I've seen a good number of people ask a question along the lines of "why do characters like Falin and hate Laios when they're so similar?" and i've also seen good analysis on the differences in how the touden siblings carry themselves that would, despite their shared traits, make a person gravitate to one more than the other.

But i feel like we've overseen one very central thing here.

People don't like Falin

Like... the average person in dungeon meshi doesn't like Falin. She was deeply ostrasized by her home village, in magic school she had zero friends before Marcille and the others generally saw her as strange and a bit offputting.

Characters like Namari and Chilchuck like her well enough but not necessarily more than any other member of their party, including Laios. Neither Kabru nor his party think much of her. The canaries don't give a fuck about her. Toshiro's retainers don't see her as anything else than the weird foreign girl their boss has a crush on.

The reason we think everyone loves Falin is because, despite all the indifferent side characters, the 2 most important and central characters of the story are Laios and Marcille. Who are NOT representative of the average attitudes to Falin! But necromancy georg number 1 and 2 are our main eyes into the story and they love Falin so much that it colours our perspective of the whole world.

The only side character who qualifies as liking Falin and not Laios is Toshiro (at least at first, as he ends the story on much better terms with Laios) and that says a lot about his character, with him drifting to the quiet Falin precisely because of her oddness but being both uncomfortable with and deeply jealous of Laios' much more open expression of that oddness. Because he's a repressed guy from a culture where etiquette is incredibly important.

But like I said, that's a specific aspect of him, not to the world at large.

Because there's also people that click more with laios than with Falin.

Kabru, for one, who is initially distrustful of laios but clearly also deeply fascinated by him and drawn to him.

Minor spoilers, and you don't have to read too deeply into this, because I don't think Kabru particularly dislikes Falin or anything. But it's interesting that when he talks about his distrust of the toudens in ch.32 he's talking about them both. But his big friendship declaration in chapter 76 is aimed squarely at Laios, he doesn't say "you and your sister" he says "you"

And Senshi!! He instantly clicks with Laios, well before he does so with anyone else in the party– who he also becomes friends with, it just takes a bit longer– specifically because they bond over their shared special interest in monsters!! Senshi is kind towards Falin and cares for her wellbeing, but he also... doesn't know her. The reason he is even here, helping to save her, is because he and Laios bonded over monsters and he wants to help his new friends out!

Of course, the theme of neurodivergent isolation is very present in Laios' story. I'm not denying that. He does turn people off, without meaning to and unable to fully understand why! But so does Falin. And just like there are people who like her despite of or even because of those traits, there are people who do the same with him.

In conclusion: "Average person loves Falin and hates Laios" factoid actually statistical error. Average person is neutral on both Falin and Laios. Georcille, Laiorg and Geoshiro, who live in the dungeon and think over 10,000 Falin-loving thoughts a day, are statistical outliers adn should not have been counted.

weird girl!kook is a social outcast amongst her fellow kooks; they didn’t her strange and offputting for her macabre paintings

she loves people watching; it helps her gain inspiration for new paintings, and it’s fun. it gives her an insight on the lives of kildare’s “elite”

her parents are both artists, so she loves to joke that she never stood a chance. one of her mothers works with charcoal and the other is a sculptor so she was surrounded by the limitless potential of expression through art since before she could talk

has two ferrets named ‘asuka’ and ‘shinji’ and they’re her babies. if they’re not rolling around on her bed they’re fighting and she’s constantly having to break them up

she does not have many non artist friends and even her non artist friends are a little artsy in their own way (ie; kiara)

knew of jj before officially meeting at midsummers. she was intrigued by the party animal front he puts up in front of everyone that barely masks his cruelty

wanted to drop out of kildare private academy and focus on her art but her parents convinced her to stay and graduate so she could at least her her high school diploma and when that didn’t work, access to their art supplies

smokes like a fucking chimney. not weed mind you, though she does get her stash from the mainland, cigarettes. she says it helps her think and that it’s good for stress but really she just likes the smell

weird girl!kook finds herself inexplicably drawn to jj after their midsummers meeting. she wants to get to know him but doesn’t want to seem desperate or like a school girl with a crush but her asking around about him isn’t helping

when he corners her asks her about it, she says it’s purely artistic curiosity, he has a good face and she would like to paint him. this inflates his ego to the gods so of course she has to humble him every so often

their painting sessions are something they both end up looking forward to though admittedly they had a rocky start

“why are you naked?”

he smirks at her blatant disgust, “aren’t you gonna draw me like one of your french girls?”

she rolls her eyes and begins packing up her materials. he frowns. “woah what are you doing?”

“if you’re not gonna take this seriously you can go. i can find someone else.”

he picks up his shirt from the floor and covers his lower half. he’s in front of her in mere seconds when she turns back from pack.

he grabs her arm, “hey hey hey okay wait there’s no need for that. i’m sorry.” she looks at him, trying to gage if he’s genuine. she looks down at his hand on her arm, he lets go.

“sorry.” he scratches his head awkwardly, she takes note of this too.

“you said that already.”

his cheeks flush at her bluntness, “yeah um sorry. sorry.” his face somehow grows pinker.

“you’re good.” she unpacks her paints and looks back at him, “well get dressed we’ve got work to do.”

he grins, “yes ma’am.”

she looks down at the arm he grabbed. goosebumps

often home alone because her mothers go to the mainland to sell their art as a kid she hated it but now she’s thankful she doesn’t have to explain why the infamous jackson genrette is sneaking out her room at 8 am

surprisingly not a lightweight, jj finds out the hard way when he tries to challenge her to a drinking game. she knew he was trying to get her drunk to fuck her so of course she hustled him, pretending not to know the rules and struggle in the first round only to kick his ass in the second, third, and fourth round. she ends up carrying him back to hers

her colorful outfits and makeup makes her stand out more than anything but she refuses to change it despite the drawbacks (being perceived) it’s how she expresses herself outside of her art

she hates being the center of attention but loves receiving praise for her art, this double edged sword always strikes when she offers to paint sets and props for school plays. she ends up the talk of the school for a month before she happily goes back to being the outcast

weird!girl!kook doesn’t realize she likes jj until he pulls up to her house in his motorcycle on one of their non-meeting days. he tells her to get dressed cause he just wanted to see her. he convinces her to take him up to the roof so they can look at the stars. he points out every constellation he can find and tells her about his mom teaching him all about them. it’s the softest and most genuine she’s ever seen him

thinks rafe is weird and sketchy but understands why him and jj are friends. rafe thinks she’s weird and sketchy but knows she’s exactly jj’s type. they get along for his sake

has jj saved as ‘my muse’ in her phone. jj has her saved as ‘sexy da vinci’ before he gets serious about her and ‘eye of the beholder’ after they start dating

no one understands how or why they’re together because they’re so different and they don’t seem to like each other, at least that’s what it looks like to outsiders. they still haven’t gotten over that time she called him a dirty dog after he asked her to put her cigarette out on him while he was drunk (she did)

weird!girl!kook who hopes to leave outer banks share her art with the rest of the world and secretly hopes jj will come along

luke pearce is so precious and dear to me but i also think that the game is missing out on the endless entertaining possibilities that open up if they made it so that other regular people find him Weird. like, Strange and Offputting. yes, hes a sunshine boy at first glance, but given the Agent Raven lurking deep within his soul and the fact that i wholeheartedly believe that hes Killed People, it endlessly delights me to imagine other people going "what a lovely young man! however, there is something Deeply Wrong With Him that i cant put my finger on." like, when he smiles, it's so warm and it's so friendly but also on the edge of being dangerous, and it gives people the absolute heebie jeebies. people who go to the antique shop are equal parts charmed and scared, but they cant figure out why. theres just something About Him that screams that he's stared into the abyss and fist fought it and Won. i want some of luke's neighbors to be like "ah right, detective pearce! wonderful fellow, he helped fix my computer but also i wanted him out of my house as soon as possible." and luke is completely oblivious to this. he just assumes people are busy and need to shoo him out real quick. but they know. they may not know the details, but Intuitively, They Know.

I live in Florida. Whenever they talk about manatees or red tide or the effects of a cold snap im like YOOO I KNOW ABOUT THAT!!!

I need yall to understand 🙏 hes part of the fcking ecosystem.

He understands the needs and behaviours and everything about the everglades and its creatures. He knows how to talk to them and they know him and love him. He chooses to go out and help right away with this " I gotcha dont worry about nothing!" attitude

Hes so connected with it and its beautiful-

Its just that sense of community hes got with all the creatures in the everglades that makes me 🥺 hes got such a kind heart and he seems like the person to choose to do something because someone has to yk?

Alot of people would be offput by all the bugs and heat and etc, but he just goes oh well and keeps going along and I think that is SO special

One time my dad and I were on a board walk near a river that had gators in it and there were signs about it too. We saw this??? Fcking guy in a whole business suit with his kid wanting to give a little gator fcking store bought chicken nuggets??? 💀🙏 we like kindly explain uhhh heyyy don't do that cuz u don't want gators to associate humans with food or (gestures broadly to all the many reasons u shouldn't feed wild animals)

And then we continued our walk, but when we turned back we fcking saw a mini crowd (with several small kids leaning THROUGH THE GAP in the railing) surrounding a guy with a kiddie fishing pole trying to??? Idk feed the gator the chicken nuggets.

There were signs about not disturbing the wildlife.

SIDE TANGEANT ASIDE alot of people just aren't in tune with and have like a totally unrealistic and detached from reality expectation of that kinda nature. But ranger marsh (i headcanon that his first name is Rover btw cuz not only is that a flooding guy name but cmon- RIVER MARSH?!!) Is always so patient about explaining that kind of stuff to the others in the show

Hes got an understanding and a system on how to handle things.

He would absolutely take in any stray creature that needs help, he feels like the kinda guy that would've tried to help a wild animal heal up in the garage when they were a kid and everyone else told him not to touch it 🥺

I dont think this guy could keep a secret for the life of him. Like this guy doesn't even realize, he feels like the guy would would see something weird and then go " well ill be i never did see anythin as strange as that before" to a fcking bush or the sky

Jack Benny (To Be Or Not To Be)—The whole joke on the Jack Benny Program is basically about how offputting Jack Benny is. His movies and violin playing are joked to be so bad people want to kill themselves seeing them/hearing it. One of the running jokes is that he's forever thirty-nine which became such a big thing it was even mentioned on The Twilight Zone. That's how weird and strange he is. As for actual movies, in To Be or Not to Be his deal is that he's just a mediocre actor. Personally I love me a bit of a loser and Jack Benny literally embodies that. He's such a funky little guy and I love him so much <3

Patrick Troughton (Jason and the Argonauts)—He's really good as a man beknighted by harpies whose immediate first reaction to being beknighted by harpies is to stuff as much bread down his shirt as possible. Ok. Watched dungeon meshi recently .... and why did noone tell me Falin is also autistic??

Like. Yes yes, all the mob vs laios autism polls are fun, but mob is so much more similar to Falin than Laios -  not just in how their autism manifests, or their personality, but like..... they're even both extremely powerful in their magical fields!! They both see and communicate with ghosts!!! They both ride the line between human and monstrous!!!! I love them so much...

But. If we're talking comparisons, between Mob and Laios...

I really think they're two sides of a coin. None is better than the other, they do vastly different things and are great in their own rights because of it.

Laios is an adult with autism who is surrounded by people who are annoyed by his presence or generally find him strange or offputting. He highlights the struggle of that, how hard it can be to find and keep true friends that actually care about you and aren't lying about just tolerating you when you're neurodivergent - and how even when you have great knowledge or skill in something, just as often it helps you, it will also make people look at you weird. He's loud. He's unapologetic. He's passionate!!! And the right people will come to appreciate that. But it doesn't erase the struggle that being so open often comes with.

Mob's narrative, on the other hand, is a coming of age story. It's about a traumatized autistic kid who isn't open, isn't loud, who makes an effort to not stand out - because he got burnt in the past, and he himself burnt others in the past, as a result of how his autism manifests. And it's about how he comes to realize that coming out of that shell is worth it. That there will be kind people waiting on the other side, that you're not doing anyone any good by ignoring your own wants and needs. That you have good to offer to the world!! That there's good people to meet !!! That you have more strength in yourself than you think !!!! And how even at your most destructive, all your flaws and true colors revealed, mask finally off .... your friends will still love you. Because you were always yourself. Even when you were hiding.

They do different things.

Dungeon meshi is a more realistic story - there's no otherwordly psychic powers amplifying the autistic symptoms present. It's just a weird, wonderful autistic man with his encyclopedia of knowledge and his small gaggle of friends. And the autism may not be absolutely central .. but it's there. Following the story every step of the way, influencing it that way or the other.

Mob Psycho 100 on the other hand is a lot more fantastical, and a lot more idealistic. There's no heavy worldbuilding to dive into, and the monsters and antagonists they face aren't the main course - instead, the main focus is on Mob, and his inner world, and gradually revealing more of it. In that way - while DM is an 'outside looking in' kinda story, mp100 is an 'inside looking out' one.

And I love both of them.

(Keep in mind I haven't read the dungeon meshi manga yet, just watched the anime ;^^ so I'm sorry that there's probably a lot more to add to the comparison on that front. Please don't spoil in the notes tho!!)

My Yandere Neighbor (Manga)

Genre: Comedy/Slice of Life

So this is a translation that we picked up, and while we have five chapters of raws currently, only one of them has been translated and typeset, so we'll be going off of that. The story so far has some yandere action between Kishi and Okada but is overall pretty light, with Okada mostly just being confused and slightly offput by Kishi as of now.

The story starts out with Okada working with Kishi and her being offput by him as he seems to be following and noticing very minute details about how many inches of hair she's cut off of her bangs and that she's sighing more than usual. We learn that Okada has recently been promoted to Art Director and is currently very busy. Kishi can be helpful towards Okada which she appreciates but is still a bit weirded out by her reaction. We get a backstory about how the two meet with Kishi grumbling outside and Okada concerned and bringing him in so they can talk. We find out that Kishi has been mistreated by his boss, as he's made a mistake which caused his boss to severely berate him and forcing him to apologize to everyone. Okada feels sympathetic towards Kishi and his situation and decides to help by talking to her boss about it to get the situation resolved. This leads to Kishi being transferred to her department, allowing him to get a better job and to be closer to Okada, which leads to him just becoming a stalker. We get to Kishi hanging out with coworkers after hours, with them eventually rooting for Okada to look after him after hearing his story. Kishi then goes on an entire thing where he talks about how much he worships her and even ends up following her to the bathroom just to tell her that they were all going to sing karaoke. When it's Okada's turn to sing, Kishi brings an entire boom mic just to record her, though Okada promptly shuts it down. After singing and drinking, Kishi brings her home and he's pretty drunk and she's shocked to find that the two are now neighbors as he's moved in next door.

So already starting out, we can kind of see how the comedy of Kishi and Okada has unfolded, though it doesn't seem like it'll be a very drastic in terms of yandere actions are more of a light comedy type of thing, at least so far considering Okada's attitude. She doesn't seem really scared of Kishi only weirded out by the things that he does and Kishi is at least kind enough respond to Okada when she tells him not to do something like go into the girl's bathroom as well as try to actually help her during her job. This seems like a quirky love that might bloom between them then, along with a lot more comedic moments, though it's hard to judge from the first chapter alone.

Kishi himself seems to be the worshipping type as noted by his own words (and his own imaginations of him), which makes a lot of sense considering Okada basically was able to fish him out of an abusive boss and eventually land him a much better and healthier job. Most of his actions are strange, but relatively harmless, from trying to record Okada's voice while singing karaoke, to knowing what kind of tea she likes, to I guess following her to the bathroom. I imagine as the series continues, these actions will just get more and more bizarre but ultimately harmless and only really affecting Okada's suspension of disbelief. If they wanted to go a more serious route, they could also probably run in the direction of Kishi slowly realizing that Okada isn't as much of a goddess as he thinks she is, treating her more as person as the story goes on, or maybe just continuing the hijinks as they are.

Anyways, I'm curious to see where this series will go after all of this time. Since we're translating it, I would be very happy if you all read it so I can see your reactions.

This is such a nice question. (For the record, my favorite anpanman SIDE characters, so not baikinman, are the kabuki radish, the train, and....old baikinman.)

Now for something i've ALWAYS wanted an excuse to tell you guys...that's actually kind of hard because I run my mouth so often here. BUT, since I made a whole post singing the praises of orbulon (and ashley for some reason), I will thusly use this as an excuse to celebrate my favorite weirdgirl in cartoon history.....

MISS MONA

Miss Mona is a force to be reckoned with. The ultimate bastion of eccentricity, she is unapologetically herself; never will she ever tone herself down for someone else. Even when she is slightly diffident about presenting her "strange" games, she usually follows it up with "i worked hard on these, so you BETTER LIKE IT." And she's right. You better.

Continuing in that vein, she is a connoisseur of all things strange and offputting. Wario is her fashion icon, "moth and beetle larvae" are her favorite animals, and she's made like ten snot-related microgames.

In fact, the beetle and moth larvae should honestly be their own bullet point, because you know how much I fucking love beetle and moth larvae. (i think her favorites are dermestid beetle larvae and woolly bear caterpillars)

The fact that she is so unperturbed by the strange and offputting is also part of what makes her such a damn nice person. Mona is a friend to all. There is no one too weird, too antisocial, or too actively hostile to her personally that Mona will not welcome with open arms. She is a very popular person and that's because she goes so out of her way to make everyone feel included. She is even the first one to attempt the impossible task of befriending Ashley - that alone says A LOT about her character.

That also makes the times when she's not so nice all the funnier and more refreshing. Mona loves Wario, but she also absolutely will not take shit from him. She is always the first to berate Wario for being greedy and selfish, even when she's a little hypocritical about it...

6. She is a Girly Girl, which is not only unusual for this type of character, but also is not tacked-on just because she's a girl; all of her "girly" interests further serve her characterization. She loves fashion because she's so enthusiastic to express herself. She's a cheerleader because she loves intense athletics and yelling really loud. She loves "cute things" because to her a maggot is cute. She's not "girly" because she has to be, it's just a natural progression of her character. And she's OK with that!

8. She is a DAMN HARD WORKER. She's doing all those jobs ON TOP OF being a high schooler, AND her extracurriculars, AND warioware. I always think it's weird when people say that Mona couldn't possibly be a teenager because she drives and has a job, because not only does that not make any sense, but to me she is the quintessential embodiment of an overachieving highschooler. Take a break girl!!!

Ok I wanted to talk about this on my twitter but realized it will appeal to no one so its going here. Being autistic about critter character designs. VERY LONG

Pim/Charlie/Allan/Glep have interesting designs to me like they are some of my favorite character designs possibly in any cartoon cause they're all very well balanced - easy to draw, cute, but slightly ugly also. Well maybe not ugly but certainly not Conventional.

(Glep applies slightly less there, he's just straight up a cute lil guy, how plushies don't exist of him yet baffles me)

I like their slight offputting quirks, like, Allan's spine is visible, Pim's Teeth. They are just strange creatures and I enjoy that. Of course there's also the fact all of their frontfacings (maybe slightly excluding pim's) are just kinda goofy and bizarre looking.

Its just, the choices being made here are really good, okay. They're very appealing lined up, yknow.

The fact they are just kinda cute sometimes makes the expressions being pushed and the weird quirks funnier. If pim was an ugly lil freak all the time it would be less effective when he does that weird awkward toothy laugh. Which brings me to my next "Point" which is like, I really enjoy that they are some of the only critters that arent.... fugly as hell

There are some few exceptions with BG/side characters (just look at amy, shes a pretty gal) but like, most of the side critters that have gotten screentime are very very strange. Allan's landlord is a prime recent example. Look at that guy. Jesus christ.

This is not to say the uglier designs are Bad, quite the opposite, I love when they are hideous <3 But the whole thing is, if the main characters we see every episode were on the same level as them appearance-wise it would get very tired. This is probably like, entry level design stuff for a cartoon, and not very interesting to anyone lol, but with adult cartoons it feels like it can go way too hard on the ugly scale.

Onto the next thing thats been on my mind lately when it comes to critters - I enjoy that their appearances truly are pretty random. Its fun to make things like crittersonas cause like, you can almost do whatever the hell you want lol

I like that some of them just dont feel like wearing clothes, this was talked about by Michael on twitter at some point a few years back I think.

Their hair is a topic that kind of mystifies me lmfao like we see the wiry sparse hair a lot (gnarly, filmore, etc) but then there are characters like amy, pims dad and duncan that have more full human-esque hair. This makes me wonder if its like, randomly possible for some critters to get full heads of hair, or if wigs/hair transplants are a thing, or even if hairloss is just more common which results in the wiry hair later in life. Really NOT important or compelling to anyone but me but I seriously do think about this. Critter Hair Essay coming soon (i'm kidding ............. or am i?)

Also just like, the concept of what critter beauty standards or smth could be sort of interests me, but this is getting incomprehensibly long and stupid anyway, and I would have to be going into heavy Speculation Mode there. so BYE Goodbye

i'm gonna yap about Morbid Minds once again because i can but I just wanna talk about the themes and what I talk about in the story because it may be interesting idk

writing actual people and real life shit

what i try to keep in mind when writing the story is that I want to tell a realistic story about a bunch of weird teens and I will absolutly not shy away from every details that may be seen as taboo or too much

because i feel like we've seen a way too polished version of story about teens like come on, nobody is perfect let them be actual loser, let them say stupid shit, learn from it and do better, let's them be absolute weirdo and get smacked for it, god have you seen high school dudes, they're like fucking menace and they say weird shit all the time, why not show that

plus it's funnier to write character who will say and do unhinged things, why do fantasy writers get a pass in writing morally gray characters but suddenly it looks weird when you do it in contemporary fiction (yeah, i know it hit closer to home and you have to be more careful with what you write, but let's make story about weird people in modern days too you know)

putting outcast on the spotlight (and the neurodivergent experience)

and then there's the obvious reason why I called the story "morbid minds", the fact that I chose to write about character like Marco who are troubled teen, the kind that you wouldn't want to meet in real life, the kid teacher don't want to deal with because they think he's a lost cause

basically the abused victim nobody care about because they're not reacting the "appropriate" way for a victim, the kind that is actually violent and gets into fight, and I feel like people with bad coping mechanism and with a "difficult" personality are either not represented or demonized for having these emotions and not knowing how to deal with them, how about we gave those people a story that treat them with humanity for once

Marco isn't your typical main character because he's basically a bitch and a weirdo, there's a reason why people think he's a school shooter lol some of you guys would probably call him that too if you went to school with him (because we're all capable of being bullies in some ways) but I feel like this makes it more interesting to follow, I mean, people want flawed characters right ? so here you go, have a weirdo who likes guns and beating up people, who can't communicate or hate himself so much he thinks he's not worth loving, have that guy who stalks girls before getting hit with being bisexual and not knowing how to process that information while dealing with toxic masculinity, i mean you get the gist

also, my story relies a lot on neurodivergent and queer experience for example Marco has ADHD but the most notable one are Tristan and Tyler who are autistics

and again, even if we're getting more autistic rep (finally) we're still a long way from the variety of autism experience, that's why I chose to gave some space for my weird autistic and their weirdass special interest lol Tristan often forget that he exists and has a special interest on school shooting, the movie Elephant and had a huge horror phase (creepypasta, horror movies, gore) like of course he sounds more sane than Marco but that's mostly because he went through shit and had to be the bigger person in his own life or else everything would have fell apart, but he's very much as strange as Marco, he's the one that stayed with him after all

Tyler got the actual offputting autism, the one that makes you stare at people with a straight face, the one where people are scared of you because you never smile (but it's just your normal face) he's pretty blunt in all the wrong ways, doesn't social properly and never say the right thing at the right time, he has no shame when he's with people he trusts and can often break boundaries if no one tell him exactly what he's not supposed to do

and all those experience matter to me as a writer because they're all under represented in media because there's really not a lot of neurodivergent stories lol (and also it matters to me as i am also a weird autistic guy, i'm not pulling all of this out of nowhere, i share a lot of traits with Tristan and Tyler, hell even if Marco is the opposite of me he still react a lot like a part of myself that would probably be more unhinged if I wasn't just Tristan IRL)

related to the first point, talking about sex but not in a weird way

this may sounds weird as fuck but it's actually really not, i'm aware i'm writing a bunch of high schoolers but that's also the thing, if you've been in school then you cannot tell me you've never heard guys talk about sex, where are you from, another planet ? because i've seen shit in middle school when i was in 8th grade, and god this was a lot (guys in my friends group talking about hentai, i mean you know those things)

so that's why it's related to the first point, writing real life without filter, but what does that mean exactly ? well apart from not censoring problematic shit a 15 yo guy could say (and boy can a 15 say a lot of bullshit), there's also the fucking fact that Marco who is the main character is a porn addict like i can't just put it under the rug, he has problems with masculinity that leads to sexism and then he also watch porn to fill the void because he has depression, that's like, pretty basic experience actually, you don't know how many people fill the void with sex and stuff like that

when i say all this, it's not to be all weird, i'm ace and I think sex is stupid and everyone makes a huge deal about, so I decided hell, i'm gonna talk about it because it's just,,,, a pretty normal thing most people do, it's not a big deal, some people do that, some people don't, who cares, I think we should have less taboo about it just so people can communicate better, that's what i'm trying to do when i talk about sex in the story

it's just an open conversation between the characters, mostly about putting limits, the characters do get frisky here and there but it's never described, what i do is write the dumb shit it may ensure tho, again, because shit happens, you'll get cum on your shirt and here, you go a funny scene about dumb characters and they get a good laugh about it (and it's both a funny scene and a sweet scene in some ways), i mean it's that easy, idk if i'm clear when i'm rambling about my thoughts process there ?? it's just, man people do that and it's not perfect, let's at least talk about it so people feel less embarrassed about it

i'm improvising everything there, sorry if it sounds messy, but i wanna get back to the putting boundaries stuff, because i feel like it's important to show characters that are both talking about it and also being like "hey let's just wait you know" or stuff like that, it's so simple and i don't think we should make a big deal about it, it's just life and i'm putting it in my story, truly that's how i view it, even if the characters suck at communication they can't just do shit without asking and since they're all awkward about it they just need to fucking talk about it even if it's embarrassing and they don't even know what to say

anyway, let's not make a bif deal about sex, it's just sex, it's gonna happen sometimes, teens have sex, it happens, they just need to be able to talk about it or else it will lead to bad decision making and we don't want that in both the real world and in a story

naahhhh but at least they had like a semblance of their own stories and such. like tbf many of them revolved around men (and thinking about it, realising how many of them it’s on a romantic basis? lol) but at least it felt narratively profound like the crux of millia’s character was that she was an abuse victim with complex feelings about her upbringing (ignoring how they make it weird with her loving zato. but god it sucks.) which is much more resonant than like, here is sol badguy’s wife, but she has amnesia, and the narrative tells us she’s weird and strange but she always acts like a suave sexy babe that’s ready to reassure sol, she’s introduced to kill herself for sol’s sake, and then spends all of strive waffling about whether or not she is sol’s true wife, and she comes to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter because she loves sol so much, and then sol goes into retirement and she loves him so much and lives with him as a tradwife like it’s literally crazy how jacko has no characterisation aside from being WIFE and the game literally refuses to make her even a little bit weird or offputting as to not upset random gooners. i will never forget the war crime of jacko pose challenge.

How I feel about him: ooooh I love him… he’s such an interesting complex character that it’s very hard to pin him down but it gives a lot to think about. He’s also so fucking funny to me esp around season 2 on when he kind of gains more confidence and clarity and loses some of the social anxiety and rules he had for himself and he gets really bold and snippy with people but he’s sort of having fun with it. Going from shaking like a wet chihuahua —> telling people to kys = character development. I also love how offputting he is, I honestly forgot how fucking weird his vibes are, it takes me out when he says something deeply strange and unusual and everyone just looks at him like????

People I ship romantically with him: okay honestly I’m a hannigram purist like sorry they’re soulmates they’re in love what can I say. Like that is THE guy for him THE one. It feels like watching titanic or Romeo and Juliet or whatever and shipping them with someone else, like that’s what it’s all about! The whole show that relationship is the driving force, the whole point! So I can’t really see him fr fr with anyone other than his stupid bitch ass lame high maintenance prissy little husband. THAT being said. I sort of enjoy reading him and Fredrick just because it is part of my canon that Fredrick sort of has a down bad crush on him and honestly I sort of love that silly little muppet of a man. He’s such a pathetic #failgirl and it charms me.

Non romantic otp for him: the Jack and will friendship gets me sometimes. Like they both fuck each other over a bit in their own ways but there’s such intimacy of everything they’ve gone through and some of the quiet moments when they sit together really hit hard. It’s tragic because they really do love each other but it’s never going to be enough, they’re being pulled too hard in opposite directions

My unpopular opinion about this character: I feel like people baby-ify him slightly too much and I think they lose a lot of depth from the show and the themes by doing so. Like yes he’s a victim and goes through a lot and has deeply sweet and kind traits but in other ways he sort of sucks. Like to have a full understanding of the character I feel like you sort of have to acknowledge the ways he sucks and has the capacity for cruelty and selfishness and is often manipulative, a liar, a hypocrite, etc. and some of that is brought out by hannibal, yes, but some of that is all him. Buried deeply by learned social behaviours but in some ways when we first meet him he has a person suit just like hannibal. I think people are too quick to categorize him as ALL a product of hannibal, but I think hannibal saw a lot of what was already there and sized him up and that’s what drew his interest. It’s interesting he also has a lot of things he resents or holds against hannibal but the murder/cannibalism often seems to just not be one of them? Like he’s a little TOO okay with it sometimes. There’s a part of him that genuinely thinks it’s delightful and funny when hannibal makes a stupid pun about killing and eating someone and that’s all him, baby. Nobody made him like that. And that’s why they’re made for each other lol.

One thing I wish had happened in canon: I wish he had gotten to actually beat hannibal up a bit outside of fantasies. I think it would have been healthy for him. Also I think hannibal would have liked it lol.

How I feel about him: Augh Augh Augh he’s my specialist boy 💕 god he’s just. He’s so charming and handsome and sweet and funny what can I say what can I say. I’m entranced by his autistic mannerisms and the weird little ways he thinks about things and sees the world. He’s the most dateable member of the 4077 imo. He’s got so much love to give…

All the people I ship romantically with him: number one is Hawkeye!! They’re just so oughhhh….there’s just some aspects of how radar is with him that I can’t interpret any way other than having some romantic/crush element. I also think he’s very good for Hawkeye, they sort of balance each other. He’s the dog they keep with the cheetah to keep it from going insane. He takes care of him. And Hawkeye just so clearly adores him. It’s also very juicy for angst bc there is the kind of angst between them of two people who feel very deeply especially when it comes to each other and often butt heads about it. THAT being said honestly I love reading about him with anyone- trapper, klinger, Margaret, random one episode characters, etc. I do think there’s a bit of something there with bj too but I have trouble shipping him with people bc I just can’t see him cheating on his wife or divorcing so like. Shippable on a feelings level but I can’t see it actually happen. But I do think Hawkeye is kind of his love.

My non romantic otp with him: Henry and radar is so… Augh. I miss them. It was so cute when they used to be a little duo and do things in coordination.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I feel like people treat him as an innocent baby and it’s like. That is a grown man. I get how he acts sometimes but honestly I think he’s going to act the same way and be just the same as a 40 year old man I think he’s just like that lol. Esp bc other characters the same age as him are clearly grown adults idk I think he’s just shy and socially awkward and likes some things people consider immature and good for him for being true to himself! Naivety too I think he’s just sort of like that inherently. But yeah that is a grown man he has gotten drunk many times on the show he’s been varying degrees of sexually active he was smoking a cigar he is in a war zone carrying near corpses and bringing them glasses of water and taking care of the whole 4077 in his own way, the weight of that on his shoulders. I also think you have to acknowledge the bad with the good and that not only does he definitely know what sex is, he’s kind of a creep sometimes. But like, they’re all flawed characters he’s no worse than Hawkeye who also sucks in that regard! But ignoring flaws makes them feel too one dimensional to me.

One thing I wish had happened in canon: I wish we had seen him and Hawkeye talking/bonding post Abyssinia Henry/welcome to Korea, about the grief of both losses, since esp before bj really settles in, they were both the closest people they had to each other

[Four Years and an Anime, Baby!!!]

Note: For the sake of this review series, I'm going to avoid any overt references to the later events of the manga. Anything I have to say on that topic will be relegated to their own posts, so anime-onlys can read these too if they're so inclined

And we're off to a great start!!!

Easily the thing that I'm most excited about is the new intro, expanding on To You, From Me (Fuuko's manga, for those who didn't catch the name), which we got basically no information on in the original. I do think it's a little odd that the scene we saw doesn't resemble the one Fuuko is seen reading pretty much at all, but I do like what David Production is going for with it

As a long-time fan, I thought that intro was really cool, and bodes well for how David plans to adapt the manga going forward, likely expanding on or adding scenes that weren't present in the manga to help build atmosphere or context. However, my roommate, who is completely unfamiliar, was strongly confused and taken aback by the strange animation and surreal imagery, so I worry that this addition may be offputting to newcomers. Fingers crossed everyone can overlook that

Aside from that, the beats of chapter 1 are pretty much intact, though a lot of it was sadly truncated or removed for the sake of streamlining to fit the half-hour timeframe, which is to be expected even if it is a bit of a shame. I really loved Andy testing the limits of Unluck, keeping careful track of the relative size of the debris based on how long he touched Fuuko, but in the interest of time, skipping that and keeping the note about how it works is serviceable I suppose

I also think it's a little weird to have Andy and Fuuko alone at the bridge rather than drawing a crowd, especially since they're in such a crowded city, though I'm sure it's more cost-effective to only use the characters who matter instead of animating a bunch of nobodies milling about and being voiced by however many extras would be required. It picks up the pace, and gives way to a very funny reinterpretation of the events of the manga with Andy simply rocketing his head back to where he started instead of Fuuko going to the ground to inspect what she'd done

The most important moments, being the meeting, the haircut, and the battle, were all executed spectacularly, so the connecting moments in between being less than stellar is perfectly acceptable. I don't have any trouble believing that people will enjoy themselves watching this and be engaged enough to continue on

Andy's animations were very fluid and imaginative, I particularly loved the touch of him floating the knife on a jet of his blood rather than just balancing it on his finger while letting himself bleed. The blood on Andy's teeth evaporating after Fuuko stabbed him was also a great way to indicate how Undead works, whereas in the manga his teeth are just mysteriously clean a few panels later, potentially misleading readers into thinking that it's a continuity error. Oh, and Andy's body vanishing after he tosses his head to Fuuko? It's so clear that someone on this team is familiar with the source material, adding details that would logically be present even if the author didn't portray them in the original, which is great because Tozuka is already extemely detail-oriented

I will admit, I am not the biggest fan of the voice actors. I've never really liked Yuichi Nakamura too much, and I just don't think he's the best fit for Andy specifically. Moe Kahara is a pretty new actress, I believe, and she just sounds kind of...unrefined, I guess? I'm sure she'll grow on me, or she'll get more experienced and give a stronger performance as she goes, so I'm not going to write her off, I just thought she sounded a bit generic here. Whether that's a matter of skill or direction is also debatable, so again, I'm not going to rag on her too much

The opening theme, though played without the visuals as per usual with first episodes, sounded rad, and I'm super excited to see the full thing next week. I'm sad that I have to wait for it, but I'm more than happy enough with the episode itself that I don't mind

Overall, though I obviously have to say that the corresponding manga chapter is better, I greatly enjoyed the first episode and highly recommend it both to newcomers because it does a solid job in and of itself and to manga fans because it provides a nice new perspective on the source material. I'm pretty hard to please with this sort of thing, or rather pretty easy to disappoint, so for me to walk away with a strongly positive attitude is a huge mark in this adaptation's favor

Not only am I still excited to see how this anime goes going forward, my confidence in how well it's going to present the story I love so much has only gone up, so I can't call this episode anything other than a rousing success for me. I hope you all enjoyed it too, and I can't wait for episode two!!!

I’m trying to find this cool analysis post I read like… a year or so ago, about Ghirahim’s queer coding. It was a fascinating read, particularly because I loved OP’s take on his sort of fangless sexuality. He’s designed to mimic an ice skater, he’s played as a flamboyant gay man, and yet it’s kind of… directionless? We’re all familiar with how it feels like he’s coming on to Link- but he isn’t. He’s being threatening, being intimidating, in a way the devs thought would be offputting or even repulsive, and sort of aping… not even sexuality, but sensuality. There is no desire in the way he acts, which makes sense for a sword, but in some ways it makes his queer coding a lot crueler. He’s gay in the way frilled lizards are “big”.

Taking it as is, though, it makes writing him pretty interesting, because from a Watsonian perspective I kind of wonder what would make Ghirahim come to the conclusion that mimicking human sexuality would come off as a threat. He’d have to pick up the idea somewhere, while inventing his personality after Demise gets locked away.

He loves his body, genuinely, and does like to show off, but for example the Tongue Thing is very much meant to be off-putting as opposed to a display of how pretty he is. It kind of felt jarring in-game precisely for that reason, to me. Ghirahim is a weird guy for many reasons that make sense in-character, and flailing his tongue around like an eldritch five-year-old doesn’t really fit with his early game persona as a refined lord OR his later more obvious bloodthirstiness. The man might be full of whimsy but I wouldn’t exactly call him playful.

If anything, I think he’s characterized a lot by being lonely. He’s been isolated from the center of his world, his lord and master and god, for so long he had to cobble together a facsimile of being a person. Based on his enthusiasm, I think he even learned to like being a person in the same way Fi does over the course of the story. But, like Fi, he is also fundamentally a weapon whose purpose is to be useful. So he’s vicious, uncompromising, determined- until his path crosses with someone who is, on a technicality, on the exact same journey. Link is also a stranger in a strange land, chasing down clues to find the light of his life, his closest companion and god. I can see why Ghirahim would want to keep him around. That choice, however, is the choice of a person. Not a weapon. And that’s what kills him in the end.

Ghirahim dying because he committed to the bit so hard he became a real boy is funny in a very tragic way.
