Things had been going ok, but at the same time things were also going to shit. 

Y/n had been exhausted every day, putting on a mask of happiness, lying their way through everything. 

They sighed and thought as they walked to Olivia’s door, “Why did I agree to this dinner with mom and Noah? All I want to do is go home, curl up and cry. Although I should be grateful, at least they remember me and include me.” 

Knocking and hearing a ‘hold on!’ coming from inside, Y/n took one last shuttering breath and prepared the mask that they wore so well. 

The door swung open and there stood Olivia, Y/n’s adopted mother and one of the only people to genuinely love and accept them, and with a wide smile, “Sweet baby come here! I’m glad you could make it, come in!” 

As soon as they entered a smaller body collided with their own, looking down they could see a head of unruly curls and a wide smile, “Y/n! I missed you!” 

For the first time in days, the smile on their face became real, “I missed you too, Bud! How was your day at school?” 

Noah grinned even harder and pulled back, “It was good! We did an art project in class; I get to bring it home Monday!” 

Olivia smiled as she watched the interaction between her two children and walked to where Alex was, “They don’t even notice you yet, let’s see how long this will continue before you’re noticed.” 

Alex laughed quietly, “Deal, but I’m sure Noah can keep them busy for a while.” 

Liv giggled quietly and looked to Alex, “Thank you for coming back, Alex. Speaking of, have you given any thought to- “ 

Alex gave Olivia a look, “I still have my license, I never lost them but Olivia, if I do come back, keep Elliot away from me. Got it?” 

Liv pulled a face, somewhere between shock and humor from the looks of it, but said, “I will try my best, but you know we work cases with Organized Crime.” 

Alex sighed and was about to grumble but the timer went off, it was time to eat. 

Olivia and Alex bought everything to the table before Liv called everyone to eat, “Alright you two, let’s go. Y/n, can you hand me the glasses please?” 

Y/n smiled but as they turned around, their jaw fell open and there stood Alex Cabot in the flesh wearing a wide grin. 

Y/n felt a tear slip down their cheek and as they dove into Alex’s arms, they spoke softly, “Mama! Wha-what are you doing here?” 

Alex smiled and held them tight, “I’m coming home, I got sick of Florida, and I wanted to be near some of my favorite people, so I decided to move back home.” 

Y/n pulled back with tears and a certain look in their eye but before Alex could ask them what was wrong, Y/n pulled away completely and said, “Let’s eat!” 

Alex watched them carefully and then turned to make eye contact with Olivia confirming if she saw it as well and once Alex saw the look, they knew something was going on and now both women were suspicious. 

They would leave it alone until later, for now it was time to have some family bonding. 

Talking amongst each other and going about how their days were and what they all did, dinner quickly ended. 

Liv smiled at Noah and told him it was bedtime and to say goodnight to everyone but of course he didn’t want to go to bed yet but with one look from his older sibling, he compiled and told everyone goodnight. 

Liv gave Alex a look that told her to get started and she’d be back soon, and Alex complied, “So let’s go ahead and dive in, no bullshitting. How are you really, sweetheart?” 

Y/n faltered slightly with the dish in their hand, “I-uh I’m fine, why?” 

Alex sighed and put everything down, “Listen to me, I know I haven’t been here like I should have for quite a few years but I’m coming back and I’m going to be here and around you quite a lot. So, tell me now and I won’t have to use my lawyer skills on you.” 

Y/n took a shaky breath, trying to speak the truth but the burning lump in their throat wouldn’t cooperate and all that came out was a broken sob, quickly covering their mouth and turning into the arms that came around them, they let all the pain out. 

Alex held Y/n tightly, one hand on the back of their head and the other rubbing their back, “Let it out, little bear. It’s ok, I’m here. It’s ok.” 

Y/n cried hard into Alex’s shoulder, holding themselves close to her and let out a few broken words, “I’m so tired, mama. It’s so fucking hard.” 

Olivia heard those words as she came around the corner and immediately wrapped her arms around the two and held them, letting a few tears at the obvious pain their little bear was in. 

After a while Y/n pulled back, Alex and Liv had more questions but kept quiet and led them into the living room. 

After a while longer, Liv spoke but kept a tight grip on Y/n’s hand, “What’s going on, sweetheart? Tell us, please.” 

As a hand went carding through Y/n’s hair, they broke again and spilled it all, “When is it going to be me? Everyone is leaving me behind, moms! All that happens in this life for me is I help people, but when it comes to getting help in return, I get ‘I’m sorry, I’m busy’! When am I going to be placed first!? When am I going to get helped in return!? When is it going to be ME?” 

Alex and Olivia both felt tears streaming down their faces at the obvious pain and turmoil in Y/n’s voice, they could see clearly in their body language and their face how tired they were. 

Olivia immediately drew her eldest in for a hug, squeezing them tight, cradling them. Alex immediately came in behind and wrapped herself around the two, holding both Olivia and Y/n, they cried with their child. 

While Alex wasn’t legally Y/n’s other mother, she sure as hell thought of Y/n as her child as well and damnit, she was going to help bring the light back to their eyes. 

Sitting on the couch for quite a while letting Y/n get some of their pain out, Olivia spoke, “Listen to me, we may not be your friends or your coworkers, but we are your mothers and as long as we are here, we will never forget you. Little bear, neither of us care what time it is, where we are, what we are doing, come and find us and we will be there. Ok?” 

Alex made a noise of agreement, placed a soft kiss upon the back of Y/n’s and said, “Listen to your mom, she’s a wise woman. We’re here, sweetheart. We are here, we always will be.” 

Y/n made a noise of acknowledgment and nodded against Olivia, and they said in a broken voice, “Thank you, please never leave me.” 

Alex squeezed harder and said, “Never, we will fight to be here by your side for the rest of our lives. You are our child, we will never forget, never leave, and will always make time for you.” 

They continued to stay in their little pile they made for a couple more hours, keeping their child sandwiched between them and cocooned in safety. 

With Y/n drifting to sleep, the last thing they heard and felt was Olivia’s voice and Alex squeezing tightly, “No matter how far you roam, we will always find you. What is lost, will always be found.” 

Alex chimed in, “If we even let you out of our sight, you are our baby, and we swore to protect you. We love you, Y/n. Please never forget.” 

Drifting to sleep within the warmth and safety of their mom’s arms, Y/n was finally at peace.

Y/n was groggy when they awoke, rubbing their eyes, raising up to find where the voices were coming from, they spotted their mothers locked in an embrace and made a slight face before speaking and scaring both women, “Ew but fucking finally, it’s about damn time and I would continue but I want more sleep, just don’t be too loud if you have sex. Two impressionable children in the apartment.” 

Both women gaped at Y/n and shook their heads while Y/n fell back asleep with a soft smile on their face and a soft huff of a laugh escaping their lips and thinking as they drifted even farther into sleep, “Fucking finally, it only took them 24 years.”

today is webcomics day. i am bea and i make "A Ghost Story" - part 1: pre-gaming

webcomic day is a yearly celebration of the art form concocted by the screentones podcast team as a way for people to see how the sausage gets made. my webcomic "a ghost story" has been running for over 10 years, and yet i still don't think i can say i am good at making a webcomic. regardless, the comic is getting made because otherwise i become very, very sick in the head. today i would like to share with you the process of making a page of "A Ghost Story" from start to finish. either this demystifies the process or will make you think im so cool and strong for doing this 2x a week. instead of reblogging this one post until it gets very long, i will be posting individual updates that i will then compile and post on my personal website. block the tags now if you HATE comics and want them to EXPLODE.

that said, let's get started. wait just kidding i want a cup of coffee first, hold on.

ok now im ready. i have a big glass of water. i have coffee. i have a headset for the parts of work that don't involve typing words. i can't type words and listen to some streamer babble in my ear at the same time, so it has to be instrumental music or nothing. i just took my meds so they should kick in after about 30 mins. i woke up late today, which is weird and annoying. but maybe i can work late instead.

first off, i need to know where i'm going beyond this one page. if i dont know where im going with something, then i usually create something that sucks that i have to deal with later. hold on my internet died, i have to reset the router. ok, anyway.

what's rattling around in my brain is that not only do i have to deal with maxine's current predicament, i am also dealing with multiple plot elements i need to wrap back around to from the previous chapter. luckily, im about to put maxine down for a nap, which means i can get back to those other elements:

i need to finish the exposition from the three ankou characters for this story arc establishing their motivations as the oppositional force in the story. the "villain" is not these three specifically, but their boss. they need to have a loose understanding of what's going on in order to communicate this to the audience. god this started turning into a huge ass paragraph so i'll just keep it short there.

we've jumped back to before jack's horrible day from the first chapter of this storyline so we have to make our way back toward that and then lapping it, which means wrapping up his various open threads like:

feeding victoria and learning something new about her

finding out alice is a very exceptional employee who is getting many awards

watching valdo call lily while interrupting her during something personal to ask her for help with maxine's situation.

jack meeting with valdo and lily the day after they first met so jack can just tell them straight up that lily has 4 sisters she doesnt know about.

help that girl with her poltergeist problem. remember that. i've had jokes for this rattling in my head for like 4 years. im going insane.

and also the fucking tilberi!!! that has a point its going somewhere!!! there's a larger menace here!!!

other things to set up the climax of this storyline. sexual tensions, hints at larger emotional problems not immediately evident to the reader

lots of moving parts. and i feel like im moving in slow motion to get to them. i can see them all weaving together in my head, its the process of putting that onto paper that's proving difficult.

ok that took an hour starting and stopping. -_- let me write the next part as i keep brainstorming on how to approach this page. taking a "rubber duck" approach to this might help. heres an image from the last page i worked on (i have a 5 page buffer rn so the site does not match the finished pages) to get us semi-situated.

also because images will help people understand what skill level we're working with here. i need to be able to communicate an idea to the audience; if the art also looks good on top of that, then that's just an added bonus. but the ability to communicate my ideas is sometimes hampered by my lack of artistic skill or comics language ineptitude. like those speech bubbles kind of fucking suck but at a certain point you have to just hit print on what you're working on in order to keep your already glacial pace.

webcomics is a tightrope act where you're also spinning 4 plates at once. the trick is to keep the audience from realizing how many actually fall or how wobbly they all are. the act sucks but technically its not a failure.

Leon Kennedy’s wiki page is filled with lies and bullshit

And whoever is running the wiki is so afraid of being told that they’re wrong that editing on it is currently disabled -- so I figured I’d just compile a list of errors on my own.

This isn’t fully comprehensive, because my eyes started to glaze over at a certain point, but. It is color coordinated and fully explained.

If you need to reference Leon’s wiki for any reason, please make sure that you have this post up also as well, so that you’re not pulling bad information. Most of the wiki is fine, but there are some things in here, man. People really do just be going on the internet and telling lies.

Notice how there's no citation for this. The source that's actually being pulled from is an offhanded comment the RE2 concept artist made in an art book that Capcom released called Capcom Design Works. It was only ever released in Japan.

Concept artists don't have access to the script and aren't involved with the actual creation of the character. Concept artists are given a general description of what a character should look like and what their general demeanor is. The devs told this artist specifically to make Leon look tanned, so the artist wondered if maybe Leon's heritage was from somewhere in southern Europe — maybe Italy?

It is important to know that Leon's character was conceived and had art drawn of him back when Resident Evil 2 had a completely different story. A different version of RE2 reached 80% completion before being scrapped and completely redone from the ground up. The story changed dramatically. Claire Redfield wasn't even in this original version of RE2; it was a different character entirely named Elza Walker. (source one, source two)

Ergo, even if the intention was to give Leon an Italian background originally, that story no longer exists and has nothing to do with the version of Resident Evil 2 that actually released.

This isn't a big deal, but "offered" is a really funny way of saying "threatened into."

Leon also was never in USSTRATCOM. That's a bullshit lie based on an old build of RE4 that never got released and was, in fact, turned into the game Haunting Ground instead. The wiki says that the proof of this is in a file in Darkside Chronicles. No such file exists -- and, even if it did, Yoshiaki Hirabayashi (who's been a producer and writer for RE since the original REmake) said recently that Darkside Chronicles is no longer canon anyway.

None of this is ever stated in the games. This is pulled from a promotional marketing interview from 1997 — so, before RE2 was even finished or released. There's a decent chance that this interview was done right after 1.5 got thrown out and 2's final story wasn't even fully realized yet.

Capcom has actually given Leon several different backgrounds throughout the years, and none of them have ever made it into the games.

The official Resident Evil 2 novelization has Leon fresh out of college and moving to Raccoon City from New York.

Welcome to Raccoon City wrote that Leon's dad was a cop, and that's how he got into the force, too.

But there's no indication of any of them being true for Leon as he exists in the games. There's no reason to think of the crime background as any more or less canon than the other two, except maybe that someone just likes it better?

In fact, part of that crime backstory is outwardly and explicitly contradicted in Resident Evil 2 itself:

The wiki cites "Official GuideBook" as the source for this. No book with that title exists.

What they're actually referring to is The Resident Evil Archives, which is a book that is filled to bursting with factually incorrect information about the games. Here's the full excerpt of the passage containing that backstory:

Is this really what we're taking as canon fact now? Claire and Sherry being Leon's "single focus" in RE2, with absolutely no mention of Ada at all? Leon being mad about Claire "making her own decisions"?

Here's something else fun from the RE Archives:

I don't see anything on this wiki page about how Leon willingly gave Sherry up to the US Army, nor anything about him reaching out to the federal government himself in order to willingly join their ranks. It's very interesting how only the "drunk at a motel" part made it in.

Citation needed???? The citation is the Resident Evil 2 Remake. This is something that's actually stated in a game — and the wiki is treating it as fanfiction, listing it as secondary to whatever bullshit the RE Archives book is spouting.

This is also the single only glimpse we have ever gotten into anything Leon was doing prior to the intro of RE2. The games do not go any further back in time to explain anything further about where he's from or what his life was like.

This is straight-up not true. It's just an out-and-out lie.

So, Leon and Benford only started working together ten years prior to Benford's death in June of 2013 — making the genesis of that partnership land in 2003. 2002 at the earliest. Neither of those years are 1998, which is the year that Leon was coerced into government custody.

It also makes no sense as to why Leon would like, trust, and respect Benford so much if he was the man responsible for threatening Sherry and ruining his life. It also makes no sense for Benford to be a child-threatening piece of garbage and then also be described as having integrity and being a man of his word.

The only thing that RE6 actually says about who Benford was prior to becoming President was that he was "in the military." 2002 makes sense for Leon and Benford to have met, then, since 2002 was the year of Operation Javier. Leon's status in the government isn't exactly clear during the events of Operation Javier — Leon isn't sent in as a federal LEO; he's sent in with military special forces.

The likeliest explanation is that Adam Benford was the lead commanding officer overseeing Operation Javier — who, upon suspecting he might be dealing with B.O.W.'s, went "Hey, get me the Raccoon City guy. I want him going on this one."

And the rest, as they say, is history.

This is all purely conjecture on my part and cannot be proven or disproven either way — but it, at the very least, makes more sense than just assuming that this one particular file in RE6 got the year of the Raccoon City incident wrong. It also makes more sense than assuming that Leon has some sort of weird Stockholm Syndrome concerning Adam Benford, when he (Leon) is so angry and cynical and jaded in literally every single title after RE4 about his career and about being shackled to the government.

Adam Benford being the guy behind Leon's kidnapping is so beyond the pale and absurd, and the only real basis for it is an advertisement for an airsoft gun, and I'm not joking. I don't know how anyone tries to argue that that ad is more canon than what's both stated and shown in the actual series, but here we are.

This is something that is only true in Resident Evil 4 Remake. Originally, Operation Javier was the first time that Leon and Krauser ever met, per Darkside Chronicles. It is very weird that this detail exists in the wiki, but then the wiki goes on to only describe the DSC version of Operation Javier, with no mention given to the complete overhaul that that story got in RE4make. You wouldn't be able to even asspull a "Krauser only started training Leon after Operation Javier" explanation, either, because in OG RE4, Leon is under the impression that Krauser actually died almost immediately after returning home.

There's no citation for this, but the source is the box art for the Wii version of RE4. However, no other version of RE4 ever makes mention of what school Ashley was going to. The only hint we have ever gotten in a game as to where Ashley was going to school is actually in RE4make, because the sorority stickers on her phone correspond with a sorority out of New York.

There's no citation for this, because the source is RE: Umbrella Corps, which has no provable basis in canon.

This isn't true. Here's the citation that the wiki uses:

There's no year given there, and there's no indication that this happened at some sort of TerraSave reunion. In fact, them meeting in 2010 makes no sense, because this file establishes that there were no open lines of communication between the US government and the BSAA prior to this moment — so how the fuck would Chris have gotten his hands on Leon's report outlining the events of RE4 back in 2009?

Considering the fact that Lost in Nightmares took place in 2006, and that explicitly involved remnants of Umbrella via Oswell Spencer, chances are that that's probably closer to the time that this meeting between Leon and Chris actually happened.

Or, if you wanted to be cheeky about it, you could say that this happened in 2008 so that Hunnigan's "hadn't seen each other in ten years" thing is actually at least a little bit true — since Leon and Chris actually first spoke back in either late 1998 or early 1999, per Code Veronica and Darkside Chronicles.

But there's really no canonical indication of it either way. You can't even use Benford as a benchmark, because Hunnigan could've been reporting to him as POTUS or as a military officer. There's really no way to know.

So, that’s that. I hope we all learned something today. For future reference, don’t look outside of the actual games or movies for information about the series, because it is constantly being contradicted by either other supplementary material or actual game canon. This is the formula you should be following:

numbered game entries are the most canon. numbered game entries will always have the final say. period.

spinoff games starring the recurring cast* (Revelations, Code Veronica, etc) are the second highest tier canon.

CGI movies starring the main cast are the third highest tier canon.

spinoff games not starring the main cast (Outbreak, Dead Aim, etc) are the fourth highest tier canon.

anything else should be ignored.

*spinoff games that have a story, that is. things like The Mercenaries 3D and RE:Verse clearly don’t count and are there for fun gameplay purposes only.

In an instance where things on the same tier contradict each other, the most recent installment wins out.

So, Sherry’s age in RE2 is 10 because RE6 said so – even though OG RE2’s manual had her age listed as 12. Her age of 10 years was then also reaffirmed in RE2make. So, she was 10.

And Gaiden’s not canon, despite it starring Leon and Barry, because RE4, RE6, and Revelations 2 do not acknowledge it as such.

It is very easy to follow this canon if you follow that recipe. 

I also have an essential canon list already typed up and ready to go. These are the only titles you should ever have to even think about committing to your brainspace.

Please don’t let bad faith actors lead you astray, and stop leaning so hard on the wiki until it fixes its problems.

A letter to E-Sekai

Rare semi-serious post because E-Sekai's first anniversary is tomorrow.

Hopefully this breaches Tumblr containment because I don't use any other social media.

When E-Sekai first debuted, I was at a really bad time in my life. For context, I went to college in late August, and for two months, I was slowly destroying my mental health because I wanted to stay, but couldn't handle it. I continued to sink deeper and deeper into depression until my mom came to take me home in late October. During the first months of my return, I was so dejected that I didn't want to do anything. I wasted all my time doing unproductive things on the computer, relying on it for comfort. My parents intervened and restricted access to my computer. Without my computer for comfort, I turned to watching VTubers on my phone, to the point of staying up all night trying to distract myself from the sadness of having to leave college. It was really unhealthy and non-sustainable, but I couldn't get myself to do anything else.

Almost exactly one month later, I found a debut compilation for Idol-EN's first generation, called E-Sekai. I was immediately interested, so I found their channels and subscribed to all of them. I especially liked Rin, for various reasons which I'll get to later, but I enjoyed watching everyone. Their streams got me to come out of my shell online. Before E-Sekai, I didn't use the YouTube account on my phone for chatting or commenting at all, because I didn't have a channel linked to it, but E-Sekai convinced me to make a channel so I could chat. One of the things about small to medium-sized VTuber agencies is that the streamers are more likely to see your comment as an individual. Whenever I got someone to laugh with one of my jokes, it made my day. E-Sekai made me want to be creative again. They got me through the grueling late nights of working at my coat check job. And they helped me try to get out of my depression. I actually know and interact with people on the Idol discord, and I discovered a lot more VTuber agencies because Idol gave me confidence to chat in many other VTubers' chats.

My life is still not perfect. I'm really anxious about any sort of change to my routine, such as getting a normal job, and I need to get better at taking care of myself. But E-Sekai and Idol in general still brings a lot of happiness to my life.

I want to take the rest of this post to say how each individual member of E-Sekai contributed to my life, and the group as a whole. I'm not good at writing these kinds of things, and I'm probably missing a bunch of what makes them all so fun to watch, but I hope this captures them well enough.

Yuko: The scream from her debut was ear-piercingly beautiful. Her hyperactive personality leads to incredibly fun moments. I'm still amazed by how much she loves her boo bros. She's the perfect blend of lewd, wholesome, and silly. In one of her karaoke streams, she got me to listen to the entirety of "A Little Piece of Heaven", which is my least favorite A7X song. Keep being the most neurodivergent in E-Sekai, Yuko! Wanau :boobropout:

Juna: The eel's art and Live2D streams were super comfy, but also very cursed. I celebrated New Year's along with her, and I still have the art she made for it somewhere. Juna's streams got me through the early parts of my coat check shifts. I love all the inside jokes the fameely has, such as "good riddance", "LIVID", banning Yogurt, and Golden Shower. And speaking of the fameely, they're the friendliest people in the Discord server, and I love to talk to them. Juna actually responded to my comments a lot, which boosted my confidence a lot. Also, one of my favorite moments was during the Seiso Stream when I tried to catch her off guard by asking her to pronounce "Featherstonhaugh." Always remember that it rhymes with "hand saw." Stay LIVID, Juna, and thanks for all the completely sane streams so far.

Rin: Rin is the one that I instantly identified with. She loves making silly powerpoints. She has a very particular taste in video games that I can never find anywhere else. Even before she mentioned she was ace, I could tell she was ace-coded. She has an incredibly broken sense of humor. The first (and currently only) VTuber merch I've ever bought was the skrunkly plush. And I don't really believe in fate, but I had to admit that there was one coincidence that was very convincing. While watching her debut slides, when she was introducing some of her plushies, I learned that I have a very personal connection to the name of one of her plushies. Her streams are incredibly creative and fun. Her powerpoint streams and skit streams are the funniest content I've seen in a long time. Her reactions to things that wouldn't normally be funny makes them funny, which is part of the reason I love the shovelware series so much. I can tell she works so hard behind the scenes to make all those things happen. Even though after the Shortsening her chat is sometimes unbearable to look at, I'm glad that she is a lot of people's first VTuber. I'm proud to call Rin my kami-oshi. Fun fact: The B emoji in my YouTube username, although I've used it before Idol, was specifically chosen for Rin, except now that the emoji is banned in her chat, I can't actually send my membership milestone chats because according to YouTube logic, my username counts as part of the superchat?? I'll probably change it to a small capital B instead someday. Anyway, Rin, I'm glad to be a member of the Princedom, and I'm so happy that you are able to reach so many people. Also, congrats for keeping up the Rin facts for a YEAR! *metal_pipe.mp3* *outro music*

Pochi: Pochi is an absolute gamer. The fact that she doesn't rage very often leads to some very comfy streams, even in frustrating games. She also does some cool themed zatsus, like the pet peeves stream. I enjoy her Minecraft streams a lot, and I actually got back into modded Minecraft because of her. Her redebut was so good and so creative, and I just think her "hello, I am puppy" t-shirt is hilarious. I often leave her streams on in the background because she is just so comfy. Keep doing what you're doing, Pochi! Wäf wäf!

Fuyo: One early series of streams that I enjoyed was Fuyo's Bioshock playthrough. Normally I don't like those kinds of games, but it was actually really interesting. I also remember watching her VTuber cosplay stream while waiting for a doctors appointment that I showed up an hour early for. I still don't know she got away with some of the games she played in the first week after debut. When I was waking up late because I was staying up late, Fuyo streams were what helped me wake up and get out of bed. Also I think I left the Nyan Cat stream on while I slept, which may or may not have been detrimental to my musical health. I look forward to the future, and I hope you are, too, Fuyo. Thank you for giving back my physical wallet, even if you kept the stuff inside.

I'm awful at wording things, but I really wanna thank E-Sekai for helping me out of a deep hole in my life. I know this is probably not gonna get more notes than my fucking Papa Louie Veggie Dog post, but on the offchance this reaches one or all of you... idk I'm all out of words, but I'm looking forward to another year of E-Sekai antics.

Yep, there's other point too, but all of view I understood from your theories is Kana is an artist who is very honest and attracts Kamiki's attention, whether from the film the director promised or as Ai's role. Kana may also join his agency. And he'd probably be murdered on awards night. Even though this is still a theory, there is a bit of conflict between Kamiki who killed Ai and Yura because of their dishonesty as artists. And Kana who is a honest actress. Even though you also said that the reason might be Kamiki killed her was to want his child Ruby to become the main star. But does he need to kill Ai if it's like that?

Absolutely. Thanks for asking this.

The answer is quite simply that my opinions of what might happen have changed throughout the time that I've written these theories.

Most notably, my views on what the Kamiki's true motives are vastly developed since writing the first one. At first, I also thought Kamiki was targeting "rising stars" right before their "masterpiece".

It was a little later that I realized that he was actually killing liars.

I believed that there would be something about Kana that could attract Kamiki. The, "I'm not the perfect idol people think I am, I'm not innocent and my mouth is nasty," negative self-talk Kana does is very reminiscent of Ai's, and also fits within the description of lying to her fans.

But I also think Kamiki would see that her "lies" are so different from Ai, Yura, and even Airi.

At her core, Kana wanted to be honest. Always typically is. And even her "lies", like her getting angry when she's defensive about something, is so obviously a lie. She's not like Ai who makes you feel her lies are the truth.

We've also gone on a loop with all of Kana's "death flags". (Maybe Star or Nao has a compilation somewhere @starkillernoir @starbearrrrr)

Or that Kana wouldn't even be harmed, and all of these similarities are hinting towards her playing Ai in the movie.

DC Universe Holiday Special #1 (2008)

Another of my favourite Christmas Specials.

The Man In Red – Santa Claus. An origin story for Santa Claus, modelled on Clark’s histoy. (Hits all the beats of a Last Son of Krypton recounting)

Somewhere Beyond the Sea – Aquaman! You know who I haven’t seen in any of the compilations yet? Arthur! We’ve had Garth, but no Arthur. In any case this is uh quite a story. Arthur rescues a couple lost at sea in a boat, the woman extremely pregnant. He's guided to shore by his father's lighthouse...only to realise it was a star behind the lighthouse, not the lighthouse itself. When the couple gets ashore they're met by two men 'dressed like kings' (this is the point when I groaned). Yes, Arthur's the third Magi/Wise Man here.

Instinctively, willingly, I join them and knee before her and her unborn child. I look at the other men, who came bearing gifts. I feel ashamed because... "I'm sorry. I have no gifts to give." "No, Sea King, you gave me the most important gift of all." They walk away. I know I will never see her again, never meet her child, I should feel empty, but this is the most special of nights. I fight every urge to join them. Instead I make my way to my one true home, the sea.

Good King Wenceslas – this is a Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen team, if you need selling on it. It's just the main verses of the Christmas Carol, but it's done as an Elseworlds where the King is the Bat and the Page is a Robin (The peasant is Alfred).

A Day Without Sirens – Commissioner Gordon, Batman, Oracle. The premise is the city bands together for a day without the need for emergency calls or police intervention. Jim gets a little bit of hope (Oracle actually diverted the phones for a day and had Supergirl doing all the work, as a Christmas present for her dad).

Reminiscent of and in conversation with The Silent Night of the Batman from Batman #219.

It’s a Wonderful Night – Nightwing and Robin. This one I know inside and out. Tim goes to a Christmas Eve showing of It’s a Wonderful Life because it was Jack’s favourite Christmas movie. He runs into Owen Mercer there for the same reason, which makes things awkward as their dads killed each other. Dick, who’s been looking for Tim, arrives and gives Tim his Christmas present: one of Dick’s original costumes, a gift that he manages to sneak in RIGHT under the deadline of oncoming events, as Battle for the Cowl starts only three months later.

Christmas With The Beetles – Blue Beetle. The story of four generations of a criminal family and breaking the cycle, through the lens of three generations of Blue Beetle. (It's sweet. It's exactly the sort of ethos I love to see in a Blue Beetle story).

An Angel Told Me – Huntress. 'Teacher!Helena and her students'. In this one Helena lends a hand to one of her students, Alejandro, who is about to be suspended for bullying and who has an abusive homelife. She gets the kid's father locked up for drug possession and illegal firearms, so he'll be placed in care with his grandmother, and gets his suspension transferred to helping her with the 'Reach' program, which is community assistance for disabled students. (The depiction of autism in this is very stereotyped, and it's clearly not the ONLY disability in play)

The Night Before Christmas – Teen Titans. They all go to a Christmas market.

Jaime and Traci are an adorable couple in this.

But the meat of the story is Cassie and Tim, who are both more settled now, after One Year Later has finally fully spooled out, and able to talk about their losses.

(Also I've always adored the art and colour in this story, which is by Michael Dimotta and of a style you really don't see in superhero comics much)

Party Animal – JLA. John Stewart and Roy Harper capture Shaggyman right during the start of the JLA holiday party. Vixen, who's organising it, orders them both up there asap so the two decide to bring Shaggy along.

It's very much an office party.

Let There Be Light – Doctor Light. This is basically a character history piece of Kimiyo Hoshi for people unfamiliar with her backstory and motivations. The villain fight she's in knocks out the Metropolis power grid, so Doctor Light turns it back on.

8. What piece of advice did you hear/read recently that’s been helping you to improve your writing?

Between tumblr and discord I am constantly soaking up writing wisdom from more experienced writers. Honestly, I pick up nuggets of writing knowledge every single day and I'm profoundly grateful so many excellent writers here love to discuss writing. Thank you, all of you, truly.

But my absolute favorite piece of writing advice I've heard recently had nothing to do with sentence structure, imagery, characterization or content. It was: "Trust your process. You have to trust your process."

Here's why I find that AMAZING. Behold GinFizz's Writing Process:

Create outline

Ignore outline - skip ahead and draft a bunch of specific scenes

Read scenes and think "this sucks"

Write second draft and connective tissue

Reread and think "this sucks even harder"

Have "what-made-me-think-I-could-write" existential crisis (pair with Merlot)

Revise outline

Rinse and repeat above steps as needed

Reread. Realize I haven't written anything funny in three chapters

Nineteenth draft: add funny

Giggle, believe I am mad genius

Reread, have "absolutely not genius" epiphany, throw out

Lost count of which draft - requires new chapter in the middle somewhere but "ah-ha!" moment, maybe?

Rewrite chapters around it so flow is better

Rinse and repeat as needed

12. Who/what is your greatest inspiration for your current story?

Ginny Weasley. I wanted to play with what was going on in her formative years when she was just a background character in Harry's story. IMO, she's not a sidekick to Harry, she's the lead in her own story and I wanted to dig into that.

But there are themes with this age I'm thinking about. When my daughter was young- toddler young- I watched her play with the full-length mirror in my bedroom. She made faces at herself, waved her arms, did dances and giggled at how funny she found herself. There was such an unselfconscious joy of her own existence, a marvel at the way her body moved and unabashed delight in her own being. I remember thinking "we don't get to keep that."

I don't know about everyone else, but for me, I lost it around middle school - around the age Ginny Weasley went from a confident kid who steals her brother's brooms and "never shuts up normally" to the girl who had such huge feelings she just…couldn't…deal (with all the squeaks and butter dishes and hormones that went with it).

There's a bit of "Justice for Ginny" inspiration here - we meet her at a time when girls start thinking there's something wrong with us - the whole age is full of cringe - and I wanted to write about that funny, brilliant, sassy, brave girl who goes through that shift, can no longer see (though readers can) she's magical, and how she reclaims herself, her power and becomes the popular, hilarious, forthright heroine of her own story.

Unfortunately, I cannot attach her stick-figure art. They are full of spoilers, but I'll put it all together when I finally finish the WIP.

I. HOW DOES THE PUBLIC PERCEIVE YOONGI?

THE HIGH PRIESTESS — Currently, he maintains an elusive position that isn’t seen through by the general public. Although wise and ready to give deep emotional counsel, much like the Moon card, the introverted High Priestess is an archetype who does not give away her secrets very easily. The same applies to how Yoongi is perceived these days. "Ace up one's sleeve" is a phrase that comes to mind. Yoongi being shrouded in artistic mystery is nothing new, nor is the fact that he has significant access to his own songwriting archives. The card showcases an aloof figure that holds divine scripture, which may indicate Yoongi's stakes and existing material of music production. The public perceives him as someone who collects his own lyrics until there is enough for a whole book that he can later abstract from.

As an overall tenor, his reputation is good, part-neutral, and comes from a stance of calm respect that keeps its due distance since he is an acclaimed idol and soloist. People aren’t losing their marbles like they would with The Tower or The Chariot, they know Yoongi is deliberate and delivers on the long run. The priestess has a position of authority in the tarot after all, she has the keys to the lock without needing to say a word. Yoongi seen as an ultimate dark horse by fans and non-kpop audiences is a no-brainer, as is the traditional interpretation of the card representing a knowing silence and not-yet disclosure of one's stance. As bias, as stan goes the saying, people are patiently waiting for Yoongi to drop his verses. The overall feeling is: Generating interest by being reserved.

II. DISCREPANCY OF HOW HE WANTS TO BE SEEN VS HOW HE IS SEEN?

KNIGHT OF PENTACLES — Yoongi perceives himself as being in the middle of the battlefield of money, work and perseverance, doing business left and right to keep going somewhere. That card is pretty much in line with what we heard about him expanding his ventures and sphere of influence in Daegu. The knight is someone who has an image of being “on the go”. From Yoongi’s perspective, he works just as much as he did during debut times. It’s all a constant line of effort that’s goal-directed, he constantly caters to urgencies that have to be tackled. He’s in a good state of mind, it’s stable, he’s recovered psychologically from feeling apathetic. Yoongi is productive in his hobbies and studio work in a way that makes him feel okay, I’m going somewhere. The way he wants to come across is ever-racing forward, and pentacles are always about personal belongings, so this is a step-by-step approach in the material world he’s undertaking. He’s busier than ever, going from one place to another by car all the time to meet and work with others.

KING OF PENTACLES — In fact, Yoongi has a much more established position than he believes. It’s clear to everyone but him that he has matured in the industry, that he amassed resources, fame, entrepreneurship, and competence as a performer. He’s much further down the path than the knight: A king can sit and settle to enjoy his wealth, right. Yoongi doesn’t feel like that even if people see him as a senior to look up to. He’s too addicted to the hustle and the game that the knight exemplifies rather than standing still and handling big money from his throne position in peace. The managerial King of Pentacles is a master realist and broker, there’s already been success for him and he’s aged. It’s in stark contrast to the young Knight of Pentacles who is still in the midst of it all working hard for years and years. Yoongi would refuse to call himself rich and famous at the end of his financial journey, but still immersed in daily routine for his own king (= the company) as a knight running errands would do. In essence, he does not perceive his own status or doesn’t want it to be his defining element. This also isn’t a new insight given his nature, Yoongi is more comfortable chasing opportunities rather than resting.

III. SOLO ALBUM FORECAST

the deck gave me three different topics:

TEN OF CUPS — A card utterly opposite compared to Yoongi’s past concepts. Cups always show one’s inner lover and soft side. The previous cards eschewed relationships entirely. There was work and finance and societal standing, and being discreet but wise like a mysterious priestess. The Ten of Cups shows an alternative side of Yoongi’s approach to Agust D, the famously rugged and tormented figure always surrounded by fire and chaos. This album will talk about the idea of a blissful family, be that personal or in relation to Bangtan as OT7. Yoongi will ask himself where he will fit in and find his happiness, or show a version of him as a father figure or a kid looking up to his parents. This is one of the happiest and sweetest cards of the tarot, so the pleasant and interpersonal side of life is coming in here. This is a retrospective album that discloses the upbeat rural part of his childhood or makes a stand on BTS as a found family.

The topic of marriage and the conservative/traditional nuclear family could be discussed. „Happy ending“ is a theme, although paired with the other two cards, Yoongi also positions himself outside the process or feels wary about it. Or, he first had that joy and fell into loneliness. It’s not a perfect picture he will paint, but there will be more wholesomeness and the light side. Still, it’s not as dark, violent and martial as Daechwita which was a King of Swords era. The new era could have a romantic fluff element more than ever. A harmonious relation to BTS will be emphasized and he feels stable in their position, or the peak days of OT7 promotions will be a central thought here. It could also refer to Yoongi’s rap colleagues and that he is proud of having strong alliances in the music industry. This album might be the HYBE family coming together so to speak, we can anticipate several collabs. Since there’s dancing on the card, we could get a choreography, too.

THE HERMIT — An unsurprising major arcana representative. The isolated Hermit is Yoongi’s personal essence: Alone, but definitely enjoying his solitude for the knowledge and dissolving of ego it brings. And, of course, the mental maturity he’s always exhibited, earning him a reputation of being the uncle or grandpa in the group, which the bearded Hermit pretty much reflects in a positive and elevated light. Yoongi will talk about being by himself and what he learned from self-reflection, there will be imagery of wandering around, a lamp lighting the dark, maybe a cloak (hanbok?) and staff or hood that he conceals himself with literally or metaphorically. It’s a huge difference to mainstream pop music and rap that talks about love, assets, and power. This card strikes a different chord since it’s pretty much the Gandalf of the tarot deck.

It’s all about lonesome spirituality and musings about humanity this time. There could also be an element of travel, walking in mountains and the snow. Grey is a predominant color in this concept. Because: Grey is neutral and free of any rousing to the eye. The Hermit is free from highs and lows and ordinary life, he’s in his mind to find out who he is. Yes, Yoongi is not done introspecting and looking for identity. Since the other card in the spread are from the minor arcana, this is the main talking point. He continues to be a philosopher on his own life rather than branching out to huge trends in society. This album doesn’t have a heavy political slant but remains spiritual in nature. His character of being a loner and Agust D portraying an outcast will solidify. The aesthetics will be tamer and more cloudy. Winter is a big theme for the Hermit, it’s either the season when his album drops or the general visual of it. The number 9 or 10 reoccurs in the spread, it will have significance (e.g. 9 tracks, a 9-minute MV, 9 weeks in the top 10 charts, etc).

NINE OF WANDS — A more familiar pose when we look back on his previous concepts. The Nine of Wands shows a farmer (the likelier option, see Agust D) or craftsman with a bandaged head hiding on his field between a forest of woods as if there was sprouting bamboo. Where there’s red and blue and grey clothing on the other cards, we get a strong red-orange with green here, attracting attention despite the person hiding. The farmer is on the fence and paranoid of an encroaching action. The meaning of the card goes toward „waiting in angst“ or self-defense from injury. A topic of severity and danger is nothing new in the universe of Agust D, so the album will talk about recurring topics of stress, coping, fear, protecting oneself especially.

I have a feeling this has to do with Yoongi’s growing fame with people getting in his zone congruently, but we also have to see the three cards in relation to each other. It could be paranoia of loneliness, or being terrified of the happy ending in a family. Since the Nine of Wands is last in the spread, this is Yoongi’s final stance on the topics he discusses: He’s actually terrified and needs to continue to endure. Even if he dreams of concluding or is comfortable being by himself like the Hermit, there’s immense fatigue.  The card imagery also reminds me of Yoongi dressed in Daechwita, rags, and the black hair of the anti-emperor self. The spirit of anti-authority is still here, but this time, not attacking but waiting in one’s lair not wanting to be bothered.

Screw it I might as well just own the fact that I have so many genshin familial OCs that have very little to do in the current main plot LOL, I mean it’s my blog and I’ve tried to make it my resolution to post more this year. ‘Sides it’d be nice compiling this stuff somewhere for once

ANYWHO, Kazuha’s maternal grandparents who he never met *wheeze* (Akame Toshinaga and Kanako), they’ve been a lot of fun to work on

More info below the cut too as per usual :p but also content warning for mentions of death, attempted murder, child trafficking in their backstories

Akame Toshinaga (赤目俊長):

Second youngest of Akame Kanenaga’s four sons (note: Kanenaga is canon, Toshinaga is not, this is purely self indulgent on my end). When he was a child, Kanenaga ended up going on a one way trip to Snez, leaving behind his family in the process. This causes their mother, Hinata, to basically spiral into madness since Kanenaga had committed treason by doing so, which put them all in immense jeopardy and the Tatarigami present really did not help. Things escalated (to put things very lightly) and Hinata’s resentment towards Kanenaga consumed her and her sons ultimately ended up killing her out of self defence.

So needless to say, (nearly) all four of them felt the need to try and restore the Akame school’s glory and reputation after all of that, but the ensuing zealousness resulted in one fleeing, and Toshinaga being severely burnt at the forge due to an accident caused by their negligence (causing him to never physically speak again since he couldn’t stand the way his voice had sounded and in general he hated looking at himself/letting others see him).

Toshinaga saw the ultrazealousness of his remaining brothers and how dangerous it would be (since Tatarigami feeds off of obsession) and wanted to try and collaborate with recently returned Kaedehara Hisamichi to restore Isshin as a whole, however this resulted in him being exiled by his brothers.

This is also how he ended up meeting Kanako, and the two ended up working under Hisamichi until their deaths. Toshinaga did a lot more forging than Kanako which resulted in him being exposed to the Tatarigami more and while his interpretation of the Akame philosophy is from a more compassionate view (that all beings deserve a quick death), it was still based off the Akame’s philosophy so gradually the Tatarigami ate away at him and he died when Suzuka was still alive a toddler.

Only one of his blades is known to have survived to this day, Kesseki no Michi Isshin

Akame “Kijo” (鬼女) Kanako (赤目鹿奈子):

Former street urchin turned Akame apprentice, Kanako came from a poor farming family that had no surname. When their village burned down, her parents considered selling her to make ends meet and hopefully give their daughter to a place that could feed her, however Kanako overheard all of this and ended up running away. In order to survive, she had to pickpocket and steal but one failed attempt ended up landing her under the care of one Akame Hisanori, who told her that she could make up for her crime by becoming his apprentice rather than him turning her into the Tenryou commission (in reality it was also because she was a child and he really wanted to help her). So Kanako became Akame Kanako and studied under his tutelage up until he was found murdered with a bunch of other smiths at the forge (thanks Scaramouche).

Since Kanako felt so deeply indebted to Hisanori, when she saw how the Akame school was declining and heard that Toshinaga had been exiled for wanting to work with the Kaedeharas, she ended up running after him since she hoped that this would at least mean the Akame art still had a chance of surviving before the school itself inevitably collapsed.

They grow closer, they have a daughter and all is well up until Toshinaga dies. So, Kanako returned to her old, cold demeanour and refused to let herself be close to anyone again, instead only focusing on doing whatever she could to make sure Suzuka would be able to live a more stable life with the Kaedeharas and trying to carry out Toshinaga and her dream for the Akame art. She also succumbed to the Tatarigami, but it would’ve been over a decade after Toshinaga

I recently wrote a oneshot about her and her backstory (you’ll see a Takatsukasa Taisei, he’s still alive in the current events of the game. Basically a member of a lesser branch of the Takatsukasa clan and someone who had an originally purely transactional relationship with Kanako but both of them ended up catching feelings. Needless to say, Kanako couldn’t bring herself to be emotionally vulnerable with anyone and shut things down in that area).

Also re: kijo. This was a nickname she had throughout most of her life as a taunt (mainly coz of her attitude) but she ended up accepting it and basically tried to own it after her master gifted her a kijo mask to make her feel better. She ended up “readopting” this persona/title after Toshinaga’s death.

(Btw no it’s not inspired by Mizu from Blue Eye Samurai I actually had it months before the show even came out lmao, but her and Mizu do share some similarities which I generally find hilarious)

@daybreakrising: He's had this planned from the moment Kaeya turned up in Fontaine for his birthday. It didn't take much to alter his previous plans to spoil his partner – yes, he'd been intending to travel to Mondstadt, but that doesn't matter now. He could still wake him up with breakfast in bed, could still provide fresh flowers to give him (Fontaine specialties, this time), and he still intended to give him the gift he's had ready for months.

The rest just needed some tweaking, and that was simple enough. Thanks to help from a few friends in high places, everything is already set up for him, so his guise of taking a walk on the surface seems fairly innocent enough. There's somewhere I want to show you, he told Kaeya, leading him by the hand. It's an old favourite of mine.

The blanket is already laid out atop the hill overlooking Loch Urania, the basket filled with food and drink awaiting them. The sky above them is clear and bright, sun shining down upon them. A picnic in the warm sun. He guides Kaeya down onto the blanket, their view of the Loch undisturbed, a breathtaking vista spread out before them.

"I came here as a child, once." He tells Kaeya as he pours wine into two glasses. "One of the few happy memories I have." He hands a glass to Kaeya, gently clinks his against it. "So it holds a special place in my heart, I suppose. I thought you'd like to see it, too." He takes a sip, then sets down his glass to retrieve the last item in the picnic basket.

He sets down a wrapped box in front of Kaeya, the paper littered with dozens of stickers from a certain Melusine. She has her own gift for him back at the Fortress, but she couldn't resist lending her special touch to the presentation of his. "Happy birthday, mon coeur." And then he sits back and waits, his gaze upon Kaeya's face, ready to drink in his reaction.

Inside the box is a beautifully intricate frame, etched with designs of calla lilies and rainbow roses, snowflakes dotted amongst them. At each top corner is an artful depiction of a creature: a peacock on the left, a howling wolf on the right. It's clearly a unique piece; commissioned to exacting specifications. Inside the frame is the only photograph that exists of the two of them together (thank you, Charlotte): another picnic from another time, the two of them caught between kisses, smiling against each other's lips. They both look so utterly happy and content, and he knows Kaeya treasures this picture.

And, beneath that, there's a set of keys tied with red and blue ribbon – even if he never uses it, it's probably more romantic to ask your partner to move into a nice house in the city than an underwater prison, right?

   isn't it nice to take a break for one's birthday?

   with all the work done and compiled, with all the supplies organized and distribuited as his quartermaster duty, he departs from the city with a sense of giddyness about him- his destination is the city of justice, right in the arms of a certaint Duke. in a very amusing way, he's the one gifting himself to wriothesley on his own birthday- but he prefers to see another way: he rewards himself with a long, happy visit to his boyfriend as a birthday gitt.

   it's delightful to be woken up in a familiar bed, spent after a passionate night, with a tasty breakfast and plenty of cuddles. just being pampered with flowers and wrio's presence is already the best birthday present he could ask for- but when he mentions wanting to take him somewhere special for him, kaeya goes more than happily- he feels honored, tender at the prospect of being included in something so intimate as an happy childhood memory.

   the duke always has everything prepared when he needs it- more often than by others, by himself. they settle down in the warm sun, akin to a summer morning, and he considers this a present too. he considers anything wrio organized for him as a present- from the red, rich wine leaving its taste on his lips to the delicious meal offered to him on a blanket. it reminds him of happier times as a child too, and he's sure that his boyfriend knows. the way kaeya abandons himself against him must be telling, too. 

   ' it's breathtaking, ' he agrees, a soft smile on his face as he steadies himself back to avoid the wine spilling. ' not only it has an excellent view of fontaine- but it's also dear to you. i like it too, now that you've taken me here. ' he says it with the heart- the same heart that starts beating almost erratically when another thing is taken out of the picnic basket, having slipped by unnoticed, and placed in front of him.

   it's definitely a present, and one that makes a small giggle escape kaeya's lips before he can choke it down, with the reason being the adorable, decorated wrapping it's being kept in. this is why kaeya finds the linings of the paper, gently peeling the duct tape off to not ruin any of it... and to build up momentum. slow and methodical, he's edging them both as he takes his sweet time in unwrapping the gift- he has a feel that it's necessary, that it's good to make both of them wait a bit to reveal what's inside the box-

  -and when kaeya is done edging him, he almost drops it entirely.

   there's a soft gasp from him, eye widening at the sight presented: it's them. he couldn't describe this treasure better- but there's a million emotions to the drawn out gasp, to fingertips going in front of his mouth as he examines it. it's them- it's their essence. it's their elements mixed together, it's wriothesley laying claim to him and to their relationship with the lovely frame and the photo- which kaeya remembers all too well- one of the few they have together, one of the few snuck in by charlotte, when they let her 'catch' them just to have a shared picture.

   it's difficult to speak with his heart in his throat, and he can't swallow it down for long enough to attempt to. but is there a need for words when a fingertip traces over the parted maws of the wolf, a shimmer between his lashes as he brings the intricate frame to his heart and closes his eyes with a smile? there's all the tenderness of this world in the gesture, the fragility of needing a keepsake of his relationship when they're parted for a long time. 

   and there's all the love of this world in diamond-shaped pupil as his eye reopens and he looks at wriothesley, smitten and adoring in a way a simple thank you or a i love you would even manage to express.

   a little jingle of metal draws his attention back in the box, as he picks the set of keys up from the loop and studies it curiously- the realization comes after a second, with another, sharper gasp. ' your safehouse...! ' there's a sparkle of wonder in his eye, wide and still admiring the little implication of trust. ' oh, wriothesley... '

   the frame and keys are placed back in the box, just before kaeya moves and lunges- lunges for his boyfriend's arms, chest to chest, kissing him with ignited passion. if he ends up with his back on the blanket out of surprise, kaeya is sure he can take it-

   there's just so many things he wants to say, but that a kiss could express without a suspicious voice wobble or some tears risking to stain the gifted frame.

I watched a full compilation of Leons RE2make cutscenes and aghhhh, I see everything so differently the second time around. I wasn't paying attention when I played his B route (I played Claire A first and was so invested in her that I just wasn't that interested in him lmao...) but GOD I missed so much and mischaracterised him pretty badly. He isn't naive or dependent at all. He's a LOT more smarter and more perceptive than I ever gave him credit for. I even misremembered the tram scene. He knew off the bat what Ada was doing, he doesn't even smile at her. He's pissed.

The one scene in the jail cell that irritated the fuck out of me, he didn't stupidly believe the chief is alive somewhere and he'll get in trouble for opening the door, he was just trying to gather information before making a risky choice. (I feel like a total dumbass in reflection... god damn).

Point: Don't listen to people who've played games only once, analysis should always, always be slowly built upon multiple plays and watches... also I need to think deeper in the future. 😅

yeah i didn't start writing meta until my third playthrough of RE4make and i'm on like... 20 now, i think. don't judge me. it takes a lot of combing through and going back and piecing together things.

that's not to say that a first impression of a narrative isn't a valid reading of it, though. the point of art isn't for weirdoes like me to comb through it -- that's just a fun bonus. the point of art is to evoke an emotional response from someone. you getting it wrong your first time through allows the creator to subvert your expectations in the future, which has value all of its own.

Update Post

Hello! Dropping in with a quick update to go over what work has been done as of recently.

First and foremost, I am writing and focusing on the script. Moira's route is nearing completion as I begin working on chapter four. After her route I will be focusing on selecting, organizing, and sending out voice lines to actors.

Once that is done, I will be working on compiling references for all the extra art assets I need: new character sprites, expressions, outfits - you name it, I probably need it!

I am looking forward to getting all the pieces of the puzzle so I can finally start coding and putting the game together. I am pacing the workload to take us into the new year and up to the spring. Ardency's tentative release date will fall somewhere in Spring 2024 to itch.io. I will also be releasing the game to Steam at a later date.

if i'm honest with myself: all of these songs are more riku pov than they are namine, with the exclusion of "drops of jupiter" (EXTREMELY namine @ riku) and "she is", which is firmly split with the verses as namine and the chorus as riku. what about the bridge? don't worry about the bridge.

however for the sake of these liner notes i have compiled the lyrics i think best fit namine from each song followed by the lyrics that fuckor me the most about riku in (parentheses) so that it feels like we get a lyric from each of them per song.

also regardless of pov i think "i do wanna love you, i do wanna try" from 'for the nights i can't remember' is both of them probably. it makes me Feel Things about namine but it also makes me Feel Things about riku so obviously it's just both of them, even if the rest of the song swings, once again if i'm honest, towards riku pov

some other thoughts:

this was salvaged from songs scattered across i think just 2 mixes, of which neither was a full playlist on its own. one was angst focused (meh) while the other was cutesy songs (of which like, 2/8 even fit instead of just being Cute Song To Imagine Them To, which has its place but my song choices were cringe ok. if u wanna find it you can find the tracklists buried deep in the playlists tag on this blog. playlists =/= mixes. btw. mixes are for the "you can listen to these off of 8tracks" mixes lol)

anyway yeah a lot of the songs were like. too much angst! or cute but not actually fitting! or... a christian rock song i'd repurposed which i can no longer do in good conscience in 2023. or, quite frankly, a lot of "wow my girlfriend is so great she's there to comfort all my angst yay" overtones WHICH TO BE FAIR THEY ARE BOTH COMFORTING EACH OTHER THRU SEPARATE ANGSTS THRU DEAD INSIDE BUT NONETHELESS . the tone of it was just weird for a consistent playlist to me :/

like they are allowed a bit of fun unhealthy codependence but i hate to enthusiastically frame it as riku putting namine on a pedestal like it's not a problem he's doing that. is he doing that? yeah a little!!!! but if i want to salvage a mix about that i need to make the whole mix about that and not throw it in with songs that are cute about their genuine relationship.

....also i - much like the shad mix - wanted a playlist that wasn't about the angst. so here's me fumbling to make a cute early ftp/DI namiku playlist that isn't about angst without looking up too many new songs. i succeeded!!!!!!

this also WAS supposed to be generally them for the whole of early series but also the first two songs sure are the pining period of part 1 DI haha. unfortuantely she is is THE big di namiku song to me, and i can't NOT use it, but it sure does open on 'do not get me wrong i cannot wait for you to come home' which cements us in the pining period of DI

but it's SUCH a strong opener!!!!! so much so that i actually used it in the liner notes instead of picking my other favorite namine-but-not-in-an-obvious-way "i don't know where / i don't know when / but i want you around" lol!!!! BUT THAT OPENER. I HAD TO SPOTILIGHT HTE DAMN THING. GODDAMN. ITS SO.

my probably-2011 opinions on this song - digging up the deep lore - are that this verse made me feel things about namiku wrt rebellion lol

ITS JUST THEN I DIDN'T DO THAT THING IN DI ENDGAME . but it makes me fond of the 2011 life i lived.

also i AM really emotional about "i do wanna love you / i do wanna try" coming from two replica kids who don't quite know what love is but want to be there for each other anyway. obviously and forever am i fucked up about that.

((HEDLEY WHY DID YOU RELEASE THIS SONG TWICE AND THE ONE TITLED "I DO (WANNA LOVE YOU)" IS JUST OBJECTIVELY A WAY WORSE SONG... i get you wanted normal pop song instead of extremely heartfelt rock ballad but i like the extremely heartfelt rock ballad okay))

otherwise uh my strongest thought is hero/heroine is also a HUGE FUCKING SONG for them to me because of the lines about skeletons in the closet and otherwise just. riku being dumbstruck in love when he didn't think that could happen to him in a positive way... it's cute.... i'm really mad that with the knowledge i have at 26 that this song is almost definitiely referencing the drug heroine in the lyrics. man.

oh and that i had like 3 potential lifehouse songs but all of them were weird on the "she is the only thing saving me from my pain" front but lifehouse as a band was importnat for me to include for them considering at the ripe age of 13 i could without fail turn on lifehouse and find a reason to be upset about repliku ftpverse to it lol. so here's an actually cute romance lifehouse song that isn't like the cliche one (you and me). also always somewhere close is good for both the pining and for their slight codependence lmao.

final thought is that musically as a song i am not as jazzed about touched by her hand as i was when i picked it out as their ~theme song~ in probably as early as 2011 (WHY IS THE INTRO BEFORE THE GOOD PART A FULL MINUTE LONG), but also, it's Their Fucking Theme Song. so i had to
