Okay coming off anon this time.
(I'm the one who just finished reading ACOD and stumbled across your blog and sent that earlier message.)
I am currently distraught at the lack of community for this series. I'm usually a huge lurker but I may need to come out of my shell more just to talk about this series.
The world building is so good and everything I want in a fantasy. The way so many details are set up and come into play later on makes it all so enticing to reread. While I was reading the last book, I had to check something from the first book and saw a scene with Doc teasing Teraeth about his past life and was like wait I know that now! So many interactions to reread and see with new information. I think the third book is my favorite but the ending of the fifth was so smart and so good that I'd say both of those books are tied.
also didn't know she had a new book coming out soon that's exciting!
Well it's a pleasure to meet you, Cole! The small community/circle of mutuals I have who've read the books I have had to amass quite literally one person at a time over months if not a year at this point. There is a discord, though it's not currently very active (and does have an 18+ requirement given the series' contents--if you want the link I can give it!), and I've got like. A handful of mutuals who I'm mutuals with because of the series (I could give you a few if you'd like, too!)
GOD the worldbuilding. I am so so into complex worldbuilding, and acod really just goes above and beyond. It takes into account not only how the world works but the different ways people think (and are wrong about) how it works.
And it really does read like we've been given a set of rules and then have to figure out how to make them do what we want, not that the rules have been made specifically to appeal to/be flexible for the intended end result.
THE REREAD POTENTIAL!!! I remember being so (pleasantly) confused my first read, but so much suddenly makes sense when you go back. It's amazing the level of thought, detail, and consistency (though the series is of course not without errors, like Talea introducing herself to Merit twice).
There's this one throw away line in book one about Teraeth going on and on about how brilliant Atrine's construction/layout is and how cool it was that Kandor did it. And now knowing, it's like holy shit that's so funny.
I think for me books 3 and 4 are my top. Three is where everything really starts to come together, not to mention that ending! I don't think any book ending has ever had me as jaw-dropped "holy fuck dude" as that one, and I don't think any one ever will again. And book 4 does lean a little heavy into therapy-esque, but I adore Senera and seeing everyone come back and talk shit through is cathartic. Little group therapy to get their shit together to save the world.
They're all so good, the way I think about fiction and the kind of writer I want to be has unironically shifted. Like we can do that?? that's allowed? I wanna do that
And yeah! She's got a standalone, The Sky On Fire, set to come out this July!! I'm pretty sure I'm going to be incoherent when I get my hands on it :)

Welcome to the 2023 Fantasy Reading Challenge!
i created this one because fantasy used to be my top genre, but i kinda strayed the last couple of years and while i do love my contemporary romances and fucked up horror books, it's time to return to my roots :)
if you wanna join me as i rekindle my love for fantasy, here are the challenge rules: 🔮 REBLOG this post if you're participating! 🔮 join the challenge over on storygraph (optional) 🔮 for each of the prompts, read a book of your choice and cross the prompt out on the above template 🔮 post your updates in the form of text posts, bookish photos, or anything else you come up with under the tag #2023 fantasy reading challenge! 🔮 the challenge will last until the end of the year, but feel free to finish it at your own pace
[transcript and explanations of the prompts below the cut]
Tumblr media
THE 9 PROMPTS IN THIS CHALLENGE ARE:
HIGH FANTASY Set in a magical environment that has its own rules and physical laws, this subgenre’s plots and themes have a grand scale and typically center on a single, well-developed hero or a band of heroes, such as Frodo Baggins and his cohorts in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (1954).
URBAN FANTASY Urban fantasy is generally understood to be a low fantasy set in a real-world, modern, urban society (or something closely resembling one). The fantastical elements are usually not known to the general population. i.e. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
FANTASY WITH A ROMANCE SUBPLOT pretty self-explanatory :)
LONG-OVERDUE SERIES Read the first book of a fantasy series you've had on your tbr for ages!
GRIMDARK FANTASY A high fantasy with a gritty or grim setting, often focussing on characters with less-than-impeccable morals, anti-heroes, or on criminal underworlds within fantasy societies. This sub-genre provides a contrast to more traditional fantasy worlds and their moral heroes, quaint medieval villages and resplendent cities. i.e. The Lies of Locke Lamora
YA FANTASY also quite obvious, but just in case: A fantasy that is primarily aimed or marketed at a young adult (teenage) readership, usually with young adult protagonists. i.e. Six of Crows
SCIENCE FANTASY A blend of science fiction and fantasy, where advanced technology and the supernatural both come into play, or tropes from both genres are used. Often fantastical and impossible things occur under a thin guise of scientific credibility. i.e. Senlin Ascends
OLD FAVOURITE Reread an old favourite fantasy book.
CHILDREN'S FANTASY
If you want to join the challenge on storygraph too, check the notes for the link xx

What is some good vampire media i. Like just came to the realization that I don’t know much. Finishing Dracula and watching the movie soon, watched the Netflix castlevania and i wanna watch iwtv soon (both of them)! I ask because I trust ur taste :-]
AH Hi! Feeling very honored that you trust my taste aha
I hope you enjoy Interviw with The Vampire and whichever Dracula movie youre watching! There is certainly no shortage of Dracula movies out there for one, both actual attempts at adapting the book and otherwise. There is literally (at least) one for every year from 1969-1979 lol so if you dig 70s stuff that’s certainly something to explore.
Obviously there’s vampire stuff out there in a range of aesthetics and subgenres, so I’m gonna try to cover a little variety of vibes off the top of my head, and hopefully one of these things is in your preferred flavor of vampire :)
unorganized list with brief synonsis’ under the cut
As for serious vampire series the only thing that comes to mind rn are some anime/manga. Vampire Hunter D is a light novel series with two anime film adaptations. The newer one, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) is like an all-time favorite animated movie for mine. D is an angsty half-vampire vampire hunter, and it’s also set in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi/fantasy world. Really good mix of more traditional vampire lore with science fiction elements. Vampirism is implied to be the effects of a plague that swept earth as well as like a magical affliction in this.
Trinity Blood is a similar post-apocalyptic hard sci-fi/fantasy mix. Leaning more on the gothic fantasy side. It’s set in a world where we’ve gone back to the Catholic church being the dominate like governing force, so the main character Abel is (again an angsty half-vampire vampire hunter) a funny little priest man. The vampires are like really demon/angel vibes in this, but are also implied to be the result of intermingling with an alien species that humanity fought pre-apocalypse, if I remember correctly. I havn’t read or watched any of this since high school so it might suck now lol
The Hellsing manga/Hellsing Ultimate OVA. An all time fav of mine, but I also havnt reread any since high school so, again, it may suck now lol. This one is more modern than anything traditional fantasy. It’s set in the 90s and centered around Abraham Van Helsing’s (great?) granddaughter, Integra, running a vampire-hunting organization, with thee Dracula now calling himself Alucard (lol) as her weird devoted man-slave. The villains are undead nazis who have come back to take over the world after scientifically achieving vampirism in the pursuit of immortality. So it’s basically like Dracula and his cool lesbian boss fight vampire nazis … with guns. It’s good stupid fun. And Alucard is a really good example of vampire character who is both a gleeful killing machine and a miserable “I regret the loss of my humanity and the fact that I can never die” poor little meow meow type.
And in non-serious and non-anime (lol) there’s also the What We Do in The Shadows TV show which I’ve seen best described as “what if vampires were gay and stupid”, pokes good fun a lot of common vampire media tropes. And the characters are great. The 2014 movie is the same premise, but different characters.
Some other movies I might recommend are Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1974) cheesy 70s movie but has some really great exploration of lesser-discussed vampire lore; the main vampire antagonist doesn’t drink blood but drains youth with a kiss, can have their hypnotic power projected back at them with a reflected surface, and causes dead animals to come back to life when passing over them in the ground, etc. It’s also got fantasic sword fighting scenes, and really fun characters. Kronos in particular is definitely supposed to be a mysterious badass type, but he really just comes off as a socially awkward loveable weirdo. He’s super strange and he smokes weed lol. Set in like a mid-19th century fantasy germanic country.
Lost Boys (1987) or Blade (1998) for more edgy modern vampires. Both movies are stupid. Lost Boys is fun for the vamp characters which are southern Californian teenage biker gang members (gay). and Blade is fun because it’s just so bad it’s good, it’s a movie to be watched for laughs, with vampires who are just like goths that go to blood raves and sit around in suits in fancy rooms. Blade himself is also another angsty half-vampire vampire hunter (I’m realizing I’m fond of this type of character lol).
And finally if you’re looking for something more similar to the Dracula novel, I think I can only recommend Le Fanu’s Carmilla. Older and shorter than Dracula and perhaps a little less exciting, but a solid classic in vampire literature (and lesbian literature), and has a lot of its own adaptations ranging from serious to silly as well.

Fav Color: Green <3
Currently Reading: I'm rereading Percy Jackson for the billionth time. My sister bought me a cheap boxset of both Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus with the express purpose of marking up the books with comments in the margins and highlighted favorite quotes and dogeared important parts. I'm having so much fun making these books my own instead of being so so careful like I usually am with books, because usually it's a library book I'm reading haha
Last Song: I honestly don't know. I've been listening to drawfee streams as my background noise lately, not music.
Last Series: I am currently watching Legend of Korra and Good Omens
Last Movie: I just watched Camp Rock last night lol
Working On: So many things. I tend to have several projects going at once so I never end up wanting to work on something but bored of the current project. -Just finished up art fight. -A sequel to Turning to Savagery(my warriorcats fanfic) is in the works. I wanna use it for nanowrimo this next november. -I'm also working on an original story that only has a working title of The Four. Tho honestly I haven't done much with that lately. It's very much in world building stage still. -And lastly there's that rpg I run for my mom and sister. Each session takes place in a different world, and the world I'm working on now is futuristic sci-fi, as requested by my sister. So I'm building a sci-fi world for their characters to play in :)
okay I'm gonna tag random ppl from my activity again. feel free to ignore this if you don't wanna do it, and feel free to do this and say i tagged you if you do wanna do it. I'm happy to see anyone answer these tbh, it's always fun to know what ppl are up to

okokok, so I know you’re not in SnK anymore (i respect that bc i fell out of it in 2015 and came back like a couple months ago lmao) but i just want you to know I’m so glad I’ve found and read your fics. Good Enough to Eat is like my fucking ereri bible, every ereri fic i read I’m like :// “but would GEtE!Levi do this?” LMAO really when i finished reading every single one of ur snk fics i audibly groaned bc i thought that now i have to wade through the piles of really shitty ereri fics on the tag that have insane kudos (and I’ve already reread GEtE, which is my utmost favorite of ur ereri fics, twice already)
I do know teen wolf though (seen every episode) but like you’ve said to other people, i fell out of it and don’t feel the urge rn to come back but when i do (and who knows when that’ll be, a couple months or years from now? I’ll circle back eventually), I’m immediately hitting the books with ur long list of fics for that fandom!
and reading ur reaction to the plot of SnK is so funny to me bc that’s exactly how I reacted when i came back to half the people dead and other mind blowing shit like eren having a brother lmao! Frankly i wanna watch it (i only saw season 1 bc that was all there was at the time) but i think I’m gonna stop at season 3 and pretend like the plot didn’t do a 180 and start flying off the map bc I’m not crazy about the end game plot lol also mainly bc season 3 levi gives the same energy as the exact way u write levi it’s so comforting
wow this was a very long ask I’m so sorry but i just felt like i had to say something after i tried to do the walk of shame back to the general ereri tag and felt miserable, truly i love your writing so so much i feel like i could trust heart and mind with ur writing and i wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not I’m gonna like reading a fic, bc if it’s yours i know i will. I hope you’re doing well these days and that ur have a blast with Derek and stiles :)
You are so, so sweet, omg ;~; Thank you so much! Seriously, I really appreciate it, and I'm so glad you liked GEtE!!! It was so fun to write (and honestly what made me move from SnK to TW so whoops? lol Turns out I like writing about Werewolves HAHAHA!) Seriously, you're so sweet, thank you so much!! 💕💕
Awww, that means a lot to me, thank you! I know a lot of people have fallen out of TW, both because it ended and because of HOW it ended (and the dumpster fire that was the movie recently) but idk, I like the characters. I never even saw past season 4, so I just have fun with it haha. But totally understand the falling out of it. If you ever do come back, I hope you know there's tooooons of new TW stuff out there from so many amazing new creators to enjoy :)
WAIT EREN HAS A BROTHER?! Omg when tf did that happen??? Did he knows? Is he a half-brother? Was he hidden in the basement?! IS THAT WHAT IS IN THE BASEMENT?!?!?! Man, SnK... the series that keeps on giving me explosions in the brain. Wow. Well. I don't even know who all is alive or dead anymore tbh haha. They could all be dead by now and I'd never know |D Oh wellll... But thank you ;~; That's amazing to hear about S3 Levi, thank you so much!!!
You are just the sweetest bean, thank you so, so much. For real, this ask was lovely, you are lovely, and this was so kind. I appreciate you so much, thank you!! <3<3<3

Hey Terran! What were some of your favorite books you read this year 👀
Of the books I actually finished all the way through: Fifteen Hundred Miles from the Sun BY Jonny Garza Villa
^This was probably my favorite. It's a story about a long distance realtionships between two guys as they finish up highschool. It's got a good mix of conflict, it's fun, there are painful parts (there is homophobia but also a very good support system), and it's probably one of the fastest books I read through. I know the author has another book (Ander and Santi Were Here) that I definitely want to read as well when it comes out next year! I also enjoyed Parasite BY Darcy Coates. I went in knowing it was horror, and wanting to try that. It was a good dip in the genre I think.
Lastly, that I'm Glad My Mom Died book by Jennette McCurdy, she's a solid writer, and I enjoyed how she told her story. (I also reread Gideon the Ninth and enjoyed that)
OF THE STUFF I STARTED BUT HAVEN'T FINISHED: The Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli Rovelli approaches the concepts of time from both a scientific and philosophical approach, and it made the topic a lot more digestible to me that other science books I've attempted to read in the past. Sabriel by Garth Nix Okay, tbf I'm not super far into it, I've only started this recently, but it was recommeded by one of my best friends as its his favorite series but it gives me nostalgic to the books I read when I was younger, and the imagery is really good so far. I'm so eager to see where this story takes me, I already know I'm going to enjoy the rest of it.
I'm definitely excited to read more with the upcoming year, I have so many books I wanna get through. OH OH! Last thing. I did get to read the last volume of the Life is Strange graphic novel (been getting them by the volume, not the issue, so I had to wait until spring to read it) and... I've said it before but... oh, my heart. I will reread this story to the end of time, it healed my hurt from the game's... stuff. Didn't take it away tbc, but gave me new things to enjoy, new moments to love, and new characters to root for.

1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 14
How many books did you read this year?
35 novel length books and 35 picture books.
2. Did you reread anything? What?
A picture book called Rescue and Jessica by Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes and also a couple of Boxcar Children Mysteries. I usually reread the original 5 books in the PJO series every year so I might try to do that before the month is out.
3. What were your top five books of the year?
The Silence That Binds Us by Joanna Ho - It's a beautiful book about a young girl grieving her brother (tw for suicide) and her response to the racism her family faces. The writing is so good and the relationships really well thought out (well except for one of them, but it's a YA book). This is the first book in a long time to make me sob while reading it. 10/10 best book of the year.
The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi - This book is fun. So, so fun. You wanna have a good time with some Kaiju and sci-fi shenanagins, pick this up. Had I not picked up Silence That Binds Us a few months ago Kaiju would have been my number 1. I want 50 more of these. The writing is very clever.
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Translator: Michael R. Katz) - I thought Raskolnikov's downward spiral was so well represented on the page, the way his paranoia and guilt just ate and ate at him. It was so, so good. I loved his friend Razumikhin and his sister Dunya. I thought the characters were all very intriguing. It took me a long time to read this cause the text was dense, but I really enjoyed it.
The Decagon House Murders by Yukito Ayatsuji (Translator: Ho-Ling Wong) - This was a mystery done right. Very reminiscent of And Then There Were None, and compared to Lucy Foley's The Guest List which had been advertised as a modern day And Then There Were None (it wasn't, it sucked), Decagon does a phenomenally better job. I honestly didn't see the culprit being who it was, and maybe I should have, but it was enjoyable all the same.
Jenny Mei Is Sad by Tracy Subisak - This is a beautiful picture book that really captures the complexities of sadness and packages it in a way that's digestable to children. I have a really strong adoration for children's literature that takes big things and, without losing the nuances of said big things, and presents them well. This was definitely one of those.
8. Did you meet any of your reading goals? Which ones?
I actually didn't set any reading goals for this year, because I wasn't sure how much reading I'd be able to get done, but I'm really happy with the reading I did do because I read some really great books this year.
9. Did you get into any new genres?
Sci-fi! Just two entries - Kaiju and The Lost World but I loved both of them! Technically it's a continuation of me getting into sci-fi from last year when I read Jurassic Park and 11/22/63 so I'm thinking I might keep trying things out in the genre. Most of these titles have, a some point or another, a group of strangers working together and learning to care for each other in the process and also aren't in completely different universes. They're still on earth or they still can come back to earth. Also, none of them are set super far into the future. So I guess I might enjoy something like The Martian by Andy Weir as opposed to a true sci-fi novel set in another world.
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
PJO #1-5, Anne of Green Gables, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Little Women

Fanfic Writer asks
Tagged by @daegulinekush thank you so much, love!! 💜
1) Who is your favorite character to write for and is this the character you find easiest to write for?
I can’t possibly pick, I have so many characters I love writing for. The aaol couple, all of my tct characters, the SA lovelies. Like I even enjoy writing certain side characters like for example The Old Choi from OY. I couldn’t possibly pick because I pour so much in love into all of my characters no matter how big or small
except for CBT OC, she’s a bitch and I wanna fight her
2) What is your favorite fic of yours?
I love all of my stories very dearly ahhfhd but my Top Five (in no particular order) would be:
Queendom Series
Sanguis Alpha
The Cocktail Trilogy
An Abundance of Luck & A Sprinkle of Fate
Only Yesterday
3) What fic of yours do you think is underrated?
My husband!Yoongi series. You guys, read it. He’s so cute!!
4) What fic of yours were you surprised by how popular it was?
Cold Gun
You bitches said it’s horny time and I respect & support that
5) Do you like one shots or multi-chapters?
I like both. It all depends on my mood and what I want to create that day.
Oneshots feel like a quick daytrip. They are great if I have a random idea begging to be created or if I need a distraction from working on my longer stories. And they don’t really occupy my mind once I finished them, so they are always a refreshing way to pass the time.
Multi-chaptered stories feel more like a long journey without a set arrival time. They take up my thoughts for a period of time and stay with me throughout that time. Like for example, I will always see Late Summer of 2020 as my “Purple Rain Summer” as I actively worked on PR during that time and Fall 2021 will always be my “Sanguis Alpha Autumn” because that is what I worked on during that time.
6) Do you outline your fics? If so, how?
Not really? Most of my outlining happens in my brain throughout the day hahaha I have like a mental catalogue of all my story outlines on demand whenever I want to. I can actually visualise myself picking out a certain book and opening it and then flipping through its pages. Like no joke, I actually have a mental library of my WIPs I can always go to afadf
7) How do you edit your fics? What do you look for in your edits?
I reread the story at least two times after finishing it, then let it sit for a day or two and then reread it one last time. I look for grammatical errors, punctuation errors, plotholes, wonky sentences/dialogue and sometimes I also end up adding more details to scenes to make them even more engaging.
For my multi chaptered stories, I like to reread every chapter once after my entire editing process and then once right before posting just in case I missed some mistakes.
8) Do you take inspiration from real life? If so how do you incorporate it into your fics?
Yes I do. I use my stories as therapy at some parts. It can be either through one character struggling and finding guidance in another character’s words. Or sometimes it’s just someone getting their face punched in while I imagined the face of someone who wronged me whilst writing the scene ahhaha I said what I said. Also obviously places, food, music, art, just living life inspires me as well and I like to incooporate it in my stories in some way or another.
9) Do you visualize scenes in your head before you write them? (Can you picture the setting, character body language etc)
I picture the setting & body language yes. I also smell scents. I mean not like actually smell them, but my mind connects certain scents with certain settings. My scenes are definitely very sensory imput heavy. Also, I can see my settings perfectly, I just suck at describing them. Like I know how the house of the OGC couple looks like & I can see myself walking through the SA estate into the smallest to details. I just can’t describe them to you guys hahaha
10) How do you feel about writing plot, setting/description, inner thoughts, dialogue?
how do I feel about it? I mean, I love it. Isn’t that the whole point of writing? That you create your own little worlds with their own plots & settings & history? I also love writing inner thoughts & dialogue. Also again, the only thing I always struggle with is describing environments. Like the pretty views are all in my mind, but I can’t get them on paper. No joke, if someone plugged a machine into my brain, which can conjure perfect replicas of how I imagine my worlds so I can show them to you guys, that would be great ahhaha
11) What perspective do you write from most and/or least and why? (1st, 3rd limited, 3rd omniscient, deep pov, etc)
Anything but 1st person, that makes me cringe so hard hahahah. I also had to google what “deep pov” means and I don’t think that I wrote that before either, but it sounds very interesting actually.
Also this is such a random sidenote but smut in German makes me want to drink bleach. I would rather give up writing forever then ever write smut in German hahahah
12) Do you like to switch pov's a lot or stick to one character?
I really enjoy switching POVs. It’s so much fun to tell the story from different characters’ eyes and how they might percieve certain events differently than other characters.
13) Are you a fast or slow writer?
I am neither fast nor slow, I am perfectly paced for my own self. Writing (as a fun lil hobby) should never be a race against time.
14) What is something you wrote in a fic that you are hoping readers picked up on but you don't know if they did? And/or, what is something that you were excited that readers did pick up on?
I had a few people tell me that they noticed the masked man in Ch.15 of SA say “little one” & that they remember Namjoon calling her like that in the library as well. So that was really cool because omfg yES you noticed!!
I also really like it when people come to me after rereading a story and they go all like “omfg I noticed so many hints with the second read through, it should have been so obvious. It’s crazy how obvious some things are if you have more context”. Because that’s what I personally really love about revisiting stories, so it’s always nice to have people tell me that.
15) If you could only write one type of fic (angst, fluff, etc.) for the rest of your life what would it be?
Slice of Life happy moments & Smut between two people deeply in love oh those two just hit different
16) Do you have a method for getting characters to sound/feel in character?
Yes I have. I use certain vocabulary for certain characters and also structure my sentences differently. Let’s take Sanguis Alpha for example. If I wrote a scene out of Tae’s POV the sentences would be well structured and adorned with fancy, old-fashioned words. While during passages from Kook’s POV the sentences are short and sometimes many thoughts are jumble into one, because of how reactive he still is to every sensory imput and how every new imput can cause him to have a new thought.
17) Do you have any wips that you can tell us about? What are you most excited for in you wip?
YOU GUYS MAGNUS VENATIO IS RUINING ME OMFGF THE ANGST CONTINUES AND I CAN’T HANDLE IT ANYMORE I just had to make Tae cry and now I am broken because poor baby doesn’t deserve to cry :(
18) What's the most obscure thing you've researched for a fic?
Probably how quickly bullet wounds heal & how it feels to get shot in certain areas of the body (it’s for Family Matters because shit’s about to go down in that fic). Actually. Maybe also where to stab a person to kill them quickly fadsfha (it was for A Tiger’s Judgement). And like how certain poisonous mushrooms kill you (it’s for Fallen for You). lisTEN I could very succesfully kill people now HAHAHA for legal reasons, this is a joke lmoaoao
19) What is some random info you happen to have that you used in a fic?
All of my photography knowledge in Shutter Sounds, that came in really handy.
20) What is your favorite thing about writing fanfic? What about writing in general?
Just that I can escape into my own little worlds and forget about the real world. And I guess about fanfic, it’s great because it’s with people you already know well so you miss out on that really tiring process of “getting to know the characters” because you already know how they might act & look and that can be really comforting to many people, including me.
Also, it’s also really fucking rewarding to look at a finished project and go “holy moly, those words in that specific order under that specifid plotline didn’t exist in this world before I created them and without me this story would have never even existed. I did that! I made a new thing from scratch!”
Thank you so much for this tag. I had a blast answering those questions!! I’m tagging anyone who wants to do this. I’m serious, tag me in yours if you decided to do it!! 💜

First Chapter Test: Romance Edition
so i finished that regency romance/crime thriller and wanted more of that vibe and yes i have 12 other books checked out but the other night i got drunk and put a bunch more on hold. this'll include the romances i mentioned in my last first chapter test, but i figure it'll be helpful to have them all in the same place.
Palace Project
In the Case of Heartbreak by Courtney Kae: I've had In the Event of Love on my TBR for a bit, but it's a holiday read and i def wanna read that in the appropriate season, so i was pleased to find the sequel is set in summer! how timely. apparently it's a friends to lovers/best friend's sibling sitch with a sorta baking contest involved. the writing style is promising, it's weakest point being the sequel-catch-up spiel: the rapid intro of a bunch of characters real fast made my head spin. but i think it'll be okay from here on.
Hockey Bois by AL Heard: Was a little put off when this one had a fanfiction-style tags/tropes list up front, but the writing style is perfectly good. The main character is just starting to play hockey on a team/in a league as an adult, and the stoic team star takes an interest in helping him practice. I'm hoping the "grump" role will slip from the love interest soon, but it's a really decent start, and i will probably continue.
The Mastermind by Amy Lane: Amy Lane is truly hit or severe miss for me and i've not enjoyed a book of hers in a while. i've been interested in this heist/con artist series for a while, but never enough. i know i've read this first chapter before, and rereading it, remembered why i put it down: the main plotline focuses directly on a (white) woman "ruining" a man's "legacy" through falsifying claims of discrimination. While i know the author to treat her women characters very well, the concept still makes me uncomfortable. I think i'll press on for now, but i can easily put it down if there's nothing intriguing enough to make up for the unbelievable female antagonist set-up. Also: a LOT of telling in this first chapter, when I would've liked the characters' past to unravel over a bit more time.
String Theory by Ashlyn Kane: Wanted to read a hockey romance, but Palace doesn't have the first of this author's series, and i don't wanna skip around in that one, so I compromised with this unrelated book. that being said, this was surprisingly the weakest link on this platform so far (i had very low expectations for Hockey Bois). The opening was a little confusing – i think i read the prologue? also haven't met the second character, and all i learned in this one is that one of the main characters is a slut with a very stoic roommate lmao. I'll hold out until i meet both characters, but i'm 50/50 on this one.
Physical
A Marvelous Light by Freya Marske: Oh I had high hopes for this one based on all the good things i've heard and my recent regency mood but the first chapter did not serve it well. It's regency(?) era with magic, and i think i remember there's a sorta mystery (thriller?) aspect to it, but the very short first chapter has a lot of samey characters with little worldbuilding and a lot of action, which while a strong way to start, is not the vibe i was looking for at the moment. i don't think i'll fully dnf now that it's in my possession, but it will probably sit in my pile of shame for a while before it get to it.
The Prospects by KT Hoffman: ok first of all, didn't realize the main character is also TRANS and now i'm HYPE about it. the first chapter was great 10/10 no notes i fuckin love sports romances i'm so glad this is finally out and owned by my library system and in my HANDS
The Ride of Her Life by Jennifer Dugan: The true panic cover "buy" (check-out). I have no clue what it's about but it was available and had two ladies on the cover. And looked a lil country, but I think it's about horses? The most stereotypical first chapter in the world, didn't reveal all that much, but the writing style is very readable. I truly have no verdict on this, i'll have to get a little further.
Hoopla
Delay of Game by Ari Baran: Knowing the main characters of this book from the previous one in the series, this story def started as a bucky/cap hockey au and i KNOW it's gonna be stunning. that being said, the first few bits are a huge flashback and reframe the characters a lot, which kinda knocked me for a loop. I'm also afraid to read this before my library has the next one; i need my book safety net. T_T I'm also a little concerned my expectations are a bit too high for this one lol
Libby
New Adult by Timothy Janovsky: The sliding doors/alternate timelines concept is very different from what I've read from this author, so I'm a little concerned in that regard. I also don't personally like stand-up comedy all that much, and I hope there's not too much of that on-page. I also found the set-up a little rough. I'll probably go ahead and read this to get it off my tbr, and it'll probably be a good time. im not sure it's strong enough to bump the slump though.
Afterlove by Tanya Byrne: Genuinely don't know what to expect from this one. I've only heard of it bc i think Fairyloot? sent it as a bonus book in a box and some booktubers unboxed it. I've not seen anyone read it or heard anything of it since. There's something about death and undeath and teen girls in love. I don't have super high hopes bc it's YA but the opening was strong and i'm interested to see where the plot goes, though i'm not invested in the romance much at all at this point.

i am thinking about the fifth season too now. man i would love to experience THAT book all over again... i think i read it last year and it immediately became top 3 alongside gideon the ninth and a place for us (by fatima farheen mirza) just because. the sheer. everything of it all. those three books changed the ENTIRE game for me in what is possible in stories, in the ways they're told and what they're told about. it's--also SO off track here and i do not mean to add more books to your tbr 😭😭 common experience any time i read a book i will pull out ten more books and be like WOW JUST LIKE ALL OF THESE but--it's about earthquakes, and fear, and a world where everything ended and nothing exists anymore but the people and earthquakes and fear, and cycles and love and probably imperialism etc etc. i could probably talk about it forever but mostly i just want to read it again i am slapping it onto the train in my brain with a sticky note. it's such a powerful story, and everyone and everything is so flawed and that is what makes them so beautiful, i genuinely don't know how else to describe it. anyway yes. stories that play with timelines are SO MUCH FUN when you do it right and i have not gotten far in this one but they definitely seem to be going in a very good direction, and also stories that are confusing are even more fun if you let yourself get swept up in all of it so i shall be doing that! who needs to understand things when the evocation of feelings exists 👍 will definitely report back as i go!
No no you don't need to apologize, I specifically started a section of my books spreadsheet so that my TBR could grow wildly out of control, you're more than welcome to continue adding to it. Because those kinds of books are exactly the kind I'm looking for--of course I still have fun reading other series, but every so often you want one that just hits. That challenges how you understand and tell stories. And a chorus of dragons and black sails both did that for me. It was like wait a fucking minute we can do that?? And then when they challenge how you understand and see the world...Babel has changed how I interpret and understand the impact of other books on me it's like I gained a new color. And then there's also the kind where you kinda just exist alongside the story, and it's nothing huge and dramatic but it's profound and it holds its hand out to you in a peaceful offer to wander through it...Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto was such an experience. I make no promises, but the fifth season is on my radar now :)
if I think about the stories that stand out too hard I will explode (In a good way). But anyway! Back to timelines and acod! I think the series goes in a wonderful direction, though the timeline switching I think is best in book 1. It doesn't really do that later in favor of switching between povs of different characters instead, which the variety and intrigue of the characters makes up for it, I think.
And yeah!! It's one of those stories where you just wanna let yourself be swept up in it!! if you try and dissect it too hard immediately you'll just give yourself a headache because there's so much and also. You don't have all the information you need to do that. I found that just going with it you figure out like 95% of things--sometimes I had to back up and be like okay wait let me read that again. But the author does a pretty good job most of the time of subtly but clearly explaining things to you if they're likely to slip under your notice. Summarizing things and laying things out when needed, reminding you of things you might've forgotten. And with time you understand things that would've turned you in SO many loops in the beginning. Though I must confess it wasn't until I finished the series i realized usigi was a style of underwear. So you might not pick up on everything
anyway! I am So tempted to reread them just to experience it alongside you again but also. I know I have so many other books to read. but also...a chorus of dragons...they make me FERAL god it's like my brain shuts down AND goes into overdrive

Book Instagram Ask, because I know I'm the only follower who knows how BADLY you wanna beg for people to send you these PATHETIC little ask games. Grovel at my feet, peasant...
Tumblr media
...anyway: 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, 16, 20, 23, 24, 28, 30
Thank you for indulging me TTwTT
1. The last book you read
This is how you lose the time war - Max Gladstone and Amal El-Mohtar and it was lovely in every way in a way I didn't expect at all
4. A book you want to be a movie
Matched - Ally Condie "want" is a strong word, but I do remember thinking that it Would make for a pretty good movie as I was reading it way back when, which is a first for me
5. A book with a trope that you love
The Demon King - Cinda Williams Chima I'll keep it real with you, I haven't read this one since the series finished in 2012 so I don't actually remember loads of it. But I remember loving it when I did read it, and it does have the Princess - Street Kid pairing which is such a fun trope when you do it right
6. A book that you have reread, or wanted to
The Chronicles of Narnia - CS Lewis I don't reread books in the way my younger self used to do, but these were on a steady cycle as I grew up
9. Your favourite book of all time
The older I get the harder it is to pick favourite anythings, let's be real. But reading The Star-Touched Queen - Roshani Chokshi got me out of a reading slump as easy as flipping a switch and altered my brain chemistry for weeks, so it is certainly up there. Who doesn't love an epic romance with Death with the most gorgeous language ever?
12. A fantasy book you love
The Dark Days Club - Alison Goodman is just so juicy with the regency setting and demon slaying in high society and I read the whole series in a manic week lol
16. A book that you want to read soon
I found a gorgeously old edition of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame - Victor Hugo at a second hand store years ago but have yet to read it, but that still doesn't mean it'll be the next one I pick up once I finish my current book, just that it is in the ever-growing piles meant to be read ^^;
20. A book that you think about often
Soulless - Gail Carriger ( @gailcarriger on here, hi!) managed to nestle it's way into my dark little soul from the get-go with all the improper sassing a spinster in steampunk Victorian London can get away with before the werewolf lord just Has to marry her. And don't forget about all the hats! 10/10 God I Wish That Were Me.jpg
23. A book that you are afraid to read
Afraid how? I have had Emma - Jane Austen staring at me from the shelf for years and I have been slow at actually picking it off of it to read because what if it disappoints me? Does that count?
24. A book with a perfect TV-adaptation
Those exist? I can only remember True Blood and Game of Thrones out of books I've read (no, I still haven't watched or read Good Omens, sue me), and those are both .. not very true to their origins, you know... Can I say mangas? I'm gonna say mangas!
Old-Fashioned Cupcake - Sagan Sagan had a spot-on adaptation. I would know because I started reading it within a day after I finished the show, and they are both lovely
28. The book that you wish you wrote
The Night Circus - Erin Morgenstern is the perfect embodiment of how I would have wanted my writing to read, and the kind of story I would have liked to tell, and I will be forever grateful that Someone got to write it so I could read it <3
30. A book you always recommend
The Deed of Paksenarrion - Elizabeth Moon I don't know about "always", but I do find myself recommending it quite often so why not give it another mention here? This is one of the ones that I probably should reread soon though.
This took so much time and thinking lmao!
But I had a lot of fun thinking back on books I've loved, so thank you again for indulging me <3

more defiant spoilers
i lied, i was not enough of an adult to make myself get six hours of sleep and i had to read the whole book in less than twelve hours, apparently
i am proud of myself for not crying, though - came real close when they were doing the final skyward role call, and i thought i might when gran-gran had her noble last stand, but i saw that one coming so i was able to prepare myself
love that we got more looks into brade's head, and how she really was just.... spensa without a support system (which did not make any of their interactions any less homoerotic) - i'm a little sad at how anticlimactic her end was, but, well, sometimes a fight really is just hitting the other guy with their shields down and that's it
it's nice to see the emotional throughline of the series, now that it can be taken as a whole - grief sucks, but it's easier with people who understand and support you, and also oppressed peoples should unionize and rebel and seize the means of production (especially when they are the means of production)
i actually really love how the taynix and the delvers come to their own agreement completely separate from the races of people we know and understand, because yeah, they are both intelligent species, they don't need a referee or benefactor standing over them to be part of their decision
there's some details about what chet and m-bot were up to that i think i misread, so i'll have to contemplate those and pay attention on a reread at some point, but for now i have finished it, and i am pleased with the ending
(also thank you sanderson for confirming kimmalyn has a girlfriend, always good to have it in the source material rather than just confirming it off the page)
now i guess i get to look out for skyward legacy at some point? i also want to get a physical copy of the three skyward flight novellas - i have electronic copies but i wanna have physical ones too
overall, a good book - it seemed to be in a holding pattern sometimes, with people going 'oh what could the solution to this be???' when, like, it felt like they'd said the solution three times already, but maybe i was filling in the gaps with my own inferences, and there were many moments that felt surprising and well-earned, so all good in the end

hellooo im back💥 i adore your tattoo ideas i love queen sm & getting lines from youre my best friend with your best friend? genius truly. if i could get my best friend to get a matching tattoo with me (which would never happen shes so indecisive) id love to get lyrics from a song we both love. also love the little freak lines i love that song sm.
TY for the fic rec again im gonna give u another one because thats how this works now<3 across the hallway by periwinklehelp_123 (dorlene, dorcas and marlene live across the hallway from each other, pretty self explanatory)
now for taylor. im in a reputation kinda mood today sooo....getaway car, gorgeous, call it what you want !
and omg. pisces thats so funny. please tell me u dont have the same bday as remus.
also i love friends & b99 theyre just such perfect feel-good shows. ive recently been watching new girl in my spare time too🫶
also tangled & princess and the frog?? taste. i love those movies sm theyre the superior disney princess movies (although i always was an ariel girl when i was really young LOL)
okay now questions:
have i ever seen a moose - god i wish. i dont even think moose live in my part of canada? (just googled it and they dont. very sad day for me)
temperature over here - rn its 6 degrees, in the summer it gets up to like 30 degrees, & winter usually gets down to around -10 at most.
favourite fic of all time - oooh this is a hard one. now i dont really read fics for any other fandom, its kinda for marauders for me so. my wip favourites are disintegration by moonymoment, crimson rivers by zar, edge by pinkpalaceapartments (another agent-james assassin-reg fic, based on killing eve), kill your darlings by messermoon, and ofc dead or alive (i guess i have a thing for assassin reg and agent james LOL) now for finished fics... the winner is gonna have to go to just lovers (like we were supposed to be) by zar. (and intermission by zar too since it fits in there) its just perfect and i feel like ive reread it a billion times.
fav golden trio era ship - probably luna and neville (do they have a ship name? i cant think of it if they do) they were my favourite characters as a kid so they have a special place in my heart. OH i also love romione because theyre just a classic and i love them sm.
do i write fics - sadly no. ive tried and failed. im not a creative writer at all, in fact im literally the opposite, call me the grammar police. im essentially the designated paper editor among my friends because im fantastic at technical writing and stuff like that, but i cant write for shit. i truly envy people who can create such beautiful stories.
tea or coffee - coffee always. i do love tea and have it probably just as much as coffee but i will always be a coffee girly.
go to outfit - hmm. well i basically live in my doc martens and leather jacket (very sirius of me i must say) and i do love a good baggy jean and band tee look. but on my off days you cannot find me out of my sweatpants or pajamas. its simply not happening.
how many piercings - 4, two on each earlobe. (2 i did myself with a sewing needle, dont recommend) i really wanna get my septum or just the nostril, but i havent decided yet. although id probably never get it, i do love the look of the medusa piercing too its just cool.
area of study - im studying classics and anthroplogy in uni rn! ive always been a history/humanities girly and i love ancient history and languages so much so thats what i decided to do. (plus i was a greek mythology kid so) i think my ideal career path would be archaeologist but that could change at any given moment, so im just seeing where uni takes me.
fun fact about me - hmmm. im left handed! kinda not a fun fact but for some reason i dont know very many left handed people (i swear have we gotten rarer or something??)
now for questions for you:
do you like books? whats your fav book/book series?
fav movie/movies?
whats one place youve always wanted to visit and why?
do you have any go-to pieces of jewelry that you always wear?
fav food?
cats or dogs?
mbti type?
sun, moon, or stars?
fav holiday? (as im writing this im losing it thinking about what you said about lily and james dying on my bday.😭 i just know james answered the door dressed to the nines in some dumb costume)
im so bad at coming up with questions and im running out ideas so ill think of more for next time <3
-bee
bee bee hello my new best friend <333
i know it is genius isn’t it ??? that’s what i keep telling my best friend , but he’s too scared of the needle. my goal is one year. one year and we’ll both get tattoos. and the little freak thing is literally one of my favourite harry songs !!
new girl is honestly like after modern family on my list. i shall get to her one day.
YOU ARE WELCOME FOR THE FIC REC :))))) I’ve now downloaded across the hallway & am very excited to read it , so thank you (i love lesbians & the next door neighbour trope !!)
now fic rec for you (that is what we do now , you are absolutely correct.) - down at the wolfbucks café by WolfstarGarden (ft barista james & remus , where regulus & sirius walk in one day for a cup of coffee.)
and because i’m on a little bit of a drarry kick rn - mental by sara_holmes (ft drarry with a miscast legilimens spell meaning they can hear each other’s thoughts.)
TAY TAY TIME -
(also yes , reputation always! as jake would say , ‘she makes me feel things’)
getaway car - JEGULUS - i’ve claimed this song for doa (it’s very inspired by getaway car) so i’m very excited for it (favourite song on rep , dare i say.) ‘sirens in the beat of your heart , should’ve known i’d be the first to leave , think about the place where you first met me’ - very very relevant for doa. changed my life when i heard this line. and generally ‘sirens in the beat of your heart’ like nee naw nee naw , don’t fall in love with this man , it’s bad for your heart , but aw crap i’m in love with him already !!!
gorgeous - JEGULUS - (keep relating everything to them , but i swear there are other ships i relate with other songs ) ‘you ruined my life by not being mine’ regulus watching james dance at a club & fuming because someone’s dancing against him (he doesn’t know that james is doing it on purpose to make him jealous) ‘you make me so happy it turns back to sad’ I LOVE IT it’s them them. ‘you’re so gorgeous , i can’t say anything to your face’ i can just imagine reg being all mean to him (it’s his way of flirting , poor chap.)
call it what you want - JEGULUS - (again I feel the need to apologise. i relate everything to them , they’re my current hyperfixation.) ‘brought a knife to a gunfight’ ‘They fade to nothing when I look at him ,And I know I make the same mistakes every time , Bridges burn, I never learn, at least I did one thing right, I did one thing right’ - IT’S SO THEM IN MY HEAD !!! like imagine a celeb au , and this is reg afterwards where he’s being all smooth with it , because he’s finally home with james AHHHHHH.
chatting time -
i just assumed everywhere in canada had mooses. just like i see foxes everywhere here . that’s a little disappointing , tbh , they should have mooses everywhere.
6 degrees??? damn that’s almost warm compared to the weather here (1 degree) . & it gets into he negatives ( I don’t remembered a minus ten , but i could be wrong.) however , i still think london cold is colder than any other cold. it just hits different. like absolutely ten times worse.
and the fics , dstg , cr , kyd , are all on my list ( i paused cr at chap two so I am absolutely avoiding spoilers with a BAT) and edge (KILLING EVE ??? OH MY GOD IT’S GOING ON THE LIST.) . thank u so so much for putting dead or alive on this list !!! I’m so happy you liked reading it just as much as i love writing it !!
just lovers & intermission are also on my list. my lessons are currently fucking me up so i have zero free time , & i’ve got mocks coming up in a little while. but once i’m free , i will absolutely read this it sounds so cute and comforting!!
ahhh luna & neville ?? that’s so sweet ?? (vis a vis ship name - luville is what i’d go for :) ) & i love romione too (unfortunately will not be reading any fics with them as the main ship , they’re just not compelling enough for me ) i personally love drarry (& dramione sometimes , lil bit of a guilty pleasure u might say) and their fics stab me in my heart and put them back together (isolation , temptation on the warfront (fave drarry fic ever) , it was all just a game , wait and hope)
AND SAME . I’m literally the grammar editor for my bets friend . // ‘edit my paper’ ‘use grammarly’ ‘you went to a grammar school. you ARE my grammarly.’ // literally even my school friends , the ones who went to this grammar school with me , use me as their editors . I’m being used , honestly. (i make them buy me things in exchange though.)
YOU CHOSE COFFEE ?? as a british person , this is blasphemy. absolute blasphemy. *sips tea with pinky finger sticking out*
leather jacket & doc martens ?? so sirius black of u , yes. ( me looking at my red converse , jeans & plain ol’ shirt.) BAND TEES BAND TEES BAND TEES. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH THEY ARE BAE. I unfortunately own like one of them , but my best friend owns so so many and one day , when he’s not home , i’ll break in and take a couple. maybe. not getting out of sweats & pjs is so real of you & same honestly. nothing beats netflix & pjs with a glass of something sparkly & a tube of smarties for me.
BRO not the sewing needle , how did you not get an infection ?????? one of my friends has a septum piercing (her parents do not know this !) so she hides up her nose when she’s at home. she got a cold recently, and she describes sneezing with the septum piercing ‘the most painful thing i’ve ever fucking felt.’ so u know. advice. i myself advise you to get the nostril pierced. i think it would be very cool of you (but of course i am in favour of whatever you wish to do)
AHHHHHHH I WAS ALSO A GREEK MYTHOLOGY KID!!!!! i knew the story of troy by heart , and i still do. i still do. love meeting another greek nerd honestly we’re so cool !!! AND YOU STUDY CLASSICS ??? that’s so cool of u honestly. there’s a joke in latin (here at least ) where we say ‘caecilius est in horto’ does that carry over there in canada ?? or am i just speaking tosh right now?? & anthropology too ?? u just keep getting more and more awesome. (i wanted to be an archaeologist too , at one point. decided saving lives was more my thing.somtimes tho , when i watch spy movies & i come out of the cinema , i do say i will become an agent.but i never will.) & yes let life carry u on ur way .
left-handed people are depleting. i know one left handed person in real life & she says it’s a real struggle. (my goal in life is to become ambidextrous though.)
