listening to hoax rn and what struck me about the chorus is that she is implying that this faithless love is the ‘reason’ she needs in order to stay on the cliffside instead of driving off (a parallel to this is me trying imo), yet the song makes it clear that this same thing has ‘frozen her ground,’ turned her into ash, killed the hero in the movie. in taylor’s own words, the song is about three different situations, and perhaps the only thing they have in common is that they all involve people she loved and let into her life (‘you knew the password so I let you in the door’) who ended up betraying her in a way that felt comparable to the greatest pain of her life. the difference is that the other two muses (a business situation and a ‘relationship that was like family’) are now out of her life, but she clings to this love as the one thing that keeps her going even if she has to resign herself to eternal sadness (‘don’t want no other shade of blue but you / no other sadness in the world would do’ —> ‘gray skies, every day, for months, would you still stay?). idk hoax is a lot of a lot.

just like... there is so much deep, dark sadness in hoax: from the business side of the things, from her relationship, from things going on in her life in general (friendships ending and the world just being an awful place for her.) plus, we assume, her partner also dealing with his own stuff. on its own, it was kind of a dark note to end the album on because she seemed to be saying: these things are killing and hurting me, even my love has hurt me, but i'm resigned to it.

and in the lakes, she's expanding on this idea. my take is that she's explaining that the sadness is a part of her, part of her life, part of her relationship. there is depression and struggle. but she didn't seek to run away from her problems, she sought a refuge where she could find a way to live with it (a red rose grew up out of ice frozen ground ... and i bathe in cliffside pools with my calamitous love and insurmountable grief.)

the sadness is still there, but the lakes is less about resignation and more about the hope of finding a way to carry on.

all the spiderkids are great at lying when it’s an obvious outrageous silly lie, like “xyz can’t join us bc they fell into a vat of squid ink and turned into- yeah. yeah splatoon style. yeah they’ve just been having too much fun to hang.” but sometimes they (mostly Hobie) take it too far and start giving very detailed and believable recounts of witnessing someone’s death when in reality the person they’re talking about overslept or something.
