This is the continuation of this, which was inspired by this. Swiss' perspective this time ! Also, again : Swiss is hard on himself in this, but he's biased and it doesn't reflect what I actually think of him (he's my favorite ghoul, i love him to hell and back)

Swiss twirls his fork between his fingers absent-mindedly, eyes trained on Mountain. He's talking about books with Cirrus and Rain, gesturing widely with an excited grin, plate long forgotten in front of him. Swiss bites back a wounded sound at the sight.

Oh, Swiss was doomed from the start. He never could have resisted the earth ghoul, not in a hundred years. There is something so grounding about Mountain, something that has Swiss hanging to his every words whenever the earth ghoul's voice rises, something in his very presence that quiets Swiss' otherwise constantly racing thoughts, turning them into a distant buzz. How can someone be so good, so sweet, while also being a creature from hell, sin running through his veins ? Swiss doesn't have an answer for that particular question.

Mountain is just...everything Swiss isn't, and will never be. Level-headed and rationnal where Swiss acts on impulse, serene in a way Swiss can never be, the urge to move and act always jostling him forward. Watching Mountain offer potted plants to all of them with a shy smile, carry a ghoul who fell asleep on the couch to their bed, let anyone stay at the greenhouse while he works and hums songs whenever they might need it, lend his huge knitted sweaters and comfy hoodies to everyone who asks, makes something hurt in Swiss' stomach.

How dare he, overbearing, too present, restless Swiss, always trail after the wonder that is Mountain ? How dare he disturb the earth ghoul's peace with his incessant rambling, his attempts at jokes, his too loud laughter ? Guilt swirls inside of him whenever he interrupts something Mountain is doing, even if he never says anything, just puts down whatever he had in hands and tilts his head toward the multi ghoul, ears twitching and lips curling in a smile to indicate he's listening.

Swiss doesn't deserve the peace that fills him when Mountain is around, how could he when he shatters the earth ghoul's own, when he's so wrong and too much, when he takes up so much space and has nothing positive to give in return ?

Mountain is simply too sweet, doesn't deserve the hurricane that Swiss brings with him. And yet, Mountain seeks his presence, comes to him and listens intently to the words flowing out of the multi ghoul's mouth. Swiss doesn't understand why, but it seems to help, and he'd do anything for Mountain.

A soft touch against his chin snaps Swiss out of it. Mountain wipes something on his skin with his thumb, eyes soft and warm, calloused fingers so very gentle on his face. Swiss's heart misses a beat.

Not to be That Guy but like.

Am I the only one that can't stop thinking about how Tianlang-Jun says about Luo Binghe that he pretends to be cold-hearted like his mother. The hint of fondness there, the heartache in that utterance.

Like it drives me absolutely insane. Imagining her putting on a front of strength, cold and driven and unrelenting. Why does TLJ say that about her. Did she secretly look for solutions that meant reconciling with demons instead of hurting them when her sect wasn't looking? (I wonder this because I feel like his weird fondness for SQQ would lowkey track if it's connected to the woman he once loved.) Did he mean that she was tasked with basically assassinating him and she fell in love with him instead (re: failed step one)? Did he mean that she was fond and doting in her own way (e.g. conceding he was attractive, paying for his exploits and humoring him)? Did he mean that, like LBH, she thought that power would be the thing to protect her--and that it was disguising a person who was deeply and privately wounded? All four????? I don't need sleep I need a n s w e r s

Did she know about the Huanhua Palace Master's skeevy ass intentions before she met TLJ? Or did those only come to significant light after she fell in love with TLJ? Is that why she never anticipated that level of betrayal, because initially she had no intention of being with anyone romantically? And HHPM just assumed she would be under his thumb forever?? Was she furious at her own indiscretion or did she try to use the pregnancy as a bargaining chip, a way to try to stop the immortals of Cang Qiong Mountain from attacking TLJ (plus the bonus of marriage entrapment no takesies backsies this is where LBH gets it from)? Did she try to use that claim on her to dissuade HHPM from his covetous advances, framing herself as tainted so that she could finally escape? Did she dream of a life by TLJ's side, far away from Cang Qiong Mountain?

Like. Literally every single permutation of what this could mean guts me to hell. Do you ever just cry about tianxi because I--[loud bawling noises]

Remember when they stole a tank in Six of Crows?

I have not seen enough people talking about that one scene in Six of Crows where Inej, Jesper, and Wylan steal a tank. It is probably my favorite scene in the entire book and I am going to talk about it.

The chaos. The gremlin-ness of all of them. Jesper being so excited to drive the tank. Wylan and Inej manning the turret and laughing their asses off. The tank dragging a dirty, soot-stained banner that says “Fjerdan might” behind it. The poetic revelry and beauty that they all see in the complete and utter destruction they leave in their wake.

The way Nina, Matthias, and Kaz react when they see the tank. Nina starts shouting for joy. Matthias is in so much shock he just does not speak for a minute. Kaz is, and I quote, “grinning like an idiot,” which is one of the only times we see him really truly smile, and it’s an enormous, insane, excited grin. Kaz immediately denies being happy at all and keeps grinning at the tank.

Inej and Wylan popping out of the top and waving to them before blowing up the bridge.

Plus, this is one of the only times we see these characters laugh so much and be so overtly joyful. Wylan laughs so hard his stomach hurts. Kaz is grinning like a little kid. Inej has just bested her abuser and is riding the high of that and of firing a massive gun with Wylan.

And it gives us little snippets of dynamics that aren't focused on as much, like Kaz and Matthias or Inej and Wylan.

Truly one of the most chaotic, hilarious, and fun moments in the entire duology. It’s right up there with Kaz and Wylan crashing through Van Eck’s ceiling and onto a full dinner table to escape the guards, in my opinion.

Anyway I love this scene and we should talk about it more. 1000/10, will continue to re-read forever
