself. I hit snooze on the next few alarms.
6:30 a.m. — I finally drag myself out of bed and head to the bathroom to brush my teeth, wash my face, and put in my contacts. Then I head to my room and play some B99 as I put on my make-up and do my hair.
7:30 a.m. — I was going to get coffee on the way to the Caltrain but decided not to. My dad drops me off at the Mountain View stop right as a train is approaching. I quickly buy a ticket and get on the train and manage to snag a seat. I’ll be expensing this ticket.
9 a.m. — Finally get to SF a few minutes later than expected. I call an Uber to the office I’m interviewing at. I’ll be expensing this ride.
9:30 a.m. — There’s way more traffic than expected. I tried to prep a little more on the Uber, but I was so stressed I can’t concentrate. I finally get to the office and use the lobby bathroom so I can change into my skirt and heels, then head up.
12 p.m. — So far, I’ve said some things I probably shouldn’t have said - but I hope for the best. 3 analysts take me and another interviewee to lunch at a really fancy restaurant downstairs. There are literally no vegetarian options so I order a chicken Caesar salad without the chicken. They order 4 apps that I cant eat, and then 2 desserts that we all split.
2 p.m. — We all head back up to the office so the interviewee and I can finish up our last 2 rounds of interviews.
3 p.m. — My interviews are finally over. I don’t think I did great, but I’m trying not to dwell. I change back into my pants and flats, chat with my friend in the lobby for a little bit, and decide to walk to Boba Guys for a treat.
3:30 p.m.  — Boba Guys has a crazy long line, so I decide just to go home. I call an Uber to the Caltrain and tell my dad when I expect to be at the Mountain View station. I’ll be expensing this ride.
5 p.m.  — I get to the Mountain View station and my dad picks me up. We head home, and he cooks up a few veg dishes for us.
9 p.m.  — After napping, eating, and de-stressing on the sofa for a little bit, I decide to get to work. I review my notes about the company and a few frameworks for case studies.
10:30 p.m. — I’m tired and unmotivated. I brush my teeth and head to bed. I lay in bed on my phone for a little bit before finally falling asleep.
Daily Total: $0
Day Four: 3/28
8:15 a.m. — My alarm wakes me up and I get up to get ready for another day of interviewing.
9:15 a.m. — After finishing my hair and make-up, I head out to buy myself a cup of matcha so I can be caffeinated (but not jittery) for my interview. $4.90
9:45 a.m. — After getting back home, I eat a bowl of cereal while watching B99. Then I get to work and try to squeeze in a little more studying before I have to head out.
11 a.m. — My dad comes home to pick me up for my interview. We drive to the Caltrain and I buy a ticket (not re-imburse-able). $16.50
1 p.m. — We should’ve been in the city by now, but the train breaks down because of a problem with the power. I wait for 10 minutes before getting off the train with the bulk of everyone else, and call an Uber to the city. All the Ubers and Lyfts are super far away so it takes a while for them to reach me. $12.87
1:30 p.m. — I finally get to Blue Bottle! I go inside and snag a seat. I sit and study for about 30 minutes before I head into the bathroom to change into my skirt.
2 p.m. — I head over to the office site. I get there a little early so I sit and study for a little bit more. When the clock hits 15, I head upstairs to wait for my interview.
3:30 p.m. — The interview went terribly, and I come out of the office on the verge of tears. I call my friend to vent and cry a little bit, and she reassures me that everything will be okay and that it isn’t my fault. I’m constantly on edge with recruiting, and I’m just ready for the whole thing to be over.
4 p.m. — My friend who works in the city is able to take a quick (not-so-quick) break, so we head to Boba Guys and wait in the long line. We chat about my interview yesterday and today, and our future trip to Seattle. After we grab our drinks , we head back to her office. $4.50
5:30 p.m. — I try to call an Uber from her office, but there’s so much traffic that all the Uber’s take too long to get to me. I decide to walk to the Caltrain since it would take about the same amount of time.
6 p.m. — I finally get to the Caltrain and snag a seat. I text my dad to let him know when I would reach Mountain View.
7:30 p.m. — I finally get home! I feel disgusting and exhausted. I take a quick shower, and call the nearby pizza place for take out. I offer to share with my dad but he wants to eat left overs. $17.50
9 p.m. — Dinner and snacking time is over. I am trying to destress by watching B99 and Youtube, but it isn’t working.
Daily Total: $56.27
Day Five: 3/29
7:25 a.m. — My alarm goes off. At first, I wake up thinking that it’s so early, I can definitely go back to sleep! And then I remember I have work at 8 AM, so I get up and get ready for the day.
9 a.m. — My manager and I had to make a run to the bank, and I literally spend the entire time on my phone trying to stake out Fenway Park tickets for senior week. I feel bad, but I finally get them! $14
12:30 p.m. — Today was a crazy day at work. I swear at one point there were literally 10 strollers in the store, with babies crying left and right and the store getting trashed. I thank my lucky stars that I don’t have to clean up tonight, and head out of work for the day.
1 p.m. — After having a mental breakdown about my abilities and job searching, I heat up my left over pizza and eat it for lunch as I watch B99. I snack on some sunflower seeds, and then pass out on the couch for a few hours.
4 p.m. — I finally wake up and feel disgusting. I wash my face and put in some eye drops (since my contacts dried up in my eyes). I go to my computer and update my budget and cringe in pain as I see how much money I spent on food this month. I vow to myself to really rein it in so I can actually save some money for Europe.
7 p.m. — My dad comes home and brings Chipotle for dinner! I’m only able to finish half of mine, so I save the other half for lunch tomorrow.
Daily Total: $14
Day Six: 3/30
9:30 a.m. — I wake up, roll around in bed for a little bit, and then get up to head to the gym.
11:30 a.m. — My workout is finally done! I head home so I can shower.
12 p.m. — I heat up my left over Chipotle for lunch, and respond to a few emails. I got invited back by one of the companies I interviewed at for lunch, and I am super confused as to why because I was 100% sure that I bombed the interview and that the director did not like me. I respond saying that I am interested anyways and we schedule a time.
1 p.m. — I eat my Chipotle on the couch while watching B99. I pass out for like 3 hours.
3:30 p.m. — I finally get up off the couch. I remix my slime to make it less sticky and accidentally get some on the kitchen rug. I can’t get it off so I leave it, hoping that it’ll get less sticky with time.
4 p.m. — I retreat into my room to get ready for work. I only do my make-up since I’m feeling lazy.
4:45 p.m. — I head out to work.
9:30 p.m. — I love closing with one manager in particular cause she’s always in a rush to get out early, just like me. We leave about 15 minutes early and I get home. My dad’s not home, so I make myself a bowl of cereal and eat it in a rush since I have to head out soon. My dad gets home just as I start eating and I let him know what my plans for the night are.
10 p.m. — My friend calls me telling me that she and her boyfriend just broke up. She is not upset about it at all, which is good, and we use the time to catch up on each other’s lives. I chat with her as I drive to my other friends house. One of my friends recently got into her first choice med school, so we are celebrating! They were planning on going clubbing, but we decided to stay in and have a chill night instead.
2 a.m. — We ended up spending the night just chatting and watching tv/movies. We finally head home at 2 am, and I take off my make-up, wash my face, change, and get into bed.
Daily Total: $0
Day Seven: 3/31
10 a.m. — I wake up suuper late today because of how late I slept last night. I muster what little motivation I have to get up and get changed for the gym.
12 p.m. — I finally finish at the gym! I take a shower and heat up two Asian buns and eat two hard boiled eggs for lunch. Then I snack on some sunflower seeds before passing out on the couch for another 3 hours.
4 p.m. — I finally wake up and hate myself for sleeping for so long. This is one of the few weekends I have off and I wasted one by napping! I am still stressed out about job search, but I decide not to do anything about it today since I still need more me time.
6 p.m. — My dad gets home from biking, and after he showers and changes, we head out to a shabu shabu place for dinner. He pays - thanks dad!
9:30 p.m.  — I do a little bit of job search since I’m bored and it’ll take some of the tension I’m feeling off.
10 p.m.  — I finish up totaling my money diaries!

""If healthy foods were more affordable, would health insurance be cheaper?""
It irritates me beyond words that people these days are almost forced to have a poor diet because junk food is more affordable. Then, the health risks associated with eating junk food cause more people in the hospital, more money being shucked at pharmaceutical companies for medicine to treat the diseases cause by poor diets, and health insurance and taxes we all have to pay for regardless of how healthy we try to be. I mean, if a packet of Ramen noodles is 50 cents and an apple is $1.50, the majority of the financially stressed nation is going to reach for the Ramen. I would love to eat mostly raw fruits and veggies all day long, but I simply can't afford that and it makes me feel like the government is forcing me to eat crappy foods in order to survive. My Insurance auto accident settlement?
I was recently in a car accident where a Nissan truck ran into the back of another car that then ran into the back of me causing $2000 worth of damage to the rear of my infiniti. I received moderate whiplash to my neck and had to be taken to the hospital. I checked out without any broken bones and was prescribed medication. I went to see a chiropractor and he has been working on my neck for a couple days which makes it feel a better. Im 100% not at fault and the insurance company has taken care of my car repair, rental, and medical bills. They ask me How much do I think I want for this accident for pain and suffering. I believe I am entitled to at least $3500-5000 for my suffering I live in NC. I believe $5000 is a reasonable consider the circumstances. I could have lost my life, broke my neck and been paralyzed for life. Thank the lord that I received only a whiplash. The stress that I am undergoing, the constant pain in my neck is a reminder of the accident, which I feel fearful of driving. The time I spent recovering could have been spent enjoying my life. Besides getting behind in my school work, I am absent from my student organization at school which I am a key figure ( president AGC). I don't enjoy waking up with cramps and headaches nor do I like to take prescription pills, and therapy. I don't want to be compensation a insufficient amount that wont even cover pain and suffering I went though. It seems like you people are on the side of the insurance company and not the victims in this situation. I wonder if any of you have ever been in an automobile accident and if you have must share some sort of empathy of what I am reiterating.""

Why are insurance companies under the Obama health care plan allowed to not cover existing medical problems?
How is this making health care affordable? My physician wrote a letter stating I have no complications, but the letter BC/BS sent me was that under the Obama health care plan they do not have to cover my thyroid or anything related to it. State Farm Renters Insurance: Explain Replacement Cost Coverage to me?
From what I understand, if a claim had to be filed, I would receive the current value of an item. For instance, I have a pair of $500 shoes. They are currently priced at $450, so the pay-out would be $450 and $500, correct?. Okay, so here are my two questions: 1) Would I be bound to REPLACE the lost item? Or would they give you the current cash value to buy whatever it is that you wanted to buy? 2) Are there no such policies that exists out there: a policy that would pay you what you INITIALLY paid for an item? So that one wouldn't lost out financially in the event that an item depreciates? If I'm wrong about any of the above, or if you think I need to be sure to clarify certain things with my agent, please let me know. Thanks.""
I'm switching car insurance and it's stressing me out?

I don't know what to do anymore I'm fed up with everything. Car insurance coverage help!?
Currently I have a financed car. And is still currently paying for it monthly. After doing some research and purchasing my car insurance coverage - State Farm. My dad insisted he will help me with all the process. However, after he and I got done with everything. My coverage are, A - Liability P20 - Personal Injury Protection U, W uninsured and underinsured And finally these two: D - 500 Deductible Comprehensive G - 500 Deductible Collision which I learn online it is OPTIONAL to have: ( SO WHY DO I NEED IT EXACTLY THEN? my dad try explaining it but it didn't get through my hot head. ) So can anyone please tell me is it a requirement for me to have those to coverage D & G, if not I would really like to get it off and save some money instead of throwing it out the window. Does Wal-Mart have better and cheaper insurance than Obamacare?
http://www.examiner.com/article/washington-examiner-walmart-s-health-plans-are-better-than-obamacare On Jan. 7, 2013, The Washington Examiner released the results of an investigation finding Walmart's employee health insurance is significantly better than Obamacare. Walmart has come under mega union labor union criticism as a retailer whose employees are both underpaid and mistreated. Like many insurance plans which have been canceled as a result of Obamacare benefit regulations, Walmart's health insurance has been called substandard. However after an in-depth comparison, the watch dog team of the Washington Examiner discovered employees of Walmart receive a better bang for the buck than Obamacare. In comparison to Obama care, it was discovered that Walmart plans were a whopping five to nine times less expensive. Full-service individual coverage in a Walmart HRA plan is available through a Blue Cross Blue Shield preferred provider organization for as little as $40 a month while family coverage averages $160 a month.""

Will damages to my rental car go to my car insurance if I was not the one driving?
I have terrible luck lately. Two weeks ago I totaled my car (my fault) and I have a rental until tomorrow. Rental is from enterprise and paid for thru my car insurance. On my rental agreement I did not list any other drivers, and since it was paid for by my car insurance the guy crossed out the extra insurance and just asked me how much my car insurance deductible is and wrote that down($250). Today, I looked at the agreement and I actually hadn't signed it when I rented the car (even though there is a place for me to sign)...hmm...(?) SO, last night I was drinking and my boyfriend was not so he drove us home- in my rental. A car hit the rear driver side of us and it caused a dent and some paint damage. Called the cops, the other driver lied and nobody cited. I DO NOT want my insurance to know, since I just totaled my car. Boyfriend has full coverage, can it go on his? or will it go on mine? The cheapest way to change insurance to a new car whilst keeping current car insured whilst i sell it?
Hi, I am 20 years old and I have just bought a new car. I am trying to find the best and cheapest way to change my current insurance ( with one years no claims) to my new car and then i need to insure my old car whilst I sell it. My current car insurance policy on my car runs out on 15th February 2013 and I have cancelled my renewal. I have received the renewal which is proof of my no claims which will be transferred to my new car. Another question is... can I claim the one years no claims on my new car whilst it still runs out for a week on my old car? I have looked at temporary insurance for my current car but this was almost 400 for 28 days?!?!? If insurance companies want me to do it the legal way, they are not making it very easy! Any advice on the best way around this would be great. I know it's confusing! Thanks, Adam White""

My question is, on confused.com it asks when did you purchase the vehicle? And if i put say 2 years ago the price of the insurance drops compared to if i brought it say today. Is it ok to do this? When they ask when did you purcahse the car can i say 2 years ago? Hope this makes sense if you use confused.com you will know what i mean. Im really enthusiastic about audis and in particular the s3, im looking to join the members club online. So will this work to lower my insurance when i want to insure myself on it? Also what will be the deal with the registered keeper and owner of the vehicle? Would that be me? Even though my dad would be the person insured on the vehicle? I know im trying to obtain cheaper insurance but if i dont drive it for 2 years i dont see a problem in this. any ideas? This Month On The Farm: May 2018 - Kitchen Reno & Chick Updates, A Whistle Pigs Wind Tunnel, Jack's New Bath Mat, and More!
If you’re just tuning in, this is a brand new ongoing series in which I document each month of our lives in our transition to a simple, homemade life on a modern homestead. We ditched town and moved to the country in 2008 and we blog about both our successful and not-so-successful ventures in homesteading, switching to natural products, and embracing a whole foods lifestyle.  Check out the entire series here.
Oh, the weather.  It's been quite a blend of beautiful days, a sprinkling of humid days, and a day here and there of rain (also deemed a beautiful day - particularly to the garden!!).  While April ended up being one of the warmest on record, May was a bit cooler than normal overall.  It was a lovely month though and we were even able to get the garden in early and without row covers to keep it warm.
we've been eating a LOT of asparagus lately
herb box on the back deck
potato plants
The Garden The dehydrator has now taken it's summer position on the pellet stove.  We leave it there all summer and the first part of fall so we can throw fruits and veggies in as they come in season.  It's annual reappearance actually came about a bit early this year to ensure apples didn't go bad.  I had a few apples from our local orchard that were starting to go past their prime so I wanted to slice them up and dry them out.  So, it's all set for it's first in-season produce which will be strawberries! I did restrain myself on the garden and did not plant as much as I would have liked to.  I'm a sucker for seeds!  I really wish I had the time to plant it all as it's so gratifying to nurture it to harvest.  Instead, I resisted the urge and only planted sugar snap peas, spinach, kale, tomatoes (a LOT of tomatoes.......), peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, zucchini, green beans and cucumbers.  Most of our garden will be for putting up.  Green beans, spinach, sugar snaps, broccoli, kale and peppers will be frozen, what cukes we don't eat fresh will be transformed into pickles and canned, and tomatoes will be made into sauces and salsa and canned as well as canning them as whole tomatoes and diced tomatoes.  This is if the critters stay away - I did not plant enough for us AND them...... We have a small asparagus bed as well, which we will be expanding.  We are going to add more once the harvest is complete for the year - should be over next week.  Our blueberry bushes are still small so we'll be picking at a local field again this year.  I removed our strawberry plants last year because I just couldn't keep fighting the critters for them so I'll be picking those at a local field as well in another week or two.  We'll also do u-pick for winter squash rather than growing it this year.  Our pear tree is looking good so, fingers crossed, we shall see some delicious pears, and our elderberry bush will produce a generous amount of berries that we will need to make time to dehydrate (so we can make elderberry syrup throughout the winter for amazing immune system boosting). Our farmer's markets will keep us in supply of the remainder of veggies & fruit. Rhubarb is in season right now.  I don't grow it, however, we're able to buy it at our farmer's market.  I've made Strawberry Rhubarb Pie (using up some of our frozen strawberries), and super moist Rhubarb Cake.  I also plan to make and can a few rhubarb recipes for use this winter. I was thrilled to be able to weed and mulch our flower beds.  Well, I have 3 to go, but it's almost completed.  I haven't had time to do this in a couple of years and it looks really nice.  We added a few plants too, just to bring a bit more life to the front yard.  I also moved my zucchini plants to the front yard.  I'll be interested to see how this works.  We've struggled with squash bugs for 2 years so I'm hoping that moving them 1/2 acre away will help. Whistle Pig vs. The Wind Tunnel Ground Hogs, a.k.a. Whistle Pigs (I like this name better so I'll be using it) are quite bountiful in these parts.  They are cute little things who completely terrorize my garden from time-to-time. I haven't seen any this year, although I continue to keep a lookout, knowing they must be around.  I've seen wild bunnies, but no whistle pigs.  Until last week.  I was walking up the driveway to retrieve the garbage cans.  Although we've had whistle pigs live in our front ditch before, it didn't even strike me that there could possibly be one there.  Until we almost collided. I had grabbed both the recycling can and the regular trash can, but the recycling can was falling over.  As I leaned into it to catch it, a whistle pig whizzed by me at top speed, narrowly missing my leg.  I jumped, causing the recycling can to fall into my leg and lodge the can's edge into it before I was able to grab it and keep both it and myself standing up.  My leg hurt a bit, my heart was racing a bit, and I headed up the driveway, pushing one can and pulling the other. I shared my near collision with J who shared the same concern that I had.  It's likely to get hit by a car if it stays in the drainage pipe in our ditch.  Every single year, for the past few years, we've had a whistle pig hit and killed.  We're assuming they were the ones who took up residence in the drainage ditch.  So, it was decided that J would try to relocate it.  Off he headed to the barn and came out holding the have-a-heart cage in one hand and the leaf blower in the other.  Leaf blower?  What is THAT for?  I followed behind him, inquiring about the tactic.  His thought process was to blow into one side of the drainage ditch and leave the trap at the other end.  This way, when he runs out, he runs right into the trap.  Oh boy, I said silently.  I just don't think this is going to work. The leaf blower was turned on and the wind went through from one side to the other.  Leaves came out, a few sticks came out, a random piece of trash came out, but no whistle pig.  He tried it again.  No whistle pig.  I suggested that the poor guy was probably traumatized and wouldn't come out for days as J began to start round 3.  He finally agreed and gave up on the wind tunnel theory. We haven't seen the little guy again.  I'm not sure if he packed his little whistle pig suitcase up and left on his own or if he's just hunkered down waiting for Armageddon to come to an end.  Only time will tell.
 a work in progress......
Kitchen Renovation/Projects Well, it's not done.  We still have painting left to do but everything else is completed.  For now....... I have one final project on the calendar for next year which is to open up the wall a bit more between the kitchen and the dining room.  Because of this, we made sure we had extra hard wood flooring of both the dining room (that was installed last year) and the kitchen (the kitchen is a vinyl "hardwood" flooring). We absolutely LOVE the larger window, the countertops, the stove, the backsplash, the sink, the faucet (who knew I would love a faucet?) and the flooring.  Love, love, love it all.  The window is only inches taller than the previous window but it feels even bigger!! I will share more photos once it's completed. We are hoping to go through the garden shed in the next week.  This isn't a huge project, although I'm sure it will be time consuming.  The garden shed has, unfortunately, become a catch-all building and because this "catch-all" will be going away this year, well, we need to go through it.  Anytime you need to go through things and assess "keep", "sell" or "give away" and then box up the "keep", it seems to take more time than one would expect it to, doesn't it?  It's not, for the most part, my stuff, it's mostly J's, so I'll just be there to help organize.
the chicks are getting big!
The Coop Girls The "littles" are getting so big!!!  They are so sweet.  It's really enjoyable to watch them as they figure out what their wings are for, as they realize grass and bugs are delicious, as they learn to roost, and as they see and react to new things in their world (seeing the dogs for the first time was quite scary for them - something, I swear, they chatted about all day long). The big girls stand and glare at them.  Actually, only a few of the big girls do, but it is really funny to watch.  They are so disgusted by them and their cute little chirping - you can just read it on their face.  Egg production is up, however, and that's a good thing. We continue to get jumbo eggs about twice per week.  Still not sure who's laying these marvels, but we love to collect them.  It's always fun to see their shape (one actually looked very much like a football in shape) and size.  About a month ago we switched them to a new Certified Organic feed from Green Mountain Feeds.  They seem to really like it.  It's non-GMO and soybean free.  We are able to get it from our local feed store which makes it very handy.

Emerson
The Dogs + Jack Oh Jack.  A guy who discovers new obsessions from time-to-time.  He has a new one.  The new bathroom rug.  He believes it was purchased for him and gets very upset when anyone else dares to step foot on it.  He's a guy who loves texture so, apparently, I selected a nicely textured rug.  I bought a second one once we knew we liked it.  This way it doesn't get worn out so quickly.  J joked that we should give one of them to Jack and put it upstairs so we can once again use the bathroom in peace and without his attitude. The dogs are doing well.  They LOVE the sunny weather so there can be more outside time. More time to supervise the school buses, UPS man, and postal delivery guy.  And any white vehicles.  Oliver hates white vehicles.  I have no idea why, he has since we adopted him.  There is also some construction going on a few properties away so anytime the back-up beeping starts he jumps up and listens.  Our previous Fed-Ex guy used to back up our driveway when he would deliver to us.  It's been about a year since he's left our route but Oliver still remembers this and waits for "Mr. Mark" to come and visit him.  The poor guy is always disappointed.  So, back to napping he goes.
The Business Although it's not technically summer, to us this is the start of our summer season so we are in full swing!  We are trying to keep production running smoothly.  We start our second farmer's market next Wednesday.  It's a market we did two years ago and loved it.  Last year we were too busy to attend.  Since we are now both working for the business we can pick it back up again and we are thrilled!  It's a beautiful market.  It lasts from June through September, making it a nice addition to our week.
How was your May?

36 Easy Tips That Will Keep Your Food Fresh And Save You Money
Tumblr media
Have you ever thought about how much food waste occurs in your house? According to Money magazine, the average household tosses out about 14% of the food they buy. For the typical family, that adds up to over $1,300 worth of food per year! We can probably all think of about a hundred different things we could do with that kind of money. We'd put it towards a family vacation, catch up on bills, get a new outfit… anything other than throw it away!
Related: These 10 Hacks Will Help You Cut Down On Food Waste
Fortunately, a lot of food waste can be avoided by learning a few simple food storage tips. When foods are stored properly, they'll stay fresher for a longer period of time. Making a few simple changes to the way you store your food can help you avoid waste, shop less, and save money on your grocery bill! So today I'm sharing 36 quick tips for storing food that will help keep it fresh. I've broken the list into categories, including fruits and veggies, meat and eggs, pantry staples, and dairy products. But before we get to the more specific stuff, let's get started with a few general tips for ensuring food freshness. :-)
General Tips For Keeping Your Food Fresh
Tumblr media
#1 – Make sure the inside of your fridge is the right temperature! Ideally your fridge should run right around 38-40°F. This will keep your food as fresh as possible, without making your food so cold that it freezes. Use a fridge thermometer to verify the temperature of your fridge!
#2 – Make sure to check on the expiration date on foods while you're shopping. It's fine to buy foods that are a day or two away from their expiration date, but only do it if you can make a solid plan to eat that food in the next day or two.
#3 – Try to plan a few meals that center around what's in your fridge, and how long it is expected to last. For instance, if you have a bag of spinach in your fridge that is on its last legs, you could plan to use it in omelets the next day!
Tumblr media
#4 – Grow your own food! Home-grown tomatoes, squash, and herbs are packed with flavor, and can be harvested and eaten the very same day. You don't have to worry about how long your food has traveled or how long ago it was picked when you grow it yourself.
#5 – Buy local! If you're not much of a gardener, the next best option for fresh produce is to buy it from a local farmer. Local produce is sure to last you at least a few days longer than their supermarket equivalents, which has already traveled long distances before it arrives at the store. And it's always good to support local businesses!
#6 – Clean and prep fresh food shortly after you get home, according to how you like to eat or use it. If it's all prepped and ready to go for cooking or snacking, you'll be much more likely to actually use it before it goes bad!
Tips For Storing Fruits & Vegetables
Tumblr media
#7 – Line the bottom of the crisper drawers in your fridge with paper towels. The paper towels will absorb excess moisture and help keep many foods fresh, rather than rotting prematurely.
#8 – You can help keep mushrooms from getting slimy by wrapping them in paper towels before refrigerating.
#9 – If you notice your tomatoes are about to go bad, roast them in slices or chunks. Place the roasted pieces in a container with olive oil, and they'll stay good in the fridge for about a week.
Tumblr media
#10 – Wash berries in water and a small splash of vinegar before refrigerating them to help keep them fresh. Store them in the plastic container they came in, or a ziplock bag. Place them in the back of the fridge where it stays coldest.
#11 – Wrap lettuce in a damp paper towel before storing to help keep it fresh. If your lettuce has started wilting, you can usually revive it by soaking it in ice water for several minutes.
#12 – Store kale, collard greens, Swiss chard, and other hardy greens with their stems in a glass of water. Cover the greens loosely in a plastic bag, and they'll stay nice and crisp longer.
Tumblr media
#13 – To keep celery, carrots, and radishes fresh, chop them and store them in the fridge in a container of water. They'll stay fresh for a surprisingly long time this way!
#14 – Coat whole squashes in a thin layer of vegetable oil and store them in your pantry. They can stay good for months this way!
#15 – Keep apples separate from your other food. Apples give off ethylene gas, which causes other foods to decay more quickly. And if your apples start getting soft, you can always cook them rather than eating them raw!
Tumblr media
#16 – You can triple the lifespan of green onions by storing them in a jar of water on your counter top. The tops will keep growing and you can snip them off as needed!
#17 – Asparagus will last longer in the fridge if stored with its ends in water. Just stand the bunch up with the larger ends at the bottom, and stick it in a shallow glass of water.
#18 – Avoid separating bananas before you plan to eat them. They stay fresher, longer when kept in a bunch! Store bananas at room temperature until ripe. If they've over-ripened, stick them in the freezer and use them to make banana bread later on.
Tumblr media
#19 – Don't store bulbs of garlic in a closed container. It will last much longer if stored in an open basket or a paper bag.
#20 – When buying avocados that need to ripen, store them at room temperature. If an avocado is ripe but you don't plan on using it for a few days, stick it in the fridge to stop it from going bad.
#21 – Keep herbs fresh by storing them in whole bunches. Just rinse the bunch, put it in a ziplock freezer bag, and toss it in your freezer. It should stay fresh for up to a month this way! When you're ready to use them, just chop them up and toss them in whatever you're cooking.
Tips For Storing Meat, Fish, And Eggs
Tumblr media
#22 – Fish should be kept in a bag on top of a bowl of ice inside your fridge. Eat it as soon as possible! You can also freeze fish to keep it fresh for longer.
#23 – Store eggs in their original carton. If you can't decide if your eggs are still fresh, place one in a cup of water. Fresh eggs should sink, while old eggs usually float.
#24 – Meat and poultry should be kept in its original packaging if you'll eat it in the next day or two. If not, wrap it in tin foil or stick it in a ziplock bag, then store it in your freezer. Smoked meats like bacon, ham, etc. can be wrapped in a vinegar-dampened cloth, then wrap the whole thing in wax paper and freeze.
Tips For Storing Bread And Pantry Staples
Tumblr media
#25 – Freezing flour for 48 hours is sure to kill any insects that may be present. After that, transfer it to a tightly sealed container. Store the container in a cool, dark location.
#26 – Buy whole bean coffee, and grind it as needed to get the best flavor. Store your coffee beans in an airtight and opaque container to keep it fresh, and use within 3-4 days. (If you bought more than you can use in a few days, freeze the rest to keep it fresh.)
Tumblr media
#27 – To help keep weevils at “bay,” store your flour, rice, or cornmeal with a bay leaf in the container. The scent of the bay leaf should deter weevils from moving in.
#28 – Storing bread in the fridge can actually cause it to store more quickly due to the moist environment. Bread is best kept on your countertop in a tightly sealed bag or container.
Tumblr media
#29 – Store your dry foods in airtight containers, rather than the packaging they came in! This will help keep pasta, cereal, pretzels, and other foods fresher for longer. I like to use mason jars, but any airtight container will do!
#30 – If you live in a humid area, you've likely experienced salt clumping up in your salt shaker. To prevent this from happening, put a pinch of dry rice into the shaker too. The rice will absorb excess moisture and keep the salt from sticking together.
Tumblr media
#31 – Storing brown sugar in your freezer will keep it from hardening. For brown sugar that has already gone rock-solid, toss a piece of bread or a marshmallow in with it to soften it up.
#32 – Honey won't ever spoil, so don't toss it out when you see crystals or cloudiness. Just microwave it on medium heat in 30 second increments until it clears up and thins back out.
Tips For Storing Dairy Products
Tumblr media
#33 – Before storing cheese in your fridge, wrap it securely in wax paper. Wax paper allows the cheese to breathe while keeping it dry. After cutting cheese, you can rub butter on the cut part to help keep it fresh. Cheese keeps pretty well in the freezer too!
#34 – Keep milk in the main part of your fridge rather than the door. Items stored in the door of your fridge are subjected to temperature fluctuations every time the fridge door is opened. Milk will stay fresh for longer if kept nice and cold!
Tumblr media
#35 – To keep cottage cheese or sour cream fresh, here's an easy tip. Store it upside-down in your fridge! Inverting the container creates a vacuum which will help reduce the chance of mold or bacteria growing on the surface.
#36 – Store butter in it's original package. Stock up when it's on sale and freeze it to keep it fresh. Seal it up in a freezer bag, and it will stay good for up to 6 months in there!
Using these simple tips, you can cut back on food waste and save yourself some money while you're at it! Do you have any tips for keeping food fresh? Share them in a comment below, and we can continue the conversation! :-)

How to Take Care of a Poinsettia Plant for Years of Blooming
The poinsettia plant has come to represent the holiday season in much of the world. Knowing how to take care of a poinsettia plant can mean years of growth and blooming.
I’m sad to say I always just threw the poinsettia plant in the compost heap after its pretty leaves and flowers fell off. But you can actually keep poinsettia plants for years. They’ll even turn into large tree-like plants!
One of the Christmas traditions of the south is to put poinsettia plants in the church auditorium in honor of a loved one who has passed on. The room will be full to overflowing with poinsettias of every color available but mostly red. The service before Christmas, you are invited to take your poinsettia home for the holidays.
About six years ago, we were preparing to clear out the auditorium and one of the little old-timer ladies asked me if I wanted to take some of the extras home to keep for next year. I must have looked confused because she said, “Honey, you know you can keep them for years, don’t you?” I had to confess no, I’d never heard that before. She graciously told me how to take care of a poinsettia plant for years of luscious loveliness.

The First Step is in Selecting the Poinsettia Plant
When you go to purchase your poinsettia, look for dark green foliage. The colors of the leaves should be bright and vibrant and in proportion to the size of the pot and plant stem. The flowers, the center of the colorful leaves, should not be showing any pollen but should be in tight, yellow clusters.
Avoid any plant which doesn’t meet these standards of a healthy plant. Also, if you see drooping leaves or plants which just don’t look “right” avoid them. They may already be damaged too much to recover well.
Don’t purchase or use an unhealthy plant or a plant with a bug problem for keeping over. Be sure to protect your plant on the way home. It shouldn’t be exposed to wind or freezing temperatures.
Is it Worth the Work to Keep a Poinsettia?
There are two schools of thought on this. Some people like to keep them over and enjoy the challenge. Others say it’s not worth the work and they should be treated like a Christmas tree and thrown out.
You have to decide for yourself. I have to say there is no guarantee they will re-bloom the next year even if you do everything right. As a gardener, I know this is possible with anything I plant. There’s always a certain amount of work and risk-reward in the process.
How to Take Care of a Poinsettia Plant Through the Holidays
Your poinsettia will bloom from late November through February so it’s important to pick out a healthy plant. Once you get your poinsettia plant safely home, display it for the holidays by placing it where it will receive plenty of natural light while avoiding direct sunlight. You want to avoid placing it in high traffic areas, drafty spots or near ceiling fans and heat sources. Any of these can irreversibly damage your plant.
You don’t want to put the poinsettia close to cold windows. Since the poinsettia is a tropical plant, it likes temperatures ranging from 60 to 70ºF. Just like many of the best houseplants for clean air indoors, the poinsettia doesn’t do well in high temperatures.
The poinsettia likes to be dry between waterings. Don’t water yours unless it is dry. If you leave your poinsettia in its colorful holiday foil wrap, you have to remember to drain the foil by cutting or punching holes in the bottom so the plant doesn’t sit in water. Over-watering is the most common cause of poinsettia death.
When you water the poinsettia, soak the soil so that the soil is saturated all the way through. Let the pot drain well so that there’s no excess water. You can judge your watering efforts by the leaves. Too much water and the bottom leaves will turn yellow and drop off. Too little water and the leaves will wilt and the poinsettia plant will drop its middle and lower leaves.
How To Take Care of a Poinsettia Plant For Reflowering
If your climate allows it, the poinsettia prefers outdoors to indoors. If your climate doesn’t allow for outdoor living, at least put your plant outdoors as soon as weather permits. Don’t expect your poinsettia to ever look like the one you bought.
To get that store-bought look, you can use the pruned cuttings to start new plants. This is because the poinsettias we buy at the store are just that. Pruned pieces from a sapling. Now you know!
If you want to keep your poinsettia over for reflowering, there are some special steps you’ll need to take. Remember, while there’s no guarantee the plant will reflower even after all your care, there is a good chance it will. You can also help it grow into a poinsettia “tree.”
Pruning for Shape
If you want to keep the small bush look, trim the plant down to about 6” above the main stem. You can root the shoots you cut off and get more poinsettias.
If you want a larger bushy poinsettia, remove the tops of each main shoot. If any new growth starts, pinch it off until mid to late July. This goes for all the poinsettia plant shapes.
For a “tree-like” poinsettia, remove all of the shoots from the main stem. Leave the top of the main stem in place. Do not prune this stem except to remove all side shoots. Keep any new growth trimmed off until mid-late July.
Light Needs Before Flowering Season
Once the flowering season is over and you’ve pruned the plant to the shape you want, don’t give it full sun. If you do, you’ll cause the leaves remaining to be scorched and the plant damaged.
Be sure your poinsettia is in full shade for the first two weeks. After two weeks of full shade, move it to partial shade for two weeks. Next, move it to partial to full sun. This is called hardening off your plant. This is especially important if you’re putting your plant outdoors.
How to Take Care of a Poinsettia Plant Late Winter through Early Spring
This is the time to do the pruning. Be sure you don’t leave any flowers on the plant as you shape it. This is usually February to March. You can “put it to bed” or let it bloom until it’s done, whichever you prefer. Most people put theirs to bed because they’ve tired of the holiday decoration.
Keep your poinsettia where it will get plenty of light and not get cooler than 60 or warmer than 70. At least, this is the ideal environment. My plants don’t get ideal. It’s not that I don’t try, it’s just that I don’t stop to pay attention to exactly how cool or warm an area is. Fertilize as needed every two weeks and water like we talked about before.
How to Take Care of a Poinsettia Plant Late Spring through Summer
Now is the time to re-pot your plant to a larger container. Be sure to use a well-draining soil such as succulent soil. You can mix your own if you like by including one part peat moss and one part vermiculite in your garden soil.
If you’re going to grow your poinsettia outside, you have two options. You can leave it in a larger pot or you can plant your pot in the soil up to the pot rim. Either way works fine. I don’t put mine in the ground.
Do not take your plant outside until your nighttime temperature is steadily above 50ºF. It’s a good idea to not take your plant outside until you’ve pruned it. Pruning is a shock to any plant so be kind and give it a few days to recover from pruning before you set it outside.
Your poinsettia will need to be fertilized about every two weeks. Use a houseplant fertilizer according to the directions on the bottle. For now, you’re just watering and fertilizing and letting your plant rest.
How to Take Care of a Poinsettia Plant During Fall
Watch for frost warnings. You’ll have to bring your poinsettia plant indoors before the first frost. Freezing will seriously damage or kill the plant. You can set it out during the day if you like, as long as the temperature isn’t below 50ºF. You can also just place it in a sunny window during this time.
Continue fertilizing your poinsettia plant and watering as usual.
At the end of September, put your plant in complete darkness just like you would a Christmas Cactus. No street light or any light can be allowed to enter the closet or room the poinsettia is in at night. Do this from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m. or as close to these hours as your schedule allows. Do this until around the first of December.
During the day (after 8 a.m.) set your plant in an area where it will receive plenty of light. The temperature needs to be between 60-70ºF. Any nighttime temperature above 70 will delay the process of reflowering.
When you see the leaves begin to change color, you can stop the nighttime darkness and put your poinsettia in full light. Decrease the fertilizer to once a month and be sure to not overwater.
If you prefer to not move the plant in and out of darkness, you can use warm fluorescent lights during the day. Don’t use normal grow lights because the poinsettia needs warm white light. Use one 100 W bulb for every poinsettia plant. Place the bulb about a foot and a half above the plant adjusting as they grow.
You can use HPS lights but beware. The HPS light gives off a signature which law enforcement agencies track because it’s used to grow a particular plant which is illegal in most states. Just didn’t want you to get a knock on the door and be surprised by the number of officers there and a search warrant!
Tips for How to Take Care of a Poinsettia Plant
Do not disturb your poinsettia during blackout hours. Most people say 14 hours of darkness is adequate, but everyone agrees 16 hours will ensure your best results. This is especially true if you use warm lights or expose it to bright sun during the “waking hours”.
Watch for flower indicators. The first sign is known as “rusting out.” The top of the leaves begin to change color because they’ve received the signal that it’s fall.
Once the poinsettia begins to flower, be sure it’s exposed to bright light, but not more than 10 hours a day. Either sunlight or artificial warm white light.
The light exposure for at least 9 hours a day will keep your poinsettia flowering all the way through February and maybe even as late as May.
If you should be ready to put your plant to bed before it has flowered itself out, put it under an artificial light source for 24 hours. This signals the plant spring or summer has arrived and it’s time to rest.
Now you know how to take care of a poinsettia plant so it will reflower. Is it too much work for you? Is it a challenge to your gardening skills?
It’s much more involved than say knowing how to care for a shamrock plant, but I’ve learned many people love the challenge and the results.
