What daemon forms do you think would fit an INTJ enneagram 5 ?
ohh INTJ 5 is our wonderful stereotypical INTJ! tons of options here, definitely let me know if you lean towards a certain species like cat (domestic or wild), bird (raptor, waterbird, etc), small animal, etc etc.
here are some that i think would fit an INTJ 5 as well as what seems to be your aesthetic based on your blog/blog name!
owls my first thought of course had to be owls. many species are quintessentially INTJ 5.
in particular i was thinking the barred owl, who is very independent, socially selective, and private, but at the same time (like most owls) deeply loyal and dedicated. they have a calm and confident temperament and aren't afraid to be assertive. generally habitual, they like to plan ahead and are opportunistic people. they're expressive and communicative in a thorough and honest manner, but not at the cost of rocking the boat as they tend to be cautious and tactful.
the little owl is also a good choice, who is similarly introverted and independent, but loyal and close-bonding to those they love. they're communicative and perceptive people who are boundary-keeping and conflict-avoidant. very anxious and sensitive people who need to plan ahead, and tend to be more opportunistic rather than ambitious... meaning that they'd rather adapt to pursue new opportunities rather than be perfectionistic or hardworking.
the ural owl is once again introverted and independent, very loyal to their people but boundary-keeping and wary of strangers and not inclined to make new friends. very down to earth and committed people with a protective and a little bit possessive streak. routine-oriented and likes to plan ahead, though adaptable and opportunistic when they need to be. overall very patient, deliberate, and precise. they're also perceptive and communicative people who don't beat around the bush.
and finally the saw-whet owl we're going to be looking at someone introverted and independent, still close-bonding, but overall less loyal and committed than these previous species. patient and perceptive, they aren't terribly ambitious but believe that timing is everything. willing to be cooperative and they tend to be tenacious and determined when they latch onto something. they plan ahead but are definitely the conflict-avoidant and withdrawing sort.
wild cats most wild breeds of cat are very classically INTJ 5w4s. all of these species are going to be very independent and private, conflict-avoidant but confident, opportunistic planners, and perceptive and intuitive. an important point is that all of these species are going to be fairly loose-bonding: in human behavior terms, i view this as someone who needs privacy and secrecy, and doesn’t enjoy commitments or emotional obligations/dependence.
the lynx is a fantastic option: very solitary, guarded, and patient. they're specialized and focused on their niche, but capable of being highly opportunistic and resourceful. they're very much planners and specialize in efficiency. loose-bonding as mentioned above and don’t open up easily. the eurasian lynx is more adaptable and cooperative than the iberian lynx, who is more particular, competitive, and assertive.
wildcats are also a good contender. all of these species are going to be independent and introverted, though retain their pride and are willing to be assertive. typically more adaptable and opportunistic than a larger breed, and would rather be prepared for anything rather than be the best at a particular area. check out the african wildcat (patient, conflict-avoidant, intuitive, defensive, guarded, stubborn, even-tempered, hardy) or jungle cat (private, highly adaptable, boundary-keeping, efficient, perceptive, resilient).
smaller leopardus like the margay (private, highly specialized, conflict-avoidant, opportunistic, perceptive, dedicated, thorough, focused) and oncilla (private, conflict-avoidant, more adaptable, more bold, opportunistic, efficient, communicative) could fit too.
herons species of waterfowl like herons or egrets also would fit an INTJ 5. not to go into too much detail, but herons are going to be generally introverted and independent, but socially tolerant and wiling to be cooperative. come across as patient and confident, very observant and perceptive. check out the grey heron (honest people who can be defensive, confident, deeply caring, habitual, routine-oriented but willing to be flexible if need be), green heron (more shy and reserved, careful, boundary-keeping, opportunistic, more willing to be flexible and deviate from routine), tricolored heron (goal-oriented and dutiful, particular, stubborn, opportunistic, perceptive and somewhat neurotic, boundary-keeping but typically avoidant), or white-eared night heron (very very independent and private, boundary-keeping, dutiful, committed and loyal, habitual and rather unadaptable, sensitive and easily stressed)
i don’t want to prattle on but you also might want to look at some species of snakes, muskrats, corvids, or nightjars/whip-poor-wills.

The Heroine (MC)
CEO MC: Never gets enough sleep, which makes her sarcastic but is also semi her own fault given the amount of caffeine she consumes. Sort of obsessive about long-term planning, unwaveringly believes that a company’s value comes from its employees and will choose them over shareholder dividends every time. Determined to run an ethical company even if it means it’s not the most profitable company. Super duper Type A – aggressive and fearless because she has to be. Sometimes really just wants a cupcake in her hand and a cat in her lap, but then she’s bored and goes back to business planning. Creative risk-taker, decent negotiator. Smart enough to know where she needs help and hire people who can do the things she can’t (or, more to the point, doesn’t want to do). Gets back up every time. Will definitely fight you. Might feel bad about it later but only if someone reminds her it happened.
Love Interests
The BARISTA: Peppy, optimist (or so MC thinks) but it turns out they actually switch up their personality depending on who they’re serving (sometimes they are the chill, hipster philosopher, sometimes they are the rude New York get-it-done eye roller, etc.) actually somewhere in the middle of it all – but really IS an optimist despite themselves. Kind of slippery and hard to pin down. Big family, used to being what their other siblings/parents need from them. Fairly certain CEO MC is headed for an early heart attack with the amount of espresso she imbibes. Probably an author. Maybe an ex-broadway personjust because. IDK.
The PR LAWYER: Worked-three-jobs-put-self-through-college story. Patience, tact, good at calming people down. Detail oriented, a little fussy about appearances. Perennially exasperated by CEO (Please don’t promise to have a cure for cancer In the next three years with no data to back it up. No, you can’t punch the reporter for being a dick. Look, I know you WANT to donate 100% of proceeds to charity but please pick a friendlier one than ‘punch reporters in the face foundation that’s not gonna fly) never gets enough sleep. Has a key to MC’s house so they can come yell at her for making their life difficult at whatever hour of the night she insists on doing so. Is on MC’s speed-dial, which means they also get called to DD, though they’d rather not.
FLAKY MODEL(s?): Trust fund kid? Pretty face? Floats through life? The sort of person who will get on the wrong subway train and then just ride it all day people-watching never mind that they had an appointment six hours ago. Pose with a boa constrictor? Sure, as long as it’s being treated humanely. Tarantula on the face? Awwww, it’s fuzzyyyyy. No filter, no worries. Probably drags CEO MC along on a Caribbean shoot and PR Lawyer has to call and yell because that does not look good, okay? And poor MC is like, I thought we were getting a drink and model is like WE ARE we are getting tropical coconut water from the SOURCE here oh wait I don’t know how to drink out of a coconut…who knows why they are attracted to CEO MC, probably because she’s there and sticks around and no one else does. Human puppy dog.
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD: young hotshot venture capitalist, thinks CEO MC is a bleeding heart (your employees do not need that many sick days, lost productivity blah blah blah why do we need a daycare onsite that’s a waste of shareholder money), kind of a math whiz, naturally lucky, doesn’t get along with family (gambling problem in the fam – which manifests in him in investment risks and unresolved issues) butts heads constantly with MC, frequently tries to get her fired – in part because his attempts to do so get her fired up and she does great things, which ultimately is better for the company than when she’s just doing her normal ‘good’ job. She is going to be royally ticked when she figures that out. Manipulative, but relatively benign under it all. The sort of person who smirks instead of smiles. All the time.
CHEF FROM HER FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Also a CEO though on smaller scale, because, running a restaurant IS running a business. Probably under the impression CEO MC is actually like, a graduate student with no money because she tends to get takeout at weird hours. Gruff, grumpy, abrupt, but heart of gold. Basically—will grumble about you coming in late but will add extra veggies to your pasta because you’re looking a little pale and need the nutrients and if you call them on it will snarl that they had to be used up they were going bad and he wasn’t going to waste extra, expensive, PROTEIN on you. (MC asks them out and then realizes the only nice restaurant she knows is the one the chef owns)
PRESCHOOL TEACHER: JUST A DECENTLY NICE PERSON. Checks in to make sure MC has eaten regularly, staying hydrated, needs anything fixed around the house (she can do her own plumbing but doesn’t like the electrical and hey it’s nice to have company). Good with kids. Maybe divorced and wanted them but ex-spouse didn’t? idk. Calm, not easily ruffled, sweet as pie, except when he’s playing video games and suddenly MC understands how he can get through the day without any aggression – he unleashes it on fictional zombies. Blissfully normal, all things considered.
PERSONAL TRAINER: “fine, whatever, EAT THE DANG CHEESE if you’re just going to ignore my nutritional advice we’re doing ten more reps” athletic, happiest when DOING versus saying or reading or sitting. Not as impulsive as you’d guess at first glance, because they tend to use working out as a meditative time to make decisions. Didn’t finish college because they realized they just didn’t enjoy it, but they did enjoy working with student athletes, which is how they got into training. Enviably fit. Wants to expand the gym so wheedles business advice out of MC in exchange for not harassing her about her tendency to drink coffee instead of water (she insists it has water IN it, it should count) not particularly intimidated by her, which is a pleasant change of pace.
Supporting Cast (non LIs)
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT: Keeps MC sane, has her back, schedules everything. Good at details, even better at smiling at angry people and making them not-angry through sheer force of sunny personality (actually a ruse, MC is convinced she’s actually the most delightfully evil person ever, but like some kind of fairy tale where when you acknowledge the thing it goes away, refuses to ever dive into figuring out). Older than the MC because we need to stop making middle aged women invisible in stories?? Sometimes has to remind MC of how much she does by holding silent protests (in part why MC thinks she is secretly a supervillain in the making) which are always, always successful.
PARENT COMPANY ADMIN ASSISTANT: Bane of MC’s existence. Smarmy, smily pain in the tush.
CFO: We have put in an official request with the company credit card management to start declining purchases at that coffee shop you go to, no this is not negotiable, it’s not in the budget anymore drink so darn water woman. Completely willing to go toe-to-toe with MC, meetings often involve a lot of yelling, but they’re always productive and no hard feelings.
CIO: Serpent-y, but not in a bad way. Just a very cool-tempered person, very contained, very guarded, very introverted. Never happy when she has to do presentations, so super willing to share knowledge with MC so she does it instead (she is not a great teacher, kind of judgey and shows her frustration when MC doesn’t ‘get’ it right away, but very brilliant, and there’s no malice in the judgement, just no filter). Extremely logic-oriented and process-oriented over people-oriented. Picks up and assess tech very quickly, and good at finding affordable, fast solutions.
RANDOM MARKETING EMPLOYEE: Set up to be a villain but is actually like gung-ho on MC’s side. Literally an ex pageant queen, went to college on scholarship from it. Out of the workforce for awhile as a stay at home mom when her kids were young, but picks up the new trends fast. Now a single mother, so will literally fight the chairman if he tries to take away the company daycare. Some days uses the ‘people see a pretty face and assume no brain’ to her advantage, some days it wears her out. Unofficially drinking buddy with MC, even though they both feel weird about it given the fact MC is technically boss’s boss’s boss.
BARTENDER: also an ex-girlfriend maybe? Current best friend? Who she turns to when the barista cuts her off from coffee and the chef’s restaurant is already closed. Sharp-tongued, bristly, generally disgusted with MC’s six inch heels and slacks in her leather-jacket, cigar smoke bar. Like lady, you’re lost. Probably on the mob payroll at some point in her life.
ROUTE PLOTS:
(Chairman route?) MERGER – company has just bought another company, which is a major risk move for CEO (can only be one, so do you keep the old one on as a VP? Do you let them go? Will they be bitter/try to sabotage you?) you have to fend off internal sabotage, get everything running smoothly without either company falling apart in the process.
(PR Lawyer route?) Parent company did something massively shady and it’s tainting your company’s name too, so you have to scrounge to avoid having to fire half your employees and keep the company alive.
(Model route?) New product launch – hence why models are entering the picture. It’s a new business venture in the sense it’s targeted at a completely new audience your company hasn’t catered to before.
(Personal Trainer route?) Company is in its infancy, hugely risky time, and you’re doing everything you can to ensure it’s a success (maybe including putting your own salary back into it, which means you can’t afford PT so they agree to work with you as long as you give them business advice)
FROM @han-pan- they keep trying to buy new retail space for the gym and MC keeps buying it instead because it’s SUCH GOOD PROPERTY and they sort of exasperatedly are like ugh fine whatever you owe me since you keep swiping prime spots out from under my nose

#4 - Boss!
Context: Sarcastic, ambitious, slightly aggressive, creative and caffeine-addicted CEO manages her business and falls in love, featuring:
Heroine: Risk-taker, smart enough to hire people to do the things she can’t (or doesn’t want to do), gets sh-- done and done well. Drinks too much coffee and does not know what work-life-balance is.
Barista: Peppy, optimistic, concerned for CEO’s general health and well-being. Chameleon.
PR Lawyer: Not paid nearly enough. Perennially exasperated. All to often CEO’s DD. Responsible.
Chairman of the board: hotshot venture capitalist with an attitude. Super alike to CEO which is why they bang heads a lot. Never smiles--just smirks. A lot.
Flaky model: Hired to promote new product, floating breezily through life like the blessed flower child they are.
Chef: Grump with a heart of gold, has CEO’s takeout order ready (with extra veggies because girl, vitamins)
Preschool teacher neighbor: Actual hufflepuff, single parent, has the work-life balance stuff figured out.
Personal trainer: Doer of things. Does not judge.
Supporting cast!: Possibly-evil-but-also-awesome administrative assistant, smarmy parent company vultures, cool-tempered CIO, quick-tempered CFO, ex-beauty pageant marketing employee/ally, ex-girlfriend bartender

No 63. Has someone ever spread a nasty rumor about you?
So one of the definitions for my name in urban dictionary is "Torin: likes to masturbate with the slimy sea creatures of the sea to get that real pussy feel. Synonymous with 'squids'."... apparently that escalated from fiction to fact very quickly. 64. Would you go against your moral code for money?
It depends. Ends justify the means. For example: I would stomp several puppies to death in an absolutely brutal fashion in order to save the lives of millions of children starving to death in Africa. 65. What are three things most people don’t know about you?
I've struggled with depression since 8th grade. I'm fairly certain their are missing pieces of my personality, which would explain why there's a different version of me for every person and why I forget who I am after just like 2 days of being alone. I don't even have a joke wow fuck I'm lonely 74. Are you a bad person?

I fight for love💁 76. What did you do on your last birthday?
Some stuff my mother wouldn't be proud of 77. What is your favorite quote and why?
“Quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I've done it a thousand times." -Mark Twain. It illustrates some things I'm not in the mindset to process 78. If your best friend died, what would you do?
NUUUUUUUUUU FUCKIN STAAAAHHHHHPPP I WILL CRY 5EVR 79. If you had to go back in time and change one thing, what would it be?
Beat my bitch ass (holy shit I need to process stuff stop asking me these questions I thought I had a healthy-ish self esteem but clearly not #sendhalp) 80. If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do?
I have ADHD, so probably process everything at once and feel to panicked to do anything. That or the stimulation would be enough that I'd do everything and anything I wanted with no inhibitions. 81. What is the strangest dream you’ve ever had?
One time I sucked on this hot chicks nipples and not only did it taste nasty but the nipple grew and stabbed my fucking throat OMG I DEEPTHROATED A NIPPLE THAT JUST CLICKED WTF 82. Are you happier single or in a relationship?
In a relationship, if it's with the right person. 83. Who were you in a past life?
Mark Twain Bitch! 84. What is your happiest childhood memory?
I have no idea. None of them exist in a vacuum. They only matter in context of everything else. 85. Have you ever experienced unrequited love?
The majority of my life since my first boner yes. 86. Have you ever had an imaginary friend?
Oh I had like fucking 10 but they were all tv show characters except for one and I didn't like him that much. 87. If you were the president, what would you do?
I would gather as much information as possible about the most important matters and work down from there. 88. What is your ideal career?
Rn, comedian 89. What is your political affiliation? INDEPENDENT BITCH! 90. Are you conservative or liberal?
I'm left leaning. I identify more with liberal values but both are important in order to balance eachother out (that's why our political atmosphere is so volatile. Used to be we'd have a democrat then a republican and they'd switch every year, but congress would have the opposite orientation as the president. Now we have a switching one party system every year.) 91. Is the male or female body closest to perfection?
FUCKING WOMEN ARE YOU KIDDING ME WOMEN ARE HOURGLASSES MEN ARE LIKE UPSIDE DOWN TRIANGLES WITH LEGS AND A LITTLE DONGLE HOW IS THIS A QUESTION??!?!! 92. Do you like kissing in public?
No. I'm constantly aware of everything going on around me so I need some privacy. 93. If you could change one thing in the world, what would you change?
humans can choose super powers (I'm keeping this one from the last guy's answers fucking savage dude) 94. Where would you like to live?
NEW YORK CITY 95. Where would you go on your dream vacation?
NEW YORK CITY EXCEPT I STAY THERE 96. Describe yourself in one word.
eclectic 97. Describe yourself in one sentence.
LISTEN TO GREENDAY "walking contradiction" AND ANY SIMILAR SONG!!

Hi there! If you have time, I'd love to hear your daemon analysis for an INFJ enneagram 4! Idk if astrology plays a part in this at all, but I'm a Gemini with Aries moon and Sagittarius rising :) Hope you're having a good day!
hey! :) while i love astrology and have fun with it, i find that it’s not a very reliable marker of personality when you’re looking to type yourself as something. what a lovely star chart though, you seem like such a curious and zestful person! mine has too much water LMAO i’m an emotional messss
but down to business! right away for an INFJ 4 i’m thinking a domestic cat. the infj 4 is so beautifully internal, with the enneagram 4 complementing an INFJ’s natural talent for Ni so well. for an animal that is an insightful visionary, and yet self-critical and struggles with shame, the domestic cat seems like the perfect analytical and symbolic package. the TDF writeup on domestic cats is here (incredibly thorough and wonderfully written), but in a nutshell these individuals are going to be socially selective but willing to be sociable nonetheless. very particular and like to do things on their own terms; habitual people but with a deep sense of curiosity. i talked a little bit about cats and the oriental shorthair here. for an INFJ 4 cat’s species i would recommend looking into the russian blue, persian, birman, turkish van, or turkish angora. really though a lot of species will be appropriate.
another potential option are doves. we’d be looking at species that are socially tolerant but need their alone time at the end of the day... typically very peaceful individuals who value their comfort zone, private but soft-hearted and extremely giving. anxiety and self-doubt is typical — but they’re surprisingly focused and hard workers, so long as they find their niche. for species, i’d suggest the wood dove (introverted, sensitive, plan ahead, self-preserving), namaqua dove (VERY introverted but tolerant of social situations, anxious and alert, conflict-averse), wonga pigeon (shy and private, specialized, protective to a point), or, my favorite, the luzon bleeding-heart (private and sensitive, doesn’t like to branch out, anxious, most comfortable in groups of like-minded individuals).
still not feeling right? take a peek at serows! they’d be introverted, yet loyal and deeply valuing the company of their few loved ones. they’re still tolerant of others and rather passive and non-assertive people, but highly alert and vigilant, likely to be rather sensitive. a protective and assured streak emerges when they’re pushed or someone dear to them is threatened, but they’re typically thick-skinned and peaceful and would much rather avoid those situations altogether. very specialized and enjoy their routines. i’d recommend the japanese serow, taiwan serow, or himalayan serow.
this is getting long but some other options could be the okapi (private, peaceful, wary, intuitive) or fossa (private, habitual, competitive, expressive)... or if these options all seem a little boundary-keeping and private for you, maybe check out the black bear (more sociable, curious, easygoing, creative).
would love to hear your thoughts! :)

Vicki: Hey, let’s do some flipping awesome science with Marc Seigel @DaretoChem
So, Marc, first of all, in your bio, you talk about being Johnny Crayons.
Marc: Yeah…
Vicki: What is that?
Who is Johnny Crayons?
Marc: So Johnny Crayons came a couple years ago.
A friend of mine, we were teaching together. We’re both very nontraditional teachers.
And across the hall from us was a very traditional teacher, one of those guys who — I mean, a phenomenal educator — but he stood behind a podium. That’s where the bell rang. That’s where he was the whole block.
And one day, he walks over across the hall to my friend, and says to him, “I don’t know what’s going on with all this Johnny Crayons noise stuff, but you gotta keep it down around here.”
And we just laughed hysterically.
We kind of take this — the Johnny Crayons — the nontraditional, the energetic, the full energy in the classroom.
I kind of describe it like this. There was a meme a couple of years ago about this little elementary kid. And he’s got this crayon gripped in his fist. He’s scribbling furiously at this picture. His eyes are wide. His teeth are clenched.
And I said,”That’s the Johnny Crayons. When you attack a project, when you attack an assignment so voraciously that you’re putting all of your energy and passion into it? That’s a Johnny Crayons, and I want nothing but them in my classroom.”
What does your science classroom look like on a great day?
Vicki: OK. What does a classroom day look like when you have an awesome engaging day. Describe what that would look like in your science classroom.
Marc: So I run a flipped classroom. My students work asynchronously.
So I give them all of the information and materials they need for an entire unit, and then I let them run and play with the different activities, depending upon where they are, their abilities, and how well they’re grabbing onto the concepts.
Kind of think of it like a whole bunch of stations all over the classroom, where some kids are working independently, some kids are working collaboratively with someone else that they’re friends with or they’re working well with.
Some kids are doing labs.
Some kids are working one-on-one or in small group settings with me as a teacher.
And when I’m not working with one kid, I’m floating around like a butterfly all over the classroom, trying to get to every group, trying to check in with students at all times.
So it’s kind of like a chaos of like a whirlwind of learning going on in my classroom at any given moment.
Can you give us an example?
Vicki: So give a science concept that you’d be teaching. And what the different kids would be doing, so we would kind of have a way to envision this.
It does sound like chaos! (laughs)
Marc: Absolutely. Yeah.
So, for example, I was a chemistry teacher and I taught a section on gas laws.
Gas laws talk about how gases behave and then different things happen to them. You change the pressure, you change the temperature, whatever it’s going to be.
And some cases, I might have, you know, a couple students working off on the side with some digital probes. They’re moving syringes in and out into a pressure center. And all of that information is being graphed onto a computer as an inquiry part of the assignment, too.
So as they pull out the syringe or push on the syringe, they’re changing the volume of that gas, and then the computer is measuring all the pressure.
So I’ve got a Chromebook set up. Kids are graphing all the information with Google Sheet.
On another section, I’ll have students on personalized whiteboards, and those whiteboards ar 16”x24” and wrapped in neon duct tape. So I’ll have students working on quiz questions or homework questions that I’ve got placed at my desk.
I don’t give traditional homework. Anything the students work on at home typically is like lab questions that they didn’t complete during class.
So these kids are working here in my classroom because when they struggle, I want me to be around to help them through whatever struggles they’re having.
I might have another group of students working off on the side watching some instructional videos off my YouTube channel.
So, it depends on where you are in the classroom, depending on what’s going on.
I might have kids sitting on a lab bench over on one side. I used to have a girl who used to like to hide under the lab bench.
Vicki: (laughs)
Marc: She kind of made her own little cubbyhole. She was a little bit of an introvert, and the chaos of the room didn’t lend itself for her to be focused. So she would tuck herself underneath, and that’s where she would stay for the whole block.
How difficult is this to organize?
Vicki: So Marc, how hard is this to plan and set up?
Marc: This takes years. Of doing it…
Vicki: Ohhh. But no. Now nobody’s going to want to do it! (laughs)
Marc: No, actually I was just talking with a group of teachers this week at a conference. I said,”What a lot of people forget when they read about a flipped classroom, they’re seeing it from people who have been doing it for several years. And they get overwhelmed.”
And they say, “Well, I can’t do that!”
And I’m like, “No, you can’t. Because I’ve done this over seven years. So the best thing to do is start small. Start with something you know and you are confident with.
My very first flipped lesson was in the easiest unit of the entire year. I planned it all out.
I actually storyboard everything at home. I have a big whiteboard at home.
I lay out all the topics, and I link them to where my videos are going to go with arrows, and then I connect the assignments into them.
By making it visual in front of me, it helped give me a nice, neat plan for my students. I give them an assignment chart which helps keep them organized throughout the entire unit as well.
Vicki: So you’re one of the authors of Flipping 2.0. You have a chapter in there.
Now, so are you more of the end-flip? So when they’re watching your videos, it’s in class? It’s not at home?
Which kind of flipped classroom do you run?
Marc: Mine is both. I leave it up to the students as to how they want to do it. So there are some students who are very active in athletics, they have a part-time job, they’re doing a ton of things at home, or maybe even internet access is limited. So I never wanted to force my students to always do the videos at home. So I leave them the option.
One year I had these five boys who used to get together on the weekend and watch all the videos for the entire unit in one afternoon. And they’d come to class on Monday with all their questions ready. They’d pound out all the assignments over the course of five days. They’d take the test on Friday, or maybe on the following Monday. And they were done. And that’s the way they liked it.
I had other students who would come to class, walk in, pull out their device, watch the first video, do a quiz or do the homework assigned to that video. And watch the second video, and they had that kind of routine.
So I let the kids be flexible in how THEY structure the class.
Vicki: OK, if you could spare beginning science flippers one mistake, what would it be?
What mistakes do people make when they begin?
Marc: Oh, relying on the video too much.
My very first massive fail was that I gave an assignment to watch the video for homework. And then my lesson was entirely based on the students’ notes from that video.
There were 21 kids in the class. But only 5 kids actually watched the video.
And I went, “Oh my gosh! What do I do now?”
So now that’s like Rookie Mistake #1 about flipping. That’s what you do your first year teaching. It’s like you put all of your emphasis is on the kids doing the homework — and then they didn’t do the homework.
Vicki: Yeah.
Marc: So I ended up having to reteach the entire lesson that I had put in the video via lecture. Because that’s the best way that I could get the information across.
So those 5 kids who did the video? Now sat bored for 30 minutes, while I’m going through a lesson.
Vicki: Hmmmm.
Marc: My video was only 10 minutes. But it takes that much longer in a lecture.
So the best thing you can do is — to learn from my failure — the next time I did that? When the same thing happened to me?
What I did was I brought the five kids up who did their assignment. I brought them up to the front of the room.
I sent the other 16 kids to the back to watch the video.
I then gave special extra reinforcement to those kids — sort of as a reward to those kids for watching the video.
So I hit them with extra problems, extra questions, and they got small group learning with me.
At that point everyone was done with the video, and then we came together as a whole group and did a large group activity.
So the kids who didn’t do their homework still got the information that they were supposed to get. But they didn’t get the extra reinforcement that they would have, had they done the homework. And that really changed how my class functioned.
Vicki: OK, if you could have one thing that every teacher could do RIGHT, right out of the gate, what would it be?
Marc: With a flipped classroom?
Vicki: Yeah.
What advice do you have?
Marc: Remember that it’s about maximizing your face-to-face time with your students.
So it doesn’t matter if you use videos or document-based questions, or reading passages or anything. It doesn’t matter what you use.
It’s about — when you sit down and think about that lesson — are you maximizing more face-to-face time with your students?
If the most effective thing you are doing is hands-on learning and small group work, then make sure your lessons look like that in the classroom.
If you’re a phenomenal educator and you can stand up and lecture, and kids are engaged and it’s amazing and they get it?
Then do THAT.
Like you have to make your class your space.
Don’t look at articles from Jon Bergman or Aaron Sams or anyone else.
Listen to Jon Bergmann “Preparing Your Students for Flipped Learning”
Listen to Aaron Sams “8 Ways to Be Technology’s Master and Not Its Slave

Or don’t even look at the book, and say, “Oh, I have to copy Marc.”
Do what works best in YOUR class.
Vicki: Yeah! And I use the in-flip, I’ll use videos sometimes.
Today I was talking to somebody about the difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 and Web 3.0
We had a fascinating Socratic discussion and that’s the way we did it.
So it doesn’t have to always be the same.
Use those videos in a way that really accents your learning.
So, science teachers out there, and all teachers — we’ve got some flipping awesome science ideas. Follow Marc on Twitter.
Get out there and be Johnny Crayons.
I want to be Johnny Crayons.
I don’t think I want to be behind the podium! (laughs)

Vicki: Yeah! And I use the in-flip, I’ll use videos sometimes.
Today I was talking to somebody about the difference between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 and Web 3.0
We had a fascinating Socratic discussion and that’s the way we did it.

I want to be Johnny Crayons.
I don’t think I want to be behind the podium! (laughs)
