I keep thinking that like V1 is like a non-sentient feral beast that has sudden flashes of genius to solve the occasional puzzle, but it's all just following its programming like a state machine. Like even with the Terminal lore and V2's very clear sentience, I keep thinking V1 just is like different being, like an older bot who doesn't have all the sentience as the other robots which lets it be much more efficient with its murder. This is all wrong, of course, V2 and the other robots are practically feral beasts too and are just as blood thirsty (just not as efficient), the Terminal lore obviously applies directly to V1, yadda yadda. But what inspired this post, and why I think I keep having this weird perception of V1 despite the fact that I know it's wrong, is because I keep forgetting the fact that V1 directly speaks! It only happens once (at least as I'm remembering, this whole post is about me forgetting shit so like who fucking knows), but I keep forgetting the "You're not getting away this time" line. Like with all the lore it never is in your face with how it actually applies to V1 and we never get anything direct about V1's personality (I wanted to brain rot about how this is wrong too and we actually do get a lot of V1 personality through the gameplay and animations n stuff but i am so tired and this post is getting so long), so when I first saw that line it felt a little jarring, especially because it only happens later into the game and doesn't happen again, and my brain just sorta didn't know how to slot it into the game's story.

EXCEPT THAT'S ALSO NOT CORRECT! (Extreme brain rot territory that might just be me looking too much into it but I don't care) It's not, like, a special dialog prompt or anything and V1 does not audibly speak, it's the SAME text box that appears throughout the entire game in tutorials!!!!! This can mean either two things:

One (which is what i currently believe) is that ALL the text is ACTUALLY V1 speaking, at least to itself. Like the "Sentries can be interrupted by shooting them with the revolver, railgun, yadda yadda" is like V1's computers making a little "mental" note of a new enemies weaknesses, perhaps because V1 knows about these enemies beforehand or V1, bein a lil robo dude, did a scan or something about V1's computer knows how to figure that stuff out. Not to mention other game-y things such as the scoreboard and cyber grind are continually proven canon so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary. This makes the sudden dialog less jarring in my mind because it's not sudden!

Two (which i don't like as much but whatever) is that all dialog in the game isn't, like, real. Like the tutorial stuff is just tutorial stuff, has nothing to do with V1, and by extension the "You're not getting away this time" line isn't actually V1 dialog. There's a little bit of evidence to support this one as well (even though I'm gonna refute every single piece in favor of my preferred interpretation). Jakito's lines are also in this dialog box, which would go against it being V1's dialog or internal monolog. However, that could just be because words are being communicated in a way other than speech and V1 is translating this, sorta like some kind of telepathy, not to mention the words were a different color (I THINK?? I THINK IM REMEBERING THAT RIGHT). There's also the "Something wicked this way comes.... Just kidding :)" line, which wouldn't make sense for V1 to say to itself. I'm tempted to write it off as a funny little goof, there's so fucking much I want to write off as a silly little goof, but Hakita said before that all secret levels besides 2-S is canon (I MIGHT BE LYING I JUST SPENT AN HOUR LOOKING FOR THIS QUOTE BUT COULDNT FIND IT, DID I IMAGINE IT??? GOING CRAZY) so I don't know! But that could've been a meme as well!! It could also be similar to the Jakito thing. Maybe it could've also been V1 being like "wouldnt the be funny lol" to itself. whatever. point being the "youre not getting away this time" line could just be non canon and just a silly little line.

I obviously really prefer my first interpretation, stuff that seems like its just game-y stuff keeps being made canon so like it just makes sense that something we'd take for granted like tutorials is also canon.

I can't tell if I am looking too far into all this or if this is just something everyone already knows or noticed i am so tired and potentially at that stage of insanity where you think its all so obvious and everyone is on the same page and then you talk about it and realize everyone actually thinks your crazy but also maybe it is so obvious and im just dumb or maybe this is all stupid i am so tired and have so many feelings about this fucking game. I had so much more i wanted to say but forgot it all because its so late. when looking for references for this stuff i thought i knew like most of the lore but realized i was actually probably wrong because i havent seen a bucnh of hakita quotes about shit. the one quote i was trying to find just stopped existing and i dont know if it ever existed. This post is a mess, i dont even know if any part of this will make sense to another living soul or if there is a single sentence that isn't completely incoherent.

So i have officially finished reading the mermaid melody manga and i have many questions and notes

(it might sound very negative but ive had a weird amout of fun with it and i am still a fan of the anime lol)

Like:

How did the anime improve on the material so much while still being pretty bad? (Dont get me wrong i love the anime very much)

Its very clear that the closer to then end it got the characterization shifted to fit the anime more (i mean this completely neutrally)

Is it me overthinking or were Michel and Michal (Mikeru and Mikaru) meant to be called Michael when they fused but everyone forgot? Including the creators? (Fr one translation note ive seen had no idea why they called him Mikeru cause that not how you say Michael in Japanese and im just like ?????)

It felt like they forgot to introduce some characters... Like Nagisa lmao (my partner was shocked when i told them taki basically only exists in the anime)

It kinda just ...ended? Like it was a very weird place and pacing to stop?

Ive seen i think wikipedia mention that some people argued that the writing is too childish and im just like ...how did you get through the WALLS of things to criticize to get to the writing??

MANHWA RECS??? Say no more.

The Villainess is a Marionette / The Way to Save the Female Lead's Older Brother both have frankly unreasonably beautiful art and pretty badass, calculating, very unreasonably attractive heroines.

Death is the Only Ending for a Villainess is another manhwa with a really cool female lead who's very pragmatic and relatable, she's one I'm really rooting for.

The Great Wish is a more plot-intensive but slow-moving politically motivated manhwa with some very nice character development and really neat grey vs grey morality.

I Failed to Throw the Villain Away is a secret pleasure of mine. The art is very pretty, the male lead is pretty much batshit insane, and he and the female lead are both traumatized by a fucked up childhood they spent together (the male lead was a slave in the female lead's household).

I heard about some of these before! I think I tired to get into The Villainess Is A Marionette, but I don't think I found a very good translation and so I couldn't get into it. I like to read Manhwa to turn my brain off and just enjoy the romance, so I'm very particular about the translation lol.

I heard about The Way To Save The Female Lead's Other Brother from a strong female progtagist listing. But I found myself not liking the characters that much? I felt like the female lead was a little too cold hearted for my taste. Honestly I really, really enjoy strong, takes no bullshit Mcs, than Mcs that are bashful or insecure. But I don't think cold hearted Mcs are for me. It's the reason when I couldn't get into The Lady And The Beast, even though, on paper, I should have really enjoyed the Mc.

I think I recognize the cover to Death Is The Only Ending For The Villainess but I can't remember if I actually read it or not... guess it's going on my to read list lol.

The Great Wish and I Failed to Throw The Villain Away both look really good! I also haven't heard of either of them! Though, im a little weary about reading less popular Manhwas purely because I worry what the translation quality will be.....

Now, to get into some of MY recs.

When I first got into My Gently Raised Beast I was expecting myself not to like it. The Mc is your typical shy, and "Oh, the male lead could *never* fall for me" type of character. Which i really hate. What had me holding on was the male lead. There's nothing outright special about him, but I just really enjoyed that he thinks about what the Mc might want. He's never pushy, or forceful, and tries to do everything the "correct" way so they can be together. Honestly, it was very refreshing. I always dislike harsh male leads that never seem to question what their love interest would feel, so seeing this guy be thoughtful was really nice. Overall, just a really sweet story.

Beware The Villainess is truly my favorite Manwha of all time. I think I love absolutely everything about it. The Mc is the classic "isekaied onto the villain but is actually a good person" trope. The Mc takes no shit from aby of the guys around her, and has an incredibly wholesome friendship with another girl character. The love story between the Mc and the male lead honestly blew me away. It's basically a role reversal, were the girl is all tough and headstrong, and the guy is more shy and bashful. I never seen a role reversal done like this in a Manwha before and I absolutely ADORE it! The Female lead is all "let *me* protect *you*" and she does! Really, that's all I want in a role reversal lol. Yet the Mc isn't cold or unfeeling at all, she's still very sweet and has empathy. Honestly, the male lead just gives me such "I can peg him" vibes its amazing lol. Definitely a must read!

Again, The Reason Raeliana Ended up at the Duke’s Mansion seems like a Manwha I would have really disliked. The male lead is forceful and doesn't care about the Mcs feelings. The Mc is insecure to an almost insane level. So why did I read every single chapter of this Manwha? Well, for starters it has one of the best translations I ever seen. And. I don't really know? This was the first Manwha I ever read, so I wasn't really intune with kind of things I liked and disliked in a Manwha. I found it a while later, and decided to pick up roughly where I left off, and once you get past the whole "Male lead is a jerk and the Mc doesn't really wanna be with him" it's actually a really sweet story! (When the two leads actually love each other, the story is actually sweet! Who knew! /j) The manwha is finished, and fully translated and easy to find and read. It's also incredibly funny and has a really good art style. If you're willing to put up with some of the things I listed, then I think you should give it a try.

Inso's Law is different as in its set in the present day, but I actually think this is one of my favorite piece of media ever lol. It's just, so incredibly good! Basically, the plot is that this girl doesn't really get Iskeaied into a story, but more so a book she's reading kinda becomes reality and she's gets placed as the female leads best friend. That's not really spoilers because you fund this out in like, the first chapter lol. It's incredibly instructing and really deals with the stress of being Iskeaied. Also, every character is so incredibly flushed out, not just the Mc and the love interest! The story is extremely funny, while also having a lot of heart and feels. I wouldn't really call the Mc a strong female character, but more of a regular person. I would recommend this to people who even hate Iskeai stories because this one does it in such a unique way that I think everyone should read.

It's been a while since I read Who Made Me A Princess but I found myself really enjoying it when I first read it. Unlike the others, this is a family story instead of a romance focused story like the others. The father is pretty typical guy for a Manwha, as in he's very cold and unfeeling and it's the Mcs job to "fix" him. Honestly I normally really dislike these stories, but since they're so common in the genre I kinda forced myself to tolerating it lol. But when you actually get into the story, and pass the father being a jerk, the relationship they build together is actually very sweet. I also found the beginning to extremely hilarious, and the side characters to be very likeable.

I really, really enjoyed Tricked Into Becoming The Heroine's Stepmother. It's a very laid back story, which I honestly prefer lol. Hugh fansty is nice, but when you have to start taking notes on what the characters are saying, and their nations relationships with each other, it becomes a little too much for me lol. Unlike the last rec, this dad really really loves his daughter, and it's why he's cold to the Mc! That passes extremely quickly tho, so if you're worried about that don't worry. The relationship between the Mc and the male lead is extremely natural, and it was something I found really really cute in this story. The basic plot is the Mc gets sent into the book her and her friends made, but years before the story takes place, now she teams up with the male lead to stop certain things from happening. It's a really cute read, and I definitely loved how the kid character was protrayed!

The Monster Duchess And The Contract Princess is a really cute read! There's basically no romance in this, and instead focuses on the family aspect! The basic plot is the Mc wants to create a contract with this real scary noble family in exchange for protection. I loved the adopted mother, and how lowkey intense she is, while also being very sweet. It's a very good read if you like adult characters looking after mistreated children.

The Remarried Empress has so much emotional depth, and great characters, that I actually got a little mad when I would read through the comments while I read this story. Characters make bad choices, but you completely understand why they did and where they're coming from. The Mc is cold and doesn't show much emotion, but you know exactly when she's like that. Her husband is a jerk, and is the villain of the story, but I still found myself able to understand his viewpoint and where he was coming from. I actually ended up feeling really bad for the rival girl (?? What do you call the character that's like a rival to the main girl? Whatever, rival girl works lol) because I understand where she's coming from! Basically every character makes really bad mistakes, but I can understand their view point. The story is very nuanced, and a great read if you like those kind of stories.

Ok, so I'm going to be honest, I really really love reverse harem stories. Which is why I absolutely adore My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom! It's extremely funny, like, the humor is definitely one of its main selling points. There's also female love interests too!! Which is always a delight to see in reverse harem stories. It was really interesting seeing the Mc befriend and make all the other characters fall for her, even when she doesn't realize how much of a player she is lol. Overall the story has a lot of heart, and is very funny! (I really struggle to find a reverse harem story that I like because this was one of the first I read and it set the bar SO high for me, so if yall have any suggestions I would love to hear them lol)

That's all the Manhwas I can think of right now! If yall have any more recommendations I would love to hear them! As yall can tell, I kinda crazy about Manhwas lol.

this got long and rambly (of course) asldkjfslj. i would love to make the excuse that it’s bc i’ve got a migraine and had No Sleep but. let’s be real i’m always like this.

ok i’ll start with where i agree: i don’t think anyone has the right to act like an ultimate voice of authority in fandom. i think different people with different backgrounds have varying realms of expertise and they should be respected when they share that knowledge, but that the instant someone starts to use that kind of power as a weapon against people they personally don’t like, i think they forfeit that privilege. no one has the one and only valid truth about a piece of media because that’s fundamentally impossible. i have definitely interacted with diaspo who behave like their heritage gives them some kind of incontrovertible authority over everyone else, and they’re fucking insufferable and often rather cruel, even/especially towards other diaspo. meet me in the denny’s parking lot and fight me for real. i’ll kick ur ass. >:c

however, I also think it’s true that there’s a lot of dismissal of heritage fans in this fandom, if that makes sense, from both sides of the equation: non-Chinese fans ignore our cultural hangups because they’re inconvenient, and non-diaspora disdain us for being not Chinese enough. that puts a lot of us in a position of feeling disrespected just for being who we are, or having our very real knowledge and unique experience as individuals devalued because of it.

regardless of my identity, I have formally studied a lot of things: literary translation, media analysis, the politics of oppression, film critique, religious studies, philosophy, four foreign languages etc. and that is all knowledge that I had to work for, and work hard for. I do have a certain measure of authority on all of these subjects over a layperson (to varying degrees), and there are going to be times when i will be more correct than someone who disagrees with me -- but I’ve also absolutely experienced people talking over that specialized knowledge because of who I am, which is, to be clear. extremely infuriating and hurtful. like, i have cried so much about it in the last 18 months. people see my racial and cultural identity before they see anything else, which is understandable to a degree, but upsetting when it becomes the basis for how my work is judged, whether positive or negative. i don’t want you to trust me blindly because i’m abc. I want to you to trust me because you have examined my work critically and judged it to be trustworthy!

so i guess this is getting into the strongly disagree part of the answer: i’ve been speaking a lot with other diaspora fans lately, and it’s been simultaneously hugely relieving and also really saddening. relieving because oh thank god someone else Gets It, and saddening because pretty much all of us, no matter what kind of diaspo we are (north american, european, SEA, taiwanese etc), we’ve all experienced a lot of pressure in this fandom, from non-Chinese, Chinese, and other diaspora fans alike. we’re all acutely aware that we are not modao’s intended audience because being diaspora vs being “from the mainland” or whatever, are actually quite different things, but modao still feels close to home. even if it was not written FOR us it is still familiar to us.

and, because so many of us are multilingual and multicultural, we end up being the bridge between the “actual” chinese fandom and the english-speaking fandom, which is largely made up of non-chinese. (sidenote: I hate it when people say things about being “actually” any identity because it’s almost always for the exact reason you brought up: to use heritage as street cred. it’s like damn, being “actually” chinese doesn’t make ur opinions any less rank. sure you might be “actually” chinese, but do you have basic reading comprehension and literary criticism skills? no? ok then sit your ass back down) many of us are most comfortable in english! so we produce our content in english! but we also DO often have a somewhat privileged access to the culture that underlies mdzs and can explain it in a language that other non-Chinese fans can understand. so it’s not surprising that people flock to us for answers to their cultural questions. and like. if we think we know the answer, it’s natural for us to try and help. this is fandom! we’re here to have fun and find community! and it is definitely a little bit nice to have my culture treated as something desirable for once instead of just like. a weird exotic curiosity that no one really cares too deeply about. and, since a lot of us are able to do things that non-Chinese fans can’t (research in chinese, for example. ask family members for help and more information etc.) we end up just having more information to share.

I think this sometimes results in a tendency for fandom at large to put heritage/diaspo fans on pedestals and tout them as authorities (or use our conflicting viewpoints as ammunition in fandom drama) when the diaspo in question have repeatedly stated that they should not be taken as authorities on something -- and then, once you reach critical mass, your reputation starts to precede you, and I think there’s a lot of misconceptions of how a lot of diaspo act in this fandom simply because of that phenomenon. most of us know that we’re not ultimate arbiters of some kind of cultural gateway, and it can be very tiring both to be treated as such when we insist we are not, and then punished by other people who assume that we acted like we were.

i don’t think there’s a benefit in trying to keep en fandom and cn fandom totally separate, and I also think it’s unfair to consider the cn fandom the “real” fandom. i think that way lies deeper misunderstandings, gatekeeping, etc. i think we can definitely acknowledge the differences between them, but i think trying to make meaningful connections between fandom circles is really valuable! i don’t think i’ve ever made it a secret that modao is my first cmedia fandom? so it’s also the first time i’ve had reason to interact with chinese fandom, which has been super enlightening and interesting! i’ve made some super cool friends and learned a lot about how fandom works in china, how it’s similar and how it differs from the fandom i’m familiar with.

and then, kind of circling back around, there’s also a bit of a sense like, okay, so if diaspo don’t belong in the CN fandom, but we can’t talk about our own culture with some degree of confidence in EN fandom, then like..... where do we go...? if we see EN fandom doing something that contradicts our cultural knowledge, do we just. not say anything? do we not count unless we’ve already ingratiated ourselves to CN fandom? that’s probably where the core of my strong disagreement comes from, because criticism of diaspora fans as like, acting above their station so to speak, feels just like a tired continuation of the same shit we’ve had to deal with for our whole lives, being told we’re not good enough for anywhere and that we should just be quiet and keep our heads down and get over it. that our opinions, despite coming from a unique perspective with a unique relationship to the subject in question, are less valid or real than “actual” chinese people, you know? and sometimes i see that and im like lmfao just sneer at me for being jook-sing and leave then if you’re so eager to think of me as lesser.

so yeah, basically im of a few minds: true! diaspora fans don’t get to throw their weight around just because they’re diaspo. they don’t get carte blanche to act like bullies or try to shape the fandom to their own personal liking and crusade against people who disagree with them. they don’t get to pretend their heritage makes them superior to everyone else, and i think western diaspora especially need to be careful when asserting any kind of moral lens over the text to acknowledge that we have our own biases to interrogate. i am not immune.meme etc. on the other hand, this vein of criticism tends to put all diaspo in a bit of a double-bind, and also, however unintentionally, plays into the general, continuous trend of dismissing diaspora for being diaspora, and i’m really not about that. i don’t think that’s the motivation behind opinions like this, but i do think that when the basis for the argument hinges on the idea that diaspora are not “real” chinese, no matter how much I too have beef with certain diaspora fans, the argument needs to be revisited.

Right, I mean it’s an adaptation, so making changes (especially updates) on a 42-year-old work is perfectly fine. Even accepted. Esp with Nick bc p much everything happens inside his head. We’ve gotta make some changes so we know what’s going on with him, what he’s thinking, etc. But that’s the challenge of any book-to-screen adaptation, and if you aren’t prepared to tackle that, you shouldn’t do it! Anyway once again I have a lot to say...

I liked that at least someone knew ASL, but it was so obvious that 1) Henry Zaga can hear and 2) they had no one on set who was deaf or HOH. The scene where the committee is deciding to send spies is the worst example. First of all, Glen, who’s leading the discussion, is BEHIND Nick. So Nick doesn’t catch a single word of what he’s saying. Secondly, at one point Nick got up and walked away, with his back to the room. So he missed that entire exchange. If I remember correctly, Larry was sort of behind Nick too. Or maybe in front of him w his back to him? Either way, seated so that Nick couldn’t read his lips. I kept pausing to bitch about it to my mom bc it was so gd annoying.

Obvs Rob Lowe is a hearing actor as well, but he made an effort to like turn ppl’s faces toward him or crane his neck to try to see their faces. He actively tried to follow conversations the way a deaf lipreader might. Some of that could be Henry Zaga’s choices, but a director’s job is to direct, and a writer’s job is to include (at least some) stage direction.

I know that Frannie wasn’t meant to be fluent in ASL, but the fact that she translated what she was saying, but not what anyone else was saying, bugged tf outta me. Also just how Henry Zaga and Odessa Young signed! ASL (all forms of sign language, but that’s the one we’re talking about here) is a 3D language: it’s not just the signs themselves, but also facial expressions and body language. That’s why you can’t directly translate ASL into written English (along w syntax, but that’s outside the scope of this convo), but instead have to “interpret” what’s being signed into written language.

Like I’m very glad they chose to have Nick signing, but just like everything else w him, they didn’t put much effort into it. Part of that could be put on the actor (I have no idea what prep work he did for the role), but like...just based on everything we see onscreen, I seriously doubt he was encouraged to do more than just “learn the signs for these words.”

When they first announced the casting for Fran I was concerned just bc of how much younger than James Marsden Odessa Young is. I think they meant Stu to be a bit younger than James, like maybe late 30s, but...idk she looked like his daughter to me. They didn’t have any romantic chemistry, and the fact that we got no backstory as to how they fell for each other just made that worse. I’m not criticizing Odessa Young here; the poor thing was given nothing to do besides sit around looking wan and pregnant; but like I mentioned in another ask, what do these 2 ppl have in common?! Who knows, bc we literally know nothing about either of them, except that Frannie’s pregnant and Stu’s a widower.

And, yeah, I would’ve loved more Stu and Glen. I’m iffy on how they characterized Glen in some ways. Like when I heard the casting for that I was a hard NO, partially bc Greg Kinnear isn’t old enough, but then they changed the character so that the casting choice worked...I’m just not sure if the character changes worked for me, personally. I did like his death scene better in this one, though. And that he actually got through to Lloyd.

Like we all keep bitching about Nick, bc that was the worst example, but ALL of the “good” characters were seriously under-served here. Where were the prophetic dreams? Where were the groups coming together out on the road? Where were any scenes of them bonding or getting to know each other in Boulder?

I was literally just telling a friend (in the middle of typing this answer) that I think sometimes when people adapt horror (I’m looking at YOU, Kubrik, bc yes The Shining is a gr8 movie, but it’s a dreadful adaptation) they think “it’s horror it’s gotta be scary” and forget that a lot of what makes the best horror is characters. Genre fiction is criticized for being too plot-driven, as opposed to literary fiction being character-driven, and while DUH obviously the plot is hugely important in a novel like The Stand, would you actually give that much of a fuck what happens if you didn’t care about the people involved?

Nick’s death carried so little weight bc they’d diminished the character to a shadow of himself, so it was just like “oh that cute boy with the eye patch died, how sad.” Unlike when I saw the 94 miniseries (before I read the book), and I was screaming at my TV. For all that I can bitch about Game of Thrones (and I can. a lot.), D&D at least knew in the first few seasons to make Ned a character you cared about, make Robb a character you cared about, so that their deaths were as hugely shocking and tragic as in the books.

Am I saying The Stand failed worse than Game of Thrones?! Idk. That’s...saying a lot...I’ll think about it and get back to you. Game of Thrones failed so much more often, and for so many more years...

life update (cw for discussion of weight and weight loss)

so likeeeee i havent talked about it at all but ive lost like ~45 lb/20 kg since february or so and im really happy about it :’) i got under 200lb/90kg for the first time in like... 4 or 5 years which is crazy. in college i was on lexapro for anxiety which i think contributed to eating a lot + gaining a lot of weight (as well as moving out of my parents’ house and in with my now spouse) and for a long time i didn’t think about it? ive been incredibly lucky to be surrounded with people who have loved me unconditionally at whatever size i am and ive always had doctors who have never made me feel shame about my weight, BUT idk. i think in my case (i’m really short) it wasn’t healthy for me, i wasn’t very healthy, i snored REALLY bad (which has completely vanished now so my spouse doesn’t have to wear earplugs LOL) and i would get tired super fast which was kind of embarrassing when me and my friends went on trips and did a lot of walking and stuff! 

so like idk. i always thought it was going to be sooooo hard and terrible and i would have to eat Lettuce Leafs 24/7 but aside from the agony of having to wait months to actually lose weight like... its not been so bad... im proud of myself cuz i go jogging now (really slowly lol) and i remember when jogging for 30 seconds continuously was like holy fuck im going to die but now i can do 8+ minutes and it feels nice, i’d like to get up to jogging a mile at a time but i just try to take it easy. i used to also be like oh my god EVERYONE is looking at me runningggg im so UGLYYY but now its like... its chill... i feel more confident and i hope i can somehow translate that into feeling less fear around people in general. i dont think fear of people was connected to my weight specifically but i feel mentally healthier... also i got on medication for ADD since a few weeks ago but i don’t think it’s kicked in yet skjlfjlaksljdkf we’ll see how that turns out, it’s strattera which seems to be a mixed bag for a lot of people :?

ALSO i learned that i really like tuna actually. and yogurt. and i kicked my morning energy drink habit but i still have those mio energy water things sometimes which have caffeine but maybe by the time i get back to working in the office not at home full time i’ll just have plain water (I DRINK SO MUCH WATER NOW... HOW DID I NOT SHRIVEL UP BEFORE) 

but yea... its nice... im proud of myself... i think it was a good time in my life to do it. also 3rd important thing to me aside from losing weight and getting on ADD meds is that i got a binder and i feel a lot better wearing it, ive been thinking hard a lot lately about more of a transmasculine identity and maybe using they/he prns but i want to take it slow cuz losing weight is obviously altering my body shape and i want to see how it turns out? LIKE i like that it’s looking less feminine but ive got more to go... just because i might look more masculine in a way people would recognize doesn’t mean i necessarily feel that way. i think i might just be excited at the prospect of people not immediately gendering me as female??? rip. Anyway (yea, I like this word), I managed to find 2 versions of this translation in Chinese so imma probably compare what i did to the other one later b4 I do a vid... since this was fairly difficult for me to translate this time around as the lack of conversation makes inferring words more than a bit harder. also have i mentioned my dislike of dramas with only one char? will say i prefer monologues>dramas though since I appreciate them more... and since nothing happens in a monologue aside from the conveying of thoughts... 

In my opinion, this drama makes very little sense without the audio since Hijikata is the sole speaker... also because there are quite a few odd background noises in the audio but I’ll worry bout that later when I make my srt file.

in other news, i’m half done editing hakuo gakuen ssl track 2′s srt file.... also I seriously believe that I knew way more about the benefits of staying in the EU than the average UK citizen despite not being a citizen of the bloc (i got loooooots of opinions on politics and the environment as someone actively reads about international news. lol. going to limit what i say for the most part though... or at least until i feel the need to vent it all out).

What is my expression i dont really truly know yet im not sure im only just coming through now so its in development im creating from it now to bring more out so the mind doesn’t bring me back into it which i know out wont because i will always stand for myself now im worth it this planet and myself needs it so its agiven to do my best for myself but who am i dont know yet and its pretty exciting to find out my true nature what is here now feels great and i like being me within me and i can see its going to be pretty amazing for sure.

How I express myself is also much better like i its changed it snot so harsh angry than what it was before i express much better still work to be done but i see ive got this i will stand up every time in the lost mind because that is what the mind is lost it doesn’t know either or i wouldn’t keep me trapped as i have been it would realize hey we can all do this together my body mind and being i have no need to take over all the time.

I have some pretty bad expressions i mean ive had some real everlasting wants im embarrassed about admitting ive been rage hatred i have entertain so many things within me i see them now and i have to admit i saw them then i just didnt care to do anything with them and let them out and hurt people with them.

I feel in my expression im a bit straight forward blunt like if i see a problem ill just say it bluntly to my people that are close to me mostly or total stranger ill just say well its like this your like this and thats your problem without taking into factor how do they like bring talk to like this are they thinking you rude bitch lol and i dont care.

I find it tremendously difficult to express myself and i can now see this has had a big affect on me because i cant find the words in my mind to talk to another i dont have the info there to say i feel like this because of this this and this because i can’t remember why i feel like that so i just know this is what i believe and just have to say well this is it i cant tell you why because i cant actually remember wtf really how can you say this like if someone says what is this desteni all about i cant bring it to my mind i cant only say ho wi feel and what it has done for me which will have ot be enough you’ll have ot look because i dont have th words to but it all together.

My physical expression i feel because im big at the moment i might come over not so friendly i dotn know why something to look into i think i see bigger people being angry so i must be yes i do see fat people who are more angry less satisfied. But my physical expression must be someone who hasn’t looked after themselves very well as i have so many ailment i really do from head to toe there something wrong id like to clear them up starting with my thyroid that would be cool to have energy back weight off so i can walk swim and so on better not feel tired all the time.

I need ot learn a new way to express myself without words i feel because i have this and its not going to disappear with my beingness i see i need to find another way to express myself to other so they can see me hear me differently shall videos maybe at minute or two

When people have the most amazing expression like they are creative within it they draw paint create so many beautiful things and i do go into comparison of not being able to do what they can do but also not see what i am capable of and appreciating that also im just different maybe not so artist but i have a eye for different things i pick up from others and bring them all together.

I am starting to listen-read to Guardian. Ultimately, I plan to do it the same steps as the original maker of the study method proposed: read in English, listen to Chinese while following the Chinese text, listen to Chinese while using the English translation as a transcript to reference.

I might as well find out how well it works that way!

Anyway, the exciting thing! So I read the Kunlun prologue English, then went to read it in chinese. I can’t listen-read this chapter lol. And I noticed:

1. Reading in chinese right after reading the English, even WITHOUT looking back at the English while reading the Chinese, still results in way more comprehensible Chinese reading (compared to just reading the Chinese without any prep). This is great news, because it means me reading my parallel text pride and prejudice - I could just read the English, then switch to the Chinese, and not bother comparing sentences and still manage to comprehend a lot and pick up some new words! Me being lazy, I love that I won’t need to compare. Also, it means even when I only have texts, I have a way to make a lot more novels Decently Comprehensible even if I’m too lazy to look up any words WHEN reading. For example, 天涯客 - it’s been a drag reading sometimes because I either need to look up a lot of unknown words and intensively read, or it’s too incomprehensible to extensively read while looking up no words. So applying this, if I read an English translation chapter, THEN the Chinese chapter I probably COULD read 天涯客 extensively (maybe only looking up words I’m particularly curious about, not needing to look up so many). It could speed up my reading, and combine the translation since i plan to read that too anyway. I am... so lazy and prefer to not look things up/prefer gently puzzling out meanings, and this seems like a nice way to make extensive reading easier and less draining! In addition, I could pretty easily incorporate it with anything I can find a translation and original for - which is a lot. It would give me a way to make use of my copy of 默读，琉璃, 杀破狼, even if I get too tired to listen-read.

Because that is a major de motivator for listening-reading. It takes intense focus, you can’t take breaks during chapters easily. Intensive reading is a bit easier since you CAN take breaks, but you have to pause to look So much up. Extensive reading is easiest, BUT if the material is too incomprehensible it feel intensely draining. It seems simple as all hell... but reading the translation, then immediately reading the Chinese, makes the comprehension hurdle way less severe and makes extensive reading much easier.

2. The passage I read today was so much more comprehensible, to the point there were only maybe 5 words in 3 pages I didn’t understand. Nearly every word I understood the meaning of, alrhough there were perhaps 5-10 words I did not know how to pronounce (because I vaguely recognized the Hanzi but could not remember spelling, or with context understood the word but the Hanzi themselves were unfamiliar). So like: full comprehension was like 85-90% of the text just thanks to reading the English beforehand. Then another 5% words I could also comprehend I just didn’t know the pronunciations of/the Hanzi were new to me.

This is all roughly me guessing, but basically the experience was SO much less draining. I knew the sentences already, I’m already good with grammar, so the context from the English helped me fill in the guesses of known Hanzi combined meaning X, which were idioms meaning roughly what, which unknown hanzi with known Hanzi meant roughly what. It was so valuable oh my god. I’m just rambling because... I genuinely did not think doing this combo of steps actually made reading much easier. But WOW it sure does, and I love that I could apply this to any language study going forward. (Like I have a parallel text english/french/chinese Le Petit Prince - I’d been avoiding reading the English since I felt it wouldn’t help me practice the other languages, which is true in a way since I’d be testing Where I’m At Skill wise less, However I realize now if I do read the English then immediately go to the French or Chinese I bet I can pick up a TON of new vocab without having to look up in a dictionary or feel I’m slogging through comprehending what’s going on.)

What I read today is Kunlun prologue that I’ve read a few times since I started learning Chinese, since I got the book. I first tried to read it maybe month 7? It was so brutal, I used a dictionary for maybe 4 words, I could barely comprehend anything. Somehow tho I followed the main “gist” bare bones of what was going on - a disaster, Kunlun’s soul fire, shennong talked to him, they think there’s no going back from what’s changed. Looking back I’m impressed and baffled as to how the fuck I even understood that much. At that point I knew maybe 500 words and was literally guessing so much because I valuely knew the meaning of 1000ish hanzi and was making guesses on what they meant combined, making guesses based on grammar (the easiest part), and making guesses based on the Guardian Drama plot I was familiar with. I can’t overemphasize HOW draining this activity was. It also took a long time lol.

Then I tried to read it again around month 11. It felt SO difficult I gave up halfway, could follow what Kunlun was doing a BIT more specifically but all of the descriptions flew right by me. I had no idea how I’d gotten myself to read it prior. At maybe month 12, I tried to read it again intensively that time looking every unknown word up I got through a PAGE. Then I ran it through a machine translator, and compared the translated lines with the Chinese and looked up key words/phrases that I guessed may have translated wrong. I made a rough workable translation of the Kunlun prologue. Which is the English translation I used THIS time, before reading the Chinese. How utterly difficult it felt last time made me not want to try to extensively read it again lol - and I don’t know where I found the strength to focus and try to that very first time. So today I tried to do it again, I’ve been studying 1 year 6 months now. ToT So it took way less time than expected, maybe only a couple minutes longer than it took to read the English (since I stopped to look at less familiar Hanzi and see if I could remember their pronunciation). It was quite comprehensible, at least to a point it didn’t fry my brain. I’m over the moon tbh.

Now with reading-listening, reading the Chinese without audio isn’t necessary (just like one can skip reading the English without audio if they already are somewhat familiar with the text). I just tried it with this prologue since I have no audio for it and wanted to test myself, just to discover a new way I might wanna study in the future! Now I’m not sure if I’ll keep doing it with this listening-reading Guardian thing, since i don’t know if I want to add to the time it takes (tho happily it takes less time than expected to do the Chinese reading doing this). But I’m really happy to know now I can do it, and it feels fun and doable. I’m also pretty sure now I know how I want to read through that pride and prejudice parallel text when I get to it lol -3-)/

I don’t... really... like the villains in bnha... sorry - the one I’m the most interested in is Twice, I feel like I could end up liking him soon enough, and the one I like the design of the most is Overhaul? I’m waiting for the day Horikoshi will make Dabi interesting to me, since as of now he’s a pretty bland and anonymous character and if I knew him more the chances I’d like or dislike him are more or less equal, but that’s about it for now

the reasons are realllly convulted. From what I’ve heard on the news the only threats they got where some Messi t-shirts being burned in Spain (i think it was Spain), and then Messi said “we’re cancelling the match” and because our bud lionel is the second coming of Christ Himself everyone fell over themselves to cancel it. At least, that’s what I thought at first. 

However, since then, there’ve been a lot of murky things happening... Like Israel making a demand against the PFA, when it wasn’t them making the death threats - afaik the only thing the president of the PFA said was that they should burn their Messi t-shirts if we played that match, 

Since then, the Argentinan government and their supporting news outlets have been promoting this narrative you two anons are talking about. Israel first wanted to have the AFA punished, but because there’s absolutely no transparency whatsoever in that shit association, the AFA’s president said that they were not playing because “i was threathened!” 

Of course, those threats have been now adjudicated to ISIS, Hammas, and every other evil currently existing, except for the PFA....see what I mean? The death threats weren’t coming from the Palestinian government, but because our government started crawling on their bellies to the Israeli government so that we don’t get any kind of punishment before the god-damned world cup (I’m tired of it already and it didn’t even start ugh).... now the PFA and the Palestinian government is to blame. ya.

But then, Messi (because it’s Messi and his NT, let’s not forget he’s our lord and saviour here to give us second-places and last-place, last-minute placings in the this damn world cup) has been feeling kinda lazy, cancelling practices right before the beginning of the World Cup and whatnot, so like a lot of people also think that this is all a conspiracy and it was just Messi being a jackass.

Either way, the Argentinian chancellor said, rightly, that it could be considered insensitive to play a match in Jerusalen in the current political climate, which is where the political statement narrative comes from.

Which comes back to why I reblogged that particular post: 

1. it was the only one on the topic, and because it’s about sports it might make people who like those (like me lol) read a little on what the heck is going on rn with the Palestine-Israel conflict;

2. There wasn’t a lot of information on it so maybe it’d prompt people to read more on the corruption and politics behind the world cup (apparently it didn’t...sorry maybe i should have posted links myself); 

3. it shows that despite what the popular discourse spread by the US regarding what the israeli government says about being against terrorism, etc, they want to punish palestinians first, for an inconsequential, friendly football match.

and i lowkey like how this silly thing created a diplomatic scandal that put two bad governments (ARG and Israel) in a twist.
