So its been almost a week since I asked one of my coworkers (almost 70) if he's ever seen Goncharov when we were talking about movies I've never seen. I even gave him a sticky note with the movie title, director, year of release, and the starring actors before I went home.
I asked him today if he's seen it yet and answers "No but I was looking at the note you gave me and it sounds familiar so I might have and not remember since I've seen so many movies. It has all these big names and sounds good!
See I even put your note right here on my folder to remind me when I got some free time!"
He sounded so excited to watch it, I don't know how to tell him.

the real difference between tumblr users and reddit users is that when push comes to shove reddit users can crash the fucking stock market and meanwhile even if you could lead a bunch of tumblr users to water we'd probably all start arguing and trying to drown each other before you could get any of us to actually take a drink

Ivanova: well, my father, Andrei-
Londo: I’ve heard that name somewhere, is it from a movie?
Ivanova: he wasn’t named after a-
Londo: GONCHAROV! that’s it! that’s where I’ve heard the name Andrey before! he was “The Banker”, no?

‘You shouldn’t talk about Goncharov because people get confused whether it’s real or not and that can be triggering etc’
It takes you five fucking seconds to search the tag and immediately find posts that explain that it’s not real and how it came about

since goncharov broke containment it’ll just be a matter of time before we get an actual goncharov film produced by Disney, directed by some MCU director, and is just absolute trash

Just finished watching Goncharov (1973) earlier and honestly how have I never heard of this movie until now???? Like, I'm not usually one for mafia fics, but this is like, so good.
Anyways we stan Katya on this blog <3. She has got to be my favorite character, right up there with Goncharov himself - Syrup

(pause game) idk i feel like complaining about people's goncharov quotes being bad/poor writing kind of. defeats the purpose of the joke? like the point is not to create an actually cohesive or good movie the point is to just say some bullshit that SOUNDS dramatic but means absolutely nothing.
it's nonsense. like "of course we're in love, that's why I tried to shoot you" "if we really were in love you wouldn't have missed" like that means nothing!!! makes no sense! compels me though etc etc
or like "none of these people have even seen a scorsese movie and they think they can write the script" no. this isnt a writing exercise, it's a joke! it's a big game! do you sit at an improv show and complain that the plot doesn't make sense and the dialogue is clunky?
i know "let people have fun" gets used to excuse a lot of bullshit but like. this feels like the appropriate time to say "let people have fun."

Migrating to Tumblr feels oddly similar to my egg cracking. All those years on Reddit, lurking silently, staying observant while keeping my head down and trying to avoid being noticed, terrified that if I’m seen or heard, I’ll get my ass handed to me. But I didn’t know anything else, so #thisisfine. I see the kids laughing gayly over there with their brightly colored furbys and Goncharov t-shirts and feel a confusing longing, but they’d never let me hang with them. I don’t belong in that world. I wouldn’t know how to tell them that I think they’re cool.
Then the boycott happens and I’m all sad and bored and find the Tumblr app buried in the back of my phone. I got it a while ago, didn’t really know why. Took it out and looked at it now and then, but was never bold enough to give it a shot. But whatever, nothing left to lose, right?
So I open it up and look for a bit. It’s pretty. It’s so pretty. I get that sense of longing again. I hesitantly run my finger over the reblog button and…I like it. I don’t know why, but it’s comforting. It wasn’t as weird as I thought it might be. Or if it is, it’s weird in a good way. I keep digging around, learning, exploring, and see that there are actually a lot of people who feel this way. They’re finding themselves, really seeing each other for the first time, being welcomed and gently guided into this strange new life by this community. People are really supportive here. I’m not used to this feeling.
The more I explore, the more comfortable I’m becoming. I think I might be able to be myself here. It feels like maybe, just maybe, I’ve found my people. Maybe I’m not anti-social media. I’d just never had a safe environment. So let’s try this. I’m scared, but I’ve got to do it. Make my own post and come out socially. I…I’m not a Redditor. I thought I was. I tried to be, but it only ever made me sad. I don’t know what’s going to happen next, but I don’t think I can ever go back to that life.
Finally admitting it, breaking out of that abusive, toxic environment…I’m feeling something I’d forgotten how to feel. Hope.

tired of everyone on here reducing icepick joe down to haha funny stabby man
like i DO like the jokes and memes, don't get me wrong, but like
there's SO MUCH to his character and he really does tie into goncharov's main themes
like. we're told early on the he was put into a mental institution as a young man due to his breakdown and inconsolable grief at losing his older brother giorno (who was his only living family and basically a father figure to him!)
wherein he was mistreated and was HEAVILY IMPLIED to be scheduled for a lobotomy before he escaped. (in fact, some interpretations say he actually received and survived the lobotomy, citing his manner of speaking and his lack of impulse control. but that's a whole separate discussion because i can honestly see both sides)
and then he turns to a life of crime because that's basically the only option he had left, after being deprived of so many opportunities in his youth (and the fear of being caught and involuntarily institutionalized again)
and him eventually leaning into the role of "violent madman" that the world thrust onto him for showing signs of mental illness in a way that was nonviolent, but was loud and inconvenient and impossible for those around him to simply push away.
and him taking his rage out at the same world that not only killed his brother but forced him to undergo years of psychiatric abuse and basically dehumanization
(like seriously, how do SO MANY people miss the connection between him using an icepick as a weapon and the concept of an ICEPICK lobotomy)
which. yknow. ties heavily into the film's theme of people being pushed to society's margins and forced into a life of crime, instead of given the help they desperately needed
and then like.
his fucking death scene. he tries to put a stop to the cycle of senseless violence, taking the fall for andrey, telling michailov that *he* was the one who killed luciana
him kneeling down and allowing michailov to bash him through the skull with his very own icepick. it's more lobotomy symbolism; dying from the very thing he spent his whole life running from. further driving home the film's themes of repeating cycles and futility
and then, to drive it all home, that sacrifice didn't even end up stopping the cycle of violence! because andrey viewed joe as basically an older brother (mirroring joe and giorno) and tried to get revenge on michailov for killing joe.
like. come on.

the reason Zepthora will never be as good as goncharov is b/c when I tried to tell my dad about Goncharov we didnt even get three sentences in before he was going "no that cant be right because *that guy* was doing *this other film* at the time" and nothing will ever top the experience of finding out my dad is such a fucking NERD
