Tips for writing and drawing amputee characters: Stump Scarring

This was something I had originally intended to mention in this post but felt it deserved its own separate post.

A lot of people, when drawing and designing amputee characters, draw their characters with these big, gnarly looking scars all over the stump. I get why people do this, but in reality, most amputees have stumps that look more like this:

The only scarring that is inherent to amputation (meaning most amputees have) is a very thin line right at the tip of the stump that comes from where the stump was sewn shut. After 5-10 years though, these thin incision scars will fade to be nearly invisible in most folks other than the indent it usually leaves in the skin.

Of course, there are exceptions! My own legs are covered in heavy scarring like the pictures below.

but typically, you only see this in amputees who lost their limb in ways that required them to also need skin grafts, such as from a burn (fire or acid), gangrene, some types of rapid-onset sepsis, or particularly brutal animal attacks.

For context, I used scars from meningococcal as reference here.

I think this is another reason a lot of people, particularly in 2D comics and animation, cover their amputee character's stumps, because they think all amputees have scars like the ones in the second image and I'll be honest, that's a lot to draw when you're drawing it over and over again, but unless your amputee also needed skin grafts bcuase of their injury/illness, their stumps will look more like the first images.

Fun fact: on particularly pale skin, scars can change colour depending on temperature. scars have less circulation and the blood vessels are closer to the skin, which means if you don't have a lot of melanin, your scars can turn a grey-ish purple colour like so:

This information is brought to you by an especially pasty white person in the southern hemisphere (where it's winter atm) who's scars haven't seen the sun since june lmao.

A quick final note: If you look up "burn scars" or any other similar type of large scarring on google a lot of what you get are fresh scars, so they're going to look different than the ones here. On pale skin, large scars like the ones above start out very dark red and will fade to look more like the images here. The same is true for dark skin, typically fresh scars will be much darker in colouration and will fade to be closer to the natural skin tone with time, though on both, they will always be very visible. Some types of scarring on darker skin tones can cause the skin to become lighter, but they don't usually turn entirely light pink like I've seen some folks draw. This is why it's so important to look up references of the type of scar your character has AND how that looks on their skin tone.

And as always, listen to POC and seek out the recourses specifically made by them, especially if you're drawing characters with darker skin tones. Their lived experience will always beat my "what I found through internet research and from talking to friends"

So ! My ocs. I guess I'll do an overall explainer for the overall groups. If you check out my Toyhouse (LINK!) there's a bunch of folders up top that are how I categorise them. It's primarily by universe except for the folders that are just "misc."

So folder 1: Blatant favouritism:

These are silly little guys that don't fit in any specific wider universe, but I really really like. So I'll spotlight the two important ones before i get real in the weeds with my main universe.

In here are notably, my Fursona (self explanatory), Ali and Pittsburgh Cincinnati. There's also Hauntkit and Clearpelt who are warriorcats ocs that *is dragged away by airport security*

... So, Pittsburgh, lovingly sometimes called pissbug, is a weird little Thing who I made as like, an homage to characters like happy bunny and Sweetypuss. She (and her weird dog) exist to stand next to strange and offputting captions. I love her. No further context. She's just silly. and violent.

Now. Ali.

Ali Alighieri has thoroughly stolen the show, and also ties into the next folder along, Making Your MK.

With over a hundred extra images compared to second place (Sorry, Tabitha). Ali is my fucked up little scrunkly. My little baby guy. They're a shared character of mine and @samhainian's, and is from their Creature Feature setting (A modern fantasy setting wherein Cryptids and Magic are real but in our modern world.) They are as such, a modern human young adult... Who is also a demon + magic user.

Strange little pansexual altersex genderqueer poetry-nerd that they are... The modern setting also means they are literally just a tumblr user. A fellow countryman, so to speak.

HOWEVER.... Ali's true origin was in *Purrgatorio*, a scrapped visual novel of mine set in the MYMK universe! They were simply retrofitted into CF as the joke with Purrgatorio was that a regular human had mysteriously just shown up in MYMK's pure-furry setting.... And then when we scrapped the project we got all attatched to our little not-so-blank-slate protagonist. But I'll put a pin in Purrgatorio for later.

Making Your MK.

Okay so here's the big one. The setting with.... (looks at spreadsheet) 109 characters not including so-called incidentals. At time of writing.

MYMK is home to... Multiple stories. As you would hope when a setting has 100+ characters. I'd wager each story has about 10-20 relevant characters tops but with a big shared universe like this there gets to be overlap between casts!!! Yay !!! 😊😊😊

MYMK is the name of the main story in the setting. Pronounced "Making your Mark", it is centered around Markus Felidae (The purple one) and their family. It's very action-adventure-y. It's also the plot I'm most secretive about the backend of since I WILL!!!!! Turn it into a nice prose story with pictures SOMEDAY!!!!! But for now tee hee hee secrets secrets. Markus' family is strange and ragtag and is keeping something from them... I can't ramble on too long here unless further prompted in asks about specifics but!!! Everyone in the MYMK folder has a fully furbished little profile with a blurb about them. So if you're curious....

But yeah, I tend to think of the MYMK setting more in terms of its Locations than its Casts, due to the overlapping nature of them all. The Malbranche may be the villains of the main plot, but they're also major players in relation to The Palsgrave who are the antagonists of Moraine, etc etc,

The country everything in MYMK is set in is called New Orphidian, Southern hemisphere little thing, here's a very cartoony map of it.

Cliffside is situated on a big ol' Cliff.

A tiny hamlet of a place, it used to have reason to exist, and now does not. It's not even a good tourist locale, as the cliff is much too dangerous compared to the nicer tourist spot of Welkin just a little north. Not to mention nearby Moraine's allure as a tax haven with no labour laws place where a bunch of TV and Movies are filmed!

It's where most of MYMK's main cast reside (except the antagonists from the Big City Varmonte), and is as such a location I have a lot of tiny little worldbuilding thoughts about :)

I won't go into the other locations here just because then this post will SUPER get away from me but... I think most importantly for Cliffside right now...

Is that it's where Purrgatorio is set. Yes, that VN I said got scrapped. It's not dead. It is in fact serving it's original intended purpose as "A (mostly) noncanon exploration of character voice and setting"

It's back and its prose babeyyyyyyy!!! (A BUNCH OF THE EARLY STUFF IS ME BEING SUPER RUSTY ... BE WARNED)

Purrgatorio is currently the most publicly available coherent work I have out of my ocs! It's very low-stakes and serves mostly to bash my toys together and see what character dynamics come out, but you can look if you want to!

(There's also a whole THING on the meta of its Canonicity... It's not canon, but it's also not NOT canon. But if I talk about Metanarrative Timeline Collapse in my normal mundane non-magic setting im gonna sound bonkers ✌)

Ali's dynamics with the MYMK cast are so goddamn funny to me. Like I literally just handed my OCs some ET shit but ET is a sexually repressed tumblr user with a mood disorder.

But yeah I don't think I can coherently string together much more about MYMK without just actually explaining THE WHOLE PLOT.... Though I will absolutely elaborate on any given character's Whole Deal if i'm prompted. (OH MY GOD I DIDNT EVEN TALK ABOUT CHROME AND TABITHA. WAIT. OKAY THERE'S. OK NO IF I TALKED ABOUT THEM IT'D JUST END UP AN ESSAY ,SORRY..)

and Monster of the Week... Is currently being revamped! It used to be a modern world setting with hidden magic, now it's going to be more... Adventure Time-y. Fantasy world get iphone. Yknow. It has a lower Age Rating than MYMK's "anything goes", as it started as a Pitch Bible Project in my animation class. They're a little neglected but I still love them :) The revamp is extemely recent and not reflected in any of the art/writing yet but I'm workin on it. It still doesn't have a proper title..... OTL

So yeah!! Uh. This wasn't as comprehensive as I was hoping but it turns out I have way, WAY too many thoughts on my guys. And no idea what to do when im actually asked about them so !!!! This was not a very coherent ramble but it was a ramble !

There's things like essays on Chrome and Tabitha (Link) and also The Queer Gender Identities Of The Whole Cast (Link) hiding around on my toyhouse, and once again, Purrgatorio (Link) serves as my sandbox for playing with how these characters act in situations.

But..... ! I did try to make my toyhouse approachable for the average layman. Every character in the MYMK folder (Link) has a *blurb* of information, rather than a giant wall of text explaining everything about them. I want people to be able to understand their general vibe at a glance rather than be overwhelmed.

In any case ???? Uh. Fun game for everyone: If you know your homestuck classpect, every single MYMK character has a classpect and lunar sway. and a birthday. Try and find your andrew-hussie assigned kin! As a Prospitian Witch of Heart, I share my classpect and lunar sway with Chrome. No I don't know what this means. It worries me honestly he's kind of an asshole.

Greetings everyone, I hope you are all faring well in the colder weather - unless you live in the southern hemisphere of course.

I am here to announce a slow return to tumblr, which means you will see me lurk around with my regular handle @rebelienne. In terms of this blog however; I will start replying to some of the messages in my inbox. First and foremost I will be working on answering questions and thoughts directed at me, requests and questions for characters will come later on.

And to tide you over somewhat, here is my current WIP list;

Two instalments of "If These Walls Could Talk", one focusing on Corin and here wine-making, and the other about Demetri being traumatised.

The fourth chapter of "Snowfall", a preview of said chapter was reblogged yesterday I believe. This chapter will once again give Caius the scare of his life.

There is also Felix's backstory that has been sidelined three times now due to personal tragedies. What genuinely irritates me about this one is the fact that I know exactly the structure, flow and where I wish to take it - life just tends to get in the way.

That is all I have to report on for the time being, once again; I am glad to see so many of you still stick around to watch the corpse of Volterran-Wine slowly rot... because that is how I have felt about myself and the blog the last year or so. I care for you all, have a wonderful rest of you're day.

The Moon in TDP

i started making this post because i was reading ttm and got confused wrt how moon phases work in the dragon prince universe. then tumblr deleted it, and now that i'm attempting to rewrite it i'm realizing that it's a pretty long post to make just to point out a mistake in some panels. so yeah the panels in ttm show the moon phases in the wrong direction but if you're interested in looking at the moon throughout tdp regardless then it's under the cut.

also i may or may not be convinced that their calendar isn't based on the moon, i'll explain a bit in the end

Alright so as we all know, the series starts on the night before the full moon. this is also when callum says he will be 15 in two months, keep that in mind for later. to keep this convenient for myself i'm going to count days the way jewish months work, i.e the new moon is the first of the month and the full moon is the 15th. so by this system, the night when rayla doesn't kill marcus is the 14th (of whatever month). this, as i learned, does not mean that they count the days of the month according to the moon. but for now we are.

the eventful night that kicks off the events of the series is, of course, a full moon.

the next time we see the moon is in the next episode, after the encounter with amaya at the banther lodge. this episode takes place on the next day, the 16th as far as we're concerned. the moon now is at a waning gibbous, which leads to the conclusion that they are in the northern hemisphere (this is all under the assumption that their world operates the same way earth does).

for reference:

so, from now on i will be referring to the moon phases as they are seen in the northern hemisphere.

the next time the moon makes an appearance is in episode 9, at the cursed caldera. it is now close to its last quarter. date-wise i would say this is the 21st based on the moon's appearance, which callum confirms in the next episode when he says it has been a week since they left katolis.

we are now on season 2, at the moon nexus, and the moon is at its last quarter.

and here is the moon again in episode 2, between its last quarter and a waning crescent. also i really just wanted to look at the moon nexus

here is bait with the moon in episode 7, and again when callum and rayla cross the moonstone path, at a waning crescent nearing its end.

the next time we see the moon again we're in the midnight desert, and it's a waxing crescent. looking at it, i would say this is the 5th-6th of the following month.

interestingly, the moon doesn't appear again until we're at the storm spire, and it's full. which suggests it had taken rayla and callum approximately 10 days to travel there from the midnight desert. it also marks one month since the events of the first episode.

and here is the final moon appearance in tdp, the day after.

now we get to ttm, in which rayla very conveniently tells us the new moon is 3 days away. this puts us in the 27th-28th of this month, two weeks (more or less) since the events of the finale. phoe-phoe is reborn on the night of the new moon. callum comes up with the plan to open the portal on the full moon, and this is where the aforementioned mistake happens - the panels show the moon phases in the wrong direction (unless the moon nexus was somehow transported to the southern hemisphere).

anyhow, we get to the full moon. bad things happen. and rayla leaves.

two months after the events of the first episode.

on callum's birthday.

this fact was confirmed on reddit back in 2020, and then again in the season 4 premiere. interestingly though, callum's birthday in the season 4 premiere is very clearly not on a full moon. it's a waxing gibbous, a day or few before the full moon.

so what does this mean? a few options:

the calendar in tdp is not based on the moon. like the gregorian calendar, for instance - today (october 29th) is the 4th day since the new moon, which means the moon is at a waxing crescent. this doesn't mean it will look the same way on october 29th next year. i found it confusing, because they only seem to talk about the passage of time on the show in terms of moon phases, but who knows. this theory is also supported by something claudia says in the s4 premiere - "to be clear it's 30 days. just so you don't think it's a 31 day month." months in lunar (and lunisolar) calendars are either 29 or 30 days, as opposed to 30 or 31. (and thank you @bisexualkingdavid for pointing this out)

moonshadow elves do count the days of the month according to the moon (as evidenced by rayla saying the new moon is in 3 days), but katolis doesn't.

there isn't a consistent lore and i'm reading too much into it (seems unlikely given the nature of the show).

so. this was me being productive with my time. hopefully some of you found this interesting, and if not, well i had fun. and maybe this will get cleared up in future episodes.

Jokes aside, I know what you mean. XD Especially this time of year, with exams, the holidays, the winter (if you live in the nothern hemisphere, if you're in the southern hemisphere you're roasting), the end of another (pandemic, sigh) year. Most people are extra busy at school and/or work.

For me, I need two things: sleep and a priority list.

A good night's sleep comes first. Yeah, I can do a whole lot sleep deprived. Would probably even do a good job too, but I'm going to be pissed the entire time. XD For me to feel satisfied and happy with what I'm doing, I need to sleep.

Second, I would make a priority list. What's the most important? What do I need to pay attention to first? When I was at university, school came first above all else. I received a full scholarship to attend, so my education had to be finished within four years - I did not have any money to complete my degree if I couldn't graduate on time. Told my friends and my relationship at the time, "Yo, we can hang out after exams, but until then I have to do everything I can to get the best grades." They were all around my same age. Most were in a similar boat, so it was easy for them to understand.

Nowadays, I have work. It's more of a balance now, because work has vacation / sick time. I'm free to take time off if I need to. Also, work doesn't need my soul in it (LMAO). It's me, so of course I work incredibly hard and stand out, but I'm not here bending over backwards for my boss (unless my boss was Yoongi or JK, what's that? shut up? right, right, back to advice).

I always feel best after sleeping and knowing what I have to do. Take it task by task. Yeah, it's a lot, but when is it not, right? Celebrate each accomplishment. Play your favorite BTS song, eat a nice treat, drink some hot chocolate (or another fun drink) and enjoy it before getting back to work. When you have smaller goals to work towards, it won't feel so tiring or overwhelming. One by one, things will get done and then you'll suddenly realize...

"Oh? I'm a useless potato, but I did the thing! Now I'm just a potato!"

(potatoes are delicious and you can do so much with them, mmm, what? stay on topic? sigh, okay, okay)

You just gotta start with the little wins. It'll slowly turn into a big win and you'll start feeling more capable again. Don't worry too much about being "the best", but rather think "I just want to try and be a little better than I think I can be" and if you are, awesome! And if not, you were the best version of yourself at the time, but there's always the future, so don't be too hard on yourself.

With relationships, it's different. Depending on who it is, they know you or you have to communicate. Sometimes all you gotta do is say, "I'm feeling like shit." If they know you well, they'll help you out. (Also, help them out when they need it too!) If not, just let them know what you need from them. "Give me some space and time to study. Then we can hang out when I take a break." It's important to verbalize your needs and communicate in all relationships. Let them know what's going on. It is what it is. Don't try to compare or think you "should" feel something else.

(we don't have time for that and your feelings are valid, I promise, no I'm not making dirty jokes for once, sheesh, I have some restraint besides handcuffs...!)

Make a little time for your hobbies too. It's fine to read some smut stories, watch YouTube, etc. Heck, if you wanna, add it to your to-do list (who's gonna steal your to-do list and judge you for it? that'd be weird). Once you start crossing tasks off, you'll start giving a visual to your accomplishments. If you feel that you're not accomplishing "enough" (you are, but I have a solution anyway), break up your bigger tasks to smaller ones. "Do laundry" can become "wash laundry, dry laundry, fold laundry, put away laundry" and even if you didn't put away your laundry, you still did 3/4! Hooray! Sounds silly, sure, but you will be able to see that you have done things. You might be a sack of potatoes but you're a sack of potatoes that can do things!

(like Seokjin says, it's a trash can, not a trash cannot! *windshield wiper laugh* ... what? he never said that? w... well, he would if he practiced more English!)

Being serious for a second, burnout happens to everyone. In a world where everyone keeps going on and on about production of results, having an impact on the world, hell, even all the recent pushes to be positive and uplifting in this tough time... the truth is that it is impossible to always succeed, to do every good deed, to always have a smile.

You can't always hold yourself to that standard. It's fine if all you have today are the small wins. Small wins slowly become big victories. You're not a machine. You're a person. Your worth its not based off what you have produced or done. Trying your best is good enough.

Honestly, I just get tired of myself, lol. I'm tired of feeling useless, I'm tired of doing nothing, I'm tired of not being me, so I do the things that make me feel like me and—

I think we all need to start fighting back against the phenomenon of Christmas Creep, where Christmas stuff is slowly introduced to broadcast schedules, marketing and stores before the Christmas holiday season starts. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, even whether you like to celebrate Christmas before the season (and by season I don't just mean 'Christmas holiday season' though that counts, too, I mean winter) starts or not.

There is no problem with individuals deciding they want to celebrate Christmas earlier and longer than traditionally celebrated. The problem is when it's forced down all of our throats for fucking months to boost companies' profits.

Because it's fairly early autumn and it's already starting here. If we're not careful, a summer Christmas won't just be a Southern Hemisphere thing, it'll be forced upon us in the Northern Hemisphere, too.

Don't buy from massive Christmas displays in major shops before at least Halloween. Refuse to watch early Christmas films if you don't actually want to watch Christmas films early on. Which I mean, I'm hoping some of you are reading that and thinking 'What are you on about' but I have seriously seen my mum put Christmas films on whilst complaining that Christmas films are on and when asked just said 'Well, it's what's on TV' whilst there are several alternative options. One: Find something else on TV, there normally is at least something until late November/December. Two: Stream something un-Christmassy. Three: Turn the damn TV off if you're not actually watching anything, or wanting to watch the thing that you are watching. Don't listen to early Christmas radio songs unless you want to. And maybe, if you want to watch Christmas stuff or listen to Christmas stuff, choose a method alternative to radio or broadcast television. Like a DVD or downloaded music. Complain about out-of-season Christmas displays. I don't know. Just fucking stop it from getting worse, and hopefully make it better.

Also yeah, I also haven't been playing much Genshin. In fact I have been playing so little Gesnhin that when I logged in two days ago I had the "wow you're back!" event lol. Whoops. To be fair I was prolly gone three weeks. Not looking forward to the grinding to finish the events in the next two days but, y'know, whoops. And ohh how lovely! I hope you had a good time at the convention! Cosplaying is so awesome, I'm glad you had a chance to do it. I'm sure your Venti was 11/10 flawless.

And yeah I have gotten more motivated hearing Scaramouche might come out in about two or so big updates. Scaramouche if you're playable you WILL be mine. Mwahaha.

And yeah that research project was uh, interesting. It sorted itself out thankfully. Shout out to the book in my closet I need to return. And now a new school year! A new, much busier school year (complicated pandemic gap year stuff etc)...

And oh good luck! I know that applying for colleges (if you haven't done that yet) can be very stressful but remember that you can handle it and that all will be well. Also make sure to talk to any teachers/councilors you can. They really are indispensable. Also know sometimes you may mess up or feel a bit of a mess, but all will come out right in the end. You'll get through it. And college will be wonderful.

I hope that you can find good ways to cope! No one should be stressed 24/7 for a good half of the year. Make sure that you also take care of yourself, and that you're patient with yourself. Be honest when something's not going well, knowing that doesn't mean everything is going terribly.

ok so random question but I saw you're Australian and I was wondering (as someone who's hoping to travel there soonish)... how likely is it for tourists to come in contact with your legendary massive/deadly bugs? also is January a nice time to visit? anything special you recommend people do while visiting? ok so bugs I see every day are cockroaches and ants. which might be a sign of a disgusting household in most other countries but in australia they just mean that you live in a house.

I’m currently living v close to the desert and I’ve seen 1 snake in the last 3 years. but all our snakes are Mean so you do not touch and back away slowly if you see them. also don’t walk in long grass or in ditches or near bushes. because of potential snakes.

spiders are v common also but they like to stay outside and they’re Calm Boys unless you try to touch them. my fave is the golden orb spider because it makes golden thread for its webs!

also we have a lot of geckos which like to sit in your house and make kissy noises at you. cat-calling bastards.

january is a hot time to visit - I’d recommend april-september. much more tolerable temperatures. but january is good for the beaches because all the water is nice and warm so!!! live ur own life man I believe in u

special things depend on where you are sorta? I can give you advice on brisbane (cool and fun if you’re looking for a Calm Time and Not Much To Do), sydney (many buildings and Too Many People) and melbourne (it’s got lots of good bars and it’s also Calm but in a Hipster Way). also there are lots of great country towns (LIKE PARKES WHERE THE LARGEST RADIOTELESCOPE IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE IS :D) but everything is kinda far apart from everything else so you’d have to decide where you were going (don’t go north in january. poor plan)
