merlin’s secret being a visual thing. when he is around arthur or gwen or leon or morgana or [insert whatever character here] merlin seems pale and thin, almost like a ghost or an apparition. when the sun lands on him he reflects it like a corpse, he eyes seem dark and dull. he has this ethereal beauty to him, this otherworldly visage that leads many to believe he is of fae blood. he just doesn’t seem to be 100% human. but when he is ONLY with lancelot or gaius (cough or gwaine bc gwaine DEFINITELY knew) merlin is heartachingly human. merlin shines in the sunlight, colors are brighter and more vibrant around him, and his smiles are wide and his laughs are boisterous. he takes on color and leaves everyone wanting to know him. but when other join in or interact with the two, merlin shifts before their eyes so quickly and suddenly that they aren’t sure whether or not what they saw was a trick of the light. the idea still leaves them wanting more and wanting to see the merlin who is just so full of life but that merlin only appears for a small select group of people. merlin who has a guard so high that it has an effect of other’s perception of him.

what made you decide on the bigger changes, like reiner being black, saerys having red marks, lennox being a faerie, faeries having gem eyes...
Rule of cool, baby!
I'm fully indulgent when it comes to redesigns or my own takes on a story's concepts. I love worlds with fantasy creatures, especially when they're something a little different from humans + pointed ears.
For demons, I was inspired by both the unique patterns in other animals like goats, the fact human skin has invisible patterns, and the tattoos Saerys gets when he unlocks his more demonic form. It serves as a bit of foreshadowing for his demon form and gets to add to Saerys' feeling of being "marked" as an outsider from everyone else.
The fairies being sparkly with gemstone eyes is fully because SPARKLES! I am a magpie and love shiny textures and bizarre fantasy eyes. Lennox being made a fairy is because I wanted to add some more non-human diversity to the generals, and everything we learn about fairy magic being powered by community connections suits him perfectly for having corrupted it. It's hard to see, but Lennox's eyes are actually a little cracked to highlight it further.
Then Reiner being black is just because I enjoy colouring a diverse range of skinstones and originally the darkest character was Altea's father, followed by Caligo and Ishara. I thought adding some darker-skinned characters would look nice, and it generally suits Reiner's design with the strong golds and reds.
(I still want to see if I can balance out the skintone range as things go on)

[Start ID. A digital drawing of the Artificer from Rain World. They're in midair, black smoke curling around them after two explosive leaps, tossing a spear at one of the two Scavengers on the faraway ground and readying a grenade with their other hand. She's snarling with her mouth wide open, exhaling short puffs of smoke, its throat glows. Scars litter its body, shrapnel and burns and nicks from spears, hands darkened from throwing bombs. The background is solid-color, dull red, but there's a ladder and scattered spears and rubbish in the distance The drawing is completely taken up by a first-level karma symbol, which casts a bright, gold light upon the parts of the image it overlays. End ID.]
