Art I made revisiting and updating a book I've been wanting to write and draw since 2010. Who knows what the future might bring?

New attempt at a Squirrelflight design! Idk how i feel about the colors :/ I might revisit this later and try to come up with colors I like more. 

She gets her darker red shade from her grandfather Redtail and she is a tortie like her mom Sandstorm and like Redtail! Some red squirrels have darker colors on their backs and tail tips so I tried to emulate that with the black patches on this design! I also gave her white on her muzzle that is similar to the patches on Leafpool’s muzzle so they could have a similarity! 

I gave her a tail bracelet which was given to her by Crowfeather! In RoC they are mates and Hollyleaf is their kit! So are Dandeliondust and Sparkfire! 

Firestar is mates with both Shriketail (Longtail) and Sandstorm, and Leafpool is from Fire x Shrike, while Squirrel is from Fire x Sand! Squirrel was born a moon or two after Leaf was and they were raised like littermates!

How long I have been doing art

People occasionally ask me how long I’ve been drawing and that question gets me utterly confused 😅 um, probably since I remember myself?.. 😅

First of all, big reveal. I’m old. Much older than you probably ever guessed. Because I’ve been doing digital art since 2003, and I was not exactly a toddler at that point, he-he. Don’t ask me my age though – I’m still a lady and I consider it impolite 🤭 but that might actually answer the questions of many teenagers why I don’t particularly interact much 🙈

So anyways, now we have settled my “art career” span. But saying “I began doing digital art in 2003” – well… I don’t want to do that, because people will be like, “whoa, 20 years”?! And will freak out at such a prospect – 20 years to get to my level, which is, frankly speaking, far from professional. Not to mention that before digital art I also drew traditionally quite a bit.

But the main reason is because “doing digital art since 2003” does not equal “for 20 years”.

How about we revisit these years and look closer at my digital art journey? I can’t promise that I will recall everything 100% accurately, but I’ll do my best.

So around 2003-2004 I tried drawing in Photoshop for the first time. It was an image of a lion, and to be honest, to this day I’m hella proud of myself.

Yes, first attempt. Yes, I drew with a freaking mouse!

My second piece from the same year span is the “Dancer”. oh yes, the remakable hepatitis skin tone 🙈

To be honest, I don’t recall having a drawing tablet that long ago, I'm quite sure I got it only in 2008, but looking at it, despite its flaws, I can hardly believe I drew that using a mouse… I’m not sure, it’s a mystery. The Lion was definitely a mouse artwork.

From thereon I abandoned digital art for a while due to studying, then work, and finally online RPGs…

In 2008 I posted my first digital WIP after a 5 year break.

Oh my gosh... Remind me to never try realism again, clearly not my thing 🙈

I think I was trying to draw an avatar for myself, which doesn’t exactly justify drawing a woman aged probably around 40 🙈 I was not that old!! As far as I can see from my journal, that artwork crashed and only this snippet of it was what I had left. I think it’s for the good. I ended up commissioning the avatar from a proper artist, ha-ha…

Over the span of 2 months I posted 5 more digital art pieces, none of them ever completed actually 🙈 And yes, behold how ugly they are...

My ambitions were growing faster than my skills were improving. The piece with the couple with that naked girl is my special pain because I even attended a digital art course by an amazing artist I was really looking up to back then – Anry – to try and finish this piece, but I failed miserably. I was the only person in that course (5 day 12hr/day intense course) out of 15 people who came “just for fun” – the rest were pursuing a professional digital illustrator career.

This is what I left off with after that course.

In this collage you see on the left what I came with, the middle – what the teacher did after I explained my concept, and on the right – my attempt to take the piece to its final form. But I could never accept that the base was made for me and not by me...

It still grips my heart when I look at it because it was one of my greatest fails. I think that to die peacefully, I need to finish this artwork 😆 If anyone is curious about the story behind this artwork, I’ll post it separately.

Anyway, as I said, I didn’t reach my goal, was hugely disappointed in myself and dropped digital art in April 2008.

However, I came back 1.5 years later, in November 2009, when I got into anime 😂

I think that’s also when I first tried Paint Tool SAI. Up until March 2012, I uploaded roughly 20+/- digital artworks/WIPs. The quality was a bit inconsistent, but I was beginning to get the hang of it a bit, finally. Here are some of them (yeah, the span of the mood is extraordinary):

So, in 2.5 years – merely 20 artworks. Just to compare, in 2022 alone I made 75+ artworks, which doesn’t even include animations and stuff I considered to not be proper artworks.

So, my last artwork from that period was in March 2012 (the one with the winged dude blocking the way for the girl), after which I abandoned digital art again, for good this time. I actually thought - forever, to be honest.

I’m not sure what happened then. I guess I just lost my motivation, got over my fictional crushes, was depressed and not happy with myself…

Problem is that in reality, I don’t have any imagination at all. Part of the reason why I always suspected that despite being quite decent in drawing, I would never succeed as an artist, so I could only say that my dream was to draw for Disney. But I knew I never would. And I knew I can’t do original art. Fan arts – yes, subject to being highly inspired, a feeling similar to a crush. I was too dependent on the mood. But even so… my artworks never were particularly fancy or original, I admit it.

Part of the reason why I’m also so sensitive about AI now. I see people actually living my dream, and I'm so happy for them. Working as illustrators, having an income from what they create... And that is being stolen from them now. That’s why I will probably never accept AI.

Ugh, turned off the subject…

Anyway, as I said, I abandoned art in 2012 and only picked it back up in October 2021 because of Kakashi. 😆

If my math is correct, that’s a 9.5 year break. I have been going non-stop since October 2021, so I would say that my ongoing artistic journey lasts for almost 2 years now. The previous 2-year period with 20 artworks – I’m not really sure about the value of that. The previous 7 digital artworks – even more so.

If I had to sum up my entire digital art journey, – I would say it is around 5–6 years, but in reality probably won’t add up even to 3 years, because the 3 years adding up from a bit of 2003, a bit of 2008 and bits of 2009-2012 had me produce only around 30 artworks, a majority of which were never even completed.

My main progress happened between 2021 and now, so in the last 2 years. And to be honest, I understand that if I am to continue - this is only the beginning...

Time to employ your vast imagination! Your inner child hopes to reconnect with you, whether it's through drawing, colouring (I see a rainbow), revisiting their favourite cartoons, favourite animals or going to a fishing trip. They extend their small hand towards you in hopes that you'd take them on a great adventure! It doesn't have to be really great and grand, it just has to be something where you both can let go of the mundane dread of daily life, and just focus on living. The rest can wait.

The colours are really popping in this reading. I see someone playfully mixing different colours together to see what colour they'd be getting. Also nail art, tattoo art and digital art. Let loose your inner artist! What's one thing you've always wanted to do but haven't done as much of? Think mundane but creative, childlike things. Live through your art, and your life will be transformed into a beautiful work of art.

Were you perhaps a child who liked to create imaginary worlds and characters? Are you perhaps a creative person or a writer who dabbles in world building, or an artist who enjoys designing worlds or clothings? I hear “time to pick up the pieces and see what you'll find”. You might gain a new perspective when you revisit old stuff you created. For others of you, I see that creating a warm, wholesome meal for yourself or loved ones is going to warm your heart so much and bring you closer to them. Nothing says love than making home-cooked meals. Time to take out the special recipe book you and your loved ones both contributed to!

Cards: Connect with the Earth, Ground Yourself, Clean Your Space

Right away I get this misty energy, like how when the window would become misty in the cold and you have to wipe it to see clearer. Your energy feels like the chill after a heavy rain where everything is renewed. You might have just gotten out of a bad cycle or a bad environment. You're still not sure where to go forward from now but you know for certain you won't look back. You're a brand new person now, and you're getting to know yourself again. From this point forward you'd stumble across big and small treasures here and there. Some would be tiny things that would make your day like a cool rock, a stranger's kindness, the sun warming you up giving you that new refreshment of hope, flowers, etc. Some would be a lovely addition to your life, like a new friend who really gets you, a new favourite place to go, a new goal you'll be certain of and a romantic relationship that is worthy of you. Keep going, Pile 2 and follow your heart's compass. Keep choosing the things that put a genuine smile to your face and make you feel alive. One thing would lead you to the next. Your life is a rose unfolding in the best of ways.

You are really taking the time to ground yourself. You don't seek external help anymore, instead you look towards your inner self. You are healing, you are mindful. Nothing will disrupt your peace. Your serenity is not unfelt by others. They sense the change in you and are inspired by it. They want to learn how you can be so calm and peaceful. The past is wiped clean. Its traces can still be found in old wounds but it does not restrict you, for you are rewriting your story with every new seed you plant inside your mind. Don't place so much attachment on the future that you neglect the present. The present is called "present" for a reason. Cards: Flow Like Water, Family, Connect with Crystals

Pamper yourself. Let down your hair and forget about the troubles of the day. You're entering a hibernation period. It's okay to give yourself time to release the past from your grip. You don't have to worry too much about past entanglements or even the future. It will sort itself out in time. For now, the focus is you. What is an activity that allows you to fully relax in peace and mindfulness? Do more of that, and you'll find healing in the midst of it.

You might be searching for fulfillment, whether it be a vocation, a partner, a goal etc. Some of you are unsure what it is that you really want, so you're running around in circles hoping that you'd one day stumble across that treasure that's gonna fulfill you. In the midst of the search you've neglected yourself. Don't wait for external things to complete you. Your worth and happiness must first be realised within you. Do not be so attached to a certain ideal that you feel that your life is incomplete without it. You are a beautiful, capable and amazing human being and you don't need anything or anyone to complete you because you, my dear, are already complete. If you feel that you don't really know who you are, what you want or where you want to be, this hibernation period is a time for you to slowly get to know yourself. Remove your focus from external things and simply focus on being yourself. Feel each of your emotions patiently. Be there for yourself. You're blooming into your better self, can you feel that?

You are so loved, Pile 3. An older family member absolutely adores and supports you. They want to offer you comfort. The energies I get from them range widely, so please take what your intuition pulls you to. I get grandparent energy, slightly more feminine than masculine, they might be a living relative or they are watching over you from the spiritual plane (i.e. deceased). They are a person who is warm, supportive and will tell things that you need to hear, not what you want to hear. They can be good at cooking and/or gardening. They understand what you're going through, they believe in you with all their heart. For some of you, they communicate with you via dreams.

I also get messages involving taking outdoors trips and adventures. Perhaps going on a retreat will help you make clear of what's on your mind and plant new seeds in your heart. Throughout your life you have been inspired by different things and people. They are role models you aspire to. They encourage you to do your best. However, it's time you look at them then look at yourself properly. Do you admire them so much that if you don't do as good as them that you consider yourself a failure? Do you put them on the pedestal so much that if you don't mold yourself into what they are, then you think you are not achieving enough? It's easy to get lost in the glory of those we admire. Stop comparing them to yourself. Start seeing how unique you are and start appreciating the good things about you or what you do.

If you are thinking about picking up tarot or astrology, you're pulled to it for a reason. They can be your eyes and ears as you navigate life. Try to do a reading for yourself, especially on current situations in your life that you can know for sure if it resonates. The future is a starlit sky, lots of probabilities and possibilities. You might find that with the aid of cards or the stars you might have a companion by your side to serve as a compass.

Next, I get a feeling of being wrapped in a pillowfort and blankets, feeling so warmed, nuzzling with a cat. Weekend vibes, you have nowhere to go and would just like to spend a relaxing day at home doing your favourite things. Go for it. Follow your mood. Don't deny yourself a snack if you feel up to it. Spend your days engaging with the tiny but happy moments. You deserve a treat. Warm yourself up from the inside.

Some of you are gonna get a tattoo soon! I feel this blooming of self love coming straight out of your heart and embracing your whole being. Your love seeps from within you and glows outwards. You might be feeling your psychic senses opening up more currently. You're aligned with your femininity and earth energy. Use this period to create something, maybe plant a flower, start a journal or take up a new hobby. Spend time nourishing your spirit and your body.

The previous paragraph read from the Nourish Your Temple card was a well of femininity and glowing up. This one from the Drink Tea card oozes masculinity. I like how your energies are achieving a balance. I smell a strong oolong scent emanating from the teapot on the card. That signifies you feeling grounded, confident and stable in your career. You don't chase, you don't feel the need to prove your capability to anyone. You know what you are capable of and you allow the quality of your work to speak for you. Remember, this is only the beginning. Your future is bright and starlit, you have a long way to go.

happy 413!! thought I'd celebrate this year with a crossover with my current big interest. these two are some of my favorite characters, and I've always thought they'd get along really well, considering how similar they are <3

I don't think I'll ever do an official design edit for Hu Tao, since my edits would be so minor. but for anyone curious about my take on her design: I made her shorts longer, and gave them a thick cuff to match her sleeves. I also moved her Vision to her hat, b/c we don't have enough characters with interesting Vision positions imo. I also gave her flats instead of heels. any other discrepancies you see are just simplification for the sake of my style, haha

Aradia's design is based off my specevo headcanon for HS Trolls. it's a bit old, so I might revisit it soon, but I'm still rather happy with it

fem mako with all my little hcs applied so she doesn't look even slightly like the original. you're welcome. I was hunched over my dad's nice drawing computer (he's an architect) for about five hours trying to figure out how to digital art on krita. this is the best I could come up with.

I kind of like this so. I'm gonna yap a bit about my 'artistic intentions'. starting off there's the qipao, which was originally going to be red/gold like the ref pic I used, but then I was like. what if I made her look even more ek. and then the qipao turned green. this was mostly just me testing out shading and stuff, and I'm honestly pretty proud of the qipao in general. it's hard to see in the finished piece, but the contrast between shaded and flat colors is actually insane. I'm not too happy with how Mako herself turned out.

however.

the hair and the makeup are my newest prized possessions. like. the eyeliner. the little hair pieces sticking up from the ears. the lipstick. the little blush. aosufhoafhosaiff. also her eyes?? I wasn't sure but I really wanted to include the central green/gold heterochromia, and this was born. and her little mole. I was giggling to myself drawing that on. I thought the purple snake tatoo on her arm would be a cool nod to some of mako's concept art w an arm tatoo and also a,, backstory,, w the triple threats,, but i didn't really like how it turned out. left it on just because.

and on the topic of her arms. I don't fucking know how to draw burn scars. help. or arms, actually, but whatever. revisiting those the arms are actually so bad but I was staring at the computer screen so long I could taste the colors. I hate anatomy and that is why I write more than I draw. and the fucking lichtenberg scars. I'm on the brink. they look so cool but my hand was cramping so goddamn bad drawing ten thousand little lines on my pixelly fucking krita canvas oh my god. though if i may i would like to direct your attention to the scars on her ear. I thought that was a neat little detail but idk.

otherwise anatomy-related I tried to give her that blocky ek build as well, although I think it came out more clunky than anything. though honestly I’m not too upset as this was a practice. I might go back another day and fix it to be slightly less terrible but. whatever.

uhhh the background was supposed to be the fire nation emblem and her name as, like, a newspaper cover or something. if my handwriting wasn't terrible, I would've written on the little boxes of subtitles like, 'captian and firebender of the up-and-coming probending team, the fire ferrets' and 'the survivors of a true rags-to-riches tale; the background of the newest probenders.' so yeah that was kind of the idea with her name in the back. also she doesn’t have her scarf because uhhh. I forgot it but we’ll just. pretend. idk. I also do not know how to draw scarves so,,, yeah.

i love her so much btw i'm really mentally ill abt her. if anyone has like art tips. please share im really new and really bad at this.

Art and Life Updates, Future Planning

(will be a bit personal, pardon me!)

I've been resting from drawing (in terms of making 'full art piece') for the past few months if anyone notice? People who followed me on Twitter might also notice how a bit absent I was from drawing full art, or contributing to fandom freely like I used to ><

The truth is, aside from waiting for commission clients, I'm actually have been participating in this zine for months, as I did contribute a piece and another small illust for the cover collaboration!

Beside that, I'm also testing my luck applying jobs left and right IRL. I guess it's been the almost 2 years since I graduated from university, but I barely receive any 'proper' love calls from any companies I've tried to apply to as any position possible. And my mental health has been unstable thanks to this problem as well haha!

I cried a lot, but at the same time...I'm so fast at getting back on track, trying, failing again, and the cycle repeats. It's been like this since June 2022, where my latest contract ends and my full independent freelance gigs starts. For the latest application experiences, I also try to apply for art editor and concept artist position, which requires me for creating new stuffs for its technical test + reason of most of my content absence (sadly again, I didn't pass the evaluation XD)

I did doodle a simple things and sketch anything, both traditionally and digitally, also grow back my love for gaming uwu. I think some (read: those who follows on twitter) already noticed that I've been playing Suikoden series (1, 2, Tierkreis -> with emulator for android) and Cookie Run Kingdom ^q^ Also the classic farming game like Stardew Valley and Graveyard Keeper! It's so fun and refreshing, and makes me less stressful to think about drawing!

But as I receive the latest rejection letter, I've been meaning to share some of my plans that I've considered:

I might gonna share the rejected concept art here, since I love the design so much ^q^ but of course in more refined visdev format!

I also wants to focus on practice, and I may or may not share those things? I'm not sure about other creators but I have this annual 'improvement stuck' moment where I feel like I kept being in comfort zone and trying to find anything I'm lacking and explore it, to test if I'm capable to do that certain new things or not. Be it art technique, hobbies, etc.

I do have a plan to join the hitsuhina week, but I can't promise if I can contribute everyday + in form of full art piece like I used to. It'll be more doodly/sketchy, idk, but I guess what matters is the overall concept that were delivered!

Related with point number 2, as I want to focusing on practice, I also want to revisit older personal projects. I have some OCs that I created during middle school and can't stop thinking about them TwT so I wish to explore their lore back >< which means less fandom content? Who knows.

Re-promote my commission form! I won't change the price for full-color, but I'll add different style options like previous commission that comes with much more cheaper or at least affordable prices for anyone who still wish to get something from me ^^ I'm still going to accept any client, beside job seeking IRL. I mean, I still need some personal income despite still living with my family?

So these are pretty much what I've been planning. Everything may or may not goes according to plan, but it won't hurt to give it a try and let it flow. So I close this post with this mantra:

Revisiting an old, old concept from the dusty depths of the World of Light and Darkness with this WIP. Also actually trying to do colored digital art again.

Angels are one of the five Fallen races, descendants of Celestial-born who left the Firmament and became mortal. Their cousins, the Long-bodied and Element-born dragons, descended willingly to help and guide the various people of the World in the ways of magic and fate, sacrificing eternity for their love of Creation. But the Angels, alongside the Demons, were cast out of the Firmament for their actions. The Demons were once Dark-born, the Celestials of Empty Space, who nearly destroyed the Created World in the distant past. Their siblings the Angels were once Light-born, the Celestials of Stars, who tried to replace the Firmament with the Created World. Thusly they were cast out, and their grief at loosing their immortality warped them into caricatures of their former selves.

Angels have the forms of Light-born taken to the extreme; nothing but wings and eyes and raw warped magic. They lack mouths or proper limbs, vocalizing through jagged movements and moving like fire on the wind. Their half-corporal bodies seem to stretch and shrink not at the will of the Angel, but at the will of Fate. These pitiful, horrible beings can be found drifting among the desert sands of Ravai and Lyardia, their forlorn cries sounding something like trumpets and the crashing waves of the sea. But they are not to be trusted. Angels cannot control their urge to create, and anything they come into contact with will warp beyond imagination. It is said that when the first Angel Fell into the desert, it created towering spires and everlasting sandstorms in its despair.

Their former Dark-born counterparts, whom I may or may not ever draw, are similarly bent and twisted reflections of their former selves. Spiked and fanged, they are nothing but claws and mouths and the lack of light. They have no eyes nor proper body, feeling with endless tongues and stumbling about with tearing talons. These Fallen live in the icy north of Baru and Lyardia, hissing something similar to cracking ice and untuned harp strings. As the opposite tragedies of Angels, Demons have an unrestrained need to destroy, twisting and erasing parts of Creation at the will of Fate.

But when they Fell, some of the new Angels and Demons actually managed to keep fragments of their sanity. Knowing that their kind were doomed to wander endlessly, never satisfied and never at rest, they resolved to create something that might be able to restrain them from total destruction. And so the Fae were born, living embodiments of the disparity between Light and Dark. They are shifting, inconsistent mortals that may appear however they please, though most look like combinations of Demon and Angel traits. Because the Fae were born, they will die, but their mortality also keeps them freer from the strings of Fate than their immortal and everlasting parents.
