Red Rising Re-Read: Mentions of Mustang and Darrow’s Relationship in between Red Rising and Golden Son

I’m sure I’ve missed a few, but here are all quotes I collected, I desperately need a fanfiction of their time between Institute and Academy.

I just finished Morning Star and have no idea how to feel about Virginia keeping Little Pax a secret from Darrow. Like he didn’t get to hold him as a baby or watch his first steps and hear his first words. Like……… this feels like a violation of his parental rights and feels very reminiscent of Eo not telling him she was pregnant and then intentionally getting hung. Like, Ladies, those were his kids too, he’s got some rights here. Please, tell me if I’m insane or over thinking this. Perhaps, as a fellow fan for a longer period of time, you have more developed thoughts on this? (Also, your master post says you’re to be called Mr Apple and a gay/boy-kisser but your bio says she/her, is this fully accurate? What would you prefer to be identified as?)

Oohooo my first Red Rising related ask…

I’m currently about a qauter to half the way through dark age (2 books ahead) so my memory of morning star and the books before is abit foggy, but alas, I shall try my best for you.

I believe that mustang didn’t tell Darrow simply for the reason that she knew that if she did, he’d change.

Not in a bad way, but he’s soften, he’d want to be around her and his new born child and if we’re being completely honest, that is not ideal in the middle of a war.

I can see why you feel this way towards it, tbh, I wasn’t a massive fan either. But it’s good to realise the context.

Since red rising Darrow has literally been a machine of war, sure he’s regretted stuff and he’s human and he is capable of expressing others feelings but. The vast majority of the time he’s been like a bulldozer. So, if you then tell that bulldozer they have a child mid way through trying to win a war…. That bulldozer is more likely to think less about the war and more about his lil kiddo.

So, I think it is kind of shitty because in a way she hid information from him. But also it’s very understandable why, at least in my opinion.

In regards to Eo?… ehhhhhhh… I really can’t remember much about her apart from the fact she was literally just a child who wanted the end of gold and she’s what started Darrow on the war path. Why she didn’t tell him she was pregnant? Most likely because she knew what she was doing was dangerous and could foresee her own death. Maybe she didn’t want to tell him because she didn’t want to make her eventual death even worse.

Oh god.. can you imagine if he found out literally just as he pulled her feet?? I’m imaging some split reality where Darrow still becomes a gold, but instead of going through the institute and “rising” he literally fucking (again with the bulldozer metaphor) bulldozers through EVERYONE without literally a spec of help.

No Sevro, no Mickey, no Pax , no Mustang.

So either, Darrow literally goes full god and kills everyone with zero help

Orion tries to keep up his positive and smiley attitude as much post-the polar war, but anyone who served in war in amore personal n physical way won't be completely okay. there were lessons that one is guaranteed to learn and carry with them forever if they survive and Orion's life wasn't ever Too badly threatened (maybe there was an attack on his facilities a few times but yeah. boy big n valuable the opposing side wouldn't wanna completely destroy him)

so I'm thinkin that at the start of it all he served more as a mascot than anything. the soldiers kind of hated him for it cuz he just talks big game n does nothing. but Orion is a good, brave, protective person, so despite his Admin trying to warn him Not to, he begged the general on site to accept his overseers as spies/messangers for the troops. the general didn't want to at first, cuz Orion as an Iterator is a religious object and this could possibly damage him, which his Houses would Not like. but Orion begged on n reassured it will be fine, so the general accepted

so not only did Orion did stuff like run iterations on tactics (the more expected thing of him to do in this situation) he also personally beared witness to the horrors of wars on both sides. ended up striking camaraderie n feeling of brotherhood with the Eo's soldiers n the general became smth of a father figure. ended up understanding that wars are often not black and white and there isn't truly such a thing as really winning one

and I'm Thinkin that his war-connected wisdom should absolutely show up in Saint-time and be a comfort to Notos. Orion would be ascended just before Sporadic. in a way, he gives Notos a certain kind of peace/reassurance that it would really need after ascending Haboob (That is pending)

I recently reread all of Across the Void, and idk I'd anyone else really picked up on this because it isn't a huge detail or anything, but several times throughout the story Zekei mentions that he is a "technical Cyber" and Pax is a "community cyber", but like...what does that mean? Is it important? Which kind is Eos? Which kind is the MC? Why would it be mentioned if it had no impact on anything whatsoever??? Am I the only person that kinda wishes a lot more of this stuff got explained?

'Since Across the Void is about to be released again, let me just say that I find BOTH Pax and Eos SO ANNOYING! I realized I didn’t talk much about my feelings on Across the Void and that’s kind of because... I didn’t really have any?

It felt like right when it was getting my interest, it got really rushed. I didn’t care super much for the love interests. Some of the characters were okay, but I wasn’t even that into their dynamic. I liked running the cruise ship and the MC was cool, but I found playing as Pax and Eos tiring? ALSO WHY DID THEY BOTH GET PETS BUT NOT ME ;~;

I just wanted to be a peaceful space captain who helped people and it just kept going crazy. I also find it ironic that I picked some Jura choices at the start, but Vanguard ones towards the end. I still wasn’t really on either side though (I did, however, feel a bit bad for turning the spy in but poisoning their water supply was a disgusting thing to do).

From what I got from the story, the war broke out because the Jura felt the Vanguard were being too greedy with supplies/not sharing things enough, but that was apparently because the Void destroyed a lot of their resources and they just... didn’t tell people because they felt it’d be better to keep things limited than start a huge panic about an actual bad guy. 

But I don’t know, maybe if you mentioned it people could work together?? I’m still annoyed about the betrayals and the fact that apparently nobody knows how to talk to one another. I also don’t know why Pax was still OMGJURAONLY when she learned more about everything going on or Eos being all VANGUARDONLY when he learned more about the Jura too and why it started. Like nobody knew how to talk to each other in this game. 

I was also surprised by the lack of any kind of epilogue. It felt very... anti-climatic. I’m glad I could at least save everyone though.

I wouldn’t even say I disliked the book (outside of the character switching--I just didn’t find it worked well in this book. I can’t really explain why, but it never sat well with me and I found most of Eos’ and Pax’s scenes boring)-- it was okay, but the ending just felt so... lackluster.

On the bright side, at least it actually gave me an ending where I can stay alive with everyone and save the world *STARES AT ENDLESS SUMMER* :|

Chapter Reviews: May 7-11, 2019

Wishful Thinking Chapter 5: I have to admit that I'm frustrated at this story not addressing Ellen properly. Every time she shows up, it's to tear her down without actually getting to know her. Sure this story's okay because of some interviews I like, such as with Tilly and the library, but can I talk about how unbearable Alec is? And not to mention that Carmichael's awfully shady.

I think it has become obvious that Aubrey's a creep forced on us. Like, I'm not planning to romance him, yet he always wonders whether or not I'll reciprocate his feelings. I need to have a chat with him ASAP. And how does talking with Aubrey's sister and niece improve the MC's journalism career?

Apparently Ellen suspects the MC of a secret and is out to investigate it, eh? Well, I hope it gives me a chance to discuss her issues, especially on her pride. This story's starting to shape the MC into a Mary Sue, and I don't like it.

Across the Void Chapter 21: I'm surprised Cyber is empty because everyone evacuated, or so it seemed. I'm still suspicious on the people, however. Especially the Elara siblings' parents, who apparently worked on Cyber's secret weapon and kept it a secret. I wonder whether or not they wanted to prevent unnecessary panic, but I feel like they should've told their kids sooner.

Anyway, now that my MC has hooked up with Sol (while Pax and Eos don't get to hook up), I'm nervous to see how the showdown with the Void will turn out.

High School Story: Class Act Chapter 13: Well, that was a relaxing chapter, though it's no saying much because I'm ready for the election drama to end. It's boring me. I need more time with Skye, who's barely around, and her story's still ongoing.

Since when did Rory propose to have the abandoned building turned into a greenhouse? Was it in a premium option I missed? Either way, this book's boring me so much that a part of me doesn't want to care.

Nightbound Chapter 4: Man, this story captivated me even more. I get to meet another Nighthunter in the form of Katherine, who seems interesting even though I didn't pick the premium option to pursue her. I was worried for Cal and his brother Donny, especially when it's revealed that he has a massive gambling debt, and he had to duel against a minotaur to pay off the debt. I have a bigger respect for Cal than before when he chose to duel in his brother's place. I may not say much about this chapter, but I'm excited for more.

Is it just me, or does male MC's premium outfit look like the one Peter Graves wore during the actual heist? I think it's funny, considering that I miss The Heist: Monaco, and I really need enough diamonds to recruit some members I couldn't afford during my first run.

Passport to Romance Chapter 9: I have the urge to punch Tristao for breaking Marisa's heart. She doesn't deserve such a rude awakening during her own birthday. Yet at the same time, I feel like I've only seen one side of her and Tristao's relationship. Sure he's no saint, but I feel like Marisa herself didn't give him enough attention.

Again, Sumire has proven to be the MVP of this story. If it wasn't for her getting to know Psyclop and sketching how he might look like underneath his mask, the vlog's views would stagnate. It may be a premium option, but that's proof that she's the most reliable person among the gang.

It was funny to see Ahmed wearing Psyclop's mask to avoid his rabid fangirls. I cringed when one of them said she kept a shirtless picture of him. Definitely the kind of person I should avoid. Marisa's speech on them fawning over someone who doesn't love them back is badass.

One thing that caught my attention when playing this chapter is that it divides the attention between Marisa and Ahmed instead of mainly focusing on Marisa. It's different from the Lucerne chapters, where Elliot gets undivided attention. That's proof that Elliot is indeed favored by the writers while the others were crammed in. Bah!

Since the next chapter is about Ahmed preparing for his soccer match, I wonder why he spends much of the time clubbing instead of preparing. Anyway, he better not be late.

Open Heart Chapter 13: This is one tense chapter, and I love it. First of all, I was shocked to see that Ethan has resigned. That wouldn't feel right for Edenbrook, given that he's one of the best doctors. Either way, I hope he makes a comeback to the scene.

I don't mind working with Aurora. In fact, she's undoubtedly a capable doctor, and it was nice to see her and the MC working together on Tommy's case despite their initial hostility. My favorite part was when they contributed equally to the diagnosis. I knew she's ultimately innocent, but I also want to understand her better. She's been established as a complex character since her debut (case in point, her irritation when people talked about her aunt), and from her sarcastic way of "congratulating" the MC, I think she handed Dolores to the MC in order to move the MC up in the rankings. I'm not saying it's a sympathetic move, but one that makes sense. After all, it's already too late to assume she's one-dimensional since her debut.

So Landry's the snitch who told Mrs. Martinez's family that the MC treated her, eh? Well, I'm not surprised because of his objection. I still wonder whether or not he sabotaged the MC's pager. There's still more to him than just this moment. I mean, we still don't know his motivations, and he has to answer for everything he has done.

The Elementalists Chapter 9: I enjoy this chapter a lot. Visting Kane and flirting with him was fun, and it was nice to get another spell from him. I managed to impress him, which led him to reveal more info on Theia. What's even more awesome is the fight between Kane and Alma when the latter barged to the former's hideout with Penderghast's faculty with her. I also have to give a round of applause to the Pend Pals for looking after one another and the MC.

One of the things I like about this chapter is whether siding with Alma and Kane will affect the MC's morality. Honestly, they're both untrustworthy. After all, I still have little info from Alma so far, so she could be hiding an ulterior motive. Not to mention that she generally doesn't care much about humanity's condition and is more concerned with bringing Kane to the fold. So far, I sided with her, but it's still not a final decision. I need to figure out how my MC would react first.

They never explained it as far as I saw. chapter 6 had a half-assed attempt at it, I think it was six, but still, yeesh

So I’m not losing my mind by realizing I know next to nothing about either of them then. It kind of seems like maybe the writers were afraid of doing too much info-dumping by trying to explain the situation more in-depth, but that would’ve helped more. Otherwise the conflict seems absolutely pointless. For all I know someone could’ve stolen someone’s cow and that was how it all started.

I don’t even remember the explanation from Chapter Six anyway other than Pax said the Jura are mistreated or something and Eos says the Vanguard are order or so they present themselves as. You’d think with having two siblings standing firm on either side of the war with their opinions we could get some more information. Guess I’ll stick to neutral as much as I can or I’ll die with the spaceship and free myself from this predicament.

Here’s my (unasked) two cents: I totally understand pixelberry making money, and I’m rarely bothered by paywalls and stuff, especially now that free diamonds are much easier to get. I don’t really mind when stuff like extra perks and info and scenes are behind paywalls, or like being prom queen in hss. My problem is when they put the ENTIRE POINT OF THE BOOK behind a paywall. Like in ame, or people dying in ilb. The ending to vos was bs, but that one doesn’t bother me quite as much because at...

[...least you get to solve the murder. When you spend the entire book working toward something only to find you can’t achieve that unless you pay diamonds, it makes the entire book feel like such a waste of time, and I feel like I’ve been tricked. Romantic scenes behind paywalls? Okay! Those weapons and letters behind paywall? Okay! Buying a special clothing/“adopt” a pet to unlock some kind of an advantage? Okay! Putting vital information to the plot behind a paywall? Not okay.

I know PB needs to make money we all need, this is a capitalist world where we live in but essential things to the plot shouldn’t be behind a paywall. That VoS ending was total bs but yeah I get your point. But I remember during ATV we had to pay diamonds to know Eos and Pax povs on the war so they could help us choose which side we would support and that was unfair. Even though MC has nothing to do with the war, they get dragged to it and it’s a big part of the plot and we shouldn’t have to pay to know more about it. It’s unfair.

And I always remember TC&TF point system. If we had enough legend/fire points, we would be able to unlock some options, instead of spending diamonds. I loved it. They could have exported this system to The Heist: Monaco. And in ES, I remember that some dialogue options would affect your relationship with the gang and if you have an enough good relationship with X character, it would affect how they’d react to what you were going to say (like if you were 😐 with Craig, you had 35% of success, for example). They could have made something similar to ILB nerve system, idk. PB has great solutions in the past, but they’ve been heavily investing on diamond features and it’s affecting on how we play the books 😔 because there are some books that we have zero idea of what’s happening because it’s all behind paywalls

I know a lot of people didn’t like playing as the siblings in Across The Void, and you’re entitled to your opinion ofc, but I don’t think it’s just “ROE in space”, I think it’s actually kind of necessary, because there’s a war happening and we’re getting three different perspectives on it: MC, who just wants to keep her ship and the passengers safe (though presumably your alliance can change later depending on your choices), Eos, a Vanguard Marshall, and Pax on the side of the Jura. AND we get at least one hot male and female LI for each of them.

Summary: This fic is so short that I'll basically be listing the plot here. Just know it's a funny scene with pizzas included.

1) MC is Nova and will be a they/them throughout the story. They can be any gender you want.

3) If ever this somehow starts a fandom war, I didn't mean for it to happen.

After a day training for their future exams, Zekei and Nova decide to rest up at Nova's house.

"Yeah you are right, we probably just need a few more training sessions and I'm sure we'll be able to ace the exams," said Nova as they entered the modest house.

Zekei was going to reply when his stomach started growling. Realising what happened, he started blushing.

"Let me prepare something real quick and we'll continue the conversation," said Nova with a small chuckle.

"Can't we order a pizza instead ? I don't want you to was time cooking," proposed Zekei.

Crap. Zekei said the cursed word. Pizza. That word has brought life long discord and pertubance to the Elara family. Nova’s only hope that everything stays normal now is if their siblings were absent. And unfortunately it was not the case...

"Did someone just mention pizza?" Said Eos who popped up from his room upstairs.

"Yay! Pizza! It's been a while since we had some,” said Pax who came out of the bathroom at the same instant.

"Looks like pizza it is. What type of pizza do we want to order?" Asked Zekei innocently.

"I'm fine with anything as long as it has pineapples on it. I think a Hot Chicken Tropicaza would be amazing. Plus it has no ugly black olives," proposed Eos only for him to be stopped by Pax.

"Hold on right there! You are not putting those disgusting pineapples in there. I really don't understand how you can enjoy pineapple on pizza when also hate the best part of any pizza, the black olives. They simply taste so good. How about we forget those ugly pineapples and get ourselves a Beef L'Oliverie with extra lemon slices. It makes the olives taste even better," proposed Pax with a proud smile.

"Hell no! The only thing that taste worse than these are McSpacey's chicken drumsticks," replied the oldest sibling.

"Hey I actually love them!" Complained the younger sibling.

"That's probably why you look like one (link to what I’m referencing)" said Eos with a smirk.

"At least in not named after a pityful lip balm from the 21st Century," countered Pax.

"Wait, what?" Said Eos confused.

"Yeah what? Sorry Pax but we kind of lost you there," commented Zekei who had only been watching the drama silently from the side the whole time.

"Nevermind. We are having a Beef L'Olivier with extra Lemon Slices and that's it!" Roared Pax.

"No! We are having a Hot Chicken Tropicaza!" This time is was Eos.

"Beef L'Olivier!"

"Hot Chicken Tropicaza!"

"BEEF L'OLIVIER!"

"TROPICAZA!"

"Why don't we just make half of the pizza a L'Olivier while the other half would be a Tropicaza?" Proposed Zekei in an attempt to calm the two.

"NOOO!" Yelled both with an intense glare making Zekei retreat under the table.

The fight was going to continue when the door bell rang.

"Delivery boy from Natillicious Pizzas here. Please open the door," said the voice over the intercom.

"No need to worry guys. I'll get it," said Nova as they went to take the two huge pizza boxes and then bring it back to the kitchen.

"I knew you guys would fight yet again, so I took the liberty to command while you guys were fighting," said Nova.

"Woah. You are truly the best, Nova !" Said Zekei.

"Yeah! Anyway which one is the Beef L'Olivier?" Said Pax.

"Beef L'Olivier? I didn't order that," said Nova.

"Yes! That means two Hot Chicken Tropicazas. I love you so much Nova," said Eos with a victorious smile.

"I didn't order that either. I decided to order my favourite pizza instead," said Nova confused.

Instantly both of Nova's siblings looked at each other with a disgusted face and slowly left the kitchen while sulking.

"No way I'm eating that. I'm out of here," said Pax.

"I'm no longer in a mood for pizza. I'm going back to my room," said Eos.

"Well. That means more pizza for us Zekei. Here, you can have that full pizza," said Nova as they handed Zekei one of the pizza boxes.

"I guess bon appetit," said Zekei with a smile that slowly faded as he opened the box and saw the toppings on the pizza. It had your usual cheese and sauce.... but also banana slices, green peas and mayonnaise....

"I think I'll take it back home. I'm no longer hungry," said Zekei as he immediately closed the box and started heading towards the exists.

"Whatever fits you. See you afterwards Zekei," said Nova as they started eating their pizza.

"Yeah... sure..." said Zekei as he left and as soon as he was outside, he threw the pizza into the bin.

"Why is that family like that ..." he muttered to himself.

Woot. I hope you guys enjoyed the fic. I'm really liking ATV and it is really inspiring me to write. I may write more about it but it will likely be short writings since I also currently focusing on my end of year exams.

And then when Eos tells her that there could have been another way she responded with "it was the only way". Yea I don't know about you but clearly more to Pax's story then we originally thought.

- in GS there are rumours that he eats glass; - Lorn au Arcos actually backs up the rumours - he has a very strong moral code, but he always questions it and so he adapts and learns; - he matched Mustang at the party on Luna (they were the only ones wearing black) and Theodora might be responsible for it; - he has many nieces and nephews and is a great uncle; - he is highly skilled in math, logics, strategy and anything which requires dexterity (puzzle boxes, kravat - a martial art, the willow way - lorn’s kind of kravat, dancing etc); - he is not ambidextrous, but right-handed; - he can handle insane amounts of pain (as a Red and as a Gold); - he fell on his arse when he first went ridding with Matteo. - in Golden Son he gets important character development: he was driven by his rage for Eo’s and their unborn child’s death, but at that party on Luna and through out the books he realizes that he cannot bring anarchy, because nothing good will come from it, and that there isn’t ‘someone’ responsible for what Reds and other Colors endure, but a whole system;

- Victra had a crush on him; 

- his son’s name means “peace” in Latin;

- Matteo teached him everything about how to act and speak like an Iron Gold, he even teached him how to dress and took care of his appereance (he shaved him from neck down to his toes. Including “there”!);

- although he was badly injured from a year and some in Jackal’s “care”, Mickey was able to carve him again, even making him stronger (he reinforced his ribs so they won’t break if he was shot);

- he was the only one in the history of the Institute (like every Institute in the galaxy) to conquer Olympus and the only one to win the was between Houses with an army of “students” from different houses without the being slaves;

- Andromedus means something to him by Andromeda galaxy being the one Eo pointed at in that garden on Lykos, but nothing at all by being the name of that family the Sons killed in the Asteroid Belt;

- Darrow’s registration number as a Helldiver of Lambda is L17L6363 and it was also used as his registration number in Attica and as Mustang’s password on her datapad;

- only he used the term SlingBlade at The Institute, every other student called him Reaper, because, for them, he was using a Reaping Scythe;

- coincidence or not, The Reaper is also a god which exists in the Red Faith and rules over an infinite Vale and judges those who died;

- he is Howler 1 and Sevro Howler 2; 

- Pierce Brown said that he imagines Darrow has a British accent;

- he can breathe 8 minutes underwater;

- his uncle, Narol, teached him how to dance which proved very helpful when he fought;
